OPINION: We Shouldn’t Arrest One More Person for Having Marijuana

I had a homie who was arrested for having an ounce of weed that was just for his personal use. He had full custody of his four children and still did eight long months. My friend hasn’t been the same since, to be quite honest, and I just can’t get over the fact that before he went into the system, he was funny, sensitive, and charismatic, and now, he’s just different.

And, he’s not alone. He’s just another casualty of the War on Drugs, which is taking directly from the frontline. I know so many people who have been victimized by insanely unbalanced and truly outdated drug laws that do more damage to the fabric of modern society than to the actual so-called criminal offense the laws are disciplining.

When you look at marijuana arrest data in the U.S., you’ll be floored to know that every 37 seconds, someone gets handcuffed and booked for weed-related crime, and black people are 3.73 times more likely to be the ones arrested (communities of color have felt this to be true for a long time, and now we have the stats to back us up).

That doesn’t reflect the true voice of the people. In fact, 9 out of 10 adults in the U.S. don’t think a person should face jail time for a small amount weed. In 2010 alone, states spent $3.61 billion enforcing marijuana laws, yet many cities also experienced mass school closings that threaten to hinder the progress of our youth.

Something isn’t making sense here, folks — and when I say something, I basically mean everything. It’s time to be done with this B.S., in every state.

I think I understand why black arrest data is so high in comparison to the amount of white people who are also arrested for using the same illegal vegetable. Welp, it’s racial profiling to say the least, and here in my hometown of Philly, the police make a habit of jumping out on street corners and frisking people — too often without reasonable suspicion of a crime.

The police only do this in West, South, and North Philly (the predominantly black neighborhoods) and Northeast Philly (poor white people). I never see or hear about any jump outs in Rittenhouse Square or near the Philadelphia Stock Exchange or University of Pennsylvania’s campus (and that’s where all the good stuff is — LOL). I’m joking, but seriously, what makes one group of people OK to target and demoralize versus another batch of humans who are consuming the same amount of the same substance? That’s the question.

Now, those of us with half a brain know exactly what I’m getting at, and it’s all about who is easier to hassle and disrupt. There is no “let’s start stopping and frisking stockbrokers and Ivy League college students for something so small.” On the contrary, it’s more like, “so let’s go mess with these kids of color because it’s easy; they’re doing nothing with their lives anyway, so let’s just ruin the small amount of humanity they may have left for kicks.”

I think some police actually think they’re making the streets safer, but when a person is incarcerated, they usually re-enter society more corrupted than when they went in. So now we have a person who was just smoking or selling a little weed, who gets locked up and is now back on the streets more emotionally displaced than when he or she went in. Are the streets safer now?? I have to ask myself why so much money is being spent on the false hopes of criminal rehabilitation by incarceration (I didn’t mean for this to rhyme, but it comes naturally).

I can think of so many different ways the money can be better spent, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Start off with the most obvious areas in need of improvement — quality education, more music and sports programs for children and older youth. The money being spent on marijuana arrests and convictions is a complete waste of taxpayers’ money. I mean, with the dough that’s being wasted on arresting people up for smoking and selling minuscule amounts of weed, we could feed starving children, set up Internet-equipped rooms in inner-city community centers for starters… and not just for inner-city youth, but for all children.

The truth is, people really need to know what’s going on and take some responsibility for the society that we live in. Share knowledge and ideas with each other; we can get to the bottom of things like this a lot quicker that way. I want as many people as possible to educate themselves at The Uncovery, where they can find more facts and real numbers, as well as why info about why reforming marijuana laws is so important.

Check out The Uncovery for info about how the War on Marijuana is being fought in your own backyard.

EXCLUSIVE Video: D.U.B.B. Talks ‘Don’t Take Days Off’

VideographerFrsk Purple

An Athens Park ambassador, Quincey “D.U.B.B.” White is South Central, Los Angeles. The lights, camera, and action of South Central mock those of Hollywood’s. Within this realm, melanin jeopardizes freedom and perceived cultural stereotypes propel confinement.  Though dire shadows cling to everyday situations, hope’s unyielding presence constantly challenges internal strength; it transforms lives. Hope demanded that D.U.B.B. embrace and nourish his art.

Aware actions reflect both his determination and his talent. He conveys a specialized lyricism which exemplifies life; his perspective amplifies reality while encouraging growth. Never Content, an apt-description of D.U.B.B.’s mindset, is also his latest effort. Sincerity shapes his words, “I feel like if I’m rich tomorrow I’ll still be talking about the things, you know, that are going on in the ‘hood and the ghetto. That’s where I came from; I can’t really stray from that.”

“Don’t Take Days Off” with Nipsey Hussle

“So, I really just sat to the beat—and at this time I really wasn’t actually writing anything down. I was just punching in. No, for real; I had a studio and I had my mic in my room. I was sitting down just like this. I had the mic just like this. I was punching in like every four lines. I had the record—I sent it off, the rough-mix—Nip, sent the verse back the next day. Then he asked could he have it for Crenshaw and I said, ‘Of course.’ You know what I mean. Then he said we could use it for both projects. We just went with it like that. It was a blessing.”

Sustaining Relevancy

“When I first told myself—even before getting this far—to keep that hunger, you know what I mean.  That’s what keeps you relevant. So, basically, it’s something within yourself. You got to keep telling yourself, ‘Even if I get to Jay Z’s status, in a week I still got to work like I haven’t made it yet. To sustain that momentum and keep that notoriety; I just tell myself I gotta keep working…!”

50 Cent Discusses His Relationship With Eminem

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent expressed recently that his break with Interscope Records may have involved the battle between Dr. Dre’s Beats headphones and his own SMS Audio headphones, but the Queens mogul also says has does not have any personal problems with the superproducer or his other mentor Eminem.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, 50 contends that his relationship with Em is solid.

50 Cent says:

It’s impossible to ruin the relationship Eminem and I have built up. There’s no way I would say or do anything that would disrespect what he’s done for me. I credit a hug portion of my success to Em because if it wasn’t for him being excited about the project, no one else would have rallied around it. It’s one of those things that if I hated Dr. Dre, I couldn’t say it to anyone because it would bother Em. You understand? He’s my Dre, and Dre is that to him, and so I would just never express it. I have nothing against Dre. I mean, on my record I have a song coming out that’s produced by him…

I’ve got to say this, in Em’s case, when everything’s going wrong, I feel like he’s not even involved in it; he’s never a part of it. Every time something positive is happening, I always relate it to Em. He only has positive energy surrounding his aura with me. When there’s something wrong, he’s not even aware of it. I have to call and talk to him for him to understand it. We’ll have conversations when I go out to Detroit to record, and I’ll be telling him about it and he’ll be like, “Get the f### out of here.” He’s hearing it for the first time.

AHH Concert Review: Da Triple 6ix ‘Sinners Tour 2014: With Da Mafia 6ix and Friends’

Videographer: Emazing Smith

“In Cali, that’s medication,” asserted a green connoisseur! “Well, in New York that’s contraband; no drugs in the club!” shouted the Webster Hall employee. A wrath of wrinkles on his face contorted to display disdain.  Preliminary tense moments were assuaged with the return of the healing medication. Following thorough body searches by aspiring police candidates, the congregated supporters were granted entrance to New York City’s, Webster’s Hall-Marlin Room.

Be prepared! As the tour states, Da Triple 6ix Sinners tour boasts world famous, Da Mafia 6ix amid an exhaustive litany of “friends.” An array of eager artists served as opening acts for the Oscar winning group. Onlookers were rightfully confused as an amalgamation of pale-faces meekly took the stage to proclaim, “We do this for the love; we’re already rich!” A dismissive, ‘Damn, is this part of the show?” was the crowd’s collective response.

Next, a hoard of hype-men was challenged with invigorating the audience gathered within the venue’s intimate confines. Microphone malfunctions were unable to distract from the inherent vocal abilities of Leah Haxhi as she joined Zeyi on stage. Zeyi possesses the creative integrity, the organic showmanship, and the undaunted confidence to earn longevity within Hip-Hop. Spitting live lyrics, his presence and laid-back demeanor elicited an authentic excitement from the crowd.

Serving as a cacophonous way to eat time, Sozay, hid behind its production; they were met with polite disinterest. Inebriated by music, Whitney Peyton, delivered tracks like “Woopty  Woo Woo” and even submerged herself into the crowd in an unsuccessful attempt to arouse a mosh pit. Twisted Insane began his set by prancing around the stage wearing a swamp-donkey-goat mask. The ever-entertaining rapper, with an almost-Tech-N9ne cadence, shared both tongue thrusting and endless energy with the spectators. Motivated by the “3 or 4 muthaf*ckas who’s never heard of him,” Twisted’s performance destroyed the chip that was nestled on his shoulder.

Show recap

Finally, once The Menace appeared on stage, anxious supporters were happy to view a familiar face. “New York’s ready to party, so let’s get it,” the Compton native’s words resounded with the crowd. “Double Cup,” “Doing My Thang,” and “Ain’t No Changing Me,” served to bolster his presence on stage. Although Chris Brown was not in attendance, The Menace performed his popular single “Put On,” from his latest project, R.O.M.E. Humility and hunger was apparent to all in attendance. Severing the production, just The Menace’s words edified his motivation towards sustaining on-going success. Succinct and sweet, following his set The Menace posed for pictures and integrated into the crowd.

Delivering the night’s pinnacle performance, Da Mafia 6ix, did not disappoint. After the Grim Reaper’s introduction its members faced the spotlight. Crunchy Black’s strategic footwork held rhythm to the beat. Clothes sporting both pentagrams and bones were donned by the group’s members. “Ridin Spinners,” “Slob On My Knob,” “Who Run It,” “I’m So High,” “Side 2 Side,” “Weak Azz B####,” “Tear The Club Up,” and “Sippin’ On Some Syrup” were amongst the career highlights that were performed.

An obligatory twerk-fest ensued when sexy ladies were invited to the stage. DJ Paul, smoothly began to sing, “Turn Around,” his adamant remix proclaiming, ‘…Turn around we don’t want to see your faces!’ As “Twerk Dat Ass,” played bouncing behinds hypnotized many.

Recent discography additions and a sincere shout out to, The Scarecrow, Lord Infamous were shared from the group. The collision of memories aroused from the action on the stage is worth the economical cost of a ticket!

50 Cent Says SMS Audio Investment Scared Interscope Due To Beats By Dre Ties

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent recently spoke with Hot 103 Jams in Kansas City, and the newly independent artist addressed his decision to break times with his longtime label home Interscope Records.

[ALSO READ: 50 Cent Drops Videos For “Hold On” & “Don’t Worry About It”]

50 spoke about how he believes his connection to SMS Audio created a wedge with Interscope. According to the New York rapper, the label had become so closely tied to Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s Beats By Dre audio brand that it became difficult to move forward.

“The whole building was leaning in a wrong direction for me. Interscope was kind of turning into ‘Beats By Dre Records’,” said 50. “Because I invested in SMS Audio and had a different priority, it was like they were afraid to do a lot of things. I’m not sure all of it was Jimmy’s intentions, but the staff was scared straight.”

He adds, “There was only one marching order for them when they actually left for us to shoot the music video for me, Em, and Adam Levine – “My Life” – was to make sure my headsets weren’t actually in the video.”

50 also discussed how he had very little creative control over the release of his music as an artist signed to a major label. He cited Interscope’s choice to release “Amusement Park” from Curtis as a single in 2007.

“When you’re having a staff meeting and people are deciding what songs should go first or how you should actually go… To give you an example, When I launched ‘Amusement Park’ that definitely wasn’t my pick,” states 50. “It was a song that reminded them of ‘Candy Shop.’ That was an easy hit for the system.”

RZA, Raekwon, GZA & More Share Their Thoughts On Wu-Tang Clan Reunion

(AllHipHop News) Yesterday (March 19) the world finally got to hear “Keep Watch” – an official offering from the upcoming Wu-Tang Clan album A Better Tomorrow.

[ALSO READ: Wu-Tang Clan Releases New Single “Keep Watch”]

As the legendary crew apparently moves towards releasing the full project, Grantland caught up with several members of the Wu to talk about their 20th anniversary.

Read some of the excerpts below.

RZA

“We all agree — me, you, and the rest of the world — that these guys are great by themselves any f**king way,” RZA says. “But they are greater when we come together! We come together, we make platinum, G. That’s the true f**king reward for our top talent. And I say that to the guys. I don’t know who hears me.”

Raekwon

“I would be the first one to say that we cannot leave everything in RZA’s hand no more,” Rae says. “He has done his job to the greatest of his ability when we were younger, but now every man plays an imperative role in this situation. His plan was to do a more humble album. We was like, Nah. You can’t do that with the hardest group in the game.”

[ALSO READ: Raekwon Speaks On Rumors He’s Holding Up Wu-Tang Clan Album]

U-God

These days, U-God’s relationships with other members of the Wu are amicable, if stilted: Raekwon is “tired of hanging around me”; Ghostface has been rebuffing his offer for a full-album team-up, called Goldie and Ghost, for years. “Whatever. I don’t care,” he says. “Maybe when I was a little younger, it might’ve bothered me. I felt entitled. Nine egos, nine dudes, nine everybody thinking they the s**t. [But] I’m not entitled to nothing but what I put work in for.”

Inspectah Deck

“The nucleus has separated,” he says, speaking softly in dim, flickering light. “But it’s temporary. Once RZA throws up that Batman symbol, that Wu-Tang ‘W,’ it’s goin’ be on again. And I can’t wait.”

GZA

“It’s kind of hard to grasp, or understand, the magnitude of this obsession,” he says of the attention around the 20th anniversary. “It would be great to do another album, come back with a banger. But I don’t think we have anything to prove. We proved it already.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Chris Brown Going Crazy In Jail? Rihanna Cries!

I was randomly listening to the radio this morning and they said that Chris Brown was going crazy in jail. Yeah? Yeah. Apparently, Breezy is not doing great in the bing. I thought he was going to be all wild in the penal. NO. He’s apparently in solitary confinement. This means he is on lock down 23 hours a day and alone with no sunlight. The word is he’s talking to himself and smells bad. Black is the new Black. Dude needs to just let them break him, because he’s not about this rebel life.

Meanwhile, rumors are flying that this has caused major issues with Drake and Rihanna. You know how Rihanna and Drake have been going all over the world with each other? Drake reportedly tried to lay the smack down and told RiRi she needs to leave Chris alone. Guess what she allegedly did? She jetted to be “with” Chris Brown the moment she found out he was going to be in jail for violating rehab policy. By the way, rumor has it Chris was smashing his fellow female rehabees -big issue!

TMZ reports Karrueche Tran left him because he kept texting chicks, not crushing his fellow addicts. Damn Breezy!

PS: What the hell does Karrueche Tran do for a living anyway? She ain’t going nowhere. She’s a young Cassie.

Hip Hop Pioneers Announce Plans For Universal Hip Hop Museum

Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Grand Wizard Theodore officially announced plans for the museum at a press conference last week. Organizers are looking to open the Universal Hip Hop Museum inside the Kingsbridge Armory by 2017.

The goal of the UHHM is to highlight Hip Hop’s historical and cultural roots through interactive technology. All aspects of the culture will be featured including graffiti art, break dancing, and DJing.

“Many people have a misconception of what Hip Hop is,” said Afrika Bambaataa, the museum’s chairman. “When they say Hip Hop, they only say it’s the rapper, and there’s a whole culture and movement behind it.”

The proposed location of the museum has not been finalized. The decision of which community based sites will be housed in the redeveloped Kingsbridge Armory will be made by an upcoming advisory board.

Hip-Hop Rumors: What Will Luda Pay Baby Moms?

Remember when Ross said, “F**k with me, you know I got it”? Well, I think the lady that had the baby by Luda thought that about Luda. The word on the street is she will be well compensated for her baby. Not to say that a baby is some sort of prize that keeps giving for 18 years or so, but she’s getting that GUAP!

The latest I saw on Rhymes With Snitch is that Luda’s support payments will ultimately come in around $10k. This is a far cry from what he was paying temporarily. Also, apparently Ludacris’ bid to get the child full custody was shot down, by why of rumors out of the court house. He’s going to get “supervised” visits.

What do they think, Luda is going to show up looking like this or something?
