Meaningful Music: A Benefit Concert For Newton EMTs

Last Friday, February 2, 2013, I was making plans to attend an event in Harlem, when I heard about a benefit in Danbury, CT that caught my attention. There was a hip hop chick named Jass Bianchi that was putting on a show to benefit the EMT’s and first responders from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in December of 2012. I was unaware of the problems that were being suffered by these noble men and women.  PTSD has been an issue acquired from the abhorrent sights that they were witness to on that horrific day.  So, Jass Bianchi decided to get involved and create a benefit to both support these workers and to raise awareness about their plight. After hearing about the wonderful thing Miss Bianchi was doing with her platform, I felt it was only right to use mine to bring the same type of awareness and to attend the event.

The artists she had lined up were all there to share in the sentiment of the evening, which was doing something good for those who do amazing things for the rest of us in society. The show was eclectic with all genre’s of hip hop represented including Ms. Bianchi’s own dope group HOli MOli who took the stage later on in the evening. My personal favorites were Blacastan and Political Animals. I was truly impressed with all three acts as their flows were sick and the music was on point.

But that wasn’t all, there were also break dancers and graph artists, and the principals of Hip Hop were all represented thoroughly! The food upstairs was great and bottom line it was a good time for everyone in attendance.

Connecticut School Shootings
Sandy Hook Fire Fighters

I got a chance to speak with Jass Bianchi and ask what her motivation was for putting the event together and she said, “I went to Sandy Hook Elementary School, and was raised 3 minutes up the street. Their nurse came over to family parties, my father spoke to the father of the only child who survived the day after, my childhood best friend’s brother was the one falsely arrested as the second gunman and my high school friend is a teacher there. As you can see, the tragedy literally hit home for me. I needed to do something! I truly felt specifically for the first responder EMT’s and my mom served on their board when I was younger. Not only that but they volunteer to help others on a daily basis! To throw this event was an honor. I’d also like to thank Pam Janutolo of Asbestos Records, Mark Minnock and Mark Boisvert of MEB Cinema for all of their generous time and effort!”

I asked Jass what she thought about the way the night came together and she said she thought, “The overall feeling was beautiful! I was surrounded by positive energy the whole night. Classmates I haven’t seen in a mad long time were there supporting for the cause. I went from discussing stage time and recording details to reminiscing about girl’s nights and the good times we had growing up. The Chief and assistant Chief of Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corp were there supporting us all along and laughing with my mom on the side.”

Personally, I’m glad that I attended the event and if you are interested in helping, they are selling the CD/DVD performance of the concert online or you can make a donation at  so check it out!

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rapper Is In Grave Danger For Continuously Talking About Ice-T & Coco

Let me state that I don’t know AP.9 and I never met Ice-T. But I am hear to issue a warning, because the hammer is about to drop. My sources are telling me that AP.9, the rapper that nobody knows a song from, has just gone too far. The latest f**kery is that AP just revealed to the Star magazine that he had unprotected sex with Coco.

Here is the problem. Whether or not AP is scared or not, he’s in jeopardy. I’ve BEEN getting emails from people, but most recently some of the real OG’s have steeped up and these are shot callers. I wouldn’t want to be AP.9 on a good day, and this a bad one.

Here is everything that he told the Star magazine.

“I first met Coco at Surrender Nightclub. She invited me to her table; I had a couple of drinks; we exchanged numbers. I could tell we had a physical attraction. She asked me, ‘What are you doing after the club?’ I said, ‘I’m probably just going to get a room and stay right here.’ She said, ‘Well, I’m going with you.’

We had sex. I don’t know who made the first move. It wasn’t making love; it was just sex. We had sex unprotected. I really hope she isn’t pregnant!

She did an interview and said, ‘Oh, he was a superfan, everywhere I went he showed up and ran up to me talking pictures. She threw me under the bus like I was some groupie stalking her.

Ice-T called me and said, ‘My wife wouldn’t f**k with you. You need to tell the truth because my wife wouldn’t do that.’ So I told Ice-T: ‘You want the truth? OK. Me and your wife had sex!’ I got respect for Ice, and I’m not mad at her. But don’t lie about me. Everyone is looking at me like I’m the bad guy.

I don’t have a reason to lie. But she has a reason to lie. She’s the one who’s married.”

Willow Smith Chooses Childhood Over Starring Role in ‘Annie’

(AllHipHop News) Will Smith recently told an audience at Temple University that childhood was the instrumental reason for his daughter, Willow Smith’s dropping out of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, Annie.

The “Whip My Hair” child star began feeling the wear and tear of her hectic schedule which included opening for Justin Beiber on the European leg of his My World tour. When the megastar father tried to persuade his daughter into continuing her Annie obligations he informed the crowd that she succinctly shut down any persuasion attempts:

“I said ‘no,no,no, listen, you’ll be in New York with all of your friends and Beyoncé will be there. You will be singing and dancing,’ and she looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, I have a better idea, how about I just be 12.’”

Previous reports claimed Willow, now 12, had outgrown the role as she was nine at the time of her agreement to join the musical.

Will also revealed his 18 months of ” focusing on the emotional aspect” of his life, his family and how their hectic schedules sometimes skews their perceptions:

“The thing that had become very clear to me is the danger of a material world, and focusing so hard on coming up with money or a house or a job. You focus so hard on those things, and sometimes you can lose focus on why you are doing it in the first place. The only reason to do any of that is to have love.”

The film’s production is a collaboration between Overbrook Entertainment (Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and James Lassiter) and Marcy Media  (Jay-Z, Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith and Jay Brown). The film is tentatively set for a Fall 2014 release.

(AllHipHop News) The embattled Philly MC, Cassidy confirmed on his personal Twitter account yesterday that he will be in Ghana on February 16th for the RLG Accra Night Life Awards. The rapper’s performance is being described as an “honorary moment” in the show’s commercials.

The awards show will celebrate the DJ’s, promoters and all the major players in the Ghana nightlife. The event, organized by EDGE 32 and supported by rIg Communications will be held at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra, Ghana.

Cassidy’s name is not only in the praises of Ghana but also the vitriol of friend-turned-competitor Meek Mill. During an impromptu freestyle session at Philadelphia’s Power 107.9, the MMG MC continued their beef and sent numerous lyrical jabs at  the Larsiny Family general. Meek rapped about Cassidy being in protective custody while incarcerated, Ar-Ab allegedly taking a murder case for Cassidy and also his 2006 car accident.

Freddie Gibbs Sheds Light on MadLib Collaborative Album; Speaks Out Against Police Brutality

(AllHipHop News)  Gary, Indiana raised rapper Freddie Gibbs recently spoke about his inspiration behind Cocaine Piñata, a collaborative project in the works with famed producer Madlib.

In the Duck Down Visuals piece released on RedBullUSA.com, Gibbs stated that he was heavily influenced by the Los Angeles rap trio Strong Arm Steady, who worked with MadLib on their album In Search of Stoney Jackson, released on Stones Throw Records in 2010.

“I got the inspiration to do this project from my homeboy Krndn (formerly Krondon), and Phil [the Agony] and Mitchy [Slick] of Strong Arm Steady.  I saw what they did with Mad Lib and they kickin’ straight street sh*t,” Gibbs explained. “So they really inspired me to really get in the lab with MadLib to be honest.”

“Mad Lib already has a huge fan base already, so for me to do it was a no brainer pretty much.  Once we dropped ‘Thuggin’ I think people started to be like, ‘Ah s**t, you know they kind of got something here.’ That’s when I did too – that was the first song we ever did.  I hadn’t really rapped on s**t like that and it was like a challenge for me lyrically, so I just took it and I think I knocked it out the park. Ever since then we’ve been dropping records and people have been gravitating to them, so we gonna drop the full length ‘Cocaine Piñata’ and it’s going to be dope,” Freddie said.

Gibbs also candidly spoke about his experiences with police brutality and violence. Having been a victim of it himself and having lost a friend named Kinnell MaGee to police brutality, Gibbs makes an effort in his music to put a magnifying glass on police brutality and its wrongs.

“The police murdered my friend in front of his family and everything. They wasn’t compensated for nothing you know really at all. And I just think the police got away with a smooth one, and I talk about that s**t and I try to bring it that life every chance I get. Just not with him, theres people getting killed by police every day, you know what I mean?   I just think that’s f**ked up, the way that they abuse their power – when you get pulled over by a police officer your life is in that n***a hands,” Freddie Gibbs said.

For all those wondering, Gibbs also made it clear that he is officially a former CTE affiliate and focused on his current ESGN record label.

“I’m not really a free agent though, I’m a boss man, so whatever. I don’t even wanna sign none of you n****s, so don’t ask,” Gibbs joked.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Violator Is Now Owned By Chris Lighty’s Ex?

Chris Lighty’s ex-wife/widow may very well be the current owner of Violator Management, for what its worth. You know the company seemed to be somewhat phased out even when Lighty was alive, but it represented so much more historically. I’m talking all the way back in the day stuff out in the streets.

But, a lot has changed.

I am hearing that most of the key people in the company have departed without the leadership of Baby Chris. But, before he passed away to an apparent suicide, he seemingly willed the company away to his widow. She’s rumored to be on the run from the loyal wolves. I’m hearing she is Houston after being run out of Miami. Who knows.

Anyway, 50 Cent’s investigation has turned up basically nothing from what I heard. You know, he got a private investigator but it has not gotten any material evidence that Chris Lighty was murdered.

I thought some of you would like to know this update.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Illseed – “Mobb Mistakes Were Made Deeply”

“Mistakes were made…”

Yesterday, the Mobb Deep rumor set off a sh*t storm, forget a snow storm! Check it here, but don’t digest it, because I’m about to dispel what I wrote!

Hip-Hop Rumors: Mobb Deep’s Reunion Is Really….

It seems like Mobb Deep may have some haters in their camp. My sources MIGHT be their haters. Lets just say that I got some information that I’ve been informed is contrary to what’s really going on with the team of Mobb Deep.

Basically, without divulging too much info, I’m hearing P and Hav are long running friends and friends have squabbles. But, theirs was just publicized and they are famous. I have some other thoughts on this, but I cannot really say much more.

That said, who am I?

Nobody!

All Hail Mobb Deep!

Love & War: Tahiry on Joe Budden, Her New Music and Almost Becoming a Cop

Tahiry Jose will forever be linked to two things she can not shake. Her devil (Joe Budden) and her ass (pun slightly intended). Both have helped her become a fixture on blog sites and magazine covers long before VH1 came calling for Love & Hip Hop New York. You can almost argue that the Dominican bombshell and the No Love Lost rapper’s YouTube adventures back in 2009 was the catalyst for that show’s creation. However, it is 2013 and the Dimes & Rhymes cover beauty has grown from an internet baby into a primetime starlet right before our eyes. Jose, 33, is now a philanthropist, an actress and recently released her first song as a recording artist entitled, “Devil”.  Tahiry spoke in an EXCLUSIVE AllHipHop interview about the making of her song “Devil”, if she will continue dissing Joe Budden’s new girlfriend, Kaylin Garcia and how she almost could have got you arrested.

[ALSO READ: Tahiry’s New Song “Devil”]

AllHipHop: I have to ask you about this song “Devil” that has made its rounds through the internet. You sat down with some writers for the song so how involved were you in the writing process?

Tahiry: I sat down with Shannon Jones.  I was all the way involved. I was f*cken going through it. This was done months and months ago. At the moment, I heard the hook when I was in the studio with Shannon and said “That’s my hook!” This is Tahiry who is just learning, I’m still like “That’s my hook!” It developed into something. You got this hook about a devil that I can relate to because we woman always have a devil we can  never get away from. So you start tapping into your past. So you start thinking about your past situations that are never ending. Speaking with Shannon, we went back and forth with it until “Devil” was created.

Were you worried about the reception? Because calling somebody a devil are fighting words.

But it says your my Devil. [Laughs] So no matter how good or bad your are, you’re MY devil. Everybody has that person who is not good for you. Who is toxic. It’s not good for you but it’s never ending.

I remember watching you back in 2009 when you were shy during your first interview. Now you are on magazine covers, starring in reality shows, doing songs and handling interviews like a pro. What changed in the past 3 or 4 years?

Everything. I’m just evolving as a person. As a personality. As an artist. Basically growth. I started as an internet baby to being on covers.  Joe [Budden] and I first started something that I don’t think we knew would turn into what it did.

How did music out of this? I didn’t see this coming.

Neither did I. [Laughs] Music came from me going through my issues. It was therapeutic for me.

Is this a serious endeavor?

I started to play around and have fun with it and then I realized it was something I wanted to really grow in and I want to learn. It’ sreally new to me and I am taking it serious because I want to get better.

Did you grow up in a musical household?

Yes I did, but it was more so Spanish. I’m Dominican so it was more Salsa and meringue  Then Hip Hop the older I got. Then again, being in a relationship with someone who is a old soul. So I learned from him Kool & The Gang, Prince. Music has always been around me. I remember walking in to the booth and was like “Oh god” and then going back for more. Then going to see a vocal coach. To me it’s proving to myself to prove that I grow at something.

Speaking of your upbringing in Harlem. I just saw the latest episode of Love & Hip Hop and I have to ask. Did you take boxing lessons or something at some point in your life?

Oh my god I am so so so so ashamed of that little part right there. I..I..I got out of character. Yeah I took some boxing classes here and there as a workout. I’m in the gym a lot so yeah, took a few. [Laughs]

I remember Joe told Raqi [Thunder] in an episode, “One thing that would have happened was Tahiry would have whooped your ass. Do you have a violent history?

No, No. I’m actually pretty sweet. But once you take me there… Again, I should have known better. I am not proud of that moment. But through editing, you guys only see about ten seconds of anything when we’ve been going back and forth for hours. But I am not happy about that whatsoever. But I can defend myself. [Laughs]

[ALSO READ: J.R. Smith fined $25k For Tahiry Booty Pic]

Since the show is still being taped, do you watch some of the episodes and think, “Aww man, they should have shown this?”

Absolutely. Of course. I have watched these episodes more than once. Even your train of thought is different when you ‘re watching yourself like ‘damn I should have known better.’ Another thing, we are not in control of the editing. So they edit it and you watch it and it’s like ‘wait a minute.’ I didn’t flip that quick. It actually took me an hour or two. But the viewer doesn’t get to see that.

How has it been doing press and promoting the show with people from the show, specifically Joe Budden, that you may not get along with?

Umm, it depends on the day. Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes we don’t speak. For the most part, I knew most of the cast members before I decided to get on. We’re all cool. We’re able to separate work from personal. Sometimes we intertwine both.

You aren’t just beauty but you have brains and a Bachelor’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. What were trying to do with that? What was your original goal?

My original thought was anything in the law enforcement field. FBI. I decided to try and join the NYPD and that was supposed to be where I was going to go after college  I’m not a cubicle kind of girl. I need to have something different everyday. I thought the NYPD was it. I went as far as taking an exam that was going to promote me right into the Academy. I remember telling my mom ‘There is something bigger out there for me. I don’t know what it is right now But I will not cheat myself. I am going to go and explore. And I am here today.”

So is there any chance someone might one day get arrested by Tahiry Jose?

[Laughs] No there’ s no chance I’ll be a cop.

What’s your future for you relationship-wise? Kids in the future?

Of course I want kids and I want to get married and I want to have the white picket fence. Right now I’m going on dates, but my schedule is so crazy that I don’t even have time to myself. If I date someone who is not going to be understanding that is going to be a problem. Right now I’m just really in love with my work.

Do you think you would prefer dating someone in the business rather than someone out of it, because they might understand your hectic schedule more?

Yeah. I tried dating someone outside of the business and that didn’t work out because they didn’t understand my lifestyle. Ive left that all up to God. [Laughs] It is what it is. The last date I went on. I had to have dinner and then rush out because I had an interview and forgot.

This might sound like a loaded question but given all that you’ve went through I wonder, What is love to you?

Wow. [Laughs] Wow..can you get back to that question? You’re tapping into girl Tahiry. [Laughs]

Ok, I’ll hold you to that. You recently did a charity event for impoverished children in the Dominican Republic.

Yes. Orange Hearts. (Orangehearts.org) It mainly focuses on education. You know, kids are our future. I just did my first fund raiser and it makes me happy. I don’t have much but the little bit  I have, if I can help I will. These kids need our help. We take a lot for granted over here and these kids have nothing. Some of these kids don’t have bookbags.

You’re a model, so your looks are very coveted to say the least. When did you know you could use your looks for your benefit?

My mentality wasn’t on my looks. My mentality was a hustler’s mentality. So it didn’t start with ‘Oh I look good.’ I didn’t even know I was a people person. I wanted to be a cop. I wanted to slap mother f*ckers and lock em up. Due to September 11th I started to bartend. No. I actually started as a cocktail waitress. Then I started looking at how the bartender made money per drink she sold. I’m over here trying to hustle dudes around the club to not go to the bar cause I have to serve them drinks.  The bartender sells a drink and she gets $2 back. I calculated the math. 300 times 2. The least she can do is 600. It is going down. I was thinking flipping. I was thinking hustling. So I got my bartender’s license. I even thought to myself, I would never waitress but I’m at the bar I was working at and the waiters got more money than the bartender did. So I became a waitress. My grind isn’t on how I look. I just have the hustler’s mentality of getting that money.

Whats the most interesting storyline to you on Love and Hip Hop?

Remember, we’re only on the fourth episode so there are a lot of other episode that have not came up yet. Rashida storyline. Winter story line. L’Oreal is up in there. I would say I am the most interested in Yandi and Mendeces story and Jen and Consequence. Ive found myself crying at their stories. As  a woman I can relate to them. I don’t have kids but I watch them and think how would I react. Ooh and I love Olivia. I see her with Rich and now with me working with Cisco Rosado I see similarities like ‘we go through the same things.’

[ALSO READ: Love & Hip Hop star Mendecees Sex Trial Begins]

Rashida and Winter have come to you and kept it 100% real. How many people do you think around you are as honest as those two. Everbody or a select few?

I have no ‘Yes’ people around. I am grown and mature enough to know when I am wrong. I want no ‘Yes’ people around me and my circle is pretty small. People keep it real and I am not upper cutting them. [Laughs]. I’m good with communicating with people without my hands.

You still know how to hit them where it hurts. I saw your Instagram and you sent out some pictures for a certain Kaylin Garcia to look at. Are there going to be any more disses?

No. This girl never did anything to me. Just stay tuned to Love and Hip Hop at 8. You guys watch the show but life is going as we are filming and things happen. But she hasn’t done anything to me and sometimes women act like women. But..I just wanted somethings to be clear. [Laughs] Tune in Monday Nights, 8pm on VH1. [Laughs]

Ok, I have to come back to the question. I let you hold off for a little while but I need to know. What is love to Tahiry Jose?

I don’t even know how to explain it. It’s a feeling. I’ve been told I love sick. When I love I LOVE. It’s unconditional. It is accepting. It is compromising. I don’t know how to explain it. I’ve said it’s when you breathe, eat and sh*t a person. Giving yourself to someone 100% with no question.

So what’s the next hustle?

Building my brand. Building my empire.  Just having a little of Tahiry everywhere. I’m already on national TV. Household name.  From clothes to music. Im working on opening my own bar because it juts makes sense. I love to host. I’ve been behind the bar for 8 to 10 years, it’s time for me to own my own. I’m a firm believer in trying things even if you never know.

When asked how Ross was doing after the shooting the Philadelphia native responded, “People get shot at everyday.”

He went on to say, “He ain’t get shot. He definitely cool.”

Meek’s labelmate Wale seemed to take a more serious tone when speaking to Rashan Ali of Streetz 94.5 in Atlanta. Ali asked the DMV rapper how he felt about rumors that the shooting was staged for publicity.

“I think the media is perpetuating a lot of things…I had to unfollow a rack of people on Twitter when that was happening, ” said Wale. “It’s a joke to ya’ll cause ya’ll see somebody on t.v. everyday. But what if that’s your friend? Cause that’s my friend…I just lost one of my brothers so I don’t even play around with that stuff.”

Longtime Rick Ross rival 50 Cent sparked speculation that the entire shooting was fabricated when the G-Unit leader uploaded a picture of a car on his instagram with the caption, “Hahaha fat boy hit the building? lol it looks staged to me. No hole’s in da car.”
