Ebro Says Southern Hip Hop Is Running Out Of Steam, Only Has Future Left

(AllHipHop News) The South has been a dominant force in Hip Hop for over two decades. From the Geto Boys and OutKast breaking out in the 1990’s to Future and Rick Ross representing for modern-day Southerners, rap stars from below the Mason–Dixon line have long been a major part of the musical landscape.

Radio personality Ebro Darden believes the South’s run is close to coming to an end. The Hot 97 and Beats 1 host addressed a Twitter user’s question about southern-based music by writing, “What a day when the tables will turn… They always do.. South running out of steam… Future all they got left.”

Ebro then began responding to other tweets from users that took issue with his comments. In particular, fans pointed out that North Carolina’s J. Cole is one of the biggest rappers in the game at the moment.

According to Ebro, Cole’s success should be credited to his move to New York City. He even mentioned Kendrick Lamar claiming to be the “King Of New York” on his infamous “Control” verse as evidence NYC is still the center of the Hip Hop universe.

  • ytgarner

my fav is Dave East right now and Joyner Lucas hip hops alive and well just can’t listen to what they give you.

  • whatupdoe

Hip hop period is running out of steam.

  • Pipe dreams….the south IS music period. Y’all lost forever once we got in. We have the most talented writers and musicians in the nation. When the turn up vibe fades its really going to be over cause our real cream will rise to the top

  • Miss.S

Dave East is that nigga.. FACTS.. i just hope he can put together a DOPE ALBUM… but that nigga can spit.. them south niggaz just be sayin gibberish and all kinda other bullshit..

    • Tohn

Co-sign! Dave East is nice!! Skyzoo is dope too!

  • RichFromBX

I’ll never understand why in Hip Hop there’s a need to create a problem where one doesn’t exist. Who cares where the music is coming from as long as it’s hot. Change is good, it’s what keeps things fresh. One area get’s things poppin’ then another area checks the recipe and then adds it’s own flavor to the mix…sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but when it does work that’s when you see a shift start to happen.

    • ancientGOD83

radio cats like him create the prob, then play the new radio selected artist to promote… they create the shift…asking legends “how does it feel to be old in the game, an og?” putting an age limit on the art….its cats like ebro mane….creating the exit door for good artists

      • YoungZari

Exactly. He’s integrity is flawed b/c he’s just saying this in the interests of his own company interests, which is to generate interests lol aka ratings, ironically, HOT 97 is essentially losing stream.

      • I think Ebro know he part of the problem. But he ain’t gon say shit because he wanna be a star & know he can be blackballed the minute he stand up to the powers that be. It’s basically like somebody said above “he just going along to get along“.

      • YoungZari

You’re right. It’s pure cowardice, though.

      • Pretty much. The agenda is real, if you ask me.

    • I’ll never understand why in Hip Hop there’s a need to create a problem where one doesn’t exist…” Because the media love to keep bullshit going…

  • Hakeem

The east coast gotta get back to lyrics and hard beats….
    Not this mumbly mouth trash……
The east can come back if they stop trying to do the southern thing….. Be about the lyrics

  • Hakeem

south is on top by default not because it is nice….
98.9 percent of southern rap is trash……

  • #Mr.Toadman AKA Toastman

Bruh south be known for that mumbling rap. Future is awful

    • ancientGOD83

just like asap gang for wearing dresses and maino, troy ave, stinking ip up….. from drill in the Midwest to tyga and them in cali..young thug sounding horrific….all coasts have been ruined by cats like ebro…radio

    • youngplaya

That mumblin shiii has got to go.. I swear that shiii is the worst.

  • Hakeem

2016 gotta be the yr of REAL HIP HOP and rap…
Not this young thug, tight pants rap……

    • Gap Tooth Bruce

Are you confusing music with fashion taste?

  • Christopher

You had more Future sounding rappers than Big KRIT. You had more Migos sounding music than Killer Mike. All form with little substance will lead to the destruction of southern rap dominating like it once did because eventually people get fed up

    • Yabiggirl

And that is the reason why the South is dying!!

    • Phillip Fuller

Then y is future and migos on top right now and not some east coast rapper? O. Because no one want to hear that shit. But they got bars

  • youngplaya

Ebro got a point. I think the game is open for more influence to different artist because the South doesn’t have those strong 3-4 strong acts all over the radio. It’s true Future is the most dominant Southern Artist right now and no one else is really making that much noise besides Young Thugg. I just don’t understand the NY fall off thing. No one took the crown from NY. NY fell the F off on it’s own because of niggaz bickering too damn much instead of letting a new artist do his thing. If the South is so weak and such trash, shouldn’t NY niggaz easily dominate.

  • ancientGOD83

this the type of cat that made the east vs west bigger than it was….commenting on things they know NOTHING about, while promoting it as if its the truth…bottom line hip hop is over is every reason, or whatever the original culture from that area is called….from harlem to Houston, mtv/bet/radio has came, conquered and left those areas dry…..and its not easy to see why cats like this (non talented, vulture like) feel they have the POWER to wake up and say any region is over…like they are producers, record label owners, a&r’s, ceo’s, etc…. they are radio…one of the last mediums to even receive urban, street music….once those songs hit radio, pretty much over for the integrity of that sound….some of the best artists in any genre didn’t make it to idiots like ebro… I don’t care if he says the south or any place is over…. I just don’t like that he feels he has the POWER in the artform to just say that and feel his word is the all and all…he need to worry bout them blisters on his lip… the only time in life I will shout out riff raff for exposing dude

  • youngplaya

The real problem is no leaders and no vision. It’s easy to go in the studio and put out what you think everyone wants to hear and say what everyone else says. A real artist will say how we feels at least some of the time. These niggaz go along to get along and d*** ride any artist that’s hot whether they agree with the foolery the artist portrays or not. All these different issues in the hood and all I hear is sip this spend that? man cmon

  • Ebro & the rest of them dickriders gotta go!!!

  • ursocalledgod

this is the same idiot that said NAS wasn’t one of thee best storytellers in hip hop smh. as long as scarface is still alive the south aint going anywhere. fuc this clown.

  • I can’t front. Ebro has a point. The South’s ride is almost done. Hip hop runs in cycles. Every region has its shine and then had to either elevate or bow to a new area. The southern giants are almost gone. And a lot of it was self-inflicted exile. T.l. Was on some sellout/gun owner/druggie sh*t. Outkast broke up (yeah I said it). Pimp C took himself out the game. It is what it is. But things can come back around. Right now the ball is in Cali. That movement has been secretly running sh*t for about 5 years. Who knows? New York could see a return….

    • Yabiggirl

Im from Philly and I agree with this message!!! lol, shoutout to everyone coast that’s about getting to a dolla

    • Phillip Fuller

      Cali. Lmao.

  • Noneya Business

I agree. Everyone trying to sound like Future and migos anyway. But Gucci be home this year let’s see what happens. South movement got about 6 months left

  • VENDETTA

the difference is, the borders in hip hop are not what they were 10 years ago. nowadays you can get any music you want. so, today you have to really stand out because you are in competition with everyone to get out. back then, you only had to compete with your region. i definately dont agree with ebro, because to say the south is losing steam, is saying that somewhere else is picking up steam..i just think its all mixed in today

  • Black

He’s Absolutely right though. I see a resurgence of North East(NYC,NJ,Philly) & West Coast hip-hop on the hoizon. Denying it won’t stop it from happening

    • Phillip Fuller

      By who. Meek lllllllllllll’s. Who

  • Gap Tooth Bruce

Yall Ny niggas delusional…..who wants to go to the club and hear BARZ? Yall the Zombies out here not us be forreal!

  • Gap Tooth Bruce

Smart niggas from Up North will keep winning and getting shows….like Fetty, French, Asap, Meek….all you bar babies will be crying in 2017 screaming the same shit….JUST MAKE SOME DOPE MUSIC AND STOP THE TEARS!

    • Papi Peligro

All got down south styles. Except Meek.

  • Gap Tooth Bruce

Thats what killed NY in the first place…..The Hate….getcha songs up!

  • Yabiggirl

The South is dying because they allowed Future/Migos type artist to run the show! They’re all about beats and hooks and lyrically, they’re all baby ass wipes! lol, Future doesn’t get credit for being a rapper, he’s a producer and a hit maker. People actually wanna hear real music, music that you can understand. The poppin south rappers don’t even bother to pronounce their words in songs, “Humminy humminy humminy dibbily dibbly dibbly YAhhhhhhh”!! I fucks with Down South because of Jeezy and TI and Killer Mike and Scarface, etc…but this new shit is whats gonna bring the heat back to the east!!!

  • Papi Peligro

East Coast hiphop has never died off. What ya’ll don’t realize is the same people have sold out the concerts and have been the top earners in hiphop for 20 years. Go look at the list of top Earners last year. Drake Nikki only people weren’t there 10 years ago. Still don’t make as much as NY. Even Baby with all his artist doesn’t make as much as NY ninjas. Few new ninjas ever crack the list of top 20.

    • Phillip Fuller

Stfu. They’er not doing it from rap nigga. Shit name one that sold a million.

      • Papi Peligro

Hov. Name a Down South Ninja going platinum besides Wayne, TI, Luda. Name a new down south dude going platinum. CAN’T.

      • Phillip Fuller

        Name anybody that went platinum.
        The only one was Drake.

      • Papi Peligro

Even Nicki Minaj is New York.

      • Phillip Fuller

But she is singed by the south and the only reason she jumped off is because she came to the south . That she not on. The Roc or bad boy or. Def Jam. She is on cash money. THE SOUTH

  • WORLD DOMINATOR

Yeah that mush mouthed, country ass, NOT sayin’ nuthin’, autotuned gibberrish is SO OVER!
Played out, ran out of steam, ‘rappers’ with lil or NO talent, too manyof them, NO REAL SUBSTANCE! Fake Rick Ross aka Officer Ricky is THE WORST, all the other clowns are followers!
    End of the line, next!

  • IDNTGIVAFUCKBOUTNOTHING

Even if the South runs “Out of Steam” Its not like NY is going to get the Crown Back. If anything the West Coast is making a Run at the Title with alot of Young Gifted Artists. Ebro mentioning Juelz and Dipset but they been fell off like 10 Years ago. If the South Fall Off it’s because we dont Support our Own Artists the Way that the West supports Kendrick, and the same way NYC rides for J-Cole. They sold alot of records but I bet if you measured it a Majority of those sales came from their home states and their own Region.

  • timwest1000

The South is still alive in East Coast rappers. ASAP mob, Wiz, Wale. Before Fetty Wop there was FABO. GTFOH

  • Live Well

Future is the main reason its running out of steam. The south is hitching their wagon to a mumble mouth simpleton who’s sound is easily replicated.

  • Young Splash

I do feel the shift in the wind……

    • Larry Sandwiches

  • YouTight

Oh now Coon Bro wants to defend NY hip hop? This guy ran hot 97 into the ground with all this south music.

  • CooL_KiD_305

The radio has no real importance in music anymore. It’s all about the Internet and the Internet is what really determines who is hot or not. Ebro doesn’t know anything about music…I give Rosenberg a lot of credit because he be up on new music and new artists. But the dominance of the SOUTH IS HERE TO STAY!!!!

    • therealest1

That Jew Rosenberg is also an ass kisser and dick rider so he doesn’t deserve much credibility.

      • CooL_KiD_305

Lol…yeah but he knows his music and music history. I respect that about the Jew.

    • Executive

Ny want to sound like they’re in the trap.

I’ll put this emcee catalog up against anything that my brethren in the southern region has produced since ’94 to the present.

      • Yeah but we’re talking about right now.

      • Isa Ibn Maryam

        I believe I stated PRESENT…smh.

      • I believe you didn’t understand …smh.

It’s about what he is doing NOW musically. That “right now”.
Not what your opinion of Nas’ body of work is -“right now”.

      • Isa Ibn Maryam

Really outside of Scarface who else in the south is putting out anything worth purchasing RIGHT NOW?

  • lyrical exercise

Since the south started dominating the numbers been dropping. So something gotta give

    • Eastatlantasown6

Social media and being independent is the reason numbers dropped sir has nothing to do with southern artist

Lmao tell the other genre that. Lyrical content is also down

      • lyrical exercise

There’s a difference between numbers being down because the internet and being dead. 2 rappers did go platinum and they have content and a third is almost there. The rest of hip-hop aint even going gold.

How his argument is irrelevant: He says the south and only names Atlanta rappers, people need to understand the south is not just turn up and trap rappers even though I’m a die hard trap rap fan there’s plenty of SOUTHERN artists that are lyrical as well… Ice berg, burga, cyhi, pill, spitta (not curren$y), doughbeezy, Le$, killa kyleon, ra ra, big krit and plenty more

    • Savimbi

Unfortunately, the industry has only pushed the likes of Migos, and countless of other mindless southern artists…I personally believe that Southern Hip-hop emcee have a bit more soul than NY artists in their Music I.E Cyhi could eat up any NY cat lyrically and he, overall puts out much better music than a lot of NY dudes.

      • Larry Sandwiches

He wont eat up Charles Hamilton lyrically.

  • CountryLAC

I would agree that Future does mumble and isn’t the greatest lyricist. However, Future does understand the principles of music and in particular melody. He once compared his hooks to nursery rhymes like London bridge in which the melody is instantly recognizable without the words. Future grew up being influenced by the Dungeon Family so it’s rather obvious that he has been exposed to conscious Southern Hip-Hop. Melodic hooks and verse is his niche. Unfortunately, a million and one other rappers decided to jump on the bandwagon.

  • disqus_ky46ADPpRL

Hey Ebro…….IT ALL STARTS WITH AND YOUR STATION TO START PLAYIN NYC HIP HOP AND CUT THE SHIT!!!! PROBLEM SOLVED.

    • Jmo-Texas

I was gonna say the same thing! Im not even from NY and know it starts with those DJs and programming directors playing more east coast music. Im from Houston and its not much better on the main rap station..if it wasnt for the internet I’d be stuck listening to the radio and all they play is Young Thug, Future, and some other mediocre “autotune southern artists”. So if Ebro is going off of the crap their station plays then Id think the South would be running out of steam too. But considering he knows thats a lie, since there are probably 20 southern rappers old and young waiting to get their next shot..he just needs to accept the southern rappers arent going anywhere and that he just needs to start playing more east coast material. I personally dont have an issue, I like plenty of music that comes from the east, radio stations just dont play any of it… its like they only play what the 14-18 year olds call and request. smh

  • Markus

The music isn’t being influenced by New York anymore. So where most of the stars in rap are coming from, who knows? I’m just sure where it’s not coming from.

All down south rappers sound the same from migos to thugger to post molone all that trash sounds the same… I cant tell the difference…. Back in the day rappers talked about stories or why their flow/style was better… Now its my rims, iced out, coke, sippin lean, grills, trap house and strip club is all the rap about…. That’s it… Nothing separates anyone in the game we call hip hop

  • HalfPast7

Look in order for the East to come back a few things need to happen. The stripclub is what dominates now so naturally strip club/twerking music is gonna always be popular as long as the clubs are still popular. You can argue that well if NY come back with original music then we can get clubs like Speed up n running again. Wrong, the youth ain’t gonna dance to re-invented NY music that sound the same as before because it is just a thing of the past, point blank. You gotta accept the fact that IF NY make a comeback it’s gonna be because of lyrical dudes with southern flows. The only way that NY sound will make its way back to the airwaves if there’s an actual demand from halfway intelligent people that know how to read and are able to understand metaphors, similes, double entendres n shit like that. That may not happen for a while. Who knows? Maybe the babies who get tired of seeing they moms twerk right now will be the ones who gonna fiend for music with substance. But til then, if the strip clubs got the crowd on lock then so will the South. Peace.

    • TruthHurts

      Very smart point

    • Julius Rogers

Your right. A degree of wiser listeners will have to want more. The over sexuality and exploitation of women even by women, will have to change. NYer with southern flow. I like the sound of that bro. Substantial lyrics southern flow. I may hay to try that.

  • chippc

Even though Ebro may be right on this time, I still say eat a dick cuz NY cats been screaming that same sh1t for a decade plus. You would think that by now folks would stop putting so much emphasis in what region the music comes from and instead try to keep it alive.

  • chippc

The stuff they play now is some kind of emo druggy depressed mumble mouth shit or a dance inspired joint. And Ebro himself is one of the main facilitators that’s pushing this BS. Now he wanna jump back on the NYC hip hop bandwagon. Dude reminds me of one of those cats who backs another team outside of their city because their hot, but when the home team has a good draft, he hops back on home teams d1ck anticipating what they are gonna do in the upcoming season.

  • Larry Sandwiches

SOUTHERN RAP: Chicks like it because they can dance to it and hear it on the radio

NYC RAP: you can smoke to it and hear real sh!t.

WEST COAST RAP: Dudes like it cus they can pretend to it….(kidding!)

    • Go Getter 2

NYC RAP: puts you straight to sleep, only people from NY like it.

      • Larry Sandwiches

        i like southern rap too.

      • TruthHurts

unfortunately these days that’s the truth.

  • RazaBladeKing

Man. This is just like the 90s wit that whole East Coast – West Coast beef. I remember how much static I had with Oregon n****s back then. We was on them Seattle boys’ necks somethin heavy. Or maybe none of that happened. Maybe the media took a beef between two record labels and turned it into a bigger story for their own profit. I’m pretty sure the Outlawz were on that Biggie diss, and they’re from Jersey. The South isn’t “on”, and the East isn’t “off”; stupidity and self-destruction is “on”, and it doesn’t matter if you’re from NY (French Montana), Cali (Tyga), or ATL (Future). Just remember, the fans, labels, and artists are at play here, but the fans have all the power… they’ve got the $$$, and that’s what the industry (ie artists and labels) run on, and react to. So… what’s the last album YOU bought? When’s the last time YOU called the station to request somethin?

    • Larry Sandwiches

      Hey Razor Blade,
I agree with everything you said here. I think the argument is fun, until it gets serious tho. It seems like this time its only the fans arguing it, cus these days all these artists are featuring on EVERYBODY’s sh!t.

Sh!t, fans give Rick Ross a hard time, but just look at his features on his newest cd or who he’s featured with this past year. Raekwon and Nas co-sign him, but little jimmy from the street aint got nuthin but sh!t to talk about a job he had when he was young. Oh well.

Last CD i bought was Jadakiss “Top 5 Dead or Alive”
Last song I requested on the radio was this weekend Charles Hamilton “Face the Music”……but they didnt play it.

      • RazaBladeKing

You know I usually don’t fool with ya, but SALUTE for puttin your money where your mouth is. The mainstream rap $$$s are a sure sign that the silent majority of fans don’t like what they’re bein force-fed, yet when Slaughterhouse drops they only move like 20K too… that aint much better than Young Thug. The machine will be changed at the cash register, not in the comment sections of these blogs.

      • Larry Sandwiches

I got iMusic, but I still like having that physical collection. I refuse to illegally stream or download any music (or movies for that matter). People complain about inflation and whatnot as reasons for downloading sh!t. The fact is, CDs still have the exact same price point as they had in the early 90’s at $15-$16 a pop, and usually if you get them brand new they are only $9.99!!! I try not to hate on people stealin music (cus then it would be me just constantly b!tching at folks), but its hard listenin to people talk about something they care about when they steal from it. And to be clear, Im talkin about the people in my life that steal it, not the people on this message board. But yeah, I purchase a few physical cd’s a month.

So Ebro wants to jump on the NYC bandwagon after he was the main one “pushing” all the so-called commercial joints that wasn’t from NY…. Dudes been calling him out on that for over a decade

  • sewamouf

He’s not right about the south falling, but he’s right about Juelz and Dipset co-signing Wayne and NYC helping J.Cole’s push. He doesnt even rhyme like a southerner or with a southern accent. He has an east coast accent.

  • TruthHurts

Ebro simply likes to speak to cause controversy. Unfortunately East/West won’t get back on top until they have more artists getting heavy commercial rotation. One artist, and one state isn’t going to do it for a whole coast. The problem is that the “East” is basically considered NYC, and the “West” is basically considered California. The south has Georgia, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Carolina, Tennessee, etc. For either West/East to reign again we need the Seattle, Arizona, Philly, Boston, etc. artists to start putting it down on major radio. That’s coming from somebody who lived in the West during the Death Row era and grew up during the East’s heyday.

    • Shawn Orjiakor

doesn’t matter about with other states in the region, Cali and NY can still represent west and east respectively. You can’t say Chicago got support from Oklahoma, Kentucky, Detroit, St. Louis, etc and they still got buzz.

  • Mrs. Davis804

I see puss still on that divide N conquer bullshit. Every coast with those who inherited the soul to make contributions to the vernacular matter. It’s even better if they come together. But those who want a place at the table, but aren’t heirs, love to see brother against brother. So they can keep weaseling their way to the feast. Smh.

  • bluelight74

Stop letting outside maggots worm their way in to cause dissension among the ranks.

    • Mrs. Davis804

Very true. We need another self-destruction, or we’re all in the same gang. Not more division, that’s how you can see this weasel’s motives. Fcuk the snakes being on the plane, they piloting the bish. We actually have a great reason for all coasts to unite, and niggas is still talking North vs. South? And nobody sees the irony? Smmfh.

      • Chyze

That’s that east coast ego in the way with Ebro. He’s only big in NYC and he thinks that matters worldwide. I was stationed overseas and they went crazy over hip hop period. Funny thing is….who does NYC really have that’s actually poppin without a southern cosign….minus Jay-Z? I’ll wait….and I mean who is actually selling albums/downloads not who you personally like.

      • Mrs. Davis804

I get what you are saying, but I personally wouldn’t even list those I like. I’m tired of the aspects of black music being diminished by allowing album sales and downloads to give them worth. Black music has completely drifted away from what it’s intended purpose was just to appease the very machine that shunned it and then stole it. But I hear you though.

      • Julius Rogers

NY egos killed NY rap. Shit NYer were so stuck on their struggle they even alienated the rest of the state. West coast and southern rap is more of an ENBLOC. If NYS was more unified the sound would of been more universally diverse. NY killed it’s own movement by complacency**

  • CBMG

lets stop calling southern rap “Hip-hop” because its not! Its much more than that,…guys like Future, and Thug took rap music to a whole nother level by adding melodics! They brought a breath of fresh air to music . New bass patterns, flow patterns, faster pace flows, more energetic feeling with the words they say, using their voices as instruments by making various sounds for adlibs, etc,..That New York rippity rhyme shit is old and over with, people want to listen to music they can enjoy and have a good time to, music that can remove them from their shitty life and take them to a place of careless fun (turn up) …not that old struggle super lyrical shit. Ny is bitter and mad they lost the torch when Wayne came back with Go Dj!!!! They shit is garbage now & The south is still producing hit makers and isnt going to stop anytime soon

    • Julius Rogers

Can’t front this Southern Rap is catchy and melodic. Can’t front sometimes I’m like what is it? Can’t front it’s the in shit and it’s going nowhere. At least not until people get wiser and demand real lyrics. Rippidy rap? Homie the south slur is just sounds. Catchy nonsense to be frank. It’s winning but so is Trump at the moment. #gofigure

    • WESTPHILLY QUICK

Be real though, the south did NOT birth melodies in rap. What about Bone!?!? What about Nelly!?!? Shit even Missy Elliott. The turn up music is cool but its overrunning the genre and is getting corny bc the sound is so limited that most of it sounds similar.

All of this new BS is wack.

  • Everette White

I live in N.C. which is considered down south. That turn up crap is wack as hell. Make you seem ignorant and slave like. Like here comes the Bull commercials. My original spot was North East N.C. and we didn’t come up listing to much of that down south music. Only started to hear that when I moved to Central N.C.

  • Mista

Let the South and NY keep having a civil war!!! The West coast taking over anyway!
