Patient Picasso: No Mistakes Allowed

Rising rapper Patient Picasso does it all. From producing, rapping and engineering to tattooing himself.

Patient Picasso has had some incredible looks in the industry, from producing West Coast legend YoYo’s forthcoming single “Out Of Control” (her first in two decades) to having his record “In My Vibe” be featured as one of the top jingles on iHeartRadio’s Toyota commercial. And despite having made music daily for the past 15 years, he still feels he’s just getting started.

It’s not every day you find someone who can rap, produce, mix, master, and even shoot their videos for their songs all on their own. AllHipHop caught up with Picasso to discuss collaborating with YoYo, tattooing his own body, and dream collab.

AllHipHop: I actually recently sat with YoYo, talk about linking with her on her new single.

Patient Picasso: It’s crazy. That was connected all through my good friend and second manager, Big Mike Rob. First day I was introduced to her, she was filming for Love & Hip Hop. The following day, we linked and shot a scene for the E Channel, so I’ll also be on there.

AllHipHop: What show was that?

Patient Picasso: It’s a new daily show they have, should be released sometime later this fall or next year. I had the opportunity to play her a record for that show, and overall new music. She loved the record and it was set from there. It’s been a blessing. It’s still crazy, like I came up listening to her.

AllHipHop: That’s huge! Her first single in 20 years & to have your name featured on it.

Patient Picasso: Man, it’s amazing. I’m honored. I would’ve never thought that I’d be meeting YoYo and working with her. Her being so down-to-earth and so embracing, it’s dope.

AllHipHop: What did you learn from her? Because she’s a legend obviously.

Patient Picasso: Too many things to count. Don’t wait, just go. Take more initiative on anything. Don’t be afraid of no. Just continue working no matter what.

AllHipHop: How was shooting Love & Hip Hop?

Patient Picasso: It’s fun. The first scene, she had YoYo School of Hip Hop. The second scene we did was at a studio called The Nest, that was me, Apple Watts, Brittney B, and YoYo. That was my first time being on Love & Hip Hop, I’ve always wanted to be on that show. It’s been really dope.

AllHipHop: What is it you want fans to get from your story?

Patient Picasso: Just really know my struggle and know my overall talent. I just want to make the best music possible. When they get me, they fully get me. From the music to the drums to the engineering, it’s all 100% me. It’s no cut on this good dope I’m giving them. [laughs]

AllHipHop: That’s crazy you do everything by yourself.

Patient Picasso: Absolutely, all the way down to the tattoos. My whole arm, I did that myself. I’m not the greatest drawer in the world, but it’s all me. I think it’s easier working on yourself.

AllHipHop: Easier? That’s so much pressure! What if you mess up?

Patient Picasso: You have to have the mindset “okay if I mess up, oh well.” I’ve always taken that approach because growing up, I didn’t have a lot of money and had to get things done for myself. So I started cutting my own hair. I didn’t have money for tattoos, so I built my first tattoo machine. It wasn’t until 6 months ago where I barely got a real tattoo machine to tattoo myself.

AllHipHop: How often are you in the club?

Patient Picasso: Every week, but it’s mostly business. Either a red carpet that’s being held at a club or you have a mansion party that’s turned into a club environment or just an overall performance.

AllHipHop: Dream collab?

Patient Picasso: Uncle Snoop. LL Cool J… I’m trying to think of a female artist. If I didn’t have YoYo, I’d say her. Those two for now. It would take some time for me to come up with a list.

AllHipHop: What can expect music-wise? I know that you dropped a project last year.

Patient Picasso: Since then, I’ve just been giving single and single, video after video. I edit all my own music videos as well. I know how to shoot and edit, I went to school for all that. Just more music, more shows, and more videos.
