Unbought and Unbossed: An Analysis Of Damon Dash’s Book “Culture Vultures”

By Biba Adams

(AllHipHop Features) In 1968, Brooklyn-born Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman elected to Congress. Four years later, she became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Chisholm was known for being, unapologetically, for the people. Unbought and Unbossed was her autobiography published in 1970. It became her slogan and is engraved on her tombstone.

Chisholm once said, “I am not the candidate of Black America, although I am Black and proud. I’m not the candidate of the women’s movement of this country, although I am a woman and I’m equally proud of that. I’m not the candidate of any political bosses or fat cats or special interests. I am the candidate of the people. And my presence before you now symbolizes a new era in American political history.”

As I read Damon Dash’s new book, Culture Vultures: Conversations with Damon Dash, I was reminded of Shirley Chisholm and “unbought and unbossed.” Dash sees himself as a defender of his culture and people, and he is definitely his own boss. His message is about financial independence, collective economics, and pride in one’s culture. And isn’t that what we’ve all been saying? #WakandaForever

Isn’t that what 4:44 was about too?

Roc-A-Fella Records was a co-venture with Def Jam. Dash, with Biggs Burke, and Jay-Z, created of one of the greatest Hip-Hop dynasties of all time and the incubator of one of the greatest rappers of all time. The producers, other artists, and staff. Roc-A-Wear. The historic (self-funded) Hard Knock Life Tour. Paid in Full. And on and on. And Dash has dozens of his own businesses. We all know the stats and you can read more about most of that in the book. This is a review. Besides, some of us OG’s still do that dance when “Big Pimpin” comes on.

The challenge with Dame is the delivery. Because it is kinda harsh to hear someone be called a “vulture,” it makes me cringe. That’s a pretty f##king gross bird. And it’s a little unnerving to see him call music executives out by name. Because most people don’t. But, that’s Damon Dash.

Plus, he has a point.

cul·ture vul·ture

noun

informal

plural noun: culture vultures

a person who is very interested in the arts, especially to an obsessive degree.

Dash defines a Culture Vulture as “someone who will exploit a life and culture they don’t abide by, making money from it, while completely disrespecting it.” –p. 1

For example, Dash is adamantly against the 360-deal.

“Yeah, But, that’s why I don’t like the 360 for a creative because then corporate takes some of your show and merchandise revenue. They take your merch, your show, and they also take your endorsements,” Dame said, “That s### is crazy. Lyor invented that b#######. That’s why it was better before the 360 deals hit the game.” –p. 195

Culture Vultures: Conversations with Damon Dash came about through his friend and barber, Kenyatta Griggs. Having been cutting Dame’s hair for over a decade, Griggs is also a successful salon owner, author, and speaker with Hip Hop Motivation, a personal development company. He creates self-help entertainment like the film and book series, The Secret to Ballin: Journey.

It is primarily a business book. A manifesto of the urgency of financial independence. Culture Vultures was self-published by Poppington and Hip Hop Motivation. Released on February 13th, the book is about so much more than his relationship with the music industry, which is the least of his concerns and interests. It’s about his passion for business, his love of his children and his #wifeyforlifey, Raquel M. Horn as well as his fervent belief in investing in women. He talks about spirituality, diabetes, the internet.

He talks about Aaliyah. The chapter is only three pages long. But they are three very sad pages.

“I would have to say it was ‘the’ worst pain I had ever felt.” -p. 218

I thought Culture Vultures: Conversations with Damon Dash was a great book. It could be a little shorter and it uses bold text a lot, which got a little distracting. Still, it’s good. Redman drops by and is in the book for a couple chapters, which is fun. It’s very visual full of photos largely of Dash at his home in Malibu where a lot of the interviews and filming/recording for the documentary and audiobook took place.

Of course, there’s also a documentary and an audiobook… it’s Damon Dash.

“Just got off the phone with @meekmill ….I love my guy…He’s in a really good space and wanted me to share some things with you guys!!!!! #FreeMeekMill #Philadelphia #MyBrother #PositivityBeatsNegativityEveryDayOfTheWeek,” he captioned the photo of the screenshot of the lengthy note he had written.

“Just had an amazing talk with Meek Mill… I’m loving his mental right now. He is not allowing this minor setback in life to break him… instead he is embracing it and using it as motivation to improve on himself. He is truly displaying a different level of mental toughness,” Hart wrote.

“He wanted me to tell all of his fans and supporters that he truly appreciates all of your support & that he loves all of you for it. All of our lives have the potential to be amazing stories… it’s up to us to write out own story… WE control our OWN destiny…”

“Stay strong Meek. Keep your head up. We are celebrating as soon as you get home!!!”

Meek Mill received some good news earlier today (April 16) when prosecutors formally agreed his 2008 conviction for gun and drugs should be completely vacated over corruption allegations levied at the arresting officer in the case.

Rising rapper and slasher Justin Snow unleashed his self-directed “Fortnite” music video co-directed by Greg Myers this past Friday April 6th.

In the video Justin Snow’s moodus operandi is #PrettyGirlsGetSlain, which is his twisted metaphor for intercourse.

The video’s concept plays like a slasher film fantasy for women who are attracted to the bad guys, continuing themes from previous horrific visuals like those fromSnow’s Body Count project.

In the short film, women are essentially role playing their favorite fantasy with a horror movie villain.

Recruiting beautiful unsuspecting victims, Snow has raised eyebrows with his blood-splattered polaroid pictures and NSFW films which air regularly on his IG page, gaining attention from the XO movement and other industry insiders.

As such Snow’s Instagram feed has become widely popular as he metaphorically slays beautiful women also drawing attention from the likes of Playboi Carti, Rich The Kid, Ian Conner, A$AP Bari, Uno the Activist and more.

Wizkid Missed Coachella Over Visa Issues With The U.S.

(AllHipHop News) Drake’s “One Dance” collaborator Wizkid was forced to scrap his Saturday set at Coachella due to visa issues.

The Nigerian musician alerted fans to the problems hours before his mid-afternoon set time, revealing that some members of his band hadn’t been able to get into the U.S. on time.

“Band had some visa issues… I’m upset bt See y’all next week (sic),” he tweeted, adding: “Next weeknd! Bring ur flags!!”

Festival bosses also released a statement about Wizkid’s no-show, writing: “We are sorry to announce that Wizkid is unable to make it into the country to join us this weekend but will be performing next weekend.”

He’s not the first international Coachella act to bail due to visa problems – French rappers PNL missed the first weekend of the festival last year, while the late Amy Winehouse had to cancel her 2009 Coachella performance because she couldn’t get a work visa on time.

Gunplay Wants His Ex-Girl’s Strip Club Headbutting Lawsuit Dismissed

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Gunplay is denying charges of assault after he allegedly struck his ex-girlfriend in quite an unusual way.

Gunplay is accused of head-butting his ex- Aneka Johnston in the parking lot of Florida adult club The Office.

An altercation broke out between the “Love and Hip Hop: Miami” star after he arrived with his current girlfriend, Keyara on New Year’s Day.

During the argument, Gunplay, born Richard Morales, Jr., allegedly headbutted Johnston, who was treated at a local hospital for bruising to her face and neck, and a scratched cornea.

Gunplay claims his ex-girlfriend was the aggressor and that he was merely defending himself.

He is asking for the case to be dismissed

T.I. Aint Trying To Hear An Apology From Starbucks

(AllHipHop News) Rap star T.I. is calling for a boycott of Starbucks, after a video went viral showing to black men being arrested, just for sitting inside of a Philadelphia location.

Protesters are currently picketing a Center City Starbucks at 18th and Spruce Street after the two men were arrested last Thursday (April 12), while waiting to meet with a white colleague.

A manager at Starbucks called the cops on the men, claiming they were trespassing in the venue after they asked to use the bathroom instead of making a purchase.

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson has apologized and is seeking to meet the victims face to face.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome in our store on Thursday were reprehensible,” Kevin Johnson said. “They were wrong,” Johnson said. “For that, I personally apologize to the two gentlemen that visited our store.”

T.I. felt that Starbucks needs to do more than host meetings and give apologies.

“We should reserve our right to stop spending our money places that don’t respect us equally. Until they have made some progressive steps to let us know how they plan on rectifying the situation. I don’t see any other answer. If there’s one thing that America has shown us there’s only two ways you can get their attention. The loss of life and the loss of finances.”

Starbucks should not doubt T.I.’s clout.

Last October, the rapper publicly announced a boycott of Houston’s, after several patrons claimed that they were discriminated against over there seating policies.

Owners of the chain felt the backlash the rapper’s boycott caused and invited him to help the company with diversity training.

BREAKING NEWS: Prosecutors Agree Meek Mill’s Conviction Should Be Vacated

(AllHipHop News) Meek Mill received the best news yet in his ongoing war for freedom.

Today during a status hearing, the Philadelphia D.A. told Judge Genece Brinkley the believe Meek’s 2008 drug and gun conviction should be vacated and he should be granted a new trial.

Over the past month, Meek received a co-sign from the D.A. and the Governor after news broke, suggesting the arresting officer in Meek’s original case had been named as part of a police corruption scandal in Philadelphia.

The cop had been accused of lying under oath in a number of cases, including Meek’s.

Now, both the prosecutors in the case and Meek Mill’s defense attorneys both agree that the rapper did not receive a fair trial.

The rapper’s legal team is seeking to have the entire case overturned, but they still must get past Judge Genece Brinkley, who presides over Meek’s case.

The rapper maintains Judge Brinkley has a vendetta against him for refusing to record a tribute song in his honor and ditch Roc Nation management in favor of local veteran, Charlie Mack.

Despite having such overwhelming evidence, Judge Brinkley still refused to rule on the case and even barred Meek’s attorney’s from presenting their arguments that their client should be released immediately.

Meek’s lawyer Brian McMonagle promised to appeal to a higher court to secure Meek’s release immediately.

Meanwhile, thousands of supporters were on hand in Philadelphia today (April 16), to celebrate the release of rapper Meek Mill.

As for Meek, he plans to use the worldwide attention to his case to help other people with fewer means get justice too.

“I think God delivered me a job to helping people, helping minorities that come from these situations like myself,” Meek said of his post-release plans during an interview with Lester Holt.

“I say don’t show me no pity because this is my life. This is what I’ve been going through. And I think God put me in this position to be able to do a show with Lester Holt and open up eyes for other young black men,” Meek said.

Protesters gathered in front of the Criminal Justice Center in Center City to support Meek’s bid for freedom.

Method Man Calls Atlanta The New New York, Talks Male Rappers Being Androgynous

(AllHipHop News) Wu-Tang Clan member Clifford “Method Man” Smith connected with The Daily Beast to discuss the new season of his TBS rap competition show Drop the Mic. The interview also featured the New Yorker talking about his hometown Hip Hop scene.

“I feel like we lost our identity but it was good for the unification of hip-hop as a whole. Atlanta is the new New York,” said Method Man. He added, “The South did their thang and they cannot be blamed for the state of hip-hop right now—no one can be blamed for that, these are just cycles that the music has to go through.”

In addition, the Tical album creator spoke on the breaking down of race and gender barriers in Hip Hop. Meth also addressed modern male Hip Hop stars – like Atlanta’s Young Thug- embracing androgyny.

“It’s cool when one person is doing it, and you say, ‘OK, that’s his thing,’ but then when it becomes a trend…They’re basically doing what rock ‘n’ rollers did with the fingernail-painting, the long hair, jumpin’ in the crowd—they want to be rock stars now. Be that, but don’t call it hip-hop. I think it’s different, but it has its place,” said the 47-year-old.

Meth continued, “Would I rather sit there and listen to Rakim at a concert? Probably. I would love to listen to Rakim all day on my radio. But nowadays, if I’m at a concert, I’m gonna see Kendrick, I’m gonna see Rae Sremmurd, I’m gonna see these artists that turn up the way I would be doing if I was makin’ that kind of music.”

While Johnny Blaze acknowledged some performers in the new generation, he had a more unfavorable opinion on Lil Xan’s comments about Tupac Shakur. He stated, “These f-ckin’ idiots. That’s like me tryin’ to sh-t on N.W.A. It’s because of N.W.A that I don’t got [to censor] my f-ckin’ curse words on my records and I can say ‘f-ck the police’ and get away with that sh-t if I wanted to. We held our OGs in high regard.”

Method Man also conversed about the deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. and Pac, rooting for Bronx newcomer Cardi B, the Wu’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin album, U-God’s controversial memoir, working with Redman, Donald Trump, and more.

R. Kelly Sex Cult Victim Says He Gave Her An STD

(AllHipHop News) A woman has filed a complaint against R. Kelly, alleging he infected her with a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

The unnamed woman also claims the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer tried to groom her and convince her to join his alleged “sex cult,” according to legal documents.

Her attorney Lee Merritt states that his client, who was 19 when she began dating the 51-year-old R&B star last June, ended their eight-month relationship in February.

Merritt alleges their relationship was marred by “several forms of criminal misconduct” by Kelly, including “unlawful restraint, furnishing alcohol and illegal drugs to a minor, and aggravated assault (via the referenced intentional STD infection).”

In the complaint, the singer is also accused of attempting to convince her to join the alleged “sex cult” news reports have linked him to, and that she was asked to sign a contract and divulge sensitive information about her and her family as “collateral.”

Kelly’s representative told The Washington Post that he “categorically denies all claims and allegations” related to the woman’s complaint.

A report detailing the singer’s alleged mistreatment of women was first published by BuzzFeed last July when the families of two women and several former associates accused him of brainwashing young women into a “cult” servicing his sexual desires. The article included an interview with Timothy and Joycelyn Savage, who said their daughter Jocelyn had been brainwashed and was being held at one of Kelly’s properties – an allegation Jocelyn denied.

According to the Daily News, the new accuser has contacted the Savages on social media, with the family praising her “bravery” in coming forward with her complaint against Kelly.

In a recent BBC documentary, the singer’s former girlfriend Kitti Jones alleged Kelly had “trained” a 14-year-old girl to become his sexual plaything.

Kanye West Returns To Twitter To Talk About Lamar Odom, Consciousness & More

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West has had some classic moments on Twitter like his multi-tweet rant against Wiz Khalifa and publicly asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for $1 billion. The outspoken Hip Hop artist took a break from the social media platform, but he made a return overnight.

Ye shared his thoughts on his former brother-in-law Lamar Odom, consciousness, capitalism, neck tattoos, and footwear. Check out the G.O.O.D. Music leader’s latest tweets below.

my favorite moment of walking into MSG to play Saint Pablo, I used to go to the hospital and play Lamar the album when he was learning to walk and talk again Then we walked into the arena together

Some people have to work within the existing consciousness while some people can shift the consciousness

often people working with the existing consciousness are jealous of those who are more in touch and they become hard-core capitalist in hopes of creating the illusion that the value of money is worth more than the value of time and friends
