Let The Good Times Roll: Uplifting Conversations About Marijuana (Part II)

In Part Two of this piece, (check out Part One here)  Devin the Dude talks about how marijuana helped him record his contribution to ‘2001’ and an executive at merryjane.com explains how the site aspires to be an integral part of weed’s continued integration into society and why that’s so important.

Devin the Dude is a rapper from Texas with an affinity for women and weed that earned much critical acclaim and a strong underground following as a member of the Odd Squad and with his solo debut in the 90’s.  His commercial break though came in 1999 when he appeared on Dr. Dre’s 2001.  With eight solo albums to his name as of 2016 and numerous high-profile collaborations, Devin is one of the game’s most respected emcees.  My interview with him took place on 10/25/2016.

AllHipHop: Can you think of a particular song where marijuana really enhanced the writing or recording process?

Devin the Dude: {Laughs} I can’t even think of a studio session where I didn’t smoke, but [there was] one in particular when I went out there to do 2001 with Dre and Snoop.  Initially, Dre had just wanted me to do a hook on a certain song.  I had some cigars so I rolled one up and I tried to give him the sack back.  He was like “No, no, no. that’s all you.”  Then I was like, “Oh, s··t.”  Back then a big a·· chronic sack like that was four or five hundred bucks. So I was like, “Oh s··t, thank you.”

Then he was like, “I got a list of songs here on this piece of paper and I got a DAT player and we’re going to start thumbing through some songs.  Like skeletons of songs.”  He hands me the paper and there are 107 numbers on it.  We kept going through [them] and I was high as f··k.  Around number 12, I was like, “I remember that beat.”  Hitman saw me grooving to it.  We kept going and I was said, “Go back to 12.”  [He mimics the sound of the “F··k You” beat.]ftkpbcbs04ikwx3y8m0h

Then after listening to the song for about 20 minutes, I just remembered a slow song, it was like a break up song to a woman you were cheating with.  I only had the hook and never did write the verse to it.

As I was writing stuff down to see if it matched (from that slow song), it sounded like Alvin and the chipmunks. I didn’t know if this was going to go.  Then he [Dre] was like, “Want to try one?”  I was like, “Yeah, we can try it.”  Man, that was the slowest walk [to the booth] and I was high as f··k too.  But weed was kind of like, “You can do it”.  This is where the weed kicked in.  I got in there, put the headphones on, and the first verse was kind of shaky because I had to get the speed of it right.  I was used to singing it so slow.  And then it took me three or four takes to nail that first one, I was like cool, “Let’s double that.”  Then we did a third.  Boom!  Then  we did a fourth.  I started feeling good.  Before I left, I was like, “Hold up, let me do one more track.”  And I just did like a real crazy “I just wanna f··k you” like a Bing Crosby one.

Then I walked back in the studio, and they were like this is cool.  I sat down started smoking again.  Mel-Man was writing for Dre, so he was helping him with his verse so as they were writing, I was so f··kin’ high, I just started writing too. He saw me over there and he was like, “You got a verse?” I was like, “S··t, hell yeah.”  I just felt that good.  Dre was like, “Cool.  Let’s listen to what you got.”  And I went in there and knocked the verse out real quick, man.

So the hook took you a minute, but the verse you were able to knock out quick?

Devin the Dude: You’re right and the weed helped with both. It triggered me to help me remember the chorus and to make it fit.  Then I got to relaxing and writing and got on the verse that I wasn’t really supposed to do.

You once said, “all races, people of all kinds of economic statuses, [people with] different religions.  Weed is the bridge between all that.”  That’s a great sentiment.  Could you please elaborate?

Devin the Dude: People you’ve never met before in your life, you might not even have to speak the same language.  I met someone and we didn’t even communicate vocally, but when it came to weed, we just became friends after smoking a joint and we weren’t really able to talk to each other.

Smoking weed by yourself is cool, but there’s something about the connection between two people smoking.  No matter whom the two people are.  It doesn’t matter what color, creed, or religion.  Two strangers can meet and find out they smoke and smoke a joint together.

[Regarding] the presidential thing, that’s one thing I want to add.  It would be wonderful if one of these [candidates] would stop ignoring the cannabis culture and acknowledge that weed should be legal.  Laws should be changed on the federal level, instead of having each state try to make their own rules.

Noah Rubin is the Editor-In-Chief at MERRY JANE, which began a little over a year ago and prides itself as being “the fastest growing media platform at the crossroads of pop culture, business, politics, health, and the new generation of sophisticated cannabis culture for all.”  In addition to his work there, Noah also has experience in television having produced content for Adult Swim, MTV, and VH1.  He is the former VP of Music at Decon Records (now Mass Appeal Records) and even did production work on two projects for the Wu-Tang Clan.  My interview with him took place on 10/25/2016.

How did you first get involved with MERRY JANE?

Noah: I think there were a variety of things that made me take note.  I  think having media and music coming together and  then adding this other element of cannabis, it felt like a new chapter.  It was really kind of reflective of a more futuristic paradigm where cannabis was combining with culture and the power of media was the perfect storm.  And obviously looking at the other people who are involved in the company, I felt that it was positioned well to have a big impact.

What do you think has been the site’s greatest achievement thus far?

Noah: We’re trying to be the future of the conversation that involves cannabis.  Like right now, we have this kind of dividing line where you have cannabis media outlets and media outlets.  And I want us to be something where it can be seamlessly both and you can be up on really compelling stories around music, really compelling stories around fashion, and really compelling stories around technology, really compelling stories around headline news, and really compelling stories around cannabis and not feel like you’ve skipped a beat. We want it to be where it all feels part of a singular whole in an organic and intelligent way.  MERRY JANE is about “Hey, there actually isn’t a dividing line here.  Our culture is cannabis culture and vice versa.  It’s no big deal.”  This is about being passionate and intelligent about the world we live in.

From personal experience, I can say that I think your site is succeeding in that respect.  Prior to preparing for this interview, someone very close to me was diagnosed with cancer and they began exploring medicinal marijuana to help with their condition.  As I began to explore the topic of marijuana as a whole, MERRY JANE was one the first sites that came up and I’ve been a frequent site visitor ever since.

Noah: First and foremost, I’m sorry to hear you’re going through that.

Thank you.

Noah: I do think having cannabis as part of that conversation [cancer] is a real positive thing.  I think there was a time and a place when someone was suffering in illness, they’d be persecuted for or locked up even for trying to alleviate symptoms of either the disease itself or the treatment.   The time has come and there is no dividing line.  This plant is part of our culture.  Breaking down that wall is a priority to me and I appreciate that you are  seeing that and feeling that MERRY JANE can help people do it.

[Marijuana] is cultural.  It’s medical.  It’s legal,  It’s personal.  It’s historical.  There are a lot of things all coming together.  It’s an exciting time for sure and I’m looking forward to seeing how prop 64 question plays out on the ballot in November.  I’m also looking forward to the benefits it may have in the state of California and the country as a whole.  Truthfully, until cannabis is legal on a federal level, we’re not really going to see the change that we’re looking for.

In addition to the interviewees, thanks to everyone else who also made this possible: Brianne, Adam, Shaun, Peggy, Sos, and N.O. Joe.

French Montana Denies Animal Cruelty Allegations Over Birthday Elephant Pictures

(AllHipHop News) Rapper French Montana has defended himself against allegations of animal cruelty after hiring an elephant for his birthday.

The “Pop That” hitmaker and his girlfriend Iggy Azalea came under fire earlier this week, after they shared snaps of themselves online, posing beside a bejeweled elephant, which had been placed in the backyard of Montana’s Los Angeles mansion.

Alongside one image of the beast, which had jewelry placed on its head and around its ankles, he wrote, “I love animals more than people!! Happy bday to me positive vibes at the Casa (home).”

The posts prompted many Instagram followers to attack the couple for engaging in what they felt was a form of animal cruelty, but Montana has now hit back, claiming the elephant in question leads a privileged life.

He simply tells TMZ.com, “The elephant’s living better than a lot of people!”

Fellow rapper Iggy has yet to comment on the controversy.

The couple’s elephant encounter took place hours before Iggy surprised her man with a yacht party for his 32nd birthday.

She flew him by helicopter to California’s Marina Del Rey, where guests including Drake, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, the rap mogul’s girlfriend Cassie, and model Amber Rose were waiting on a luxury boat to celebrate Montana’s special day.

The extravagant event also featured a fireworks display, which lit up the night sky.

Iggy and French have been romantically linked since the summer (16), following the Australian star’s split from her fiance, Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Nick Young.

Comedian Recalls The Time Rev Run Checked Jay Z!

While Corey Holcomb certainly has NO chill, it was comedian Freez Luz that took the cake with this recent show.

Freez recalls a time when he witnessed a small confrontation between Rev Run and Jay Z.

He says he was doing a show in Fayetteville, NC. Tha Alkaholiks, Akinyele, Jay Z, and Run DMC were all on a show together.

Before the show they had to do a few promo runs, and one of the stops was a record store where they signed autographs to promote the show.

Freez says they were all in the record store and Rev Run was like where is Jay Z. Apparently Dame Dash told Run that Jay was going to sit this one out.

Freez said Run went to the van and went off on Jay Z! According to Freez, Run said,

“Yo get the f-ck out of this van and get in here and sign these f-cking autographs. You see Run DMC signing autographs…get the f-ck out this van and sign autographs.”

Freez Luv said Jay Z definitely got out the van and signed those autographs. LOL. Run didn’t care. He felt like everyone was there to sell the show and sign the autographs. If Run DMC was going to sign some autographs, so was Jay!

Holcomb says Rev Run can hustle that Rev sh-t all he wants, but he knows who he really is. He still isn’t here for Rev Run! LOL.

A Better Way To Promote & Sell Your Music; The “Listen, Buy, & Sell” Movement Has Begun!

4Fame founder Kevin Linney has just launched a new peer-to-peer community based music sales program, which allows artists and fans the opportunity to sell music together. Now, artists can employ their most loyal and supportive fans by having them help promote and sell their music for a portion of the profit. The peer-to-peer business model has been successful for companies such as Uber and Airbnb – and 4fame.com is now applying it to the music world. This new method will revolutionize the way artists connect and collaborate with fans.

With physical album sales diminishing and streaming services taking over, it’s believed music will no longer sell like it once did. However, this is false. If music is no longer profitable, then why are companies like iTunes and Spotify still profiting, while the artists only makes a percentage of a dollar for their hard work. Kevin Linney – founder and CEO of 4fame.com – developed 4fame to combat the new trend of artists giving away all their music for free.

I believe that anytime a music artists gives away his/her music for free, it devalues the music. Music artists are contributing to a culture of consumers that expect to get free music. This trend needs to stop. So, I created a new peer-to-peer selling model, which will financially reward fans for helping to sell the music of their favorite artists.

The old models of selling music are no longer viable. This new concept is about artists and fans building together. Kevin also shared the importance of believing your music can sell;

Artists need to believe in their talent and understand that their passion and creativity can sell if they tap into a supportive fan base. Music isn’t about likes, views, and followers. It’s about connecting with truly supportive fans that want to help build music careers.

Both artists and fans can join the 4fame movement (for free), giving each side of the industry an opportunity to help music flourish once again.

Is It Beyonce That Kanye West Is Really Upset With?

(AllHipHop Rumors) While Kanye West has recently blasted Jay Z for his alleged less than brotherly behavior, it seems that Ye may actually be even more upset at his “sis” Beyonce!

Remember, last month Kanye revealed that he was upset with Jay Z for not showing enough concern about his family after Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris. Although Jay called, Kanye felt he should’ve and could’ve come over to console them.

Now rumor has it that Kanye is actually even more upset with Beyonce as he’s “caped” for her for so many years with no support from her.

I mean after all Kanye walked on stage to diss Taylor Swift in front of the whole world only to take up for Beyonce.

According to OKMagazine, Beyonce can’t deal with Kim Kardashian, so both couples’ relationship with each other has suffered.

Beyonce doesn’t like Kim, and her failing to accept who Kanye has chosen to be his wife is causing major issues. A source told OK,

“Kanye’s spent years gushing about her, but she doesn’t like Kim, and it causes big problems.”

I mean who can forget the fact that Jay and Bey skipped KimYe’s wedding!

Allegedly Kanye never heard from Beyonce after Kim’s robbery, and that was just too big of a blow for him to experience.

If this is true, we could actually see how and why he would take it personal. Then again, Kim and Ye are always with the sh-ts, so that is a lot for anyone to deal with. LOL.

Do you think Beyonce really hates Kim K?

Gucci Mane Says Staying Sober Is Making Him Better Than Other Rappers

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Gucci Mane prides himself on his sobriety because few celebrities can enjoy fame without drinking or doing drugs.

The Hip-Hop star, real name Radric Davis, had been struggling with heavy drug use in 2014, when he was imprisoned for weapons and assault charges, and he previously credited the prison stint with forcing him to get clean – although he confessed the withdrawal felt like “death”.

Gucci Mane, who walked free in May, admits his time behind bars changed his life in other ways too, and he emerged a better man.

“It changed me, ’cause it just gave me a time to sit back, evaluate my life and look at all the mistakes, all the things I know that I did wrong and I need to correct,” he explained during an appearance on ESPN sports show His & Hers.

“And to ensure that I don’t come back into this prison I’m just gonna be totally sober… I want to jump every hurdle that’s in front of me, and it takes me having a clear mind. I know my weakness, and being sober is just, like, a big strength to me.”

The 36-year-old admits he loves to tell others he is teetotal, and it’s the ability to boast about it which keeps him from falling off the wagon.

Asked how he maintains his sobriety while living “the entertainment lifestyle”, he replied, “It’s easy to me. Like you say, I live an extravagant lifestyle. And to me, it’s kind of even being more cocky. I love to tell someone, ‘Hey listen, I don’t do drugs. I’m sorry baby, but I don’t want anything to drink, I’ll take a water.’ I take pride in it. I like the responses. It surprises people, and it kind of throws them off. But you know, I don’t want to be predictable. I don’t want to do what everybody else does. I’m doing this for me.”

Remy Ma Goes In On Fan Over Big Pun

(AllHipHop Rumors) One person not to play with is Remy Ma!

Remy recently clapped back at a fan who brought up Big Pun’s past history with domestic violence on a post that was celebrating his birthday.

Although fans usually look forward to celebrity clapbacks as they are usually funny, witty, well deserved, and entertaining, fans were none too pleased with the way Remy Ma handled this one.

Given the fact that Pun did in fact pistol whip his wife, Remy may have wanted to sit this one out.

Fans felt like Remy was defending a woman beater and displaying her own violent nature (as she went to jail on assault charges after shooting a friend during an altercation).

Rumor has it that Pun’s kids have been vocal about not missing him because living with him was chaotic and violent to say the least.

The fan wrote,

“He pistol whipped his wife.. I’m not so sure she’s missing him right now.”

Remy replied by saying,

“Always gotta be one dumb ass stupid ass ignorant ass b-tch to say something negative, I’m sure you’re nobody’s wife & you obviously never got pistol whipped cuz you run ya f-ckin mouth to much… now get ya hating Harriet ass off my brother page- HAPPY BIRTHDAY PUN.”

Other fans commented saying that people shouldn’t get offended about the truth. Most just wanted to know how could one make light of the situation, and what was Remy actually try to say with,

“You obviously never got pistol whipped cuz you run your mouth too much.”

Editor’s note: Pun’s wife/widow did celebrate his life and birthday and actually holds him down extremely hard in life and social media.

Has T.I. Really Been In Lil Wayne’s Corner Lately?

(AllHipHop Rumors) As T.I. recently called out his longtime friend Lil’ Wayne publicly over his Black Lives Matter comments, fans have started to wonder has T.I. truly been in Wayne’s corner lately anyway.

If you need to get a point across to a close friend or family member, most would argue that you should contact that person offline, but perhaps T.I. felt the issue was so big that the only way to get through to Lil’ Wayne was to blast him publicly for his socially irresponsible comments.

The question on many fan’s minds is: have Lil’ Wayne and T.I. been distant friends or frenemies for a while?

Eyebrows were raised when T.I. sported a “Free Roscoe” hat in support of the man charged with shooting at Lil’ Wayne’s tour bus. T.I. maintains that he knows for a fact that Roscoe is innocent. Hmmmmm does this mean that he may know who really did in fact shoot at the bus then?

Fans also wondered how is Wayne and Tip’s relationship holding up as T.I. has always rocked with Young Thug and his wave also. We all know how disrespectful Thugger once was towards Wayne.

Hmmmmm have Tip and Wayne spoken since Tip’s post? Are they really friends right now?

The new single “One Eye On The Door” was produced by Diztortion and premiered on the Radio 1 breakfast show.

It sees a return to candid lyrical form for Green, recounting the tragicomic events that occur during a relationship and the excuses and recriminations that follow.

“I thought the only way to depict a convincing party in the video, was to have a party. So I invited my mates along to the shoot. Luckily the camera men didn’t drink as much as we did,” Professor Green explained to AllHipHop.com.

“One Eye On The Door” is the tenth Professor Green music video directed by long term collaborator, Henry Schofield, who also directed “Upper Clapton Dance,” “Jungle” and “Read All About It.”

Fans Roast Drake’s Latest Body Addition

(AllHipHop Rumors) It’s always good to sit and think out a tattoo before putting it on your body, but with all of the terrible tattoos we’ve seen over the years, it’s clear that a lot of folks don’t.

Now if you are a man, you don’t really want to be proudly sporting a baby tattoo of any sort, and this is what recently got Drake roasted on the internet.

Drake decided to get this baby skull tattoo with the word “unruly” underneath. Because Drake put this rather small tattoo on his arm, and the fact that it’s not surrounded by any other tattoo artwork had fans giving him the side eye.

I mean is he going to get a tramp stamp next? Check out what fans had to say below.

DJ Premier and DJ Prince Paul Link At Sonos Store and Talk Aging, Production Gear and Lil Uzi Controversy

DJ Premier and Prince Paul are two of the most influential DJs and producers in hip-hop history.

The legends recently sat down at Sonos’ flagship store in New York City to talk staying dope while aging, the gear they’re currently using, stylistic changes in Hip-Hop throughout the years, how Premier was too afraid to dress like Prince and Prince Paul and Ladybug Mecca’s fantastic new Brazilian/Hip-Hop project Brookzill.

DJ Premier also addressed the controversy with rapper Lil Uzi in depth:

“There was a little controversy with Lil Uzi Vert from Philly… and everybody was like, ‘Yo, man, he needs to be smacked, he needs to be this and that’ — they were saying because he wouldn’t freestyle to “Mass Appeal” when Nero put the beat on for him. First of all, Mass Appeal’s not really a beat you throw on to freestyle to.

Back when ‘Come Clean’ was out a lot of people were like, ‘Yo throw on the ‘Come Clean’ beat!’ There’s just certain records that you put on to spit to if you’re gonna put someone live on the radio. ‘Mass Appeal”s not one I would choose, either, that’s just a dope record that we did. Out of our Gang Starr catalog that was one of our biggest hits, but that doesn’t mean that that’s what you rhyme to.

He said, ‘I don’t wanna rhyme to that.’ Then everybody was saying it was disrespectful.

One day someone said something on Twitter and added him on Twitter and I jumped in and said, ‘Hey he doesn’t have to rap to anything I do. He can make whatever decision he wants. If he don’t like it that’s fine with me, I’m not upset about that.’ He responded and goes, ‘Hey OG, I don’t know why everybody’s taking this out of context.’

He said if it’d been ‘Full Clip’ instrumental he would have rapped to it. And I was like, ‘Wow.’”
