Jay-Z Said To Be Eyeing L.A. Dodger Yasiel Puig For Roc Nation Sports

(AllHipHop News) Rapper/label head/sports agent Jay-Z has completely dominated the headlines this week. The Brooklyn-born businessman released his 12th studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail that’s heading for the number one spot on the charts, received a platinum plaque for the LP already, launched a new ad campaign with Budweiser, and commandeered Twitter for a day. It appears that Jay wants to continue his takeover of the entertainment world by adding another budding superstar to his Roc Nation Sports roster.

Yahoo Sports is reporting that Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig is considering joining Kevin Durant, Robinson CanoSkylar Diggins, and Geno Smith at the Roc. Puig got Jay-Z’s contact information from one of his teammates, and after meeting with Roc Nation reps last month he was said to be “intrigued” by the multi-layered deal presented.

Puig has captivated baseball fans this year after making his major league debut on June 3. Since being called up, the Cuban defector has hit .394 with 8 home runs and 19 RBI’s in 35 games. He has become a regular on SportsCenter’s “Top Ten” plays countdown with his timely homers and amazing defensive feats.

If Puig does sign with Roc Nation his current agent Jaime Torres would still be entitled to the full commission on the $42 million deal he signed in 2012.

Jay-Z spoke about why he chose to venture into the sports agent field during a recent interview with Power 105.1 suggesting that the some of the old regime may not have their clients’ best interest at heart.

“I do this because it’s an extension of the bigger goal. The bigger goal is for all [athletes] to get their just due. Not get half-ass agents or people who rob them,” said Jay. “We’re talking guys who are signing for $90 million dollars are broke in four years. That’s terrible money management, because [other agents] don’t care… [Roc Nation Sports is] almost a better money management firm and then agents.”

Jay-Z Records "Picasso Baby" Video In 6 Hours With A Host Of Artsy Fans

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Jay Electronica Getting Set To Marry?

Man. The Detox album will be out before Jay-E. But, you know why? It probably works out for the best now that he’s down with Kate Rothschild. Not that that’s the only reason, but that brother is now wealthy beyond our dreams if this rumor is true. He’s all cleared to get married to the wealthy rumored-to-be-real illuminati chick. I’m hearing he may be ready to jump the…broom. That’s right. If he gets into this, he’s going to be on a whole new level of the game…honestly, Jay-Z would want to be on this level (I think)!

This dude disses Jay-E though, but basically confirms the rumors.

Can Jay-E really be Illuminati? He’s denied it in the past.

Guerilla Black Pleads Guilty To Credit Card Fraud Scheme

(AllHipHop News) Guerilla Black (Charles Williamson) has pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy, unauthorized access to a protected computer to facilitate fraud, access device fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft charges on Tuesday (July 9).

Prosecutors alleged the Compton rapper got access to over 27,000 stolen credit card numbers with around 1000 of those numbers providing $150,000 in stolen funds. The total amount of financial loss has not been calculated.

According to the government, Williamson bought the numbers from computers hackers who managed to lift the card information from a restaurant and restaurant supply store in the Seattle area.

Authorities say that Black presented fake credit cards during the time he was awaiting trial. He was then re-arrested and held in custody.

The 33-year-old now faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the conspiracy and computer fraud charges, up to 15 years and $250,000 fine for the device fraud charge, up to 30 years and $1 million fine for the bank fraud charge, and a minimum 2 year sentence for the identity theft charge.

Two co-conspirators have already been sentenced for the plot. 22 -year-old Dutch hacker David Schrooten got a 12 year sentence earlier this year, and Christopher Schroebel, 21, was sentenced to 7 years in 2012.

Guerilla Black is best known for his voice that resembles The Notorious B.I.G. and his song “Compton” off 2004’s Guerilla City album.

Black is scheduled to be sentenced on October 10th.

channel ORANGE-One Year Later

When channel ORANGE dropped a year ago today, it was one of the most anticipated albums of the year. The idea of a young black man embraced by hip-hop music and culture singing about being in love with another man was polarizing. Frank Ocean’s sexuality was as much a driving force behind the success of the album as the music.

The album was perfect for the mid-summer weather made for riding with the top down. Debuting at number 2 with 131,000 in copies sold, the album was well-received by audiences despite limited radio airplay. The early release to iTunes prompted Target to decline in stocking it, to backlash that it was due to Frank’s sexuality, a charge which the company vehemently denied. But, that was the energy that swirled around channel ORANGE: controversy. There still remain people who have never heard the album because they can’t get past the fact that there is one song that is about being in love with a man.

Frank-Ocean-Channel-OrangeThe controversial nature of the release almost ruined the excitement of the music. channel ORANGE was like nothing we had ever heard before. The melodies were unique and spacey, almost sleepy in their delivery. The album features hazy electronic effects, muted drums, synthesizers, vamps and hard-shifting song transitions making for a pop-soul sound that is reminiscent of some of the greats. Also featuring sound effects like white noise, waves, and dialogue the album seems to reflect Frank’s artistic mind. The themes of longing and unrequited love (Pink Matter, Forest Gump) permeate the album and were reinforced by the note that Frank wrote on his Tumblr about an unrequited love affair with a man. The themes of decadent spending, excess, and religion (Sweet Life, Super Rich Kids, Bad Religion) were topics that he had sung about in his work with Watch the Throne.

As for this writer, channel ORANGE was a revelation. It was sold out all over Atlanta and it was over a week after the album was released before I could purchase it. My craving for the music could only be fulfilled by Spotify. But, once I had it, I was head over heels in love with it. “Sweet Life” became the anthem for my existence and “White” was an instrumental that would make a great ringtone. Then there was “Forrest Gump.” When asked about the song and if it bothers me to hear a man profess his love for another man, my immediate answer is no. Truly, I really don’t care what people do in their intimate time. But, who Frank is singing to doesn’t even occur to me when I hear it, what I hear is loving someone who doesn’t love you. And that, is something I am familiar with.

The album was and should be considered a revolutionary and exciting debut. From its amazing themes to its phenomenal understated production. channel ORANGE has earned the status of a classic and incomparable debut. Wonder what Frank has for us next?

The Definitive Guide to Jay-Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ Album Credits

Originally Published on MySpace • July 08, 2013

“Industry is shady, needs to be taken over,” Jay-Z rapped back on “Izzo (H.O.V.A.).” And over a decade later, he’s hardly satisfied with record business’ current state of affairs. That probably includes some of the changes he’s helped enact over the course of his storied career, during which he’s created a catalog of music that will go down as some of the most important songs and albums in hip-hop history. His accomplishments run long: he built an empire under the Roc-A-Fella name, opened a chain of 40/40 nightclubs, written a book (Decoded), bought a stake in the New Jersey Nets and helped bring them to Brooklyn (then sold said shares so Roc Nation Sports could rep NBA, scoring god Kevin Durant). And there’s so much more.

We ain’t gotta tell you: he’s a business, man. Just take a look at his latest venture. To release his 12th album Magna Carta Holy Grail, Jay partnered with Samsung to deliver an album for free via an app designed for the company’s mobile phones, forcing the RIAA’s hand to change the rules about going platinum before an LP even hits stores. Hov wanted to write the new rules. All it took was a will, and the way quickly materialized.

Magna Carta Holy Grail is, by all intents and purposes, more of a new Jay-Z business venture than it is a new Jay-Z album. No one knew it was coming and, once we did, all the chatter—whether from Jigga, his camp or the blogosphere—surrounding the rollout focused almost entirely on this nebulous idea of #newrules. Partially redacted lyric sheets, big name collaborators and approved samples of alterna-rock anthems were revealed, but nary a note was heard, save for the tunes we watched on a Yeezus’d out Rick Rubin nod (off) through a singular promo video.

But multi-bazillion dollar priorities aside, it’s not as if Sean Carter was going to totally half-ass the music side of things. For #MCHG, as it’s known in the tweets, Jay did what Jay’s always been wont to do, rounding up a cavalcade of close associates, some of the biggest names in music and a few hotshot up-and-comers (including one 16-year-old producer who’s still in high school) to help him create something that sounds worthy of a couple bazillions. To properly honor MCHG, we compiled an exhaustive rundown of the brands— we mean, people—who helped Jay-Z make his latest work of art.

THE STAR

Jay-Z

Allow us to re-introduce… OK, who are we kidding. Such formalities are hardly necessary at this point in Jay-Z’s career. Brooklyn kid from the Marcy Projects becomes arguably the biggest rapper to walk the face of the Earth, amassing a mountain of paradigm-shifting records, monster hits and all-time classics that he continues to build on 17 years into his career. Like seriously, what’s there to say when we could just point you back to “Big Pimpin” or “Hard Knock Life” or “Empire State of Mind” or “Encore” or “99 Problems” or “Can I Get A…” or etc., etc., etc. Kanye may be Yeezus now, but we’ve been bowing down to Jay Hova for years.

THE PERSONNEL

Todd Pendelton, Samsung Chief Marketing Officer

A Northeastern University grad and marketing whiz, Todd Pendleton spent about 15 years working for Nike, earning the position of Global Brand Communications Director before jumping to Samsung in 2011 to take on the position of Chief Marketing Officer.

Jay Brown, Roc Nation Co-Founder/President

Current president of Roc Nation, which he helped Jay-Z launch back in 2008 after inking a massive deal with parent company Live Nation. Brown has helped build the imprint into a certified empire with branches in management, touring, publishing and, most recently, a sports agency. Brown’s career kicked off as a publisher at Quincy Jones Music Publishing/Qwest Records and he’s also the former SVP of A&R at Def Jam.

John Meneilly, Manager

Not much is known about John Meneilly, though he’s been one of Jay-Z’s most trusted managers and business advisors for years now, brokering all kinds of power moves in the upper echelon of the Roc Nation world. What we do know: Jay shouted him out in his “A Milli” remix (“And John Meneilly-onaire is my consigliore”) and that he’s tweeted just three times, twice to boast that neither Watch the Throne nor MCHG would leak. Good track record so far.

THE FEATURES

Justin Timberlake

Myspace // Official // Twitter

Contribution: Vocals, “Holy Grail,” “BBC”; Writing, “Holy Grail,” “Heaven,” “BBC,” “Jay-Z Blue”; Additional Production, “Jay-Z Blue”

After his stint as a member of the little-known boy band N Sync, Justin Timberlake (the curly-haired one) mysteriously disappeared from the face of the Earth. No one has heard from him since.

Frank Ocean
Myspace // Official

Contribution: Vocals and Writing, “Oceans”

The Grammy-winning Ocean connected with Hov and Kanye for Watch the Throne, with the R&B crooner and songwriter featured on “No Church in the Wild” and “Made in America” as both an artist and composer. The talented 25-year-old grew into one of music’s most critically acclaimed artists with his debut studio album channel ORANGE last year, and coupled with his bold open letter addressing his sexuality, he’s one of the most dynamic and adventurous musicians today. The fit was only natural—just look at the track’s name.

Beyoncé
Myspace // Official // Twitter

Contribution: Vocals, “BBC,” “Part II (On the Run)”

She’s not just Jay-Z’s little wife, and Hov ain’t about to leave his queen out of an album named after the Magna Carta. Bey has been working with Jay-Z since The Blueprint 2, memorably duetting with her future husband on “‘03 Bonnie and Clyde,” among other tracks including “Crazy in Love,” Beyoncé’s lead single off her 2003 debut solo album Dangerously in Love. But really, is there a more obvious inclusion on this record?

Nas
Myspace // Official // Twitter

Contribution: Vocals and Writing, “BBC”

Jay’s long since buried the hatchet with the man who once came up with the one-two punch of “Gay-Z” and “C###-A-Fella Records” on “Ether,” inviting Nas on stage at his 2005 “I Declare War” concert for a duet/mash-up of “Dead Presidents” and its source material, “The World Is Yours.” About a decade earlier, Hov was hoping to score a feature from Nas and his Firm co-hort AZ for “Bring It On” off his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt, though according to Dame Dash, the two kept ditching the sessions. Ill will also allegedly grew on Nas’ side over payment for “Dead Presidents”’ sampling of “The World Is Yours” refrain, “I’m out for dead presidents to represent me.” A handful of barbs at Jay-Z from Mobb Depp’s Prodigy, some accusatory freestyles, Summer Jam slams (Nas even attempted a faux lynching of Jay-Z with a dummy but got shut down) and a conclusive, unassailable Hot 97 listeners poll that declared Nas’ “Ether” the supreme diss track over Jay’s “Supa Ugly” freestyle by a margin of 58 to 42 percent and we’ve got ourselves one of the most storied hip-hop feuds of all time. The chatter died down in the early aughts, though, and in 2006, Nas inked a deal with Def Jam while Jay-Z was still president.

Rick Ross
Myspace // Official // Twitter

Contribution: Vocals and Writing, “FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt”

Jay-Z has rolled with the Maybach Music boss since adding a verse to an official remix of Ross’ breakthrough 2006 hit “Hustlin’,” and Hov soon guested on the Trilla cut “Maybach Music.” The Teflon Don also shared the crown on the God Forgives, I Don’t cut “3 Kings” with Jigga and Dr. Dre last year, and the respect is clearly mutual.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Beyonce Birth A Real Princess?

Peep what the UK Mirror is pushing!

William and Kate’s first child will be the 23rd cousin twice-removed of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby Blue Ivy, according to ancestry researchers.
Baby Cambridge’s connection to musical royalty has been found through Blue Ivy’s links to French and British royal heritage.

Family tree website findmypast.co.uk also claims to have found distant links between the first-born of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and celebrity couples such as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, whose three children will be 11th cousins with the royal baby.

Debra Chatfield, a family historian at findmypast.co.uk, said: “It’s long been said that the USA and UK have a special relationship, and that is certainly the case between Hollywood’s elite and the Royal Family.

This means that Blue Ivy is actual royalty. Uh…so, Beyonce must too? Or is that Jay? One of them, right? I dunno. Eff it. We’re all royalty. We ain’t got time for that!

REVIEW: Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail

“In America, you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential.” – Barack Obama

When my boy Mecca and I listened to “American Gangster” in the studio with Jay-Z present in 2007, Jay exuded confidence, excitement and happiness. Beyoncé passed through and oozed the same sentiments. Magna Carta Holy Grail feels eerily similar to that moment. Jay sounds fresh. He sounds free. He also sounds angry at times, as if the weight of the hate burdens him despite all of his accomplishments. But, there is a huge difference since then. Jay’s status and profile has risen like a renegade phoenix, soaring from hell to the highest levels of heaven.

Purgatory: : an intermediate state after death for expiatory purification; specifically : a place or state of punishment wherein according to Roman Catholic doctrine the souls of those who die in God’s grace may make satisfaction for past sins and so become fit for heaven.

So, is Jay-Z in purgatory? Magna Carta Holy Grail seems to make the case. Throughout, it’s evident that Jay — despite being an absolute rags to riches narrative — is still trapped between the opulence of extreme wealth and longing to be loved from those at the bottom. So, what does he do in purgatory? He camps out, builds a mansion and makes it home. It all makes for an intriguing musical excursion.

Lets start from the end with “Nickles and Dimes,” one of the most profound songs on MCHG. “Sometimes I feel survivors guilt / I gave some money to this guy / he got high as hell,” Jay opens up. “Now, I’m part of the problem far as I can tell / Did I do it for him or do it for myself?” The rest of the song, he explains that he’s not giving money anymore, but something far greater – opportunity. He even takes time to respond to legendary actor/singer/activist Harry Belafonte, who criticized Jay and Beyonce for “lacking social responsibility.” “I’m just trying to find common ground, but Mr. Belafonte try to chop a n**a down/ Mr. Da-Oh / Major fail,” Jay spews. Naturally, Jay is conflicted as he rhymes about giving opportunity and that “you don’t know the sht I do for the homies.” It would have been nice to see Jay honor the 85-year-old Belafonte rather than feed into divide and conquer. Oh, the conflict.

“Fuckwithmeyouknowigotit” featuring Rick Ross is a welcome delight on Magna Carta. Ruefully ignorant yet magnificently simplistic. Jay and Ross trade bars about bad b**hes and beaches over a booming baseline. Destined to be a hood anthem. The intro in curious where it says, “A little over a year ago I was in bondage. Now, I’m back out here reaping the blessing and getting the benefits that go along with it…everything that’s out here for kings. The reason that we like this – this this jewelry and these diamonds – they don’t understand the sht – is we really from Africa. So don’t look down on the youngsters because they want shiny things. its in our genes.”

“Ni*s want my old st, buy my old album,” Jay once proclaimed. Magna Carta is largely an experimental album where the Brooklyn native attempts deft feats of creativity – some that work and others that don’t. “Somewhereinamerica” knocks with a heavy piano with a repetitive horn. Jay rhymes about being an insider still rejected, despite the wealth. “New money, they looking down on me / Blue Bloods (royalty), they try to clown on me / you can turn up your nose high society / never gon’ turn down the homey.” Another delightfully dense record is “Crown,” where he proclaim himself to be a god. But, the song is truly a reaction the ubiquitous hater where he says, “These n***as try to s**t on me..they try to write me outta their history.” This reviewer wanted to like “Oceans” with Frank Ocean, but it settles rather listlessly.

Beyoncé sounds quite heavenly on “Part II (On The Run),” where the pair make a case for a duet album. Its these times when Jay sounds the most sincere – when he gets personal. While “Jay-Z Blue” feels awkward with Biggie and Mommie Dearest” samples, you can feel the earnest conflict in the 43-year-old as he toils over repeating the cycle his father set for him. “Piscasso Baby” has Jay examining his art fetish, but also begs the question “when is enough enough?” “Ahhh, f**k it, I want a trillion!” he yelps! Raekwon would have been perfect for “Heaven,” which feels like a RZA beat, but the religious subject matter is too weighty for a first encounter between the two titans. Jay quickly sublimes to death some “sucka n***a” on “Versus” and flaunts the fruits of labor on “Beach Is Better.”

Jay discusses “Heaven” and “Jay-Z Blue”

Lets finish with the album intro, “Holy Grail,” a duet song with Justin Timberlake, where the theme continues. Jay chastises the papz – “Can’t even take my daughter for a walk / see them by the corner store” – but, ultimately admits to loving the glory associated with fame and wealth. The self-proclaimed “illest n***a alive” – that’s Jay-Z in all his hues, contrasts and conflicting sentiments.

“Just let me be great. Let me be great!,” Jay shouts on”F.U.T.W.” “I feel like mother f**kin’ Cassius Clay right now.” But, Jay knows like Ali before him. Greatness is seized and not given. With MCHG, he’s extended his greatness well into the future, well beyond his peers, but probably not past his own ambitions. But, will he make it out of purgatory? The truth is, some listeners will hate this record and others will love it. One thing is clear – all will have a need to adjust their musical pallet to fully comprehend Jay-Z’s new truth.

Furthermore, we’ll have to take a moment and see through Jay-Z’s lens to fully appreciate it, as Jay will need to examine Harry Belafonte to understand his critique of the rap mogul. And therein lies the plight of Mr. Carter, smack dab in the middle of the haves and have-nots. On Magna Carta, he reminds us that he “parties with weirdoes” but also has numerous references to his drug dealing days decades ago. Just a reminder: He’s in a different space, still of the people.

All in all, Magna Carta is another victory for Brooklyn’s royal son. The biggest question might be, how will Shawn Carter top the event known now as Magna Carta Holy Grail?
