Detroit’s Daughter: Remembering “8 Mile” Ten Years Later

Ten years ago today, on November 8, 2002, Eminem fans around the country flocked to theaters, eventually making the rapper’s biopic, 8 Mile, the number one film in America. The R-rated drama, which also starred Kim Basinger, Mekhi Phifer, Brittney Murphy, and Taryn Manning – with a cameo from rapper Xzibit – went on to gross over $200 million worldwide. Even the soundtrack was a best-seller, and it cemented Eminem as the first rapper to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself”.

But the story, which was set in “The D” in 1995, began years earlier.

The Detroit of my childhood was almost 90 percent Black, and the other 10 percent wasn’t necessarily White. It was Mexican, Chaldean, and then Caucasian. The result of “White Flight” in the ’70s, the city’s racial makeup meant that growing up there, you could live entire days and not see a White person. Your classmates, your teachers and principal, your police officers, your Mayor… all looked like you. Unless, of course, you traveled north of the now iconic 8 Mile Road.

The story of Eminem’s initial ostracism from Detroit Hip-Hop is a story too often told. Eventually, Eminem was accepted by most of the close-knit community. And, he kept his promises – coming back for D12 and Obie Trice.

Em’s success was rubbing off on numerous artists who were benefiting from the national attention the city brought by his constant name-dropping. By the time word began to get out that “Marshall” was making a movie, the city was more than behind him. We were all excited and ready for our close up.

The flyers went up first, advertising that Universal Pictures was casting for “The Untitled Detroit Project.” But the location of the flyers, St. Andrews Hall and other Hip-Hop clubs in “The D,” made it pretty obvious. This was it. Marshall was making a movie…about us. The lines at the casting calls were like reunions, as the same people that you saw at all the same shows, open mics, and other events showed up.

We laughed as we filled out our forms listing our ages, height, weight, and type of car. My 1995 Mercury Tracer, affectionately known as the Purple Pill, was cast. And so was I. I had a callback for a speaking part, “Future? Why do they call you Future?” I remember the line exactly. I was asked if I would have a problem sitting on someone’s lap, and told that it was possible that my breast might pop out. And, while I was more than amenable to both, I didn’t get that part.

Instead, I, like 400 others, was cast in a starring role as a member of the crowd during the battle scenes. The filming was brutal. The movie was shot in winter. The set, a replica of St. Andrews Hall basement venue known as The Shelter, was cold almost the entire time. For over five days, we would be a part of history, witnesses to a private Eminem concert. What most people don’t know about those magical scenes is that we, that crowd, were not new to rap battles. Most of us knew each other from the Detroit Hip-Hop community. The casting was deliberate. We were expert audience members – Detroiters who weren’t easily impressed by superstardom but inspired by great lyrics.

So, when, before the final scene on the fourth day, director Curtis Hanson came out to thank us for our work. For enduring the hard, 14-hour days, for braving the cold and uncomfortable set. Most of us, like Em and Mekhi, had practically lost our voices. He told us that he was proud of us, that we looked, on film, in a word…beautiful.

Then, he told us to get set for the filming of the final battle. By the time it happened. B-Rabbit vs. Poppa Doc, our excitement was real. This battle felt real. We had seen it progress. We were ready to see the climax. Shouting “What? What?” with no cue. Curtis Hanson told the camera operators to ready for rehearsal, the first run through of the scene. Yet, this time, he decided to record it.

“Now everybody from the 3-1-3, put your motherf*cking hands up and follow me!” Eminem unexpectedly shouted at the crowd.

And like we would, cameras on or not, we put our f*cking hands up.

The crowd shot of that entire room hands high, and most of the final battle scene, is our unscripted rehearsal. It was our natural reaction to Eminem’s lyrics and how they made us feel. It was the climax and reality that we were filming a major motion picture about the two very things most of us loved most – Hip-Hop and Detroit. And 10 years later, it still speeds up my heart and brings a tear to my eye.

This is my Detroit.

Not the city that the media has taught the world to fear listed as one of the most dangerous cities in America. Not the city that has a Black youth unemployment rate of near 50 percent. But, the city so connected to its musical history and heritage that we changed the face of the industry – twice. And  we will, undoubtedly, do it again.

I don’t live in my hometown. I moved just over three years ago for a better job and better writing opportunities. But Detroit will always be my home. I’m a Coney dog-eating, “What Up Doe”-speaking, hustler from 6 Mile, and I always will be.

Ten years after the release of 8 Mile, a movie which showed Detroit’s truth to the world, it’s still us vs. them. Detroit vs. “The Free World.”

And I still will now, like I did then, bet on “The D”… for the win.

EXCLUSIVE: Max B Co-Signs French Montana and Ponders Diddy’s NYC Domination

(AllHipHop News) In part two of AllHipHop.com’s exclusive interview with Max B, the Harlem rapper discussed what happened when his deal with Jim Jones went sour and he was “blackballed” from radio airwaves. During that time, and with his trial pending, he says he began working with French Montana was a way to build a wave of music that would last.

“I was completely blackballed, my songs on the radio. I couldn’t help myself, but I was always able to help French do what he wanted to do,” said Max B. “I always knew I had this over my head; if I had to blow trial, at least I know a n*gga out there holding it down.

“We was a part of something together. I’m talking to French; we communicate a couple times a week. I’m happy for French; he killin’ ’em, number one. [He] got the mean video; he real wavy right now. I always knew, it’s no secret. Get the Coke Wave; listen to it.”

Max B also touched on French Montana’s signing with Bad Boy Records, saying,”At the end of the day, he Bad Boy Records, but Rick Ross and Diddy is executive producing, so it’s a good thing for him. The studio situation is good. Diddy and Ross have a bunch of studios in Miami.”

About keeping French Montana keeping his brand in New York, Max was supportive of the notion:

“Diddy’s Bad Boy, Diddy’s Harlem, Diddy’s New York. Who else is New York but Diddy? So, Bad Boy [is] New Yorked up all the way. All the Bad Boy artists is from New York, damn near – Biggie, Ma$e, Black Rob…everyone from New York. He kept it New York; he a Bad Boy in New York.

“I could see myself anywhere, but I’m a independent entity. I was trying to build my own brand. I worked with Diddy before; I worked with Diddy when I was with Jim [Jones]. I know how Diddy work,” said Max B regarding which label he could envision himself being signed to. “I never worked with Rozay and them, but I could see myself anywhere as long as I got my own studio, and I can work and nobody interfere with my projects and how I work.

“It’s nothing; it don’t matter where I’m at. I could be out in Cali, as long as I got tracks and a studio, I’m wavy. I’m wavy anywhere. You can put me in Pakistan, Iraq, Libya; it don’t even matter. I’m wavy all over.”

EXCLUSIVE: Billionaire Offers Boxer Floyd Mayweather and Rapper 50 Cent $5 Million To Fight In The Ring

(AllHipHop News) While it still remains to be seen if rapper 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are friends or not, a group of investors that includes a billionaire, are offering the pair $5 million to settle their differences.

Billionaire Alki David and partner Damon Feldman of Celebrity Boxing offerings the pair $5 million for a three-round celebrity boxing match.

50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been embroiled in a war of words and tweets over the past month, after a falling out, apparently over business.

The issue appears to be over a proposed boxing venture the pair were supposed to do together called The Money Team Promotions.

But shortly after Floyd Mayweather Jr. was released from prison in August, 50 claimed prison had “changed” Mayweather.

He then announced he was creating a new promotion company with Floyd’s rival, Manny Pacquaio, which was confirmed by Pacquaio’s business manager Michael Koncz.

More recently, on November 1, 50 Cent announced he was done with The Money Team Promotions.

Their war of words escalated over the weekend, when the pair traded shots via Twitter.

According to David, the show would air on FilmOn.com and BattleCam.com, two ventures that David owns or is an investor in.

To make things safe, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and 50 Cent would fight three 2-minute rounds in head-gear, along with big celebrity boxing gloves.

The proposed fight will happen in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 14, if either of the two men accept the offer.

Both 50 Cent in Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been silent on their Twitter accounts over the past several days.

Earlier this year Baby Blue Ivy Carter was born. She’s already got a hit single on her hands with poppa Jay-Z. But, word on the street is that B and J are working on Baby Blue’s first birthday. The kid is only 10 months old. Can you believe it? It seems forever, but she was really born in January of this year. Beyonce and Jigga man are fast working on the 1st birthday for the lil’ princess. I heard the guest list will be magnificent. Somebody even suggested Obama may show up, but I don’t think that will happen. Anyway, this has apparently been a difficult process for the Carters.

Rappers Ecstatic About Obama Second Term Win

(AllHipHop News) Despite a divided country and a narrow margin in the popular vote, America chose last night to re-elect President Barack Obama to his second term in office.

Throughout the election process, rappers and entertainers throughout the Hip-Hop world reacted to the race for re-election by encouraging the youth to vote and nearly all rappers in the industry were in support for Obama throughout the process.

On Election day this year, youth and minorities set record levels for voter turnout, as youth voters increased from 18% to 19% and a little over 49% of eligible youth showed up to vote according to MTV News.

“It feels even better the secoond time around!!!! “#obama2012,” Diddy Tweeted

“Romney lost his birthplace (MI), the state he governed (MA), the other states he has houses in (CA, NH) and his VP’s home state (WI,” John Legend said via Twitter.

“OBAMA. 2012-2016 is yours,” California rapper Game told his followers

“All the blacks goin up kuz my n#### #Obama got 4 more years , #400,” YG said from his Twitter account Yg400 ‏@YG

Important to Obama’s victory were the so-called “swing states” that could have been won by the either party in close races in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida and others.

“Obama Won!” Mac Miller proclaimed after his home state of Pennsylvania went blue for Democrat.

“I knew Ohio would come through #Obama,” Ohio’s Stalley told his followers from his account ‏@Stalley.

While the country is clearly divided on several issues, Obama has already made it clear that he plans to reach across the isle to get more done in his second term by working with the Republicans and by choosing a diverse group of people for his Presidential Cabinet.

More news as details emerge.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did 40 Glocc Lie About Game Having A Gun?

A few weeks back, we heard about 40 Glocc officially suing the Game for beating him up over the summer.

Related: Hip-Hop Rumors: Yikes! 40 Glocc Sues The Game Over Beatdown!

Well now that Game has officially been served with the papers, he is now claiming that 40 Glocc is lying about getting jumped and also lying about him having a gun. Check out what he told Funk Master Flex on Hot 97 last night:

I smashed him, smashed him. You gotta break it down, man, you gotta break it down. I smashed him. He said he got smashed. Little fabrication in there, he said we pulled weapons out and he got jumped. We’ll be back, man. Don’t worry about it.”

Can’t the court and police use Game’s interviews and tweets admitting to beating up 40 Glocc against him in court? Well, that’s not stopping Game, because he’s been tweeting up a storm and threatening to “beat 40’s *ss again & again.”

In a tweet that has been deleted, Game tweeted, “Called police & a lawyer cuz I beat yo azz. SuperCrip got his cape snatched !!!”

Not very smart, Game. Check out his interview with Funk Flex below:

Sidenote: A rep for The Game told TMZ that he feels the lawsuit is “bulls**t” and he plans to fight the case in court.
