Mac Minister Life Sentence Upheld For Killing Rapper

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Mac Minister lost his attempt to appeal his life sentence after he was convicted of murdering Kansas City rapper Anthony “Fat Tone Watkins and another man. Police believe Fat Tone and Germaine “Cowboy” Atkins were murdered in Las Vegas in May of 2005, as retaliation for the 2004 killing of Bay Area rap legend, Mac Dre. Mac Minister and Mathis allegedly lured Fat Tone and Cowboy to Las Vegas with the promise of meeting rapper Snoop Dogg. According to police, Fat Tone and Cowboy were seen leaving their hotel with Mac Minister hours before they were murdered. The bodies of Fat Tone and Cowboy were found in a construction area outside of Las Vegas a short time later. Both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds.According to the Associated Press, lawyers for Mac Minister argued that at least 10 errors were made during his trial. The Nevada Supreme Court ruled only two of those errors shouldn’t have been allowed, but said even those had no bearing on the ruling. While it has never been proven, it was suspected that Fat Tone was involved in Mac Dre’s death. Mac Minister’s case received nationwide attention in 2006, when he was featured on America’s Most Wanted, as he attempted to elude capture.

Don’t come up with an empty palette, bring a lot of ideas to the plate.” Ice Cube confirmed that Dr. Dre is working hard to complete his album Detox, which will reportedly be released this Fall. “He’s making a great record. I’m on it. I’m proud to be, I can’t wait to get back to L.A. to get back in the studio with him. Lauryn Hill: Dreams of a Female Hip-Hop Messiah

This week was Lauryn Hill’s 35th birthday. Normally this event passes without fanfare in industry circles, except this year fans and media became prematurely excited at reports the sequestered star would be making a return by headlining this year’s Rock the Bells tour and performing all the tracks from her timeless debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Unfortunately, the promising news turned out to be false and Hill remains in a self-imposed exile. And over the past few days, the internet has been littered with articles bemoaning her absence, while others bluntly proclaimed the former L Boogie as forever lost. But with the attention given to her absence, the greater question remains as to if Lauryn Hill is needed in today’s Hip-Hop world?

L Boogie’s 1999 Album of the Year triumph at the 41st Grammy Awards for Miseducation… was the culmination of several previous years that saw female emcees make huge strides in Hip-Hop culture. From 1996-1999 women in Hip-Hop not only held their own in the sales market, but presented diverse depictions of femininity and womanhood that served to deconstruct old stereotypes and hint at unlimited boundaries of expression. See below a short list of the biggest selling female Hip-Hop artists, and also note how different they were in style.

Da Brat- Anuthatantrum (Gold, 1996)

Missy- Supa Dupa Fly (Platinum, 1997)

Salt N Pepa- Brand New (Gold, 1997)

Foxy Brown- Ill Na Na (Platinum, 1996), Chyna Doll (Platinum, 1999)

Lil Kim- Hard Core (2X Platinum, 1996)

Eve- Let There Be Eve… (2X Platinum, 1999)

Others such as Rah Digga and Bahamadia didn’t post huge numbers but were highly respected by their peers and critically praised for their lyrical acumen, which many times surpassed their male counterparts. In addition, other female artists were highly visible with well-received singles like Queen Latifah (“It’s Alright), MC Lyte (“Cold Rock a Party,” “Keep on Keepin’ On”), and Queen Pen (“All My Love,” “Party Ain’t a Party”).

Through this renaissance of sorts for femcees, Lauryn Hill was at the forefront, and not just for women. With the success of Miseducation,  Hill was being pushed by the media and fans to be the face of Hip-Hop culture, notably seen in her being chosen by Time Magazine in 1999 as the face of “The Hip-Hop Nation.”

Hip-Hop culture has seen periods where an emcee by sheer force of their phenomenal music becomes an iconic catalyst that advances the art form. In the 80s, artists like KRS-One and Rakim stand out. Throughout the 90s and 00s there were several, including Tupac, B.I.G., Ice Cube, Nas, and Jay-Z. But in Lauryn Hill, Hip-Hop for the first time had a female vision at its helm.

But the hopes many had of Lauryn Hill leading Hip-Hop culture to glorious expansion and change into the 21st century was not to be. Amid personal woes and discontent with her immense celebrity, Hill retreated inward starting in the early 00s, where she remains to this day.

Her departure has unfortunately marked a steep decline in female expression as well. Every year since 2000 the pool of female emcees has steadily shrunk, and the ones that do remain today and get airplay have little diversity in content and presentation amongst each other. In fact it can be argued that female representation in Hip-Hop is at its lowest point, in which media and fans have given more attention to proud harlots like Kat Stacks than underappreciated talents like Jean Grae.

Society by nature always strives for leaders in all forms, whether it is social, political, economical, or religious. Lauryn Hill rejected the messianic calls from fans and press, but in the short time that she was on top the former Fugee created a legacy that still reverberates today. On The Score, she helped redefine the expectations of the female rapper, and broke down any remaining barriers with her tour de force debut. Today, her influence can be heard in numerous artists like Janelle Monae, Jazmine Sullivan, Algebra Blessett, and Nneka.

Instead of hoping for her to be the Hip-Hop savior she never was or wanted to be, we should all be thankful for her contributions and champion the women today who carry on her artistic traditions. It’s a dual responsibility of media and fans. Hip-Hop media by nature is chock-full of sensationalism, publicity stunts, and needless drama. Publications and writers many times feel forced to cover much of this since it always guarantees big hits and readership. But unfortunately those events will not push the culture forward, and should never dominate a writer’s pen over the driving force of Hip-Hop which is creative musical expression. The goal of the Hip-Hop journalist should and always be, to “shine light” on those individuals.

Fans serve as the “constituents” so to speak, who “vote” on artists by purchasing music, attending concerts, and offering feedback to media outlets. If you don’t like what you hear on the radio or see online, you should be doubly insulted because you are being presented with what is believed you want and has been proven to sell. That is why it’s important to support female artists like Janelle Monae and Jean Grae beyond lip service. There is immense power in your hands.

After The Miseduation of Lauryn Hill, we all wanted a female Hip-Hop Messiah, but being L Boogie was good enough. As briefly as she wore the crown, it inspired many and moved us forward artistically. If she ever returns, she will be welcomed just as we do with Sade’s appearances once every decade. But until that day comes, let’s be sure to support and celebrate the aspiring great female emcees and singers today who carry on her legacy.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Jay Gettin’ At Beanie?! What Rapper is Going DOWN? Lloyd Banks To G-Unit!

THE DAILY TWO SENSE

I would like to extend a formal, and hateful CONGRATS TO SWIZZY AND ALICIA! When is my girl Kelly Rowland going to come around so we can follow the path that Swizzy and Alicia made. Illseed and some ill seeds are necessary in this crazy world.

A RAPPER IS GOING DOWN…DOWN…DOWN!

I cannot say who right now, but am going to give you all the details I can at this time. This is what they call a “blind item.” One of your favorite rappers is going DOWN. OK, the rapper is from the south and he is a pretty slick talker. He talks a lil too damn slick. Now this dude is supposedly a tuff dude in the streets but my sources tell me he wasn’t so tough when he was in the streets, but when he became a rapper, he changed. He used that “power” to put it down. This is the crux of the issue. Apparently, he put a hit on somebody and put the battery in the back of a teenager. The teen did the deed and got caught. Well, the rapper is the real score. Now the cops and DT’s have mounted an investigation that they think will put this artist away forEVERRRRRRRRRR… The kid is close to telling everything and you know what happens then…wrap city the slammer.

LLOYD BANKS IS HEADED OVER TO DEF JAM!

It is about to get really interesting in the Def Jam building. I’m not sure how this is supposed to work, but my sources are telling me that Banks is going to the bank with Def Jam. You may recall he was being courted heavily by Interscope again and I thought he may go back, but no dice. He’s going to the home of Rick Ross – Def Jam. I am not sure how much Sha Money XL had to do with this, but I think it was in the works based solely on Lloyd Banks’ heat in the street. Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STYLES P OK?

Hmmmm…I love the people that read the rumors section. There is a real diverse following we have here. One of my homies, who shall remain nameless, was doing a lil something at Central Booking in NYC. He was just there to get his fingerprints and pass them over to the laws in the NYPD. Well, when he’s doing that, he says he sees the one and only Styles P of D-Block bring brought in for some reason or another. Not sure why, but that’s it. Anyway, he also wanted me to let everybody know that the D-Block Car Wash is still poppin’ and there is a D-Block fitted cap available to fans.

JAY-Z GETTING AT BEANS?

Oh. No. Oh. Yes. Jay-Z didn’t say any names on his new song with Drake called “Light Up,” it was clearly a personal verse. Yeahhh…and when I listened to it, I didn’t quite get it. Then, one of my sources hit me up and told me that verse is basically directed to Beans (and probably some of the affiliates). Yeah. Wow. Jay kind of went in on that verse too.

If you listen, there are some Godfather references.

I need a CD quality version with a different hook.

I TOLD YA SO!

Badu is going bucket nekked in the next VIBE!

FANS SCREAM DETOX!

Some of the AHH members went over to the Best Buy in NYC the other day to chat with Diddy over his new Diddybeats thingies he’s selling with Dr. Dre. I am no sure how big the crowd was, but those that were there sure let Dr. Dre know they want their DETOX! I heard all people kept screaming at Dre was Detox this and Detox that. Dre told 106 & Park that he’ll probably let the single with Jay leak next month. He also said that he hoped to have Detox out by September.

LIL MAMA DONE WENT OFF

DIDDY AT GET HIM TO THE GREEK PREMIERE!

Live video by Ustream Peep what I yanked off RadarOnline.com:

Lil Mama recently trashed some borrowed clothes during a music video shoot.

“Lil Mama borrowed cloths for a video shoot and she and all the dancers trashed all the cloths and stole the rest,” the source said. “Some of the clothes were totally ruined, with paint spots and dirt all over them.”

The producer of the music video attempted to get Lil Mama’s people to return the stolen items but had no luck.

“There has been endless lying throughout this scandal that has now been labeled the “Lil Mama Drama” and the producer has plans to take them to court,” the source added. [Source]

RANDOM RUMORS

Mikey T hit me up and passed me a bunch of stuff he was hearing in the streets. Mazarati Fox is supposedly in jail. For some reason, the cops had his spot surrounded…

French Montana and Max B supposedly have a new song called “My Guy” and it was shot before Max went to jail. Also, they are supposedly trying to clear the sample. I hope its not that Mary Wells song.

Supposedly Luda dropped an artist because he was getting some g### vibes from the artist. I can’t say names, but if you see Mikey, ask him about it.

STICKY FINGAZ LIL BRO IS RAPPIN

SCREAMING BABY…

Somebody sent this and it was funny. I don’t know if you want to hear a screaming baby, but its pretty cool.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

There is a song with Waka Flocka, Lil B and Soulja Boy on it. Oh man…what sort of unholy force brought these guys together?

Who is T.I. talking to when he says, “Don’t got damn compare me to no n***a that done dropped 3 mixtapes, when I done dropped 7 albums!”

Did you know that Diddy’s album title refers to a train from Paris that aided Jews in escaping the Nazi invaders?

Gary Coleman has been rushed to the hospital and is reportedly in critical condition.

Kendra reportedly acts like she doesn’t like having the sex tape out on the market, but in reality she’s getting caked up off the tape.

People are saying 50 Cent is just well photoshopped and made up in these shocking new pics of him. What do you think?

T.I.’s got this mixtape but his album may have the heat. He’s got songs with Gaga and Eminem in the can already.

I still can’t believe Delonte West. SMH.

Diddy recently found out that his mom worked at a strip club as a stripper!

Infamous Mobb has broken up. Is this news?

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

Son coulda had the tenderoni’s but he was going for the macaroni. Seriously, this is sick and disgusting. A 16 year old boy was arrested for raping an 83 year-old-woman. YUCK!

JAY-Z, WE LOVE YOU!!!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

Kanye West Joins Protest Of Arizona’s Immigration Laws

Kanye West has joined a musical boycott of Arizona’s new immigration law, which has caused a firestorm of controversy.

Zach de la Rocha of Rage Against The Machine has sparked the protest and the rock rapper furnished a list of musicians that have supported the movement.

West has been joined by Cypress Hill, Conor Oberest, Sonic Youth, Massive Attack, Ozomatli, Rise Against, Pitbull and Tenacious D.

De la Rocha said their boycott of the state was comparable to the legendary boycott of the Montgomery Bus system in the 60’s, which sparked the Civil Rights Movement.

“When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, they arrested her. As a result, people got together and said we are not going to ride the bus until they change the law. It was this courageous action that sparked the Montgomery bus boycott,” a statement read. “What if we got together, signed a collective letter saying, “we’re not going to ride the bus”, saying we are not going to comply. We are not going to play in Arizona. We are going to boycott Arizona?!”

Many groups, organizations and even cities have opted or proposed boycotting Arizona for the immigration law. The city of Los Angeles has approved an economic boycott of Arizona, which will result in about $8 million in lost revenue from contracts. Another $58 million could be affected in other contracts and investments, many of which lie in air travel.

Opponents of the immigration law claim mandate promotes racial profiling and is inherently unconstitutional. It lets officer of the law make personal judgements whether or not there is a “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the United States illegally.

The law takes affect at the end of July.

Reports: Swizz And Alicia Keys Expecting Baby, Engaged To Marry

Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys are engaged to be married and representatives for the singer have confirmed that the couple is expecting their first child.

The announcement was made earlier today and a rep for Keys has confirmed the news to AllHipHop.com.

Gossip writers Jawn Murray and Marc Malkin of E! also made announcements via their social networks.

“Rep confirms Alicia Keys is pregnant! My scoop was 100% correct! Apparently her & Swizz Beatz are engaged too,” Murray said.

Speculation has been high since a series of images appeared to show a “baby bump” on Keys.

Thus far, neither Keys nor Swizz Beatz camps issued any public statement. This is the first child for Keys, who is 29 years old. Swizz Beatz, 31, has two sons from his ex-wife Mashonda.
