Although Hip-Hop remains a musical influence, Heavy D is finding success in a different genre via his own record label Stride Entertainment and a brand new reggae album titled Vibes.
The project, which was recently released digitally on iTunes, debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard reggae chart and No. 2 on iTunes reggae chart.
The release may surprise fans, who know the rapper for such classic records as Mr. Big Stuff, We Got Our Own Thang,” “Now That We Found Love” and Black Coffee.
I set Stride Entertainment up for this release and to be able to have the freedom to create, Heavy D. told AllHipHop.com. I didnt really have the opportunity to do full-on albums back then because I was under contract with a label who paid you money to do a certain thing.
Heavy D maintains the new project is a natural extension of infusing reggae into his music over the years.
He admitted to putting the same effort into Vibes as he has done with his rap albums, but admitted that as CEO of his own label, his creative freedom is boundless.
They [record labels] didnt regard reggae at the time as something that was viable for the company or something that they felt would sell a whole lot or records, Heavy D. continued. I also felt like I wanted to do it on my terms. I wanted to be able to express myself in a way where I didnt have anybody being concerned about whether or not they’d be reimbursed.
Among the guests found on Vibes are reggae stars Barrington Levy and Sizzla.
The first single from the project is the project is the steady-tempo, horn-heavy Long Distance Girlfriend.
While Vibes could have been released at the height of his rap career, Heavy D sums up the motivation to pursue his latest endeavor with one word.
My passion brought me here. I was looking for something to do. I was in the studio trying to make music. It wasnt living up to the standards that I wanted to and I just couldnt see myself putting out a mediocre product. And honestly, the real reason I did it is because it just felt right. It felt good.
The opportunity to work on Vibes allowed Heavy D to return to his roots while fully exposing a side of him that fans have rarely heard.
Prior to the album, the rapper worked with reggae legends Josey Wales and Robert French, in addition to Super Cat and Banton.
I missed the type of reggae that inspired me initially. I missed all of the classic raw sound of the 60s and the 70s, when cats didnt have a lot of money to work with. The album is probably 90 percent live instruments, but then my Hip-Hop comes in and then you want your drums hard a certain way. So this is a very nice collaboration of where Im from, what I did and what Ive become.
Despite the move into reggae and his passion for the genre, there is no chance of Heavy D abandoning the elements that generated his love of rap music.
Youll definitely hear me rap again, but I dont know if Ill put out a whole rap album, Heavy D. told AllHipHop.com. Id be happy to guest appear on somebodys track. You never know. Its one of those things. If I do get inspired to do a whole album. If I come up with the right concept, right theme, right direction. I just have to be excited about it.
Hip-Hop star Lil Wayne helped ease the grief of the family of one of his biggest fans on Saturday (October 18), during a benefit event.
According to Albany New Yorks Times-Union newspaper, 16-year-old Ryan Slingerland was killed was killed last month when his car skied off a dusty road crashed into a tree.
Slingerlands death was listed in the newspaper and mentioned his love of Lil Waynes music.
An Albany reader named Kathleen Busch read the article and was familiar with Lil Wayne as well, as he and Bryan Baby Williams own an apartment next door to her in Sunny Isles, Florida.
She wrote a note to Lil Wayne and Baby and explained to them: A few words from someone meaningful to Ryan would mean more than any amount of counseling or antidepressants. People on the outside see your fur and jewelry and wealth but we’re all the same. This is your opportunity to do something.
Busch sent the letter in a package to her mother-in-law, who walked it down to the rappers apartment and told the story to a bouncer, who allowed her to enter and present the package to Lil Wayne and Birdman.
During the benefit concert on Saturday, which was held to help raise money to pay for Slingerlands funeral, his parents Mike and Lindy were surprised by a special package sent personally from Lil Wayne and Baby.
The pair sent two autographed magazines and a sympathy card bearing the words Stay Hy to the cheers of family members and friends, who had come to pay their respects to Ryan.
That same day, during the BET Awards, Lil Wayne revealed he was expecting a son of his own, his second child.
Music may be a priority with Soulja Boy TellEm, but the rap star is adding to his entertainment achievements with various ventures.
Soulja Boy TellEm is preparing for the release of his forthcoming second album iSouljaboytellem, which follows the rappers best-selling 2007 debut project Souljaboytellem.com.
The new album will include production from Mr. Collipark, Polow Da Don and Soulja Boy TellEm himself.
Although his sophomore album will come one year after his first album, the rapper admits to being more than ready to unveil a new offering.
I know my fans are ready too, said Soulja Boy Tellem, who alluded to his current business dealings. I have so much more in store this time around with a shoe and clothing deal, an animated series and some special surprises I cant talk about yet.
The new business ventures are among a series of non-music related projects for the rapper, who has amassed more than 5.3 million ringtone downloads, 300,000,000 YouTube views and 38,000,000 views for the video to his Grammy-nominated hit single Crank That (Soulja Boy).
With his success, Soulja Boy Tellem signed a major deal with Yums Shoes to personally design his own sneakers under the companys Block Star line.
The first line of sneakers, which debut in November, will feature colorful graffiti art emblazoned on the soles of each sneaker.
November will also see the official launch of the Soulja Boy TellEm-created animated series on the entertainers website, www.souljaboytellem.com.
With his influence spreading beyond the microphone and a new album arriving in stores, Soulja Boy TellEm is confident his presence will be felt for months to come.
Im going to continue to keep up the momentum through 2009, so plan on seeing me all over the internet on your favorite websites and blogs with my new videos and updates on where Im at and what I am doing, the rapper stated. You are not going to be able to get away from Soulja Boy Tellem.
Soulja Boy TellEms iSouljaboytellem is slated to hit stores Dec. 16.
Way dooown in the jungle deep the bad-assed lion stepped on the signifying monkeys feet. That line was probably older than most you (its older than me) but it was one of the principal calling cards of one of Hip-Hops greatest inspirations: Mr. Rudy Ray Moore. You may know him better as Dolemite!
Moore was a cult giant with his Blaxploitation era films which featured sex, the wackest kung fu moves ever, and most important, Moores narrative, pre-rap rhyming stories that were filled with rich imagery that was, as Alis ring raps before him, a continuance of Black oral tradition, and a precursor of the ideals that power our rich story tellers like Slick Rick, Ghostface, and others.Moore was initially a soul singer following service in the U.S. Army. He decided to switch gears in the entertainment industry once he realized he wasnt getting any traction, and he went into the comedic direction. After hearing a toast from a homeless guy, while he worked in a record store, Moore decided to put the subject of that toast, a character named Dolemite, to real life. With that he released his first comedy album Eat Out More Often, which is also notable for its narration of Shine and The Great Titanic.
His records were most definitely not for children, and were laced with profanity and inappropriate imagery, but an entire generation of young adults got hip to Moores many characters like Dolemite, Petey Wheatstraw the Devils Son in Law(one of rapper Commons early aliases) , the Disco Godfather (yes, the Disco Godfather) and the “Signifying Monkey.”
From wax, Rudy Ray took it to the big screen, with his 1975 co-written flick Dolemite. Although it was cheaply made, and comedy driven, Dolemite tackled some key issues that to this day plague poor and urban communities including crime, drug abuse, crooked preachers, and political corruption. It was a success in the box office and spawned many sequels.
Rudy Rays legacy is unmistakable with regards to Hip-Hop. He forwarded the tradition of the toast, a combination of humor and poetry inherent to generations of Black storytellers. His Dolemite movies provided countless moments of entertainment and fodder/inspiration. From Snoop pimpin hoes and clockin a grip like my name is Dolemite, to Common [Sense] referring to himself as Petey Wheatstraw, rappers have paid homage to Moore. But it doesnt stop there. 2 Live Crew carried on the blue record tradition cutting slices of Dolemite into their classic joint Throw That Dick. In addition to that he appeared on Big Daddy Kanes album Taste of Chocolate on a track called Big Daddy Vs. Dolemite.
When we lose someone like Rudy Ray Moore, we dont just lose them we lose what they represent. We lose the comedy. We lose the inspiration. We lose intelligent irreverence. We lost one of the baddest mother*****s to ever grip a microphone. R.I.P. Rudy Ray. Dolemite lives!
P.S. I played myself. Shout to ODB and Kelis.
This vid is pretty much all Dolemite

TODAY’S RUMORS!
DMXS OTHER NEW BABY?
You heard from me last week or so that DMX had a new baby down in Miami. That he was there for the birth and then had to go to Arizona for crime related court cases. Right? Well, I have word that DMX was also recently found to be the father of a 5-year-old girl in Buffalo, New York. Ouch. Well, not ouch, because children are a blessing! It could be a doozie if you are broke, accused of a zillion offenses this year and your career is on the rocks like never before. Anyway, I heard the test was that 99.99% You Are The Father sort of thing.
THE GAME AND 50 CENT ON ONE SONG?
Im not exactly sure where this is coming from but Sharabi sent it to me. There are rumors abound that Busta Rhymes has managed to get 50 Cent and The Game on the same record for his album. How? Well, there is a pre-existing song that features 50 Cent. Busta convinced The Game to do a song for a remix of said record. Well, 50 Cent gave his permission to appear on the remix with The Game for the promo value for his own record, Before I Self Destruct. I heard it is going to hit the net really soon. Stay tuned.
AUBREY HEADED TO G-UNIT?
I don’t know how true this is, based on what happened to Olivia. But I heard that Aubrey, formerly of Danity Kane, is now going to be a member of 50 Cent and G-Unit. The time might be ripe for her since she can now ride the beef wave. With 50 at the helm, she’s probably able to get it poppin right now. Unlike Olivia, she’s got the publicity wind at her back. I did hear that this is probably going to be a joint venture with Diddy. You know Diddy is about that paper, so kicking people out isn’t going to stop that. I heard that 50 isn’t so fond of Diddy so, who knows? (Remember the Ma$e situation?)
SOMEBODY DISSES BUN B?
Whoa WHOA WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!
Who would dare diss the honorable Bun B? There is some dude from the West Coast named Hard Head and he has come out and dissed Bun B. Now, you know, but B.B. is the man and definitely one of Hip-Hops most respected figures. Now, H.H. claims that Bun/UGK stole his song, Thats Gangsta. (I did no research, just so you know.) Anyway, this dude has a song called You Aint S**t. I beg to differ, Hard Head. Anyway, Thats that. Another silly rap beef. If somebody takes your song, you take them to court.
LIL WAYNE: MARRIAGE AND BABIES?
I dont know that I even care, but Lil Wayne is supposedly going to be getting married to Nivea. YEAH. Anyway, he definitely said, over the weekend, that he is expecting another child soon. Below is a blog entry from Nivea that seems to reinforce or mark the start of the wedding rumors. Shes not saying a thing though.
To let everyone know about the “HAPPY BDAY WAYNE” song was a private song made by Mack Maine feat. Nivea for Lil’ Wayne’s birthday; the song was not suppose to be released to the public but it was released on Mack Maine’s Myspace page. There was a lot of requests for the song, so it was uploaded on this page. We were just made aware about a lot of rumors flying around blog sites about the song & no the rumors are not being addressed. It has not been confirmed & there is no known “sources”. Like I’ve said before this page is to promote Niveas’ music & up incoming Events or Projects she will be apart of. This page is not to talk about rumors you hear or haters to hate. If you don’t have anything positive to say about Nivea or her Music please keep it to your self. Thanks.
Xoxo?
POOR PRAS
Now, I dont know if this qualifies as snitching, but it sure qualifies as playing Pras from the Fugees OUT. Somebody called the media on Pras, not the cops. So, thats probably a loophole in the stop snitching rule. Pras Michel and Ray Devers of Fight Klub Studios have an issue. Apparently, Pras owes the man about $19k in studio money and Dev decided to call ABCs Seven On Your Side to get a New York news story poppin. “I’ve contacted his management team. I’ve contacted his lawyers and just (get) stories after stories.” Pras apparently tried to make good in June with a check for $19 k and the sombish bounced. Since, Pras was unavailable.
When ABC caught up to Pras, this is how it went down.
Tappy: You got a debt there of about $19,000 that hasn’t been paid and a bounced check. Did you know about that?
Pras: No, I didn’t. We’ve been talking to them about it.
Next, Pras tried to put us off, telling us to talk to Ray from Fight Klub Studios.
Tappy: We’ve talked to Ray, (he) wants us to talk to you. Ray wants us to talk to you and he wants to know when he’s going to get his money?
Pras: You need to speak to my attorney.
Tappy: When is he going to get his money?
So we called his attorney, who never gave us a reason for the non payment. But that same day Fight Klub Studios got a down payment, $5000 from Pras, with the promise of more coming.
At least hes trying.

KATT WILLIAMS ARRESTED?
I dont know where the forces in PR get these stories from. But Katt Williams reportedly gave up his hosting duties at the BET Awards because he lost a break dancing competition against T-Pain. Where is the footage? Thats what I need to see to believe. Here is the blip:
Katt Williams was all set to host his 3rd consecutive BET Hip Hop Awards this weekend in Atlanta – until he bet T-Pain for those duties in a break dancing competition. After some consideration, T-Pain accepted the challenged and surprisingly uprocked his way into becoming the host of the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards. A man of his word, Williams handed the duties over to T-Pain. Although gracious in defeat, Williams thought Pain had an unfair advantage. “You can’t use a vocoder in break dancing,” he stated.
You cant win a b-boy contest by just uprocking! Video, people, video!
ILL PICS
My boy James Goff is a comedian based out in New York and Ice-T and Coco came to his show on Saturday night.

OK. So I got a gang of new pictures for that 50 Cent contest. I am going to post them, but it’s definitely going to be after today. I will save some of you embarrassment, but most are good…
Rumor has it Jay Sean, a big time singer in the UK has signed a deal with Cash Money here in the US.
Shout out to Colin Powell for making a big move and endorsing Barack Obama for the president. Nice endorsement, since he’s a military hero.
Also, shout out to the Phillies, who are in the World Series. Eagles fans are like, Well take it!
Rumor has it Jadakiss will be doing some shows with G-Unit in an unprecedented act of solidarity.
There is no Game on Detox (Boooooo!!!!), but I heard 50 Cent will have about 2-3 songs on the phantom classic.
Speaking of 50 Cent, I heard his new CD is going to have a gang of people on it. I heard they are Juelz, Ne-Yo, Maino and even C-Murder.
Did anybody else see Sarah Palin’s husband (and loyal and longtime member of a secessionist party of Alaska) hold a sign saying “Charles Manson Was A Community Organizer?” This was at a rally for Sen. Norm Coleman. What a loser. Anyway, Charles Manson is an ill artist click here to see some of his stuff.
BIG, BIG R.I.P. to Four Tops frontman Levi Stubbs. He was 72 years old and had been ill. He sang Motown hits like “Reach Out (I’ll Be There)” and “Baby I Need Your Loving.
SUPER BIG R.I.P. to Dolemite as well. I am hearing he passed away after a prolonged illness. I knew about the illness so he lasted longer than expected.
Shout out to my homey Amaron M.

If you care, here are the lyrics to the “Sarah Palin rap” on SNL. Also that pic of her “Community organizing Charles Manson” husband is there too.
Lastly, if you ever wanted a “Swagger Like Us” posse song, here it is. Diddy, Fabolous, Freeway, Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Jim Jones (YAY), Kanye West, Lil Wayne, M.I.A., Pusha T, Rick Ross, Swagger Like Us (Remix), T.I., Trae, and for some reason Trey Songz.
RANDOM QUOTES
Juelz Santana recently told AllHipHop.com a lil something about that Lil Wayne Project. Look for the full interview really soon.
Juelz: But the good thing that I like to tell people is the album is done. We recorded all the records. I probably got like 40 records sitting on the computer right now. Once I can go in the office and really sit down and talk to him (Lil Wayne), which will probably be this weekend. The album is done its still coming so look out for I Cant Feel my Face ya dig.
That is the condensed version of the interview, but all you stan fans, there you go.
Busta Rhymes is one smart dude. Dont get his uniforms confused. Check out what he had to say in a recent AllHipHop.com story on the Economy.
“I think it’s horrible. I think it was done intentionally so that they can start introducing and implementing new things like the AMERO and the national ID card and things like that. They doing things right now and I hope people pay closer attention to what’s going on. A long time ago, Mexico, Canada, and the United States became one. So they trying to one world government this side of the planet and all that.
I don’t want to get into the conspiracy talk but you know I’m good for that. I’m good for that, you know what I’m saying. Ever since The Coming album in ’96, when I told people it was only 5 years left. 2001 you saw what happened downtown, that was 5 years later. In 1998 the cover of Extinction Level Event was what happened downtown, so it’s like the information is out there, it’s just people don’t pay attention to it because at the time, if you pay attention too early, they try to make you look like you bugged out ;you crazy or something’s wrong with you. You’re just a conspiracy theorist.
I just feel like you know, it’s time the people see that things come to pass. Don’t ignore anything. Even if they may not come to pass, pay attention to it because at the end of the day, it’s better to be safe than sorry. So you can look at these things and be like “What If?” Pay attention to the ‘What Ifs?'”
JOJO LETS IT BE KNOWN.
SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
Over the weekend, a friendly neighborhood game of chess turned deadly. These dudes were playing freakin’ chess at 3 am on Sunday and one of them ended up dead as a pawn. They said that a 29 year old slayed a 39 year old in the early morning hours. Police found Michael Steward, 39, unresponsive at the scene. He was pronounced later at the scene. David Christian, 29, was charged with murder and public intoxication. Nobody quite is saying what exactly happened, but a lot of liquor was involved and a huge, deadly fight. What is sad is these guys were really good friends and nobody saw this coming ever. They hung out a lot. I just hope nobody said, “Who you think you are? Rza or something? You bad? Then, king me then, MF!”
EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY
The office is the Epic Fail, not the dude that spazzes. This isnt new, but its always entertaining to watch.
I wish I could have gone nuts like this when I was at a 9 to 7.

“I Wonder”
AllHipHop.com has confirmed that influential comedian Rudy Ray Moore AKA Dolemite passed away on Friday (October 17) due to complications from diabetes.
Moore began his career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1960s, and first gained international notoriety after co-writing and starring in the 1975, signature blaxpoitation film Dolemite.
Through characters like Queen Bee and the fast-talking, street rapping Dolemite, the movie has gone on to achieve cult status and provided a blueprint to assist emcees like Snoop Dogg, Lil Kim, and Too $hort in the development of their stage personas.
The success of the film spawned a 1976 sequel, Human Tornado AKA Dolemite II.
Moore recently completed a third film titled The Dolemite Expression, which is slated for release this spring.
While his over the top, raunchy content prevented him from having the mainstream success of contemporaries like Richard Pryor, Moore retained a loyal fanbase throughout his near 40 year career.
Aware that Hip-Hop was an extension of his rapid-fire street punchlines ( rappin and trappin is my game!), Moore embraced the culture and since the late 80s has collaborated with 2 Live Crew, Big Daddy Kane, Insane Clown Posse, and Snoop Dogg.
A prolific performer in his own right, Moore was known as the king of party records for his prodigious amount of comedy LPs released since the late 60s.
To date, Moore has a resume which includes 30 albums and 18 films.
At press time, funeral arrangements for Rudy Ray Moore are being finalized in Toledo, Ohio.
Welcome back to Tale of the Tape, your weekly destination for mixtape analysis. The ratings work like this, Heavy Rotation is superior product, and any Hip-Hop fan should enjoy it. Peep It means that has its moments, but some may just not feel it. One And Done is exactly that, fans should listen one time. Drop It means that you have a certified coaster on your hands.
This week, we have Detroits own Black Milk in the mix with his new effort ELEC. For some international exposure we look at Canadian emcee JD Eras Coming To America. Block huggers and internet thugs alike will be primed to see The Diplomats and D-Block have come together for DukeDaGod Presents: Presidential Paper Volume 1. Mixtape commish Mick boogie drops his Honor Roll mixtape and finally, the unconventional Charles Hamilton delivers Staff Development.
DukeDaGod
DukeDaGod Presents: Presidential Paper Volume 1
One And Done
Dipset hasn’t been the most productive collective lately. Amidst beef inside and outside of the camp, the releases have been sparse at best. That’s why for fans, DukeDaGod Presents Presidential Paper Vol 1, could have presented hope for a return to prominence. Instead, it presents a group of uninspired tracks tacked together with bland beats and even more bland lyrics. With Dipset, even if there isn’t a profound sense of lyricism, there is proof of swagger. In this tape, there is none.
Even so, there are some impressive tracks hiding amongst the filler. Static Selectah’s “Living For The City” shows Jadakiss dropping a tough sixteen. J.R Writer’s “Ride Or Die” features the young gunner at his best, slaying bar after bar. 40 Cal’s “Memories” stands out as a well produced and introspective track. These few tracks amongst others (“Get Rich”, “Smashtime Freestyle”, “Who Expected it”) save it from being a complete failure, but they can’t don’t do more than that.
Black Milk
ELEC
Peep It
Detroit has some heat. With the second hot mixtape from the city in as many months, the D may be the city to watch. Dont take it on faith; simply listen to ELEC, as you can hear the finesse that Black Milk uses to craft his cuts. With guests like Royce Da 59, who wilds out with Caltoit and Ras Kass on Go Hard, The Genius GZA on 7 Pounds, and Busta Rhymes who spazzes on Mouth Music; this mixtape covers much ground. Milk even goes in himself with tracks like Give The Drumma Sum showing his dexterity in not just production, but the art of the emcee.
Charles Hamilton
Staff Development
Peep It
Charles Hamilton is an interesting character. That could be surmised by just paying attention to the introduction, where he asks if there needs to be an intro, and proceeds to answer his own question by doing one. Eccentrics aside, Staff Development is a solid mixtape. His crew gets in the mix, behind Hamiltons own production. That is where the disc wavers, as its hits (I.S.As High) and misses (J Means Rock The Join). However, Hamiltons distinct flow brings it home, especially on stand outs Jet Blue & Party of Five. Pay attention to this guy.
Mick Boogie
Honor Roll
Heavy Rotation
Mick Boogie is one of the top mixtape DJs in the game. His latest, Honor Roll continues the tradition. In a tape hosted by MC Serch, Honor Roll pays tribute to the legends being honored by VH1s Hip-Hop Honors 2008 awards. Various artists come together to do each legends classics, and do them justice. Look no further than the ’08 versions of Childrens Story by Kidz In The Hall, Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk with Joell Ortiz, Scram Jones, and Loot. Additionally Stakes Is High is covered twice by U.N.I. and Talib Kweli respectfully, Short But Funky is tackled by the West Coasts own Mista Fab, and Hip-Hop Hooray with AP. It is a fitting tribute for De La Soul, Too Short, Naughty By Nature, Cypress Hill, and Slick Rick. Props are deserved for the Commissioner for this one.
JD Era
Coming To America
Peep It
It can get warm up north. JD Era is an interesting lyricist, combining a hard hitting flow with some interesting lyrics. On Coming To America he makes a good case on why people should be listening to the kid. The evidence lies in tracks like Hollywood where he displays his flowing potential and A Millie, where he attacks the already overused beat with some serious venom. However, theres some blame to place upon DJ Wristpect, as his awkward fades make this one an odd listen. Either way, for those who want to take a trip north, you will be hard pressed to find someone better than Era.
Tale Of The Tape
Watch this McCain vs. Obama debate Jerry Springer style!
Barack Obama may be “that one,” but The White Rapper Show’s infamous John Brown isn’t letting “this other guy” get the upper hand in the presidential election. The VH1 reality alumni’s latest single “Sarah Palin (I Wanna Lay Pipe)” takes another token stab at the governor’s lack of experience; this time combining her sexual appeal with her unorthodox personality. John Brown’s latest project, titled John Brown Or Die: A Revival You Can Believe In, is touted to give an inside look to the real John Brown. Right here, check Mr. Ghetto Revivals clear stance in the political realm and how no matter what Nov. 4th’s outcome, he isn’t leaving the Da ‘Burbz. AllHipHop.com: How do you think the White Rapper Show helped your career?John Brown: The real reason I got involved with it was because of Ego Trip and to me to have an ability to create strong statements in their art. I really wanted to be a part of that and have the opportunity, you know, it just lead to other opportunities in terms of performing throughout the country and meeting so many different people from all walks of life. It really just gave me a platform, an entrance point, with which to bring the music that I had been making for years. And so working with Ego Trip was definitely an honor and they have a lot of cool other stuff that’s doing. AllHipHop.com: Did you ever feel exploited by it?John Brown: Well, I mean this is America, you know, it’s a big exploitation fest. So, just as much as VH1 was exploiting me for advertising money, I was exploiting VH1 for my advertising money. That’s why I was running around repping my company, repping my moniker, repping my slogan in the American way. AllHipHop.com: Lately, from SNL to other online spoof videos, there’s been a lot of commentary on Sarah Palin. Why did you decide to take part in that as well with your new single?John Brown: Well I think that she sort of represents a lot of circus and superficiality associated with politics and I think there’s a lot of superficial reasons why she was even given the space and look that she got on the national stage. To me, I just saw a lot of irony between her policies in terms of oil drilling and also to the sexual promiscuity or sort of flirtatious vibe she was trying to give off to voters. And I just wanted to combine the two because I just think that it was very Hip-Hop, you know, something that’s very representative of Hip-Hop. And I didn’t see anybody else really aiming towards that in this election. So I just really wanted to add a different unique angle and make it a statement.John Brown “Sarah Palin (I Wanna Lay Pipe)” Video
AllHipHop.com: So what do you think of this so-called Palin Effect?John Brown: You know it’s one of those situations where if it benefited him, he would be ingenious, but if it doesn’t work out it’s totally disastrous and foolish. So, you know, based upon what’s been going on it turns out it’s the latter. AllHipHop.com: What did you think of the final presidential debate?John Brown: I’m always sort of shocked the way people can put so much emphasis on body language and basically how one expresses themselves versus what they’re representing. And I just thought that in terms of content and what policies the candidates were expressing it was so obvious that, you know, [Barack] Obama had an actual plan and, you know, this other guy [John McCain] was just a complete, you know, shallow, personal attacker that really had no substance behind what he’s been doing; he’s just continuing what’s been going on. AllHipHop.com: What will you be doing on election night?John Brown: On election day, we’re going to be performing in Brooklyn and also making a lot of different pushes to people to basically get out and vote because it’s very important. And people, you know, sometimes take things for granted, you know, certain polls and whatever. And I would love to see Barack Obama, I think he’s a good person. At the end of the day, we don’t have very many options in this country and given the two options that we’re given, you’re going to go with the one that’s trying to fight for everyday people. AllHipHop.com: And if the outcome isn’t ideal for you, then?John Brown: Well I think we would further descend into this sort of anti-intellectual ignorant country and I fear for what would happen ideally. And maybe, maybe they could have some sort of affect that could be positive on a greater scale, who knows? But I definitely think the agenda that has been pursued and followed is totally detrimental to any industrialized nation, any leading nation, in terms of any aspect that makes a country strong. I pray that it doesn’t go that route, but if it does, I’m not one of those people that’s going to leave America. To me this is my country, this is our country, and regardless of the outcome it’s important that we stayed and represent what it is that is righteous. John Brown “Pimp Mode” VideoAllHipHop.com: What other projects are coming up for you?John Brown: I got a new mixtape that’s about to drop it’s called Burb Life and there’s a lot of bangers on there. I’ve got a studio in my crib so I’m always making songs and we have the King Of Da ‘Burbz digital album and it’s also ready to go. We’re just trying to get the timing right because it’s one of those situations where I had my King Of Da ‘Burbz campaign, I dropped the “Keg Party” video and Keg Party EP and with this situation, this campaign, this election trying to hit society and everybody at the correct time. So I realized I had to put my King Of Da ‘Burbz campaign on hold for a second to get this John Brown Or Die campaign popping. So that’s why I’m releasing that right now, but I’ve got a lot of other material that’s really into the King Of Da ‘Burbz album that’s going to be coming out. John Brown “Key Party” Video
An informal gathering of stars in Atlanta was marred by a brief moment of violence this afternoon
(October 19), when an altercation erupted involving members of rapper Jim Jones’ entourage.
According to an eye witness, a melee broke out shortly after We The
Best/Def Jam artist Ace Hood wrapped the video shoot for his second single, “Ride,” featuring Trey Songz, Juelz Santana and Rick Ross.
The shoot, which took place directly across the street from Busta Rhymes’ taping for his “Arab Money” video, attracted various
celebrities who were visiting Atlanta for the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
As celebrities like Polow Da Don, Young Buck, Jadakiss, DJ Khaled, and Juelz Santana were making their exits, several men exited the soundstage, chasing an unidentified man.
Seconds later, the man was reportedly assaulted by a group of men, who were allegedly part of Jim Jones and Juelz Santana’s entourage.
Immediately following the fight, both Jones and Santana were rushed away from
the scene by their security details.
The alleged victim walked away from the incident apparently unscathed.
You cant say the Executioner didnt tell you the outcome beforehand. Months
before last Saturdays master-class over middleweight champion Kelly
Pavlik, Bernard Hopkins proclaimed that I aint afraid of no Ghost.
Pavlik found that out in spades via a thorough boxing
education, as Hopkins outfought, outfoxed, and shockingly outpunched
his younger foe over 12 dominating rounds.
Hopkins,
breaking out the black robe and executioners mask for the ring walk,
stormed out for round one countering and feinting the robotic Pavlik. A
master of distance, Hopkins easily peppered the reigning middleweight
champ with jabs while making a concerted effort to work the body with
hooks.
As
with many past Hopkins opponents, Pavlik struggled to find a rhythm
early, but was able to land a decent right to the body. Also, the
Youngstown, Ohio native found some reprieve after Hopkins received an
early warning for holding the head.
Round
two saw Hopkins compound Pavliks confusion with surprising
combinations. After landing a thudding left hook, the Executioner
followed up with a hook to the body and a straight right to the head.
Wary of exchanges against his larger foe, Pavlik sought to establish
the jab but found that weapon compromised by Hopkins own stiff lead
punch.
continued his woeful offense into round three, as Hopkins continued
opening up early with combinations rarely seen in his past fights. Secure that Pavlik was too slow and open defensively to counter,
Hopkins blasted him with a lead right hand followed by a jab. Pavlik
continued to plod forward, and Hopkins assaulted him with a double left
hook combo. To finish up another dominating round, the Executioner
clocked Pavlik with a hard left hook before landing another straight
right lead.
By
the fifth, Kelly had yet to post a round, and the pro-Pavlik crowd
began to turn against him, marveling at the underdogs performance.
Without pressure debilitating his stamina like the Calzaghe fight,
Hopkins continued his free reign to set the fights pace. Taking a
solid right, Pavlik fired his own right hand only to eat a right-left
combination in return. The inside offered no relief, as Hopkins deftly
controlled Pavlik there and prevented him from landing any significant
shots.
In
the eighth, a frustrated Pavlik lost a point for hitting behind the
head. No stranger to fouls, Hopkins received his own deduction in round
nine for excessive holding, likely to catch a much needed breather.
Still, Hopkins clean punching won him the rounds, particularly his
landing of a half dozen hard right hands, and a wince-inducing left to
the solar-plexus.
A
desperate, swollen right and bleeding left eye Pavlik finally got on
board in the tenth, establishing a decent offensive round behind a huge
right hand upstairs and consistent work to the body. However, Hopkins
let his discouraged foe know his advantage was only temporary, snapping Pavliks head back with a short right followed by
flurries on the inside to conclude the round.
Both
men went into the trenches in round eleven, content to ignore the
referee and maul each other. The old master was at home here, and spent
most of the round gathering his energy and lulling Pavlik into a trap.
Over the rounds closing half, Hopkins landed his umpteenth right hand,
and subsequently tied up Pavlik to prevent any possible follow-up.
Seeking
to duplicate his late KO of Felix Trinidad seven years ago, Hopkins
began the twelfth winging homerun right hand shots. Two connected and
badly stunned Pavlik, driving him back. Showing heart, Kelly responded
with a hard right of his own, which only enraged Hopkins who responded
with taunts and combinations.
After
the bell, both camps spilled into the ring to separate the two, who
continued jawing and throwing shots. Hopkins, once again proving his
critics wrong, stood at first defiant to the crowd. The stance then
became proud as the audience showered approval and respect at one of
the best performances the sport has ever seen from a 43 year old
fighter.Scores for the lopsided Hopkins decision were 119-106, 117-109, and 118-108.
Once the emotions calmed, both men were gracious to each other in the post-fight interviews.
This
fight will make you or break you. Go back to the gym and learn that
slickness and youll be a bad man, Hopkins stated to Pavlik,
continuing the boxing lesson that had begun in the ring. Dont let
this fight destroy you You need to bend your knees more like your coach
was telling you. Middleweight is your destiny.
I
just could not get off tonight. I dont know why, a still stunned and
disappointed Pavlik stated. He didnt fight like he was old. He fought
good and gave me a lesson I felt like a sub-novice fighter tonight.
Were all, myself included, going to learn to never underestimate Bernard Hopkins.
As for
the Executioner, hell remain a viable option for the winner of
Jones-Calzaghe next month. And since Hopkins knows styles make
fights, hell likely pass on facing Chad Dawson, whom he wouldnt hold
a speed advantage over and is much more dynamic offensively than the
current middleweight champ. Still, Hopkins many take his chances and
relish the opportunity to take another highly touted, undefeated young
gun to school.
For
Kelly Pavlik, he can return to the middleweight division and seek to
repair his image by facing mandatory challenger Marco Antonio Rubio
(who scored a split decision win over Enrique Ornelas on the
undercard), or test fate by immediately going after hard-punching
Arthur Abraham.
Either
way Pavlik has exciting options, and now realizes at this time he has
no business fighting above 160 pounds. Hopefully as Hopkins advised,
Kelly will use this fight to focus on developing better defense and
lateral movement.
The win lifts Bernard Hopkins record to 49-5-1, 32 KOs, while Kelly Pavlik falls to 34-1, 30 KOs.
Zab Judah To Fight on Jones-Calzaghe Undercard, Preps Return to 140
Former
welterweight champion Zab Judah has confirmed that hell be a part of
the Jones-Calzaghe undercard in a catchweight bout (144 pounds).
Judah is currently preparing his body to slim back down to 140 pounds, but did not want to rush the effort.
Im
working on my weight, Judah explained to espn.com. I started at 140
and mentally I know that is where I should be. Im planning to go back
there and dominate. I stay ready. Ill be ready. Im just here to show
my fans I am still dominant and I can put on good fights and give great
entertainment.
At press time, Judahs likely tune-up opponent will be Ernest Too Slick Johnson (18-2-1, 7 KOs).
If
Judah wins impressively, he would become a lucrative and fan-friendly
option for junior welterweight fighters Ricky Hatton, Paulie
Malignaggi, and Kendall Holt.
Lucian Bute Defends IBF Super-Middleweight Title Against Librado Andrade
This
Friday (October 24), Showtime will televise an exciting matchup between
undefeated IBF champ Lucian Bute (22-0, 18 KOs) and iron-chinned
brawler Librado Andrade (27-1, 21 KOs).
Bute
will be facing his stiffest test to date, and is aware that he may have
to switch tactics if Andrade shakes off his normally concussive punches.
I
know he is a tough fighter, Bute explains. But Im just as tough as
he is. Ive never lost a fight, let alone been knocked out. Id love to
knock him out, but a victory is a victory. As long as I walk out of
that ring still a champion Im happy.
Bute
is more skilled then Andrade, and that should see him through this
bout. But it remains to be seen if the Canadian KO artist will be able
to stand up to Andrades relentless pressure once Andrade walks through
his punches.
If you have Showtime, dont miss this one.
Throwback Fighter of the Week: Smokin Joe Frazier
While
Bernard Hopkins is proudly carrying on the Philly fighter mantra, no
one defines that tradition more than former heavyweight champion Joe
Frazier.
Turning pro in 1965 after an Olympic gold medal run, Frazier quickly sliced through the heavyweight ranks.
By
1966, Frazier began to known on the national scene after rising from
the canvas twice to gut out a tough decision over Oscar Bonavena, and a
vicious TKO of George Chuvalo. The latter featured the bout being
stopped after Fraziers punches dislodged Chuvalos eye socket.
Frazier continued his winning ways and finally gained recognition as the undisputed world champion in 1970 after a 5th round knockout of Jimmy Ellis.
Still,
Frazier had not won his title from the former champion, as Muhammad Ali
was stripped of his title in 1967 for refusing to enlist for the
Vietnam War.
After
destroying light-heavyweight champion Bob Foster in two rounds, Frazier
met Muhammad Ali in 1971 in the most anticipated bout in boxing
history, The Fight of the Century.
Taking
massive combinations and punishment in the early rounds, Frazier
continued pressuring Ali and took over the second half of the bout.
Powered by his bob and weave, low crouch and snapping left hook,
Frazier had Ali out on his feet in the 11th and scored a decisive 15th round knockdown to seal the decision.
The
fight was not without its price, as Frazier remained hospitalized for
weeks after the fight and never regained his pre-FOTC form.
After
two pedestrian title defenses in 1972, Frazier was brutally crushed by
George Foreman in 2 rounds, hitting the mat 6 times in the process.
He
fared better in the long awaited rematch with Ali in 1974, but
ultimately lost a close decision due to Alis controversial tactic of
holding Frazier behind the head to prevent him from landing the left
hook.
Frazier
bounced back with strong rematch KOs of Jerry Quarry and Jimmy Ellis,
but once again fell short when faced with his hated nemesis Muhammad
Ali.
In
what is widely considered the greatest heavyweight fight of all time,
Ali barely escaped the 1975 Thrilla in Manila with a 14th
round TKO when Fraziers corner stopped the bout. Ali to this day
claims he would have quit if Frazier came out for another round, and
states it was the closest Ive ever felt to death.
Completely spent as an elite fighter, Frazier was again bludgeoned by George Foreman in their 1976 rematch, losing by 5th round TKO.
After attempting a comeback in 1981 which resulted in draw, Frazier retired for good.
A first ballot Hall of Famer, Frazier made 7 title defenses and is the only man to hold a win over a near prime Muhammad Ali.
Joe Fraziers final record stands at 32-4-1, 27 KOs.

Don Cornelius, former long-time host of Soul Train, was arrested late Friday (October 17) night on suspicion of domestic violence.
According to early reports, Los Angeles police were called to Cornelius Hollywood Hills home after someone reported a loud domestic dispute.
The 72-year-old executive producer was taken into custody and subsequently booked for felony domestic violence.
After posting $50,000 bail, a judge ordered Cornelius to appear in court next month. At press time, authorities would not confirm who Cornelius is accused of assaulting.
Cornelius founded Soul Train in 1970 as an outlet to showcase the best music artists of African-American culture.
Throughout the shows first decade, the program was instrumental in popularizing new dances through its venerable Soul Train Line, and being a platform to illuminate legendary artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Barry White.
Into the 80s Soul Train extended its platform to Hip-Hop culture, giving the then fledgling art form much needed national exposure through artists such as Sugar Hill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J.
Some rappers, like De La Soul, criticized Cornelius as well, claiming that the lack of rap on the show in later episodes as due to the founders distaste for the music.
In 1993, Cornelius stepped down as host and continued working behind the scenes to keep the show afloat.
With no new tapings since 2006, Soul Trains website confirmed its cancellation on September 22, with Cornelius citing the Writers Guild of America strike as a primary reason.
At press time Don Cornelius could not be reached for comment.
The views expressed in this column are not the views expressed by AllHipHop.com.Are you really surprised that Danity Kane doesnt have five members anymore? Come on, lets be frank. You knew it was only a matter of time. The last two weeks have really been difficult for Danity Kane and their fans. Two members of the group were tossed out by Diddy (Aubrey ODay and D. Woods). And all I have to say is – Too bad so sad! I cant sit here and say that I am a huge fan of the girls or of the television series Making The Band, but with the recent drama surrounding it all my interest was peaked when I came across Cruise Control, a leaked song from one of the groups still standing members, Dawn Richard. In a recent interview with essence.com, Dawn Richard was asked about her pursuing a solo career and this is what she had to say, Its so interesting how the media chooses to interpret or report things. I have never said that I was pursuing a solo deal. I told someone that I have waited so long for my dream, and singing is my dream and has been for so long. I have done nothing on the side as far as solo projects; Im not sidestepping. I have totally been supportive of the groupthats my priority.Hmmmm ok. Well Dawn, I aint mad at you. That was the politically correct answer. And if thats true, ok. Maybe its Diddy thats pushing you to be a solo artist, and in the event that thats the case Im sure youre not going to stop him. After all, who would? And in the event that you do become a solo artist on Bad Boy, good luck. Im not alone when I take a look at the track record of Bad Boy artists and see that there is a curse. I mean really. Can you name one member or group past or present on the Bad Boy roster whos had long term success and longevity on the label? Seriously! Come on. Do I need state specifics? Faith, 112, Ma$e, New Edition, Carl Thomas, Total, The L.O.X, Black Rob, Shyne, Loon, Dream, Cheri Dennis! The list goes on and on. And I say its only a matter of time before Cassie, Young Joc, Gorilla Zoe and Day 26 part ways with Diddy. Yes, record labels have artists who flop everyday; thats the nature of the business. But there’s something about an artists plight over at Bad Boy that consistently crashes. Fortunately for Diddy hes been successful at all his other ventures, because Bad Boy has the tendency to make em and literally break em. After all, another point that Dawn made in her interview with essence.com was, At the end of the day, Im going to rock with the first priority, which is Danity Kane. Who knows what can happen, because Puff changes his mind every five seconds. Every five seconds? Ha ha! Maybe that explains the reason behind the curse. Diddy had no problem airing out some of Aubreys dirty laundry this week, so why not air out some of his. I respect him as a business man, but I think at times the failure of his artists on Bad Boy is over shadowed by him being successful on other plateaus. But it is what it is, and I aint hatin, Im just saying. Diddy called Aubrey promiscuous on last weeks episode of Making The Band. How many baby mamas does Diddy have that we know of? Need I say more? But back to the reason why I decided to pick Dawn Richard this week as my Sunday Selection…Dawn has stated that she never said that she was pursuing a solo career. Well lets say hypothetically she was, and that Cruise Control was her first single. How would you rate it? Hot or Not? Personally, I think its decent. Dawn uses the Auto-Tune and it takes away from her original sound and almost makes it hard to understand what shes singing, but the hook, the beat and the overall sound is ok. In the song she talks about putting a relationship on Cruise Control and just letting it ride, a concept I hope shes applying to her own relationship with Q from Day 26 because all relationships are a struggle. And Im sure its no coincidence that the song has the same song arrangement of Timbaland and Keri Hilsons The Way I Are, so much of todays music sounds alike Im not surprised. But Im going to leave it at that. Until next time yall enjoy this weeks Sunday Selection Cruise Control.
