THE DAY REPORT: PASSION

(You can now subscribe to RSS feed to this column at www.TheDayReport.com.  Thanks to James Doe for educating me on the technology and making it easy for me to implement!!)

“Success is getting what you want, and happiness is wanting what you get.”

-Warren Buffett, Billionaire

Passion is the undeniable love for something that keeps you getting back up every time you get knocked down.  Passion is the driving force that keeps you focused and on track when the odds seem insurmountable.  Passion is what keeps you going day after day even though it’s hard, and regardless of whether the money comes or not.  And if you don’t have passion for what you are doing, it’s hard to compete for any duration, because those who do have passion, will be able to work longer, harder, and smarter than you.

You can’t force passion, either you have it for something or you don’t.  It’s better to find something that makes you passionate and to pursue it, because it’s impossible to pick something randomly and then find the passion for it.  We’ve all heard the old adage: do what you love and the money will follow.  It’s also hard to be passionate about money in itself, although I know many, many people who love money.

The Love of Hip Hop

There are two major underlying reasons people get into the music business: either for the love of music, or for the money and fame.  If you are getting into this for the love of the music, your road may be longer to success, but will most likely be fruitful if you can stick it out.  The love and passion for the art form will keep you going when everything seems against you.  The creation of the music comes more easily when it’s based in love and passion.  The artist makes music that comes from inside of him or her, not based on what will sell.  Decisions are then based on passion and your career, rather than money and short term goals.

In art, since the beginning of time, all artists have dealt with the issue of art versus commerce.  Do you make art that is inside of you, or do you make art that you know will sell?  If an artist creates from what is inside of him or her, the creation is pure– based in emotion, passion, and feeling.  But then how does the artist eat and survive?  If an artist creates what he knows will sell, the creation is commercial, made with the intention to sell and to reach a wide audience.  It’s the difference between “art for art’s sake,” or art for sale.  Is music an art form or a business?  Very few people have succeeded at both…the Fugees spring to mind from the late 90s.  They made music that was classic, artistic, and that sold millions and millions of CDs.  Was “Laffy Taffy” art?  It’s not about one choice being right or wrong, although some people are very passionate about Hip Hop remaining an art form instead of a business.  They are about 20 years too late.

I have a close friend in Detroit who owns a record label.  He makes music that he feels good about.  When his artists make a song, he’s trying to create a classic.  He’s not just trying to make a hit record that will be hot in the club for the next 6 months, or that will get into regular rotation at radio.  I have another friend who is a rapper in Atlanta, and he is specifically trying to make a song that will blow up at radio the way Biggie’s “Hypnotize” did.  He wants fame and money.  His hope is to have a huge song and then capitalize on it by doing endorsement deals for products and commercials.  He’s thinking that maybe he can even get into TV and film through the fame his song creates.  To him, hip hop is a business, not an art form.  He’s not trying to positively impact the culture, he’s trying to feed his kids.  Neither of my friends are wrong, they just have different visions.

The Love of Money

Many folks jumped into the music business because they saw it as if it was the new drug game: a legal hustle that brought a high rate of return for a relatively small investment.  The risk of failure was kind of high, but if and when you hit big, you hit REALLY big.  The urban music industry, in its infancy, used to be run by people who were passionate about the music, cared about the sound of their records, and felt that if the artist wasn’t saying something important that it had no value.  Then the industry changed in the mid-90s, and the drug trade encroached into the business bringing deep pockets and lyrics that they wanted to hear: more superficial, entertaining lines (about partying, sex, expensive toys, spending loot, etc).  The problem with the industry becoming fueled by money is that the passion began to wane.

Why is passion so important?

Money is a good thing.  The love of money is even OK.  But being a slave to money is never good.  If you can be controlled by money, you are a w#### in the rawest sense.  People who are controlled by money will do ridiculous things just to get some—things they may even swear that they’d never, ever do…until confronted with the opportunity.  Would YOU sell your soul for money?

I used to work a corporate 9 to 5 job, and I was miserable.  I made a lot of money but I was not happy.  In March of 1992, I started Rap Coalition.  It was a tremendous risk and I had to put up half a million dollars of my own money to get started, knowing that I could very easily lose it all.  I didn’t care and went for it!  I have been happy almost every day since, regardless of the kind of day I’m having, regardless of whether I get paid or not, and regardless of how many hours I work each day (and I work mostly 16 hour days, 7 days a week).  But I love what I do, so it doesn’t matter.  I remember those unhappier days in corporate America, and I am thankful I am doing something that makes me happy.  And I am even more thankful that I can pay my bills from doing this–it took me 6 years to be able to make money in the music industry, and 10 years to get to a level of being able to support myself properly.  I am thankful I get paid to do something I am passionate about, and ecstatic that I don’t have to compromise my principles in order to make money.

In the 1980s, when rap first became commercial, no one was thinking about the money.  It was exciting because it was a new art form and there were very few rules.  The main rule was “don’t sell out.”  Others, who were willing to “sell out,” stepped in and made all of the money.  Today, the main rule seems to be capitalize and maximize all opportunities while retaining as much control and ownership as possible.  Is that so wrong?  The flip side to that is to allow someone else to pimp the culture and get rich off of something they don’t give a f### about (hence the 1980s and 90s in rap music).

And where does passion figure into all of this.  Can someone truly be happy making music that is disposable, just so they can earn enough money to buy a summer home in the Hamptons?  Can they hold their heads high when their little children are singing along to some mindless dribble that won’t matter to anyone a year from now?  Or is the goal to put those kids through private school, by any means necessary, and selling music is really just a job afterall?

I don’t have the answer to this one.  But I do know one thing: without being happy, there is no point.  Money buys a lot of s###, but it can’t buy happiness.  But for many it sure does buy a lot of distractions to keep you from realizing that.  Without passion, we can’t go as hard as we need to in order to succeed.  Passion is the driving force that leads to happiness.  Without it, I may as well just be selling shoes or Carpet Fresh.  I, for one, am thankful to have found my passion.  It makes getting up in the morning VERY easy.  And I remember all too well those days when it was not.

Philly Jock Kendra G. Encourages Girls ‘Not To Do It’

Philadelphia radio personality Kendra G has launched a new campaign in conjunction with her home station 100.3 the Beat encouraging young women to make a special promise to themselves.

The “Abstinence is Kool… I Am Not Doing It” program, launched by Kendra G on the air this week, encourages girls in high school and middle school to abstain from sex for an entire school year.

The girls are asked to take the pledge by sending in an email or video to Kendra G via the Beat’s website at www.1003thebeatphilly.com.

According to Kendra, recent statistics show that 43% of all high school students between 15-18 claim that they have had sex at least one.

While the percentage reflects a lower number than previous years, she believes it can be lower.

Kendra will also use her popularity on YouTube to extend the challenge beyond her city, encouraging teenage girls to join her in this initiative.

“Abstinence is Kool is a challenge that I am very passionate about, so passionate that I decided to take the challenge with my listeners,” says the 100.3 evening host. “Having a voice on the radio is a privilege and an honor. I enjoy the excitement that comes along with being a radio personality but knowing that I will be able to make a difference in the lives of my listeners makes me more excited”.

In Philadelphia, 100.3 The Beat is helping Kendra take the challenge once step further.

Each girl who takes the pledge will qualify for a chance to win an end of the year concert at her school.

Kendra G. originally launched her career in Connecticut on WZMX Hot 93.7 and has hosted shows in Buffalo, New York and in Chicago on Power 92.

“Love Lockdown” – The Remixes: Which Do You Like Best?

It’s ironic that as I write this piece, my neighbor upstairs happens to have “Love Lockdown” blasting so loud that I can hear the 808’s pounding like a heartbeat in my chest. A hit is a hit, and by no means am I surprised that this new single from Kanye West has caught the attention of people from all walks of life. It’s different; it’s unique. It’s Kanye West – the same guy who spares no expense to dare to be different. After all, Kanye appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show this week to debut his video for “Love Lockdown.” Not on MTV’s TRL (R.I.P.) or BET’s 106 and Park, but The Ellen Degeneres show! No one could have guessed that’s where they’d see this video for the first time, after all the average Hip-Hop fan is either in school or at work when the show airs, which makes one ponder –“What is Kanye up to now!”But anyway, while “Love Lockdown” is slowly climbing the charts and being played on radio stations around the world. The single has motivated other artists to make their own renditions. And if you’re a regular YouTube surfer, you’ve probably become familiar with some of the remixes to “Love Lockdown.” I have come across five in particular: Tonedeff, Royce Da 5’9, Trey Songz, Jin, and Mysto & Pizzi. In taking out the time to listen to each of these renditions I was moved by the work of Mysto & Pizzi the production duo out of Queens who put together a House Remix of “Love Lockdown.” Maybe it’s because I’m partial to House Music being from Chicago and all, but the other four remixes were average to me, even though I did find some humor in Royce Da 5’9’s version. But now that you know which rendition I prefer I’d like to know which one you like best. Take some time and check out “Love Lockdown” The Remixes.Remix #1: Tonedeff – “Warden” (“Love Lockdown” Remix)MC/Producer Tonedeff crafts his own version of “Love Lockdown” titled “Warden” which combines the 808’s of “Love Lockdown” minus the Auto-Tune and a verse with his signature speedy delivery:Remix #2: Royce Da 5’9 – “Shot Down” (“Love Lockdown” Remix)Royce Da 5’9 keeps the same instrumental and melody, adding gunshots and an audio bloodbath, as he sings about taking some lives:Remix #3: Trey Songz – “Love Lockdown” Remix (with Kanye West)Singer/Songwriter Trey Songz takes over the track after Kanye’s first verse, adding some anger and arrogance with lines like, “One of the best to do it; stick out my chest and do it. If Kanye West could do it; and they thought he was stupid. And that’s what they is; if they don’t f**k with this.”  Remix #4: Jin – “Love Lockdown” Remix (with Kanye West)Rapper Jin loops the intro to “Love Lockdown” and spits an extensive introductory verse that leads into the original:Remix #5: Mysto & Pizzi – “Love Lockdown” Electro MixQueens production duo Mysto & Pizzi add some synths and up the tempo on the original track, recreating it into an electro-dance mix with a Euro feel to it:Vote On Your Favorite:Poll Answers

Jay-Z Jocking Obama: Fair or Foul?

The opinions expressed in the following editorial are not necessarily those of AllHipHop.com, its employees, its associates or its assigns.Just like a pimped out  E F Hutton, when Shawn “Jay-Z ” Carter talks, people listen. And I’m not just talking about the boyz in tha ‘hood, I’m talking about the white collar boys in executive suites. With just one lyric, Jay-Z has the uncanny ability to change the direction of an entire entertainment industry. Shawn Carter is the urban personification of an Haratio Alger story: street corner drug dealer becomes a successful entrepreneur by rappin’ about being a street corner drug dealer. The stuff that urban legends are made of. That is why I have mixed emotions about Jay-Z stumpin’ for presidential candidate, Barack Obama via free rap concerts.Don’t get me wrong. Anytime a Hip-Hop artist raps about anything other than derrieres and drug deals, I’m automatically a fan. So, I ain’t hatin’ on “Jigga”, as he is affectionately known by rap connoisseurs. However, what bothers me most when rap stars become “political activists” are the contradictions and missed opportunities.Let’s face it. Politics is really one big orgy and if you flick on the lights and pull the sheets back on any political bed, a lot of strange bedfellows will go scrambling for the nearest exit. However, Hip-Hop is somewhat different, as it is heavily marketed as the voice of urban youth and many Black kids do look up to rappers as role models, for better or mostly worst. This is not the first time that a rapper has endorsed a political candidate, rap pioneers Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 once kicked some funky rhymes  in 1984 in support of Rev. Jesse Jackson’s first presidential run. However, despite using the bleeped out “p” word (p###) on the rap classic, “The Message” their music was basically, family friendly.  Also, few could argue about the political awareness of rappers of the late 80’s and early 90’s such as Public Enemy and Sister Souljah, as they were often under fire not only for their lyrics but their strong political stances. This is not so with today’s multi-millionaire rap pundits.Hence, Hip-Hop’s political hypocrisy.Today’s Hip-Hop artists are business men and the only presidents that they are concerned about are the dead presidents that are on the face of dollar bills. To borrow from a sample from Jay Z’s street classic “Dead Presidents , ” I’m out for presidents that represent me…” Hip-Hop is no longer the voice of inner city streets as it was a generation ago, it is now the voice of Wall Street and somehow tales of extravagant “ghetto fabulous living” go over real big with the marketing departments at multi national entertainment corporations.  ‘The lifestyles that Carter and some of the 21st century, commercially successful Hip Hop artists rap about are the lives that the economically privileged in the Hamptons live but the struggling youth in economically depressed neighborhoods give their lives trying to achieve. So I have to wonder who is out there promoting Obama-ism, the Jay-Z who was just another black kid with big dreams from the hood 20 years ago or the multi-millionaire business man, former CEO of Def Jam Records and part owner of the NJ Nets, Shawn Carter? We can’t expect the members of the Hip-Hop Millionaire Boys Club to have the same political and economic interests of the struggling masses still trapped in “the ghetto.” It must be noted that many of the undergound, noncommercial/politically conscious Hip Hop artists are rollin’ with the Green Party, this year, courtesy of the organizing efforts of Hip-Hop activist and VP candidate, Rosa Clemente. Also, the Jay-Z’s and Sean “Puff Daddy/Diddy” Combs of the world, two of the signers of the recent Obama endorsement letter, “Open Letter to Young America” have the ability to effect the lives of more black youth in one week than the Obama administration can do in four years. Suppose, Jay-Z with his many CD releases over the last decade would have released one strictly “political” album dealing with social problems and solutions? What impact would that have had on the millions of Jay Z followers around the country? Suppose during the last decade he had used his standing room only concert appearances to politicize his millions of fans instead of giving them tales of crack deals and misogyny? I think it is safe to say that the political consciousness of black youth would have been very different than it is, today.Hip-Hop politicians remind me of the two little pigs who built their cribs out of cheap straw and sticks instead of spending the necessary time and effort to build a sturdy house made of brick. If they spent more time working on building a solid social and economic infrastructure instead of blingin’ and poppin’ bottles of champagne at the club, then they wouldn’t have to worry about the big bad Republican wolf blowing their houses down every four years! The ‘hood doesn’t need voter registration, tha hood needs political education. But until we, as a community, demand more political and social responsibility from artists that we support with our dollars, in and out of political season, to quote from the “Jigga Man,” himself..”Can’t knock the hustle.”Paul Scott, “the Hip Hop TRUTH Minista,” is a writer and activist in Durham NC.  His blog is http://www.nowarningshotsfired.com To reach Scott contact (919) 451-8283 or in**@*****************ed.com

Pac Man Jones Investigated For Brawl At Ludacris Party

NFL cornerback Adam “Pacman’ Jones has once again found himself embroiled in legal controversy, as the troubled cornerback is being investigated for his role in a late night brawl with his own bodyguard.

The incident occurred last night (October 8) at the Joule Hotel in Dallas, which was the location of a Ludacris-hosted party to promote the Mark Wahlberg movie Max Payne.

Eyewitnesses report that police were called after an allegedly intoxicated Jones began to have a heated argument with his bodyguard, who was hired by the Dallas Cowboys to keep the newly reinstated cornerback out of trouble.

Jones is then alleged to have threatened the bodyguard and began removing jewelry in preparation for a fight.

By the time police arrived, the brawl had begun taking place in the bathroom, where witnesses reported hearing punches being landed and glass breaking.

A security guard and police officers subsequently pulled the two men apart.

According to the bodyguard, he was simply using the u##### when Jones struck him from behind, prompting the unidentified bodyguard to defend himself.

Immediately after giving a brief statement to police, Jones fled the scene without paying the hotel tab.

Since neither party nor the hotel filed a complaint, Dallas police Lieutenant Anthony William explained that no arrests could have been made despite the property damage.

This past August, Adam “Pacman” Jones was reinstated from his April 2007 suspension by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodellin.

As of last year, Jones has been arrested six times; most notably following a Las Vegas shooting that paralyzed one individual and left three wounded.

At press time, the Cowboys organization and the NFL have not commented on whether Jones will face any disciplinary action.

T.I. Makes History With New Album; Tops Charts

Atlanta rap star T.I. has taken his hit making streak to the next level with a historic showing on this week’s Billboard albums and singles charts.

The rapper’s latest release, Paper Trail, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with 568,000 copies sold in its first week.

The ranking, which was echoed on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Top Rap Albums and Top Digital Albums charts, marks T.I.’s third consecutive number one album behind his last two platinum-certified albums, 2006’s King and 2007’s T.I. VS. T.I.P.

The feat also resulted in T.I.’s label, Atlantic Records, receiving its biggest sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

Paper Trail’s showing was one of two achievements for T.I., who made an impact on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart with his latest single, “Live Your Life.”

The song, which features R&B/Pop vocalist Rihanna, made the biggest ever one-week leap on the chart as it rose from it’s No. 80 spot last week to this week’s position at No. 1.

The move top’s the previous record holder, also held by T.I. for the single “Whatever You Like,” which made the jump to No. 1 from No. 71 the week of Sept. 6.

“Whatever You Like” remained at No. 1 until it was knocked off by “Live Your Life.”

As a result, T.I. became the first artist to replace himself at No. 1 since the feat was accomplished by Usher in 2004.

In addition to topping the Billboard singles chart, “Live Your Life” had the biggest-ever first-week digital singles sales in history with downloads of nearly 335,000.

A video for the platinum-certified track, currently in post-production, is slated to premiere on music video outlets in the coming weeks.

T.I.’s chart success comes just days after he received a special plaque to celebrate passing the 2 million friend mark on his official MySpace page.

The entertainer is currently preparing to take the stage for this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards.

T.I. is nominated for three awards, including Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year and MVP of the Year.

The third annual BET Hip-Hop Awards will take place Oct. 18 at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta.

The event will air at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 on BET.

Outside of music, T.I. continues to make movies as an actor with a recent appearance on HBO’s Entourage and a starring role in the upcoming Screen Gems film, Bone Deep.

Fans can look for the rapper to invade the small screen in 2009 with what is described as an inspirational documentary series for MTV.

The currently untitled show will center on T.I.’s life on probation in the year leading up to his impending year-long prison sentence.

The rapper, who is serving 1,000 hours of community service after pleading guilty to federal weapons charges, is expected to complete his sentence in March when he begins serving his sentence.

ALBUM REVIEW: Michelle Williams – Unexpected

While the curse that seems to haunt the

females that surround Beyonce was seemingly lifted by Solange’s sophomore

effort, the “other” Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams picked a good time

to conjure up her first mainstream project. Instead of continuing with

Gospel releases, Michelle tackled the world of Club/Dance with

Unexpected. Maybe in an effort to stay out of Beyonce’s way completely,

the Euro-pop album is less Nelly Furtado and more Kylie Minogue.

Vocally, Michelle has always demonstrated

greater skills than fellow group member Kelly. Here, she shows spurts

of that vocal superiority in the ballads “The Greatest,” “Too

Young For Love,” and “Stop This Car.” In others (“Till The End

of the World,” “Private Party”) she gets by on focusing on the

beat without and a lot of Auto-Tune.

What makes the album as a whole a bit

hard to grasp is that Michelle doesn’t have a voice built for this

particular Pop sub-genre. “Her voice would have been easy to overlook

if those club tempo songs were crafted particularly well but they are

only memorable after numerous listens.

The issues may go beyond her voice to

the core of the project as it may be hard for some to party to music

from someone who has recorded two gospel albums and the standout moments

still lie in her slow tracks. In terms of a Destiny’s Child solo effort,

though, Michelle came out over Beyonce’s other back-up singer by actually

crafting a memorable project, even if it takes a couple of listens to

sink in.

Rapper Paris Unveils $10,000 Scholarship With New Album

Socially-conscious lyrics and beats will not be the only things included with Paris’ upcoming album Acid Reflex.

The Bay Area rapper/activist will offer a chance for fans to win a $10,000 award after purchasing the CD in stores or online.

The award will be redeemable as a scholarship towards a post-high school education or housing expenses after purchasing the release in stores or online.

The contest will center around three randomly placed tickets that can be found in copies of Acid Reflex.

Winners will be notified after opening the CD via a message stating “Congratulations! You’ve won $10,000 for either school expenses or housing!” as well as details for claiming the prize.

Non-winning CD packages will not contain notification of any kind.

The chance to make life easier for students amid rising prices across the board served as a motivator for Paris, who could relate to those struggling to maintain a normal way of life in spite of the tight economy.

“We’re living in the hardest economic times in recent memory, and this is a perfect way for me to try to ease the pain for my supporters,” the rapper told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “I realize that money is tight for many people and that music is becoming less and less of a priority when everything is rising but wages. This is not only a perfect way for me to express my gratitude to those who continue to support me, but to emphasize both the importance of higher education and the need to continue to support art of substance.”

Paris’ Guerrilla Funk Recordings is preparing to release Acid Reflex, which is slated to hit stores Oct. 28.

The album will feature appearances from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Parliament/Funkadelic frontman George Clinton, in addition to Public Enemy leader Chuck D.

Among the topics addressed are black-on-black crime and violence, police brutality and war as well as politics and what Paris calls “the need for more of an equal balance between positive and negative influences in entertainment.”

Murs: Presidential MC

Veteran West Coast rapper Murs has been an underground Hip-Hop icon for over a decade. Living Legends, collabs with 9th Wonder, the Paid Dues festival; stuff like that. However, a recent signing to Warner Bros. has taken the artist to new adventures as he seeks to expand upon his existing fanbase. Murs for President, which was released on September 30th, is an album that shows this artist in a brand new light. Although the style and message is still the same, some longtime fans might not be used to hearing Murs over music by Kid Frost’s producing son Scoop Deville, Nottz, DJ Khalil, Terrace Martin and others.  Murs took the time to speak about this new sound from him and to share his thoughts about how some longtime fans might feel about it. He also gives AllHipHop.com the inside scoop on his upcoming project with producer Terrace Martin called The Melrose.  Oh yeah, it’s also not wise to make fun of his hair. AllHipHop.com: I’m looking at the production credits on your new CD and the thing that stands out is the diversity of producers that you have on this one like Scoop Deville, Terrace Martin & Snoop Dogg, and even DJ Quik mixing down the album. You were looking to broaden your sound?Murs: I now have access to the sound that I wanted. I’m a West Coast kid and I grew up on gangster rap and West Coast music. I am diverse but I haven’t had the budget or resources to do the album that I wanted – that sounds like me – that capacitates all of me musically as a man. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a movie called Chasing Amy, but it’s about a lesbian who gets with a guy, and the guy is kind of nervous about it. The girl is like, “You should be comfortable because I didn’t just date men my whole life looking for the right one. I dated men and women – and I finally found you. So you are the best human for me on earth.” I feel like that about this album. I got to sit down with Three 6 Mafia, Kwame, DJ Premier, RZA, DJ Quik – I got to go all around the world and these 14 songs are the one’s that I feel that represent me the best. The songs on the album are the ones that I felt were the best one’s with the producers that I worked with. Murs “Lookin’ Fly” VideoAllHipHop.com: Are you worried about your existing fan-base not accepting a more diversified sound from you?Murs: Look at my hair man! I don’t care what anybody thinks – I really don’t give a f***! I’m not worried about it. I think that me and my fans have a relationship that is built on honesty and trust, and I’ve always been honest with my fanbase and I think they have grown to trust me to do what I think is dope. A lot of them doubted but I’ve been getting MySpace messages saying it’s just like my other albums but it sounds bigger. If you are truly a Murs fan from the beginning this album will not change anything that you feel about me. I am the same guy, just with different beats. Like food, everybody has different tastes in beats but none of these tracks are poorly made. I know that all of these producers put their heart and soul in to their work – the same way that I put my heart and soul in to my work. If you don’t like the beats than it’s just not your taste – it’s not poorly made or with the intentions of selling out or whatever. AllHipHop.com: With this album I’ve noticed that you are kind of like a bridge between the L.A. underground Hip-Hop and mainstream scenes. There’s been a big gap between the two for a long time. Murs: That’s a dream come true because like I said, that’s been me my whole life. I listen to Suga Free, Compton’s Most Wanted, DJ Quik to Aceyalone and Freestyle Fellowship. Also other artists like The DOC, King Tee, Xzibit and Tha Dogg Pound. It’s good to finally bridge that gap. Some of the gangster rappers might not think that the backpack kids have love for them or some of the backpack rappers might not get to the other side as well. I think that it’s a good thing and I hope that it’s a bridge that we solidify and keep going. On the East Coast they have the Talib’s, Common’s and Kanye’s that f*** with each other. On the West Coast, we don’t really get that chance. I’m trying to pioneer that. I’ll open up a show for Snoop Dogg and Kurupt or Quik will come out and do a song for me and then I’ll go out there for Quik – hopefully we can keep stuff like that going.    Murs “Better Than The Best” VideoAllHipHop.com: You have a lot of good messages for the youth in your music and I’m concerned that there will be a lot missing out on it because radio might not catch on to your stuff. What are your thoughts on the lack of support you receive from radio?Murs: The funny thing is that a lot of the DJ’s that are up at the radio stations are independent Hip-Hop fans. They don’t want to play the garbage that they are playing. When I go to the stations, it’s a matter of me getting my song with Scoop Deville who also has a single with Snoop Dogg – to show them that we can play this Murs song in the mix with everything else. It’s about giving them tools. Now they have no excuse because I have Warner Bros. behind me to talk to their bosses to say that it’s ok. It’s not the DJ’s that decide what to play – The Baka Boyz, Big Von at KMEL, DJ Reflex, DJ Rafiki. All of these DJ’s are underground Hip-Hop fans. Big Boy at Power 106, who is now nationally syndicated, used to be a bodyguard for The Pharcyde – and he’s a huge underground Hip-Hop head. I think the radio will get behind it. You just have to give them something that they can work with. If I would have stayed on the independent label then they wouldn’t be able to put me in the mix. Now I am in with Warner Bros. and they have a working relationship with the radio stations. AllHipHop.com: Looking at your traveling schedule on your MySpace and you are out all over the place every single day. It really brings to mind your new song, “The Road is my Religion,” off of your new album. Tell us about your road travels. Murs: I love traveling the United States. I like to meet people and the fans. Right now I am on an in-store tour and for some reason a lot of rappers don’t do that. I’m a regular dude and I like to meet people. It kind of kills it for people to think that I’m above someone or that I think that I’m better than someone else. I appreciate you as a fan appreciating my music. Just as much as you love my music, I love you for enabling me to do what I love. That makes me want to get out there and do the songs that you love and doing them with all of my heart. People see me perform and I sweat, I’m jumping and screaming – because I want to give back what you guys are giving to me – which is my ability to live my dream and make music for a living. So if that means that me and my mom are out here and we are doing in-stores every day in every city and I’m signing CD’s for hours or taking pictures, it doesn’t matter  because I’m making a real connection with people and that’s what counts. I have so much fun meeting kids and hearing the stories they have. I love being on the road and you can fall in love 8 or 10 times [laughs]. Everybody misses home but this is part of my job. As long as I don’t have to get on an airplane and go through airport security, I am really happy. AllHipHop.com: Word is you are working on a brand new project with producer Terrace Martin called The Melrose. Can you tell us anything about that?      Murs: I don’t wan to take anything away from my new album Murs for President, but The Melrose is going to be special. Me and Terrace are similar. He’s been working with Snoop Dogg and them since he was 14 and I’ve been working in the L.A. underground with people like Bigga-B and Rob-One since I was 14. We’ve been parallel of each other coming up on two different sides of the L.A. scene. That bridge that you were talking about earlier? Me and Terrace Martin are that bridge. And Melrose Blvd. is kind of like that bridge in L.A. You can see a little bit of everybody on Melrose. You can see thugs, cholos, Bloods, Crips, drifters, Armenian dudes, and so forth. The last time I got into a fight was with some Armenian dudes on Melrose in the middle of the street – it’s just crazy. Melrose is that bridge though. If you want to see hot girls to hot shoes – you’ve got to go to Melrose. The Melrose album is going to be the bridge – and it’s going to be fun and positive because everything I do is fun and positive. It might be a little vulgar because Terrace and I both really like women [laughs]. I really like comic books and he really likes pitbull dogs but we can both agree that we really like women. I’ve been going to his house and having fun with the project just hanging with him and Bad Lucc of the Western Union. AllHipHop.com: Murs, any last words for our audience?Murs: Yeah, stop talking about my hair – that’s gay for guys to be talking about another man’s looks. Also, f**k every rapper other rapper out there! No wait, I shouldn’t say that. Aw f**k it, I’ll say it – F**k every rapper out there [laughs].

TODAY’S RUMORS!

I’M SORRY!

YO! Today is going to be one crazy hodge podge of stuff. So, check out this rumor day and ride with me…lol!

SO. I am going to start the day off with A STORY.

Delaware is a great place to life so let me tell you about something that happened just yesterday.

A man was about taking the bus from work. This dude is a regular dude in every way shape and form. And, his day looked as if it was going to end like every other one. A car was parked in the bus stop and all hell broke loose… A man jumped out of the car and ran up on the first man and started to scream on him in front of everybody! The second man was like “You better love me or of leave me alone. I can’t continue to do this like this! You have to claim me or I am going to tell Sarah.” I don’t know if Sarah was the name used, but the dude was stunned. His DL lover was outing him in front of about 150 people on Rodney Square on King Street in Wilmington DE! The man was soooooooo totally humiliated. He basically went through life under the auspice that he was a heterosexual male. Apparently he attempted to break it off or something. I don’t know, but dude was totally beside himself with embarrassment.

LMAO!

KANYE WEST IS…DOING HIS THING

Apparently, Ellen is the No. 1 daytime talk show and Kanye wanted to tap further into middle America. See the performance on the show below! Also Click here for his new song, “HEARTLESS!” I like this better than “Love Lockdown.”

Speaking of Kanye, what do you think of the new 50 Cent song? Here it is, right HERE.

BLACK WALL STREET ARREST, RELEASE AND CLEAN UP?

From what I understand Nu Jerzy Devil, one of The Game’s homies, was a partner with this guy named John Abby aka Johnny Hooks in this label Livelihood. Rumor has it. Hooks got arrested for money laundering a ways back. Apparently, he owned or operated out of te Black Wall Street / Livelihood studio in Florida Ave around Atlantic City. I heard he is all home how and things are looking much better. The people that were running the studio while he was gone are now gone…services no longer need or something. Its like Yung Berg’s dark skinned twin – you touch down, you touch down.

LIL KIM GETS SUED

If you were on AllHipHop’s Alert list, you would have gotten this yesterday.

Rapper Lil’ Kim has been hit with a $2 million dollar lawsuit, amidst claims she tried to exit her contract with a fledgling entertainment company. Brookland Media, which was launched by famed Hip-Hop producers The Trackmasters (Tone and Poke), filed the lawsuit in New York County Court. The lawsuit accuses Lil’ Kim of breaching a one-year contractual agreement by demanding a more lucrative deal. According to the lawsuit, Kim refused to perform unless Brookland agrees to a number of requests, including demands to have Wyclef and Akon added as producers. In addition to withholding a $200,000 payment to full free Kim from her contract with Atlantic Records, Brookland won an injunction, temporarily preventing Lil’ Kim from negotiating with other record labels.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Just so you know, the NJ government is jonsin’ for Assatta Shakur! She was accused of murdering a New Jersey police officer. She’s now in Cuba. She maintains her innocence and so do many in the hip-hop community.

I don’t know if I’m late on this, but is Danity Kane’s Aubrey pregnant? I just saw what seemed to be a picture of her pregnant.

That chump McCain wouldn’t and didn’t shake Barack’s hand after the Debate. Sore loser! See it below.

Donna Brazile lets it be KNOWN! Click here, because we are not going to the back of the bus.

What do you think of Beyonce’s new song, “Put a Ring on It.” I know the babes are gonna go crazy. It sure did take Jay plenty time to do that, eh?

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES PART 2

Shout out to T.I. He debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Chart this week is selling 569k of Paper Trail. Not bad. Jim Jones might want to just…fall back a lil’ bit.

Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein is now home. He and others are going to partake in an event (concert) to raise memorial funds for the victims of the fatal plane crash. Only he and Travis Barker survived.

We’ve heard this before. Usher and Tomeka have allegedly separated and are no longer living together. Read more below…

Richard Fuld, the disgraced chief of Lehman Brothers, was punched in the face in the office gym on Sunday amid the bank’s collapse. I heard he took about $480 million in that break down. He was knocked out COLD, I might add. No Kimbo – out cold.

RANDOM QUOTES

New York from Flavor of Love is hating on “Punk” and Jennifer Hudson. Could it be that she didn’t get Flav?

“He’s really loving being Mr. Jennifer Hudson. I think he’s loving the lavish things she brings to his life, he’s seeing the world due to Jennifer’s success. Can you love this person if they lose all of this tomorrow? She needs to find out. I just hope people are marrying each other for the right reasons. It’s a mixed match, it won’t work. He’ll be in her shadow like Al Reynolds was to Star Jones, like Stedman Graham is to Oprah.”

Blu, the underground Cali rapper (Not Cantrell), almost signed to Death Row…well Suge wanted him (Same thing!):

“My cousin was engineering at Death Row and he played the CD for Suge right when he got out [of prison], and had already signed Left Eye and Crooked [I]. My boy told me, just come with me and we’ll get signed by either Suge or Roc-A-Fella.”

Nothing like some good old Diva Beef. Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin are fighting.

Tina said:

“Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one [only Queen] … that’s how queens are.”

Here is Aretha’s response (USA Today):

“…with respect to her statement concerning my ego (in saying,) clearly she was talking about herself as she described herself as the ‘Queen of Rock’ and saying ‘that’s what Queens do’ — particularly since she does not have a clue as to who I am in view of the fact that we have never met. I never figured her to resort to tacky press just to sell a few tickets.”

SARAH PALIN WANTS TO HELP ALASKA IN A WAR ON AMERICA?

There have been all sorts of things said about Barack, from Rev. Wright to him being supposedly Muslim to linked to terrorists.

Man, they are saying the Palin was fully prepared to infiltrate the US and get Alaska set up as its own nation! This is wild! Check it out right here! Sarah Palin and her spouse were trying (or are trying) to get Alaska as an independent NATION! Wow.

CLASSIC CLIP – MAN SHAKE OBAMA’S HAND

FIRST: SHELZ!

Trick Daddy Shows You His Miami.

The Straight From the Projects series of DVD’s has a new release on the cyber shelves. The brand that released stories about M.O.P and C-Murder now have a documentary featuring Trick Daddy which chronicles his visiting the Miami areas he called home prior to becoming a household name.

40 Glocc Explains His Issue

While I do take exception with some of his comments (maybe that comes from my ignorance of gang culture) I can say that I understand his point. It would be nice to see more thoughtful behavior, but I don’t rule the world…. Yet.

Usher and the Wifey Again Reported as Split.

Well, I know this surfaced a month or so back and folks in the know disputed every allegedly false detail, but Sandra Rose is now saying that the couple is definitely not together. According to her source, there doesn’t seem to be much hope for reconciliation as Usher has been spotted with other women and the only reason a divorce is not in the works is because he’s concerned about how it will affect his image. It was also suggested that Tameka has been quiet about the break up because she’s still hoping Usher will change his mind and come back to her. I guess we will be seeing round 2 of the denials shortly.

Madonna Un-invites Sarah Palin From Her Party.

Yeah, yeah, yeah…. Madonna isn’t Hip Hop, but check how she goes off on Palin and then attempts a seriously insincere apology.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: LADY DRAMA!

Nas and Kelis are fine…

Last night Nas and Kelis performed If I Ruled the World at some show… So maybe the sex tape fiasco is over with! Either way I love the two of them together and I would hate to think I would have to look up to Jay Z and Beyonce for love inspiration!

Lady Dramas Food for thought:

Isn’t the notion of grown ass men arguing over whose swagger is better just a tad bit homoish?

Superhead was included on a list of celebs who endorse Barack Obama… Since has Superhead been a celebrity? and furthermore why would she be included on a list that attracts voters?

Wayne had a b day bash at Mansion in Miami and as a present received a Louis Vuitton suitcase stacked with a million bucks… Now that a milli for real!  Don’t believe me….

Love me or leave me alone I’m out!

ILL PICS!

I love this picture, but I don’t know what to make of it.

Alicia K went shopping and looked MAGnificent.

Diddy hurt his arm but still made it to the Madonna show.

No, it is not Halloween yet…Michael Jackson and kid were out shopping or something. Shopping for masks…who knows.

ARETHA AND TINA, WE LOVE YOU – NOW BE QUEENS!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!
