Sunday Selection: Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy” vs. “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”

Two words, she’s back! And if all the other chicks in the game didn’t put their music out prior to now, it’s a wrap. You will be overshadowed by the sights and sounds of Mrs. Carter. This week we were graced with two highly anticipated singles by Beyoncé, “If I Were a Boy” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” I must admit both of them are FIRE. As we watch her continue to blossom into one of the most talented and successful icons of our generation, you have to admit – Beyoncé just gets better with time.First up: “If I Were a Boy” is one of the best ballads I’ve heard in a while. As usual Beyoncé has transformed words on paper into music that women everywhere can connect with. It has no boundaries and is simply easy listening. The overall theme of the song touches upon if a man could relate to woman’s overall understanding, things would be different. But since that doesn’t typically happen, women have to accept and get over the painful notion that they won’t live the fairytale lives they are sold as little girls. If I Were A Boy – BeyonceOne might say that the title, the concept and video for “If I Were A Boy” bears a similarity to the song “Like a Boy” by R&B sensation Ciara, but after listening to it thoroughly and then watching the video – there is NO comparison. And I’m sure someone somewhere is saying, ‘Beyoncé stole the idea from Ciara,’ and I’ll admit I was guilty of thinking that at first. But let’s be frank here, even if Bey did bite it – so what. Beyoncé did it better. No disrespect to Ciara, but Beyoncé’s version is more mature and the concept is better presented and timeless. Ten years from now on Urban, Urban AC, Jazz, and Adult Contemporary radio stations this song will still be a hit while Ciara’s “Like a Boy” will be a mere memory on the shelves collecting dust. Second, in “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” I think Beyoncé is throwing up her middle finger to the last guy who let her fall through the cracks and didn’t realize her value and worth. This is another classic anthem for the ladies, and I’m sure it will blast in the clubs and on the radio while the chorus will serve as a chant that motivates women to high tail it to the dance floor.Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) – BeyonceIf I had to choose which one of these songs I enjoyed more it would be, “If I Were A Boy” even though “Singe Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” is my jam too. Which one grabs you? Let me know.Until next time, y’all enjoy this week’s Sunday Selections – “If I Were A Boy” and Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It).Poll Answers

Rappers Talk Economy, Women During BET Panel Discussion

In light of America’s current economic crisis and next month’s historic presidential election, BET Networks announced today (October 10) plans to host two panel discussions next weekend at Clark Atlanta University.

The first discussion, “Get Your Money Right,” will aim to engage young people on the importance of financial literacy in their college and early professional careers.

Topics to be covered include repairing/understanding credit scores, asset and wealth management, vehicle financing, the basics of banking, and home ownership.

Assisting in these discussion are a diverse array of Hip-Hop artists and entrepreneurs, such as Ludacris, Russell Simmons, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Fat Joe, Yung Berg, Brian Michael-Cox, Monica, Gorilla Zoe, and 106 & Park’s Terrence and Rosci.

The panel will commence on Friday October 17 from 5:00-7:00PM.

The second session on Saturday October 18 entitled “Fly Girls Vote: Hip-Hop Women for Change,” centers on the powerful role female voters historically play in elections, and how that power can be translated to the women of Hip-Hop culture.

Running from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM and hosted by pioneer MC Lyte, the discussion will first frame the potential of today’s female Hip-Hoppers through the lens of history.

Models to be reviewed include Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and more current examples in Shirley Chisholm, Sister Souljah, and Michelle Obama.

Confirmed so far for the growing panel list are cultural critic/journalist Michaela Angela Davis, Brown University professor of Africana Studies Tricia Rose, and activist Moya Bailey.

Also featured will be clips of the award-winning documentary Chisholm 72: Unbought and Unbossed, which details Shirley Chisholm’s historic 1972 bid to be the first black woman elected president.

Immediately following will be short Q&A session with director Shola Lynch and journalist Lola Ogunnaike.

Ecstatic about the valuable wealth of information being given, BET Networks Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Debra Lee marveled at the potential number of young lives that will be changed for the better.

“We’re so excited to bring the BET Hip-Hop Awards back to Atlanta for the third year in a row, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about partnering with these organizations for these timely and important panel discussions about financial literacy and the role women of color play in politics,” Lee explained to AllHipHop.com. “BET Networks has always had a strong commitment to educating and empowering our audience, and these two forums will provide our audience with a unique and engaging opportunity to discuss and learn about two of the most critical issues of today.”

Both panels are free to the public and will precede the BET Hip-Hop Awards being held Saturday night October 18 at the Atlanta Civic Center.

OUT OF BOUNDS:The Pacman Plummeteth! Week 6 Picks & More!

Reports came out late Wednesday night that Adam “Pacman” Jones was involved in an altercation. ALLHipHop had the story up the next day with details explaining that the incident took place at the Joule Hotel in Dallas, after an event that was hosted by Ludacris, promoting the new Max Payne movie. You can read Ismael AbduSalaam’s report by clicking here.

I read the comments in Ismael AbduSalaam’s report of the incident. I’ve read the opinions of what other sports writers have written, and based on the comments from the readers of ALLHipHop and other sites, many are quick to get the man banned from the NFL. Yes, I know his track record speaks for it’s self, and I understand why he would be found guilty before he’s proven innocent. So forgive me if this week’s picks are shorter than usual, but I want to touch on this situation because this will be the hot topic for the remainder of the week.

First, why did you even attend the event Pacman? You were warned to stay away from situations like these the moment you were partially reinstated into the league and when you became a Cowboy. Yes, you have to make appearances at certain events because of your status as a celebrity, but when it comes to your situation, you have to choose a little better. Whether you realize it or not, you’re a target, and past evidence has proven that you can’t handle yourself in public without there being an altercation of some sorts.

Secondly, why in the hell were you playing “grab ass” with one of your assigned bodyguards in the bathroom of all places? According to the bodyguard, some “kidding around” and “playfulness” between himself and the player resulted in a brief scuffle in a restroom. To me, that sounds as though the bodyguard is taking the fall so that Pacman doesn’t get in any more trouble with the league. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. In this case, it’s all fun and games until someone is suspended or banned from the NFL.

So what will happen to Pacman? Will the NFL ban Jones? My answer to that is, I don’t know. We are to believe that one more screw up from Jones would result in immediate dismissal from the NFL, and this was that “screw up”. The Cowboys have done their own investigation and have determined that the situation is closed and that the terms of Pacman’s contract were not violated.

Therefore, the Cowboys will not punish Jones for this latest altercation, but the same can’t be said about the “Eliot Ness” of the NFL.

The NFL and Commissioner Goodell  will investigate this situation further, and Jones will receive a punishment. What type of punishment he will receive remains to be seen. Goodell has to punish Pacman, a precedent has been set. Goodell has set a “no tolerance” precedent when it comes to off the field incidents where the authorities are involved. We saw it with Chris Henry, we saw it with Tank Johnson, and now we’re going to see it again with Pacman.

Despite the Cowboys efforts to try to salvage this situation, this may have been the last straw. If that’s the case, Pacman is most likely gone from the league for the remainder of the season and that’s the best thing for him right now.

As much as I want to see Jones stay in the NFL and work through all of this, I think it’s time for him to go. He needs a ban from the NFL at least for a year. No NFL, no CFL, no Arena Football. Nothing with the words “foot” or “ball” should be associated with Jones for an entire year. There are distractions and temptations off the field that can hurt a player. When it comes to Pacman, off the field distractions are like crack to Pookie, it keeps “calling him and calling him” and that’s not good at all.

His off the field distractions don’t just affect him, but his teammates, and most importantly the fans. If it becomes known that, he initiated this last altercation, a lot of people will be hurt.

Numerous people, who have had their own issues as athletes, have come his defense; their creditability will be questioned. So will that of his teammates who have defended him and the fans that have supported him. They may claim that he’s a better person through their account, but after this last incident, it looks as though he hasn’t learned to make better choices.

They say “you learn something new every day”, well let’s hope Adam “Pacman” Jones learns something new soon before things get worse.

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week for Week 07

Poll Answers

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week

For the first time, we have a tie for the Game of the Week and they are both in the 4pm time slot. Therefore, without further ado, here they are:

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week, #1

Sunday, 10/12/08, 4pm

Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) at Denver Broncos (4-1)

Invesco Field, Denver, CO

The Bronco’s high-powered offense is too much for the Jags’ 21st ranked defense. Although the Jags are moving the ball on the ground on offense, their defense will not be able to keep up with the Broncos’ offense.  Jay Cutler is playing good football by making smart throws and managing the game well on the field. Look for another “Mile High” win for the Broncos this Sunday.

My Pick: Broncos

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week, #2

Sunday, 10/12/08, 4pm

Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) at San Francisco 49ers (2-3)

Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA

Although the Eagles have dropped two in a row, they’re facing off against a Niner’s squad that’s ranked 21st on both offense and defense. Mental mistakes are killing the 49ers on both offense and defense and look for the Eagles to exploit the 49ers weaknesses. In addition, the Eagles need a win bad and they know this is the right opportunity to grab one. Look for the Eagles to take it to the 49ers’ offense and walk out of Candlestick with the win.

My Pick: Eagles

Here are the rest of the games for Week 06 in the NFL.

Sunday, 10/12/08, 1pm games

Oakland Raiders (1-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-3)

Superdome, New Orleans, LA

The Saints lost a close game to the Vikings on Monday night. Fortunately, for them, they get a Raiders’ squad whose internal issues have plagued them this season and it shows on the field.

My Pick: Saints

Cincinnati Bengals (0-5) at New York Jets (2-2)

Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

Favre and Jets have had a week to rest after their big win against the Cardinals from 2 weeks ago. The Bengals almost beat the Cowboys last week, but almost isn’t good enough. The Bengals are still one of the worst teams in the league on defense and with the Jet seeming to find some rhythm on offense; it’s going to be a long day in East Rutherford for the Bungles.

My Pick: J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets

Chicago Bears (3-2) at Atlanta Falcons (3-2)

Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA

Although the Falcons are moving the ball well on offense, the Bears’ defense is a playing solid, smart football. This is an experienced, veteran squad on the Bears’ defense and when you combine that with the Kyle Orton’s ability to manage the game well on offense and Matt Forte running the ball, you must go with the Bears.

My Pick: Bears

Detroit Lions (0-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-3)

Metrodome, Minneapolis, MN

The Vikes pulled out the last second win last Monday.  It was a hard fought battle, and what better way to celebrate a victory like that is playing against a terrible Detroit Lions squad. Yeah, the Lions are a divisional foe, but they stink.

My Pick: Vikings

St. Louis Rams (0-4) at Washington Redskins (4-1)

FedEx Field, Landover, MD

There’s no hope for the Rams. Their season was over with the 1st game of the season. The Skins have won 4 games in a row and with the Rams struggling like they are. Look for the Skins to win their 5th game in a row this Sunday.

My Pick: Redskins

Carolina Panthers (4-1) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2)

Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

The Panther’s offense is running on all cylinders and their defense is ranked 4th in the league. The Bucs are hurting on offense and “Father Time” is lurking over this Tampa Bay squad. Too many injuries of the Bucs offense will be their downfall for the game.

My Pick: Panthers

Miami Dolphins (2-2) at Houston Texans (0-4)

Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX

Someone gave the Phins some “brave juice” for the past weeks.  Winners of two in a row, I gotta go out on a limb here and roll with the Phins. Apparently, college plays do work in the NFL and it will be interesting to see if they can continue to win running that type of offense. Also, let’s not forget, the Phins’ defense is ranked 7th in the league while their offense is ranked 10th. I guess fish, or in this case tuna, is good for body and the soul.

My Pick: Dolphins

Baltimore Ravens (2-2) at Indianapolis Colts (2-2)

Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN

The Ravens have the best defense in the league and with the Colts offense looking stagnant; the safe bet is the Ravens in this game. The Ravens have a hard-hitting defense and with the Colts still trying to find their rhythm on offense, this looks to be a long day for Peyton Manning and the Colts at home.

My Pick: Ravens

4pm games

Green Bay Packers (2-3) at Seattle Seahawks (1-3)

Qwest Field, Seattle, WA

Both the Packers and the Seahawks are hurting with injuries. Fortunately, for the Seahawks, their offense, especially in the wide receiver department, is starting to get healthy. With Aaron Rodgers’s status still up in the air and the Packers secondary still banged up, I’m going with the Seahawks in the rematch from last year’s 2nd round playoff match-up.

My Pick: Seahawks

Dallas Cowboys (4-1) at Arizona Cardinals (3-2)

University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ

Minus the off the field distractions, the Cowboys are a good team. As long as they stay focused going into Sunday’s game, they should have this game won.  Then again, I thought the same about the Cards / Bills match-up last weekend and look at how that turned out. For the safe bet, I’m sticking with the Cowboys.

My Pick: Cowboys

Sunday Night Football, 8pm

New England Patriots (3-1) at San Diego Chargers (2-3)

Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA

In another rematch from last year’s playoffs, the Brady-less Pats and the lifeless Chargers will square off. Before the season started, this game would have been a sexy pick for the Game of the Week. Now, it’s just a regular game that’s on Sunday Night Football.

The chargers’ defense looks out of synch and with the pats winning games minus Brady, I’m going to have to go with Bill Belichick and the Pats. They keep finding ways to win and you can’t count them out for that. Vengeance will not be in the corner of the Chargers this Sunday.

My Pick: Patriots

Monday Night Football, 10/13/08, 8:30pm

New York Giants (4-0) at Cleveland Browns (1-3)

Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland, OH

The Giants are arguably the best team in the league right. Solid play on offense and a crushing defense is the reason why the Giants are considered, by some, as the best team in the league.

The Browns are struggling despite having a win. Let’s not forget, that win came against the Bungles. I mean Bengals. We call those types of wins “moral victories”. Unfortunately, there will be no “moral victories” in this game.

My Pick: Giants

Teams with Bye weeks: Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers

ASIS Presents: The Black Mafia Family (DVD Review)

The Black Mafia Family was not a record label at heart. It was a three hundred million dollar drug cartel. In this ASIS DVD Magazine documentary special, the cocaine-distributing conglomerate is fully exposed from its rise in Detroit to its subsequent fall from its nationwide network.

The forty-minute film serves more as a piece of propaganda than information. It celebrates the illegal enterprises of this band of dealers-turned- rappers as Big Meech, Oo Wee, Bleu Da Vinci, and the rest of the family members adorn the screen as unremorseful sponsors of their crimes.

The documentary begins with unrelated interview clips of the real Rick Ross justifying his path to the narcotics world. His presence lends legitimacy to the Black Mafia Family who aspire to similar infamy. Scenes of backroom paper stacks, gyrating strippers, and elaborate jewelry introduce the viewer to the life of Demetrius Flournoy, aka Big Meech.

The boisterous spearhead of BMF is very candid about his involvement in narcotics. During one segment, he brags about the family’s unprecedented strength of loyalty with the catch phrase, “After us there will be no other.”

Amidst the federal investigation for numerous counts of drug conspiracy and money laundering, the music endeavors of BMF are a mere subplot. The film briefly highlights the entertainment company’s flagship artist, Bleu Da Vinci, and his single, “Still Here” with label mate Oo Wee.

Besides that and a short cameo from Shawty Lo, most of the Hip-Hop conversation focuses on the BMF’s involvement in the beef between Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane. Their war of words resulted in an unsolved murder during an altercation between Gucci Mane and members of Jeezy’s entourage.

As much as this ASIS release portrays the glamour of BMF’s illegal transactions, the film’s producer, Shabazz, cannot escape the harsh reality of each member’s outcome. He admits that the crew would eventually face hostility from the Mexican Mafia Family in addition to several federal cases landing Big Meech in jail for up to twenty years and others members on trial for related charges. Besides another twisted tale of short-lived wealth, ASIS presents The Black Mafia Family does not contribute much to the urban film canon.

Consequence Flies Kyte To Stay Hot

With a black cell phone in hand, Queens-bred rapper Consequence

weaves in and out the backstage halls on the Glow in the Dark Tour.

“Pretty lady alert!” Consequence shouts. “Pretty lady

alert!”

Statuesque females of different races smile and wave coyly

into the camera phone’s lenses before dashing into pockets of entertainers,

moguls, and crews. The energy is hypnotic and your senses are teased into

keeping up because if you blink you might miss Kanye West walking out of his

dressing room or tune out Taz Arnold’s political plug urging you to “vote Obama

way.”

Just a simple click on your computer’s mouse or cell phone’s

keypad instantly takes you to video logs from behind the scenes of one the

year’s most successful tours courteous of ConsTV.

“We only gonna bring you the best,” said Consequence, on his

first video mobile show. “I’mma show ya everything! Everything! Everything!”

And that he does via a new digital media platform known as

Kyte.

Kyte broke into the mobile and online tech worlds in 2006

when its co-founders, Daniel Graf and Erik Abair, introduced web communities to

a program that produce, brand, and distribute content to multiple destinations.

“Our view is that the brand is the destination, and fans

should be able to watch branded content wherever they are,” said Graf, in an

email.

There are four major components that separate Kyte from its

competitors, according to Graf. First, Kyte is not a destination site. It can

be viewed on a custom player with advertisements on the artists’s website, as

well as, message boards like the Ill

Community, social networks like Facebook, blogs, and mobile phones. Second,

with it’s Kyte Mobile Producer for Nokia S60 phones, users can instantly record

and upload content via web camera, digital camera or phone. Third, an embedded chat

component allows fans to communicate with artists in real time. And fourth,

channels are automatically updated whenever new material is produced—a key

feature when an artist’s channel is embedded onto thousands of sites.

Sounds like YouTube? Yes and no. Kyte has attracted the

attention of hip-hop artists such as Consequence because of the vast

possibilities it provides artists to get their shine on—just brighter.

Already a fervent YouTube producer, with his video column

series “Real Men Don’t Cry” where he interviews respected figures in the music

and entertainment industry who offer insight on “making it in the game,”

Consequence was gradually earning an online following. The show was picked up

by OnSmash.com and gained thousands of hits and props flooded the comments

section.

However, it was his January 2008 YouTube video documenting

his triumphant Connect Four win against Jay-Z that “got a gang of attention,”

earning over 300,000 hits on his channel to date. Intimate and raw footage like

this would propel Consequence’s online status on his custom Kyte channel.

His first introduction to Kyte was through combing the

websites of fellow hip-hop artists like 50 Cent. The General of G-Unit’s

channel is featured on “thisis50.com,” as well as, his MySpace and a number of

BlackPlanet fans’ pages earning him over 3 million total views thus far.

Consequence recognized the magnitude of power Kyte possessed in sharing not

only music, but also connecting with fans on a personal level.

After hopping aboard the Glow in the Dark Tour in April,

Gabe Brosbe, Kyte’s business development manager, reached out to Consequence

and officially put him on to Kyte. The rapper joined a community of musicians,

athletes, television and radio stations, bloggers, publications, and companies

making up over 64,000 Kyte channels from around the world, according to Graf.

Capturing the happenings on-stage and backstage of the Tour

for fans to relive the moment or engage for the first time was the perfect

subject for the debut of ConsTV.

“This was the first tour where I’ve gotten some footage, and

on a personal level,” said Consequence. “I remember Russell Simmons’ The Show

Tour and because of the lack of technology, I’ve seen very little footage

floating around.”

Thanks to Kyte, Consequence is able to “capture some of

those special moments” and more exclusives including Mos Def discussing the

last Black Star album, Kanye West celebrating his birthday, Pharrell doing a

dead on impersonation of Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z’s Madison Square Garden

performance of “Jockin’ Jay-Z,” and A Tribe Called Quest in what looks like a

home-made studio spitting a few rhymes.

“Using Kyte, I’m bringing fans into my world and giving my

perspective,” said Consequence. “A lot of people didn’t know me from working

with Kanye, A Tribe Called Quest, and the other circles I move through. ConsTV

really gets it across.”

With 62 shows played on 13,619 websites and over 1 million

total views to date, he’s become quite the online megastar.

Reformed Drug Kingpin Frank Lucas To Launch Non-Violence Tour

Infamous 1970s drug kingpin Frank Lucas will attempt to redeem himself from past sins, by enacting a 20-city U.S. tour speaking out against violence.According to the New York Post, an anonymous insider of Lucas’ camp revealed the tour will focus on students and emphasize the importance of education over street life.“Frank Sr. will be talking to students about how they should get grades, not guns, and not follow in his footsteps,” the anonymous source explained. “There will also be gun drops for illegal handguns that he and his son are setting up.”Frank Lucas is credited with breaking La Cosa Nostra’s (Italian Mafia) dominance of the heroin market in black communities by establishing direct contact with suppliers in Southeast Asia. From there, Lucas’ organization would smuggle in the drugs through rigged government coffins sent over for soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.At his apex in the early 1970s, authorities allege Lucas’ criminal empire generated up to $1 million dollars per day smuggling heroin. He was convicted in 1975 and sentenced to 70 years in prison. To reduce his sentence Lucas entered the witness protection program in 1977, and provided evidence that lead to over 100 drug related convictions. After years in obscurity, Lucas burst back into public consciousness with last year’s American Gangster, the blockbuster biopic film starring Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. In addition, mogul Jay-Z further entrenched Lucas’ exploits in Hip-Hop culture through his concept album American Gangster, which chronicled the movie version of Lucas’ life as an unofficial soundtrack. At press time, Lucas has not announced the locations or dates for the non-violence tour.

1. Halle Berry Educates on the Definition of Sexy

Looks like Esquire

magazine has finally realized what I have known for a good minute. The magazine

has named Halle Berry as its sexiest woman alive for its November issue.

Considering she has graduated to mommy status, the

42-year-old Oscar winner put it all in perspective. “Sexy is not about wearing

sexy clothes or shaking your booty until you damn near get hip dysplasia.

Sexiness is a state of mind – a comfortable state of being. It’s about

loving yourself in your most unlovable moments.”

So with that, it may come as a surprise to find that Halle

lists pasta (“spaghetti is sexy, especially when it’s served off the tips of a

man’s fingers. I like that”), wine just before sex (“It relaxes me. But if I

want to get a serious groove on – if I want an out-of-body experience

– I’m all about the sloe-gin fizz”), undergarments (“I’m good-to-go in a

tank top and bare feet – although every woman should own at least one

good pair of pumps. That’s really the only wardrobe you need for sex: a tank

top and pumps.”) and forearms on a man among the things she finds sexy.

And if you’ve got a car and you’re Halle’s man, then you’ve

hit the jackpot, as that seems to also rank on her list. The reason?

“…because it smells like him, because his shape is pressed

into the seat, because it’s littered with little bits of his life – his

golf balls or his chocolate bar wrappers – and it’s ripe with the smells

of him. That’s the car I most want to ride in,” Berry told Esquire as she confirms that all the talk about women being

responsible for their own orgasms is “all true.”

“I wouldn’t let a man control that. Not anymore,” she said.

“Now I’d invite him to participate. I’ll tell you this: I’ve learned my tricks.

I know what I like. I do not wait around. I initiate. And I’m not all about

frequency. I favor intensity.”

To quote Morris Day from Purple Rain, “I think I’m gon’ need a drink.” I’ll be looking at

Illseed’s pics from the Esquire

shoot if anybody needs me.

2. Robin Thicke Yearns for Self-Love

Like any singer, Robin Thicke appreciates the love he gets

from fans. But the crooner recently admitted to being without a different kind

of love when he admitted to wanting to be loved and needing love.

“Self-love, that’s what I been missing, sometimes I still

miss it; there’s nothing more powerful than self- love,” Thicke told The

Associated Press. “Because when we doubt

ourselves and doubt each other, it really just comes from I don’t have enough

confidence in myself to be good or be kind, so I have to be mean or be rude and

hold other people down and say, ‘You’re not good enough because you’re this and

that.’ But if you have self-love and self-confidence you normally give it out

more.”

Although I get what he’s saying, the struggle to me would be

a lot easier if I were making more than enough to pay my bills with a

successful singing career and beautiful wife like Paula Patton by my side to

support me. But since every other female celebrity is getting hitched or having

a baby, I guess I’ll have to settle on loving myself and the bill collectors

who think enough of me to send those late payment notices.

Love.  Such a

beautiful thing. Yes it is. Eat your heart out Robin.

3. Salma Hayek Joins the Fight Against Tetanus

Being a mom is changing Salma Hayek for the better.

According to reports, the actress is joining the fight

against tetanus by supporting a partnership between Pampers and UNICEF. The

alliance seeks to eradicate tetanus in mothers and babies around the world

within four years. More than 50 million vaccines have been given to mothers and

babies in developing countries, where, according to UNICEF, tetanus kills up to

140,000 infants and 30,000 women each year.

The effects of the condition hit Hayek especially hard when

she met tetanus victims during a recent trip to Sierra Leone.

“One of the things that was very moving about the trip was

to see 15-year-old girls, really young, taking responsibility for their lives

and their children before they’re born by saying ‘I am going to be healthy, I

am going to take this vaccination,’” the movie star relayed to journalists at

the United Nations.

As part of the campaign, Pampers will give UNICEF the money

for one tetanus vaccine for every pack of specially marked diapers it sells

before the end of the year. The company expects its efforts will produce 70

million more vaccinations.

4. Tyler Perry Receives Star-Studded Support for Making

History

Playwright, filmmaker, entertainment mogul. Now history

maker. Tyler Perry added that label to his resume by becoming the first

African-American ever to launch his own major TV and film studio.

According to reports, Tyler Perry Studios will include more

than 200,000 square feet of studio and office space as well as five sound

stages that will be named after entertainment trailblazers Quincy Jones, Sidney

Poitier, Ruby Dee and Cicely Tyson. The fifth sound stage is currently unnamed.

Perry’s TBS sitcoms House of Payne and Meet

the Browns will be shot at the studio as

well as other film projects.

The mogul officially launched his new studio on Saturday

(Oct. 4) with a star-studded soiree in Atlanta. Among the guests on hand for

the celebration were Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, Oprah Winfrey,

Poitier, Dee, Tyson, Louis Gossett, Jr., L.A. Reid, John Legend, America’s

Next Top Model winner Eva Pigford, Forest

Whitaker and Whitney Houston. Sports icons Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds.

Despite his latest achievement, The AP reports that Perry faces criticism from the Writers

Guild of America after firing four writers from House of Payne last week. Nevertheless, Will Smith couldn’t resist

making a case for change in light of Perry’s historic studio launch.

“This is an American first, and the first in the universe,”

the actor told People.com. “There is something happening in America and in the

world that’s powerful. He is not letting anyone get in his way. Those are the

wonderfully naive, arrogant, humble, powerfully American concepts that make

things powerful in this country. It’s big.”

Hats off to Mr. Perry for making major waves. Major moves in

entertainment and business. What’s next for aspiring history makers? The

Presidency of the United States? Hmmmmm.

5. R. Kelly Seeks Court-Assisted Payback

R. Kelly continues to play with fire. With all the cases

against him, it was only a matter of time before the vocalist struck a good

note with the courts.

E! Online reports that Kells was awarded nearly $3.4 million

in damages from concert promoter Leonard Rowe after a court-approved arbitrator

determined that Rowe had been selling investment shares in Kelly’s Double Up

tour without the embattled hitmaker’s permission. In addition, Rowe’s

Georgia-based company, Rowe Entertainment was also ordered to pay Kelly’s legal

bill for the lawsuit the singer filed in February.

With the new decision, Kells is looking to make sure he gets

everything he is due. According to Billboard, R. Kelly Touring, a company that represents the singer, filed court

documents Monday (Oct.6) in Los Angeles Superior Court that seeks a judge’s

confirmation of the $3.4 million award.

According to the suit, Kelly accuses Rowe Entertainment and

Leonard Rowe of failing to pay him several million dollars in tour proceeds in

full for shows scheduled for late last year and early 2008. Not surprisingly,

documents show Rowe disputed the arbitration but didn’t offer any defense

during a recent hearing.

With another court-related W under his belt, Kelly didn’t

hesitate to speak out on the decision via a statement released by his rep Allan

Mayer.

“I agreed to let Leonard Rowe promote my tour because he

convinced me he was an underdog who deserved a chance to prove himself,” the

statement read. “Like the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.”

Stay tuned for the next episode of When Good Artists and

Deeds Go Bad. Coming to a local bootlegger near you.

6. Beyoncé Goes

the Extra Mile for New Album, Drops Wedding Details

With a highly anticipated movie coming in December and

another one hitting theaters early next year, Beyoncé will be busy for a good

while. But the songstress continues to not know the meaning of the word “rest”

as she admitted to recording more than 70 songs for her forthcoming album in an

effort to create “a sound that reveals all of me.”

“I am in a different place right now and I wanted people to

see the many sides of me,” the 27-year-old diva wrote in a post on her official

website about the album, which comes out Nov. 18.

While people can get a preview of those sides with B’s newly

released singles, “If I Were a Boy” and “Single Ladies,” everyone is still

curious about her marriage to Jay-Z. Fortunately, Essence magazine came to the rescue

by getting Beyonce to drop details about the hush hush affair as well as her

and Jigga’s desire to maintain some type of privacy within their high profile

lives.

As for the wedding, it turns that out that the event was, as

Beyoncé put it, “very small and intimate.” And while she sports a rock on her

finger now, Mrs. Carter was adamant about not having an engagement ring as she

opted to get matching tattoos with Jay of the Roman numeral four on their ring

fingers to ensure that a mark of some form is there in case they have to remove

their rings.

Considering that Beyoncé’s birthday falls on Sept. 4 and

Jigga’s birthday is Dec. 4 and their wedding anniversary is April 4, I guess it’s

safe to say that the number 4 carries some weight. Let’s hope that age 44 for

Jay is not an omen for the couple’s demise.

7. Eva Mendes Continues Sexy Talk

Just a few Words ago, Eva Mendes triggered discussion when

she admitted to walking around the house in her birthday suit. Now the

34-year-old actress is weighing in again on all things sexy as she shared her

opinion about nudity in America in the November issue of the Spanish edition of

Vogue magazine. Let’s just say there’s

room for improvement in the US.

“I love my country, but I believe that we are too quick to

censor nudity,” Mendes said. “We seem okay with violence, but nudity we race to

criticize and censor. I’m not at all ashamed or frightened about showing my

body.”

I guess that can’t be too much of a shock, considering Eva

has no problem with being labeled a sex object among her fans and admirers,

provided it doesn’t become an obstacle for achieving bigger things.

“I love it, but it’s not important to me to always be

thought of as sexy,” she added. “I like it when it doesn’t limit my career.

It’s a part of my life, but on a secondary plane.”

THE GOVERNMENT’S GONNA COME KNOCKING

I KNEW this was going to happen, but I didn’t want to say anything yesterday. Rumor has it, when poppa Baby gave son Lil Wayne a cool milli for his birthday, it may have raised the ire of certain government factions – THE IRS. Certainly, this remains the stuff rumors are made of, but they might want to take a sizable chunk out of that million and give it to Uncle Sam. You know Sam is a pimp and a pimp gets that money. Anyway…time will tell, but I am sure they are handling their business the right way.

USHER AND TOMEKA ARE TOGETHER STILL

I have some insider info that should put those rumors of separation to bed. Usher and Tameka are not separated. As a matter of fact, according to my intel, Tameka came into Usher’s ENT doctor’s office on Wednesday and picked up his prescription. As I understand she was very snobbish and nasty. But they are together.

On top of everything else, Tomeka told Essence.com, “My husband is a consummate artist and entertainer. This video is strictly entertainment and was made for his fans. I am clear that he is a sexy man and looks amazing in this clip. I support my husband in his endeavors.”

She got this!

TRAVIS BARKER SPEAKS

US Weekly magazine talks to Travis Barker after his tragic plane crash with DJ AM and others who died.

“I am doing the best I possibly can be. I’m so anxious to get out of here. I’ve just been in surgery after surgery. I have third degree burns basically from my feet up to my waist and both hands. One of my hands was second degree burns and one third degree burns. I’m trying to have a quick recovery and play the drums again and be able to hold my kids again.”

“I hate planes. My biggest fear ever is to be involved in a plane crash. I sit here and I read books and watch TV. I think if this surgery went well, I’ll be here at most two weeks.”

YA BOY – INJURED?

IF you were at the AllHipHop Breeding Ground, you got the pleasure of seeing Ya Boy, the rapper from Cali, spitting crazy from the stage. Evidence of Dilated Peoples Preps The Layover EP

After a successful 2007 that saw rave reviews for his solo debut The Weatherman, Grammy award-winning, Dilated Peoples member Evidence is set to release the follow EP The Layover.

Knowing that Hip-Hop history is decorated with many classic EPs that launched legendary careers, Evidence promises that his offering will have no filler and lives up to the legacies of Ice Cube’s Kill at Will, Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s All Souled Out, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony’s Creepin’ on ah Come Up.

To achieve that end, the rapper/producer proclaimed he had to again ignore the trendy albeit confining labels all too often bestowed upon forward-thinking Hip-Hop artists.

“Backpack sucked, then backpack was cool, then backpack sucked again, and now backpack is cool again,” Evidence explained to AllHipHop.com. “Alternative was wack, now alternative is better. All I know is I do what I do. I’m not a hipster, I’m not gangsta. If it’s a backpack, I gotta buy one, ‘cause I don’t own one. I’m doing Progressive-Hop. It’s a new genre. Put it in your iTunes.”

Production for the title track lead single is handled by acclaimed board smith Khrysis, and is available now for download.

The EP also features appearances from will.i.am, Blu, Phonte, Defari, and Alchemist.

In preparation for the project’s release, Evidence has partnered with LA’s DJ Skee for The Layover Mixtape.

Notable for being Evidence’s first mixtape offering, the tape will contain unreleased tracks, remixes, and rarities from the Dilated veteran’s catalogue.

In addition, fans this month will now be able to catch Evidence on the “Still High Tour 2008,” headlined by Method Man and Redman.

The Layover EP is scheduled for release on November 25 via CD and iTunes download.

Knockout Nation: Tarver Battles Dawson! Vitali Returns Against Peter! Mosley Blocks Steroid Allegations, Sandy Saddler

Tarver-Dawson, Klitschko-Peter 10/11 on Showtime

This weekend Showtime will have an intriguing double-header showcasing two of the world’s top light-heavyweights and two of the more exciting pugilists in the heavyweight division.

First up, rising star Chad Dawson will challenge veteran Antonio Tarver for the IBF title. Both men are coming off wins, although each went through drastically different scenarios to obtain them.

Tarver breezed through a defense against the tough, but limited and plodding Clinton Woods. Behind his superior punching technique, which included a stiff southpaw jab, Tarver dominated and turned that bout midway into a glorified sparring session. On the other hand, Dawson barely escaped with a controversial decision win over hard-nosed Glen Johnson, who hurt the young champ numerous times throughout that contest.

With two southpaws, it’s likely both fighters will have difficulty landing clean shots early against each other. Also, because of Dawson’s aggressive style the likelihood of accidental headbutts are high.

Dawson has a clear speed advantage that will trouble Tarver. In his signature win, the young titlist befuddled former champ Tomasz Adamek with his hand-speed. Against Glen Johnson, Dawson was able to stun and stifle pressure from Johnson whenever he let loose with flashy but accurate combos.

Also, Dawson’s preference to work the body can serve him well in this bout, as the older Tarver would be hard-pressed to handle that attack deep into the later rounds.

For Tarver, he brings to the table not only underrated power but also exceptional timing in his punching technique. It was the Magic Man’s punching timing that negated the speed of Hall of Famer Roy Jones in two of Tarver’s biggest wins, and also carried him to wins over Glen Johnson and Montell Griffin.

And now after horrible outings against Bernard Hopkins in 2006 and Elvir Muriqi in early 2007, it appears Tarver has now finally regained his form.

At various stages, Tarver is going to be able to time Dawson and stun him with stinging counters, and possibly even drop the young lion. However, Dawson showed in the Johnson bout he can take sustained punishment and continue to have the focus to fire back and score points of his own. And Dawson’s fast hands, particularly on the inside to the body, will wear down Tarver’s activity as the fight goes on.

While essentially a toss-up, I like Dawson’s flashy but accurate combinations to impress the judges enough for him to come on strong in the bout’s second half.

The main event for the card features former titlist Vitali Klitschko, who last fought nearly four years ago on December 11, 2004.

Hampered by various injuries, Vitali retired in 2005 and vacated his WBC title. However, the WBC promised him an immediate title shot should he ever return.

In a potential regretful decision, “Dr. Iron Fist” is foregoing a tune-up bout and going right at the universally recognized number one American heavyweight Samuel Peter.

Despite being the WBC champ, Peter has his own question marks to answer from fans and the boxing press.

After dominating James Toney in their 2007 rematch, Peter went on to have a dud of a performance against Jameel McCline last October, getting dropped and nearly knocked out early on. He rebounded late in the fight to win a unanimous decision.

In March Peter fared better in a knockout win over faded Oleg Maskaev, but failed to impress many critics who are expecting more from the man touted as the heir apparent to the division crown.

If this were the Vitali of 2004, I’d have no qualms picking the Urkrainian. At his best, the former RING champ keeps up a consistent workrate, sometimes tripling his jab and wearing down opponents with hard, clubbing right hands. And for those who managed to land on the 6’7 Klitschko, Dr. Iron Fist retained a sturdy beard that’s put him in the record books as the only heavyweight champ/titlist never to be floored.

But that was the Vitali of four years ago, and no matter how hard he’s trained it’s impossible that the various ligament tears that sidelined him along with years of inactivity haven’t taken their toll. Even in his “prime” years, Vitali’s stamina was barely passable, most noticeable in his bout with Corrie Sanders as the Urkrainian giant labored to a 8th round knockout.

Vitali’s beard will see him to the final bell, but expect his previous leg injuries and stamina woes to drown him in the bout’s second half, allowing Samuel Peter to dominate the championship rounds for a clear unanimous decision.

Prospects Shine on HBO’s B.A.D. (Boxing After Dark)

This past Saturday HBO exhibited showcase fights for three of the more exciting prospects at the lighter weights, and each fighter delivered.

Light-middleweight southpaw Sergio Martinez (44-1-1, 24 KOs) showed how deadly a hard jab can be, as the Spaniard used the punch to bust up contender Alex Bunema and score a merciful 8th round stoppage.

The largely unknown Martinez won every round, dropping Bunema with a straight left hand in the third. Constantly being worked over against the ropes with quick combos to the body and head, the referee gave the tough Bunema every opportunity to get himself back in the fight before calling off matters.

Hard-hitting junior middle Alfredo Angulo (14-0, 11 KOs) put a brutal TKO beating on Andrey Tsurkan (26-4, 17 KOs) in the card’s second bout. While both are inside fighters, Tsurkan’s slow hands and limited punching accuracy left him a sitting duck for Angulo. After being dissected slowly for the full ten rounds, the white flag was waived by Tsurkan’s corner after manic screams of mercy from announcer Jim Lampley.

In the main event, exciting albeit unpolished featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (12-0, 10 KOs) overcame getting dropped in his second consecutive fight to score a 2nd round stoppage over previously unbeaten Marcos Ramirez (25-1, 16 KOs).

Coming in reckless with guns blazing and his chin up the air, Gamboa goaded his opponent into furious exchanges throughout the opening stanza. In the middle of one combination, Gamboa was wobbled by a counter left and subsequently dropped by accidental elbow the referee missed.

Enraged, a slightly dazed Gamboa got up and continued firing power shots at Ramirez to close the round.

In the second, a sneaky right uppercut from Gamboa toppled Ramirez for an eight count. Relentless in his pressure, the Cuban gold medalist bullied Ramirez into the ropes with lightning fast hooks before ending his night with cracking left to the ribs, followed by another right uppercut.

Gamboa’s defense shows he’s not ready for the elite top 5 of his division like Rafael Marquez, Israel Vazquez, and Chris John. But his face first brawling style ensures he’ll secure another HBO date very soon.

Ike Quartey Comeback Confirmed

Dan Rafael of espn.com has reported that former welterweight champ Ike Quartey had decided to come out of retirement.

Promoter Lou Dibella confirmed the news by stating Quartey is looking to climb back in the ring December 5 against Branco Milenknovic in South Africa.

“Ike wants to fight and Branco and I have been working out the details. We’ll be speaking again on Friday,” DiBella revealed. “I’ve had some conversations with Top Rank and Golden Boy about maybe doing something with them. Once Ike is back with a ‘W,’ I’ll talk to them about what fights we can do together that makes sense.”

Ever since losing a controversial decision to Oscar De La Hoya in 1999, “Bazooka’s” career has been a mixed bag and overall disappointment given his talent level.

And with Quartey turning 39 years of age next month, it’s hard to imagine what the former champ has left at this stage.

Mosley Blocks Tell-All Book from BALCO head Victor Conte

Shane Mosley has filed a defamation lawsuit in New York against Victor Conte, the infamous doctor of BALCO Institute who was sold performance enhancing drugs to athletes such as Marion Jones and Barry Bonds.

Mosley found himself involved in the controversy after documents revealed he visited the clinic shortly before his rematch with Oscar De La Hoya. In that fight, Mosley sported a chiseled physique that disappeared in his next bout with Winky Wright.

Conte’s book, entitled BALCO: The Straight Dope on Barry Bonds, Marion Jones, and What We Can Do To Save Sports, has been delayed in part due to Mosley’s lawsuit.

Even though Mosley claims he thought BALCO’s products were legal, you can bet if the book is released it’ll prove very damaging to the welterweight star’s reputation.

David Haye Makes Heavyweight Debut 11/15 Against Monte Barrett

It’s put up or shut up time next month for boastful cruiserweight kingpin David Haye, who will make his heavyweight debut next month against dangerous contender Monte Barrett.

Haye has been campaigning for the better part of this year for a title shot against Wladimir Klitschko, but first the colorful champ has to prove he can hang with the bangers of the division.

To this point, Haye has promised to retire if he cannot get by Barrett.

“If I can’t get through Monte, I’m not going to be able to beat Wladimir Klitschko, so I’ll probably call it a day,” Haye admitted to Wales Online. “If I stumble at the first hurdle I’ll look like a joke. So what’s the point?”

Throwback Fighter of the Week: Sandy Saddler

Feared in his day for his all-time great power and propensity to make a fight dirty if need be, featherweight Sandy Saddler was one the best fighters of the 40’s and 50’s.

He became known on the national scene because of his thrilling four fight series with Willie Pep, who is recognized by most pundits as a top 10 all time pound for pound fighter.

In their first bout in 1948, Saddler starched Pep in four rounds after dropping him three times. The 1949 rematch saw Pep outpoint Saddler to regain the title, in what many call one of boxing’s best master-classes.

The third fight in 1950 saw Saddler break down Pep with his bruising and sometimes illegal tactics, forcing Pep to retire with a dislocated shoulder after eight rounds.

The final 1951 contest, which has been dubbed the dirtiest championship fight in boxing history, saw Saddler once again take the technician Pep out of his game and into a dogfight. Unable to keep up the intense pace, Pep again faltered and was stopped after ten rounds.

Possessing a wiry frame that hid his immense punching power, Saddler defeated many world champions in Joe Brown, Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, and Jimmy Cater. A nasty fighter, Saddler can be seen in many fights holding and hitting, and even rubbing his head against cuts on other fighters to worsen the damage.

After being forced to retire due to a traffic accident in 1956, he went on to help train a young wrecking ball named George Foreman in the early 1970s.

Saddler passed away in 2001 at the age of 75.

In his career, he scored over 100 knockouts and is ranked #5 on the RING Magazine’s 100 Greatest Punchers of All-Time list.

Sandy Saddler’s final record stands at 144-16-2, 103 KOs.
