It was the year 1996 when Q, Slim, Mike and Daron, who the world would come to know as 112, dropped their first single, Only You. I thought I told you that we wont stop, was the recognized catch phrase from the remix of their hit single, featuring the Notorious B.I.G and Mase. The ATL natives began their journey to fame after being signed to the label owned by Hip-Hop mogul Sean [then] Puffy [now] Diddy Combs. Peaches n Cream, Dance with Me, Cupid, and Anywhere are just a few more of the memorable hits from the quartet that still bang loud in the clubs. Throughout the years, these Bad Boys achieved four platinum albums, eight chart- topping records and adorned two Grammy nods. After their brief hiatus, the frontman Slim, with the undeniable voice has emerged to embark on a new solo mission. Just in case you didnt know, the high falsetto singer is now the first R&B artist signed to Asylum Records and is an eight time ASCAP Award recipient. Despite rumors swirling that Slim and his 112 groupmates are on shaky terms, all appears well as the crooner still calls them his brothers and pictures them on stage with him.Slims new single So Fly featuring Shawty Lo and Yung Joc is currently racing to the top of the charts. For this new project, Love’s Crazy, Slim aligned himself with a team of producers including Midnight Black, Designated Hitters, Polow Da Don and Sean Garrett among others. We had the chance to talk to Slim about his new CEO status, debut solo album, the rise of his hometown of Atlanta, and possibly signing Faith Evans. AllHipHop.com Alternatives: So tell us about your new home at Asylum Records.Slim: I love the system over here. The great thing about it is, I have my own label M3 and I did an incredible partnership with Asylum. Weve worked hand in hand, everyone is like family. Its really hot! AHHA: Since you brought up your company M3 Productions, can you tell us a little bit more about it?Slim: Basically what I’m doing right now is Im trying to lay the foundation and get the wheels rolling, as far as the labels concerned. Im also working with other artists; Im in talks trying to complete the deal with Faith Evans, how hot is that? I have another artists, a 19 year-old rapper name Deezo. I found that hes one of the best 19 year-olds that Ive heard rap. I also have a group out there in the Bay Area, theyre called Ivy League. I love this group because theyre in touch with fashion and Hip-Hop, they remind me of the Kanye West, Pharrell and Lupe. They rap about a lot things other than the block; its like a breath of fresh air.AHHA: So far what has been the most difficult part about being a CEO?Slim: The cons are when Im accounting, my brother or one of my staff members come to me and remind me that Im working with a budget. Theyll say, You know good and well youre not Diddy, so you cant do this right here. You definitely have to recognize restraints as far as what you do with certain projects; I have to be economically sound. I have to make the best judgment and the best moves for the label. AHHA: So what are the great things that come along with that title?Slim: The pros are, you know everything nothing can slip past you, and you have a better sense of pride when its coming from your own camp. AHHA: Why did you make the decision to come out as a solo act?Slim: I already have a brand from working with 112 and weve sold millions and millions of records. I have a very distinctive sound, so its not that hard to get things back rolling. So thats good right there; I got something working. So all I have to do is make sure that I come out with a hot song, Im blessed to say that my first single is doing incredibly well. This is a really big blessing right here. AHHA: When youre performing, what does it feel like to have the spotlight totally on you? Slim: The first time I was nervous, oh my god! When youre used to looking back and you have three other guys, your brothers and now its like oh man theyre really not here. So in my mind, I have them behind me, but my staff makes everything very simple at M3. As long as I like the music and the fans are right there with me its all love, but I tell you in my mind theyre there. [laughs]AHHA: What was the process like when you were choosing producers that you wanted to work with?Slim: Well there was chemistry with a few producers. Im not going to front; I was feeling a little jealous because sometimes I feel producers give the kind of tracks that jump off in the club better to Hip-Hop artists. When you say its an R&B cat they start slowing the tempo down, making the music all soft. [laughs] These producers out now, these cats have their own swag; you have to come into their world too. AHHA: Your album is titled Love’s Crazy. Who are some of the appearances that are featured on this project?Slim: Some of the artists are Diddy, Faith Evans, Yung Berg, I have Big Boi from Outkast, and Im doing a record with Ryan Leslie. For the So Fly remix in the past 24 hours Ive gotten phone calls from T.I., Game, its a lot of stuff going on, of course you know Jadakiss, Shawty Lo and Yung Joc already on the record. This is really a big movement right here, the great thing about it is they really feel the record. When a song really affects someone and they say, I want to be apart of the movement, to me that better than any more you could ever give me.AHHA: I mean really, with this song youll be in the club feeling real fly. It will put you in a different element! So was that the effect you were looking for?Slim: Thats what Im talking about! Thats what I did; I feel that everybody needs an anthem. When I say so fly, Im not talking about materialistic things, being so fly starts in the mind and stops in the heart. When you wake up on the ride side of the bed in the morning, everything just already seems fly. Its like everyday is your birthday, everyday is Friday and thats the feeling that I want everyone to get. When you hear that record right there, it just generally makes you feel good. AHHA: How different will the songs be on your album, from the style of music and topics you sang about in 112?Slim: I believe theyll definitely be touching around the same areas; its just that I have my own swag to the situation. On a lot of 112 records we did a lot of begging to come back, I did you wrong and I messed up. Not on this record, thats not my swag!I want everyone to understand the music, but my personality. I want everyone to get to know who Slim is. I highlight the situation, rather than the problem. When you see something bumpy coming in the road, a lot of times youll say Ill just tackle it when it when it gets here. No, no, no when you see it, you stop it before it gets there. The album is going to sound very positive, realistically speaking with all of the crazy stuff going on look at our economy, jobs, and the recession. Music is supposed to be therapeutic, its supposed to make you feel good and its universal. When you make positive music, that music will stick with you forever. AHHA: Over the years, how have you seen yourself grow as an artist?Slim: Well its a blessing to see how music has evolved. In 96 when we came out, the golden years, that was like the golden era of music. Where we didnt have the Pro-Tools, the technology, now you can sing in a vocoder and anybody could sing. To go from there and in the last 12 years and still be relevant, people still feeling you and everyone is growing along with you. Its like I evolved, I was 16 years old when we came out. I still feel the same way about love, it feels the same way. It doesnt matter what age you are, you just learn more things and so theres a lot more to talk about. Now I could word my words a little bit better, but I feel like everyone could relate, young and old.AHHA: Being in the game for so many years now, what does it feel like to see the birth of the Atlanta music scene?Slim: Its amazing; you know how you graduate from a high school class? Your class might have been kind of small, but as the school grows the classes gets bigger. You go back and you look at the school and youre like thats my school right there. When we first came out and tried to get our deal, we really didnt have too many outlets. You had LaFace, you did have So So Def and you had Dallas Austin. Now there are so many labels, so many avenues. Its incredible just watching people that I was friends with, looking at T.I. knowing I grew up with him and Tiny. We were friends before the record deals and boom now hes the King of The South. Thats amazing! All of them from TLC, Escape, Jagged Edge, I cant even call everybody. You cant help but be very proud, the city, not only the artists, but the city in general because weve been holding it down!
New York-based rapper 50 Cent will wear two hats as he prepares to give fans something to hear and see with his forthcoming album and DVD, both titled Before I Self Destruct.
The Shady/Aftermath/Interscope CD will include the Scott Storch-produced lead single Get Up as well as contributions from Dr. Dre and Eminem, who will serve as producers and guests on the project.
According to 50 Cent, he wrote much of the material found on the Before I Self Destruct album, which is described as a darker and harder musical offering than 50 Cents previous effort, Curtis.
The 2007 release, which included the hit singles I Get Money and Ayo Technology, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, selling more than five million copies worldwide.
In addition to new music, fans will be treated to a Before I Self Destruct DVD helmed by 50 Cent that will be included with the CD.
The rapper wrote, directed and starred in the 90-minute original feature-length film, which is a coming of age story centering on an inner city youth raised by a hardworking single mother.
There will be some who will greatly identify with the characters and the situations presented and then there will be others who may be shocked at the struggles that go on in the inner city, 50 Cent said of the feature, which marks his directorial debut. “I made the film for both groups.”
50 Cent portrays Clarence, an aspiring basketball player who ends up working in a supermarket after his dreams of playing basketball fail to come to fruition.
After his mother is tragically gunned down, Clarence becomes consumed by revenge and takes up a life of crime to support his younger brother.
According to 50 Cent, the film version of Before I Self Destruct captures the harsh realities that reflect so many communities today.
The Before I Self Destruct movie follows 50 Cents previous movie outing with Hollywood icons Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in Righteous Kill as well as his 2005 film debut in the semi-autobiographical Get Rich Or Die Tryin.
50 Cents Before I Self Destruct album and DVD are slated to hit stores Dec. 9.

TODAY’S RUMORS!
DR. DRE AND THE GAME THE BEEF IS ON!?!
The Game has said a few comments about Dr. Dre. One such comment is: And tell Dr. Dre to pick up a phone/ before I climb through his window like “N#### I’m Home.” Im not sure how you all took this, but I didnt like Mr. Games tone on that. Dre should pick up a phone though. Anyway, on the song You Aint Fresh, which they are saying is the first Detox single (who knows if thats true), Bishop Lamont says, The first few lines were dedicated to Jayceon. Yall know you Jayceon is, right?” Its The Game!
JIM JONES CLEANS UP A BIT AND DIRTIES UP TOO
I like reading Jim Jones interviews. He recently did one with Rhapsody and he explained and clarified some things. Here are the best parts of the interview, in my opinion.
So, Cam selling Juelz contract for $2 million is false?
He made some money off the transaction. But this aint slavery. Aint nobody sell nobody. Thats the difference.
A lot of people were surprised with your comments to Complex regarding T.I.
People took it the wrong way. I wasnt really deliberately doing nothing to knock T.I. I was just saying what I felt regarding swagger and who sets the precedent for it. I know for sure that people have said, “Yo, you looking like Jim Jones. Im trying to get that ‘Jim Jones’ look.” But I havent heard people saying youre looking like T.I. or whoever. Where Im from, n****s dont run to go look like no Kanye. I dont hear n****s in the hood like I need to get that jacket Jay had on.
Have you seen T.I.s clothing line, AKOO?
I havent seen it. I seen an ad and his jeans look like some Pepe Jeans. But thats another story. I aint mad at nobody in this bulls**t game.
Do you think the press misconstrued your comments regarding T.I.?
I dont care what the press did. They misconstrued it or they got it right. You can take it how the f*ck n*gg*s wanna take it. I suggest they take it in f*ck*ng stride.
You know, when Jim said T.I.s clothing looked like Pepe Jeans, I had to laugh. Thats still hating, but funny.
WHOO KIDS PARTY WASNT TURNED OUT?
Here is what Jason “Che Guerrilla” Negron told me about the Whoo Kid party last week. I heard the cops halted the fun, but I got a couple emails saying that wasnt true. By the way, love that name, dude!
I would like to say that I’ve been a daily reader of your column for the past few years. I was at DJ Whoo Kids bday party last Thursday @ Sutra. When I arrived around 1pm, there was one police patty wagon outside of the venue. This is a normal occurrence at Sutra, it is not a “hood spot” but in the L.E.S. You never know. to my knowledge the police never stepped foot in the venue.
The place was a zoo! It was too packed. Banks, Yayo, Consequence, Josh Xantus, Tony Touch, DJ Drama, Angel Lola Love (wow), and several p### stars were in attendance. Whoo Kid blew out his candles around 2:30 am.
Shout out to Joey Rubin of the Taste Crew and Coach PR for putting it together.
I just have a beef with some of the patrons: first don’t wear doo-rags in the club, second don’t come to the venue with 30 dudes, cmon are we serious?
I have to ask why are they doing another party?
MIA IS PREGGERS
Ahhhhh I know why shes be hiding. But, like I said before, shes recording a new album so that retirement talk is over. M.I.A. is also engaged to Benjamin Brewer , the son of Warner Music Group Chairman and CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. JUST BE CLEAR!!
THIS WEEK WITH JASIRI X EP 6
Did I tell you that Jasiri X is one of my favorite rappers out right now? I love this dude! Hes got me thinking about starting a lable so I can sign the people I want to hear from! Im tired of rappers that dont have anything to say. All thats going on in the world, I want to hear more from rappers.
THE LATEST ATTACK ON OBAMA BY MCCAIN!
McCain is just getting low
ILLSEEDS QUICKIES
Did anybody see T.I. on The View? I didnt, but that just wild to hear.
The Fat Boys are not coming back with a new album, contrary to rumors. They are coming out to be seen more though. R.I.P. Buffy.
Janet keeps canceling shows. Whats the deal?
Did anybody hear a new Dr. Dre track at the end on HBO’s Entourage? I dont watch the show, but I heard that. Confirm, deny?
Boosie & Webbie were booked for a show in Mobile, Alabama on October 11, 2008. I heard they came to the city, but didnt peform, even though the house was packed.
Fonzworth Bentley is redefining cool with the single Everybody featuring Kanye West and Andre 3000 from the forthcoming album. Click here and download the Everybody video FREE on iTunes today!
OBAMA, OBAMA
Forget that A Milli stuff! Check out Obama, Obama. Grouchy Greg and Jigsaw met the dude that did this song. It aint new, but props due!
DMX ONCE DISSED 2PAC
When I heard of this, I said you a damn liar and then I listened. Sure enough, DMX sent a shot to Tupac. But, later when the same verse appeared in Get At Me Dog, he replaced Pac for K as in K-Solo. It was a hot period for the East and the West.
SPEAKING OF TUPAC NEW ALBUM?
With Lil Wayne putting in all this work, I think Tupac might have caught feelings. I hope that doesnt offend anybody. But rumor has it, Tupac will come out with a new album in 2009 called The Lost Scriptures. That title might change. Im not sure. Anyway, I heard these are never-before-heard songs. I also heard the songs will not be altered or remixed so all the purists out there should be pleased. The late Johnny J railed against the remixes and the new spin put on Pac. There is a lot of legal rumors about who is actually putting this out, but it appears that the new owners of the Death Row catalogue will be doing that.
SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!
This one is crazy. I have to warn you all, this is graphic stuff here. A father in Syria apparently gives his 2-year-old son a handgun and didnt realize there was one in the chamber. The baby knew how to use the thing, because he let one off, killing his father. Look at the video if you want, but the depiction appears tragically real.
The crazy thing is the cameraperson saw this play out. Perhaps they didnt know it was loaded.
SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END 2!
I am giving myself a headache, but did Left Eye of TLC predict the end of the world shortly before hear death? They say that Left Eyes Third Eye really began to see much clearer as she purged herself.
Now watch this, a more detailed look at Nibiru Planet X:
Anyway, you know they are already on Mars looking to see if it can sustain human life. I hear they are also planning for man to be on the moon for about 6 months at a time. In about 2012 its going down, B and we are not going to be included.
TUPAC CLUB FOOTAGE
Somebody tried to impress me that this represented Tupac in 2008, but we know better. Nevertheless, I love how I can see Pac moving having fun. If you really look and listen, you can tell this is nothing but a fake old footage.
NE-YO DIDNT HAVE TO CALL CHRIS BROWN MUSTY
I dont know how old school yall are, but musty is an old school term that means you stink. At 3:10 in the video, he calls out Musty Brown. LMAO. But, why did Ne-Yo call out Yung Berg? Why is everybody picking on Berg? Anyway, Ne-Yo went hard so he gets props for that. Damn, I wonder if Rihanna has to deal with Chris Brown being musty.
SHELZ CHECKS IN WITH SOME RUMORS
The FEM Movement Hands Amil Her Walking Papers.
Damn. Did she even get in? How do you get invited out before you step in? Anyway, Babs Bunny suggested that Amil is more of a friend to her mans package than she is to chasing paper and the rest of the ladies don’t have time for her to wipe her mouth so she’s out. (Ok, they didn’t say the wipe her mouth part. I did, but I’m sure Babs would have said it if the video had lasted longer.) Anyway, folks are still saying Amil is working at Wal-Mart which is a totally respectable gig, but some folks find that amusing. I wonder where Rah Digga is or if she has been uninvited from the paper chase too.
It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding.
“I don’t know anything about him. He seems like a good guy. I like him.”
This is a quote from Levi Johnston, Bristol Palin’s baby-daddy. He also denied being forced into any of the situations hes found himself in such as, getting married next summer and going on the campaign trail with his soon to be mother-in-law. He has dropped out of high school to work full time and has had Bristol’s name tattooed on his finger instead of getting a ring. Wonder what mom-in-law thinks about having a high school drop out for a son-in-law?
Bow Wow Says Supahead is not Cooking His B##########.
Bow Wow talked to Kendra G and set some stuff straight. He is not the father of anyone’s baby. He’s not dating Angela Simmons. He doesn’t talk to Ciara anymore, but she and his mom are good friends. He also said he’s not trying to get at industry girls anymore. He wants to pluck something out of coach instead of first class. I guess that’s cheaper.

Judge makes a rap lover listen to classical music…
As crazy as it sounds YES its true an Ohio judge has given Andrew Vactor an ultimatum either pay a $150 fine or only pay $35 with the promise that he would listen to 20 hours of classical music. Vactor was fined for playing music too loudly out of his car stereo in July. Vactor who only lasted 15 minutes with the classical music said:
‘I didn’t have the time to deal with that,’ said Vactor , who claims it was practice with the Urbana University basketball team, not music, that made him give in. ‘I just decided to pay the fine.’
The Judge says her goal was to get Andrew to understand how people felt who were forced to listen to music they might not like such as the loud rap music he was playing in his car! If I was Andrew I would have paid the 150 as I blasted Cubes Today Was a good Day and kept it moving…

Rapper Eminem will host an exclusive release party in New York on October 21 in celebration of his second book, The Way I Am.
The Way I Am is a collection of Eminems personal stories, photographs, artwork, never before seen lyrics and reflections.
The book, which also comes with a DVD featuring unreleased interviews and personal footage of Eminem, lands in the stores the same days is the rappers event, which is being held at a secret location.
Fans will be able to listen in to the event via Eminems Shade 45 Sirius satellite radio station, which will broadcast from the venue with hosts Angela Yee, Drama King DJ Kay Slay, while producer The Alchemist will man the turntables.
According to Eminems longtime friend and manager Paul Rosenberg, the book has several unique features that will be attractive to the rappers fan base.
“A couple of my favorite things about the book are the cover and the detachable lyric sheets,” Rosenberg said. “The cover is a red acetate film that slides over the traditional book print. The red jacket masks the collage of Em’s handwritten lyrics on top of the underlying photo… you kind of have to see it to really get the effect. Also inside the book in the back are several perforated pages which one can pull out of the book. On these pages are reproductions of Em’s actual lyric sheets for songs like ‘Stan’ and ‘Lose Yourself.'”
According to Rosenberg, despite Eminems superstar status and proven sales record, seeing the rappers vision through was not an easy feat.
“I fought hard for the book to have the pages detachable because there is something special about being able to hold the actual page in your hand and turn it around and around to decipher what Em’s semi-legible writing is saying,” Rosenberg continued. “You have to really see the lyric sheets to fully understand what I’m describing.”
Eminems 208-page book The Way I Am hits stores October 21 on Dutton Adult, a division of The Penguin Group.
[Editorial note: this story is a satire and a political parody.]
Streets across the United States have been hit with a new, infectious
substance that has swept the country from the streets of New York to the shores
of Miami to the coast of California.
The new substance is called That O-bama and it is a direct result of the highly
successful campaign of Senator Barack Obama.
In many urban settings, illicit drugs have been the commerce of choice for
those that choose to live outside of the mainstream. These drugs include
cocaine, meth, crack, marijuana and other substances like glue.
That O-bama has completely replaced them all in a swell of optimism.
“I got that O-Bama, I got that O-Bama,” a man says from the streets of
Denver, several weeks after the Democratic National Convention. “Whatever you need,
I got all that O-Bama. We still got it!”
The man refused to allow AllHipHop.com to identify him, but he agreed to
speak under the condition of anonymity.
He said, “that O-bama” is safer to sell than drugs, but twice as potent. Sadly,
drugs have been one of the chief forms of economic advancement by those that
have opted for risky illegal means to make money.
“That O-bama is selling like hot cakes after the club let out. That Obama is
that good good. I sell my Obama to all colors and creeds of people. I just can’t
believe I was selling crack just six months ago and catching all sorts of cases. Barack actually wants us to sell that good old O-bama to the
people. It’s actually good for the people!”
Obama, commonly called “that good old O-Bama” has known to give a person
insight, inspiration and insight to the political process.
One man says that he gives “that good old O-Bama” away free after buying
wholesale at discounted prices.
“I know it’s stupid, but I buy a crazy amount of that “good good O-Bama and
I give it away. I just give it away. People are out here and they are addicted
and they need a fix daily,” he says. “If I don’t, somebody else will give them
some bad stuff.”
That “good, old O-Bama” has spawned a number of copycats which have been
known to have adverse affects on the user.
“I got some of this stuff called “A New Change,” ‘War Hero” and “Tina Fey
Lookin’ Idiot.” They swore to me it was better than that good old O-Bama,” said
John Taylor, who ran out of his stash of Obama. “That other stuff broke me out
and I had bumps all over my neck. Nothing ruins the streets faster than bad ‘d.'”
To counter the plague of bad O-Bama, street level dealers have decided to
offer more forms and kinds of the product.
The names range from “DiscObama” to “BuffalObama” to “HydrObama” to
“Hama-ina-Hamina-Obama.”
Other forms of Obama come in clothing flavors of African kinte cloth colors
or red, white and blue. All are considered good, even though they may lack a
nice artistic aesthetic.
One person created “That Good Old O-bama” cologne, another O-bama soap and
another still called “That Good Old O-bama Change Pills,” a generic prescription
for societal change.
Whether or not these remedies actually create true change remains to be seen,
but until then, it appears the masses will continue to consume “The Good Old
O-bama.”
Hip-Hop star Rick Ross will be politically active on election day (November 4), as the headlining performer during the Give Back Concert Benefit.
Ross has teamed with Kanye West and The Dr. Donda West Foundation and the Live to Give Campaign in support of the concert, which benefits The Dr. Donda West Foundation, formerly known as The Kanye West Foundation.
The concert, which takes place at Ibiza in Washington, D.C., will feature election night coverage and a number of surprise guests, with Ross being the first celebrity confirmed.
Sources told AllHipHop.com that Kanye West will be overseas touring on election night, but attendees will be able to view an exclusive video tribute he taped, for private viewing only.
The Dr. Donda West Foundation’s Give Back Concert Benefit kicks off with a meet and greet with Washington Wizards’ Antawn Jamison, but the offer is only valid for pre-sale ticket purchasers.
Another performer is scheduled to be announced on October 20. General admission to the Give Back Benefit is $85.00 with all proceeds going to the Dr. Donda West Foundation, Rick Ross Charities, and the Antawn Jamison Foundation.

Last week at the Nokia Theater in Times Square NY, Pepsi and New Yorks Hot 97 teamed up for Pepsi Smash, a showcase of both new and established artists. After brief looks at One Block Radius and Ace Hood, Nina Sky took to the stage to finally provide the crowd with songs theyd actually heard before. As usual, Nicole and Natalie looked and sounded flawless, upgrading the energy in the room with a mix of past hits and previews of their upcoming LP The Musical. Adding to the intimate atmosphere of the venue, the girls were seen afterwards mingling with the crowd while checking out the other performances and taking pictures with fans.Up next, Jazmine Sullivan arrived with much anticipation from crowd members who were curious to see if she’d sound as good live as on record. Her short performance didn’t disappoint and, other than taking an awkward break to do a few bars from “A Milli” (which the crowd had already performed for itself in between sets), Sullivan proved that she is in fact the incredible vocalist shes billed to be. She should probably skip swinging the crowbar around while singing Bust Your Windows in the future though; thats a lawsuit waiting to happen. After a typical but unexplained hour-long break, Missy Elliott literally materialized on stage in a glass booth filled with smoke. The smaller venue didnt stop her from continuing the theatrics with a seemingly endless supply of dancers and several guest appearances from those Phantom of the Opera [aka Jabbawockeez] kids that breakdance on MTV. Missy turned out to be worth the wait, giving time to nearly every one of her many hits and previewing a few new songs. She too hopped off stage during the show, rapping her way through the entire crowd while the dancers kept it moving on stage. The evening was fun for all involved, giving fans a rare chance to get up close and personal with artists who typically play larger venues. A few miles away, Madonna may have been putting on a gigantic spectacle at the Izod Center, but actually interacting with the performers was worth all the pyrotechnics in the world.Photo Credit: Jack Sparrow
“Manhattan keeps on making it, Brooklyn keeps on taking it, Bronx keeps creating it, and Queens keeps on faking it ” – KRS-One, “The Bridge is Over.”
You can make up your own mind about KRS’ statement. While directed at MC Shan’s Juice Crew, it implicated the entire borough. Back then, Hip-Hop was a little more “real” than it is now. America had yet to zero in on the nascent culture as a mainstream art form and the actual records were its main form of communication, via late-night and weekend mix shows rather than TV and the Internet.
Hip-Hop, and Queens in particular, was experiencing a golden age in the music from 1986-1989. The Q-Boro housed superstar rappers like Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Young M.C. (yes, Young M.C.), Kool G. Rap and future stars like Nas, Mobb Deep, Ja Rule and Irv Gotti. That same period was a time of chaos in the streets of Queens, where drug lords like Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, Pappy Mason and Lorenzo “Fat Cat” Nichols earned millions of dollars by controlling the borough’s illegal drug trade through extreme terror, sheer brutality and limitless violence.
Many young black men and women survived the concrete jungles of the 1980’s and early 1990’s, but even when you reject that lifestyle, it’s nearly impossible to escape. Queens was very notable, particularly because of the brazen murder of rookie officer Edward Byrne, an NYPD officer who was shot to death by associates of Pappy Mason.
Byrne’s murder set in motion a chain of events, which eventually led to the passage of The National Crime Bill in 1989.
So imagine this: You made it through and have left those days behind you, but one day, your life changes after being accused of murder. And not just any murder, one of the most grizzly, unsolved murders in the history of the music business. Only it’s not a screenplay, it’s a true story. A story of reaching a dream against all odds. The story of Curtis Scoon.
AllHipHop.com: The thing people remember you for the most at the moment surrounds your implication in the murder of Jam Master Jay. What are your thoughts on the case and where it’s at now?
Scoon: I don’t think I am a suspect, but I was never really considered a suspect. I was once labeled a person of interest wanted for questioning. When presented with the opportunity to question me, the NYPD declined. A lot of people read into that and labeled me a suspect. I was never to my knowledge “officially” labeled a suspect, although behind the scenes that may have been the case.
AllHipHop.com: Well the police never implicated you but your name was all over the media. You have a memorable last name and from my vantage point, for a long time you and Tinard Washington [serving 17 years for robbery and admitted to being present during JMJ’s murder] were the only names floated. That’s not good company to be in.
Scoon: Here’s the thing, It’s correct that my name was perhaps the preeminent name when Jay first died. Most people in the entertainment business will recall there were all sorts of rumors and scandals at the time of Jay’s death. I remember Ed Lover accusing Murder Inc. of complicity in Jay’s death and there were a lot of other things going on. And I don’t believe for a minute that Murder Inc. had anything to do with it. But I want to clarify: Everybody in Queens got blamed for Jam Master Jay’s death. His death set in motion a lot of things that effected a lot of people. My name was in the media, but Supreme was picked up because of rumors associated with Jay’s death, The Inc. was subsequently raided, and The Inc. has essentially been decimated, because of rumors and people talking recklessly about Jay’s death.
“Everybody in Queens got blamed for Jam Master Jay’s death… The Inc. was subsequently raided, and The Inc. has essentially been decimated, because of rumors and people talking recklessly about Jay’s death.”
Tah-Tah (Editors note: Tyran “Tah-Tah” Moore, a Queens street figure who has a child with rapper Sandy “Pepa” Denton of Salt-N-Pepa) was targeted by the police and he’s been in prison for the last five years because of pressure about the Jam Master Jay death. Although my name was in the papers, Queens, at least South East Queens where I come from, caught a lot of heat behind Jay’s death. There’s a misconception that the police didn’t do anything. That’s easy to say for the people who didn’t feel the pressure and the heat for that.
AllHipHop.com: Jay’s death is going to be featured on an upcoming episode of America’s Most Wanted. Like Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, Jay’s murder has become an unsolved legend. Do you think the upcoming episode of America’s Most Wanted will help solve Jay’s case at some point?
Scoon: Well first I want to say that my heart goes out to Jay’s mother and his children. I hope the show gives them some sort of closure. Unlike Tupac and Biggie, Jay’s murder is a very solvable murder. He was murdered in a studio, one block from the 103rd precinct, in the company of people he loved and trusted. To me, the investigation should have always started at the crime scene. Not in rumors of drug deals gone bad 10 years earlier, or scandals of infidelities and things of that nature.
There was a definite concerted attempt to shift focus from where it needed to be. Hopefully America’s Most Wanted will play a role in putting this thing back on the right track. If you Google my name, it’s just a bunch of stuff about being accused of murder and that’s not a good thing. It follows me for the rest of my life. I am not a rapper or a celebrity, but my life counts too. I need closure myself.
AllHipHop.com: Well then why did you decline to be featured on America’s Most Wanted?
Scoon: I spoke with a producer from America’s Most Wanted and I didn’t see a need to be on their program. I respect their show, but for me to be on their program does nothing for me. I am trying to distance myself from the death of Jay.
AllHipHop.com: Well how did you even get this reputation and how are you recovering from the incident?
Scoon: I live my life by this. A blessing and a curse are one and the same, the difference being in the application. So no matter what life sends my way, I am going to find a silver lining and make it work to my advantage. My knees aren’t going to bend or buckle. My reputation goes back over two decades. I have to admit my role in that.
It has a lot to do with the company I have kept in the past. I have been associated and affiliated with people who maybe aren’t that good. But that was then and this is now. Even around the time that Jay was murdered, I had been distancing myself from those types of people and that lifestyle in particular. It’s like the old adage goes: If you lay down with dogs, you come up with fleas. As a young man, I just didn’t pay attention to who I kept in my circle.
AllHipHop.com: It’s interesting you say the company that you keep. Because six years later, most of the theories now center around the people he kept in his circle. Whether or not they were complicit, I don’t know. I do know Jay’s close associate Tinard has admitted to having played a role in Jay’s murder . Now he could be lying, but he’s known for putting in work on the street.
Scoon: The last thing I want to do is make an accusation. But I will say this. His entire circleI won’t mention anyone by namethey are all pretty much cut from the same cloth. They were not the kind of people that I would consort with. They weren’t killers or anything like that. Whatever they are, you can put “petty” in front of it. Jay was a different kind of guy. These are people he knew his entire life, and maybe he didn’t know how to cut the strings.
Whether they hurt him physically or not, they were all living off that man, every last one of them. If you were from Hollis and you wanted to gain access to the music business, Jay was the one you would approach. He got people jobs, he got people record deals. He was the benevolent one out of the group. I know why people hung around him, they were waiting for him to do something for them.
AllHipHop.com: And someone repaid him by killing him. That’s crazy. What have you been involved in since Jam Master Jay’s death?
Scoon: Well first, I had written two screenplays before this. In 2002, I was approached by Fat Cat’s family after my first screenplay was optioned, but nothing ever happened of it. Then I was sidetracked by the Jam Master Jay implication. But in a strange twist, the attention from Jay’s death expedited the process. My story was featured in Playboy and that led to the book Queens Reigns Supreme.
I worked very closely with author Ethan Brown. And now I am producing on television. I was a consultant on the Fat Cat Nichols episode season one of American Gangster, I actually co-produced the Supreme episode of American Gangster in season two and this season I’m the lead producer on The Shower Posse episode that’s going to be featured in the upcoming episode of American Gangster.
AllHipHop.com: So twenty years later, with Fat Cat in particular, he’s almost 50 years old and has spent most of his life in prison and will never, ever be a free man. No normal person would aspire to go on that path. But rappers seem infatuated with the gangster lifestyle. You said you were trying to shed that image, but aren’t those American Gangster’s helping to perpetuate this?
Scoon: Well the difference between what I do and what rappers do is this. In rap, the bad guys always run off with saddle bags of money, cases of champagne and beautiful women. That’s not the reality, that’s entertainment. I show the tragedy of what that lifestyle is. When you watch American Gangster on BET, you don’t see a lot of lavish lifestyle or French Riviera trips. You see a lot of struggle. A lot of wasted talent, a lot of misery. Hip-Hop has redefined the term “gangster.” Now gangster means “cool.” Your rims are “gangster,” your watch is “gangster.” I always knew “gangster” to mean being able to impose your will, through the use or threat of violence. Gangsterism is violence at the core. And no matter what, it always ends up the same.
AllHipHop.com: Death or jail.
Scoon: That’s right. I show it for what it is, and it’s ugly and it’s violent. And no one was as violent as The Shower Posse (Ed’s Note: Shower Posse hailed from Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston, Jamaica and along with the Spangler Posse, controlled Jamaica’s drug trade before expanding into the United States.)
AllHipHop.com: Right, you said you were featuring The Shower Posse on the next season of American Gangster. Just saying that name makes people worry. Is their rep how and why you selected them the focus of the episode?
Scoon: Man they were the most gangster outfit in the true sense of the word. Being a gangster isn’t about popping bottles and driving Bentley’s. It’s about using violence to impose your will. The Shower Posse was a group out of Jamaica, West Indies, who through political connections, rose to power. They were headed by Jim Brown in Jamaica and Vivian Blake in America.
They’ve been accused of over 1400 murders, while making millions of dollars shipping narcotics into the country and sending money and guns out. It’s important so people can see the raw brutality of it. Maybe if people see what means to be a gangster, maybe kids won’t aspire to be one.
AllHipHop.com: Now that you have these credits what’s next?
Scoon: I’ve received many serious inquires about the Fat Cat script. It’s titled 10-13 which is NYPD code for “officer down.” When I first started writing the script, I wrote it with Ice Cube in mind to play Fat Cat, because he looks like Cat. But when I discussed that with Cat, he told me immediately, that his preference was for 50 Cent to play him. And his reasoning for this is because 50 Cent is from South Jamaica, just like Cat. Cat also knew 50’s mother Sabrina. And more importantly, he remembers 50 as a little boy.
That role would be much more closer to who 50 Cent really is, much more than anyone suspects. From his standpoint, 50 has the proper pedigree to play the part. From my standpoint, 50 would bring a continuity to the story that no one else could do. I am currently in talks with a number of parties and I fully expect this movie to get green lighted soon. People who have a problem with me are going to have to get over it. I am here to stay. I am not going away and I am getting stronger every minute.
American Gangster’s Shower Posse special airs November 13.
California rapper Eric ‘Lil Eazy E’ Wright Jr. was among a group of celebrities involved in launching a new voter registration campaign.
The My Hood Votes voter registration and education campaign kicked off on Saturday (October 11) as Wright and campaign founder and journalist Jasmyne Cannick registered Crips, Bloods and non-traditional potential voters throughout Compton.
The campaign received support from 93.5 The Beat FM as well as entertainers and community activists that included comedian/Radio Free 102.3 KJLH radio personality Guy Black, actress Terra Menyone from The Shield, The Foxx Hole w/Jamie Foxx co-host Felicia “The Poetess” Morris, Nation of Islam Minister and activist Tony Muhammad.
My Hood Votes is us representing us. It’s us going out and talking to each other the way that only we can about the importance of having some involvement in the political process, Lil Eazy E told AllHipHop.com, admitting this will be the first time he has voted in an election.
My pops loved Compton, Lil Eazy continued. I love Compton. This was the perfect opportunity to get it crackin’ in my hometown with my family and take it into the streets.
According to Cannick, My Hood Votes came about because of her personal dissatisfaction with Presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain as well as their running mates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin.
Over the course of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates debates, its become crystal clear that both Democrats and Republicans are focused on one segment of the American population, the middle class. Hence, the absence of any mention of the word poverty, even though it is a way of life for more than 37 million people in this country, Cannick said. So while the candidates continue to be focused on the wealthy and middle class, in L.A., I’ve been focused on the hood.
Created by Cannick, My Hood Votes is a grassroots education and mobilization campaign dedicated towards reaching non-traditional voters in underserved Black neighborhoods.
Since its inception, the campaign has partnered with rappers and entertainers in an effort to educate ex-felons on their right to vote.
The organization also reached out to nontraditional voters who arent influenced by elected officials or are not familiar with the happenings surrounding those running for local and national office.
As part of the launch, the Cannick, Wright and their celebrity supporters registered and educated would be and non-likely voters as they traveled throughout downtown Compton, registering hundreds of people.
I think for me, registering a member of a Blood gang to vote shows the change that has been inspired in me and those in the community, said Wright, who serves as the official spokesperson for My Hood Votes. I say that because homeboy didn’t have to register to vote and he didn’t have to do it with me. He knew who I was and who my father was and he put all of that aside and we got down to business and he registered to vote. Now that’s what it’s all about.
Over the next four years, The My Hood Votes will expand the campaign into a national effort.
My Hood Votes is currently based out of Southern California.

Been mired in mixtapes recently? Its not difficult; the amount of music coming out can get cumbersome. Every artist from your favorite Hip-Hop superstar to your local MC has music on deck for the masses. Thats why Tale of the Tape is around to give you the knowledge you need to keep your ears to the streets.
Each mixtape is given a rating. Heavy Rotation is a rating that signals a mixtape champion. Without further delay, welcome to Tale of the Tape.
Cassidy
Return Of The Hustler
Peep It
Cassidy has been through it. After the jail bid and a car accident which almost took his life, he learned that he would no longer be signed to J Records. But like a true hustler, Phillys punchline professor hopped back on his feet and signed up with baller Carmelo Anthony. As one of his more cohesive mixtapes, this effort is a return to his signature battle delivery. Take a listen for classic Cassidy on his now famed A Millie freestyle, some humor on Look Like and street braggadocio on Come On Baby. Hopefully Melo can set up Cass for the decisive win.
Illmind
Blaps Rhymes & Life
Heavy Rotation
New Jersey beatsmith Illmind is quickly making a name for himself around the East Coast production circle. If you needed any proof of his musical dexterity, Blaps, Rhymes, And Life features a myriad of MCs dropping verses. Dont believe? Just a partial guest list includes 50 Cent (Queens), Rapper Big Pooh, Wale (Lyrically Inclined), and Skyzoo. On The Come Up and Thankful you catch a glimpse of just how good Illmind is as his mastery of reworking samples is brilliantly showcased. If this is just a mixtape, there is no telling just what he could do with an official studio album.
Royce Da 59
Bar Exam 2
Heavy Rotation
I will do to your mama what the KKK wants to do to Obama. Does Nickel-Nine have your attention now? This is only a taste from the introductory song, and the tape features high impact rhymes, disses, and production. Royce goes in lyrically, and produces several bangers in the process. Tracks such as the retooled versions of Royal Flush and Let the Beat Build give this endeavor instant credibility. The standout here is the Ignorant Sh*t freestyle that smacks of lyrics as cold as the D in the winter time. Dont miss this one.
The Game & DJ Haze
Black Wall Street Radio 5
Peep It
Right off the heels of L.A.X., The Game and his Black Wall Street roster attempt to keep a momentum going with Black Wall Street Radio 5. While Chuck Taylor provides some rewind worthy moments with Baggage Claim, Classic and Compton Story, there is enough room for the rest of the camp to shine. Juice gets busy on the introspective Reflection In The Mirror while Clyde Carson flaunts his competitive spirit on Tell Em. Minus unnecessary tracks like the Nu Jerzey Devil solo Swagger Like Jerz, Game and company prove to be one of the Raps underrated collectives.
Tony Yayo
S.O.D
Peep It
Right behind Lloyd Banks Return Of The PLK is Tony Yayos S.O.D. Wrapped around the dark scenes masterly crafted by The Joker in The Dark Knight, the tape follows the theme of the ruthless criminal well. Outside some light assistance from Maino (Southside To Bedstuy), Max B. (Do It Right, Gang Life), and a couple others, this tape is mainly anchored by Yayo himself. Tonys contract killer wit is ever so present on Catch A Body with death threats a plenty shot towards Jimmy Henchman and Terror Squad. While his remake of Special Eds I Got It Made is messy, the tape’s grimy direction will keep G-Units faithful content.

COPS RAID WHOO KID?
DJ Whoo Kid is my favorite DJ. Word to DJ Revolution. If you got that joke, you also got DJ Revolutions new CD. Nevertheless, Whoo Kid supposedly celebrated his birthday last Thursday and the festivities were going pretty good. Only issue is, as it livened up, the cops deaded it. It was at Club Sutra and right about 1 in the morning, the cops came a-knocking. I dont know all the people that were there, but I do know Tony Yayo was present. Oh well, I hope Whoo Kid got to blow out the candles and make a wish.
BISHOP LAMONT PERFORMS FIRST DETOX SONG
I guess this is it. The first single off of Detox is called You Aint Fresh and the song stars Bishop Lamont. The young rapper performed the song in Paris, France. From what I understand, this just happened last night. The audio isnt that good, but it gives you a lil bit of information on the mysterious final album of on Dr. Dre.
JAY-Z TALKS ABOUT PURPORTED FAT JOE BEEF
There is no beef, but he did mention Joes name. Interesting stuff.
John McCains campaign has confirmed the removal of their Virginia leadership representative Bobby May, over the prominent GOP veterans penning of a racially charged column parodying the policies of Barack Obama.
The piece, entitled The (clarified) Platform of Barack Hussein Obama, appeared this week in The Voice newspaper.
Throughout the column, May lampooned Obamas ethnically diverse background and how it would affect his presidential policies.
On the drug crisis, May explained that the senator would raise taxes to pay for free drugs for Obamas inner-city political base, while keeping the Constitutions right to keep and bear arms only for gang-bangers, illegal aliens, Islamo-Fascist terrorists, and Senator Jim Webbs aide.
In addition, May stated that Obama would replace the U.S. flags 50 stars with a star and crescent logo, a traditional Islamic symbol.
On the White House, May mocked that Senator Obama would hire rapper Ludacris to paint it black.
Taxes [would] be increased to buy enough paint for the job plus spray-paint for the graffiti.
Regarding the economy, May ranted that the Democratic presidential nominee would change US currency to pictures of Oprah Winfrey, Ludacris and Shelia Jackson-Lee, while appointing mogul 50 Cent as the new Secretary of the Treasury.
Acknowledging Obamas family roots in Kenya, May quipped that as president Barack Obama would send most of Americas tax money to Africa so that the Obama family there can skim off enough to allow them to free their goats and live the American Dream.
John McCains removal of Bobby May comes as his struggling campaign seeks to quell the inciting rhetoric that has lead to his recent events taking on a mob like atmosphere of angry, paranoid, and misinformed voters.
May previously has worked for numerous state Republicans campaigns for such figures as former VA Attorney General Jerry Kilgore, Lt. Gov. Bill Boling, and U.S. Rep. Virgil Good.
Before his dismissal, he also served as the treasurer of the VA Buchanan County Republican Party.
At press time, Senator Obama nor his campaign have commented on the matter.
What’s good people? Sick Sundays once again coming to bring you what’s hot and good in the Hip-Hop landscape. One thing before we go further I want to touch on is the use of the vocoder autotune, or whatever it is to make rappers sound like Soundwave from the transformers. It’s garbage. It’s wack with Kanye, it’s wack with Wayne, it’s wack with 50 Cent and it’s just flat out wack. These higher level “emcees” should be ashamed of themselves for following trends like this. Let T-Pain have that trash. How are all these guys talking about swagger they have and how nice they are and they following lil or new dudes? Meh. Triple meh. You’re better than that. Get your weight up.Aight, off the soap box, on to the music
Cory Gunz-All About MineCase in point. Cory is generally acknowledged as a young lion and ferocious on the mic. On this song I can’t tell this from a generic Wayne autotuned up song. Gunz, come back to Earth on this and get back to Bodybagz type stuff. It will be better for you in the long run.
Busta Feat. Weezy & Luda-Throw It UpMore heat from Busta. It’s almost a true tragedy that he’s dropping so much heat that no one seems to give a damn about. This time he’s got back-up with two upper level emcees. To be honest Busta kinda wipes them off this joint. It’s lucky enough there’s no auto found on this one, the beat is a lil slow for Bus, but it passes.
Drake-Swagger Like UsThis is probably gonna be the next A Milli with everybody rapping over it. Drake does a solid job of getting down even though he has an advantage cause he got a blueprint. He doesn’t wipe anyone off but he holds his own. Look out for this guy. He’s getting better every rhyme. Or every other rhyme depending on whether you hear a Wayne verse.
Killa Mike-Can You Hear MeI f***s with Killa Mike. This ain’t new or anything but I just wanted to throw it in. Mike is always on the job lyrically and his flow is different. Support the grindThe Kid Famous-What I Wrote While I Was Taking A S**TThis
is altogether strange. Solid flow and delivery, vid quality is crisp
for an internet joint. I don’t know that i can get with rhyming on the
toilet. Great to break the monotony though. Nobody has swagger like
this for sure. Bluuuurt.
Lil Wayne & Juelz Santana-Pick N RollI think this combo is good for each other. The seem to make each other step up because I don’t remember actually digging what Juelz had to say in a minute. This is solid. Here’s to hoping that they actually finish that album together. Gotta find someway to work off that 2 million. Heat. Gorilla Zoe Feat. Lil Wayne-LostMelancholy joint by Zoe is very somber and takes you on a depressing role. Wayne comes through on the help out but then…he’s back with the autotune. He’s a better rapper than this. I know I’m harping on it but sheesh I was digging the song until Weezy came on with that. He brings the song down. Zoe represents on this. Most of you will dig this, so it’s not wack but w/e.
Ludacris Feat. The Game & Willie NorthPole-Call Up The HomiesGame and Luda do their best EPMD impression going back and forth about Luda’s field trip to L.A. You heard this song before in many different versions but it does its job. Rapper visits Cali and needs to stay strapped blablabla. Last verse is left to the newcomer Willie, who outshines both veterans on this song. It’s good to hear Luda not rapping about ass, and Game keeps the names to a minimum (Although he’s still rocking his Air Forces). It bumps.
Sedrew Price-Can You Feel ItA joint from a young hungry dude. He’s getting a ton of buzz but to be honest, I don’t know what separates him from any other new guy. Good energy but songs with cats in the back ground yelling AYYE reached their peak with “What You Know About That.” I guess he’s attempting an anthemic joint but in my opinion he should find out who he is on the mic and stay away from other people’s lanes. But hey what do I know? If you like it then bang it.***************************************************************Lupe Talks RetirementHe’s arguably the most gifted emcee of this generation and after two albums and one on the way he’s already talking retirement. That would be such a waste. Personally, if you love something you never walk away from it but whatever. Good luck to him. Here’s his words. Jay-z -99 Problems and Palin Ain’t OneHov getting his political on. Some agree, some disagree. I just hope that as someone who has seen so much of the world he can talk about something other than what he used to be and talk about his journey to who he is now. 30 ain’t the new 20. Grow up on the mic. If you’re a real hustler like you say hustle some new s**t and make them like it. The Blue Magic is easy. Nas is taking the hard route. You’re up now but not for long.
