CNN is teaming with comedian D.L. Hughley to produce a weekly news-based comedy show in an attempt to capture a younger demographic.
According to Variety, Hughleys show will lampoon current events as well as the reporters covering and breaking various newsworthy stories from the pop, sports, politics and entertainment worlds.
“D.L. is a very thoughtful, well-informed guy with unpredictable views, and Ive always admired his comedy,” said CNN U.S. President Jon Klein. “The basic premise of the show is, what if a guy like him was let loose in the CNN building for a weekend after the lights went off?”
CNN has refused to divulge the name of the show, which is set to begin airing on Saturdays at 10:00 PM.
Hughley revealed that his show would be much different than Comedy Centrals popular shows “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.”
“Im a big fan of both of those shows,” Hughley said. “But Ive got a different skill set. Im not going to parody a news show or a news anchor. My show will reflect my views on things just as their shows reflect their views There have been six movies with a black man as the president, and in all those movies, the world was coming to an end. If this election isnt art imitating life, I dont know what is.”
Fans should be braced for Hughleys in-your-face commentary, which at times, has landed him in hot water.
For instance, in June of 2007, a group of black ministers protested a Juneteenth appearance by Hughley in Forth Worth, Texas.
The ministers accused Hughley of making offensive, vulgar comments about the Rutgers womens basketball team during the Imus controversy, as well as demeaning the black community.
Still, the comic appears to be enthused about the upcoming show, which will be taped in front of a live studio audience in New York.
“Its like getting to drive my fathers Mercedes to school. Id like to know what Jesse Jackson is going to do for a living if Obama is elected,” Hughley told Variety. “Id like to know what Sarah Palin is going to do if she doesnt get elected. Ever notice that she does all the things a good waitress does when she wants better tips? You know, wink and smile.”
Hughley is a former Bloods gang member who has starred in movies like The Original Kings of Comedy, The Brothers, Soul Plane and his own syndicated TV series The Hughleys.
He is also the former host of Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam, the HBO show which also launched his career.

Maxwell Tour (featuring Jazmine Sullivan)Radio City, New YorkLast week I had the pleasure of checking out the New York stop on Maxwells tour which also featured rookie soulstress Jazmine Sullivan. It all went down at New Yorks prestigious Radio City Music Hall. It had been such a long time since I had heard music from Maxwell or seen him in concert. I must admit I was curious to see what the turnout would be. I was even more curious to see what Maxwell had in store for his fans.First up was Jazmine Sullivan, and she definitely took no prisoners. From her opening number, Bust Your Windows she engaged the crowd. At one point during “windows” she picked up a crowbar to further drive home the message her impassioned vocals were already communicating. She serenaded the crowd through a melodic quilt of songs from her debut LP Fearless. Then she closed with her hit song Need U Bad to a roar from the crowd. Anticipation began to build as fans waited for Maxwell to take the stage. I noticed that even as his show was about to start, fans were still filing in. Then suddenly the lights dimmed and a spotlight was shining on center stage. And there he was, back like he never left. As I surveyed Radio City, I could not find an empty seat in the house. I would later find out that show had sold out. Maxwell went through a catalogue of his hits beginning with “Ascension” then gliding through such classics as “Til the Cops Come Knockin'”, “Fortunate,” and “Whenever Wherever Whatever.” Perhaps the highlight of his set was when he stopped the show to announce that there were not enough panties on his stage. To this the women responded by hurling undergarments of all sizes towards the soul star. In the midst of his rousing set, Maxwell even dared to debut several unheard songs from his upcoming album to the delight of his fans. Even more impressive was that for someone who had been musically quiet (relatively) for the last couple of years, Maxwell never seemed uncomfortable on stage. Not even for a second. Maxwell is a truly gifted performer, and it was obvious his fans missed him dearly.
When super-producer James Jay Dee/J Dilla Yancey departed Slum Village in 2001, many hip-hop fans were left wondering what would become of the Detroit-based rap trio. There wasnt just the matter of replacing him behind the boards, but Dilla was also a phenomenal lyricist. On Trinity: Past, Present, and Future in the fall of 2002, a new face had joined the group. Diminutive it stature but blessed with colossal lyrical skill was Jason Elzhi Powers. The album would go on to sell close to 300,000 units powered by the hit single, Tainted; one the groups biggest records. By the third album (or the fourth by some accounts), there was another shift in the group, original member, Titus Baatin Glover would be the next to exit stage left. Leaving only Powers, and the final original member, RL T3 Altman. Detroit Deli: A Taste of Detroit, sold half of its predecessor despite being powered by a monster single, Selfish, which featured Kanye West. The album would be the groups last on a major label, relegating them back to national independent status. Their next effort, Slum Village, achieved a mere fraction of the groups former success. T3 describes the roller coaster ride, Its mostly due to member changes, a lot of member changes, a lot of label changes. He profoundly states, Those are the main reasons that it seems like we have to start over every time. After a decade or more in the music industry, Slum Village persists; they have a mixtape coming out this year, and a new full-length album next year. However, right now, both members are taking time to explore themselves. Enter Elzhis The Preface.Talking in My Sleep – ElzhiElzhi has released a number of mixtapes in his career including Witness My Growth and Europass, but this is his first full-length album. The Preface is sort of the beginning of my story, you may see a preface at the beginning of a book, begins Elzhi. This is my life. My book of life. His fellow group member T3 elaborates, El always was a solo artist, seeing him branch out and do his thing is a blessing. There is more to come, he has to carve out a niche for himself, as Elzhi, which is what he always wanted to do.
Cats like me, like Royce Da 59 or like Guilty Simpson if you put us back in the early 90s, I feel like we would be looked at as extremely legendary. But now, there is a different feel to music. Music is more simplistic now. Lyrics have been replaced with swagger. Elzhi
The album was released by Fat Beats, a large New York and Los Angeles based distributor. Fat Beats is also the label home of Black Milk, who produced 14 of the albums 16 tracks. Says Bill Sharp, the labels VP of Operations: We’ve been trying to work with Elzhi as a solo artist for years, as it’s been apparent that he’s one of the best emcees out. Holding the title as one of Detroit and the rap industry periods best lyricists fits Elzhi. There are a lot of people out here who are really rapping, Mario Butterfield, a Detroit-based photographer and graphic artist, remarks, Elzhi can really rap circles around these really rappers. That label has a double-edged sword, Certain people are slow to catch what I do, but, overall its a great thing. I pride myself on trying to raise the bar every time, says Elzhi. As far as the game goes, cats like me, like Royce Da 59 or like Guilty Simpson if you put us back in the early 90s, I feel like we would be looked at as extremely legendary. But now, there is a different feel to music. Music is more simplistic now. Lyrics have been replaced with swagger.Transitional Joint – ElzhiEl captures his nostalgic feelings on Growing Up, raised by his step-father after his mother passed away, he always brings a bit of nostalgia to every project he completes. Guess you could say, I was saved by Hip-Hop young, he raps, Reciting F**k the Police, I got my lip popped, whoda thought Id rise from the bottom to the tip-top.The top is where Elzhi is leading his city. All of the artists in the Michigan Hip-Hop scene are pushing each other, and in order to stand out, they know that they have to be at the top of their game, states Sharp. There is such a wealth of talent in Detroit that new stars could be emerging for years.” That is part of the excitement of the Detroit Hip-Hop scene which is quickly becoming a movement. Its great to see where we are as far as Hip-Hop, there were a lot of records that came out this year, and a lot of artists are doing songs, and even albums together, adds Elzhi whose The Preface features over a half dozen Detroit artists and all Detroit production. That shows that we have grown out of our old mentality, instead of pulling each other down, we are lifting each other up. Elzhi is planning to record two full-length collaborative albums; one with Phat Kat and one with Royce Da 59. With the latter he engages in a lyrical death-match on The Prefaces Motown 25. Elzhi has always been a dynamic rapper. We went to the same school for our last year, but I didnt meet him until the Hip-Hop Shop, remembers Butterfield who attended high school with the MC. He looked real plain and simple. Like, This guy cant hurt a fly. Butterfield continues, Proof called him up, and he rapped over the entire instrumental, like three minutes. The whole time he rapped, nobody said anything, the hip hop shop was completely quiet. Nobody could do that, not even Eminem.Lyricism is in full demonstration on The Preface. On Colors, he is teaching a class of students, using colorful metaphors throughout: They sell purples through Blackberrys, with the Bluetooth. By the end, the listener feels like they actually did learn something. There are no come here, girl singles, like those that Slum Village had always been known for. The Preface introduces an MC who after this album will need no introduction. As for Slum Village, even Baatin is writing, and rumored to possibly rejoin the group. Both Elzhi and T3 confirm that they are working on new material. While T3 has a solo album coming out in 2009, The Night Gallery LP, they are also recording a mixtape and plan to release a new album next year and are currently making sure that their business paperwork is taken care of. We are still in the house, we are still getting better, says Elzhi, We are still making new music, The Ess is still good.
Back in the public spotlight less than one month since his release from an Augusta, GA burn unit, DJ AM is heading back to work.
The celebrity disc jockey, born Adam Goldstein, announced Tuesday (October 14) that he will join Jay-Z on three upcoming tour dates.
AM will kick off his duties as Jay-Zs show DJ in Los Angeles tonight (October 15) during a special performance that will serve as the official re-opening of the Hollywood Palladium theater.
The legendary venue was closed for renovations in 2007, after 27 years as a Sunset Boulevard staple, when it was purchased by Live Nation.
The Grand re-opening event will also feature a 12-piece band backing Jay-Z and DJ AM. Speaking to People magazine, AM referred to the Jay-Z dates as the biggest thing thats happened in my career, adding that he saw Jay as the greatest rapper in the world.
According to AMs publicist, Jenni Weinman, he will also appear with the former Def Jam president in Houston on October 16 and on October 25 in Charlottesville, VA.
No additional dates have been released at this time.
In related news, DJ AM was the guest of honor at a special charity event in LA on Tuesday hosted by Mark Ronson, Steve Aoki, Mix Master Mike and other celebrity DJs.
Proceeds from the party will benefit the families of the four victims of the tragic plane crash that left AM and former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.
The September 19 crash in Columbia, SC took the lives of pilots Sarah Lemmon, 31 and 52-year-old James Bland, as well as Barkers close friends Chris Lil Chris Baker and Charles Che Still, who worked with the drummer as his assistant and bodyguard respectively.
Earlier this week, Barker communicated with fans for the first time via a MySpace featured artist blog.
In addition to posting photos of himself in his Los-Angeles-area hospital bed and sharing details of his recovery, he also gave fans an insight into his personal grief.
I would give up anything to have them here with us today, healthy and happy, Barker said of Baker and Still. To call them my employees does them such a disservice, as they were so much more than that. Chris was my best friend before anything else, and I can never put into words how much he will be missed. Che was an amazing person as well, and I was honored to have him in my life.
Barker is set to undergo his seventh surgery on Monday (October 20).
The NFL has suspended Cowboys cornerback Adam Pacman Jones indefinitely for his role in an alcohol-induced brawl with his bodyguard on October 7. The bodyguard, assigned by the Cowboys to keep Jones out of trouble, was seen arguing with the troubled star moments before witnesses allege Jones attacked him in a u##### stall. At minimum the suspension will be for the next 4 games, with Commissioner Goodell making a final length decision on November 16. Jones latest suspension comes just six weeks after being reinstated from a year-long suspension.
As the U.S. Presidential race rounds the corner and enters its final stretch, what better time for one of Raps underground favorites to release his long-awaited major label debut. Fresh off this past summers Rock The Bells Tour and a hot 9th Wonder helmed mix-tape Sweet Lord, the L.A. native and Living Legends member comes back with a mature edge on his seventh solo album MURS For President (Warner Brothers).
MURS is a unique voice in West Coast Rap and always brings the good vibes, however this time around it seems that too much high-profile hand-pumping combined with uneven production may have hurt his run for Raps White House.
On Im Innocent MURS starts off strong with the help of Old Faithful aka 9th Wonder. The renown beatsmith provides his umpteenth soulful soundscape as MURS explains how he still gets hated on even though hes spreading love, Anti-thug / And anti-drugs / Brought peace to the party / And got anti-love. MURS sounds equally in his comfort zone on the infectious, feel-good ode to his long-time girl Me And This Jawn as well as the flute and scratch-driven The Science.
Things take a turn for worse when the L.A. underground stalwart tries to get his shine on with commercial heavyweights like Snoop Dogg and Will.I.Am. A perfect example of this misstep is the Will.I.Am assisted LookinFly as the club-friendly track fits the emcee like a poorly-tailored suit. He sounds out of his element trying to get jiggy with the Black Eyed Peas over cheesy canned drums and synths, coupled with a corny chorus, Im looking fly / Ooh! / Im bout to spread my wings!
MURS everyman verses and laid back demeanor have always sounded best when accompanied by soulful, organic production (Murrays Revenge), and while although overall the album is a respectable effort, the predominantly commercial sound that grips it ends up taking the wind out of MURS sail. Theres no doubt that MURS would be a strong selection on the ballot, however with this release most Hip-Hop voters would be expecting a little more from the man they voted into office.

After a phenomenal year that saw the label release Lil Waynes blockbuster smash Tha Carter III, Cash Money Records is poised to move its success to the pop arena.
An integral part of this new direction is the 25 year-old, alternative singer/songwriter Kevin Rudolf, who this past summer hit the Billboard Pop Top 10 with the Lil Wayne assisted Let It Rock.
With support from Universal Republic Records CEO Monte Lipman, Slim explained that Cash Moneys primary 2009 focus is making the label a music fans one stop for quality Hip-Hop, Soul, Rock and Pop.
Kevin Rudolf is about to roll out another great chapter of the Cash Money legacy, he proposed. Monte and Avery Lipman have proven time and time again they know how to break one of a kind artists like Kevin whose creativity is his greatest asset. We look forward to teaming up with their great staff to make Kevin a force to be reckoned with in rap, pop, rock and beyond.
Despite Kevin Rudolfs resume already including the names Justin Timberlake, David Banner, Nelly Furtado, and the Black Eyed Peas, Slim is aware that his label must discard the image heavy branding normally utilized to push Hip-Hop artists.
It helps that Lil Waynes name appears on the label, too, but it also demonstrates the rappers crossover appeal. Rudolfs sound is more akin to Justin Timberlake than anything street cred, Williams recently told Variety Magazine. [The rap and pop world] are much different. Rap and image go hand in hand; you have to make people know who the artist is. Pop and rock, get a hit record and youre on.
Kevin Rudolfs debut album In the City is set for release on November 25.

A lawyer Corey C-Murder Miller filed papers in court on Friday (October 10) seeking a brief postponement of the rappers murder trial, which was scheduled to being today (October 14).
Jury selection was to begin today, but Millers lawyer Ron Rakosky seeks to delay the trial due to the upcoming elections and the fact that presiding Judge Martha Sassone, who oversaw Millers first trial, is seeking re-election.
According to New Orleans Times-Picayune, Millers opponent Ellen Kovach has attacked Sassones decision to grant Miller a second trial during her bed to unseat Sassone, an 18-year-veteran of the 24th Judicial District Court.
Miller is charged with the January 12, 2002 shooting death of 16-year-old Steve Thomas inside of Club Platinum, a defunct nightclub in Harvey.
A jury convicted the popular rapper of the murder in September of 2003 and he was subsequently sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison.
Months later, Sassone overturned the conviction after it was revealed that prosecutors withheld key evidence and expunged the criminal records of several of their key witnesses, in exchange for testimony.
Sassones ruling led to a three year battle between Millers defense and prosecutors, which ended in the State Supreme Court upholding Sassones decision in March of 2006.
Miller is free on $500,000 bond and was on work release and allowed to travel under conditions and work.
In July, Miller was placed under full house arrest, while awaiting his second trial for the murder. Millers lawyer Ron Rakosky is seeking to delay the rappers trial until after the November 4 elections.
He has also been granted a subpoena ordering Kovach to provide any campaign materials, which he labeled inflammatory rhetoric, that may could bias any potential jurors.
Judge Sassone has deferred the issue to the state Judiciary Commission.
Kovachs ad, which takes a swipe at Sassones decision, is below:
C-Murder’s latest video:
People jumping from windows. 90 year old woman commits suicide. A man killing his entire family and himself from fear that he would not be able to meet his fiscal obligations. While these are extreme examples of America’s uneasiness, they are actual incidents that happened out of the recent economic woes that have risen on a global scale. No one seems to be immune to this crisis from the boardroom to the block and rappers are no exception. East Coast, West Coast, Durty South, old school, or new school, our lives are all affected and AllHipHop took a moment to talk to your favorite rappers in regards to the economy. Below are their responses unedited and uninterrupted and in raw audio. between the nahmeans and nahmsayings there is actually some pretty solid responses. You be the judge. Peace.Big Boi “Right now I think..right now it’s definitely a need for something new to get in there. Somebody that’s gon’ really do something for the people and not just for the rich. Hopefully we can get Obama in there to clean it up and see what’s going on because it’s definitely a mess right now.”Bun B “I think it’s terrible man. The government is getting ready to print up $700 Billion dollars of worthless paper. It has no value, it has no commodity to back it. I mean there’s no gas, there’s no oil behind this money;they just printing paper. The dollar is already devalued as it is. All they doing is making it harder to be an American right now. They really need to get their mind right. I’m very sad that they passed that.”?uestlove “I want to know all the ballers in Hip-Hop, how are they affected? We’re fine, our FDIC, our stuff is cool, but I want to know, I want to see that Forbes top 20 list if they’re still alive.”Mac 10 “It’s a recession, huh? I mean you gotta change your hustle up;you gotta diversify. You gotta do a couple thangs; a couple different thangs. You just can’t be one thing anymore, you gotta have four or five different things going. We gotta eat; we can’t quit eating no matter what state the world is in. We gotta get money”Fat Joe “It’s terrible. It’s a recession, which means we gotta vote for Barack Obama if we want to change what’s going on in this country economically. Eight more years of the Republicans means I move to South America, Ciao!”Juelz Santana & Jim Jones “It’s bad out there; It’s hard out there, it’s hard for a pimp. I hear they about to cut that $700 Million dollar check though. We need that stimulus badly.”Uncle Luke “It’s serious; It’s real bad right now. Everyday I look at the news, you know I’m a news junkie anyway; a political junkie. It’s just serious but just like any bad football team or bad basketball team or bad baseball team, they always give the job to a Black man and he’ll fix it.”B-Real “It’s ridiculous man, they need to come up with a solution fast and hopefully one of these guys that gets in has some sort of plan to get us out of the problems going on right now. Republicans have done some pretty bad damage the last eight years so it’s gotta get cleaned up. So good luck to whoever has that responsibility on their back.”Trugoy of De La Soul “Oh man! I can feel the money jumping out my pocket right now. It’s crazy out there. It’s unfortunate that we’re in the situation that we’re in. All we can do is hope and work towards and vote towards a change. We’re going through a lot. We all know where we are. It’s about now doing something about it. So being active and putting the right person in office and hopefully we’ll find a way.”Gym Class Heroes “I’m rich…nah, I’m just kidding, I’m not really. It’s kind of sad that right before you know Bush knows he’s on his way out, he’s like ‘Oh, yea, I’m gonna close a bunch of banks and we owe a lotta money.’ It’s like oh yeah why didn’t you tell us this a long time ago, you know so that we could have tried to fix it ourselves? But now, I mean, at the same time it’s things like this that I feel like… I’d like to feel we had control of it but at the end of the day, it’s out of our hands, and it’s a sad situation but hopefully somebody will get into office and we can clean it all up.”Q-Tip “Well the $850 Billion that the Senate put forth [Ed note-only person that night with an accurate dough count] bill passed, I mean it’s tricky man. It’s a very, very trying time. I just hope that the people that have small businesses, the people who are staying employed, who pay their taxes, they work hard. They want to fill their gas tank. They want to put a lil’ something aside yunno, to send their kids to school or whatever will still have the opportunity to do that her in this country. I mean we’ve been dealing with the last 15years, 20 years the greed of a lot of the executives on Wall Street and then all these corporations and businesses swoop in putting extra 0’s on they checks and just expenditures that didn’t need to be and now we, the people are paying the price of it. It’s not fair. The American people should be angry.”Cee-lo “It’s unfortunate but it’s our reality and you have to deal with reality head on, so there’s no denying it. We all are affected by it;we’re all suffering from it, so we need a solution and we need it to be put in effect as soon as possible. Of course we know solutions, as all things, are a process, you know? So we are growing and I think we’re feeling growing pains.”Too $hort “I feel like the greed has finally caught up to us. It’s not even a point of how it can be fixed in my mind, it’s just more or less, I just kinda felt like something wasn’t right about how we want to have all these things that we didn’t buy; that we don’t really own and we want to borrow and make payments in it and I just remember a few years back, when it was a lot of talk in the air that a little money will get you anything yunno? Flip you some paperwork and you can get whatever you can get for just anybody.I just head somebody say really if you get behind on some payments in a house where you had no equity then what would you do? You just move out. You wouldn’t care about the loan. We feeling the afteraffects of all that lust and greed and all that giving away invisible money. It’s kinda messed up. And you add that with the afteraffect of September 11th, with the war and the gas prices and everyone affected by the gas prices it’s just…it just makes me feel like I’m.. I’m all for a change of party in the White House. I am.” Busta Rhymes “I think it’s horrible. I think it was done intentionally so that they can start introducing and implementing new things like the AMERO and the national ID card and things like that. They doing things right now and I hope people pay closer attention to what’s going on. A long time ago, Mexico, Canada, and the United States became one. So they trying to one world government this side of the planet and all that.I don’t want to get into the conspiracy talk but you know I’m good for that. I’m good for that, you know what I’m saying. Ever since The Coming album in ’96, when I told people it was only 5 years left. 2001 you saw what happened downtown, that was 5 years later. In 1998 the cover of Extinction Level Event was what happened downtown, so it’s like the information is out there, it’s just people don’t pay attention to it because at the time, if you pay attention too early, they try to make you look like you bugged out ;you crazy or something’s wrong with you. You’re just a conspiracy theorist.I just feel like you know, it’s time the people see that things come to pass. Don’t ignore anything. Even if they may not come to pass, pay attention to it because at the end of the day, it’s better to be safe than sorry. So you can look at these things and be like “What If?” Pay attention to the ‘What Ifs?'”Additional reporting by Gina Torres
