Sunday Selection: The Keri Hilson Collabs (R. Kelly and Lil Wayne)

I’ve been checking out Keri Hilson ever since my editor put a bug in my ear about her earlier this year. Now that she has emerged from behind the scenes to develop herself as an R&B artist, I’m watching her every move. Keri’s written songs for artists such as Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears, and Usher. And now that she’s planning to release her own solo album, I’m curious to know what else she has to offer. Can her voice and star power reach the level of her song writing abilities? Will she make the cut and reach the level of a Rihanna or a Beyonce, or merely just fade to the waste side like Mya or Amerie? I guess time will only tell. After all, Keri Hilson seems to be getting a good response and people have good things to say about her. As a plus, Keri is a hottie – minus the wack hair cut. While her first single “Energy” is doing well, in weeks to come she will need to release a second single. And if you like Keri Hilson, like I have come to like Keri Hilson, you’re interested to know what direction she’ll head in next.So this week, I’ve selected two collaborations that she completed with two top artists. Not to say that either of these would be her next single, but let’s just say hypothetically one of them would be. Which one would you choose? One track is titled “Shake It Like A Dawg” featuring R. Kelly and the other is “Turn Off” featuring Lil Wayne. Did I mention I love a good ol’ duet this week? Wait, I just did! LOL…On “Shake It Like A Dawg” Keri sings about how she’s the sh*t and the guys go crazy for her, all while making her want to shake it like a dawg. Then R. Kelly adds insult to injury in the song, as he goes on to talk about how he’s falling in love because she shakes it like a dawg. In my opinion that’s some of the stupidest sh*t I’ve ever heard. Shake it like a dawg? Are you f**kin’ kiddin’ me? Was this all these two could come up with to express how they feel about dancing in the club? I want to say this to Keri Hilson – despite R. Kelly’s shortcomings, he is a musical genius. Don’t let today’s obsession with the female backside let you dumb down your musical creativity and let you miss the mark. In my opinion, you could have made better use of R. Kelly. That’s too much talent in one room to come up with a song like this. And furthermore, Keri, you’ve created masterpieces, but I guess this is one of those pieces of work you’ll look back and ask yourself, “What was I thinking?” In all, is song has a dope beat but zero substance.  “Shake It Like a Dawg” – Keri Hilson featuring R. Kelly

Shake It Like A Dawg (P###. By Polow Da Don) – Keri Hilson Ft. R. KellyMoving right along, let me elaborate on “Turn Off,” which is ironically what “Shake It Like A Dawg” did. In this song, Keri talks about what turns her on and off. It’s pretty simple, she puts it out there what a guy can do to make her like him and what he can do to make her turn the other way. The first time I heard Lil Wayne’s verse on this track I thought it was sub par, but when I went back to listen for a second time I just realized it was typical Lil Wayne: creative punch lines and simply swaggerdosish (yes, I made up that word).“Turn Off” – Keri Hilson featuring Lil Wayne

Turn Off (Feat Lil Wayne) – Keri HilsonSo again, hypothetically speaking, if either of these songs were to be pegged for Keri’s second single, which would you choose? I think it’s obvious what my choice is. “Turn Off” gets my vote… Until next week y’all take a listen to this week’s Sunday Selections – “Shake It Like A Dawg” and “Turn Off”

OUT OF BOUNDS: Lil Wayne’s ESPN Blog, Charles Haley Wildin’, Week 4 Picks

Lil Wayne’s ESPN Blog

When we dropped the Week 02 edition of OUT OF BOUNDS, Haughville asked why I didn’t have any Hip-Hop news about the athletes. To be honest, we’re here to talk football; I leave the Hip-Hop news to the experts. But, I will keep an eye out for any Hip-Hop related news of interest when it comes to sports for future articles.

Well today is your lucky day Haughville, I got some Sports/Hip-Hop new for you this week.

The online edition of ESPN the Magazine debuted Lil Wayne’s blog this week and truthfully speaking, it’s not bad.  Lil Wayne is a big sports fan, so it’s going to be interesting to see what he brings to the table in the weeks to come about the world of sports. I’ll definitely be on the lookout.

Clinton Portis vs. Brian Mitchell

First, did anyone catch the little war of words between Redskins RB Clinton Portis and former NFL RB Brian Mitchell on John Thompson’s radio show from last week? It got real heated and one point, Thompson just lost control of the show.

If you haven’t heard it, click here to listen and to discuss it click here to check out the thread in the Cheap Seats.

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week for Week 05

Poll Answers

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week

Sunday, 9/28/08, 4pm

Washington Redskins (2-1) at Dallas Cowboys (3-0)

Texas Stadium, Irving, TX

If you think the Eagles/Cowboys game was a battle, wait until this game starts. The Redskins always seem to step their game up when they play the Cowboys, so I’m looking for this game to be a battle until the end.

The Cowboys are the better team but this game is going to be close. Coach Zorn and the rest of the team know the importance of this game, so they’re going to throw everything they have at the Cowboys, including the kitchen sink.

If the Skins are going to win this game they have to keep the Cowboys’ offense off  the field by controlling the ball and on defense, they have to slow down the running game and force Tony Romo into some mistakes.

They Cowboys just have to keep doing what they’ve been doing for the past three weeks: continue to move the ball on the ground to open up the passing game and avoid mental mistakes.

I’m not a fan of either team, but I look forward to this match-up every year. This is going to be a good game.

My Pick: Cowboys

Sunday, 9/28/08, 1pm games

Green Bay Packers (2-1) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1)

Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

Most people have the Bucs winning this game, not I. Although Brian Griese is playing well and the defense has been solid, this is still an older team.

The Packers are still feeling the sting of the loss to the Cowboys game, so  look for them to use that as motivation on Sunday. Plus, the Packer’s offense has youth n its side and it may be too much for the older, more experienced Buccaneer’s defense.

My Pick: Packers

Houston Texans (0-2) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2)

Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Jacksonville, FL

The league made it real difficult for you to bet on the Texans this year. With the exception of the rescheduled Raven’s game, the Texans have or will play a playoff team from last season. Good luck with that Gary Kubiak.

The Jags are the better team on both sides of the ball.  The Texans WRs are solid, but that’s it.  This looks to be a long day for the Texans.

My Pick: Jaguars

Atlanta Falcons (2-1) at Carolina Panthers (2-1)

Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC

Statistically, these two teams are pretty much evenly matched.

I’m going with the Panthers here because of their passing offense. The Panthers’ passing game will be the key factor in this game. With the return of Steve Smith, look for the Panthers to test the Falcons’ secondary and air it out.

My Pick: Panthers

Arizona Cardinals (2-1) at New York Jets (1-2)

Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

Brett Favre is listed as “questionable” with a sore left ankle, but he’s going to play. It still won’t be enough to stop the Cards.

The Cards are moving the ball well on offense with Kurt Warner at the helm. His veteran leadership is beginning to show in the offense’s play making abilities.

The Jets spent a lot of money in the offseason on offense and defense, but it looks as though the Jets aren’t getting their money’s worth. Look for the Jets to go 1-3 after this Sunday’s game.

My Pick: Cardinals

San Francisco 49ers (2-1) at New Orleans Saints (1-2)

Superdome, New Orleans, LA

The 49ers have been impressive as of late. They blew out the Lions last Sunday and it looks like Mike Martz’s offense seems to work with the 49ers’ offensive personnel.

Like the rest on the world, I watched the Saints make a comeback on the Broncos, only to fall short, so I can see why some people have the Saints winning this weekend. Not the kid. Yeah, I know the 49ers are my favorite team, but it’s their defense that has been impressive and keeping them in games. That’s the reason why I picked them to win.

The 49ers’ defense is ranked 9th in the league while the Saints’ defense is ranked 28th. Look for the 49ers’s defense to overwhelm the Saints’ offense and march out of New Orleans with the win.

My Pick: 49ers

Cleveland Browns (0-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (0-3)

Paul Brown Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

In the beginning of the week, the Browns had QB Derek Anderson on a short leash.  Then they had a change of heart. Don’t worry; they’re not the only team going through some internal turmoil. We’ll discuss more on that later.

For now, I’m going with the Bengals for the win. Neither team has any defense at all, but the Bengals offense is starting to click. It began to show signs of life towards the end of their game against the NY Giants, and that momentum will carry over in this game and with the Browns’ offense looking flat at the moment; the Bengals are in a good position to get their 1st win of the season.

My Pick: Bengals

Minnesota Vikings (1-2) at Tennessee Titans (3-0)

LP Field, Nashville, TN

The Titans are ranked 3rd in total defense.  The Vikes are ranked 7th in total defense.  So it’s going to come down to whichever offense makes the least mistakes.

I’m going with the Titans in this game. Kerry Collins has been managing the game well and has had more recent action than Gus Frerotte.

Also, I don’t see RB Adrian Peterson having a big game against this solid Titans’ defense.

My Pick: Titans

Denver Broncos (3-0) at Kansas City Chiefs (0-3)

Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO

The Broncos squeak out their 3rd win of the season against to the Saints due mainly to a missed field goal.  That’s the 2nd game in a row where “lady luck” was on their side.

Fortunately, Broncos’ fans won’t have to worry about a visit from “lady luck” this week because they’re playing the Chiefs. The Chiefs are just a mess at the moment, so this should be an easy game for the Broncos.

As long as they keep their guard up and avoid any comebacks, the Broncos have this game in the bag.

My Pick: Broncos

4pm games

San Diego Chargers (1-2) at Oakland Raiders (1-2)

McAfee Coliseum, Oakland, CA

The Chargers were not playing last week and last week’s win was what they needed to get this offense going. The Raiders tried to comeback on the Bills and lost on a last second FG.

With the Chargers finding their offense and the Raiders going through their internal turmoil, I have to go with the Chargers in this one.

Despite the 1-2 record, the Chargers have the 5th best offense in the league.  The Raiders’ defense is ranked 21st. With a new burst of energy on the offense; look for the Chargers to take it to the Raiders’ defense for the win.

My Pick: Chargers

Buffalo Bills (3-0) at St. Louis Rams (0-3)

Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO

Rams RB, Steven Jackson, is not happy with head coach Scott Linehan.  Linehan is on the hot seat and changes are needed, but you don’t bench your starting QB like that. You don’t pay him all of that money, just to ride the pine. He’s not the problem; the team on a whole is the problem. There are just too many gaps in the team that need to be filled.

With that said, I’m going with the Bills.  Their offense (13th overall) and defense (5th overall) is solid and if they keep it up, they just may make some noise in the AFC East. Look out Patriot fans, this may be the year the Bills will come at your team for the AFC East title.

The Rams don’t have it together this year so look for the Bills to put the hammer down on the Rams this Sunday.

My Pick: Bills

Sunday Night Football, 8pm

Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) at Chicago Bears (1-2)

Soldier Field, Chicago, IL

I have to confess, I am very impressed with the way the Eagles have been playing for the past 3 weeks.

Despite the Week 2 loss to the Cowboys, the Eagles have been doing the little things right.  They move the ball well through the air and on the ground and their defense comes at you from every angle.

The Bears are a “middle of the road” team from a statistical stand point on both offense and defense. Although they have a solid running back in Matt Forte, it won’t be enough against the league’s 4th best defense.  This looks to be a sweet homecoming for Donovan McNabb and the win will be icing on the cake.

My Pick: Eagles

Monday Night Football, 9/29/08, 8:30pm

Baltimore Ravens (2-0) at Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1)

Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA

After last week’s loss to the Eagles, the Steelers have some work ahead of them.

Ben Roethlisberger is hurting with a bum shoulder and with RB Rashard Mendenhall getting the start for the Steelers for the injured Willie Parker; the Ravens’ defense is licking their lips just to get at this squad.  Plus, it doesn’t help that Mendenhall gave the Ravens some bulletin board material.

The loss to the Eagles was tough for the Steelers.  Although the score was close, the Eagles beat them up bad and it’s going to take some time for the Steelers get it together.  Monday Night is the perfect time for the league’s best defense (Ravens) to take it to the Steelers and hold on to their lead in the AFC North.

My Pick: Ravens

Teams with Bye weeks: Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks

Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

A Bronx apartment recognized as the birthplace of Hip-Hop culture is expected to be sold next week.

Located at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the building’s landlord group plans to withdraw the property from the city’s moderate housing program, allowing the owners to pay off the building’s $5 million dollar balance.

The property will then be sold to high-profile real estate developer Mark Karasick, putting the future of the 100 families living there in doubt.

The tenants and partnered housing advocates attempted to block the sale by filing a lawsuit in the State Supreme Court.

Yesterday (September 26), the courts ruled against the groups and dismissed the suit. In the early 1970s, Kingston, Jamaica native and Hip-Hop founder Clive Campbell moved into the building.

There he quickly constructed a graffiti crew dubbed the Ex-Vandals, and took on his famous DJ moniker Kool Herc.

Exasperated by the gang violence that plagued the neighborhood, Herc and his sister Cindy began hosting parties in the building’s recreation room.

Utilizing two turntables and a guitar amp, Herc revolutionized music by isolating “the breaks” of popular records like James Brown’s “Give It Up or Turn It Loose,” Booker T and the MG’s “Melting Pot,” Babe Ruth’s “The Mexican,” and The Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache.”

This style of musical arrangement grew exponentially, attracting dancers (B-Boys and B-Girls) and fellow DJs and future Hip-Hop luminaries Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash.

Last year, New York officially christened the building “the birthplace of Hip-Hop” and declared it eligible for national and state registrars.

At the press time, the bank financing the sale on the property is unknown. According to reports, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is estimated to be sold for $7.5 million.

BG & Chopper City Boyz: Life In The Concrete Jungle (Album Review)

After leaving his former recording home over financial woes, BG manned up and showed that there is indeed life after Cash Money. In the process he put together his own New Orleans squad to represent his new movement. Originally consisting of BG, brother Hakim, VL Mike, Snipe and Gar, the crew released We Got This in 2007.

Now minus Hakim, and VL Mike who was tragically gunned down earlier this year, the crew returns with Life In The Concrete Jungle (KOCH). While this sophomore effort has a nice mix of laid back harmonic beats, the album is plagued by subpar lyricism and repetitive subject matter.

On “Keep It Real,” the group states that there are those who keep it real, and those who don’t; B.G. says he’ll stay to his beliefs. He even gives a shout out to T.I.P., urging authorities to stop being so hard on the ATL lyricist: “Safety comes first, that’s what he had them guns fo’ / So let him go, he aint did nothin’ wrong / He was one of the first helpin’ my people after the storm / He a standup dude / A real hood n**** / We all convicted felons but we still good n****s.”

“Bubble Gum” is a mid-tempo, Southern bounce club song reminiscent of Three 6 Mafia. Surely this song will get love in strip clubs but it does little to keep the momentum going. “Don’t Step On My White Feet” has Gar warning everyone not to step on his kicks with little creativity. Fellow Louisiana statesman Hurricane Chris also makes a guest spot on “Bizness” assuring listeners that he’ll do what he has to do even if it means resorting to violence.

The cliché “Dealer” glorifies hustling and life in the trap, while “My Life” featuring USDA member Bloodraw, simply states the words they recite are bred from real experiences. Lastly, “Be Kool,” provides a highlight with BG proclaiming that talks of a Hot Boys reunion are indeed true: “You want it, it’s a Hot Boy reunion in a minute / Turk be home in a minute / He had to do a bid, but he almost finished.”

Overall Life In The Concrete Jungle is a two-sided coin. It’s filled with tales of the glory and prosperity of life on the streets, as well as the dire consequences of being dedicated to hood life. While Gar and Snipe have their moments, B.G. usually saves the tracks that are dead in the water. Additionally the mix of flowing, mellow and hard hitting beats rescue those songs that even B.G. can’t help. Amid the album’s bright spots, the guys do what they do best but it’s not enough to survive in the music industry jungle much longer.

Unk Shooting For Success With ‘Second Season’

Inspired by support among his fans, rapper Unk is gearing up for the release of his upcoming album, Second Season.

The Big Oomp Records / KOCH Records set is the follow up to Unk’s 2006 debut Beat’n Down Yo Block, which featured the hits “Walk It Out,” and “2 Step.”

To date, both singles have sold 3 million ringtones and 2.6 million digital units combined.

The success of “Walk It Out” and “2 Step” resulted in equal good fortune for Beat’n Down Yo Block, which spent 74 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts.

As a result, Unk was named Billboard’s #1 top new Hip-Hop artist of 2007.

Guests for Second Season include Tennessee-based rap collective Three 6 Mafia, as well as singers Ray J and Sean Kingston.

The sophomore release represents a new chapter for Unk, who says the album “highlights the best beat makers in the country: Top Quality Productions, home of Big Oomp Records.”

“This album represents the world tour I’ve just come back from,” the rapper told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “I’ve been inspired by my fans and this record is for my fans.”

Fans will get their first taste of Second Season with the DJ Montay-produced first single “Show Out.”

A video for the song, which was shot in Atlanta and directed by Raging Nation Films director Dale “Rage” Resteghini, is scheduled to debut on music video outlets in the coming weeks.

Unk’s Second Season is slated to hit stores on Nov. 4.

Kanye West Avoids Felony Charges for Airport Scuffle

Despite avoiding felony charges for an incident with photographers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), rapper/producer Kanye West could face a lesser charge for his role in the scuffle.

Frank Mateljan, spokesman for the L.A. City Attorney’s Office, told Reuters that West could be charged with a misdemeanor from the incident.

“We’re in the process of reviewing the case that was sent to us, I don’t anticipate a decision until sometime next week,” Mateljan said.

Mateljan’s statement comes just days after West was arrested at LAX on Sept. 11, after he was videotaped rushing a photographer and grabbing his camera.

As the two struggled, the 31-year-old rapper threw the camera to the ground.

West, who was booked on suspicion of felony vandalism, was released from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division station in Culver City the same day on $20,000 bail.

West’s road manager, Don Crowley, was also arrested after he broke the photographer’s camera and a camera that belonged to a TMZ videographer.

West is due in court on Thursday (Oct. 2) for the incident.

Jay-Z Sued Over ‘I Will Not Lose’ Name

Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z and Iconix Brand Group, owner of Rocawear Clothing, are being sued in federal court on copyright infringement charges.

The case was filed last Thursday (September 18) in Georgia Northern District Court by I Will Not Lose, LLC, a company claiming that Iconix Brand Group and Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, adopted the exact same “I Will Not Lose” trademark.

Last March, Jay-Z sold the rights for Rocawear to Iconix Brand Group for $204 million.

Despite this, Carter is also named in the suit as it is believed by the plaintiff that he continues to oversee the product development, licensing, and marketing of Rocawear.

Last year, Rocawear launched an international “I Will Not Lose Campaign,” (www.iwillnotlose.org) where stars such as Chris Brown and Ciara gave accounts of how they overcame personal challenges before reciting the trademarked phrase “I Will Not Lose.”

I Will Not Lose, LLC (www.iwillnotlose.net) CEO Reggie Tucker alleges in the lawsuit that his company trademarked the brand first and were subsequently ignored throughout 2007 after attempts were made to settle the matter out of court.

The plaintiff is seeking an undisclosed amount of damages for the dilution of their trademark.

At press time calls to attorneys representing I Will Not Lose, LLC were not returned and Jay-Z could not be reached for comment.

Hip-Hop Rumors: JAY-Z & OASIS (NOEL GALLAGHER) THE BEEF IS OVER!

TODAY’S RUMORS!

JAY-Z & OASIS (NOEL GALLAGHER) THE “BEEF” IS OVER!

Just a couple of days, we were talking and joking bout that parody video of Oasis dissing Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter.

For some reason, people thought illseed was a some sort of new fool that thought it was real. Nevertheless, it wasn’t.

This new video shows – in part – how fans and media can really hype stuff up to epic levels.

Case in point, the UK’s Radio1 interviewed Noel Gallagher of Oasis and let him hear “Jockin’ Jay-Z.” In the song. the mogul rapper says, “…I can’t play guitar/ Somebody should have told him I’m a f###### Roc star.”

It was all blown out of proportion. Jay-Z said he would be willing to work wit h Oasis and Noel said he was just speaking his mind.

Peep:

Oasis’ Wonderwall

RANDOM QUOTES FROM NOEL:

Addressing the Jay-Z situation

“I’ve hung out with Jay-Z in Tokyo. I’ve seen his show. It’s not my bag, but it’s all right. We have a mutual friend in Chris Martin. So I am a guy who doesn’t like hip-hop — shock, horror. I don’t dislike rappers or hip-hop or people who like it. I went to the Def Jam tour in Manchester in the ’80s when rap was inspirational. Public Enemy were awesome. But it’s all about status and bling now, and it doesn’t say anything to me.”

Noel can’t beef with Jay-Z…he’s too busy beefing with his own brother. Here is his take on a notorious bar fight involving brother Liam, who has proclaimed innocence in the melee.

“What? Are you f**king serious? He’s a born f**king liar. I wasn’t there at that bar in Munich, so I won’t cast aspersions. But I ask you, do you think Liam was helping clear away the glasses or assisting an old lady up the stairs when it all kicked off?”

On Hip-Hop fans:

“We have a lot in common with hip-hop. Apart from people pumping shotgun pellets into each other.”

Jam Master Jay’s Murder On America’s Most Wanted

More pressure is set to be put on the murderers of slain Hip-Hop icon and Run-DMC group member Jam Master Jay, when America’s Most Wanted features a segment on the DJ’s murder during an upcoming episode.

Sources have confirmed with AllHipHop.com that AMW is creating the segment on the pioneering DJ, who was gunned down on October 30, 2002, inside of his 24/7 recording studio, located in Hollis, Queens on Merrick Boulevard.

While many theories exist about how Jam Master Jay was shot and killed and why, no one has ever been charged in the slaying, which occurred with as many as six people present in the recording studio.

Those present in the studio included associates of Jam Master Jay: Uriel “Pretty Tony” Rincon, Mike B., Jay’s assistant Lydia Allen High and her brother Randy Allen.

While Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell, was sitting on a couch in the recording studio, two unknown assailants entered the recording studio and shot Jam Master Jay once in the back of the head.

Rincon was also shot in the leg by a stray bullet, but was not seriously wounded.

After the shooting, a number of suspects emerged – mostly Jay’s close friends in the studio who witnessed the murder – yet no one has ever been charged for one of the music industry’s most heinous crimes.

Even police detectives with the 103rd Police Precinct in Queens, as well as Jam Master Jay’s own mother have pointed to Jay’s inner circle as stonewalling the investigation.

In previous statements and interviews with AllHipHop.com, both Allen’s, as well as other suspects have denied involvement in the murders.

One person of interest officially emerged in the murder by the name of Tinard Washington, a child hood friend of Jam Master Jay, who was also implicated in the murder of Randy “Stretch” Walker.

Walker, who was present when Tupac Shakur was shot inside of the Quad Recording Studios, was machine gunned to death on a Queens street, after a high speed car chase.

Washington, who was also a childhood friend of Jam Master Jay, was implicated in the murders by unnamed witnesses.

He has previously denied his involvement in the murder of Jam Master Jay.

Jam Master Jay’s segment on America’s Most Wanted is currently in pre-production.

Peedi Crakk: The P. Crakk Commandments

Philly native Peedi Crakk is a standing survivor of one of the biggest breakups in Hip-Hop history. After signing to Roc-a-Fella Records in 2001 by way of Freeway, Peedi hit the ground running building a name for himself with fan favorites like “One for Peedi Crakk,” and star making appearances on songs like Freeway’s “Flipside.” It seemed like the self proclaimed “Prince of SP” was well on his way to superstar status but the breakup of the partnership behind the Roc-a-Fella Records dynasty left he and all the artists in a state of limbo. Once on Def Jam, Peedi’s debut album kept getting delayed. With no sign of daylight at the end of the tunnel Peedi kept himself in the public eye by touring with the Roots throughout 2006 and 2007, which spawned rumors of him joining the legendary Roots crew. Now free from the confines of a major label, Peedi Crakk is preparing to remind you why you know what sound the Mack makes with his long awaited debut album on Amalgam Digital, A Night in the Life. Feel free to reacquaint yourself with Peedi Crakk.AllHipHop.com: You became a solo artist after the infamous Roc-A-Fella break up. There was also what seemed to be a State Property break up during that same time. Can you talk about what went on during that period?Peedi: Well honestly, the group, we never really went our separate ways. It was just the company as a whole started to fall apart. Well, not the company but the CEO’s started to break away. Certain members of the State Property group were in relationships with certain CEOs. So Hov was going this way and Dame was going that way and it left us in a weird space. S**t felt uncomfortable because you didn’t want to seem like you going over there and have to deal with the “who’s side are you on?” so that led to us kind of straying away. Some of us was still working with Jay and some of us were working with Dame so it would appear to people like we broke up but we didn’t really break up. We were just all trying to find a direction to go in that we felt comfortable with. Freeway f/ Peedi Crakk “Flipside” Video

“To be honest with you, and I’m just speaking for myself, looking back at it now Dame Dash wasn’t as bad as I thought. He was wonderful business wise. It was just personally, I didn’t agree with some of the things he’d be doing.”

AllHipHop.com: In an interview I did with Beanie Sigel last year, he said he felt like things may have turned out different if he’d not been locked up at the time. Do you wonder if there was anything more you could’ve done to help the situation?Peedi: I tried. I remember myself attempting to hold it down to the best of my ability but, at the same time, I was one of the newest artists there so I really wasn’t sure what to do. I was looking to the other members and to Beans for more guidance as far as what decisions to make. It was weird though because, now that you mention it, that’s exactly how it went down. When that happened Beans had got locked up and we really had to make some big decisions on our own. Beans was away in the FEDs so we had to make some serious decisions. The kind that might make a big change in your career. Maybe thing would’ve been different if he was there.Peedi Peedi “Fall Back” VideoAllHipHop.com: Beans ended up going to the Dame Dash Music Group and you and a couple others went with Jay and Roc-A-Fella. Was that a conscious decision or is that just the way things fell through?Peedi: That’s just the way s**t fell through. To be honest with you, and I’m just speaking for myself, looking back at it now Dame Dash wasn’t as bad as I thought. He was wonderful business wise. It was just personally, I didn’t agree with some of the things he’d be doing. And it’s nothing personal. This is a business that we’re in. It’s just at the time, I was taking things more personal. So at the time I had a decision to either f**k with Dame and continue to go through the s**t I thought I was going through, which looking back, really wasn’t that bad. But at the time Jay was just the better decision to make. From the outside looking in that looked like a great place to be. So I wasn’t sure so I just said I’ll go with Jay. I didn’t really have a lot of experience working with him at the time but I just figured I didn’t want to be with Dame.

“…The album was there. The single was there. I just don’t think Def Jam or Jay-Z was pushing an artist like myself. But I can’t even take it personally because they wasn’t pushing nobody’s s**t.”

AllHipHop.com: What was it about Dame that bothered you so much?Peedi: It was just dealing with him on a personal level. But even now, looking back at it, Dame would’ve been the better business move to make. He was more of a risk taker, which I can’t say is a great thing, but it’s a good thing when you’re an artist who needs someone in a position of power who’s willing to take a chance. Jay’s not a risk taker. He’s more strategic. He watches what he does as far as when it comes to his credibility. At the time it was like, “nobody knows what to do, but the grass looks greener on the other side so I’m going to slide over there.”DJ Jazzy Jeff f/ Peedi Peedi “Brand New Funk 2K7” VideoAllHipHop.com: By the time you got to Def Jam you had already proven yourself to be a marketable artist. You even went so far as to change your name to Peedi Peedi to make yourself more mainstream friendly. Why did they still sit on the album?Peedi: That was crazy. I did everything I was supposed to do. I never was on their business schedule. I was on my own clock. Then I started to tighten up and get adjusted more to meeting the deadlines and all that. But the album was there. The single was there. I just don’t think Def Jam or Jay-Z was pushing an artist like myself. But I can’t even take it personally because they wasn’t pushing nobody’s s**t. I just feel like I didn’t get a fair shot. I didn’t get a fair run or at least the shot everybody thought P. Crakk deserved. I’m not the type to cry over spilled milk. S**t like that just made me stronger. I never believed in giving up or letting anybody else make me or break me. Me being in this position that I’m in now is going to make me the artist that I’m destined to be. I can’t reach my best with multi-million dollar people holding me down. When I say holding me down I mean having them as my backbone. I need to grow [on] my own. I just took it all as a blessing man.AllHipHop.com: Given your prior relationship with Jay-Z, did you expect more from them than what you were given? Peedi: Yeah, I did; instead of them handling me like a new artist that was just signed that an A&R had brought to the table. I was there for a while already. With him knowing what type of person I am already, knowing the type of artist I am already, at least looking at it business wise, he would’ve gave me a fair shot. I can’t really answer the question as to why he did that or why he made the decisions he made. I can give you a whole bunch of ‘ifs” and “maybes” but I really have no idea. I just know what didn’t happen and I know what I did. I played my part. I did what I had to do. The Roots f/ Peedi Crakk & Dice Raw “Get Busy” VideoAllHipHop.com: During the time you were going through the problems at Def Jam you were doing mixtapes and touring with The Roots. There was even talk of you joining them. How’d that come about?Peedi: That was never solid. Nobody ever spoke about it. That was all some Internet stuff about me becoming a member. I was on two albums in a row so I guess it became a pattern. People was like “P. Crakk is one of The Roots.” But to get back to how that all happened, Black Thought, and this s**t amazes me, is a fan of mines. He would call me to the studio and just ask me to get on joints. His people would just call and be like, “Yo, Black wants you to come down to the studio.” It’s an honor to get a call like that. I’d just go down there and knock the joints out and they turned up on the album two times in a row. As far as being an honorary member, there was no paperwork or nothing. They just love me and I love them back. It’s something that went unsaid. We never spoke about it but they know I’m a part of their family. There’s no need for no paper work and all that. They just always welcome me. AllHipHop.com: There was also a lot of buzz on the Internet that your album was going to be called Camel Face Hunting Season. What made you change it?Peedi: It was never entitled Camel Face Hunting Season. Honestly, some big site started that s**t. My young boy J-Rock, the one who runs my website, he posted that picture on my page just playing around. The website, Media Takeout I think, had taken it and posted it up saying “This is Peedi Crakk’s new album cover.” Like why would I call my album Camel Face Hunting Season? I wouldn’t do that. That’s not the type of music I do on a album. You know what my album’s going to consist of; more uptempo, feel-good, party joints…a couple joints for the chicks and all that type of s**t. But to be honest, I was still a little in my frustration mode and I found the idea amusing so I started to entertain it but it never was the official title. The title is A Night in the Life. It never really was that but that’s what the Internet made it into.MORE TOWELS – Peedi CrakkAllHipHop.com: With your prior history you probably could’ve gone to a major with the album. What made you choose Amalgam Digital?Peedi: Just to be independent. Now that I got the claws of Def Jam out of my back I’m able to do whatever I want. I never got dropped from Def Jam or Roc-A-Fella. They were trying to keep me there for the length of my contract and make me fulfill the s**t. I owed them like $800,000. My lawyer ended up politicking and getting me out of the deal. Amalgam came along and offered me a nice, one album deal which was good because I wasn’t trying to do nothing more than a one album deal. They had a nice advance and I had full creative control over my whole s**t. The most important thing was it was a one shot deal so I wasn’t locked in with no company and everything else was there so I took it.AllHipHop.com: What can fans expect when they finally get to hear this album?Peedi: The fans that love me will love this. This album is 100 percent Peedi Crakk. It’s 100 percent P. Crakk so if you been waiting for the album it’s definitely going to be worth the time you waited. The Last Word: Eva Mendes Reveals Naked Fetish, Aubrey O’Day Reveals a P### Fetish, and Mariah Reveals a Bible Fetish?

What’s good, weekenders? Man, what a slow week. If it wasn’t

for the government planning a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street and the

financial system at the potential expense of us taxpayers, Obama and McCain’s

first presidential debate being in danger of cancellation because of said

financial crisis and Clay Aiken finally coming out, then this would’ve been a

week to go through the motions on. Not that I don’t. I, like everybody else

work for those two free days, but I digress…

Get well wishes go out to Natalie Cole, who was hospitalized

and being treated for Hepatitis C. Shout out to the sounding boards for being

available 24/7.

And now it’s time for…the Last Word for the week ending

Sept. 26, 2008.

1. Eva Mendes Finds Naked Comfort at Home

It’s a fact that beautiful women in Hollywood are a dime a

dozen. But beautiful women who strip in front of the camera without the aid of

a body double are rare. So don’t count Eva Mendes among those who choose to

cover up for their close up. For the right role, the movie star is willing to

bare all as she told Elle magazine that

on-screen nudity “just isn’t that big a deal.”

In fact, Mendes, who recently starred in a risque Secret

Obsession ad for Calvin Klein, is so comfortable with her body that she goes au

natural while in the confines of her home.

“I walk around the house naked— I do!” the 34-year-old

looker shared. “One of my girlfriends always jokes, ‘I’m coming over with

someone, so please come to the door dressed.’”

Something tells me Eva may be getting a lot more visitors

who are just as “revealing” as she is. You know what they say. She may be

having neighbors over to borrow more than a cup of sugar.

2. Tyler Perry Feeds the Hungry

Madea and a string of hit plays and movies may have helped

Tyler Perry live the good life, but the actor/playwright/mogul hasn’t forgotten

about giving back to those in need.

According to The Associated Press, the entertainer spent his day (Tuesday) unloading

and packaging food he donated to feed more than 1,000 families at the Hosea

Feed the Hungry and the Homeless care center in Atlanta. The act of good will

hits home for Perry, who grew up the poor son of a carpenter in New Orleans and

was homeless before his career took off.

“I’ve been out on the street, I know what it’s about,” the

filmmaker told the AP, adding that he

“had to do something” after feeling pulled to visit the center after hearing

about it on the news. “I couldn’t imagine doing that with children looking at

me for food.”

Kudos to Tyler for feeding the needy with food and good

deeds.

3. Christina Milian Occupies Myspace With New Record Deal

Looks like all that acting hasn’t prevented Christina Milian

from going back to her day job.

Billboard reports the

former Def Jam artist has signed a new deal with MySpace Records to release new

music. The first single from Milian’s upcoming album, the Madd

Scientist-produced “Us Against The World,” will hit Myspace airwaves on Oct. 6.

According to the 26-year-old singer, her return has been a

long time coming.

“I’ve been out of the game for one-and-a-half years, and I

think I’m long overdue for a comeback, so I’m treating this album like it’s my

last chance to make an impression. I’m competing with myself and being very

detailed,” Milian said. “Before, I had a label telling me what direction to go

in. Now, it’s my choice, so I’m being very particular about it and I’m really

excited.”

Despite having Kanye West as the only guest on her album,

Milian has lined up a string of producers for what she describes as a “very

feminine, strong and independent album,” including T-Pain, Cool and Dre, Jim

Jonsin, Toby Gad and Danja.

And while things didn’t work out with Def Jam, Milian is

optimistic as she sees MySpace as the start of a new chapter in her musical

life. In fact, she is thankful she “took the time off to check out what’s going

on.”

“Sometimes things don’t work out the right way, but I know I

work my butt off on my end,” Milian said. “As long as you know you worked hard,

you feel accomplished.”

Look for Milian’s MySpace Records debut to come out next

spring. If you prefer Christina in her acting mode you can catch her alongside

Matthew McConaughey when The Ghosts of Girlfriends hits theaters in February. Gamers can check out the

singer, who is currently filming the latest installment of the Bring

It On film series, as the lead in a live

action film made for the EA video game Need for Speed, which arrives in stores Nov. 28.

4. Mariah Carey Makes Time for the Bible; Becomes Hunger

Ambassador

With her busy schedule and hectic life, Mariah Carey seems

to have little time for anything except for relaxing with husband Nick Cannon

and catching a good night’s sleep. But the songstress did admit to setting

aside quality time for the Man Upstairs.

“The only book I make time to read is the Bible,” Carey told

Now magazine.

News of Mariah’s reading pastime comes as the singer was as

the latest Hunger Ambassador for the Yum! Foundation’s World Hunger Relief, an

annual effort that is dedicated toward raising money for the United Nations

World Food Program and bringing an end to starvation around the world. E!

Online reports that Mariah’s hunger

ambassador role will involve her appearing on print ads that will be featured

in more than 100 countries and 36,000 franchises.

Donors can contribute to the cause by going to any Yum!

Brands restaurants, including Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s and

A&W restaurants. Customers who make a donation will receive a free download

of the song “Love Story” from Carey’s latest album, E=MC2.

This year’s Hunger Relief effort will try to top the first

annual World Hunger Relief Week, which raised roughly $16 million for hunger

relief last year.

5. Denzel Washington Puts Kids On Top of Priority List

High gas prices, the economy and housing woes are front and

center on the list of issues the presidential candidates have on their radar.

Why not kids?

That’s what Denzel Washington wants people to keep in mind

as they prepare to elect a new leader of the free world. The Oscar winner

voiced his concerns in an article on CNN.com as he gave leaders a heads up on what he called “the crisis affecting

our children.”

“Young people account for more than 20 percent of violent

crimes in the United States, according to statistics cited by Duke University’s

Center for Child and Family Policy. Violent juvenile crime peaks between 3 and

4 pm, at the end of the school day,” said Washington, a national spokesman for

the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. “These facts are grim enough. Factor in

persistent patterns of poverty, gang activity, drug abuse and teenage

pregnancy, and you have a generation of Americans that will be unprepared

–  indeed, unable – to

meet the challenges posed by a complex world.”

With almost 30 percent of this year’s new high school class

dropping out before completing their education and childhood obesity rising by

300 percent since 1980, Washington is taking a stand to let people know how

important it is to personally get involved on behalf of young people.

“As citizens, we shouldn’t simply sit back and hope that

politicians stand up to the test,” the entertainer stated. “We can participate

in the political process, advocating for policies that will benefit the health,

education and well-being of young Americans, because we must do a better job of

preparing our youth to lead.”

Nuff said.

6. Aubrey O’Day Confesses Love of Dirty Text Messages and

P###

Never let it be said that Aubrey O’Day is shy. The Danity

Kane member proved to be an interesting interview subject for Complex magazine as she revealed her love of p### and all

things freaky.

When asked about talk of her being called a s###, O’Day

seemingly embraced the label, stating, “If I have to be ridiculed and called a

w#### and the party animal and the dumb girl for the rest of my career, I’m OK

with that. Because I love who I am. You’re going to have to interpret me however

you’re going to interpret me.”

And if that wasn’t enough, Aubrey expounded on her p### love

as she admitted to watching YouPorn and having one type of episode on her

favorite list.

“I usually watch Black guys doing White girls, that’s my

little fetish, even though in real life race isn’t a factor for me,” the diva

revealed, adding that she was quick to say that an Aubrey-featured p#### is not

on her to do list. “Really, I’m more turned on by watching the girls than the

guys. I love someone who looks like they’re really into sex.”

Note to the fellas: If you want to get on, O’Day’s good

side, try dirty texting.

“I would rather do dirty texting than have sex. I have a

shirt in my clothing line [Heart On My Sleeve] that says, ‘I Love Dirty

Texting,’” she said. “When you’re at dinner and you are listening to everybody

but you’re actually writing some dirty s**t, I love it! I’m so into that.”

Despite her solo escapades, O’Day stated the she is “very

dedicated to Danity Kane, and nothing I can ever do will conflict with my

respect, love, and dedication to that project.”

I’m so glad to hear that nothing will interfere with

Aubrey’s dedication to Danity Kane, despite rumors that she’s been kicked out.

After all, dedication is not what others expect of you. It’s what you can give

to others. Because giving is fundamental.

In Other Words…

* Deborah Cox is making her return to R&B after belting

jazz tunes last year on a Dinah Washington tribute album. The singer, who is

best known for her 1998 hit “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” will release her

first R&B album in six years The Promise on Nov. 11. Look for Cox to go on tour at the beginning of 2009.

* Can’t anybody get through a day of work without any drama?

Apparently not, as Terri Hughes, an African-American producer for the Playboy

Radio show Night Calls is taking her

suing her employer amid claims that she was asked repeatedly to “wax” the “ass”

of co-host Christy Canyon. According to TMZ.com, Hughes alleges that a hostile work environment was

created by Canyon, who was “exposing her genitals and breasts to co-workers,

making requests to guests and co-workers to touch her genitals and breasts, and

masturbating herself with her own hands as well as with various sex toys during

live broadcasts of ‘Night Calls.’”

In addition, Hughes alleges that she was told, “I don’t know

how to say this, and it might offend you, but I’m just going to say it anyway –

no Negro shows,” by a Playboy Radio executive producer after another Playboy

show host, who is also Black, asked for Hughes to work on her show. Hughes is

seeking unspecified damages.

* R&B hitmaker Avant is coming back on the scene with

his upcoming album Avant. The singer

chose to name the project after himself as a way of acknowledging his record as

a singer/songwriter, as well as the sense of creative accomplishment and

ownership that marks the project overall. Avant’s self-titled album, which

features the single, “When it Hurts,” will hit stores on Oct. 28.

Nas, Mos Def and EPMD Embark on International Rock the Bells Festival Series

Veteran rhymesayers Nas and Mos Def will be among the artists carrying the banner of Hip-Hop overseas for the Rock the Bells 2008 International Festival Series.

The SanDisk-sponsored outing, which kicks off Oct. 31 in Prague, Czech Republic, marks its first appearance outside the US with scheduled stops in Amsterdam, Stockholm and Paris before concluding Nov. 12 at Manchester’s Apollo.

The chance to take part in a major milestone in Rock the Bells and Hip-Hop history proved to be too good to pass up, according to Nas.

“I’ve been down with Rock The Bells since day one, and I’m excited to be a part of Hip-Hop history for the first Rock The Bells festivals in Europe,” said the Queensbridge rapper, who will perform classic songs in addition to new material from his latest release Untitled.

“It’s an honor and blessing to share the stage with so many artists that I truly love and appreciate on so many levels.”

Like Nas, Mos Def will take the stage to perform new tracks from his highly anticipated new album The Ecstatic.

The rappers won’t be the only entertainers on hand for the international Rock the Bells trek.

All four original members of the Los Angeles-based collective the Pharcyde will reunite on stage for the event, which also includes performances by Supernatural, former Roots member Scratch, De La Soul and EPMD, who will join the tour in Prague, Amsterdam and Birmingham.

“When I first heard the line-up for Rock The Bells, all I could think was what more can anyone ask for?,” said Dave, aka Plug Two from De La Soul. “If there ever was a hip-hop tour that made reminiscing more pleasant, Rock The Bells ’08 was it…and now to go to Europe, can’t wait!”

The inaugural European Rock the Bells festival series comes amid the recent conclusion of the outing’s 10-city US leg at The Gorge in George, WA.

The show’s line up of artists is a dream come true for event organizer Chang Weisberg, who feels the tour’s initial shows “represent the beginning of our long-term commitment to bring quality Hip-hop events on a more regular basis globally.”

“We are thrilled that Rock The Bells is launching its inaugural series of festivals in Europe. It is the first American hip-hop platform to do so,” Weisberg told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “We appreciate the enthusiastic support of all our partners especially SanDisk, Live Nation, and all the fans who love quality live music experiences.”

The following is a list of Rock the Bells 2008 International Festival Series dates.

The BBC’s digital Black Music station, 1Xtra, will have exclusive interviews and live music from the UK leg of the tour.
