AHH Stray News: Jay-Z Headlines Renovated Palladium

Rapper/mogul Jay-Z will be the opening act when the legendary Palladium performance venue reopens in Los Angeles on October 15. In April of 2007, Live Nation signed a long-term lease to operate, manage and book the venue.

The company invested “millions” into renovating the historic building that opened in September of 1940 with a performance by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, which featured a rising singer named Frank Sinatra.

Major improvements include an overhaul of the interior and exterior of the venue, a doubling of the size of the rest room facilities and other structural improvements.

“I’m honored to play such an iconic venue,” Jay-Z said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “Just as Frank ushered in a golden era, I hope this opening will mark the beginning of a resurgence in generation-defining live music.”

Opio of Souls of Mischief: Soul Supreme

There are two choices for veteran MCs; advance your style and stay relevant, or remain static in your ways and become a glorified fossil. Thankfully Opio of the mighty Souls of Mischief and their overarching Hieroglyphics crew chose the former. It’s been 15 years since Souls dropped their heralded debut, ’93 ‘Til Infinity, and since then the team has gone on to carve out a living as independent artists, cutting out any major label middle men. Opio’s first solo salvo was 2005’s Triangulation Station and though it’s been available digitally, on August 26 he drops Vultures Wisdom Vol 1 in stores on Hiero Imperium. Wholly produced by longtime underground producer The Architect, Vultures Wisdom Vol. 1 finds Opio in deep lyrical mode, oblivious to any mainstream pandering. Longtime fans should be enthused and here the veteran Oakland MC speaks on the importance of the indie hustle, the significance of “’93 ‘Til Infinity,” the need to respect Hip-Hop and how he stays on some superfly s**t.  AllHipHop.com: Vultures Wisdom, a trilogy, did you just have a gang of music in the stash or was there a vision beforehand?Opio: Kinda had a vision beforehand. We worked on one record, the first one, we did that and we had it tucked. We really had a good creative energy going, a lot of steam under our belt. We really focused on that first record and did it all as one project and made sure that it was tight in and of itself. We were still in work mode. We didn’t necessarily stop and say that’s it, no more. We just kept working. We had a concept of doing more volumes and making it out to be that way but we didn’t think it was going to happen as quickly as it did. Opio “Some Superfly S**t” VideoAllHipHop.com: Are Volumes 2 & 3 done?Opio: Yep. We sitting on Vol. 2 right now, just waiting. We really want people to get this album and digest this record, get into the material. It’s the independent game so that’s the whole reason why I’m taking the opportunity now to let people know that we have more material coming. You gotta take as much opportunity you can to get out there and promote being that we’re independent artists.  The material is there for the people. Each one is a full album and has a full personality. It’s really not necessarily the fact that it’s three records, that’s the hook. You going to get into Vol. 1 then you got another one coming that’s already ready. We just want to keep blessing people with music. AllHipHop.com: What was said in the convo with the Architect that made you two create these projects?Opio: I been a fan of his music for a long time, he been doing stuff since the early Stones Throw days. Me being with Hiero we felt that’s a powerhouse combination right there. He was definitely encouraging me to step out a little more lyrically. My first record, Triangulation Station, if you listen to it, it’s kinda has a universal appeal to it. If you’re not really into Hip-Hop you might be able to pick that album up and listen to it and still enjoy it.Vultures Wisdom is more for the avid Hip-Hop fan, the hardcore Hip-Hop fan. They don’t necessarily care about it having any universal appeal. They just want the grime and the grit. That’s really what I wanted to move towards on this record anyway. Me and [The Architect] was on the same page in terms of what we was trying to do with the record. A lot of people when they listen to it say it’s like a throwback. To me and him it’s more like a natural progression of our style.  We trying to elevate our style. Even though I’m from the second coming of the golden era, or whatever, I just try to stick to what I do, and what I brought to the game and not copycat off other people. Opio “Don Julio” VideoAllHipHop.com: So is Vultures Wisdom the record you would naturally make without having to keep everything easily digestible?Opio: Vultures Wisdom is more what I would naturally do. But when you’re doing a record you want to touch more people. You want to extend yourself and reach out to people. I’ve always done that in my career with Souls of Mischief and Hiero. We always make records [that are for] the Hip-Hop fans but they also have a universal appeal. To me it’s easier for me to get into this lane because that’s really what I am at heart: a lyricist, a storyteller, those type of things. It’s not about making a song that everybody can get into. When I was making music as a youth in high school it was just easier, just for my homies. As long as they liked it or if I thought it was tight, that was where I got my inspiration from. That type of energy translated into classic records like “93 to Infinity”. It was just for me and my homies and for the folks and it just ended up having a universal appeal naturally.AllHipHop.com: How’s it feel 15 years after “’93 ‘Til Infinity” that that record has stood the test of time and is so highly regarded?Opio: It ushered in a new era which was a good thing. During the time when it was out I feel like the average listener was a little younger than the people that [were] the established press and all that kind of stuff. We was like 17, 18 and all of our fans was around the same age. We didn’t really have no voice within the media to say, “Yo this is underground West Coast Hip-Hop, lyrical s### from the West Coast.”At that point in time everybody was like, “Yo it’s kind of like from the East Coast.” If you look at any comparison in reference to an east coast dude now, it’s always Wu-Tang: “Yeah, you guys are kinda like Wu-Tang.” But at that time Wu-Tang wasn’t really out yet. So it was Native Tongues. They was trying to compare us to Native Tongues, which we were a lot different from them at the time.If you look at that record 15 years later now, to me I’m happy to see it separated from everything; all of the boxes people were trying to put it into at first. In terms of sounding like it was from the east coast and it sounds like it’s Native Tongues or whatever. If you listen to it now you can tell that it’s west coast underground Hip-Hop. It’s a beautiful thing that it really got the opportunity to be seen and get it’s recognition for what it really was. At the time it was frustrating to me seeing cats trying to front on it a little bit or put it in these weird categories. Souls of Mischief “’93 ‘Til Infinity” VideoAllHipHop.com: Being that y’all came into the game so young, when did the switch flip and you all recognized you had to really be about your business in this game?Opio: Before ‘93 ‘Til Infinity even came out, like the actual song I think we was on the road with De La and Tribe. They asked us to come on the road with them. Those were some of our favorite groups of all time. I couldn’t believe it. I’m coming out of high school about to tour with my idols.  We were just like sponges on tour with them. They were hella cool, couldn’t be more informative and totally took us under they wing. They gave us a good blueprint to how to be in the industry period and on the road. They opened our eyes up to the possibilities. All we wanted to do at the time was get signed and get on, get a record deal, get our music out there and show it to people.  What they allowed us to see is that the record label is just a filter.  The people like you for you. They like you, they don’t like Jive Records. In our mind we really [thought] they was part of the equation; they f**k with us because we’re signed to a major label. They gave us the resources to get out there but at the end of the day the people is f**king with us and what we created. It opened our eyes to be like, Yo we get like a dollar a record at this point, in order for us to get any money we gotta go platinum. But if you selling records and you getting $7 a pop, you don’t even have to sell that many records. We just started doing the mathematics and breaking it down in our mind on that tour—it would be dope to be independent. You would never have to get caught up in all the industry bulls**t. Even though we were young, like Tajai and A-Plus was doing music for years before you heard Souls of Mischief. They was working with Sir Jinx, we f**ked with Ice Cube in the studio for years. Even though we was young we had at least, getting close to like ten years of actually recording. We was rapping since like seven…and really serious about it. We had a lot of time to work at that craft, we had a lot of experience in the game. We had a whole way of doing music for years and then when we got in the industry we were like, “This is not cool.” You got people telling you about s**t and trying to give you opinions about music. Barry Weiss doesn’t know anything about Hip-Hop. For the dude to come down and sit down with Souls of Mischief, four super creative dudes living the Hip-Hop life; there is no way he can relate to us and tell us about stuff. They would try to run that manip on you, “Yo we know about music cause we’re in the music industry and blah blah blah.” We seen it for the bulls**t that it was. AllHipHop.com: Would you compare to this age rift going on in Hip-Hop, not the best example but kind of like Soulja Boy vs. Ice-T?Opio: [laughs] Really, I hate to be talking about fools cause that ain’t me man. Ice-T is an icon, he can say whatever he want to say. Me, if I start dissing Soulja Boy I just look like I’m angry and I’m a hater. That whole thing ain’t really about the age, that’s him trying to take advantage of the situation cause the dude is just really not elevating Hip-Hop. That’s what’s really going on right now. There’s some cats that just have no respect for the music at all. They don’t care about it. The way that the music industry is right now it’s not a cash cow like it used to be. People aren’t selling ten million records and getting all this cheese off this record business right now. If you really out there doing that horrible…kicking Hip-Hop, taking it down, you really hurting it right now cause you ain’t even making money. When other cats was doing it…like for instance Master P, everybody knows he ain’t the greatest lyricist in the world. Was he really elevating Hip-Hop, probably not. But he was making all this money, so everybody’s like Yo he’s getting paid, whoopty whoop whoop. People ain’t making money like that no more so it’s really ain’t no excuses, in my opinion, for people to stick to this myth of we can do this bulls**t Hip-Hop and take it down a notch, talk about this bulls**t nonsense, as long as I’m making my paper then it’s justifiable. Now you ain’t even making paper like that, so where is the justification now? That’s really where the battleground is. What they really want to do is just make Hip-Hop over with. They’d like you to turn your backs on the people that made Hip-Hop what it is. If you get these OGs to holler at these young cats, start getting their mind right, listening to their knowledge that they have, you’d have a lot more young Black men in America thinking on a whole other level. They trying to misguide that energy, take that power away.

EXCLUSIVE: Trick Trick Speaks on Yung Berg Robbery

In light of Yung Berg’s recent public beating and robbery at the Plan B Nightclub in Detroit, rapper and club co-owner Trick Trick is maintaining that the incident had nothing to do with him.

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com, Trick Trick detailed the specifics behind the assault that left Berg bruised and stripped of his flashy Transformer chain.

“First of all I ain’t no jack n***a . I don’t need to jack nann [any] n***a to get what I gotta get,” Trick clarified to AllHipHop.com. “Karma’s a motherf**ker so I’m not taking no n***a’s s**t. I earn mine. I don’t need that piece of s**t ass aluminum foil chain the b**ch had on no way.”

Rumors have circulated that Trick Trick orchestrated the attack in retaliation for previous comments Yung Berg made, disparaging the Detroit native as an MC and Detroit’s rap scene as a whole.

While Trick admits it was members on his entourage who carried out the attack, he claims to have broken up the assault and argues Yung Berg should have cleared his appearance beforehand.

“My lil n***as got him. The label called and told me he wasn’t coming, so I wasn’t expecting him. So there was no need for me to tell the lil homies that ‘aye, the n***a’s straight,’ because he wasn’t coming,” Trick reasoned. “I saved that n***a’s life. He would probably be dead right now or in a coma if I hadn’t ran over there and pushed the lil homies back so they could quit stomping this n***a.”

The bludgeoning left Berg visibly bruised and forced the 23-year-old MC to cancel a scheduled high profile performance at Hot 102.7’s Summer Jam.

Also, a brazen picture of an unidentified man sporting Berg’s chain leaked onto the internet yesterday.

Trick Trick feels unsympathetic to Berg’s situation, feeling the Chicago native brought the beatdown on himself.

“You can’t be saying ‘f**k Trick Trick’ and you don’t like dark skin women,” Trick sneered. “I was gonna school the little n***a to the ropes of the game! If you gonna take some notes, take notes from an OG. The lil homies got that trophy [the chain], I don’t want that s**t. I don’t have any problems with the little n***a. I [just] don’t like him.”

Yung Berg is still promoting his new album Look What You Made Me, which debuted at #20 2 weeks ago on Billboard’s Top 200.

Trick Trick is finishing work on his sophomore album The Villian, which will feature appearances from Eminem, Kid Rock, Esham, and Proof.

At press time, Yung Berg and the Detroit Police Department could not be reached for comment.

ALBUM REVIEW: Solange – Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams

Solange released her debut album at the age of 16 – six months before her sister’s breakthrough Dangerously In Love – but did anyone pay attention? Apparently, only a select few obsessed Destiny’s Child fans. Five years later, with a 3-year-old child, a wedding and a divorce all in all her pocket, Solange might just be considered the wayward member of the Knowles clan and the closest person to rock star in their ranks. Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams is an artistic and highly conceptual project. Solange has openly drawn inspiration from Otis Redding, the Supremes and other classic Soul singers. Still, her approach is youthful, imaginative, and fresh. Jack Splash teams up with Solange for some of the strongest tracks on Sol-Angel – “Would’ve Been The One” and “Ode To Marvin.” The Neptunes gift her with “I Decided” and “Cosmic Journey” features Bilal. All these producers cover a different spectrum of sonic identity but the songs are cohesive – a testament to Solange’s vision. She presents herself as a product of great music and demonstrates how the classic sound of the ‘60s and ‘70s allows her to bare her soul.  Her voice is pure in tone even with its limited range. Her vibrato shows weakness on some tracks (“Valentine’s Day,” “Dancing in the Dark”) but she makes up it with presentation and lyrical content. She explores broken hearts on “T.O.N.Y.,” having sex after a joint with “ChampagneChroniKnightCap,” the certainty of love with “I Decided” and the uncertainty on “Valentine’s Day.” Sure, the Beyonce comparisons aren’t going to stop anytime soon but with Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams she definitely is carving her own niche. If the collective consensus was that Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams had much to prove after the disbanding of Destiny’s Child, try being the sibling of the music-making machine Beyonce Knowles. Simply put, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams boils down to Solange owning her spot in an industry run by her sister. And well, the proof is in the pudding.

YUNG BERG BEAT DOWN PART 3

So, I got a bit of intel on what happened to the nice

Decepticon chain that once was owned by Yung Berg. The Yung rapper was jacked

right there at Trick Trick’s club. Damn. That was a nice chain. Rumor has it,

it is now in the possession of somebody very, very close to Trick Trick. This

dude is so close to Trick that it could be his brother Diesel! Apparently

Bergie made the mistake of responding to something Royce Da 5’ 9” said about

his “dark butts” fiasco. This prompted a Detroit

“goon squad” to retaliate. He was hit hard, I am hearing. Rumor has it, he was

hit so hard that he left without his shoes and socks. Wow. That just wrong,

like Young Buck would say.

I also heard that the chain was worth about $70k.

That’s something to cry over. I wonder if Berg is going to “Tell”

or will the Tricky people be nice and just give the guy back his chain?

Here is something on the internet.

YUNG BERG BEAT DOWN –

A WITNESS RECALLS.

I don’t know that Berg would spit on anybody, but this is

why we are talking rumors. Check out the below letter written to me from

somebody that saw the whole thing.

I am a big fan of the

rumor section on AHH,  So anyway I was at

Plan B on Friday because originally Fabolous was suppose to be there but he

canceled.  So I’m standing at the door

with security and I see Yung Berg walk in he’s kind of cute but then security

said damn this dude is about to get his ass whooped, so I started thinking

maybe he talking about how Detroit n***as is but then he said that Yung Berg

spit on Trick Trick in Chicago not to long ago.

So no longer then after the security guard said that you see security in

the VIP area beating his ass, I mean they were really giving it to dude, I felt

kind of sorry for him, so after they finish beating his ass you see Yung Berg

and his little entourage running down the steps and out the door of Plan

B.  It was crazy because although dude

was up there getting his a** kicked the party never stopped, it was like the

s### wasn’t even going on.  Yung Berg is

stupid though why would you spit on a man and then come to his establishment.

Dumb move by Berg.  I guess we won’t see

him again in the D! LOL

SAD DAY IN JAMACIA

I have a sad rumor. Rumor has it Spragga Benz, the man that

once was very tight with Foxy Brown, has suffered a terrible loss. I heard that

his son was killed by the policein Jamaica. I heard that he was

basically shot and killed at the young age of 17. According to the community,

the police saw a man (or two) on bikes. The cops asked the men to stop and they

complied, putting their hands up. Somewhere, they were shot and Benz’s son was

killed. From what I heard, the police said somebody fired on them and they

returned fire.

Also, I heard the entertainer Vybes Kartel had his car

firebombed, but nobody really knows why. This is crazy. I hope nobody is hurt

out there.

Rumor has it, they are offering a date with “The Obama Girl”

at the DNC in Denver.

I wish I was there, because the Obama Girl could easily be “the illseed girl.”

RANDOM QUOTES – THE K-CI

AND JOJO EDITION

JoJo is epileptic.

OK, I get it. That still does not explain why he falls out and nobody helps

him.

“Don’t look down on a man if you not picking him up,” K-Ci

said. But nobody picked him up!!!! SMH.

K-Ci damned Bill

“I hate Bill Gates for inventing the computer.”

To defer the intense

questioning, K-Ci pulled out his Jesus card:

“Never  question God.”

Here are some other

memorable quotes:

“I don’t even know how to spell cocaine.”

“Stop the drug rumors – please. No cocaine…might be a lil’

bit of weed.”

“People when they talk about artists…they don’t understand, our

families gotta hear that. That’s not fair to my mother.” (He’s got a point

there.)

SIGNS THE WORLD IS

COMING TO AN END

Checkout this report from the Associated Press:

A San Antonio couple accused of trying to sell

the woman’s 5-year-old daughter for sex also planned to include her

10-month-old daughter in the deal and then blackmail the person interested in

the children, court testimony revealed this week.

The person with whom

Jennifer Richards, 25, and her married boyfriend, Sean Michael Block, 40, had

been in contact with turned out to be an FBI informant.

Richards is now

charged with using interstate facilities to transmit information about a minor.

Block is charged with distributing child pornography.

Richards wanted an

apartment and a used car in exchange for providing her daughter for sex,

according to the affidavit. The deal also included child care for the

10-month-old, who “eventually” would be raped herself, testified Rex

Miller, the FBI’s lead agent on the case.

The FBI agent said

Block made incriminating statements during an interview. Based on the

interview, a review of the computers the couple used and surreptitiously taped

conversations, Miller said he discovered the two were making further plans to

abduct, rape and “carve up” a teenage runaway.

S-M-H. People are just crazy!

THEY TORE THAT A** UP!

OUCH! I heard this dude was raping little kids and this was

the punishment. I don’t think he is going to be doing that again. They

literally tore that a** to shreds! Can you hear the screams in the back?

Obama Assasination Bust…

KUSA-TV ( a Denver TV station) is reporting that Denver authorities arrested a gang of white

males who could have been plotting an Obama assassination! What seemed to be a

routine traffic stop turned into a lot more when the officer turned up two

rifles, high-powered scopes, ammo and crystal meth. But wait that’s not it the

man then led authorities to a hotel where another suspect jumped out of a

fourth floor window in an attempt to escape and a third guy was busted at

another hotel. The arrests went down yesterday. Info on the suspects are still

sketchy but I will keep you updated on this story!

LIVE FROM THE DNC: Michelle Obama’s Big Moment, Celebrities in Politics, Protesters & Police

**UPDATE** Monday, August 25, 2008 11:30 AM  EST

As many of you have probably seen by now Michelle Obama just

delivered her speech as the first keynote speaker of the DNC.  After an

emotional day for the Democratic Party, featuring a tribute to former

President and present humanitarian Jimmy Carter, and a courageous

appearance from Democratic royalty Ted, Kennedy, it was left up to

Michelle Obama to deliver the goods.

Consensus and prognosticators seem to agree that she nailed it.  She

touched on all the issues that we prescribed above; drawing on those

feeligns of family, and commonality and patriotism, but without making

Barack seem like some schmuck husband.

She drew on her personal history and stories of her childhood and a

father with multiple schlerosis not depending on help but forging ahead

with rugged self determination.  She spoke on the strength of her

mother in holding the family down, and the presence of her older

brother as a positive male role model in her life, two things which

normalized her experience not as solely Black, but American and

relatable to all. In that frame we have a mission accomplished.

She gave obligatory kudos to Senator Clinton and used her own

identity as both Black and female, referencing both the 88th

anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, and the 45th anniversary of the March

on Washington to evoke visions of an America where anything is

possible.  This both brought people in emotionally and placated the

still disgruntled Clinton supporters.  Mission accomplished.

The cherry on top came with the afterparty.  The Obama children in

particular the precocious Sasha really brought home the idea of family

and the genuine love and affection that is readily apparentis not

something that could be faked.  This love is self evident and i think

it went a long way towards humanizing Barack Obama without limiting him

as a man, or reducing his stature as a potential head of state.

In a nutshell, Barack trusted his most prized treasure and secret

weapon with the task of softening up America to his image. He chose his

partner with his political destiny.  She, with three generations of her

family in tow delivered in spades.  Full of emotion and absent of

rhetoric she made the connection.  The ball is in Barack’s court now.*********************************************************************UPDATE**

Much has been made about celebrities injecting their opinions and

star power into the general  political conversation.  Some sectors

wonder aloud whether or not they should be there and what exactly

qualify celebrities to even speak on world affairs with little more

than their own fame to qualify them.  Alfre Woodard would tend to

disagree:

*********************************************************************UPDATE**

High gas prices and increasing travel costs have combined with other

issues to limit the number of protesters.  While expecting thousands of

protesters, the Denver Police Department has numbered the protesters to

around 1000.

The loud minority spoke on many issues including the war in Iraq,

the crumbling economy, and human rights issues.  They are comprised of

college students, high school activists, and veterans among others.

Perhaps the tremendous police presence has discouraged protesters from

getting rowdy.

According to the Mayor of Denver, John Hickenlooper, the city spent

roughly $50,000,000 in logistical and security measures to prepare for

its first political convention in 100 years. At the time of this report

only 4 protesters have been arrested for minor disturbing the peace

transgressions.

The theme of the protestors in general has been “Recreate ’68” a

reference to the Democratic Convention of 40 years ago.  The police

would like to prevent incidents such as the political upheavel, riots,

and assassination or anything even close to that which occured that

same year.  They have adopted a zero tolerance policy and the Secret

Service, as well as many intelligence entities such as NORAD, will be

monitoring live video feeds.

As of yet there hasn’t been any violence from either side.

AllHipHop will be bringing you color live from the Democratic National Convention here in Denver, Colorado.  Throughout the week we will update you on happenings, events, and the general tone of the convention.  As we journey through the next stage of developments towards this historic Election 2008, hopefully we can inform you and give you a different perspective and shed some light on things you didn’t know.

As the convention begins tonight, all eyes will be on Michelle Obama who is the headline speaker.  Her place in these events is of the utmost importance, as she is the first representative of Team Obama and will set the tone as how both she and her husband are viewed by America.

Mrs. Obama is no stranger to the campaign trail and has been an active participant thus far, providing a far different approach than Barack’s stadium filling speeches.  Michelle conversely has followed his performances with a far more intimate delivery, appearing in front of prospective voters in small towns and on smaller settings.  These appearances have given Michelle the nickname “The Closer,” as more often than not, those who hear her message generally change from the straddler to the converted.

Tonight’s program however, will have a decidedly different  tone. Her job will be to reintroduce herself as a wife and a mother; two roles that resonate with most Americans, and stands to soften the undercurrent of sentiment that she is aggressive and stand-offish.

Mrs. Obama will stand in front of 50,000 people tonight to combat the idea that Barack is high-brow, erudite, and out of touch with Middle America, despite both of their back stories speaking to the contrary. Michelle herself was raised in a one bedroom apartment above her aunts home with both her parents and her brother. This is the first and best chance to share her experiences and create that connection.

Family and the image of the common man will be prevalent in her speech.  As a wife of 15 years and a mother of two children, Michelle has often been cast in black media as a superwoman.  Tonight, projecting the image of everywoman will be key in helping her husband overcome the feeling that he can’t relate to the lives of the average American.  Despite Michelle’s appearance on The View, and on the covers on the covers of many magazines, the Obamas haven’t quite driven home that connection.  Perhaps tonight’s speech and the selection of Delaware Senator Joe Biden as a running mate will put the proverbial cherry on top.

Knockout Nation: De La Hoya Ups Pacquiao Offer, Judah Wants Mayweather, US Olympic Team Bombs, “The Celtic Warrior” Steve Collins

De La Hoya Increases Pacquiao Offer

Oscar De La Hoya is not a man used to being told no. For over ten years, the Golden Boy has been able to dictate purse splits over all his opponents due to his immense mainstream marketability.

But in 2008, things have changed.

Just a week after his 70-30 split was rejected by Filipino star Manny Pacquiao, De La Hoya is reportedly upping the bid in hopes of securing the blockbuster super-fight.

As reported here last week, De La Hoya refused to negotiate to 60-40 from a flat 70-30 split for the proposed December bout. While this tactic worked last year on Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao promptly turned down the offer and instructed his promoter Bob Arum to begin negotiations for a November bout with Humberto Soto.

Shocked, Oscar’s team immediately derided Pacquiao as making an uninformed decision and losing out on millions of dollars. To counter, De La Hoya publicly stated he would begin negotiations with junior middleweight titlist Sergio Mora, pending he defeats Vernon Forrest again next month.

However with some time to sit on that plan De La Hoya likely realized a Sergio Mora fight is not exactly a blockbuster swan song to end a career.

A few days ago, news broke courtesy of Filipino writer Dennis Principe that the offer has been raised to 67-33 in favor of De La Hoya.

While details have not been confirmed, rumors are circulating that Pacquiao would get a 67-33 split for a certain number of PPV buys before changing over to 70-30.

While on paper a 3% increase may seem insignificant, it means a difference of millions of dollars and can result in Pacquaio actually making more than the $25 million Mayweather grossed for outboxing the Golden Boy last year.

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach has offered to forego his training fee if Pacquiao loses. Golden CEO Richard Shaefer and Top Rank head Bob Arum have told media they would prefer to have the deal done in time to make an announcement this week.Pacquaio’s gamble appears to have paid off, much to the surprise of many.

Will he be content with 67-33, or will Pacquaio push his luck and remain firm on his original 60-40 split?

Judah Looks to Hire Floyd Mayweather, Sr as New Trainer

Former undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah thinks his figured out the solution to his post-title woes. The problem may be his trainer, and Judah is seeking to rectify that by replacing his father Yoel Judah with Floyd Mayweather, Sr.

Publicly, Yoel Judah is claiming the switch is due to him focusing on getting Zab’s promotional company off the ground. According to him, despite Zab’s abysmal record since losing the title and his recent stoppage to Joshua Clottey, the Brooklynite remains a hot commodity.

“Everyone wants to fight Zab. We know that we’re very marketable, and we know that when Zab comes he’s going to fight, win, lose, or draw,” Yoel reasoned to boxingscene.com. “Zab is like an Arturo Gatti at this point. Sometimes, a lot of good can come from a loss.”

The Gatti comparison is correct in more ways than Yoel envisions.

Since being upset for the title by journeyman Carlos Baldomir in 2006, Zab has gone 2-3 with 1 no contest in his last six fights. The two wins were lackluster decisions over unheralded Ryan Davis and Edwin Vazquez.

At this stage, Zab is becoming a stepping stone for fighters to make their names or stay-busy. He’s offensive enough to give a few good rounds, but then takes a sustained beating over the second half of the fight.

According to Yoel, offers have come in for a possible rematch with Miguel Cotto or Joshua Clottey. Also, Yoel mentioned his son facing Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, and Andre Berto.

Mayweather, Sr. or not, I give Zab only a chance early against Berto. A promoter who puts Judah anywhere near Margarito is sadistic and must damn near hate Zab.

If anything, Zab needs to strongly consider dropping back down to 140 pounds, where he is not undersized and can make exciting matchups with new titlist Timothy Bradley, Kendall Holt, Paulie Malignaggi, rematch Junior Witter, or take on champ Ricky Hatton.

US Olympic Boxing Team Records All Time Poorest Showing

In past decades the boxing world would look to American Olympic medal showings to gauge the sport’s next top fighters.

The ’60s saw gold medal wins from Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The ’70s and ’80s featured the same from greats like Michael Spinks and Ray Leonard. Even recently, we’ve seen super-middleweight Andre Ward take home the gold in the 2004 games.

However in 2008, the US Boxing team made its worst showing ever, taking home one bronze medal in the heavyweight division.

China took home two gold medals in light-flyweight and light-heavyweight, while boxing powerhouse Cuba secured no gold but eight medals overall. America’s lone medal was courtesy of Deontay Wilder at heavyweight, who ironically was the most inexperienced pugilist on the team.

The clear advantage other countries have gained over the US is that their teams are dedicated exclusively to amateur boxing.

With the amateurs seen merely as a stepping stone in the United States, many young fighters opt early on to juggle many responsibilities from their managers and promoters while eyeing professional stardom.

Due to this we’re seeing more glossy records, but fighters with poor boxing acumen, who get brutally exposed the first time they step up in competition.

While this situation won’t change overnight, let’s hope that amateur boxing starts to take steps at improving their system for 2012’s games.

Calderon Headlines Low-key August 30 PPV

Undefeated top ten pound for pound fighter Ivan Calderon (31-0, 6 KOs) will defend his WBO title in a rematch with hard puncher Hugo Cazares (26-4, 19 KOs).

In their 2007 bout, Calderon was dropped in the eighth and struggled to fight off Cazares’ pressure. Despite this, the champ was able to escape with a split decision win over his larger foe.

While this is not a mandatory PPV to get, it’s a chance to see one of the lesser known pound for pound elites in a very stiff test. If you have some cash to spare, definitely check it out.Highlights from the Calderon-Cazares I

Lamon Brewster on the Comeback Trail

Also on August 30, former heavyweight titlist Lamon Brewster (33-4, 29 KOs) makes his return to the ring in an untelevised bout against Danny Batchelder (25-5-1, 12 KOs).

Already looking ahead, Brewster wants revenge after being stopped in a lopsided rematch against reigning champ Wladimir Klitschko last year.

“I’m going to brush this rust off then go and knock Klitschko out,” he vowed.

Brewster was a welcomed addition to the heavyweight division over the last few years. But after all the grueling rights he’s had since 2004, we’ll see what the former titlist has left in the tank.

Throwback Fighter of the Week: “The Celtic Warrior” Steve Collins

Iron-chinned Steve Collins began his career as a middleweight in 1986.

Despite besting b-level competition it appeared early that Collins may never win the big one as he dropped decisions in his first three title attempts to Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson, and Sumbu Kalabay.

That stigma changed in 1995 with a pair of memorable battles with WBO super-middleweight champ Chris Eubank.

Holding obvious disdain for each other, Collins dragged superior boxer Eubank into a bar-room brawl and outlasted him as both men tasted the canvas.

In a rematch six months later, Collins again roughed up Eubank, and his constant pressure was enough to eek out a close split decision.

From there Collins went on to eat the best power shots from dangerous Nigel Benn to grind out two entertaining stoppage wins in 1996.

Collins initially signed on to face a then unknown Joe Calzaghe, but withdrew on an injury and was stripped of his WBO title. Failing to secure a bout with Roy Jones and unwilling to reschedule with Calzaghe (“Joe is a good up-and-coming kid, but he wouldn’t fill a parish church.”), Collins retired in 1997.

However, Collins reconsidered in 1999 after Jones offered him millions and began preparations for a mandatory bout against Calzaghe before taking on Jones.

Unfortunately, Collins collapsed in training and was informed by doctors that he could potentially die from any further head trauma. Wisely, Collins retired again for good in 1999.

Never to be confused with a technically skilled fighter, Collins made his reputation as a punishing, wild swinging  brawler who was near impossible to hurt even with flush power punches. His will was strong enough to outlast his rivals Eubank and Benn, and many consider him the top fighter of Europe’s “golden age” of super-middleweight boxing.

Steve Collins’ final record is 36-3, 21 KOs.

Rev. Run & Justine Simmons’ Latest Book Makes NY Times Best Seller List

Rev. Run and Justine Simmons have a new victory to celebrate as parents with the success of their new book Take Back Your Family.

The book, which offers parental guidance based on the same principals they apply to their own family, entered the New York Times’ list of best selling Hardcover Advice books this week in the number 15 position.

The self-help tome is the first co-written by the Simmons’, who have each penned best sellers independently.

The reality TV patriarch and Hip-Hop legend explains that Take Back Your Family is a continuation of the message he attempts to spread through his popular MTV series, Run’s House.

“My whole show is a ministry,” Rev. Run, born Joseph Simmons, told AllHipHop.com. “I don’t have a church that I’m the pastor of. So in my mind, I’m a very untraditional reverend. And my pulpit just happens to be MTV, which is a very different type of congregation.”

Released earlier this month, Take Back Your Family shares the Simmons’ very hands-on approach to parenting, using the proven methods which keep their children balanced in an age of shallow materialism and fragmented families.

Included are lessons like “Run your family as the ‘COEs: Chief Officers of Everything; Lead by example, not by preaching;'” and what Run considers the most important lesson of all: “When they get older it’s not time to back out, it’s time to push further in their life,” said Run, whose oldest child, Vanessa, recently celebrated her 25th birthday.

“That’s the time when they need mentoring the most, and they need love the most when they get older, Run told AllHipHop.com. “Some parents might think it’s time to cut the strings, I think it’s time to get closer. These are when they’re making the biggest decisions of their life.”

The Simmons family has spent the last few weeks on tour, promoting the new book, attempting to get closer to the 4.1 million viewers Run’s House garners every week.

According to Run, the responses they have gotten have been overwhelmingly positive.

However, he knows that in this age of media scrutiny, the public light doesn’t always shine positively, as was recently the case with Internet coverage of photos taken of Angela over the weekend.

“People are showing me blog things, and I’m like what do you want me to look at,” Run said of the salacious stories that have been printed. “There’s nothing to see. What is she not supposed to talk to guys? There’s nothing I can do but let guys be guys, let girls be girls; let JoJo put his album out, and [let them] live their life. That’s all I can do is raise them the best that I can, and watch them operate in this world without cramping their style…I’ve been blessed with kids that are smart, and they’re not follower, they’re leaders. They’re not really caught up in the whole game like that. They move around. They’re basically good kids. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but I did the best I could and I do the best I can.”

Take Back Your Family is available for purchase at finer book stores nationwide.
