Sampling In Hip Hop: Do Artists Need A Dose of Originality?

Hip hop is the rose that grew from concrete. The genius manifested from a poor and disenfranchised people. Hip Hop is an art form notorious for its capacity to create something out of nothing. This distinct trait is evident in everything from the beautiful graffiti plastered on the most dank, gritty canvases, to the creation of the music itself. Sampling has been a significant aspect of hip hop extending from its early beginnings in the Bronx. Is it unoriginal or a testament to the genres creativity and ingenuity? The legitimacy of Hip Hop as “real” music has often been challenged by outsiders on the basis of the supposed lack of originality in sampling. My sentiment is that this couldn’t be further from the truth, and that when done properly sampling allows the sound of hip hop to transcend boundaries that other genres may not be able to.

“The dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum.” I’d like to believe that I’m of rather exceptional intelligence, but I at an early age discovered my preference for the beat of the drum. Once I discovered the role of the producer, I instantly became a beat head. Pete Rock, J. Dilla, Just Blaze, Kanye West, this is just a handful of world renown producers notorious for their skillful sampling. Just Blaze’s classic rock sampled organs for Jay- Z’s “Public Service Announcement” still give me a jolt of energy every time they ring out. Pete Rock’s beautiful jazzy sample for the classic anthem “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” still gives me chills to this day. A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory gave me my intro to Jazz as a collective. These are just a few examples of some of the sample based masterpieces that have guided me on my musical journey.

Sampling and Hip Hop are inseparable; it’s entrenched into its DNA. A filter here, a 4-bar sample chop here, a sampled trumpet stab there and you could be on your way to a classic. When producing there’s so many tricks to the trade to work outside of the box and craft that sound you really want. This allows another element of creativity that extends beyond genre. There’s a plethora of great songs that have used odd combination of samples simultaneously from genres of music ranging from R &B , to disco, heavy metal, and classical. Each of these eclectic combos can be put together beautifully and still remain within the genre that is hip hop. Fans may stumble upon new music through searching for the original track that may have been sampled in a song. Being a hip hop aficionado and digging in the crates for those awe inspiring classics has caused me to become fans of many artists that I wouldn’t have likely been aware of otherwise, such as jazz craftsmen Ahmad Jamal.

On the opposing end of the spectrum is the need and love for money. This brings to light the classic conflict of artistry vs business, and just how to attain the perfect balance to walk this thin line. Should creativeness be constrained by the power of the almighty dollar or should the legalities be sacrificed to promote creativity and preserve the essence of the genre? This is a concept that is very fleeting. It’s only fair that the originating artist get properly compensated for their work, but some of the biggest disappointments in Hip Hop are the gems that may have been lost artistically, because of technicalities in getting samples cleared for commercial release.

So how do the fans feel? Is sampling essential to hip hop or an overused crutch? Please feel free to comment below.

Drake was supposed to record a remix of his song “Wu-Tang Forever,” but the song never manifested itself.

The Young Money rapper/singer explained to Vulture why the video/remix won’t be seeing the light of day.

“Oh, man, that’s kind of behind us. That was two projects ago. There was a remix that 40 [Noah Shebib] was working on. He has a really personal relationship with a lot of those guys from Wu-Tang, and me and Rocky were working on a video at one point in Harlem, and it was cool, but with schedules and all that, different things came into play and we never really got to finish, which is not something I recommend. You should always try and finish your music video.”

Attorneys Defending Police Officers Behind Freddie Gray Case Wants Charges Dropped, Prosecutor Gone

It’s been a week since prosecutor Marylin Mosby charged the six police officers behind Freddie Gray’s case with manslaughter, second-degree murder, and assault. But now, not only do the officers’ attorneys want the charges dropped, but they also want Mosby dismissed from the case entirely if their request isn’t granted. According to the New York Times, the lawyers believe that Mosby’s office is motivated by “conflict of interest”. The lawyers tell The Times:

“Rarely in the history of any criminal case has a prosecutor so directly maintained so many conflicts of interest,” the defense lawyers stated in the motion.

The motion adds: “At best, the charges levied against these officers are extraordinary prosecutorial overreaching. At worst, they are something far more nefarious.”

The lawyers also have a 109-page document to help defend their requests for the six police officers. The death of Freddie Gray has caused a series of riots in the city of Baltimore in the last couple of weeks.

Dear America: A B-More Teacher And His Student Write A Nation

Dear America,

Now that we have your attention, will you help us?  In the wake of Freddie Gray’s untimely demise while in the custody of Baltimore City Police, we’ve seen riots, protests, marches, burnings and assaults on police officers as well as civilians.  Demonstrations, some peaceful and some, not so peaceful, were all done with the intent of bringing attention to a group of people whom ultimately feel that you’ve forsaken and forgotten them.  In the past couple of weeks, you have watched us act out, without thoroughly understanding that what you were witnessing was more an act of us crying out.  Help!  Help!  That’s what you should’ve heard, if you were truly listening.

A week ago, news media converged on our town like they were covering an annual celebratory sporting event.  Media representatives from all around the world wanted to cover the story of events that were initiated and taking place in west Baltimore.  I was even approached by a journalist, while walking my students to the bus stop at Mondawmin Mall two days after the riots on Monday April 27.  I refused to speak because it angered me that it took our children cries and misguided pinned up emotions to get anyone from outside of our community to express any sort of “interest” in them.  My dear America, have you not heard the cries of your children, our children prior to these chain of events?  And after hearing these horrendous cries and pleas for help from our youth, do you not think it requires a sincere response from you?

In my classroom, I have a white board that I’ve dedicated to the remembrance of Freddie Gray.  In the center of the board, beneath his graffitied name, I wrote, “please, feel free to write your thoughts.”  To which one of my student’s first responses was, “I’m sorry you had to see that!”  A child apologized to you for the acts of her peers.  But where’s the apology to them, from you, I ask.  You can’t be so blatantly disconnected or disinterested that you don’t feel some sense of accountability and responsibility, could you?

It’s so much more that could be done for the betterment of our youth, if people really cared.  Immediately after the outcry, several celebrities made themselves available to speak to our young people in the city.  They wanted to help curtail violence and give them redirection.  I applaud them all for doing that, but I can only imagine if they believe that their celebrity could be of service and impactful to our children after the outcry, what could their celebrity and interest in our children have done before they cried out?  People think it’s solely money that we need to help ignite the transformation in the lives of our youth.  However, in my humble opinion, it’s not all about money.  Instead, I’ve concluded that the most valuable investment a person could make in our children is their time, and not necessarily their dollar.  So I employ you America, if I could, to invest back into your children, our children.  They need you.

I teach at Connexions:  A Community Based Arts Charter School, located at 2801 N. Dukeland Street Baltimore, MD   21216.  I’m inviting you and encouraging you to help.  If not our school, another school.  If not our city, another city.  Let’s not wait for another tragedy to happen before you decide to pay some attention to the downtrodden.  The cry you should’ve heard from last week is “We Need Your Help.”  How do you respond to that America?  Honestly.

I’ll like to close this editorial with the help of one of my 8th grade students from Connexions.  This young man is a budding scholar with great potential and an extremely bright future ahead of him.  One of the many gems I have the pleasure to teach on a daily basis.  His name is Manavin Johnson.  And this is what he’d like to say:

Somebody pray for Baltimore.
The cops killing us while we’re robbing convenience stores.
We need unification and less cops to be racists.
The future generation is hidden in our babies.
So don’t let them grow up in this twisted society.
If we divide and reside we’ll stay in poverty.
So put your hands together and bow your head,
Let’s wish away darkness and shine light instead.
It’s crazy the way they did Freddie Gray.
He’s six feet in the ground, he’ll see no other day.
Somebody pray for Baltimore.

[KNOCKOUT NATION] James Kirkland Talks Canelo and Recapturing the Killer Instinct

For more on boxing and MMA, go to KnockoutNation.com.

Outside of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, Saturday’s HBO bout pitting James Kirkland against Canelo Alvarez has been one of boxing’s most delayed contests. First negotiated for the fall of 20212, Kirkland walked away citing purse split concerns. The ensuing years saw vastly different fortunes for both men. Canelo’s star power continued to rise via his 2013 challenge to Mayweather, and wins over avoided technicians Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara. Kirkland has only fought once since, waging war in a 2013 Fight of the Year candidate and KO over Glen Tapia.

With Kirkland’s layoff, Canelo has the momentum advantage. But the man who calls himself “The Mandingo Warrior” does not break nor shy away from a challenge.

Knockout Nation: When this fight was announced, there was concern that you were starting camp too heavy due to the year-plus layoff. Did you have to spend most of this camp losing the weight?

Kirkland: First let me give thanks to God for another day. I can say the starting weight was a little high. But two weeks ago I was at 159 pounds. Just imagine my workrate and where I’m at now. I’ll put it to you like this – weight is not an issue. Overall I’m happy about how this camp has been going.

There’s a lot of stuff I’m doing differently like core workouts and having a strength and conditioning coach. It’s taking my body to whole ‘nother level. The stamina and skill is there.

Knockout Nation: You started off by thanking God, which is different from the James Kirkland I remember from a few years ago. With everything that’s changed in your life and getting older, how can you still have the ruthless, primal killer instinct that fans fell in love with?

Kirkland: Man, a lot of things have changed in my life, but I’m still James Kirkland. That showed in the Glen Tapia fight. Far as still wanting to take control of my opponents, everything is still there. I want to make a major name in boxing beyond what I’ve already accomplished. I still want to take advantage of and hurt my opponents.

Knockout Nation; That brings us to Canelo Saturday night. Most observers are believe he’s getting you at the “right time” because of your layoff and switch in trainers…

Kirkland: The man can do it all, well almost do it all. There’s certain things I see that will play out for me in the fight.

I’m a fighter, so even with the layoff I’ve always been working in the gym. I’ve been doing that even when people were like “Damn James, you’re looking like a butterball.” I learned from certain people how to make that weight come off.

I’ve wanted this fight as much as anyone. When they brought it to me I was like “What would make Canelo jump in the lion’s den and fight me?” I hope it’s not because of my layoff. I’m comfortable and ready. May 9 will be a shocker.

Knockout Nation: The prevailing knock on Canelo has always been his stamina in late rounds. Do you view that as his main weakness?

Kirkland: He better be in great condition and motivated to win because from round one to whenever, we’re going to be grinding. He’s never fought someone of my stature that comes non-stop and it’s hard to prepare your body and find sparring partners like me.

Knockout Nation: You used to really go hard at your sparring partners. A lot of times it was more intense and brutal than your fights. Did you keep it like that this time around?

Kirkland: If you fight before the fight, you don’t have to get prepared for the fight. I’m not sure if that makes any sense, but you don’t have to get prepared to take punches or give it your all because that’s what you’ve been doing. If you’ve been pitty-patting all camp, how can I adjust to going hard on fight night? Mentally you’ve been pitty-patting all camp.

The body is a muscle. Yes, I still did it the old way. I went hard and had to get more and more sparring partners to make it happen.

Knockout Nation: In your fights there always seems to be a point where your opponent starts to physically and mentally break…

Kirkland: Aw man, that’s just a skill within myself. I can’t really elaborate on it because it’ll open the door for a lot of different fighters I may face. At the end of the day, it comes with hard work. You start to visualize and see certain things happening to your opponent.

Knockout Nation: Because of how devastating and exciting you’ve looked under her, you’ll probably always get questions about your former trainer Ann Wolfe. Did you guys have contact once this fight was announced?

Kirkland: My relationship with Ann isn’t one with major problems or issues. It’s like seeing an old friend. When I see her I speak, and when she sees me she speaks. At the beginning of my camp I bumped into her and she said how good my body looked. I told her the same since she’s been working. We spoke and kept it moving. I thanked her for working with me and continuing to work with me through the issues we had.

Knockout Nation: A KO seems to be the only logical conclusion to this fight…

Kirkland: I know it’s not going the distance. I’m not leaving anything in the hands the judges.

Canelo vs. Kirkland airs Saturday (May 9) on HBO at 9 p.m. ET

Bow Wow Leaves Cash Money

Shad Moss aka Bow Wow is no longer in the Cash Money roster.

The rapper announced his departure from the iconic record label through Facebook.

“This is a peaceful situation. This is me waking up and looking myself in the mirror, analyzing myself and asking myself, ‘What do want out of your career? What do you wanna do?’ I have so much music that needs to be heard. That wants to be heard by my fans. And I feel like it’s unfair. I’ve been quiet now for four years. I didn’t wanna say nothing because I wanted to make sure the time was right. And I wanted to make sure that I said what I wanted to say, it was said correctly. With that being said I feel like I had to part ways.”

He signed to CMR in 2009, but never released any music.

“I wanna dictate when my music come out. I’m tired of going to the studio to make records and then I listen to them. ‘Cuz then they get old. Then when y’all ask for new music I don’t wanna hear it ‘cuz I’ve been listening to it for two or three months. I just can’t be held up up by nobody. It’s as simple as that. I got a daughter. I gotta family I gott provide for. Why not go back to the creators and masters who branded me? That’s Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri. This is gonna make my new situation even more monumental. I wanted to be my own man. I wanted to be a boss and call my own shots.”

Offset Of Migo Cusses Out Judge After Being Denied Bond

Screen Shot 2015-05-08 at 11.29.32 PMOffset of the Atlanta rap crew Migos cursed out the judge after he was denied bond on Friday.

The rapper, also a convicted felon, was arrested with his crew on drug and gun charges after a concert at Georgia Southern University on April 18.
Offset, nee Kiari Kendrell Cephus, was visibly irate when Judge John R. Turner of Bulloch County Superior Court denied him bond because of his past criminal activity.

Offset,” one of the members of the Migos rap group arrested on guns and drug charges after a concert in Statesboro, shouted profanities Friday as he was led out of the courtroom after being denied bond. The judge considered him a flight risk.

The whole crew was charged with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone (a felony offense), marijuana possession, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Offset also got a new case in jail as he was allegedly the aggressor in a fight. He was subsequently charged with battery and causing a riot in a penal institution.

Is Love & Hip-Hop Languishing In Ratings?

Some people have been calling for the death of Love & Hip-Hop for a minute. Late last month, LAHH ATL came back and garnered a good ratings even though they were under the last season premiere at 3.5 million. The start of the last season reportedly opened at 3.8 millions. The subsequent two episodes went from 3.5 million to 2.9 million to 2.6 million. Last year’s finale broke records as Zino and Stevie & Joseline tried to kill each others. You know now, Zino was eliminated from the show and he blamed Stevie and Mona for the ousting. Only time will tell, but perhaps they bring the Zino dude back to bolster ratings. You know?

Mayweather Slams Pacquaio’s Excuses, Says He Lost Respect For Him

Floyd Mayweather sat down with Showtime’s Jim Gray this past Tuesday evening, just days after he dominated Manny Pacquiao en route to a 12-round unanimous decision last Saturday in Las Vegas. In the interview, Mayweather addressed claims that Pacquiao was injured, discussed the possibility of a rematch, and gave his thoughts on fighting beyond his next scheduled event in September

“Excuses, excuses, excuses. … I’m not going to buy into the bull— … and I don’t want the public to buy into the bull—-. He lost. He knows he lost. I lost a lot of respect for him after all of this.
