The Weeknd Follows In French Montana’s Footsteps and Donates Big Loot to Uganda

(AllHipHop News) The Weeknd has followed in his friend French Montana’s footsteps and donated $100,000 to a community health center in Uganda.

The “Pop That” hitmaker traveled to Uganda in March to film his new music video Unforgettable, and while he was there, he paid a visit to the Suubi Health Center in Budondo and donated $100,000, which will help fund medical supplies and support local blood banks.

His pal The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, has now been inspired to do the same and has donated the same amount to the center, which serves as a maternity and children’s medical facility.

According to E! News, his donation will help staff at non-profit organization Mama Hope complete construction of the first floor of the maternity clinic and enable them to look after 260,000 people, an increase on its previous capacity of 56,000 people.

French spoke about his visit to Billboard.com after his return, saying, “That touched my heart when I went out there… I felt like taking my clothes off while I was there and giving it to them there… I feel like sometimes God puts you in a platform where you’re supposed to help other people.”

His trip inspired him to launch the Unforgettable Dance Challenge, a social media craze in which fans show off their moves to the track to raise awareness and additional donations for Mama Hope. Drake, Swizz Beatz, and DJ Khaled have all thrown their support behind the online campaign.

He has signed on for the singing competition, alongside previously announced “architects,” Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter and Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton, who will select the singers who will make up a new group on Boy Band, according to Variety.

“I’m excited to be a part of this show and come on as an architect to help guide the next generation of undiscovered talent,” Timbaland says in a statement. “I want to continue giving back to music as I have been. I’m ready to find the next boy band that could change our business.”

Timbaland, who has worked extensively with Missy Elliott and former boy band star Justin Timberlake, among others, produced Jodeci in the 1990s.

Joseline took to her Instagram Live to let people know that she would be telling it all about her boss!

“I’ma come back in about five minutes I need y’all to have your phones ready to record what I’m about to tell you about this b-tch Mona and how she MF treating her cast members, and all the sh-t she done to us throughout the MF years. Ima let everybody know. Hashtag Oprah, and I want to go sit down with Oprah. Can y’all hashtag that,” said Joseline.

The “Hidden Figures” actress will star alongside Juno Temple in an episode of the new sci-fi series, based on author Philip K. Dick’s short stories.

Monae and Temple will appear in an episode titled “Autofac,” which is set in a time after society collapses and humans must consume products to stay happy.

The series will feature 10 stand-alone episodes, with other previously-announced cast members including Timothy Spall, Anna Paquin, Terence Howard, Steve Buscemi, and Bryan Cranston, who also serves as an executive producer on the show.

Vince Staples Describes His ‘Big Fish Theory’ Album As Afrofuturism

(AllHipHop News) California rhymer Vince Staples is ready to return with his next musical body of work on June 23.

In an interview with LA Weekly, Staples talked about the artistic direction of his upcoming release titled Big Fish Theory.

“All I can tell you is that it’s current. It’s tomorrow. It’s next Thursday,” said the 23-year-old artist. “We making future music. It’s Afrofuturism. This is my Afrofuturism. There’s no other kind.”

The term “Afrofuturism” refers to an aesthetic which combines science fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentrism.

Works by notable music acts like George Clinton, Jimi Hendrix, Sun-Ra, Missy Elliott, OutKast, Janelle Monáe, Solange, and FKA Twigs have been connected to the philosophy.

Filmmakers Sama’an Ashrawi and Steven Jackson recently launched an animated docu-series highlighting performers that embrace Afrofuturism.

“We noticed a growing online trend of people asking for more Afrofuturism-related content and decided to make these brief explainer videos about important figures related to the lens of Afrofuturism – but we didn’t want them to be like a boring lecture, we wanted them to be fun. And I think they turned out very fun,” Ashrawi told AllHipHop.com in April.

Vince Staples’ journey into the world of Afrofuturistic ideas follows his critically acclaimed Summertime ’06 album which has been described as a coming-of-age story set in LA.

It appears Big Fish Theory will be a departure – both conceptually and stylistically – from the No I.D. protégé’s 2015 debut LP.

“If a photographer took the same picture over and over again, you’d call them crazy, right? If an architect built the same house, if a designer made the same clothes, if a painter made the same painting  – we’d all discredit them,” explained Staples on the need to constantly switch things up. “Then why do we expect musicians, and rappers specifically, to do the same thing over and over and over?”

Eminem Helps Get The Word “Stan” Added To The Oxford Dictionary

(AllHipHop News) The word “stan” has been part of the Hip Hop lexicon for years.

Thanks to Eminem’s 2000 song “Stan,” rappers and rap fans used the term to describe an overly infatuated fan.

Eventually, the word spread to the mainstream as a way for people to describe himself or herself as a devoted follower of a public figure.

The Oxford Dictionaries Online has even accepted the impact of Eminem’s creation by adding “stan” to its database.

Oxford defines the noun as “an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity” and the verb as to “be an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity.”

The ODO credits Slim Shady with the entry: “Early 21st century: probably with allusion to the 2000 song “Stan” by the American rapper Eminem, about an obsessed fan.”

“Stan” appeared on the Detroit-bred rapper’s Diamond-certified The Marshall Mathers LP.

The single featured British singer-songwriter Dido, and it became an international hit.

Em’s performance of “Stan” with Elton John at the 2001 Grammys is often cited as one of the best presentations in the award show’s history.

Lil Twist Reportedly Ordered To Pay $1.5 Million To Assault Victim Chris Massey

(AllHipHop News) Christopher “Lil Twist” Moore was recently released early from jail, but the Young Money representative is still taking a financial hit for an alleged 2014 assault.

According to The Daily Mail, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge ordered Twist to pay $1.5 million to former Zoey 101 star Chris Massey.

The legal situation stems from accusations Twist and accomplices broke into the Los Angeles apartment of Chris’ brother, Kyle Massey, before attacking the actor with brass knuckles and a screwdriver.

Apparently, Massey asked Twist to leave a party being held at the residence, but “The Leak” rapper later returned and the violence ensued.

Twist eventually pled no contest to charges of criminal threats, burglary, grand theft, battery, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

He was sentenced to one year in prison but only served seven and a half weeks.

The $1.5 million court ruling was granted after a brief non-jury trial which Twist did not attend.

Drake Wins Noteworthy Lawsuit Over Sample On “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2”

(AllHipHop News) Back in 2014, Drake was hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over his use of a sample on “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2.”

The Estate of James Oscar Smith claimed the Nothing Was The Same track illegally used copyrighted material from the jazz musician.

However, U.S. District Court Judge William H. Pauley III ruled Drake’s sampling of “Jimmy Smith Rap” falls under the “fair use” doctrine.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the ruling could establish a new precedent for musicians since “fair use” arguments are not typically used in cases involving the creation of songs.

Judge Pauley’s decision claimed the purpose of Drake’s use of Smith’s work is “sharply different” from the original and the Cash Money star added “something new.”

He also rejected the Smith Estate’s argument the sample on “Pound Cake” was too long by ruling the length was “reasonable.”

Drake opened “Pound Cake” with an edited sound bite of Smith saying:

Good God Almighty, like back in the old days… You know, years ago they had the A&R men to tell you what to play, how to play it and you know whether it’s disco and rock but we just went in the studio and we did it. We had the champagne in the studio, of course – compliments of the company – and we just laid back and did it. So we hope you enjoy listening to this album half as much as we enjoyed playing it for you. Because we had a ball. Only real music is gonna last, all the other bullsh-t is here today and gone tomorrow.

The liner notes from NWTS credit “Jimmy Smith Rap,” and the judge in the case stated Cash Money obtained all necessary licenses for the recording.

LeBron James On Racial Slur Incident: “Being Black In America Is Tough” (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) While LeBron James is preparing to play in his seventh straight NBA Finals, the basketball megastar is having to deal with a “racially motivated slur” being painted on his Los Angeles home.

Jame spoke about the situation during a press conference for the Finals.

“No matter how much money you have, no matter how famous you are, no matter how many people admire you, being black in America is tough,” said the 4-time league MVP. “We got a long way to go, for us as a society and for us as African-Americans, until we feel equal in America.”

LeBron has been one of the most outspoken contemporary athletes on racial and social issues in this country.

In the past several years, James publicly protested against the tragic deaths of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, and Eric Garner which were all focal points of the Black Lives Matter movement.

He was also a vocal critic of former L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling who was caught on tape making racist comments.

The Los Angeles Police Department is said to be investigating the graffiti incident at the James home as a hate crime.

Lil Yachty Accused Of Stealing “Peek A Boo” Song From Another Rapper

(AllHipHop News) Lil Yachty is not even a week removed from releasing his debut studio album, but the 19-year-old Atlanta native is already facing legal issues over a record from the project.

Teenage Emotions includes the single “Peek A Boo” featuring Migos.

Another rapper known as Memphis Ash is claiming Yachty’s track is a rip off of his song “Pikachu.”

According to TMZ, Ash’s lawyer sought royalties from Lil Boat, and he is considering having “Peek A Boo” removed from online outlets like Spotify and iTunes.

The website reports:

Memphis Ash released a song called “Pikachu” last year, where he naturally rhymes the word “peek a boo” throughout it. Well apparently lawyers for Ash filed a cease & desist claiming Yachty’s track copies his verse & hook.

Couch K, Yachty’s manager, says he aint buying it, and that “Peek A Boo” is a totally different song, which is tough to argue with.

Memphis Ash’s “Pikachu” has collected over 150,000 plays on SoundCloud and 100,000 plays on YouTube.

The song was added to iTunes on November 14, 2016, where it’s labeled as “Pikachue Peekaboo.”

Suge Knight Changes Religions In Jail!?!

(AllHipHop Rumors) I don’t know what religion Suge Knight subscribed to before, but apparently he’s made a switch. By the way, if I guessed Suge’s religion, I’d say “gangsterism.” But, the sources I am hearing now are stating that Suge is now MUSLIM. Yes. The word on the street is that he is now a student of Islam. I have heard that he is now giving folks Quran and even fasting for Ramadan. I don’t get the impression that this is some scheme that Suge feels will get him off the murder charges that are pending against him. It mostly seems that Suge’s value system has changed dramatically from his days as the head of Death Row Records.

Jermaine Dupri Explains Why New Artists Need To Learn The History Of Hip Hop Culture (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Jermaine Dupri is one of the most successful producers and executives in music history.

His work with Mariah Carey, Jay Z, Usher, Destiny’s Child, Da Brat, Monica, and others has led to countless hit records.

Dupri also established himself as an effective maestro for guiding the careers of young talent such as Kris Kross and Lil Bow Wow.

In addition, the So So Def founder is currently the executive producer and star of Lifetime’s The Rap Game, a reality television series aimed at discovering emerging acts under the age of 18.

So having a legacy of creating music with both established artists and newcomers, Dupri is in a position to speak on the growing generation gap taking place in the culture.

“The education level in Hip Hop is extremely light. It’s almost probably minute at this point. That’s what it is,” says Durpi an interview with AllHipHop.com.

He adds, “You take Lil Yachty saying he never listened to Biggie… A lot of people were like, ‘Oh God, Why?!’ I didn’t take it like that. I’m taking it like, ‘Yo, I understand he’s a kid that probably was not listening to that.'”

Yachty caught backlash from some rap fans when he referred to the late The Notorious B.I.G. as “overrated.”

The 19-year-old Atlanta rapper attempted to explain his comments about Biggie by saying he did not grow up listening to the New York legend’s music.

While stating he understands Yachty’s youthful musical preferences, Dupri suggests anyone that enters the record business should learn about its history.

“Once you step into the music industry, you should educate yourself on who was the greatest,” offers Dupri.

He later expresses, “You should listen to stuff that came before you that was great and find out why. Especially somebody that people continue to keep talking about in 2017 that came out in the 90’s. If you keep hearing these names in 2017, it must be something incredible about them.”

Who Is PartyNextDoor Dissing?!

(AllHipHop Rumors) I can’t stand subliminals! Call folks out; put some names on it, or be quiet.

Singer-songwriter PartyNextDoor is dissing someone, and folks want to know who he is talking to.

I swear these “R&B singers” have the most beef. Party just made amends with singer Jeremih, but he’s already beefing with some other mystery person.

“The game done changed. You better learn how to sing, boy. We gon’ culture vulture your sh-t. Write sh-t for you and sing it better than you,” said Party.

Who is Party talking to? Folks were quick to say Drake because of the culture vulture comments, but many doubted it because the 6 God is the leader of Party’s OVO camp.

This left folks thinking that PND was taking shots at Bryson Tiller who just released his second album, ‘True To Self’, last week.

Party needs to be humble though because he’s certainly not the best singer at all. Who do you think he was referring to? Carry on!

LeBron James’ Los Angeles Home Vandalized By Racist Punks

(AllHipHop News) A Los Angeles property owned by basketball icon LeBron James has been vandalized by racists.

Police were called to the home early today Wednesday (May 31) to investigate after the Cleveland Cavaliers star’s front gate was spray painted with the ‘N’ word.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Aeron Jefferson reveals the slur had already been covered up by the time cops arrived to inspect the damage.

Detectives are now hoping to find clues about the identity of the racists behind the vandalism by scouring security footage from neighbors’’ homes, reports TMZ.com.

The sports superstar, who purchased the pad in 2015, was not present at the time of the incident.

The Ohio native is thought to be in Oakland, California preparing for the first game of the NBA Finals on Thursday (June 1), when defending champions the Cavaliers will take on the Golden State Warriors.

Ne-Yo Embraces His Baldness With New Outlook On “Self Love”

(AllHipHop News) R&B star Ne-Yo finally decided to embraced his balding head this year as part of his journey to self-love.

The “Sexy Love” hitmaker has rarely been photographed without his trademark hat since rising to fame in 2006, and it’s a fashion accessory he has relied on for more than half of his life, because his hairline started to recede before he had even hit puberty.

“My hat has been my crutch for a long time,” he admitted on U.S. breakfast show Today. “My hair started thinning… when I was 11, 12, 13, and you know how mean school kids can be, so I was allowed to wear my cap in school because I got picked on so much.

“So after a while, it just kinda became part of my face, to where I felt naked without it.”

However, after tying the knot with second wife Crystal Renay last year and becoming a father for the third time, Ne-Yo decided it was time he quit using his vast collection of headgear to try and hide his hair loss, and the singer has since grown more comfortable showing off his bare head in public.

“I told myself 2017, it’s about self-love, it’s about confidence, it’s about just living in who you are (sic) and loving it,” he explained.
