R. City Ft. 2 Chainz "I'm That"

In between writing hit records for Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Usher, Fergie, Ariana Grande and many others, Grammy-winning songwriters Theron and Timothy Thomas better known as R. City aka Rock City have been quietly working on their own project. The duo released their long anticipated first single “I’m That. . .” featuring 2 Chainz to iTunes recently.

The single is an unapologetic narrative detailing their Virgin Island heritage and offering an in-depth look into the personalities behind some of today’s biggest hits. “I’m That” is a mash up of a pulsing bassline, street wise soliloquy and undercurrents of Caribbean energy; an island interpretation of hip hop aka R. City.

“I’m That. . .” is the brainchild of R. City’s partnership with Dr. Luke for his Kemosabe/RCA venture. “Partnering with Dr. Luke has been a dream come true for us,” says Theron, “he is the first producer that really gets who we are as artists and has allowed us to be who we are in that space.” “It was important for us to release “I’m That” first,” Timothy says, “we’ve released mixtapes over the years and have had tremendous support. This record gives us the opportunity to give our fan base what they’ve come to expect on an underground level in a mainstream format. It also introduces new fans to who we are.”

lstn3

Major movers and shakers who have worked with the likes of Rick Ross, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Asap Rocky, Big Sean, Young Jeezy and a host of other stars in the game! Major record labels from the likes of Atlantic Records, Epic Records, Sony Records, Maybach Music Group, Young Money/Cash Money, Universal Music Group, and Roc Nation will be represented to scout local and independent artists, songwriters and producers.

We caught up with Dot and Juice for a Q&A about the conference. Check out the Q&A below.

1. What motivated you to start the conference here?

We wanted to bring the industry to our home town and shed some light on the talent here that often goes unnoticed.

2. Why did you involve a Chicago artist and not a local Detroit artist?

We’re fans of the Chicago music movement for sure. Although, We chose to work with Lil Durk because of his musical talent and heavy social media influence/ popularity

3. What do you want to see happen/getting out of doing a music conference?

Ideally, we would want Lstn4 to become a premier platform for artists who are blessed with musical talents but aren’t afforded the opportunity to be heard.

4. How do you feel about today’s music in today’s society?

Juice: I believe that alot of artist lack integrity and are not held accountable for the product they produce. Music has become heavily influenced by gimmicks. By searching for hungry artist that are true to their craft we hope to shift the direction in which music is headed.

Dot: Honestly, I embrace the new indie, all in house movement in music today. Although, I think originality is lacking and at times I feel that current music is too often gimmick driven. For instance, I rocks with Dej Loaf and her sound. I hate that I’ve heard way too many artists trying to replicate it. Signed and Unsigned.

5. What separates you from your competition/other music conferences?

It’s pretty evident. We present legit opportunities and incentives. Features from dope artists, track giveaways from heavy hitter producers, and the opportunity to be heard by industry insiders from top notch labels. Every talent who submits music is guaranteed a genuine listen.

6. How do you feel about music labels?

Major Labels are being forced to evolve. They still can be the industry workhorse behind an artist but with the emergence of social media, digital distribution and independent touring, artists have taken back a good chunk of control within the industry and this creates a huge opportunity for artists to usher in a regime.

7. How do you feel about the importance of social media?

Social media has become an essential tool for artists, fans, and labels to directly interact with one another.

8. What impact will your event have on the city and what impact are you trying to make on the city?
We are hoping that Lstn4 will continue to build unity amongst Detroit artists and show the world we are a factor in today’s music scene.

9. What is your connection to music?

Dot: I’ve always had a passion for production and songwriting. I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of artists. Signed and unsigned. Domestic and international. As I grew within the industry I noticed my true calling was behind the scenes on the business side of things.

Juice: I have had a love for music all my life. Growing up i began writing a lot and as I grew older I began doing my own mix cds. I was a deejay for about 5 years and built a respectable name for myself in the city. Now I enjoy looking for new talent to listen to and now with lstn4 I can give the next great artist the opportunity to be heard.

Video: Bizarre [D12] – "Never Turn Down"

In order to promote his upcoming EP, Dab Life, Bizarre has released a video for the record, “Never Turn Down.”  It’s a clip that’s as unpredictable as the man himself.  And while Biz is often regarded as an artist that pushes lyrical boundaries, this song, instead, has Biz pushing things in a different direction musically.  “Never Turn Down” is just as much EDM as it is Hip-Hop.  And if one were to think that the self-proclaimed “weirdo” is being too weird, Waka Flocka Flame and an entire fraternity party in South Carolina would beg to differ.  Check all that out and more in the video below!

Maino Arrested For Assaulting A P### Star

ICYMI, news hit earlier this week that Maino allegedly assaulted a p### star outside of a New York City club in the Meatpacking District. Now, Page Six reports that Maino turned himself into the 6th precinct Thursday morning (Oct. 23) where he was arrested for misdemeanor assault.

It is reported that the Brooklyn spitter and p### star Mellanie Monroe began to have an altercation in his truck around 3 a.m Tuesday morning (Oct.21) outside of the nightclub The Griffin. Monroe claims that Maino punched her in the stomach, in her ribs and kicked her leg. After police helped her out of his truck, Maino and Monroe separated but went in the same direction with Monroe on foot and Maino driving his vehicle.

When Monroe spotted his truck on the corner of Gansevoort and Washington streets, she threw a brush at it and they began scuffling again. The adult actress then began fighting with his security guard while trying to snatch a champagne bottle out of his hand. The two ended up falling to the ground and Monroe hit her head on the concrete.

Maino, born Jermaine Cole, says he never had any physical contact with Monroe.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Troy Ave Put The “Beat Down Hit” On ILoveMankonnen?

Now it all makes some sense. I never understood why somebody would want to beat down fluffy iLoveMakonnen. BUT… The word on the street is that Troy Ave sent a wolf to put them paws on iLoveMakonnen. Now, this makes a lot of sense if you remember back earlier this year. iLoveMakonnen dissed all the remixes of his song “Tuesday” and Troy Ave took it the hardest. Still, the fact remains that there may be no shred of evidence to support this notion. Nevertheless, that won’t stop iLoveMakonnen or the rumors that homeboy was the victim on a Tuesday. But, he wasn’t even hurt and went on to perform as if nothing happened. SOB’s, the New York club where it all happened, reportedly banished the culprit for life. I had personally thought the dude did it all in the name of Hip-Hop or something. But TMZ reported that the guy is just a disgruntled fan. Not sure if that helps or hurts the idea that Troy Ave put a “good” word in the streets for iLoveMakonnen.

Dom Kennedy Talks New Music And The Independent Grind

Since releasing his Get Home Safely album last year, Dom Kennedy has been quiet, dropping a few features here and there while touring. During a stop at Howard University’s homecoming, Dom revealed that the wait for the next album will soon be over.

“I been working on new music, man, for real,” said the OPM rep. “I been working non-stop. I put out a little groundwork for my new project before I actually went on road and then immediately after the Get Home Safely tour we was just kicking back and working.”

The LA native also spoke on his experience as an artist on the independent grind.

“I don’t really look at it as independent no more…I just look at it like we’re like everybody else. We’re just trying to make something dope and hope that people respond to it and purchase it…”

Peep the sit-down with HNHH below to also see how Dom  feels the west and east coast compare to each other.

Is Muhammad Ali OK?

I hate these types of rumors. But, I am hearing that Muhammad Ali’s health is waning dramatically in recent weeks. The champ, many regard as the G.O.A.T., is not doing so well. Now, about a week or two ago, his daughter refuted the rumors that Ali had died or was dying. The rumors just returned again. Ali is getting up there so I am bracing for the worst, as he’s one of America’s heroes. They tried to destroy him but only succeed in making him infinitely stronger.

There is a new movie on Ali. Read up on is right here ——>>> “I AM” – EXCLUSIVE: New Muhammad Ali Documentary Weaves Together Hidden Gems of Boxer’s Life
