Breeding Ground Spotlight: Chris Skillz The Gem of the Diamond State

[Editor’s Note: I added Chris Skillz on the Breeding Ground Showcase at SXSW headlined by Raekwon and Talib Kweli at the last possible moment. Chris was ready to rip the stage. When I saw him as one of my opening acts, I knew had to get him in the Breeding Ground. His name is a great way to summarize his gift, this dude has skills! – Steve Raze]

If you caught the Breeding Ground showcase at SXSW this year, then chances are that you saw a glimpse of rapper Chris Skillz.  Hailing from Dover, Delaware, Chris has been active over the past few years, releasing several mixtapes and videos that have generated his buzz to date. In addition to having had several guest appearances on MTV and Sirius radio, Chris has been speaking at various school about some of his dealings with suicide and depression to child molestation.

AllHipHop.com: How were you introduced to Hip-Hop and what kind of outlets are there for the music in Delaware?

Chris Skillz: At age 13, 7th grade, I began writing down my thoughts and writing down lyrics just to help channel what I was going through.  And I was playing sports but still writing. Then I turned 18 and I was able to get into the city element, the rest is history.  I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. To be honest, there isn’t a whole lot of outlets in Delaware. You gotta kinda use the web to your advantage.  How I got my fanbase is just solely going to shows, handing out CD’s, interacting with people, and just using the internet. Delaware’s small so it’s kind of hard to maneuver around here.

AllHipHop.com: That said, touring must have a huge part in the building of your buzz.  Have you been able to perform on the road much?

Chris Skillz: I actually opened for Mobb Deep, it was in Baltimore.  They’re like my idols, I grew up on them.  You know, Delaware, we’re like two hours away from everything. So, going to New York and performing in different shows, Connecticut, Philadelphia, just all over. SXSW was probably one of my biggest accomplishments performing. That sh*t was amazing.  Unfortunately, I was sick.  I had just got out the hospital at 9 in the morning, and then the show was at 8PM.  We went this Shade 45 thing with Sway, showed love. Then we did the Breeding Ground show and the response was crazy. The crowd was very open to the type of music that I was bringing, and then as soon as I walked off stage everyone showed love. I was able to sell some CD’s, people were buying me shots. It was definitely one of my best experiences as an artist.

AllHipHop.com: You’re open about sharing different stories and issues in your lyrics.  How have you gotten to be comfortable with sharing your story with the world? And what has the result been?

Chris Skillz: It’s just my whole life I was one of those kids that held it in, you know, what I’ve been through, or whether it’s suicidal thoughts and molestation. As an adult now, my craft… it allows me to express myself.  And I’m thinking, you know, when I’ve been through this stuff, I dwell on this stuff but maybe I can help someone who’s going through the same thing – by using hip-hop, you know, what I love to do.  Because not everybody in hip-hop talks about being molested, talks about suicide, and stuff like that. So, you know, maybe I can be that voice for someone who is going through that right at the moment to let them know that it’s okay.  You know, there’s other people that go through that, and, you know, people will listen. And then, as far as what I talk about, and it’s helped me personally because I still deal with a lot of those issues to this day.  But then it also allowed me to be able to go to my old High School, which is one of my biggest accomplishments, to talk to the kids seven straight periods, 45-minutes per class, about perseverance and chasing a dream and overcoming stuff that you may have been through in life.

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned having opened up for Mobb Deep, what are some of the elements of the ‘90s era hip-hop artists that you’ve been able to channel through your own music?

Chris Skillz: The main thing is substance, and just being able to express yourself and getting deep with your music.  I grew up on ‘Pac, I lived that era of Big, Nas, Jay, you know what I mean, Gangstarr and their track “Moment of Truth.” Just that whole essence, that’s what I grew up on and that’s the type of music that’s embedded in me.

AllHipHop.com: What are the next few months looking like for you in terms of releases?

Chris Skillz: My newest mixtape should be dropping in a month, titled Just Another Morning, Part 2.  And then shortly after that I’ll be releasing my debut independent album under State City Music, titled Yesterdays Tomorrow. And then I actually just dropped a new video called “On the Run.”  My most recent project is titled Before Dawn, which deals with a lot of suicidal issues and a lot of stuff that I’ve been through.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Diddy Scared Of Cassie? HUH?

New York Daily News lashes back at Diddy! Whoa! They are trying to say that Diddy is scared of getting in trouble with Cassie? I think Cassie is a wonderfully beautiful person, but I cannot see Sean Combs worrying about her wrath, especially since they aren’t married.

RELATED: Hip-Hop Rumors: Guess Who Diddy Was Seen Making Out With? Sorry Cassie!

This is the Diddy I know and he fears nothing! Well, maybe the IRS, but that’s everybody with money.

Here is what they are reporting.

Diddy is a bad boy for life. While the rapper took to Twitter Wednesday to say he didn’t know Kate Upton personally — Confidenti@l exclusively reported that the duo “sucked face” at LIV in Miami on March 24 — we know he does. They’ve been pals since meeting at “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Feb. 16 last year. We also know the real reason the duo are trying so hard to keep their makeout session on the down low: Sean “Diddy” Combs’ now-furious, on-again, off-again gal pal Cassie was also in Miami at the time. She was staying with the rapper that weekend, but hosting her own party at club Bamboo, and wasn’t around to keep an eye on him. She should have taken notes from some of Diddy exes, like Kim Porter, who once said, “I’m aware that he’s cheated,” or J.Lo, who called him “unfaithful” during their time together. Diddy doesn’t want his (still) straying ways leaking out, and was trying to crawl his way out of the doghouse on Wednesday.

Rocko Ft. Wiz Khalifa & Future “U.O.E.N.O. (Remix)”

With all the Rick Ross alleged “rape lyrics” in the original version, Rocko has now replaced Ross with Wiz Khalifa for the  remix. But not only will this be a remix, Rocko is going to be dropping a new remix with a new artist every Thursday for the next 5 weeks! Stay tuned!

Where Did Our Love Go?

Maybe it’s because we have been listening to Bilal. Or because we were disappointed in watching dream and Kweli fight on Twitter. Or because we the recent Rick Ross lyric controversy has us wondering what happened to love in hip-hop. There used to be hip-hop love songs, Meth and Mary’s “All I Need,” is going to play at my wedding. And ATCQ wrote entire albums about love. Hip-Hop love didn’t always mean between a man and a woman. ‘Pac and Biggie both wrote about loving their glocks. But it was still love. At one point, it was all love.

Where Did Our Love Go: Love and Relationships in the African-American Community attempts to examine the question in its title. What happened to love? Not just hip-hop, but in Black life, in a community where the numbers of married people is not just declining, it isn’t happening at all. In the hip-hop community we celebrate the marriage of T.I. and Tiny and Jay-Z and Beyonce because as examples of committed relationships, marriages, they are the exception not the rule.

So what happened to the love? Black love? Hip-Hop love? In this book with over 40 essays from illustrious writers, poets, and entertainers, love and marriage are examined. The three categories: Single, Married, Divorced touch on themes of hope, happiness, and regret.

The author talks about the “SBF: Single Black Female,” found in every city. Many of them are also known by their other moniker, “SBW: Strong Black Woman.” You know her when you see her, out on a Friday night with her girlfriends, smiling and well-dressed. Saturday morning in the beauty salon reading Essence, Sunday morning in church or watching it on TV. She goes about life doing her–working, getting degrees and promotions. But as she gets older, her mid-30’s in fact, the likelihood of her getting married is decreasing every day. And it’s not just bad news for her. According to the author, marriage is essential to maintaining the vitality and the character of a community. Lack, thereof, could be its downfall.

So, AllHipHop.com got with the editor of this anthology, Gil L. Robertson IV, to ask him the Top 5 Ways We Can Get Back to Love.

AllHipHop.com: Bilal has a new song called “Back to Love” where he asks the question, “How do we get back to love?” So, how DO we get back to love?

Gil Robertson IV: We get back to real love by focusing more on the substantive things in our lives. A lot in hip-hop focuses on “bling” and other themes that have no role in real life. We need to reevaluate our priorities and also become more connected to what our real purpose is in life. After that, I believe everything will fall into place.

AllHipHop.com: R&B, let alone, hip-hop seems like it is more about sex than love… is this indicative of the times? Is it a good or bad thing? or neither? In the book, references to R&B are “old school” what can “new school” R&B say about black love?

Gil Robertson IV: A great deal of the R&B music being release today is indicative of our times, but I don’t think it’s delivering a healthy message nor is much of it representative of what R&B music is all about.   We have allowed commercialism to derail R&B music. Traditionally, love themes played a HUGE role in R&B, but over the past two decades the tone and content of the music – it’s integrity has been allowed erode into something that is not representative of its roots. It’s my opinion that real R&B music is CENTERED around love and much of it delves into scenarios that talk about the quest for love that we all seek, as well as the great value and benefits you receive when you find someone who is willing and ready to be your life partner.

AllHipHop.com: Very little hip-hop is about love. What place does love have in the culture?

Gil Robertson IV: I think hip-hop culture is deeply rooted in love. Early hip-hop expressed a message that was rich in self and community empowerment. Also “love” was signature to many early hip-hop music hits, for example, ”All My Love,” by Queen Pen featuring Eric Williams or ‘Why Did It Have to Me,” by Sweet Tea, “The Lover In You,” by Big Daddy Kane and of course, “I Need Love,” by LL Cool J.

AllHipHop.com: Couples like Jay-Z and Beyonce and even Kim and Kanye seem to have made marriage and family in hip-hop seem like more of a power move than based in love. What’s your opinion on black power couples and how they affect the image that the rest of black America have of love and marriage?

Gil Robertson IV: From what I’ve seen of Jay-Z and Beyonce’s marriage seems a great example of what a loving and productive relationship should be. I don’t follow them, but it appears that they’ve been able to strike the right balance in their professional and personal lives. I also love how they keep their personal business private. The same for Kim and Kayne – it looks real.

I would hope that entertainment personalities are not the only examples that people see of black love. My hope is that people (young people in particular) can reference couples that they can really “touch,” like their parents or a member of their extended family as an example of the value and benefit that comes from being in a loving relationship. If those examples aren’t available, perhaps they can find someone in their community or a couple who attends their church.

AllHipHop.com: A lot of the book deals with parents. How can the hip-hop generation, as parents, be a better example for our kids?

Gil Robertson IV: Parents must remember that their first priority is to remain steadfast in our commitment to our families. I can’t stress the importance of becoming more connected to our purpose. We also need to stress the importance of sticking to the goals that we set forth for ourselves, one of which should always be providing a positive example to our children.

What do you think about love and marriage in the Black community? In the hip-hop community? Are you married? Do you think you ever will be? Chime in. Join the conversation on Facebook: Blackloveisforever and on Twitter @wheredidrlovego

Universal Music Publishing Group Sued For ‘Massive Marijuana Use’ In Offices, T.I. Implicated

(AllHipHop News) While most Americans are in favor of legalizing marijauana, one 41 year old African American security guard is taking issue. The unnamed security guard is suing Universal Music Group-owned Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), Universal Protection Services and a variety of other parties for “alleged labor violations, including a hostile work environment” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The unnamed woman worked for Universal Protection Services at UMPG’s complex in Santa Monica, CA and in the lawsuit details the unprofessionally cavalier attitude UMPG and Universal Protection Services exhibited towards marijuana use in the office. In the lawsuit, she alleges her superiors would ignore her written complaint and she was on numerous occasions informed when to “expect blazers” which is a term used to refer to marijuana smokers. At one point she recalls “artists and high-profile celebrities began visiting the premises with drugs in hand and oftentimes offering drugs to Plaintiff, which she refused,” according to the lawsuit.

One particular incident involving a high-profile celebrity is a January 7th altercation with T.I. and his entourage. Besides marijuana odor seeping out the studio T.I. was at with rapper/singer Future, the unnamed Plaintiff alleges that one of T.I.’s body guards refused to move his vehicles to the designated parking lot. According to the suit, his reasoning for refusing was he needed to be readily able to transport T.I. off the premises “if a shootout or something goes down.”

The Plaintiff was denied employment on the premises after being suspended by her operations manager following her written complaint about the January 7th incident.

A spokesman for Universal Music contacted The Hollywood Reporter about the allegations and issued this statement:

“While we cannot comment on the allegations between the plaintiff and her employer, we can say that the allegations as they relate to Universal Music Group are absurd.”

In a recent interview with NBC, R&B singer and super producer The Dream revealed that if he could put together an R&B supergroup, he’d call on Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Miguel and The Weeknd.

During the interview, The Dream touches on the riff-raff that popped up last year about The Weeknd stealing Dream’s style.

“What I love about The Weeknd is that he stays his course. He has his own carved out thing in place. Musically, you can’t be affected who somebody saying you sound like because. I would probably be compared to him if he came out first.”

J. Cole Wants To Compete With “White Folks” For Album Of The Year Grammy

(AllHipHop News) “I’m trying to compete with the white people,” said Roc Nation emcee J. Cole during a recent interview with Hartford’s Hot 93.7. The “Power Trip” rapper was speaking on how he want his upcoming album, Born Sinner, to be a competitor for the Grammy’s coveted “Album of the Year” award and not settling for just picking up trophies in the Hip-Hop categories.

Cole expressed that in his opinion Hip-Hop is still not regarded as highly other genres of music citing CBS’ decision to not air Drake’s “Rap Album of the Year” win at the this year’s ceremony and the lack of “Album of the Year” winners from the Hip-Hop community.

[ALSO READ: 55th Annual Grammy Awards Recap]

“I feel like Hip-Hop is little unappreciated,” said Cole. “Not to mention, rappers never win for album of the year. Even Kanye West, who if any rapper deserved it in the past ten years it would be Kanye West with Graduation.”

The Fayetteville, North Carolina native hopes his sophomore LP will put him alongside Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) and OutKast (Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) as the only Hip-Hop acts to ever win the Album of the Year Grammy.

While his first official single from Born Sinner, “Power Trip”, is moving up the charts, Cole took time during the Q&A to reflect on one track he missed out on being a part of.

“It was the song ‘Burn’ with Meek Mill and Big Sean. I was suppose to be on that,” admitted Cole.

He also revealed that he, Meek, and Sean had discussed doing a joint mixtape. When that project wasn’t able to materialize, the three rappers planned to release one track together, but Cole ultimately did not make it on the record.

While he missed the Meek Mill/Big Sean collabo, Cole reaffirmed that the joint album with Kendrick Lamar is still in the works, and he said his ultimate collaborations would be a song with 2Pac and Nas and one with Jay-Z and Eminem.

Cole clearly has a love for the rappers he grew up listening to, but he also appreciates the new class of emcees as well.

“There’s a lot of good stuff around the corner. Me, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick, that whole clique, Joey Bada$$… it’s a lot of heat coming.”

J. Cole’s Born Sinner LP is scheduled for release on June 25th.
