Gucci Mane Asks For Reduced Sentence

(AllHipHop News) Gucci Mane appeared in the State Court of DeKalb County and asked for a reduced sentence today (October 28), according to Atlanta’s WGCL-TV.

The case stems from an incident in which a woman was pushed out a moving car in January, after she allegedly refused a sexual proposition from the rapper.

That caused Gucci to pick up two counts of battery, two counts of reckless conduct, and disorderly conduct.

This is just one more incident in a long string of court appearances for Gucci Mane.

Despite a Tweet last week from fellow Brick Squad member Waka Flocka that said, “Gucci home,” on October 21st, Gucci remains incarcerated.

Over the years, Gucci has been charged with murder (he was acquitted), assault, drug possession and other infractions.

Comments from both parties are expected following today’s proceedings.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Jay-Z Block Some Young UK Rappers?

DID JAY-Z HATE ON SOME YOUNG UK RAPPERS?

I’m so out of the loop, its pathetic. So, there are these dudes named Konan and Krepts and they did a version of “Otis,” by Kanye West and Jigga. These dudes are from the UK and they did a pretty good job with this remix. But all of them have been removed from youtube and I think even vimeo. Sucks! They are all over twitter and pointing the finger at Jay and youtube. It seems they feel that there is some hate towards them for making money off of the ads on youtube. HM…what do you think?

Part of this rumor is even odder. I heard that Jay paid them like 90k just to go away with the remix. Now, that’s strange to me. Interesting!

AHH Stray News: Kid Rock & T.I. Shoot Video, 50’s New Book, J Cole & Abortion

(AllHipHop News) Detroit native Kid Rock shot the video for his song “Care” at Grand Circus Park in Detroit yesterday (Octobter 27th). Atlanta rapper T.I. was scheduled to arrive on set as well. In addition to his video shoot, Rock recently spoke with Reuters about a new “Care” tour this fall that will feature a host of small venues to help those in need. He also spoke with them about a promotion featuring Jim Beam bourbon, entitled “Devil’s Cut.” “I still love to do rap songs with rock guitars, I like country sounding southern rock stuff,” Kid Rock told Reuters. “I love to make heavy rock, I love the blues stuff. Every day I feel different about music but what never changes is my love for it.”

50 Cent is releasing a book on “Playground,” inspired by his own experiences on the playground. Told from the perspective of a kid named “Butterball,” 50 hopes the book will help mediate playground conflict amongst kids. “The scenarios in the book are written from the perspective of a child that is being a bully and not dealing with their emotions properly.” While some critics of the book say that the language is too rough for teens and children, 50 Cent believes the book will help bullies understand what is motivating the need to bully other kids.

J Cole, who recently finished up the last portion of a North American tour, recently released his video for the the song “Lost Ones.” The video covers the heavily debated political issue of pro-choice and pro-life political policies and is a video that is three years old. The BBGun directed video was saved for his debut project, which sold over 200,000 copies during the first week. Despite the success of his current project, J Cole recently told Hot 106’s “Rise & Grind” morning radio show that he has songs that didn’t make The Sideline Story and that he will have an album coming out at the end of June.

Exclusive: Zoe Pound’s Mac A Zoe Talks Prison Sentence; Weighs In On Miami Rap Scene

(AllHipHop News) Imprisoned Zoe Pound rap group leader Mac A Zoe recently checked in with AllHipHop.com and gave an update on his prison sentence and to let all the fans know about his situation.

Although he’s serving a life sentence for his alleged involvement in an attempted murder, Mac A Zoe believes he could be freed as early as 2012.

“Right now everything is looking beautiful, its in the courts right now, in gods hands,” Mac A Zoe told AllHipHop.com in an exclusive interview. “Everything is in favor of me , its just the matter of a day, the way i see it. They just dragging it out right now knowing there going to have to turn me loose. Their trying to get every day out of me. Hopefully by 2012 I should be out, on the other side of these bars.”

Mac A Zoe was featured in an episode of American Gangster and is allegedly one of the leaders of the feared Haitian Zoe Pound gang.

He is also associated with rap label Zoe Pound Entertainment, whose main artist Red Eyezz has recorded with artists like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Pitbull, Bun B. and others.

Although he is behind bars, Mac A Zoe is keeping a close watch on the latest information about Miami’s Hip-Hop community.

Mac A Zoe commented on a recent article in the Miami New Times written by Uncle Luke, where the legendary rapper criticized out of town artists who have taken up residence in Miami, but have allegedly not given enough back to the local communities.

Luke called out famous residents like Sean “Diddy” Combs, DJ Khaled  and Lil Wayne, in the article.

Multiple figures replied, including Lil Wayne, who took offense to the comments, while DJ Khaled hosted Luke on his radio show shortly after the article was published, where the two men discussed the issue.

Mac A Zoe stood by Uncle Luke’s statements.

“I have to agree with Luke , not trying to knock nobody, but why not help the community, why not give back,?” Mac A Zoe asked. “That’s whats wrong with alot of brothers. Greed is always going to be their downfall.”

Mac blamed the fierce competition to get rich, as the main reason most artists do not give back nowadays.

“Everyone is trying to get richer then the next man, you might have this n#### watching this n#### pockets. ‘Oh this n#### got $500 million , if I got to f### over my artists to get to where this n#### at that’s what I’m going to do. Thats the biggest problem in this rap game. That’s why alot of artists getting f**ked over and I don’t like that …you don’t put no dress on a man and pimp a ni**a”

Lupe Fiasco Talks President Obama and Past “Terrorist” Comments

Lupe Fiasco made headlines, blogs and tweets across the world when he likened President Obama to a terrorist, making the summer of 2011 just a bit hotter. Has he changed his stance on war and the president? Read on:

AllHipHop.com: I wanted to ask you just briefly, just in sort of a hindsight manner. The press made a big deal of your metaphor for President Obama as a terrorist. Do you have any regrets on that now, or maybe a different point-of-view in hindsight?

Lupe: Not at all. Not at all. I made this point when I was on Bill O’Reilly. I said just because — and it stems from Howard Zinn. Howard Zinn said war is terror, right? Howard Zinn has a very deep past, a very powerful political thinker. He was a soldier, actually fought in World War II. He was a guy deeply involved in the Civil Rights movement in the South, [author of] “A People’s History of the United States.” A very powerful dude who I look up to very much so. His words, that war on terror, war and the definition of why we wage war is definitely terror. The people who wage war, what are they? There is no… redefining it for the sake of making yourself feel better when you go to sleep at night. When you bomb a village for no reason at all other than that it’s a hindrance for rearranging some type of political structure or some type of energy structure in the world, or putting yourself in a better strategic position in a region so you can take over that region’s resources? That’s terror. That’s not bringing freedom and liberty to people by eradicating an entire town and killing thousands and thousands of people, millions of people, and standing behind that. So that’s terror. But saying that, it doesn’t negate all of the other qualities or all of the other characteristics of that person. Like Bill O’Reilly, he’s a father, he’s a great speaker, he’s a great thinker. He’s a motivator. He’s a charitable person. But all of that, in itself, also does not not make him a terrorist. You know? It does not.

AllHipHop.com:  Echoing. I think we’ve got an echo all of a sudden. Hold on.

 Lupe: Hello?

AllHipHop.com: Chelsea (publicist)?

Publicist: I’m on, I’m on. That echo is crazy. I think it stopped.

AllHipHop.com: Okay.

Lupe: Yeah, you figure out the right one?

 Publicist: Chuck, are you on?

AllHipHop.com: Yeah, I’m here.

Male: Hold on. Alright you guys, everyone’s back connected.

Lupe: Yeah, so as I was saying, all those good characteristics about him, at the same time too, don’t negate all the negative characteristics about him. That’s clear across humanity, when you critically think, that’s what you do. You think critically.

AllHipHop.com:  Right, right, okay. I’m sorry, go ahead.

Lupe: I’m sorry, I’m saying, I’m a proponent of critical thinking. You look at a situation from all points of view. You don’t bring your bias into it. You become open to that same type of conversation. You’re open to be educated, but at that same time you educate. You don’t negate any facts. You don’t create any fictions to push your own preconceptions of someone. You let someone act. I’ve met president Obama when he was still senator Obama playing basketball the night he was nominated to be president of the United States of America in Chicago, and I had this opportunity to be amongst him while he was doing that. And everybody was shaking his head. I specifically remember, as much as this moment means, I can’t shake his hand. I don’t know what he’s like. Right? I don’t know… I’ll shake his hand once I see what he does.

AllHipHop.com: You said you don’t know what he’s what?

Lupe: I said I don’t know what he’s going to do, right? I don’t know what he’s going to do. Hello?

AllHipHop.com: Yeah.

Lupe: Hello, hello? I’m sorry. I didn’t know what he was going to do, so I didn’t want to be a hypocrite and shake his hand. And then it’s like oh man, but you shook his — it was just something personal to me, I’ve got to see what this guy does. That same night he went on TV and was in Grant Park and did the whole thing, I was watching it, and he gave the speech. It was like okay, this is cool, aright. He said we need to get out of Iraq, and I’m like that’s dope. Then he said we need to get in Afghanistan, which is “where the real war is.” That’s Barack Obama. I’m like nah. I don’t agree with that. That’s not where the real war is. What war are we fighting? So from that day… I’m glad I didn’t shake his hand, because I don’t agree with that. Not to say I don’t agree with universal health care, I think that’s fantastic. Let’s repeal and redistribute and redo what we need to do to make sure there’s a fairness within American society and try to limit some of these disparities, but your second act is you bail out all the banks. Your second biggest financial contributor is AIG.

AllHipHop.com: Right.

Lupe: But you’re a great guy. You brought the Black professor and the White police officer to drink beer on the white house lawn. That’s fantastic. The next day you’re bombing some town.

Jewell Caples’ Tell-All Biography on Death Row Records Delayed

(AllHipHop News) The highly anticipated biography by former Death Row Records R&B queen Jewell Caples has been delayed, according to the singer. The book, My Blood, My Sweat and My Tears, was originally set to be released on October 25, but due to legal precautions, the book was pushed back 30 days.

“The book was delayed 30 days! I had to actually prove some stuff to the attorneys so I wouldn’t get sued,” Caples said in a statement to AllHipHop.com. As revealed in our exclusive interview in August, Jewell’s book is a tell-all, which she implies that some of her former Death Row label colleagues and bosses will not be happy about.

Caples was a fixture at Death Row from 1992-1996, when the notorious record label was home to names like Dr. Dre, Tupac, and eventually, Snoop Dogg. SKG, a female artist signed to the label in the 2000s, has also penned a book, closely titled Blood, Sweat and Tears.

Although the book has been delayed, the soundtrack to My Blood, My Sweat and My Tears was released on iTunes and Amazon.com as scheduled on October 25.

B.o.B. “Strange Clouds” Album Listening Session

B.o.B. and Atlantic Records held an exclusive album listening for his new album “Strange Clouds.” The private event took place at Tree Sounds Studios, bringing out some of Atlanta’s top DJs, media, and record company executives.
B.o.B., who also hosted the event, sat down and previewed songs off of the new album, offering a description of each song he has chosen for the project so far.

As a spectator listening to this preview, B.o.B. is – quite simply put – futuristic. The music we heard that night was amazing. B.o.B. has reached the next level in his career, and his new music clearly shows it.

Watch our video of B.o.B. speaking about performing at The White House TWICE, and what you can expect from the “Strange Cloud” album:

Words won’t give the new album justice, but at least it will have you salivating for 2012. Here is a list of the songs that were previewed by B.o.B.:

Song #1 “Strange Clouds” featuring Lil Wayne – We already knew this song was B.o.B.’s first single, and it’s a hot. If you haven’t heard it, take a listen here:

Song #2 “Play The Guitar” featuring Andre 3000. Yes it’s the return of Andre 3000 with a vengeance! B.o.B. not only holds his own on this super crazy track with 3 Stacks, he competed with him on this guitar driven/sampled, head bobbin’ track. Andre actually plays the guitar at the end of the track.

Song #3 “5 On The Kush” featuring Big KRIT In the vain of The Luniz “I Got 5 On It,” this 2012 weed song with Big KRIT is going to be a huge song in iPods as well as weed cyphers. KRIT is hot and B.o.B. continues to deliver lyrics on another level.

Song #4 “So Hard to Breathe” When I first heard this, I felt like troubled kids, the huge jobless community, and just people having hard times can relate to this song. It’s very much a feel-good song – inspirational and rhythmic all in about three minutes. Cool track.

Song #5 “Arena” featuring T.I. Teaming up with the General of Grand Hustle is always a good thing. The momentum-building track explains growth and performing in front of crowds of 50,000+ people, hence the title “Arena.” Another hit as T.I. and B.o.B. both pound this track in their own fast-paced delivery. Having them together on the same track makes this song a hit.

Song #6 “MJ” features Nelly. B.o.B. said that “this song is what I do when I’m chilling on the weekends.” When he said that the song was “MJ,” I went straight for Michael Jackson in my mind and B.o.B. listening to old Michael music. WRONG! It’s inspired by Michael Jordan, and B.o.B. is balling on this track. It’s a great track, which is a sure head nodder when you hear it in 2012. If you like basketball, you’ll love this track.

Song #7 “So Good” featuring Ryan Tedder of One Republic shows more of B.o.B.’s versatility, as he teams up with another artist/producer from the popular group. B.o.B. mentioned that working with another others helps him to deliver better music, since they both would think very similarly and they know the best way to vocally perform on the track. It’s pretty deep seeing two real musicians work, because this song is another one of the “futuristic” songs.

Bonus track:

Song #8 “Circles.” A woman at the session asked if he had any songs for the ladies, and B.o.B. replied with this bonus song of the night – possibly one of the best songs. This was tailored for the ladies and had every shaking in their seat in some way. I expect this song would make the album.

Hi-Five Reuniting, Group Member Speaks On Projects

Even if you weren’t old enough to play the “Kissing Game,” chances are you’ve heard Hi-Five’s single of the same name, at some point, on any number of urban, R&B stations around the world.

Hi-Five debuted with their self-titled hit album in 1990, which spawned singles like “I Can’t Wait Another Minute” and their biggest single, “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game).”

In 1992, just before the group’s second album, Treston Irby joined the group and helped power Hi-Five to amass a number of Top 10 singles throughout the decade.

The group took a long hiatus when lead singer Tony Thompson died from inhaling freon in 2007. Now, most of the original group members are reuniting and preparing to release a new album of material.

“We are coming together again for our fans,” group member Treston Irby told AllHipHop.com. “All true R&B fans will love the new material.”

Until the group album is ready, Treston Irby is dropping his first solo album titled 10473, an area code for the Bronx. The first single from the album is titled “Everything.” Check out the video below:

Mac Miller Hosts Listening Party for “Blue Slide Park” and Drops New Video

Rostrum Records held a listening party last night (October 27) for Mac Miller’s debut album Blue Slide Park at the infamous Quad Studios in Manhattan. The album, which is set for release on November 8, is one of 2011’s more anticipated releases following the success Mac has had over the past year as an independent artist.

Amidst a crowd of writers, bloggers, a number of industry people, and even producer Statik Selektah, Mac’s cool, calm, and collected demeanor helped ease any concerns some might have with the project, and if he has changed up his the recipe that has worked so well for him because of his debut.

Before the play button was hit on Blue Slide Park, Mac briefly addressed the crowd, saying: “I like the album, I hope y’all like the album. I don’t really want to say too much about it. I’m just going to let it play. I just want to ask for you to turn it up loud, ’cause I like to listen to it loud, and enjoy Blue Slide Park.”

From what we heard at the session, fans are in for a treat come November 8 when Blue Slide Park hits stores. In the meantime, check out the music video below for Mac’s new single, “Party on 5th Ave,” which dropped just last night:

Why Soulja Boy’s Arrest Should Cause Alarm

Although I have never been a fan of Soulja Boy’s music, I have been an enthusiastic supporter of the infectious entrepreneurial, “do-it-yourself” spirit he has instilled amongst his legion of fans – the majority of which belong to Generation Z, “The Net Generation.” With fame, and the rapid rise of DeAndre Way’s career, however, he has had to face a considerable amount of scrutiny and condemnation, in regards to a series of imprudent personal decisions that have been revealed under a bright, public spotlight.

On October 18, 2011, the 21-year rapper and four others were charged with felony possession of marijuana and guns – of a “substantial amount” – after being pulled over by police for a traffic violation in Temple, Georgia. The arrest fell exactly a week before the DVD release of his mini-documentary, Soulja Boy: The Movie, which was directed by Academy Award™ nominated director Peter Spirer (Notorious B.I.G. Bigger than LifeTupac Shakur: Thug Angel). Unfortunately, in response to the arrest, all pending press activities were postponed indefinitely.

What disturbs me the most about DeAndre’s recent arrest lay not in his decision to travel (and apparently carry) illegal drugs and weapons consciously, but rather the implied “normalcy” – as a bonafide member of America’s economic “upper crust” – to engage in such actions. On the other hand, from a purely legalistic perspective, I am dismayed by the disproportionate search of vehicles owned by Black drivers during traffic stops by law enforcement officers, which ultimately leads to racially-imbalanced percentages in arrests and rates of incarceration.

[SIDENOTE:  Contacts Between Police and the Public, 2008, a special report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics: (1) “Black drivers were about three times as likely as white drivers and about two times as likely as Hispanic drivers to be searched during a traffic stop.” (2)“During traffic stops in 2008, about 57.7% of searches of the driver only and 60.0% of searches of the vehicle only were conducted with the driver’s consent.” (3)“About 36.1% of drivers who were only physically searched and 20.7% of drivers who only had their vehicle searched believed police had a legitimate reason to do so.”]

According to Temple Police spokeswoman officer Dana Rampy, five ounces of marijuana were found in DeAndre’s transport vehicle. Considering the quantity cited by law enforcement officials, this unfortunate incident alludes to more than simple possession for “recreational” usage and instead a spotlight on frequent “illicit” usage by the artist and members of his entourage.

Above and beyond these concerns, I am deeply troubled by the felony record that has also been attached to Soulja Boy’s “permanent record.” (Historically, he is simply an addendum to a long list of fellow rappers – from DMX to T.I. to Wiz Khlaifa, and Big Boi – all of whom have been charged for the possession of controlled substances or related paraphernalia.) In light of this nagging legacy and its enduring presence in contemporary times, what does the Hip-Hop community – whether membership be defined as a producer or consumer of the culture – have to say about the ever-increasing number of its visible “role models” – even if they do not see themselves as such – being disenfranchised within socio-political frameworks?

If Hip-Hop aims to be an active and powerful agent of “undefined” change, then what steps its community take to safeguard and empower its young men who serve as “mainstream” representatives for countless millions? Who, pray-tell, is guiding and mentoring the current generation of entertainers?
