The RZA and Samuel L. Jackson Sign on for Last Dragon Remake

Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon will receive an upgrade from Samuel L. Jackson and Wu-Tang Clan rapper/producer RZA.

Jackson  is preparing to star in a remake of the 1985 cult classic.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the entertainer will play “Sho’nuff, the Shogun of Harlem,” a role played by the late Julius Carry in the original film.

For Jackson, the chance to portray the iconic villain was too good to pass up.

“I’m a huge fan of the original and look forward to bringing Sho’Nuff into the 21st century,” he said.

Released in March 1985, the original version of The Last Dragon starred Taimak as Leroy Green, a martial arts student and avid fan of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee.

In addition to Carry and Taimak the film’s supporting cast included Carl Anthony Payne II, William H. Macy, Keisha Knight-Pulliam and then-Prince protégé Vanity as Leroy’s love interest, TV music video host Laura Charles.

Although critics panned The Last Dragon, it went on to gross nearly $26 million at the box office and has become a cult classic among movie watchers.

The film’s soundtrack featured the hit DeBarge song “Rhythm of the Night” as well.

The Last Dragon also influenced various rappers as Busta Rhymes, Nas, WC, Lupe Fiasco and Fabolous reference it in songs and music videos.

The new version of the film will follow the original, as it revolves around Leroy’s quest to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment, known as the Last Dragon.

Those who achieve the high ranking possess the Glow, which makes them the greatest fighter alive.

While Jackson appears in front of the camera for The Last Dragon, the RZA will work behind the scenes as a co-producer on the Columbia Pictures remake with Dallas Jackson, John Davis of Davis Entertainment and Berry Gordy’s son Kerry Gordy.

Jackson, who currently shares the screen with Kerry Washington in the recently released feature Lakeview Terrace, will also write the screenplay for the feature.

The Last Dragon update will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Berry Gordy’s Motown Records next year.

The Last Word: Tracy Morgan Reveals a Gay Moment, Samuel L. Jackson Plays Sho Nuff, and a New Way to Trade Eva Mendes for Jessica Alba!

What’s good, young world? And Happy Halloween. After being

out of commission last week, I’m feeling much better. With less than five days

to go before a new president is crowned, the week comes with Obama taking over

prime time with a 30-minute infomercial, rumored infighting among those in the

McCain and Palin camps, and the Philadelphia Phillies capturing their second

World Series title on Wednesday (Oct. 29).

Thoughts and prayers go out to Jennifer Hudson regarding the

death of her mother, brother, and nephew. Many thanks to Nora, who was kind

enough to sub for me last week. It was much appreciated. Shout out to Faith,

Bill and Michael, who are personally responsible for my addiction to Townhouse

Toppers, those who checked in with lectures and well wishes to make sure I’m

alive and kicking, and the sounding boards for staying relevant in an

irrelevant world.

So this is what we have…the Last Word for the week ending

Oct. 31, 2008.

1. Alicia Keys Maintains Financial Control By Any Means

Necessary

Alicia Keys is not the one to play with. Especially when it

comes to her finances.

In an interview with Parade magazine, the hitmaker made it known that she will not be the subject

of any riches to rags story when speaking on her rep as a workaholic who wants

control over all aspects of her career.

“I just want to know what’s going on with my money,

where it’s going, how it is being spent,” Keys said. “I don’t give a

damn if people hate me. I’m never gonna be one of those stories you read about

where someone had all this and ended up with zero because so many people took

advantage of them.”

I guess this is another glimpse into the secret life of B’s.

I’m not mad at you, Miss Keys. Be about your money man, or in this case

Superwoman.

2. Jessica Alba, Nick Cannon and Eva Mendes Trading Cards

Up For Grabs For Charity

Have you ever wanted to trade Jessica Alba for Eva Mendes?

The idea may not be so far- fetched as a new line of celebrity trading cards

featuring the actors is coming to stores.

The line, which is called PopCardz, is being released by an

entertainment product company called A-List Global Media. Some 40 celebrities

will be featured on the PopCardz line, including Scarlett Johansson, Jared

Leto, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Raven-Symone, Nick Cannon, Ashley

Tisdale, Megan Fox, Jessica Biel, Hayden Panettiere and Christina Ricci.

The back of the cards will list various facts about the

stars such as birth dates, hometowns and mottos as well their favorite charity,

movie, song, book, place, sport, food – and a secret.

Look for PopCardz to arrive in stores starting in November.

The line will be sold in five-card packs where each card will have a 10-digit

access code printed on it that will provide additional online content at

PopCardz.com.

Proceeds from the sale of PopCardz will go to the

celebrities’ charities.

3. Gabrielle Union Unites Women for Breast Cancer

Reduction

It seems like every celebrity has a cause they hold near and

dear to their heart. And Gabrielle Union is no different as she takes breast

cancer reduction seriously.

Essence.com reports the actor took a trip to Ghana as part

of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s mission delegation trip to help reduce the

rate of breast cancer among women in the country. During her visit, Union got

an up-close look at the effects of the disease as she spent time with at least

50-60 breast cancer survivors and joined Ghana President John Kufuor for a

dedication ceremony at the HopeXchange Medical Center, a new state-of-the-art

breast cancer diagnostic and treatment facility in Kumasi.

So why would someone like Gabrielle Union lend her fame and

name to the cause of breast cancer? According to the actor, the motivation came

two years ago when a close girlfriend was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic

breast cancer.

“She was underinsured and needed money for treatment and

medications,” Union told Essence. “I

instantly became active in fund-raising to help her and then became passionate

about making sure other people didn’t have to go through what she did. I wanted

to make sure that people have the access to health care, support groups,

counseling and whatever is needed as they battle this disease.”

The disease hit Gabrielle even harder when she found out her

aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer while she was in Africa. As a result, the

entertainer is on a mission to raise awareness of breast cancer as well as

funds for research and treatment.

“By going to Ghana and seeing firsthand that African women

are suffering and dying at an alarming rate from the disease is terrible

because I know if caught early, breast cancer is treatable and survivable,”

Union said. “It just makes me want to help that much more.”

4.  The

Jackson 5 and Janet Reunite for 2009 Reunion

After much drama and up and down record sales, the Jackson 5

is coming together for an official reunion.

Jermaine Jackson confirmed the news Wednesday (Oct. 29) to

the Australian Associated Press during a

trip to Australia to help launch a “greatest hits” TV channel for

Paynet Foxtel.

“This has been a long time coming for the Jackson

family to get back together,” said Jermaine, who labeled the reunion as a

“family affair.” It is just the timing, so what we’ve been doing is

working on the music and all the logistics. It is going to be more like a

family affair – Janet’s going to open and, of course, the original

Jackson 5…Michael, Randy and the whole family. We’re in the studio, we’re

planning on being out there next year.”

As much as I would love to see the Jacksons on stage, I’ll

believe it when it happens. Don’t be surprised if the whole thing is called off

at the first of the year because of Michael’s pending legal drama, Janet’s

health issues and Tito’s impossible demands for his small but vocal entourage.

Hopefully, Joe will break out the whip or the strap to bring things back to the

way they were.

5. 112 Member Reveals Reason for Breakup

R&B groups are rare these days. While solo aspirations

and ego may cause some collectives to break up, Bad Boy Records quartet 112

fell victim to the root of all evil, money. According to former 112 singer

Michael Keith, the split came last year after he and Marvin “Slim”

Scandrick had issues with another member of the group.

“I had to leave because I found out that a certain

member of the group took my publishing check. It was made clear that it was

intended for myself and another member, Slim,” Keith told EUR’s Lee

Bailey, adding that he expects former bandmates Quinnes Parker or Daron Jones

to come clean about the check. “I’m all about trust. And once you lose that

trust with me man, it’s just time for me to make a move and focus on my solo

career. Everybody else was focused on their solo careers, the outside

endeavors, and I just decided it was time for me to make that change and go

into solo mode, Michael Keith mode.”

Although 112 had its share of arguments and infighting over

the years, Keith admits that keeping the group together was more

important.  But to devote so much

time to an effort to only have it wrecked over money was “something I

can’t forgive.”

As a result, Keith and his business manager are thinking of

filing charges regarding the situation, which comes as a difficult revelation

for the singer. Maybe they should’ve heeded the advice of their legendary label

mate, the Notorious B.I.G., when he said “Mo money, mo problems.”

6.  Tracy

Morgan Has Gay Flashback With Prince

Alcohol is a helluva drug. A few drinks can get you ready

for a good night out on the town. Too many drinks can make you like Tracy

Morgan, who recently quit wearing an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet.

The comedian reminisced over his wild past during an

interview with Complex magazine as he

revealed a brief gay moment he had when he went to a pre-Grammy party at

Prince’s house.

“When I was wilding? I got kicked out of Prince’s house.

The last time he won a Grammy, we went to the pre-Grammy party. Free booze all

night,” Morgan shared. “Prince had his band in the living room. Everybody

left the house except for me and my boy. It was 6 o’clock, 7 o’clock in the

morning, the sun was coming up, and we were still drinking. And Prince and his

wife were at the door in their pajamas and said, ‘Come on, Tracy, you’ve got to

go.’ And I was gay for about five seconds because he’s a pretty muthaf**ker. If

Prince was a woman, I would go down on him. All the way down. Swell his v#####

lips up.”

Damn. He’s talking about five seconds? That sounds like

something pre-meditated. I think Tracy may need a role model, a hug or some

type of male reinforcement and divine intervention in his life. Tracy Morgan,

you are now suspect. Case closed.

In Other Words…

* The film version of the ’80s hit TV show The A-Team has hit an obstacle. Daily Variety reports the feature, which currently has no cast

attached to it, is now without a director. John Singleton, who had signed on to

helm the film, dropped out of the picture after Twentieth Century Fox said it

wanted more time to develop the script.

As a result, The A-Team

is now set to hit theatres on June 11, 2010. The film, which had gone through

various rewrites, was originally slated to come out June 12, 2009.

* Days after rumors surfaced about Donnie Klang making

racist comments about being on his label Bad Boy, the singer has issued a

statement addressing the situation and the source that reported the story.

 “A

popular website posted a completely fabricated story about me yesterday, and

now it’s circulating around the internet. It is important for me to speak to my

fans and let them know that the story is 100% fiction,” Klang said. “It’s

completely made up! I love all my fans and all people of various racial,

ethnic, and religious backgrounds. I would never, in any way, say anything

racially derogatory. In addition, I love my Bad Boy family and have nothing but

love for the entire label and staff. Don’t believe the lies! The story is

absolutely false.”

* We all know that Samuel L. Jackson is a bad m###, but the

actor is doing his part to live up to that description as he gets set to play

Sho’nuff, the Shogun of Harlem in a remake of Berry Gordy’s 1985 cult classic The

Last Dragon. No other casting news has been

announced so far for the film, which will follow the plot of the original film

as it centers on Sho’nuff’s rival Leroy Green and his quest to achieve the

highest level of martial arts accomplishment, known as the Last Dragon.

* Leonardo DiCaprio is back again to encourage people to

vote. The actor, who lined up stars like Usher and Justin Timberlake in his

first PSA, 5 Friends, has gathered Will Smith, Harrison Ford, Scarlett

Johansson, Tom Cruise and Shia LaBeouf for a new PSA, titled 5 More Friends.

The new group of celebs go against the first PSA’s sarcastic do not vote

message as Cruise asks, “‘Don’t vote?’ Now, what do you mean ‘Don’t vote?’”

After Steven Spielberg explains the reason behind 5 Friends

to Cruise, the other stars reveal why they are voting in this year’s election.

After which, a web address appears at the end of 5 More Friends where you can

find your local voting polls.

DJ UNK: Perfect Balance

DJ UNK bounced onto the scene a year or so ago and wanted us to “Walk It Out” and “2 Step.” It seemed that you could not go to a club without hearing a DJ Unk track from his debut Beat’n Down Yo Block, whose main goal was to move the crowd. Just when we thought the crunk scene was ending, Unk is looking to revive it. Besides being an avid advisor on all things crunk, he is also a family man. With that being said, you will not hear DJ Unk describing scenes of shoot outs or pushing weight. Why? Unk is tired of seeing people fight in the club.  Unk’s sophomore, Second Season, drops November 4th and here explains how one goes from being behind the wheels of steels to in front of the mic. Searching for the perfect balance, he promises that this album will still set the club off and keep the party going. Not to mention, keep the grown and sexy’s attention too. AllHipHop.com: For those who aren’t familiar with your background, why did you decide to get involved hands on with rap after being a DJ?DJ UNK: I always wanted to try something new. I had the honor of going out while I was DJ’ing for the first time with Yung One. He is one of Swizz Beat’z artists. I saw a lot of things on the road DJ’ing for him. Seeing how the whole artist thing works. The radio interviews, meetings and greetings. I was looking at my own lifestyle and how I wanted so much. The house, the cars, the clothe,. I wanted all of that. I knew I couldn’t get that s**t DJ’ing.  So, I thought that when this tour was over I was going to try something new and this is what happened.

“When my homeboys Dem Franchize Bozs did their first single ‘Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It’ and it blew, I was like this is the movement right here. I did my homework seeing what was going on in clubs and I came up with ‘Walk It Out.’ It opened up doors for other artists like Souljah Boy.”

AllHipHop.com: Your music is fun. Why did you go in that direction with your music?UNK: I started DJ’ing at this club called Club Krucial and a lot of other clubs. We had the whole dance movement. I notice when I would put on a Young Jeezy record the club would respond. But when I would put on a dance record the club would really get off the chain. I didn’t want to talk about dope and saying I killed somebody. I’m not gonna win like that. When my homeboys Dem Franchize Bozs did their first single “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It” and it blew, I was like this is the movement right here. I gotta get them crunk.  I did my homework seeing what was going on in clubs and I came up with “Walk It Out.” It opened up doors for other artists like Souljah Boy. We were trying to make people smile. We got tired of seeing people fighting. I just wanted to bring that to the club.DJ Unk “Show Out” VideoAllHipHop.com: Your songs always have a dance theme to them. Do you develop the dances?UNK: The people who are in clubs do. They really don’t know what they are doing they are just having fun. You might go to the club and see everybody digging in their nose. So when the song comes on everybody is digging in their nose. Whatever they are feeling. AllHipHop.com: Hmmm. Tell me about the new single “Show Out.” UNK: It is my first single from my new album. I’m letting all my fans know that I’m back and we gonna show out. Unk about to get the club back.AllHipHop.com: Are you concerned about the sophomore jinx?UNK: Nah. I wasn’t nervous putting it together. That was the fun part. Making sure everything is right. There is no jinx or pressure. I went to the club when I wanted to record to get an idea. I know I got a good thing going because I have my city with me.

“We have to see what’s new in the club. The new slang, music. Other artists don’t work that way. They are in the studio all damn day, smoking their ass off trying to think of a song but can’t even get on the radio.”

AllHipHop.com: What was the most fun aspect of creating this album versus the most difficult?UNK: The fun part is, me as an artist, I don’t work like other artists. Sitting in the studio all day and all night trying to come up with some songs. I go out and go to clubs. I write lyrics to my songs on my SideKick. My ideas. We go out and have fun while we are working. We have to see what’s new in the club. The new slang, music. Other artists don’t work that way. They are in the studio all damn day, smoking their ass off trying to think of a song but can’t even get on the radio. So, it’s an honor and a blessing to work like this. The difficult part was making sure it was all right.AllHipHop.com: Have you approached this album differently from the first?UNK: That’s a part of my growth.  I have grown and sexy on this album. I still keep it for the streets but it’s about growth.AllHipHop.com: You said you have grown and sexy, what else is different on this album?UNK: New sound, new chemistry. I didn’t get a chance to get into the other stuff on Beat’n Down Yo Block. When they heard “Walk It Out” they wanted more of that. I had other songs on the album that could have gotten love. This album here is incredible. There is a song on it for everybody. It is one of those where you can just put it in and ride to it. AllHipHop.com: Any guest appearances on the album?UNK: Three Six Mafia, Sean Kingston, Ray J, Ying Yang Twins. Second Season, you are gonna love it. I call it Obama and Unk.AllHipHop.com: Tell me something about you that your fans may not know.UNK: I’m a family man. When I’m not doing my thing or working I’m at home with my kids trying to make sure they are straight. I got three girls. This Unk’s house not Run’s House.AllHipHop.com: How do you balance your career with your girls?UNK: It makes me mad sometimes because I’m gone so much. But their mother is so incredible and she is on point. As long as she is on point I can stay on point. AllHipHop.com: Anything else you want to add?UNK: I have a song called “In Yo Face”. It is on the 2009 NBA video game [NBA 2K9]. The new album Second Season in stores November 4th.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Who Is Creepin On Wifey? Eminem Talks Mariah! Mysonne Calls I.I. A Snitch! How Lil Wayne Delivered His Son!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

JAY –Z CONTINUES TO CAMPAIGN FOR OBAMA

Obama didn’t ask, but he sure received. My homey K-Slim from Cleveland State University in Ohio hit me up and told me that Jay-Z just did a free concert there just yesterday! I heard he rocked it, as usual. What was really interesting was that Jay did this show even though his voice was giving out, I heard. K-Slim tells me that he came on at about 9 pm and we didn’t leave till about 11 pm. He ended up throwing half of his fresh fit in the crowd… Including his crispy Lebron VI’s. Lebron kicked it on stage, but I heard he was messing up all the words to Jay’s songs.

BARACK IS TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH JENNIFER HUDSON

Later in the rumors, you will see Mysonne go off on T.I. for doing a PSA for Crime Stoppers. Whenever I think of “stop snitching,” I think of people like Julian, Jennifer Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew. He took two to the head and somebody cut his hand off. I just wanted to say that.

So, Barack Obama is reportedly trying to get in touch with Jennifer Hudson to offer her words of encouragement in this time of need. What is crazy is the future president (I hope) has been unable to reach the entertainer! That’s crazy! I mean, not crazy, but just means that Jennifer is just that deep into her sorrow. That’s understandable but I just think its crazy that Barack can’t get at anybody.

Here is what you need to know now. Jennifer Hudson and her family have unveiled a new foundation for families of murder victims. Here is the information:

EMINEM TALKS MARIAH CAREY…IN NEW BOOK

Here are some excerpts from Eminem’s new book, where he addresses Mariah Carey. Somebody typed it up and sent it so excuse any sort of minor discrepancies.

With ‘superman’ all I ever heard people talk about is Mariah Carey. Did she inspire it? Yes, she kind of did. I don’t want to get into tabloid gossip, but if you read between the lines and listen to it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I recorded it toward the end of the Eminem show. I wanted to do it with ll cool j kind of whisper, like in his song ‘I need love’

That was the thing for a while with the good old-school love songs, to be gentle and playful with your voice. In ‘superman’ the girl thinks I’m serenading her, but I’m really telling her I’m sick of her. I’d just gotten divorced from Kim, and I wasn’t going down the same road I’d already been on. This was my way of saying, I’m not going to make a love song.

Em’s album is looking more like March and I am hearing that Jay is likely to come out then now, not February.

DID MARY JANE OVERDOSE ON SHAQ STRESS?

Do you remember the name Mary Jane? I don’t mean that stuff from the Alkaholiks song. I mean that wanna be rapper that got a restraining order against Shaquille O’Neal? She charged that the big guy was threatening to do harm to her beautiful body. Sorry about that. Anyway, I heard Mary Jane has been or was admitted to the hospital in the last month or so. She reportedly overdosed on something drug-related. Now, this is all conjecture and rumor, but I heard she’s under a lot of stress.

WHO IS CREEPING?

Over the weekend, I heard a certain pint-sized mogul went to the movies over the weekend to see “Saw.” Well, he was allegedly ballin’ like money ain’t a thing with a dope Escalade, three members of his entourage, some bodyguards and others. What is interesting is that in the process of going to see “Saw” (get it…see saw?)..sorry. In the process of them going to watch the movie, it appeared that they all linked up with some super hot chicks. Inside the movie, the mogul reportedly tried to play it off like he wasn’t with the girls. You know said mogul is engaged with a superstar. Was he creepin’ or trying to avoid a situation when he got home?

MORE ON LIL’ WAYNE’S SOBRIETY

I am not all into the “lean” culture, but one of my readers is. He hipped me to the mess and reinforced why Wayne is more sober than high.

“You brought up a good point saying Lil Wayne actually doesn’t do as many drugs as he says he does. You can ask anybody that is part of the “syrup culture” in Houston and they will tell you that drinking large amounts of Promethyzine w/ Codeine causes you to retain water and put on large amounts of weight in a small period of time. Taking one look at Wayne’s skinny ass, anyone in Houston will tell you that ain’t syrup in his styrofoam cup. I’m no doctor, but in Houston we know the side effects of syrup better than most doctors.”

MYSONNE DISSES T.I. FOR BEING A LAW ABIDING…SNITCH?

LOL! T.I. is doing commercials for crime stoppers. I will say this that if anybody can say something, Mysonne can. He did a stretch in the bing. I think Tip is handling his family business.

I’m afraid I want to see n***as tighten up and recognize the forces of evil around us. Get money the right way. Word to James Evans!

MAKE ‘EM SAY SHO NUFF!

Not a rumor: RZA To Co-Produce “The Last Dragon” Remake, Samuel L Jackson Stars

Samuel L. Jackson is set to star in a remake of the 1985 cult classic, “The Last Dragon” with The RZA of The Wu-Tang Clan acting as the co-producer of the movie. Jackson will reprise Sho’nuff (Shogun of Harlem), which was originally played by the late Julius Carry. RIP. I am not sure I love this idea, but will wait and see.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIESI don’t know how true this is, but I got word that Big Kuntry of Grand Hustle might have been knocked out by a member of D4L, Shawty Lo’s crew. I found no corroborating evidence of this.

I heard Slim from 112 has started a new group called IVY LEEGUE. Remember that name, because they are a rap act – not sangers!

I had a lil’ mistake yesterday. Ciara sat down with that babe Angela Lee from “Lip Service” not Angie Martinez of Hot 97.

The Jackons, including Mike and Janet, are supposedly going on a world tour in 09!

RANDOM QUOTES

At a red carpet interview, Soulja Boy reportedly said the following:

“Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we’d still be in Africa.

We wouldn’t be here [in America] to get this ice and tattoos.”

If he said hat, I am finished with this boy.

Speaking of boy, Lil Wayne explains how he did in the delivery room:

“I delivered him. I held the left leg the whole time. It was nasty, very nasty, but it was wonderful. Oct. 22, 9:25 a.m., 7 lbs., 12 oz. He’s the best thing to ever happen to me, next to my daughter.”

Diddy’s artist Donnie Klang really let it all out in an interview with a New York radio station. Of his boss and Black people, he said:

“I’m going to tell you the truth … its hell working with Diddy, he never really gives you a say dealing with your career – its always what he wants. He is trying to make me something I’m not. He wants me to act Black … I’m not sure why maybe because the majority of the Bad boy family is Black. I’m not really sure if this is the place for me anymore, but I’m trying to work through with this and to tell you the truth its really hard to work with Black people in general.”

Well, that was very fast. Michael Issues statement on tour:

“My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we’ve certainly shared many great experiences, but at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them. I am now in the studio developing new and exciting projects that I look forward to sharing with my fans in concert soon.”

R.I.P. JAM MASTER JAY

Shout out to DJ Nabs for this.

ILL PICS

And girls love dude for his cuteness.

JOE BUDDEN VS JOELL ORTIZ – WHO WAS HOTTER?

This is real funny. It looks like this super group thing is going to happen – Royce, Joe, Joell, but where is Crooked I? At any rate, look at this:

MORE PHILLY FAN MAYHEM!

Here is another report live from the streets of Philly as the Phillies win The coveted World Series:

These fans were on some next level out here. You would have thought that the Center City area would have been the least affected since it’s the most protected (that rhymed). But it looks like it wasn’t. They lit a commercial sized garbage bin on fire and turned a car over on Sansom street. The F.Y.E. on Broad and Chestnut had the glass in their revolving doors smashed as well as two of their HUGE plate glass windows shattered. H&M down the street suffered the same fate with one of theirs but they had safety glass, F.Y.E. didn’t. A jeans and sneaker store doors away had both their windows smashed but luckily they had a security gate behind it. They even managed to make a lifelike iron statue of a man lean (see pic). I walked passed cars with broken mirrors and busted windows. They got vandalized. There were news vans up and down Chestnut Street, no doubt reporting the aftermath of the mayhem.

One more unedited email so don’t snitch on me for edits!

dear illseed (i hope this is illseed if not, f**k it)

Black Milk: Tronic (Album Review)

For the past 10 years Detroit has been cultivating an eclectic Hip-Hop scene featuring everything from avant-garde to mainstream emcees. The next up in the city’s long tradition of talented musicians is emcee/producer Black Milk, who since 2004 has plied his trade with notable cosigns from Pharaohe Monch, Slum Village, and the late J Dilla. Now with several well received solo LPs on his ledger and extensive production work on Elzhi’s The Preface, Black Milk seeks to continue raising his profile with his fifth solo album Tronic (Fat Beats).

Knowing that his audience is ever-expanding, Milk uses the opening salvo “Long Story Short” to educate uninformed listeners on his humble beginnings learning production techniques on a karaoke machine, to exchanging board notes with J Dilla and touring with D-12. Accentuating the triumphant narrative is soul crooner Dwele, who surprises by showcasing his skills on the trumpet to close out the track.

Unlike many of his underground peers, Black Milk displays the ability to create melodic, radio-friendly songs that don’t come off stilted or disingenuous. “Bond 4 Life” sacrifices no lyrical respectability despite a standard R&B centered hook, and the quirky beat and tongue in cheek lyrics of “Without U” work well in capturing the awkwardness of new love.

On his own, Milk’s work becomes unique when the Detroit native experiments with traditional Hip-Hop song structures. Instead of the typical rhyme then hook, on “Try” and “Tronic Summer” Black Milk instead extends the vocal sample and instrumentation in parts to keep the listener engaged and prevent monotony.

The big guests of the LP also uphold their end. Royce Da 5’9 and Black Milk elevate a serviceable speed up soul sample on “Losing Out” by deconstructing it with respective rhetorical and manifesto-heavy rhymes. “The Matrix” proves to be a highlight, with DJ Premier supplying his signature chorus cutting and underground luminaries Sean Price and Pharoahe Monch playing the roles of all-star cleanup men.

The only misstep is when Black Milk gets a little too comfortable with his production techniques, and the LP falls into a pedestrian rhythm during its early second half as seen on the filler tracks “Hell Yeah” and “Overdose.”

Black Milk’s work as an emcee and producer continues to show exponential growth in the three years since his solo debut Sound Of The City, Vol. 1. And to date, in Tronic he offers his most accessible LP for those yet to be initiated into the sounds of one of Detroit’s best kept secrets.

Ice Cube Preps Cop Series for NBC

Hip-Hop legend Ice Cube is expanding his entertainment portfolio to television, signing on as head writer of a still unnamed buddy cop series for NBC.

The show is being produced by Cube’s Cube Vision company, and NBC chairman Ben Silverman expects the West Coast veteran to bring the same success he’s had in music and film to the network.

“As we continue to expand our roster of diverse talent both on-camera and behind the camera, a guy like Ice Cube, who’s multi-talented, is someone we really wanted to be in business with,” Silverman explained. “He’s had an amazing career, to have gone from NWA to this.”

Although Cube originally had no plans to appear in the series, NBC executives are pushing for him to bring his star power to the series in the form of guest appearances.

Also, the execs are hopeful the star’s extensive back catalog of classic, seminal Hip-Hop music can be utilized for the show’s opening credits, or possibly have Cube create a new song entirely.

“We really want to capture his voice and his eye for talent, and his producing acumen,” Silverman continued. “If he appeared in the pilot or series, we’d be really excited about that.”

Cube’s latest project marks a return to television, as the Compton native also executive produced the Showtime adaption of his hit film Barbershop, and FX’s Black. White.

Ice Cube returned to music this year with his well-received eighth studio album Raw Footage.

Powered by the singles “Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It,” “Do Ya Thang,” and “Why Me,” the West Coast veteran is on pace to have his second consecutive best-selling independent Hip-Hop album of the year.

Earlier this month, Cube also excited the Hip-Hop world by agreeing to Scarface’s idea for a supergroup album including them and acclaimed Queens lyricist Nas.

At press time, NBC has confirmed Cube’s new series will be an hour long, but have not verified a series premier date.

Nationwide Call Issued To DJ’s For Final Election Push

With just a few days until the November 4 presidential election, Barack Obama’s campaign has requested the help of Hip-Hop’s DJs and radio personalities around the country to urge young voters to make it out to the polls.

In a nationwide conference call held on Tuesday (October 28) afternoon, mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and Democratic presidential strategist/CNN correspondent Donna Brazile eplained to DJs the importance they already hold as community organizers, and their greater potential in this historic election.

“I’ve never felt this way in life my life about politics. Our main goal now should be stressing to young people the importance of braving the long lines to make their voices heard for Barack,” Combs stated. “As DJs and music personalities we have to educate them to go to the polls prepared to wait. Bring an Ipod, go with friends, whatever needs to be done. If our forefathers can get killed fighting for us during the Civil Rights Movement and dragged to jail, the least we can do is stand in line for a few hours. We do more just to get tickets to a Mary J. or Jay-Z concert.”

Brazile, the first African-American to direct a major presidential campaign, echoed Diddy’s words, but also emphasized the importance of knowing the election rules at the state level.

“Each state differs in their polling policies regarding dress and items needed for first time voters,” said Brazile, who managed the Al Gore-Joe Lieberman ticket in 2000.

“Make sure to do your research on state laws to prevent any mishaps on Election Day,” Brazile stressed. “Remember, as DJs you hold a powerful voice as representatives of the people. You all hold more power in your words than any politician simply because you have more credibility being in these communities. And be prepared in the last week for the continuous negative attacks we’ve seen from the McCain campaign.”

Millions of Americans had already cast their ballots early for this historic election, despite wait times in some areas exceeding 8 hours.

Experts expect this year’s total turnout to shatter the 1960, modern Election Day record, where 64% of the country voted in the race between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

Chaka Khan: Funks Hip-Hop

Born Yvette Marie Stevens, Chaka Khan, who changed her name while

working as a teen for the Black Panthers as part of their Free Breakfast For

Children program, is a modern day entertainment icon. From her group work as

part of Rufus to her hugely successful solo career, she’s worked with everyone

from Prince to Mary J. Blige, and her final product is always of a high

standard.

If it’s not her undeniable musical prowess, it’s her willingness to give

back that sets her apart from the rest of the pack. Not only is Chaka always prepared

to help other musicians when called upon – her song “Through The Fire”

was resurrected with her permission when Kanye West sampled it on his debut

smash “Through The Wire.”

Chaka also has her very own charity Foundation. Formed in 1999, the Chaka

Khan Foundation helps women and children in crisis. Chaka has taken part in

many benefits dedicated to the conquering of AIDS and HIV prevention. Basically

she’s someone who wants to give back.

Returning with a new album, which has already won two Grammy Awards,

Chaka Khan has teamed up with virtuoso production team Jimmy Jam & Terry

Lewis to bring us Funk This. AllHipHop.com Alternatives managed

to catch a bit of time with the legendary lady of soul on a quick promo trip to

the UK.

AllHipHop.com

Alternatives: It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new from you. Why

did you decide to release an album now?

Chaka

Khan: It really wasn’t that I decided to do an album now. I’ve courted a few

labels over a ten-year period, and then I decided things weren’t really right

for me. So I continued to work on the road to pay the bills, and then finally a

label came to me and wanted to sign me. They were a great label, very

supportive and very helpful. Like many of my previous labels, they tried to

find me the right producers to work with, which they couldn’t.

Then my

sister/manager Tammy said, “Why don’t we take Jam & Lewis up on their offer

that they want to work with you?” We had been talking about it for years in

passing, but had never laid anything down. Finally they moved from Minneapolis

to Santa Monica, right up the street from me, and I paid them a visit. I asked

them if they’d be interested in working with me. They were very interested, and

then that’s where the new album started.

AHHA: Funk

This contains a few covers and some of your own records. How did the

concept come about that you were going to do the album this way?

Chaka

Khan: I have so many songs that have accumulated over the years, and we

wanted to make sure that this album had some chance at commercial success. So,

some of the covers are for that reason. We picked only the best, without

sticking to a theme. There is a sort of underlining theme to the album but it’s

very hidden. I don’t even know what it is.

Everything

just goes together nicely. I wanted it to go back to me and my authentic roots,

the organic Chaka Khan. Basically what made people fall in love with me in the

first place was hearing me with Rufus doing live music on a board with live

musicians, as opposed to doing it via the internet and what not.

AHHA: Following

the US release of the album you won two Grammy Awards for it. How does it feel

to still be winning Grammy’s this far in to your career?

Chaka

Khan: It’s special. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised to have even

been nominated. I mean…I was expecting something from this album; I just wasn’t

sure what. I didn’t expect to win two Grammy’s. I can tell you that for

nothing. All my friends were telling me I was going to win both. I was like,

“Yeah, right!” I was just happy to have even been acknowledged. I then gave it

no more thought and carried on working. And lo and behold I got them both. To

me, that was a sign that we did right by this album.

AHHA: You’ve

had a long and successful career in music. What would you say has been the key

to your success? What keeps you going?

Chaka

Khan: I mean c’mon, first of all it takes a certain amount of talent to stay

relevant. And people have to recognize that. They need to know it and feel it.

That’s part of it. I’ve paid my dues. I’ve paid a lot of dues in fact. I’ve

been through a lot and I think because of that people recognise that I am

authentic, at least in my musical communication. Other than that, I don’t

really look at it or think about it that much. I’m just thankful.

AHHA: While

some of today’s youngsters may not know who you are, especially in physical

form, you allowed Kanye West, who at the time was trying to get his music

heard, to sample your hit “Through The Fire.”

It was

definitely an important moment in music. You effectively helped kick start the

career of one of today’s most credible Hip-Hop artists. How did this come

about? Did you think it would help him? And how important do you think it is to

share samples with other artists?

Chaka

Khan: I thought it would help him. I really did. I did for a whole different

reason though. He called me and asked me if he could use the song because he

had been in an amazing accident and my song helped him to recover. So how could

I say no? That was my primary reason for agreeing to it. Of course I didn’t

expect him to speed it up and make me sound like a chipmunk.

It wasn’t

until later I found out that his trademark was in fact speeding up older

records and using them on his tracks. I’m just glad I was of some assistance in

helping him get better. However, I do believe there should be a lot more

legislation when it comes to using other people’s music. If you can’t play the

music, then why bother? Be a DJ. That’s how I feel personally.

If you’re

going to be a musician, be a musician. Play it. Play the instrument or get

somebody that can to play it, because I think that things like Pro Tools and

other electronic recording equipment are made to enhance music that’s already

been done. It’s used to freak it, tweak it, whatever…

AHHA: Music

has changed a lot since you first burst on to the scene. So who is it that you

listen to?

Chaka

Khan: Through the years I’ve gone through five-year patches where I’ll be in

to five or six CD’s. That’s it. And I don’t really listen to music at home. I

like to listen to it in the car. So in my car right now I think there is Joni

[Mitchell], Miles [Davis] – “Tutu” is probably in there, Kim Burrell, Rahsaan

Patterson, Mica Paris. Oh, and I love Anthony Hamilton. He’s not in my car

though. I need to get him in my car. I’m really particular when it comes to

what I’m listening to. I don’t listen to the radio. Even satellite stuff I

don’t deal with. I hate being at the mercy of someone else’s selection. I have

to have my own. I can’t trash out my ears otherwise it messes with me. I need

music equilibrium.

AHHA: You’re

back in the UK promoting the new album, which includes a few performances, one

being at the O2 Arena. What is it about touring that you love so much?

Chaka

Khan: That’s what it’s all about. At the end of the day it’s about

communicating person to person. It’s about the giving of yourself, the offering

of yourself, and then getting back whatever is given back to you. There’s

nothing like it. If you want to talk about something that’s addictive, then

performing is it. Just that feeling once you step on stage is enough to drive

you to do it over and over again.

AHHA: What’s

next for you?

Chaka

Khan: Well… working this CD to death, to the limit, working it to the

rafters, and doing all that I can to make a success of it. Then it’s back in to

the studio I go. I also have a Foundation, which I’m going to hook up with a

few key people here in the UK to help further it. It’s a Foundation that helps

children and women in crisis. We have an education initiative that we’re

working on right now. We also work with autism.Chaka Khan Performing at the Diesel xXx Party

FIRST CRACK: AllHipHop & Imeem Present The Renaissance

From early on, you just knew that Q-Tip was going to come with some heat.  Through classic material with A Tribe Called Quest, to burning through numerous guest appearances, the flavor of the Abstract was unmistakeable. His musical touch was felt even further.  His hand was present on one of Hip-Hop’s finest works Illmatic and was unseen by the public but felt on Organized Konfusion’s second album and on Mobb Deep’s coming out party The Infamous.Following the end of the Tribe run, Q-Tip went out on his own and assaulted the charts with “Vivrant Thing” and “Breath & Stop,” totally going left of his previous bohemian projection. Here we are, in 2008, and rap is outta control.  Political socio-economic forces have interrupted our sheepish existence and yet as a whole, rappers can’t seem to get off the block. In this climate we’ve also seen a market shift, where quantity and quality are pitted against each other, and style can’t seem to get along with substance the way that it used to in Hip-Hop.  There is no dearth in good product by any means but there is an enormous amount of product to sort through.  In this climate, Q-Tip has decided to help us out and bring us back while moving forward with the music.  Without further ado, here is The Renaissance.  Enjoy.

Rapper Bleu DaVinci Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison

BMF Entertainment’s main rapper Bleu DaVinci was sentenced to five years and four months in federal prison, after being convicted for conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

The rapper was accused and convicted of distributing multiple kilos of cocaine starting around 2003 through a multi-city drug network controlled by Black Mafia Family’s founders, Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and his brother, Terry “Southwest T” Flenory.

DaVinci, born Barima McKnight and nine other remaining defendants in the government’s case against BMF were handed down sentences yesterday (October 29) ranging from 5 years to 16 in federal prison.

Prosecutors accused the BMF organization of running a massive, multistate cocaine empire based out of Los Angeles and Atlanta.

BMF, which was founded in the early 1990’s in Detroit, earned over $270 million dollars by distributing cocaine throughout the country.

Over 500 people were associated with BMF in numerous states, including Florida, Michigan, Georgia, California, Missouri and Tennessee.

In September of 2008, both Flenory brothers were sentenced to 30 years in prison each for overseeing the drug empire.

In addition to 40 other co-conspirators, the brothers’ 60-year-old father, Charles Flenory was even sentenced to 18 months in prison, for using drug proceeds to pay for renovations on Terry’s house.

In June of 2008, famed Hip-Hop jeweler Jacob “The Jeweler” Arabov was also sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison, for falsifying records and giving false statements to investigators and helping to launder the drug money.

Prosecutors believed DaVinci also took over BMF’s operations while the Big Meech, Southwest T and a third in command – Chad “J-Bo” Brown were awaiting their sentences.

Brown had previously refused to cooperate with authorities and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Assaulted Woman Claims Suge & Associate Hid Masters

The small record label which acquired Death Row Records’ assets back in July has learned that Suge Knight and a long-time associate may have hidden a portion of the label’s catalog, to avoid having the items included in the sale.

According to Global Music Group’s attorney, Michael J. Collesano, a woman approached him last weekend, claiming to be the ex-girl of Knight’s associate, Carl “Butch” Small.

Collesano said Small helped run Death Row studios and was once listed as one of the label’s principals.

The woman, whose name was only revealed in court documents, said that during the course of their 18-month relationship, Small revealed to her that between 2001 and 2005, he removed a series of master recordings, videos and other property from the Pacific Coast Title Archives in California.

As a result of the move, those items were not inventoried with the assets purchased by Global Music Group.

The woman revealed many of these items to officials in Detroit, Michigan earlier this month, after she was allegedly attacked by Small on October 1.

The following day, having obtained an order of protection against Small, who she claimed tried to kill her, she was accompanied by Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Schmidt to a storage unity in Burlington, Michigan under her name.

Schmidt proceeded to confiscate several black boxes containing what appear to be certain master recordings and videos.

The woman claims that she may also have additional items in her possession, which she would like to return to their rightful owners.

“Global Music Group of Delaware has arranged financing to acquire the assets and stands ready to acquire the record label once the Trustee identifies the inventory to a certainty,” Collesano said. “We cannot see how anyone can bid on the assets with such a cloud surrounding the property being sold. In fact, on September 19, 2008, we submitted a bid that we hope the trustee will consider at this time, but our purchase will require proper due diligence.”

Collesano filed a Declaration with the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Court to investigate these new developments.
