Open letter from Jay Z, Diddy,Mary J Blige, and Kevin Liles

It ain’t over, until it’s over. There is still so much work to be done.

The thrill of victory is just one week away.  We hear it in the streets,

we feel it in our hearts and it’s burning in our souls. Together we

have successfully registered the most young voters in the history of

the modern political process. We called a State Of Emergency on October

3rd at 6:00AM and our culture stood up and recognized the importance of

registering millions of voters. From 1st time voters who have just come

of age to vote, to those who are participating for the 1st time in the

voting process.  Your commitment to Change will continue to ring across

our America, because we all are in the Right State Of Mind

Where it stands today, we are on the verge of making history, the kind

of history that will be a part of our culture’s legacy. The kind of

history that bridges the gap between race, religion and culture, the

kind of history that will ignite a light that shines bright from

generation to generation, screaming that our voice does matter and our

vote does count.  The kind of history that will enable the next

generation of leaders to encourage vision, not division, to encourage

hope, not hopelessness, to encourage the power of the people, not the

power politics of the few.

With only 7 days left before we vote for change, let’s hold ourselves

accountable and responsible. No more excuses, no more mistakes and no

more time to waste. If you have the opportunity to vote early in your

state then vote today. If you are voting on November 4th, make

preparation today. Bring your family and friends and plan for the party

at the poles. Make November 4th the day we celebrate change – The day

we celebrate freedom of choice. The day we celebrate power of all

people. Let’s all come together on November 4th, because it’s a family

reunion. It’s our time and we are all in the Right State Of Mind.

We have 7 days to Vote for Change. 7 days to Vote to Make History. We

can not slow down. We can not let up. We must push through to history

until the final vote is cast and the last ballot is counted. We can, we

must, and we will Make It Happen. Vote Obama/Biden on November 4th.

God Bless,

Diddy

Really Danity Kane?

The views expressed in this column are not the views expressed by AllHipHop.com.Hello everyone! I’m baaack like the stubble on a chick’s Va Jay Jay between bikini waxes!  So I was at home spending a little QT with my number one fan. Me! I made myself dinner, got myself some beers, and most importantly I got myself some prescription drugs. (Vicodin, beaver tranquilizers, etc.) My television was on MTV. Did any of you catch the finale of Making The Band? As I drifted in and out of consciousness during the finale, and listened to everyone yap about how much they were like family even though Diddy gave Aubrey Ho’day and D.Woods the boot, I couldn’t help but think, Really Danity Kane? I must admit, when Diddy first put these five ladies together, I could not help but groan and roll my eyes. After all, the “band” he put together before them was filled with straight losers. There was Chopper, Tranny Babs, some Kardinal Offishal wanna be, and several other losers whose names I don’t remember. But like a wife’s fat misshapen body after giving birth…Danity Kane grew on me. Now I love them! But now it seems they kicked the most interesting members out of the group. WTF? Every group needs a w#### – either an attention w#### or a traditional one. Aubrey Ho’Day was a hybrid of both. And it made people pay attention to a group who is signed to the record label equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle. D.Woods was just along for the ride and we loved it! Who really gave a sh*t about the other three? Aundrea, you are cute and you can really sing and all but you are still kind of boring. Get an addiction then let’s talk.Dawn, you only got interesting this season when you started banging Que. And that’s only interesting because before you two started dating we thought Que was, well, you know… And lastly, Shannon, you are probably the most boring of the group. You need to drop your husband and start banging Donnie or Diddy if you haven’t already done so! Do it for your career!Even more annoying about the group’s split was Diddy’s proclamation that he was not the bad guy and that the real issue was with the group members of DK. Then when you heard the group members talk, they said the same BS we had heard all season. “We fight but at the end of the day we are still family.” Or “These are my sisters.” Well then what the f**k is the problem? Is it jealousy? There should not be because all of the women in Danity Kane are in the same life boat! None of these broads could ever be a solo artist. Sorry, Dawn! Wait, let me clarify. None of these women could ever be a solo artist unless they are banging Diddy on a REGULAR basis. That doesn’t mean you will have a hit record, it just means Diddy will keep pumping money into you among other things…Right Cassie? As much as I might hate to admit it, I might have to come to terms with the fact that Danity Kane may never be the same. So in this vein I have suggestions for new group members. What about Cassie? She’s cute and her solo career is virtually over and she adds intrigue to the group considering she is banging the boss on a consistent basis, not just on random, drunk, bored nights. Right Aubrey? So Cassie can’t really sing. Who cares, she’s in good with the boss and you girls can at least get one more album out of that until Diddy decides to try again with his baby moms…or Kim Porter. Another suggestion – what about DMX? He’s not really doing anything right now so I’m sure he would at least be open to the idea. So he might bark and bite your little girl fans. That’s fine; a couple of lawsuits never hurt any singing group.P.S. So I wrote all this like weeks ago. And in the past couple of days I have heard a variety of rumors. One of which is that Cassie actually might be joining Danity Kane. I guess sucking off the boss really does have its benefits. And I also now hear that Shannon is actually going to leave DK. Which one is that again?

El DeBarge Busted on Drug Charge

Former DeBarge frontman El DeBarge is serving time behind bars following an encounter with police in Los Angeles.

According to reports, the R&B crooner (born Patrick Eldra DeBarge) was charged with possession of a controlled substance after his arrest on Monday (October 27).

The incident marks another setback for DeBarge, who was arrested and jailed earlier this month after two warrants for his arrest were discovered by authorities.

The singer was charged with several offenses last year, including vandalism, drugs and domestic violence.

Prior to his legal troubles, El DeBarge emerged as a fixture on the ‘80s R&B scene as the lead singer of DeBarge.

The group – which was comprised of the vocalist’s brothers Mark , James and Randy and sister Bunny – were known for a string of pop and R&B hits that included “All This Love,” “Love Me in a Special Way” and “I Like It.”

As a solo artist, El DeBarge is best known for the 1985 hit “Rhythm of the Night,” which was a hit single taken from The Last Dragon soundtrack.

El Debarge is also known for his 1986 hit “Who’s Johnny” as well as “Secret Garden,” his 1990 collaboration with Quincy Jones, Barry White, Al B. Sure! and James Ingram.

Over the years, music from the crooner and the DeBarge family has been sampled by various rappers, which include the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur and AZ.

He has also worked with rappers like Warren G., DJ Quik and others.

El DeBarge is currently being held without bail.

He is due in court on today (October 28).

Jay-Z And Coldplay Get Mashed Up On ‘Viva La Hova’

The recent release of Coldplay’s “Lost” remix featuring Jay-Z has inspired a new project which crafts previously released material by both acts, into completely new material.

The project, titled Viva La Hova, is the brainchild of frequent collaborators Mick Boogie and Terry Urban.

The nineteen track mixtape will be available for download at midnight tonight at www.vivalahova.com.

“Jay and [Coldplay frontman] Chris [Martin] represent all that is right with modern music and art and have collaborated a few times in recent years to great results,” Mick Boogie told AllHipHop.com. “So why not extend that concept over an entire album? I thought when Danger Mouse did the Grey Album, it was just remarkable. And while I didn’t like every song on there, when it was on, it was absolutely some of the most amazing stuff I had heard. Same with the Jay-Z/Linkin Park project. So we tried to take a collaboration that was already organic and make it real and also extend that quality level throughout the entire project.”

In addition to landing their own talent as producers, Mick and Urban recruited the talents of progressive and up-and-coming producers who they felt best grasped the concept they were aiming for.

The beatsmiths, including 9th Wonder, The Amps, Cookin’ Soul, G####, The Kickdrums, and nVMe were each assigned samples and snippets of Coldplay songs from which to create new tracks.

The results where then painstakingly matched up with Jay-Z lyrics to create the finished songs “No Love “Hola Blanco,” a combination of Jay-Z’s “Hola Hovito” and Coldplay’s “White Shadows.”

“As we began piecing together the correct verses to match the correct beats, it became clear how truly amazing this project really is,” Mick Boogie boasted “This is what real music is supposed to sound like. The lyrical elegance of Shawn Carter, the vocal magic of Chris Martin, the finely tuned instruments of Coldplay, the creative visions by our team of producers, and lastly, our analysis of which Jay verse best fit each track. If you love Jay-Z and you’re not into Coldplay, this is for you. If you love Coldplay, but don’t mess with Hip-Hop, this is for you. If you love all good music, this is definitely for you. We hope this project bridges the gap between genres, fans, and generations.”

Mick Boogie and Terry Urban previously collaborated on similar mashup projects, including The Graduate, a combination of Kanye West lyrics and 9th Wonder beats.

Sneak(er) Peek: KG’s Goes Gold and LeBron’s Got More Kids…

Sneakers as far as the eye can see. But know this, it’s QUALITY not quantity people.  All you herbs with dozens of Dunks (usually the wack colors nobody wanted so you caught them on sale) thinking your shoe game is tight; wrong. The plethora of wack colorways and suspect re-issues you incessantly adorn your feet with only provide fodder for me and dozens of true sneaker connoisseurs to clown. Trust, the dude hitting them with say a crispy pair of neon green Air Max 95’s or fresh out the box Jordan 4’s is winning, while the cat with a pair of so rare they only made the right shoe in China and the left shoe in Brazil kicks in a display case because he’s too scared to even wear them needs a girlfriend. Seriously, that purple, orange and crimson color scheme on those kicks

that heads really weren’t feeling that tough back in ’89? Not hot, bro.

Step it up. Now let us move on…The Champ Is HereTomorrow

night is opening night of the 08/09 NBA season and is when KG gets that championship ring for bringing the chip back to Boston, at

Kobe and the Lakers’ expense. The good folks at Adidas and Kevin

Garnett are auctioning off a pair of his TS Commander Champions shoe (below). KG will be rocking them during the game while 17 pairs—Boston’s got 17 championships, get it?—will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Boston Celtic Shamrock Foundation. If you got the funds, you can log onto www.celticscom/shop tomorrow after the ceremony to start bidding. Speaking of green and gold Adidas, these limited edition Superstar Celtic kicks  (shell toes, for the uninitiated) will get attention. Also created for the NBA season opener, I suggest you say KG is your peoples and insisted that he give you a pair. Consider them a conversation starter. Only 500 of these were made and they will be available in the NBA store as well as Boston area retailers on November 1. Flashing LightsConverse is trying their damnedest to avoid also-ran status in the sneaker world. They got a boost, at least on the pro sports side, when they lured Elton Brand away from Nike this past summer and are good money so long as one Dwayne Wade is on the roster. Here is a “Same Day, Same Story” commercial starring Flash for his WADE 4 that starts airing soon (10/28/08)…You Can Get Wit’ Da KidSo you can’t talk NBA without bringing up King James. LeBron James’ latest signature shoe, the Zoom Lebron Six, dropped a special The LeBrons pack. The LeBrons are “Athlete LeBron” [left], “Business LeBron”, “Kid LeBron” [below] and “Wise LeBron”, made famous in this commercial right’chea…The best look in my biased opinion are the “Kid Lebron,” royal blue and white is a can’t miss. Ummm…Last month Adidas and Vibe got together for a shoe commemorating the latter’s 15 years in the game. Respect due.But yo, AllHipHop’s been here 10 years, nahmean! Can we get a shoe? I’m saying,  where’s the AHH love? Maybe a retro-fitted pair of Rod

Lavers in our good old colors of red and black? Just a thought…

ATF Foils Skinhead Plot To Assassinate Obama

AllHipHop has learned that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) have broken up a Tennessee plot to assassinate Presidential hopeful Barack Obama and maim or murder dozens of African-Americans in the Tennessee area

The plot, allegedly masterminded by two area skinheads, involved plans to rob a local gun store and target a majority-Black high school in Nashville, according to federal agents.

The Associated Press reports that Jim Cavanough, special agent and head of the Nashville ATF field office, said that the two skinheads planned to shoot 88 African-Americans and decapacitate 14 others; the numbers having some significance in white supremacist ideology.

Once their local carnage was complete, the two cohorts planned to take their mayhem national, culminating in the eventual assassination of Barack Obama.

According to Cavanaugh,”they said that would be their last, final act-that they would attempt to kill Senator Obama. They didn’t believe they would be able to do it, but they would get killed trying.”

Diddy Planning ‘Electro-Hip-Hop Soul’ Album

Mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is not among those who feel the Auto-Tune vocal effect has ran its course, and plans to showcase 2008’s biggest trend on his forthcoming album.

Although the album is in its early stages, Diddy disclosed that the Auto-Tune champion himself, T-Pain, worked with him on innovative ways to present the controversial music tool.

Adding to the melting pot, the Bad Boy founder is experimenting with elements of electro music popularized by Afrika Bambaataa and Cybotron in the early 80s.

“It’s electro Hip-Hop soul,” Diddy told InTouch Weekly about the unnamed project. “T-Pain gave me permission to use the vocoder, the Auto-Tune, and he showed me various tricks that nobody knows but him and myself.”

In reference to T-Pain’s own forthcoming November 11 release Thr33 Ringz, Diddy is confident the singer/songwriter will continue to maintain his stranglehold on the market.

“We had a great time in the studio. He’s definitely an up and coming genius,” he stated.

Since garnering massive hits for T-Pain over the last 2 years, the Auto-Tune has become a staple of mainstream Hip-Hop through other artists such as Lil Wayne (“Lollipop”), Kanye West (“Love Lockdown”), Snoop Dogg (“Sexual Seduction”), and G Unit (“Rider Pt. 2”).

That fact continues drive massive debate in the Hip-Hop community, with the trend inspiring both passionate advocates and detractors.

In addition to T-Pain, Diddy’s forthcoming third solo album will also feature production from Pharrell Williams, The Hitmen, and the Surf Club.

At press time, the album does not have a release date.

Lyfe Jennings : The 2nd Coming of 268-192

Honey, I’m home!

These

three words have filled the hearts of wives and kids

with joy for years; excluding those times, of course, when Daddy is

coming home intoxicated, and fresh off a “B####, I’m going to kill you”

text message. I’m curious though; if an drunken baby daddy comes through

while no one is home, does the ra-ta-tat-tat of the gun and splintering

of the kicked in front door really make a sound?

It does if the neighbors hear it.

Now

I don’t know Smyrna, GA all that well and I’m not going to hazard a

guess at how long it took the po po to show up when folks called this

melee of one in to 911, but I’m really confused as to why Mr.

Jennings was still in the area.  Was he going to get all Nino Brown on that ass and hold this apartment complex hostage until she came back?  Or did the flashing lights and sirens wake him from that Robert Blake fantasy he was having?

I guess his baby momma didn’t understand the lyfe he lived.  I guess she was fast to take and slow to give. At least he didn’t burn the complex down.

I kid, but I’m sure the irony of this situation isn’t lost on anyone. Do you recall the intro to the video for “Must Be Nice?”

CO One:  Nice guitar.  What you going to do now that you’re out?

268-192:  I’m going to do the Apollo in New York

CO Two: Heh.  You’ll be back.

I know we tend to think of fame and the couple of dollars that follow it as some sort of force field from lyfe’s ills.  We see these celebrated cats doing some real criminal ish and believe it beneath them.  We wonder how someone in that position could sink so low; not leave the past and the demons behind.  Looks to me like it aint that easy.

I mean Lyfe Jennings isn’t Akon.  He

didn’t build a crime riddled back story around a jay-walking ticket (or

whatever minimal infraction that got Akon those 6 ½ minutes behind

bars).  He had some serious issues; enough to

require over a decade in the pokey for arson. I can’t imagine the toll

that takes on an already broken psyche.  I also don’t know how one fixes that broken psyche.  It’s

very romantic to think the music can soothe a soul interrupted, but we

see time and time again that no matter the accolades, no matter the

amount of the contract, no matter the size of the house or the wheels

on the car, there are some of our folks who can’t get past the pain.

Mr. Jennings is looking at some severe charges.  Not

only did he break into this house; he discharged a firearm, eluded the

coppers, crashed his car, refused the sobriety test and has had a

really sad statement in the form of a restraining order filed against

him by the target of his meltdown.

That’s not nice.

So the future is looking a little bleak for Mr. Jennings.  The

dude we were all rooting for, the guy who we just knew had gotten it

together; didn’t. It appears CO #2 foreshadowed the downfall of

R&B’s favorite Phoenix. This of course leads me to believe that Mr.

Jennings was doing some foretelling of his own when he went with that

idea for the title of his 2nd album.

The mythical phoenix is known as a symbol of the comeback.  However, as plenty of folks stop the creation of the 2nd chance, many don’t know the full tragic cycle.  The

phoenix as it is reborn is already doomed to its fiery death. The bird

goes down in this blaze of glory by its own hand over and over and over

again.  This cycle for the fire bird lasts hundreds of years, though.  I guess Mr. Jennings’ sequence is just a bit shorter.

Only time will tell what’s going to happen with this case.  The

firearm in itself is enough to put him back behind bars for a while. I

guess the music wasn’t enough to dismiss the darkness and it would be

nice if he learned from this mistake because it doesn’t look like he

learned much from his first.

AHH Stray News: Eminem Release Date Confirmed

Eminem’s highly-anticipated sixth solo album, Relapse, will be released on December 23, according to Amazon.com. While concrete details about the album are shrouded in mystery, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, 50 Cent, and T.I. are among those confirmed to have worked with the Detroit star. Already starting to make media rounds, Eminem’s new LP will mark his first studio album in 4 years, and will debut during the biggest shopping week of the year.

Tour Log: Res Live In Atlanta

In the wake of the seven-year gap between her refreshing debut and a 2008 Myspace-only sophomore album, demure singer Res has managed to stay afloat by becoming a road warrior. The consistent shows not only keep her visible, but allow curious fans like myself the chance to hear what she possibly has in store for the next album.Last week, Res made her second Atlanta appearance in 14 months, and faced the uphill challenge of trying to work around a band that was not well acquainted with her material. The headline set started with a song with Res doing a surprise rendition of Stevie Nick’s 1981 classic “Edge of Seventeen.” Here Res pushed her voice from its normally airy phrasing to a strong, crisp pitch that did not falter under the track’s fevered guitar riffs.Even though the venue had supplied plush throw couches to set a relaxing, “quiet storm” ambiance, the crowd rose in unison to groove and meet the energy of Res’ vocals and passion. Unfortunately, the remaining performances were inconsistent due to various miscues and mistakes between Res and the band. Like many brave musicians who pursue music full time, Res on many occasions has to perform with fellow musicians she may have had little or no time to rehearse with. And on this night it showed. Her biggest hit “They Say Vision” suffered from uninspired and uneven playing, and Res struggled to keep her vocals in step with their rhythms. At one point, Res even stopped the show to have an impromptu meeting to discuss what the problem was. You can bet pleasantries weren’t exchanged, and that didn’t even resolve the issue as the bandleader would keep whispering in Res’ ear as she tried to sing, prompting the annoyed Philly native to retort into the mic “I came to sing, not talk.”The smart, mostly 25 and up crowd remained respectful, as we all have off days on the job, but we still cringed on cue when the band butchered the opening of Res’ other big hit “Golden Boys.” These missteps clearly rattled Res, who normally in her performances becomes more outgoing and comfortable once she gets into a rhythm. And while other artists like Amel Larrieux and Lina are adept at improvising through mistakes and taking control of a wayward backing band, these skills are not Res’ strengths.Even so, with concerts most of us remember not how you started, but how you end. And thankfully, Res and the band finally hit a stride with the closing number “Ice King.” The slow, rock-tinged ballad allowed Res to showcase her vulnerability by achingly crooning over a doomed romance with a star-crossed lover. Now, the couches and low lights served their ultimate purpose in giving the couples in the house the opportunity to cuddle, kiss, and do anything else they could legally get away with.Res’ Atlanta 2008 concert fell way short of her memorable 2007 set, but the former still highlighted enough of Res’ talent that everyone stayed and willed her through it with words of encouragement and applause. For an artist having an off night, you couldn’t ask for anything better from your fans.

T.I. ‘Walking With Guns’ In New Doc; Remixes NBC Peacock Theme

Hip-Hop star T.I. has been tapped by NBC to remix the network’s famous 75-year-old “Peacock” Chimes, as part of the ongoing “Chime In” campaign.

The rapper joins the likes of the B-52’s, who have created a dance styled take on the chimes and B.B. King, who plays the notes on his guitar.

Other artists participating in the campaign are Clint Black, Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora and the Airborne Toxic Event.

Each one of the spots will air at the top and bottom of the hour, according to representatives for CNN, who added that the network is attempting to make their commercial breaks more “entertaining.”

In related news, T.I. is the star of a new upcoming TV documentary titled Walking With Guns, which premiered yesterday in Atlanta.

The hour-long film, which was produced by former United Nations ambassador and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew young, focuses on T.I.’s recent conviction for attempting to purchase unregistered machine guns and silencers in March.

The documentary follows the rapper as he visits hospitals and meets with the victims of gang violence, as well as his recent excursions around the country to speak about the danger associated with possessing guns.

Walking With Guns, part of the Andrew Young Presents: series, is slated to air around the country starting November 1.

T.I. will begin serving a one-year sentence in federal prison in March of 2009, after he pleaded guilty to illegal weapons possession.

Tale Of The Tape: New Tapes From Russell Simmons, G. Dep, and Rapper Big Pooh

Once again it’s on. Tale of the Tape is back to give you some direction on the mixtape game as we know it. This week gives us music from some interesting artists who have dropped from the radar from some time.  Heads may remember Roscoe P. Coldchain as the masked up microphone bully accompanying The Clipse on “Cot Damn”. Now over five years later he drops There Will Be Blood.

Another special delivery comes courtesy of G. Dep. The once Bay Boy star is now independent, and is back with the first release on his campaign back to fame, The Hiatus: Deponomics Vol. 1.

Finishing the week is one half of Little Brother, Rapper Big Pooh, with Rapper’s Delight. Baller Ron Artest teams up with his group Worldwide Warriors and DJ Drama on The King Of Queens. Last but not least, DJ Green Lantern and Russell Simmons put together the presidentially powered Yes We Can. Let’s get into it.

Yes We Can

DJ Green Lantern & Russell Simmons

Heavy Rotation

This is an important year for all of us. On the cusp of the presidential election, DJ Green Lantern and Russell Simmons have gotten together and crafted a great mixtape. From its introduction featuring Barack Obama, Yes We Can makes a statement. With artists ranging from Kanye West who joins Malik Yusef on “ Promised Land”, David Banner, Busta Rhymes, and Talib Kweli joining forces on “Black”, and Joe Budden ,Twista and John Mayer with “Waiting On The World To Change 2008”, Yes We Can shows true depth and really marks just how important the election is. Go vote November 4th.

Rapper’s Delight

Rapper Big Pooh

Peep It

Rapper Big Pooh deserves your respect. The North Carolina MC has always played the background to most as the other half of the critically acclaimed group Little Brother. With Rapper’s Delight, he showcases his lyrically dexterity, and gives the people an idea of what to expect on a solo offering.  “Plastic Cups” is the cream of the crop, as Pooh works a J Dilla beat alongside associates Chaundon and  Joe Scudda. The only knock here would be the lack of solo work. Rapper’s Delight can feel more like a compilation than a individual artist mixtape as there are only two selections where Pooh has the spotlight directly on him (“Crazy”, “Dumb It Down”). However, there isn’t a lack of good music. With him helming the mixtapes like this, he won’t be underrated for long.

The King Of Queens

DJ Drama & Ron Artest

Drop It

Sometimes cosigns can make you wonder.  DJ Drama usually delivers quality tapes; the quality that earned the title of “iPod king”. With The King Of Queens, he delivers a hot dud. Ron Artest isn’t as horrific on the microphone as many think, but the basketball star doesn’t come with anything worth three minutes of your time. His group Worldwide Warriors is in the same boat. Tracks such as “Nasty North” and “Exposure” deliver plenty of evidence. Even an assist from DJ Kay Slay and Juvenile on “Cash Money” can’t help this disc’s fate from being a drink coaster. This is the type of mixtape you would expect to hear from some artist down the street, not one of the best DJ’s in the game and a starter from the NBA. Avoid this one.

There Will Be Blood

Roscoe P. Coldchain

Heavy Rotation

Where did Roscoe go? After murdering verses on the Clipse’s Lord Willin and The Neptunes Clones compilation, he was a ghost. There Will Be Blood is a great reminder of why you were waiting for an album on this guy. His signature gritty flow on “Victory” sets the tone for the rest of the disc. He works the Isley Brothers’ sample on “Summer Breeze” and also retools the classic “Deep Cover”. The punch lines and metaphors change, but the theme remains the same. Roscoe is back. Hopefully, he stays around a bit longer this time.

The Hiatus: Deponomics Vol. 1

G. Dep

Heavy Rotation

Remember G. Dep? The once burgeoning Harlem emcee fell off the radar after a string of bad luck. He has returned, and with The Hiatus: Deponomics Vol. 1, it’s apparent he hasn’t lost a step. Fans only need to listen to a couple tracks to get warm back up to Dep. “Another Day” tells a sordid tale of the street wrapped around gritty production while “Straight From The Block” is anchored by a more unhurried flow. On the flipside, “Dem Struggle” ends the mixtape on triumphant horns featuring a rapid fire G. Dep ushering the listener to run this back.  He may find a few more students of Deponomics with this effort.

BREAKING NEWS: Jennifer Hudson’s Nephew’s Body Found

Chicago police have confirmed that they have found the body of a child that is the same age and race as Jennifer Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

According to sources, the body was found inside of the white Chevy Suburban that police were seeking, which was owned by Hudson’s murdered brother, Jason Hudson.

The vehicle was discovered at 1313 S. Kolin Ave. in the Lawndale section of Chicago by police.

At press time, the medical examiner has not made a positive ID on the body.

Over the weekend, Hudson and her family offered a $100,000 reward for the 7-year-old’s safe return.

News of the body is latest chapter to unfold in the aftermath of the shooting deaths of Hudson’s 57-year-old mother Darnell Donerson and 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson.

The pair were found dead Friday (October 24) in their South Side Chicago home.

That same day, the entertainer’s nephew, Julian, turned up missing.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for Julian King and asked people to look out for a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859.

The Suburban was found a few miles from the scene of the crime, according to reports.

Julian is the son of Hudson’s sister, Julia.

According to media sources, the Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed that Hudson identified her mother and brother’s bodies yesterday.

Authorities have taken one person in to custody regarding the case.

William Balfour, the estranged husband of Julia Hudson, is known as a “person of interest” in what has been described as a “double homicide investigation.”

He has not been charged in the crime and has denied involvement in the killings, although he has stopped cooperating with police conducting the investigation.

At this time, police do not have a motive for the slayings, which they label as “domestic related.”

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama his expressed his condolences via a statement issued over the weekend.

“Michelle and I were absolutely heartbroken to learn about this unimaginable tragedy and we want Jennifer to know that she is in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” Obama said Saturday (October 25).

Kool Keith: Dooom Seeker

The rap game is notorious for the short shelf life of its artists. Many of the MCs who packed stadiums in the 90’s, or early 2000’s, have either been labeled irrelevant or have simply disappeared from view altogether.Hip-Hop mainstays like De La Soul and LL Cool J are respected not only because of their skill, but because people still look forward to their albums decades in the game. The number of rappers in that group is small, but with a little more than 20 years in the game “Kool” Keith Thornton has earned his spot in that circle. Kool Keith has been able to maintain a healthy catalogue by giving his loyal fan base the unexpected. From his trendsetting work with Ultramagnetic MCs, to his solo rap work and more experimental albums Kool Keith’s main theme has been change: “I just switch up,” says Keith. “I make my life interesting and come up with different music, different images… The fans are interested in my evolving changes… They didn’t just hear me talk about one particular subject all my life. They didn’t hear me everyday rapping about champagne and cars or rapping about girls all the time. They heard other sides of my [creativity], my talent.”Ultamagnetc MCs “Raise It Up” Video

Over the years that creativity has turned into a page full of aliases, costumes and spaced out album covers. Kool Keith has donned a plastic wig to rap as Black Elvis (1999), got creepy as Dr. Octagon (1996), got lyrical in The Best Kept Secret (2007), and on his new album, Dr. Dooom 2 via Threshold Recordings, he gets grimy. Working behind the boards with DJ KutMasta Kurt, the album is an intro to first time listeners but manages to give fans in his own words, “That funky dark horror s**t,” as well as the eccentric beats and off-the-wall rhymes they expect from the veteran. While the music is in line with his usual aesthetic, Keith is quick to point out that part of that signature is its ability to fluctuate. “A lot of rappers from my time ain’t really doing s**t cause they stuck at what they did in 19 whatever,” he explains. “They just stuck. I had different ways of doing things. Me being me, and changing, opened up new doors. Me being flexible got me on a lot of other projects that were very successful without even being in the rap circle. [Projects] that were really big and prosperous, and that were quite interesting.”  “I have flexibility,” he continues. “I have dimension to my writing skills. [Others] are stuck. They gotta come out either one way or another. If they don’t come out that same way they done. Talking bout I got rims. I got this, I got that… They stuck.”  Kool Keith/Dr. Dooom “RIP Dr. Octagon” VideoThat ability to shift gears and create different music got him working not only with DJ KutMasta Kurt but also Ice-T on Analog Brothers (2000). “I rapped on Prodigy’s ‘Smack My B#### Up,’” adds Keith. “Diesel Power sold 3 million records. I’ve been on a lot of projects. I’ve been on Africa Bambaataa mixes. Ended up working with groups that people thought would never really deal with me. I’ve done it all.”  Kool Keith has a history in the game, and has worked on a number of different projects (many with UK artists who still admire the music of The Ultramagetic MCs and Kool Keith) but understands his place in the Hip-Hop time line. “A lot people had records out way ahead of me. I used to see [Grandmaster] Flash perform and see them in the Roxy, and I wasn’t even making records. Scorpio and everyone, so those guys had records out years before [me]. I was still coming into a new generation of rap. My time didn’t even start until around ’89 like Rakim. That’s not even the old school time. Old school had its time pass behind the Fresh Fest. I wasn’t even on that stuff. It kills me when people say old school. I wasn’t even in that time zone.” Ultamagnetic MCs “Poppa Large” Video”When I came out I set a new tone,” continues Poppa Large. “I was on some futuristic space music. To this time and day. I’m spaced out now. I was ‘Star Treked’ when I came out. So my s**t was always advanced. People used to say, ‘What is he saying? He just says weird stuff.’ But now I’m glad. You got a person like Lil’ Wayne. He’s space now.”In talking about his placement in the Old School vs. New School spectrum Kool Keith says, “A lot of rappers from my time don’t really like the new rappers. They feel like It’s like only a few can really hang. But there are only a few rappers from a certain time, my time, that can hang with the young rappers. I think my style is adjustable to the time. There are only a few rappers from 80 something that can rap with the new guys right now. A rapper from my time being here is great cause your cadence did not deteriorate. You don’t rap off the beat or still rap like, ‘Yes yes ya’ll. Come on now! Gotta give it to the people’” Honestly you can’t do that Kurtis Blow. He was the man, but times change. That’s how I look at rap. I’m the equivalent to Allen Iverson. He’s been in the league for a few but he’s good. He can still get through and penetrate, still good on defense.”  Fans of Kool Ketih have been waiting for this sequel to the original Dr. Dooom (1999) and it promises to not disappoint. The all-original beats (Kool Keith doesn’t sample) still create that dark mood, and his crazy wordplay is still on point. Not dwelling on his years in the game, his eyes are still focused on the next thing, the next sound, and the next idea that will open the ears of Hip-Hop heads looking for something new.Kool Keith “Plastic World” Video

Jennifer and Julia Hudson Release Statements Regarding Their Tragedy

Singer Jennifer Hudson spoke out this morning (Oct 26), addressing her fans

for the first time since the gruesome discovery on Friday (Oct 24) of the bodies of their

mother and brother at the South Side Chicago home where she grew

up.Speaking via a blog on her MySpace page, the Academy Award winning

actress thanked fans for their concern and asked for their continued

support.“Please keep praying for our family and that we get Julian

King back home safely,” Hudson wrote. “If anyone has any information about

his whereabouts please contact the authorities immediately. Once again thank

you all for being there for us through this tough time.”Her

statement came one day after her sister Julia Hudson, the boy’s mother,

issued an emotional plea for the child’s safe return, joined by Julian’s

father Greg King.“All I ask, I don’t care who you are, just let the baby

go. Please,” Julia said during a press conference held at the Pleasant

Gift Missionary Baptist Church. “My biggest fear has already happened.

My greatest hope is finding my child. I have to believe he is ok. My

family is a God-fearing family. That’s why we are here today.”“I just

want my son,” continued Julia Hudson, whose estranged ex-husband was

named in the Amber Alert issued for Julian Friday. “That’s all I have to

say. Please let my baby go. He didn’t do nothing to nobody. He don’t deserve

this. I know he’s out there. Just let him go.”Chicago authorities

have brought in the FBI to assist them as they continue to search for

Julian, who has not been seen in nearly 48 hours. His mother explained that

she last saw him Thursday night, as the family gathered to celebrate her

31st birthday. She then took the boy back to the home on S. Yale Avenue,

where she lived with her mother Darnell Donerson and brother Jason Hudson,

the two victims of Friday’s tragic events. The Chicago Police

Department explains that the FBI’s involvement is to investigate the

possibility that Julian has been taken across state lines, which would make

his kidnapping a federal offense.“We’re doing that as a precautionary

measure,” explained Chicago PD superintendent Jody Weis. “From what we know

right now, it appears to be some type of domestic situation, but that’s very

preliminary. We just have to follow the evidence.”At this time, no

one has been charged in connection to the deaths of Mrs. Donnerson and her

son, despite the coroner’s ruling of both deaths as

homicides.William Balfour, who in Friday’s Amber Alert was listed as a suspect in a “double homicide investigation,” was transferred to the

Illinois Department of Corrections today “based on his active parole

violation unrelated to this investigation,” according to police

spokeswoman Monique Bond.Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith added

that Balfour, who is still considered a “person of interest,” would likely

remain in state custody until his case was examined by the Illinois Prisoner

Review Board. At this time, an active investigation continues around the

Hudson family home. While authorities intend to conduct a citywide

search for Julian, today the effort has been focused “in the immediate

vicinity” of the Englewood section of Chicago where Hudson grew up, with

neighbors joining the search.“There’s a lot of forensic evidence,” Bond

said. “We have to work the evidence and try and solve this case. Most

importantly, we want to find the child.”
