TODAY’S RUMORS!

HEY! THANKS, DUDE!

This idiot got on the rumors page and thought it was the AHH news page or something! He was all pissified, because there was a rumor that “Swagger Like Us” wasn’t going to be on the T.I. album Paper Trail. Anyway, dude was so mad that he went and did some running around and verified some facts for me. What did he verify? He verified that “Swagger Like Us” will indeed be on T.I.’s CD and Jay-Z didn’t get it for himself. Thanks, dude, for being so on top of things. So, Amazon’s tracklisting was wrong and the fact that iTunes has it listed as Jay-Z’s song is also my fault. LOL. Atlantic has issued a corrective statement that Pee Head got before I did. I was out enjoying my Thursday. Thanks, kiko mon, for clearing that up.

BUSTA…NOT QUITE…

I have been informed that Busta’s signing is inevitable, but nothing has been signed yet. From what I understand he will be heading over to Universal Motown when they hammer out the paperwork. I’ll be waiting on my end!

DEVILS AT WORK…

The Chairman of the Republican Party of Michigan said that party members will be at the poles with lists of foreclosed homes, to block people from voting because they don’t live at the addresses they registered, due to foreclosure.

There are a number of places in your local area to get you an address in your area. I recommend you check around, but a church, a PO box, a friend’s address and other places are ways to keep your vote. You can also – from what I understand – vote by absentee ballot. Make it happen…don’t let them steal your vote or others.

YUNG BERG BREAKS HIS SILENCE!

Yeah, Yung Boss! I’m an Old Boss, but no hate to Bergie. He’s a young’un in the game and you live and you learn.

JUMPING OFF A BRIDGE FOR PLIES!

This girl actually won being Plies No. 1 fan! Damn…shout out to Plies on getting Nonnie Thickie as his numero uno! She actually jumped off a bridge for this…I hope it was worth it.

I don’t know, but this is close to a “sign the world is coming to an end.” Girl, cut that mess out!

PINHEADS! Oh, these dough heads are the worst!

SHELZ’S ARBITRARY MOMENTS!

Kay Slay Swag Jackin’ Khaled?

Kay Slay is raw as usual. Mad because some folk suggested he’s a Khaled swag-jack specialist. Funny; but if he has to look at his own CD’s to remind himself of what he’s done, why does he expect us to remember it? Oh and if you are 21, he might be your daddy.

The cut in question follows. I’m not really feeling a Khaled vibe here; maybe because I’m not listening to 4 minutes of incessant screaming.

Another Way to Die…

So the theme song from the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, with Jack White from The White Stripes and Alicia Keys was released. It’s very … well… James Bond-ish. The track is all epic and dramatic but the vocals, ehhh… not so much. And there is something about that chorus that seems unfinished to me. I wonder if Crackhouse is going to live up to her end of the bargain and release something way better in retaliation for not getting the job. I’ll be honest. She might have a shot. That’s if she hasn’t smoked away the brain cells that would allow her to remember this situation in the first place.

Another Book with a Long Ass Title?

My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem: Setting the Record Straight on My Life As Eminem’s Mother is coming out sometime in November I think and is going to give her side of all those horrible Mommy Dearest lyrics. I can’t say I’ve seen a comment from Mr. Mathers regarding this. We probably won’t.

Salt and Pepa are Bringing it to the Big Screen

They think a lot of people would go to see their group biography. I’m not sure about that, but I honestly didn’t think anyone would be interested in Peps book either, so what do I know? Pep says if this project grows wings, she is wanting Meagan Good to play her character. She says Meagan reminds her of herself when she was younger. Ummm… I’m not really sure in what regard she is talking about, so I will save my snide ass comment.

p.s… Per MTV, Atlantic Records has confirmed that Swagga Like Us will be on Paper Trail.

p.p.s…This. Just because it’s Friday and I swear the rest of the people on that stage are probably still looking for ole dude. It didn’t even look like he fell. It looked like he was sucked into some sort of bad dancer black hole.

I’m feeling real Johnny Kemp right about now…..minus the braids. Lata Peeps!

LADY DRAMA BRINGS IT HOME!

Funk Flex Says what we all were thinking about R.Kelly….

Well its about time somebody said it! Just glad it wasn’t me and I can still save my J-O-B!

Diddy as way too much time on his hands!

After feeling sour about not getting on the ‘Swagger Like Us’ record Puff decided to do his own version and make a video! What a _______!

The AllHipHop Social Lounge Wrap up….

I had the pleasure of attending the kick off event of All hip hop Week the Social Lounge which took place at Newark’s NJPAC! Aside from the great panelist which included Michael Eric Dyson, Q-Tip, Michaela Davis, and Killer Mike the content was amazing. With such a With such a huge election coming up it was no wonder that the discussion never had a dull moment, but adding to the flavor in my opinion was Killer Mikes commentary in which he called out ‘dumb rappers’ who fail to use resources to draw people into politics all the way to his strategic plan on how to register young voters by going out to club let outs with voters cards and registration forms! All in all it was a great event that gave insight on issues within our communities that we all ponder about day after day! So kudos to the Ahh staff for another good one! Didn’t get to peep the Camp Lo performance but my people tell me it was bananas 😉 Would you expect anything less?

Friday Eye Candy is back…

Redman: The Funk Doc Rocks Atlanta

Quick, name the most consistent MC of the 90’s. Giants like Nas, Jay-Z, and Scarface might first come to mind, but you’d be as equally accurate in giving that distinction to Brick City lyricist Reggie Noble. Throughout that decade, the Funk Doc not only gave the Hip-Hop world classics like Whut? Thee Album and Muddy Waters, but also laid the blueprint for comical albeit highly technically skilled successors in Eminem and Ludacris.

And now well into the new millennium, Redman has not lost a step, as evidenced by a rare and free post 1AM appearance at The Loft in Atlanta. The event was sponsored by Scion, as part of their popular concert series pairing a Hip-Hop legend with a band for live renditions from the MC’s discography.

The Funk Doc had no issues with the improvisational nature of live instrumentation music, as he ripped through melody heaving tracks like “How To Roll A Blunt” and “Tonight’s Da Night.” After an obligatory rant railing against mainstream Hip-Hop, Red went into several rapid-fire, Bone-esque freestyles that awed the crowd. Showing exceptional crowd control, Redman would feign quitting after each sixteen bars; admonishing the crowd that they “weren’t ready” as they clamored for another dose of Reggie’s high-powered cosmic slop.

Later hits from Red’s catalogue were also represented, with the Newark MC showcasing the tongue-in-cheek “I’ll Bee Dat” and the wild-out anthem “Da Goodness.” The former had the audience at their raunchy best as Red led call and response chants of “f*** you Redman,” while the latter track found new life through the band’s rollicking guitar phrasings of the sample.

Unfortunately, the limitations of the band prevented Redman from performing some of the more creative outputs from his catalogue such as “Can’t Wait,” “Rockafella,” and the “Sooperman Luva” series.

“Nah, that Dare Iz A Darkside is too wild for these n****s,” Redman joked to fans calling for songs from his sophomore psychedelic trip. “You’ll have the band up here f***ing up all night!”

Despite this, Redman could do no wrong among this smart crowd. Ending with his verse from the Def Squad “Rapper’s Delight,” Reggie Noble once again displayed that he’s not only Jersey’s greatest MC, but also one of the best in Hip-Hop history.

Nelly: The AllHipHop Interview

In the four years since his last studio release Cornell Haynes Jr., better known as Nelly, had dipped somewhat under the radar. Many obviously expected another album, although few were quite sure when they could expect it.  Then in 2007 he appeared on tracks for R. Kelly’s Double Up and T.I’s T.I VS. T.I.P. These guest appearances were followed by another on the song “Switch” by his rumored girlfriend of some time, Ashanti. After several false starts which included the release of songs which were not intended to be singles and a release date which seemed to have a hard time sticking, fans everywhere can rejoice as Brass Knuckles is finally here.To say that Nelly had been completely quiet since the release of 2004’s Sweat/Suit would be inaccurate. While he may not have been creating music all the time he was definitely creating controversy and tabloid buzz. Controversy for his spat with Spelman College over his video for “Tip Drill” and his subsequent desire to visit the college in efforts to find a bone marrow donor for his then ailing sister. Tabloid buzz for his long rumored relationship with Ashanti, which neither side has ever officially confirmed, though they have been seen out together and photographed countless times. Yes, in conjunction with his newest release there was a lot to talk about. And fortunately, Nelly definitely had a lot to say.AllHipHop.com: It’s been awhile since we saw you as an artist. What have you been up to in the interim?Nelly: The last album came out to 2004 and then four years from that 2008. I’ve been through a lot. I’ve been through a lot personally as well as business. Personally I went through the most I’ve ever been through in my life. I lost my sister in ’05. That was like the worst thing that ever happened to me, period. It was my first time really losing someone that close to me. I lost an uncle earlier when I was like nine but you know you’re nine. It hurts but sometimes you get over things faster. But when you get older and you’ve known someone basically over thirty years and its like boom all of a sudden they’re not there with you anymore it crazy. So it take me a little longer to get my mind right, to get a lot of things focused back on what I was doing. And business wise, a little bit of everything. We just celebrated our fifth anniversary with Apple Bottoms. I want to thank everybody for making that as successful as it is. And my realty company, I have a lot of things developing in downtown St. Louis. I previously purchased a little city block downtown. I have sports bar, it’s called Sky Box. I grew up playing sports. Sports have been my whole life. And I mean we’re not 40/40 (laughs) but like 20/20. But it’s a hot spot in St. Louis. I’m also working on putting a boutique hotel above it. I’m always working. I’m always doing songs. I’m always in the studio at some point. It’s not like I just jumped into working on this album cause  I’ve always been doing it. But it’s like once I pick the focus for the album and where I want things to go then I can start gearing the songs and gearing the music more towards that focus. AllHipHop.com: You mentioned some of the things that you have been through within the last couple of years. That being said can we expect something different from you on your new album?Nelly: Every time I’ve come out with an album it’s been pretty much different than the last one. Country Grammar was the first and Nellyville was definitely different than Country Grammar. Sweat/Suit was different than both of them. And now this is my 5th album. My fourth drop date! (laughs) And its definitely different from anything else you have basically heard and the title of the album is Brass Knuckles.  It describes just how hard the album will hit. It’s real aggressive. It’s real uptempo. A lot of energy in the music. When I did Country Grammar, even though I can’t do Country Grammar again, it had a lot of uptempos, a lot of energy in the tracks, a lot of energy in the music. And when you did hear songs that were more melodic they kind of stood out so to speak. And then when I started doing Nellyville I started getting more melodic and Sweat/Suit I just did a whole album full. (laughs) But now it’s just a lot of energy and when you do hear the melodic songs they stand out a little more. And now I’m working with a lot more people.Nelly “Stepped On My J’z” VIDEOAllHipHop.com: And who are some of the people you worked with on this album?Nelly: Some of the people I worked with on this album um.. I have a song called “Hold Up” featuring myself T.I and LL Cool J. I got a song called “LA” featuring Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg. I got a song called “Let it Go (Lil Mama)” produced by the Neptunes and that’s also featuring my man Pharrell Williams on the hook. “Stepped on My J’z” featuring my girl Ciara and produced by my man JD…I know people are saying “Nelly, another shoe song?” but it’s not like that. I may do nine or ten shoe songs before it’s all done, it’s just about embodying that moment and time and what J’s meant to me. I feel real privileged that fans allowed me to do songs like “Air Force Ones” and “Grillz” that may be about something like that but were still able to become number one songs out of them. It’s like how many love songs can you do? How many angry songs can you do? You know, you do songs to do songs. Just as long as they hot, just keep reppin! And I come from that Jordan Era. I come where if the new Jordans came out you had to have them. You skipped school to get them. You didn’t want to go that weekend and not have them and have other people stuntin’ on you. I also have a collaboration on there with the legendary Chuck D. It’s called “Self Esteem”. It’s one of my all time favorite collaborations. I feel real honored that Chuck did it too. Cause when I asked Chuck to do it he didn’t even hear what it was or know what it was and he was like, “It’s done”. I was like, “I got this idea…” and he was like “Lil brother, its done.” I was like whoa cause it really meant a lot to me that he had that much faith in me knowing that I wouldn’t do anything that he wouldn’t want to do. Chuck D is trusting me, the party guy, to come up with a song that both of us is going to appreciate? And when I sent it to him he was like you were right. And I feel real honored because he laced me too. He killed it!

“Instead of sisters working with a brother to help educate our people on Leukemia, on bone marrow, and getting people signed up on the stem cell registry and try to help save lives you want to talk about a video. A video.”

AllHipHop.com: Who is Nelly today and how is he different from the man we met all those years ago?Nelly: It’s been almost ten years. It’s been nine definitely. A lot of things change in 9-10 years. It’s brothers getting out of jail for murder. (laughs) Obviously, you can tell the growth. You have no choice but to do that. Life embodies it. Evolution at some point is going to happen. I just think I see a lot of things differently now as opposed to when I first started. I see how the game has definitely changed. When I came out the Internet wasn’t even a thought as far as being what it is to music right now.  They were talking about it and the record companies said go on there’s no way people are not going to stop going to stores and stop trying to buy records. Whoo! Were they wrong! I wish they would have struck that deal now. But they didn’t and here we are and obviously that changed. I don’t think fans are really buying into artists anymore. They are buying songs. They are accepting songs from people but they are not buying into artists. I think they are missing that experience. When an artist used to come out on a Tuesday you would go to the record store, you would stand in line. You had that feeling. You wanted to get the artwork and look on the back and see the thank yous. You wanted to see who produced this track and now you don’t get that. And now it’s just like you can walk down the street and a new album comes out and you don’t even break stride, you just order it. It’s that much tougher to be a legitimate artist these days You have to put in the effort to show people that you have more than one, two, or even three songs on an album if you are not a part of that crew that has already solidified quote unquote a certain type of a fan base for themselves.AllHipHop.com: Do you feel like you have impacted the music industry in anyway? If so, how?Nelly: You know what, we get this question and I don’t want to sound like that but, hell yeah! I think whether you like me or or you don’t like me, I still think what me and the St. Lunatics did is one of the most underrated things as far as contributing to music. Period. Hands down. When we came there was the energy from us. I’m not saying that because there were other groups that had energy. You look at the Lost Boyz, they had a lot of energy in what they did. Wu-Tang, they had a lot of energy in what they did. But we took it from another level of representing where you from as a whole. Lost Boyz and Wu-Tang as a group they are from New York. We’ve heard of these places before. And also just bringing that colorful vibe. Like when we broke in it was all about the colors, the double head bands, and the du-rag on the headband. We did this s**t on purpose. Like the headband over the hat. Yo we came here with all that! Even when it came to the music “Ride Wit Me” was one of the first rap songs to ever have a bridge. We were some of the first rappers to sing and rap their own hooks. Now that’s not excluding Bone Thugs, obviously they did it. But we did on a level where people understood us more. When Bone did it, which is one of my all time favorite groups, it was more of a type of flow that embodied… you might have  to rewind that three of four times times just to get the first line. (laughs) (raps a line from a Bone Thugs song) Even when you look at the crews dancing and not being afraid to just let it hang out. It was like this is what we are going to. This is what we don’t see. This is what people aren’t doing. I mean obviously everybody takes something from everybody else. I mean obviously we weren’t the first ones to wear throwbacks, but we put it on blast with an infectious appeal but its one of those things. I do it for the representation of just letting people know St. Louis is here. We got talent. Nelly f/ Fergie “Party People” VideoAllHipHop.com: Last year The Oprah Winfrey Show had an episode where she talked to a few members of the Hip-Hop community as well as some women from Spelman College. One of the topics that came up was the controversy that surrounded the bone marrow drive you wanted to do at Spelman College. Did you see the episode that I’m referring to?Nelly: No, but I did hear about it.AllHipHop.com: Do you have any thoughts on everything now that you are some years removed from what happened?Nelly: I had thoughts on it when it happened. I thought it was pure ignorance. It was hypocritical. People are always saying they want Black men to things that are beneficial for the community and for people as a whole but when he does that and he’s coming to do that you want to picket him. Here I am, I’m coming down there to talk about bone marrow. I’m coming down there to talk about saving lives. I’m here to talk about something in our community that we as a whole haven’t really gotten a grasp on yet; and that’s healthcare. Black people, we just don’t go to the hospital. We get a stomach ache and we’re like it’s just a stomach ache. But no, that could be his appendix!  That could have been something that [ruptured] in him! But we are not going to the hospital because we are scared of that $200 or $300 bill we are going to get that we know we can’t afford.  So if you don’t have anything broken or anything bleeding it’s like we are not going to the hospital. Instead of sisters working with a brother to help educate our people on Leukemia, on bone marrow, and getting people signed up on the stem cell registry and try to help save lives you want to talk about a video. A video.  A video that had all adults in it, that these adults agreed to do for themselves. These were grown women. As a matter of fact some of these women are no more than ten blocks from where you (the women of Spelman) go to school at. It’s a club right down there. Why don’t you go down there and boycott? Why didn’t you go down there and picket? And this came at a time when I was trying to find a donor (bone marrow) for my sister. And I feel like I was robbed of that opportunity. I had a one in something million chance of finding a donor for my sister and I was robbed of one of those chances unfairly by f**king idiots. So yeah I’m still p#####. I’m still p#####. That’s something that will never leave me. My sister is not here. Where are those people that were doing that? They probably don’t even care anymore. What are you doing for your community? Half the time these people were probably just looking for an opportunity to be famous and try to look like they are standing up for something. A lot of times we as Black folks we don’t react the way we should because we don’t think before we react. Everybody else in this country thinks before they react. And we wonder why we don’t have certain things in the Black community, it’s because of that right there. You wonder why the Italians have Little Italy. Why Asians have Chinatown? You wonder why Jewish people have anything?  Because they came here with a plan. We didn’t come here with a plan. We were here and we got released.  So therefore we don’t think when s**t happens. That was another case of a sad situation where you do have a brother trying to come in and do something, trying to educate. And instead of you embodying that and working with the brother, you turn on him. You turn on him and you want to talk about a video and talk about images. You want to talk about images! Images. Images are going to always be here people. We shouldn’t let TV make us feel how we want to feel inside. It still p##### me off till this day. Only reason I say that is because I know damn well that those people who did that at that time may not even feel the same way about it. Because if they did they would be out in front of some of these strip clubs and would be trying to talk to some of these sisters before they go in or when they come out and say, Yo sister let’s talk about it. Why are you doing this? I feel like, Yo these are grown people. This is oldest profession in the book, playboy. It was here before us, it’s going to be here after us. And I just think that it wasn’t real. But my sister passing was real.

“We saw something that works and everybody jumps on that bandwagon. We stopped being creative and started being manufacturers.”

AllHipHop.com: Are you tired of explaining yourself and “Tip Drill”?Nelly: Yeah but I feel like it’s one of those things that must be done because people still want to hold me to that. It’s like my whole career is based on this f**king video. My whole career!  It’s not about the fact that he saved seven lives with his bone marrow drive. It ain’t the fact the he spared over 1500 families with Feed The Children, not for profit organization. It’s not the fact that he’s providing computers and gave over 250 bikes to children that made honor roll or gave away nine scholarships. Nobody talks about that! People want to talk about a f**king video and a credit card swipe. It goes back to a quote from a letter that was written a long time ago where it says pin a light skinned slave against a dark-skinned slave. Pin a house n****r against a field n****r. Everytime that they get together or they start trying to find a way to combine. They turn it on us.  It’s the same thing that happened with the Don Imus s**t. They asked me do you think he should have been fired. Hell no he shouldn’t have been fired. For what? What did he say? He spoke the truth! That’s how he felt! What we should have did if we were thinking is say you know what CNBC? We got you! This is what we want to do. For the next five years we want you to pay us ten million dollars a year. We want to create “The Nappy Negro Head College Fund”.  We are going to take some of that money and we’re going to build some community centers. We’re going to build some rec centers. We are going to build some shelters for battered women. What did we do with it? We got an apology. Hooray! For what? That don’t change the way he f**king feels! He ain’t change his ways. That man still feels that way. And now that man is bigger than ever. I swear other races laugh at us. I swear! I think they do. Don’t no other race turn on each other. Why do we turn on each other? They blame it on Hip-Hop. You have Andre Crouch, the Crouch guy talking bout it’s a poison to Black people. How the hell could the biggest Black employer on the planet be a poison to Black people? How could you even figure that man? You are employed. Hip-Hop! You, the guy working the camera, my road manager. This is the largest black employer on the planet. And this is a poison? Who do you work for? Who the hell does he work for? Who the hell does this n***a work for? Who the hell does he work for, the Klan? I’m trying to figure out who does he work for to say some s**t like that. You sound ignorant. To each his own. AllHipHop.com: As the music industry continues to change and record sales continue to lag do you think it’s important for an artist to diversify to find income streams outside of music?Nelly: I think it is. But I don’t think everyone is going to be able to do it. You are going to have a lot of people trying but without a following how can you get people to wear your clothes, if people won’t buy your albums? How can you get people to come to your restaurant, if people don’t buy your albums? I’m allowed to do that because I have a certain fan base that supported me to do that. Jay-Z is allowed to do that because he has a fan base. Puff is allowed to do that because Puff has a fan base. Bad Boy sold a lot of freaking albums whether he did it as an artist or whether he did it as a company, you still know Puff. Same way with Jay and same way with 50 Cent. 50 might have been the line of where buying into artist for rappers because after that there was never another “superstar” rapper after that. I’m talking about a monster, I’m talking about somebody that sells over five million albums as a rapper. I don’t know other rapper that has sold over five millions albums. Even Kanye as big as he is he hasn’t had a record that has sold over five million records. And that’s a shame because I think if Kanye would have came out back in 2001 or 2002 he would have definitely sold five million records. But being in the type of market and the type of industry we are in now it’s hard but I’m going to say it’s not money to be made because of course there is. See what record companies won’t tell you… How much do they sell an album for online? Ten dollars. How much do they sell an album for in the stores? Ten dollars. Basically the same price. You can get the same album for ten dollars in the store that you can get online for ten dollars. What’s the difference when you buy the album online for ten dollars and when you buy the album at the store for ten dollars? When you by the album at the store for ten dollars they gotta pay the distributor. They gotta pay the record store. They also have to pay manufacturing. When you buy it online there is no manufacturing. You may have a small distributor cost because it’s online. There is no store. You are just paying the online guy. But you are still paying ten dollars! They want you to believe them f**kers is losing money like that. They ain’t losing it like that. They may not be making as much as they were. If you sell a million records online your overhead is less. They would love for you to buy more records online. Why? Because they won’t have no overhead. All you do is you download the album, and you send it to iTunes. They are selling songs for two and three dollars. It’s no overheard. You are just selling a song. You’re selling ID’s and ringtones and they making plenty of money. You got a guy like Flo Rida came out here and broke every download digital sale record known to freaking man. Guy sold what like four million f**king ringtones or some s**t like that. Come on that’s like four million dollars. And that’s at a dollar! Some of those ring tones was 1.99. (laughs) 2.99! Where did that money go? And I know your percentage to him is way low. This is his first record. He ain’t got no room to negotiate. So it’s one of those things where I think to the average m########### it’s going to look like, Yeah they losing money but somebody that knows better…that’s why you see Jay-Z out here trying to strike this deal with these companies out here. If there wasn’t any money to be made, how can somebody be offering somebody over 100 million dollars? How could you offer that if there’s no money to be made? If Jay-Z go online and sell a million records online at ten dollars. That’s ten million dollars! Just off that alone. That’s not including ringtones, that’s not including tours, all that. AllHipHop.com: What do you wish for Hip-Hop for the future?Nelly: What I wish for Hip-Hop is for people to learn the business side of it more. I hate seeing the young sisters and the young brothers coming in and it’s like you try to warn them about certain s**t then when it happens it’s, “But that’s not fair”. Listen, it’s business. You’re getting into a business. Now for Hip-Hop obviously you just want people to be creative. I think we stopped being creative. We just stopped trying new s**t. We saw something that works and everybody jumps on that bandwagon. We stopped being creative and started being manufacturers. When you’re a manufacturer you have a blueprint. When you’re creative you have no blueprint. Nelly f/ Akon & Ashanti “Body On Me” Video

AllHipHop.com: Okay. Jay and Beyonce did it. Nick and Mariah did it. Nelly: Oh I ain’t getting married. Hopefully one day.AllHipHop.com: So Nelly is not next?Nelly: No.AllHipHop.com: Not you and Ashanti?Nelly: Nah nah nah, we just cool. We have fun. I think right now we’re both married to these projects. You know Jay and Bey, you gotta applaud that. And I think both of them are probably at a point in their careers where…Jay’s been in this thing a long time. It’s about that feel. I don’t think you do it just because you see other people doing it or they think that you’re next. I think when it comes to a point in your life you do that type of thing. And I’m happy for them. They’re like Hip-Hop’s first almost billion dollar couple. I think it was perfect. You can’t picture them without each other now. It’s like were they always together? It’s like they should have always been together. And I’m happy for them. And the Mariah and Nick thing is just like where did that come from?AllHipHop.com: How is it being part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats?Nelly: It’s incredible being part owner of the Bobcats. I’m in business with one of the rarest things on the planet. That’s a Black billionaire. That’s Bob Johnson and possibly the greatest athlete of our time, Michael Jordan. And it’s a learning process for me. I ain’t gon’ front like I’m in the boardroom making decisions. Nah, that’s not me. That’s Mike. That’s his job. But I am in the learning process. It’s not like I don’t have a right to vote on certain things because being an owner you have that right. But for me it’s just more of a learning process and being the type of person I am I do make my comments. (laughs) You know I feel like you got my money, I’m a voice my words. (laughs) I feel real privileged to be in that position.AllHipHop.com: There are so many players crossing over. Has anyone tried to hand you an album yet?Nelly: You know what? I think they all chilled out about that, I think after the Allen Iverson thing. I think the NBA kind of put lid on that for a second. I don’t think people are trying to come out with albums to fast. But you do see a lot of them trying to get labels and I just tell them, “Yo…it’s a money pit. I try to tell them, no!” (laughs) Invest in something else. Put that money away in something else that can be more beneficial down the line. But as of right now. Don’t you believe it! (laughs)

Hip-Hop Rumors: Could Diddy Be Dissing Jay-Z On New Song – “Swagga Like Puff” ?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

COULD DIDDY BE DISSING…JAY?

Now, did you see this yet? I am not clear on what Diddy is trying to say with “Swagga Like Puff,” but I am thinking he is feeling some kinda way about all these ballers collaborating…without him!

He starts the song off with a Jay line…”What you want me to do? I’m sorry” As you know Jay-Z was the first to state that but then Puff said, “I ain’t never went no where…I just thought I’d let ya’ll live a bit.” He also says, “I been dating R&B chicks…” Hmmmmmm….

Here is another notable line…

“No one on the corner raise hell like this/ go to war with a Coast and get a star for that s**t.”

Anyway, you know from my rumors Diddy is on the West Coast working on his new album so I guess this is the first shot outta the chamber called album promotion. I’m sure Diddy just wants to get us talking and doesn’t really wanna start any real stuff on the rap tip.

When Puff pulls out the autotune, you know its some mess! Right? Check out “Swagga Like Puff.”

I wonder if that’s Cassie doing the M.I.A. rendition?

SPEAKING OF SWAGGER LIKE US…

Somebody on the comments suggested that Jay-Z took the song for his own album. I have some questions surrounding that: Namely, why would Jay use that song when T.I. was clearly the shining star of the track? I think its still a banging track, and Jay would just need to put another verse with no voice modulation on it.

Is anybody else disturbed that Kanye said he is “the s**t and the urine?” What exactly does that mean? It just sounds “yucky.”

I still listen to this song about 7x per 12 hours.

JUMPING OFF A BRIDGE FOR PLIES!

She HAS to be the No. 1 Bust It Baby doing some foolishness like this.

I don’t know, but this is close to a “sign the world is coming to an end.” Girl, cut that mess out!

Microsoft Dumps Seinfeld For Rapper Pharrell

Hip-Hop star Pharrell joins a cast of celebrities in a new $300 million dollar advertising campaign being launched by technology behemoth, Microsoft.

On September 4, Microsoft debuted two spots featuring comedian and spokesman Jerry Seinfeld and company founder Bill Gates, as part of the biggest ad spend in the company’s history.

One advertisement features Seinfeld and Gates shoe shopping while engaging in idle chatter and the second features Seinfeld and Gates engaged in conversation at a blue collar family’s dinner table.

Despite being on the air for less than two weeks, the company is pulling the ads, in favor of a new campaign featuring Williams, Deepak Chopra and actress Eva Longoria.

A Microsoft spokesman said the ad campaign was “completely in accordance” with the company’s plans and denied that a lukewarm response from consumers was to blame for the change.

The “second phase” of Microsoft’s ad campaign featuring Pharrell have the tagline: “Windows. Life without walls.”

Microsoft has tapped Williams’ marketing power in the past, as the hit making rapper/producer helped launch the company’s game Halo 3 in the United Kingdom.

It is not clear if Seinfeld, who was paid $10 million dollars to endorse Microsoft, will be featured in the print version of the advertisements, which are scheduled to debut this Fall.

ALBUM REVIEW: Raphael Saadiq – The Way I See It

With everyone so busy ripping off T-Pain ripping off Roget Troutman, everyone forgot about the other big trend of the past year – ripping off Mark Ronson ripping off Motown. A few weeks after B’s little sister re-lit the torch, Raphael Saadiq has grabbed it and carried it across the finish line for The Way I See It, a tribute to Detroit and Philly’s founding fathers of Soul.Honestly, with Saadiq being a thoroughly capable songwriter in his own right, it’s a touch disappointing to hear him push his own unique style to the side for a concept album that other artists have made their own innovative versions of lately (see: Gnarls Barkley). With that said, what The Way I See It lacks in innovation it makes up in general quality. “100 Yard Dash” is so pitch-perfect in its authenticity that it doesn’t much matter that isn’t a Master’s Thesis in Pro-Tools.Saadiq’s interpretation of the classic sound comes off as sincere (or at least very well studied) and rather than try to revise the decidedly old-school sound with 808s and sampling, he sticks almost entirely to a simple array of instruments and techniques. If Saadiq and Doc Brown hopped in a time machine and went back 45 years or so, he easily could’ve sold most of these exact songs to The Four Tops (“Love That Girl”), The Supremes (“100 Yard Dash”) or The Stylistics (“Oh Girl”).A few moments stray from the album’s lane by going against the grain and trying to pull in concepts that are out of place but they aren’t huge errors. Throwing Jay-Z on the remix to “Oh Girl” is also a bit contrary to tradition but hey, it’s Hov. His performance meets Saadiq a little more than halfway so as a bonus remix instead of the song’s original presentation, it’s a fun addition.Ultimately, The Way I See It relies heavily on the listener’s academic appreciation of his goal and thus can very quickly turn into an “all or nothing” project. Without a built-in ear for decades old R&B, the tracks may come off as boring or misguided but on the other hand, it isn’t as if his references are particularly obscure. Those who have the disposition for Saadiq’s trip down memory lane will be glad they went – that won’t be a large majority of the public, but for that crowd, there’s a perfectly serviceable Ne-Yo album this week as well. Love That Girl – Raphael Saadiq

Latifah, Usher & Ruben Studdard Back Boys & Girls Club

Musicians Queen Latifah, Usher and Ruben Studdard have joined forces with the Boy and Girls Club of America’s national spokesperson, Denzel Washington, to launch a new initiative aiming to empower America’s youth.

The BE GREAT campaign was unveiled yesterday (September 17) in Washington, D.C. as the Boys and Girls Club of America’s integrated advocacy campaign.

The new program was developed to express and address the most pressing issues facing American teens today.

It was created after an online survey conducted by the Boys and Girls Club found that 33% of young people said that education is the top issue facing America, while another 67% reported knowing someone who had dropped out of high school.

Additionally, a recent Teen Town Hall Meeting hosted by the organization in Los Angeles found that today’s kids and teens are also concerned about the increase in violence and teen pregnancies among their peers.

“As someone whose life was changed by the Boys & Girls Club, I can think of no better organization to lead the country in addressing the pressing needs of today’s young people,” Denzel Washington said. “I also believe that as adults we must assume responsibility for many of the conditions that are preventing our young people from achieving their full potential.”

The new program is also supported by former President Bill Clinton, Comedian/Author/Activist Bill Cosby, basketball legend Michael Jordan, Motown pioneer Smokey Robinson, filmmaker John Singleton, singer John Mellencamp, and actors Cuba Gooding, Jr., Edward James Olmos, Mario Lopez, Courtney B. Vance, Mark Wahlberg and Kerry Washington, all of who are Club alumi.

In addition to serving as a voice for the children it serves, the BE GREAT campaign also urges adults to get involved through volunteerism, financial and executive support of local Boys & Girls Clubs.

During a Congressional Breakfast hosted just before the announcement of the BE GREAT campaign, the Boys and Girls Club of America also announced their 2008-2008 National Youth of the Year.

The winner, Shonnetta Henry of Denver, Colorado kicked off her role by presenting a series of recommendations to the offices of presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama on the issues they should address on behalf of America’s teens.

Resources for those wishing to get involved with the BE GREAT campaign can be found at www.be-great.org.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

SWAGGER LIKE US: THEORIES

So “Swagger Like Us” has been officially removed from T.I.’s Paper Trail album. Why? Nobody knows, but we all know that song was one of the big buzz joints. There are some theories.

1) Jay, Kanye and Lil Wayne protested that T.I. secretly bodied them on the song like LL did Canibus on that song.

2) M.I.A. has come out of retirement, I hear. I think she wants her Swagger back…

3) R.Kelly, who appears on the album, protested Jay-Z and got it taken off.

4) Lyrically, that song just wasn’t it, with the exception of T.I.

WHY do you think it was removed from the album?

BUSTA’S NEW HOME!

I don’t know about you, but I anxiously await Busta Rhymes next album and guess what…its coming. Dude had two bangers and then, for some reason, Interscope dropped him. Actually, we heard that’s because he and Jimmy Iovine had a major fight. Well, Interscope’s loss is Motown’s gain. I am about 99.999999999% sure that Busta is now at the house Berry Gordy built. Motown! Anyway, I believe that Busta is slated to come out in December, a few weeks before Kanye West. Congrats, Bussa Bus!

FUNK FLEX DUMBS OUT ON R. KELLY?

From what I heard, this is actual and factual. People that listened to Hot 97 FM in New York Last night between 9:30 pm & 10:00 pm, got an earful. Funkmaster Flex spazzed out on R.Kelly and smashed on him for his interview that was aired on BET. I heard he blasted the host Toure, Jive Records and even BET for even airing that interview. Somebody sent me this quote, where Flex reportedly said. “Jive, whoever is in charge over there better get this guy in control. Let this had been one of their daughters and the outcome would have been different.” I heard Flex chided Kellz saying, “Homey you’re pushing 50 – stop it!” Flex then went on to say that any guy that is ” R’s ” age in the Tri~ State that is seeing an 18 or 19 year old is a LOWLIFE!!!! (Illseed note: I agree unless you are Hugh Hef..lol!)

ROYCE IS DISSIN’ JOE BUDDEN?

Everybody knows by now, AHH hosted a battle with Joe Budden and Royce…only thing is Budden’s brother got shot up that night. Well, maybe its time for us to host a new battle, because Royce has licked off a new shot.

What’s beef? I’ll play it one way, violate it Sunday get annihilated Monday

you n***as is actors, what is you recording?

I’ll leave you bleeding lying on the cutting room floor then,

listen to Joe Budden say, ‘I fell the f*** off,’

but he never fell on, i’ll just gonna ignore him,

make a n#### extra famous after I warned him,

don’t jump, you gay as, Greg Louganis, into that water,

you dont want it, you can either have a nice afternoon,

or you can have your family do the mournin’”

DEATHROW RECORDS – BACK TO TO SELL

Here is the latest…we are hearing Death is going back on the auction block. The new owners, put down about $2 million down to secure the $24 million dollar purchase of Death Row Records, but there was a snag. The hedge-fund that was supposed to pay fofr the rest of the purchase pulled out of the deal. Now, guess why? They reneged, because the economy is in the toilet! Damn, this administration is messing up so bad, everybody is affected! Anyway, TheDirty.com reports that the trusties of the estate have already blown $5 million thus far to keep that deal in place. We’ll see who has the bread to cop. Dre? Dre!? Get your masters please!

PROTEST LAKEVIEW TERRACE?

I don’t know WHAT is going on, but I thought I would show you a letter regarding the movie that features Samuel L. Jackson. Check it out below and see that these people STILL live next to each other in real life!

in real life the cop got fired by lapd, but still lives next to those people. they have mutual restraining orders & he is appealing his termination & has recently filed civil suit against the neighbors for ‘slander’. so the hostility is active. the community should be supported for standing up to a rogue cop.

& the lapd must account for the ‘personality disorders’ of their officers. had this family not stood up to his police-sanctioned abuse, he would still be on the force doing his dirt with whoever still there he was doing dirt with. the family says had they lived in lapd jurisdiction rather than lasd jurisdiction, they would be in serious danger.

we will be joining the true life community at the heart of the movie in a demonstration of support for their situation, and also to demand overview of lapd hiring practices, training & mental/social wellness guarantees. our program is an all-elected, all-civilian police control board.

Did you click that link? That could be called “Jesus Moonwalks.”

Ciara might not wanna sue Vibe. They are threatening to release the untouched pics of CiCi to prove she was actually naked for a recent photoshoot. I think they need to release every single picture so we can see what’s up!

50 Cent goes in on Jay-Z:

“I’m the largest Hip-Hop touring artist. Em is the biggest rap artist on the planet and I’m the largest touring artist. Jay-Z doesn’t have a lot of records that have really big international followings. For him to get out there and be the headliner, it was just good positioning on his team’s part. “

SHELZ’S ARBITRARY MOMENTS

Damaged and Plastic?

Donnie Klang told the folks over at the Round Table that he’s had a handful of Aubrey O’Day (one of the blondes from Danity Kane) and the tata’s are fake. This is quite a statement considering she claims no plastic surgery. He also said her Mom’s girls are even faker. Ha haaaaaa at the echelon of fakeness and the interviewer suggesting that saline could be genetic.

Liquor Lab Wars…

Some guy who is President of some liquor manufacturer said the Dr. Dre is vodka-jacking because they already make the sparkling variety. Check what he has to say:

“I am very complimented that Dr. Dre has recognized how innovative and special our sparkling vodka is and is trying to copy it. My concern is that it isn’t produced by our patented method and may well turn out to be a very poor imitation … I hope that consumers will not be swayed by the celebrity endorsement of a copycat product by Dr. Dre. There are a lot of mixed messages going on, Dre’s unreleased album is even called Detox to ad a bitterly ironic twist.”

I’m sure this dude doesn’t really think Dre is in the liquor lab formulating the brand. It’s being reported that this guy’s company has a patent on the manufacturing process, not the liquor itself. Sounds like we have some vodka beef a brewing.

Spectacular and His Jimmy Hat.

Considering the whole naked Ciara thing, I guess it took us a while to get around to telling yall that one of those lil boys from Pretty Ricky is all butt booty naked in Vibe too. Yup lil ladies, Mr. Spectacular is just wearing a well placed hat and a smile.

[ILLSEED NOTE: Shelz attempted to put some scantily clad men on AHH and I had to block her. I just couldn’t. Sorry ladies!]

I’m not quote sure where this is headed, but I think it will be great! This s**t is funny!

If that wasn’t enough for him the next day he was spotted poolside with his eyes on actress Ashley Scott who he got no burn from resulting him to hit up Lavo nightclub again where he was spotted with another unknown blonde! Yahoo News say the fundraiser raised 9 Million dollars! Read below: Barack Obama partied with Hollywood celebrities Tuesday night and with the help of Oscar-winning singer and actress Barbra Streisand raised an eye-popping $9 million for his presidential campaign and the Democratic Party.Obama spent more than an hour before dinner getting his picture taken with guests. If not then he looked like a ________ (you fill it in since I can’t say what I really want to say) Vibe Clears up the Ciara Drama like Pro Activ….. Vibe editor Danyel Smith has released a statement answering the rumors of Ciara suing the magazine over the naked photo’s she took for the current issue of Vibe. Peep below: ‘It’s just dramatic. I’m actually really sad. Almost any photo you see on the cover of Vibe or any magazine is airbrushed [to some degree]. What I was thinking of doing, actually, was releasing the unretouched photos [on Vibe’s] website, so people can see what the hullabaloo is all about.”  “I have so much respect for Ciara and Ciara was so happy when she pitched the idea to us, and the photos are actually striking and beautiful.” According to some good sources of mine within Ciara’s camp the singer will not be suing the magazine! My bet is they wanted to stir up some controversy to go along with the photos because just putting them on a newsstand wasn’t enough! Sounds like a plan stan 😉 Lady Drama’s Food For Thought: Is it me or has Ciara lost her touch… Oh wait she never really had it to begin with! But she sure can dance! I’m going to AHH’s Social Lounge tonight… how bout you?  and on that note I’m out! Houston Hip-Hop Stars React To Hurricane Ike

Although Hurricane Ike is gone from Texas, the recovery from the wrath the storm wrought is just beginning.

In exclusive interviews with AllHopHop.com, various members of the Houston Hip-Hop community illuminated on how they are coping in the aftermath of Ike’s destruction.

An estimated 40% of Houston residents ignored warnings to flee the city, expecting that the hurricane would not cripple the region, which eventually suffered more than $20 million in property damage.

While assessing the damage to his own properties, rapper Chamillionaire explained to AllHipHop.com why he took no chances and is relieved he chose to evacuate.

“I honestly didn’t expect the storm to have as big an impact on Houston as it did. The storm lifted trees from the roots at my house and knocked down a fence at my car shop but that’s nothing compared to some of the disaster the storm caused for others,” he stated. “I feel blessed to have the means to get out of the city to seek refuge in surrounding cities but feel pity for all the people that are still sitting in the dark with no power. I really hope they can get all the power in the city restored sooner than the 2 week recovery time they are estimating.”

Madd Hatta, radio host of 97.9 The Box’s #1 rated morning show, elaborated on the perilous situations many stranded residents now face.

According to him, the lack of essential living items like water and gas now leave many in more danger than the hurricane itself.

“I stayed on the air for about 40 plus hours and I’m still working day parts for talent that couldn’t come back on the air,” Hatta revealed. “The city was shocked that it was touched the way it was. We didn’t see it. I’m without power at home and luckily the station had water and food. The city is begging for gas, water, and ice. It’s a hectic situation. But we’re a strong city…we will survive.”

Despite not being able to offer physical assistance, Madd Hatta colleague Terri Thomas explained that they were still able to act as a calming influence on air, by offering residents valuable rescue information.

“People were terrified, calling us on the phone. Family and friends huddled in closets and smalls rooms for information or a song of hope or even just comfort knowing that they were not alone,” Thomas recalled. “We made it through together. We did our best to give out information on the storm, relief efforts, rescue efforts, and safety measures. For those that were stuck, we were able to link up neighbors to share supplies and a helping hand.”

It is estimated that over 100,000 homes were flooded. Many cornered residents resorted to climbing trees and rooftops, floating on debris, and punching holes in their attics to survive.

Ozone-award winner Paul Wall is one of an estimated 2 million still without power, but remains thankful for his safety and stresses that his fellow Texans remain cognizant of helping out their neighbors and community wherever possible during this difficult time.

“I haven’t had any power since Friday (September 12).There’s 13 people at my house because of all the flooding. But by God’s grace there’s no major damage to my house, and most importantly we’re all safe,” Paul explained. “I never thought a hurricane would come this far north. This is the time for family and friends to stick together and for us to be kind to strangers and look out for our neighbors. Really this is all a walk in the park compared to Katrina so I can’t complain. I know my fellow Texans out there are going through far worse than me and I wish there was something we could do to help out.”

Also among the lucky few were Pimp C widow Chinara Butler and their six-year-old daughter Christian, both of whom narrowly escaped Ike’s punishing flood waters that consumed and saturated their entire home.

Still shell-shocked, Butler remained short for words and in awe of Mother Nature’s frightening power.

“Wow!” she exclaimed after surveying her ruined home. “One day you’re here, and the next day you’re gone.”

Hurricane Ike made landfall on September 12 over Galveston, Texas with winds of 110 mph and waves overcoming the 17 foot high protective Galveston Seawall.

As a result, landmarks like the historic Balinese Room nightclub were completely washed away.

The TMI Boyz, some of whom have family from Galveston, allege that the federal government is still making the same mistakes that cost people their lives during the rampage of 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

“This is a major situation we have here at home, the citizens of the United States don’t have any where to live, and nothing to live off of, we have the same FEMA problems as New Orleans after Katrina,” the group disclosed in a joint statement. “You would think that the government would have already prepared itself for a catastrophic event such as Hurricane Ike, some of our family members lost everything.”

Houston officials report that relief efforts are still ongoing and estimate a completion time of 2 weeks before power is returned to every Houston resident.

At press time, Hurricane Ike’s death toll for Texas stands at 19 people.

Gangsta Rap Pioneer Lonzo Drops DVD On Compton Rap

West Coast Hip-Hop pioneer Lonzo Williams has released a new DVD detailing the rise of the Compton/Los Angeles rap scene, AllHipHop.com has learned.

Williams, who is often referred to as the “Godfather of West Coast Rap,” partnered with Dub Kris Media to produce the new documentary Once Upon A Time In Compton.

The new film follows the rise of the West Coast scene from its earliest moments from Williams’ privileged behind-the-scenes viewpoint as CEO of the influential label Kru Cut Records.

Before creating the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, which featured a young Dr. Dre and fellow N.W.A. member DJ Yella, Williams developed his career as a businessman and DJ.

His Eve After Dark nightclub was an integral part in the development of L.A.’s Hip-Hop culture, introducing such artists as Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and of course Dre.

In 1987, when the group was at its height, the World Class Wreckin Cru hit the national charts with the single “Turn Off the Lights.”

Combining his personal tale with vintage footage including Dre’s first gig as a DJ, Williams creates a story that few have told before.

As the man who introduced Eazy-E to his Ruthless Records partner Jerry Heller, Williams is able to provide insight into the creation and rise of N.W.A., bringing to the forefront other key players who have often been left out of rap history.

Once Upon A Time In Compton also portrays Lonzo Williams’ continuing presence and influence in Hip-Hop.

Once Upon A Time In Compton is available online at www.Amazon.com and www.FilmBaby.com.
