Some say Vince Staples is up next, take a look at the All Def Digital x Grammy U piece on the up and coming rapper’s organic movement and let us know what you think. Staples, who is one-third of the group Cutthroat Boyz, first appeared on the first Earl Sweatshirt project, followed by an appearance on a Mac Miller mixtape, which led to him being signed. He’s currently signed with Def Jam.
“A lot of people saw what I could be or what I should be before I did…a lot of people believed in me doing something, so I might as well, you know, give it a shot and see how it turns out,” Long Beach rapper Vince Staples said nonchalantly of his rise to prominence.
“People find excuses for their downfall,” the down-to-earth emcee said, before he defended major label deals, saying, “If every single rapper and musician that we look up to that’s considered a legend has been on a major label, why is it considered a bad thing?”
Staples advises all up & coming artists to follow his free-spirited footsteps, and focus on their music, not the fame: “The worst thing an artist can do when trying to make it or get discovered is trying to make it or get discovered. You’re gonna blow it. Just make music, and if it works, it works, and if it don’t, it don’t.”
