Chance The Rapper Argues Other Indie Artists Can Follow His Success

(AllHipHop News) Chance The Rapper is a champion of going the independent route in the music business. The Acid Rap, Surf, and Coloring Book projects were all made available for free, but the Chicago native still managed to earn a reported $32 million over a 12-month period.

Despite Chance’s success, there have still been debates in the industry about the potential reach of an indie act. Apple Music’s Head of Artist Curation Carl Chery talked about that topic while on Everyday Struggle.

“Chance is an anomaly. He’s special,” said Chery. “But his success is misleading. Now you have all these other aspiring artists thinking you don’t need a label. Chance is special. He’s charismatic. He’s smart as hell. He’s just special.”

Chery’s comments on the Complex show inspired a DJ Booth article that included the author writing, “[Chance] should be allowed to talk about leading the independent artist charge while knowing full well that the level of success he has achieved isn’t realistic for everyone.”

“This is wack. Yall steady tellin [people] they need a label/publisher/distributor to achieve success as an artist. [That’s] a lie,” tweeted Chance in response to DJ Booth.

“Its only unrealistic because of the conditioning all artists are exposed to by different forms of media creating the narrative that you need to be discovered or put on in order to be successful. We [wouldn’t] seek out deals if mfs knew there were other avenues,'” added the “No Problem” performer.

He continued, “Also have some damn patience, all your favorite artists are locked up in deals and until they get out (and stay out) you wont see the realization of their full potential… EVERY ARTIST HAS ‘IT.’ If ‘it’ means the access and ability to be successful (assuming this success is individual to the artist) while retaining ownership of your pub/masters and royalties from other media appearances, full oversight of metrics etc. THEY ALL HAVE ‘IT.'”

TDE President Punch Celebrates Critical Acclaim For ‘DAMN’ & ‘Ctrl’

(AllHipHop News) Top Dawg Entertainment could rightfully profess to be the most critically acclaimed music label of 2017. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN and SZA’s Ctrl earned the two artists a combined 12 Grammy nominations.

In addition, DAMN and Ctrl have dominated numerous end-of-the-year lists. According to Metacritic, Kendrick’s latest LP was named the best album of the year by 39 outlets, giving the Compton emcee the most #1 placements.

SZA is currently in the top 5 on the tally. At least five critics called Ctrl the #1 album of 2017, and the R&B project earned second place from 10 different sources.

TDE President Terrence “Punch” Henderson acknowledged the success of the company’s ’17 releases. He tweeted, “It’s an amazing feeling watching DAMN and Ctrl alternate between the 1 and 2 spot on all of these year end list. 2 different artist[s], 2 different POVs, 2 genres, 2 different concepts, female and male. So dope all around.”

Billboard, Rolling Stone, NPR, Pitchfork, Complex, and Spin are among the publications to crown DAMN the best album of 2017. Ctrl topped the year-end album lists for New York Daily News, Noisey, Time, and Vice.

Black Thought Talks His Freestyle Going Viral & Inventing Mumble Rap

https://youtu.be/prmQgSpV3fA

(AllHipHop News) For the uninitiated, Black Thought’s 10-minute freestyle on Hot 97 was an introduction to the undeniable emceeing skills of The Roots rapper. However, fans of the Philadelphia band have known for years the man born Tariq Trotter is a beast on the mic.

Rolling Stone spoke with Black Thought after his improvised/pre-written verbal display went viral. The Grammy winner was asked why he thinks this particular rap session – which Diddy called “the greatest freestyle in all of Hip Hop history” – spread across the web so quickly.

“We’re at a point in history where lyricism almost comes last in very many regards. So for someone from my school, who has come from the ilk of lyricism being held in far higher regard, it brings a different sort of urgency to every performance,” stated Black Thought. “That’s what I went into that Flex freestyle with, with that same urgency that I had when I was a young person coming to New York from Philly with very much to prove.”

He continued, “I think people had almost forgotten. Maybe not forgotten, but people had given up hope that someone out there was still around who is doing it the way we had done it… I mean, I’m not like a unicorn. There are very many artists who make those sorts of beats, and write and record those sorts of lyrics and performances, and carry that same cadence. But they don’t necessarily have the same sort of platform [that I have].”

The freestyle was seen by some observers as a direct counterweight to the rise of “mumble rap.” Black Thought made it clear he was not purposely trying to deflate that contemporary sub-genre.

“Lots of people are saying that I shut down mumble rap in one 10-minute setting. But that wasn’t my intention, because mumble rap – if we go back – that’s something I invented. I invented rapping without actually using the words,” explained Thought. “[W]ith songs like ‘Don’t Say Nuthin’,’ freestyles like ‘New Year’s At Jay Dee’s,’ I essentially invented mumble rap, where you go for many bars without saying any words. And when I did it, it came from a place of being inspired by scatting.”

Chance The Rapper Critiques Racism Symbolism In ‘Bright’ Movie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUY3GVByRUs

(AllHipHop News) Will Smith’s new drama Bright has been met with polarizing reviews. Movie critics slammed the film (30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences seemed to enjoy the David Ayer-directed Netflix original (89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes).

Chance The Rapper decided to offer his own review of the fantasy motion picture via his Twitter account. The Coloring Book creator focused mostly on the racism allegories in Bright.

He posted:

Wondering how you guys are feeling about the lynched ork in #Brightmovie. I found the way they tried to illustrate americas racism through the mythical creatures to be a little shallow. I always feel a lil cheated when I see allegorical racism in movies cause that racism usually stems from human emotion or tolerance but not by law or systems the way it is in real life. The characters in #Bright live in a timeline where racism is gone… cause we hate ork now… I think the idea is that they’re a step below bottom of the spectrum blackness. Which is why Will’s character, the Mexican cop and the ork have that dialogue in the street… I tried to look at it that way but a few minutes into the movie they make wills character say “Fairy Lives don’t Matter.”

Two New York Rappers Prepare For War

(AllHipHop Rumors) New York has always beefed with itself for years and years and years, since the dawn of Hip-Hop. And, now there is another beef brewing, but it has nothing to do with rap music. Casanova 2X and Tekashi 69, the rainbow colored rapper. Now, we all know Cas is that dude in the streets and is certified. Tekashi 69, also known as 6ix9ine, is out in these streets too. 6ix9ine has a gang of gangs behind him, and we heard some BK Street OG’s.

I can’t lie. I really don’t know what the hell is going on in these posts, but there seems to be some slick talk on social media. Check it out….they go t## for tat. Rappers. Back and forth in the comments.

DID O.T. Genasis Get Kicked Out Of The Kardashians’ Holiday Party?

By Trendspotter

I’m pretty sure we all saw the amazing Christmas party the Kardashians threw for the holiday this year. With the Kardashian siblings dressed in their all whites looking amazing, they all took to social media to share some of their holiday memories with the world.

Of course a party isn’t a party with a little drama thrown into the mix. Right?

Khloe Kardashian’s best friend and ATL twin Malika Haqq showed up with the Cali rapper and boyfriend O.T. Genasis.

Rumors say he showed up to the party as a “Crip” Santa.

Dressed in blue from head to toe, Mama Kris Jenner allegedly said “No” as she did not want to worry about any gang issues with other guests of the party.

They allegedly gave him the option to change and come be apart of the festivities but he refused. His team also alleged that “he wasn’t down to wear one of Kanye’s Christmas sweaters with holes in them. Which didn’t make a bit of sense cause the party was full of fashion heads who pulled out their best looks.

I can only assume it’s safe to say that the Kardashian clan are definitely about that life. Well maybe just Khloe and Kylie

Who would have ever known they’d have gang members brewing around them?

The party looked amazing as the decor told a beautiful Winter in Wonderland story.

Maybe all of this didn’t truly happen, but it’s funny and sounds totally believable. LOL!

Cardi B Isn’t Worried About Cheating Or Nudes, 2 Major Collabos Otw!

By Trendspotter (@Trend_spotter86)

(AllHipHop Rumors) As families were coming together, and engagements were sweeping across the internet this Christmas season. Cardi B seems to have come across a little trouble in paradise.

After an alleged hacking of her fiancé Offsets iPhone and cheating rumors hit the internet, Cardi is not paying the cheating rumors any mind, but Cardi did take to Twitter to let us all know she is unbothered about her nudes hitting the internet.

As if Cardi wasn’t a stripper before, her fans ran to her defense battling anyone with something to say.

The Bronx rapper has also teamed up with her Atlantic label mate Rita Ora for a track titled “Girls Girls Girls.” Cardi of course hoped on the track and from what we hear she did not disappoint.

“I just want to kiss bad b###### all day / Cardi B stands for both ways / bisexual…incredible… I’m telling you… only kiss it if it tastes edible,” rapped Cardi.

The track is set to be on Rita’s second album which has no release date as of yet.

Of course she is not stopping there and shows no signs of slowing up.

Everybody wants to hop on a track with the new chick in the game, apparently even Bruno Mars.

The “Finese” remix is on the way, and it even has a video coming along with it.

Even after signing a non-disclosure waiver, one of the set workers hoped on IG to share his experience with both artists on set.

The production staff said that the video was fire.

They even admitted to being on set for 12 hrs for a 4minute video, calling the collab “greatness.”

I don’t know about you, but i am definitely ready for more Cardi.

She dominated the female Hip Hop industry all 2017, and i don’t see any changes for 2018.

Are you guys here for new Cardi B music? Should she address cheating rumors?

Joe Budden To Face Off With Lil Yachty & Migos In Game Of Dodgeball

By Rico Panacea (@RicoPanacea)

(AllHipHop Rumors) Joe Budden and Lil Yachty have been at odds for much of 2017 with the confusion beginning in May.

The May conflict started after Yachty was a guest on Joe’s then Hip Hop debate home Everyday Struggle with DJ Akademiks and Nadeska Alexis.

Lil Yachty felt slighted after being questioned about his business acumen by Joe Budden.

The rift fizzled before re-igniting after the 2017 BET Awards where Budden and the ‘Everyday Struggle’ crew interviewed Yachty’s fellow Quality Control label mates the Migos.

The interview saw Budden drop the microphone before exiting the Everyday Struggle BET Awards set. Only to be countered with a rising Migos trio with Quavo asking “What you trying to do?”

Confusion ensued after with not much happening further, but the rivalry was recently jump started once again after the Migos released their video for “Ice Tray,” a record they used to call out Budden from their ‘Quality Control: Control The Streets Volume 1’ compilation.

On Sunday, Lil Yachty was on Twitter speaking with his followers about wanting to play dodgeball against any fellow rapper and his crew. To which Joe Budden responded, “U trash in Dodgeball.” Yachty followed with “OMG PLEASE LETS PLAY” before Budden responded again with :I’m in, tell K grab us a partner to livestream it. There’s a check here somewhere.”

Lil Yachty then responded with “Y’all already know who finna be on my team..” and posted a gif of the Three Amigos to which Budden responded “Good, i owe them” before later subtweeting the ether with “Shirts vs blouses… slaps knee.” Even Diddy later chimed in on the Twitter conversation indicating his network Revolt TV might be interested in airing the dodgeball match.

Who do you think would win a dodgeball battle between Joe Budden’s crew and Lil Yachty/Migos?
