‘Godfather Of Harlem’ Star Forest Whitaker Talks About Malcolm X’s Close Relationship With Bumpy Johnson

(AllHipHop News) Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker is stepping into the shoes of legendary New York City gangster Bumpy Johnson for the upcoming EPIX drama Godfather Of Harlem. The period piece centers around the Charles “Lucky” Luciano associate’s return to his old neighborhood after serving time in prison.

Additionally, Godfather Of Harlem showcases the relationship between Bumpy Johnson and Muslim minister/political activist Malcolm X. AllHipHop spoke to Forest Whitaker about discovering the alliance between the two 1960s-era figures.

“I had not been completely aware of the connection between Malcolm and Bumpy Johnson. That was something that I was learning as we were doing the research to get ready to do the project. And it grew and grew and grew and grew,” explained Whitaker.

The Black Panther star continued, “So that was interesting to me on a number of levels. I think one is when people are trying to rise up in a community where they feel like they have no options, what are their choices to be able to be successful. In another, what these two different men with different philosophies are doing in their minds, they uplift themselves.”

Malcolm X faced alleged death threats from the Nation of Islam, a religious organization he once served as an influential leader. The man later known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz was also under constant surveillance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“It was really interesting because I guess there was a story that they told me that Bumpy had surrounded Malcolm with people as his bodyguard to protect him during a period of time,” Whitaker tells AllHipHop. “And Malcolm said, ‘I can’t do that one anymore. I can’t be represented, I can’t be connected to you.’ And [Bumpy] took those guys away about two weeks before Malcolm was killed. So that was really a striking thing that was said to me during that time.”

Godfather of Harlem is scheduled to premiere September 29 at 10 pm ET. The ten-episode series also features Vincent D’Onofrio, Ilfenesh Hadera, Nigel Thatch, Paul Sorvino, Giancarlo Esposito, Lucy Fry, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Antoinette Crowe-Legacy. Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein wrote and executive produced the program. Forest Whitaker is credited as an executive producer as well.

Unfortunately, that may not be the case. 3K’s Dungeon Family comrades Big Boi and Sleepy Brown were asked about Thurz’s accidental André 3000 revelation.

“Lies… Dré was probably playing some music, but he’s not working on a record,” OutKast member Big Boi told Ryan Cameron Uncensored Speak. “He’s been recording songs for years. Kinda recording, kinda just stacking up. A structured record? Nah, not yet.”

Sleepy Brown added, “The story is that he was in the studio with Anderson .Paak when Anderson .Paak was working on his thing and he played him some songs to see if he wanted to work on one of them. I guess [Thurz] was in there [and] heard the songs.” Big Boi later said, “Dré is in Philly shooting a TV show [Dispatches from Elsewhere] right now.”

André 3000 did make a guest appearance on Anderson .Paak’s Ventura track “Come Home.” Over the last several years, the enigmatic emcee has also shown up on songs by Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, Frank Ocean, Solange, Kid Cudi, Travis Scott, and others.

Footage Of 6ix9ine’s Alleged Kidnapping Hits The Internet

(AllHipHop News) Over the last two days, Daniel “Tekashi 6ix9ine” Hernandez testified in federal court about a wide range of topics allegedly connected to the Nine Trey Bloods gang in New York City. Hernandez has been called the “star witness” for the prosecution’s case against Anthony “Harv” Ellison and Aljermiah “Nuke” Mack.

“As alleged in the Superseding Indictment, Aljermiah Mack, like his Nine Trey co-conspirators, engaged in brazen acts of gun violence and narcotics dealing. Thanks to our remarkable partners at HSI, ATF, and the NYPD, he now faces federal charges for his serious crimes,” stated U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman.

Ellison and Mack are on trial for conspiracy, robbery, and firearm charges. They are also accused of kidnapping and robbing 6ix9ine in 2018. The defendants’ legal team claimed the incident was actually set-up by the “Fefe” rapper to promote his music career.

Footage of the alleged incident has made its way to YouTube. In the video, the person credited as Tekashi can be heard saying, “I’ll give you everything. I promise you, Harv.”

In another section of the clip, 6ix9ine seems to admit to being scared and mentions the word extortion. Ellison allegedly forced 6ix9ine into another vehicle before someone identified as “Sha” assaulted him.

According to reports, Tekashi described the kidnapping in court on Wednesday. He is quoted saying, “We came to an agreement. If I gave them the jewelry they would let me go.”

Hernandez testified that the kidnappers drove him back to his Bedford-Stuyvesant home, and Sha went inside to retrieve the jewelry. However, instead of letting him go, the Brooklyn native said they drove him around for a few more blocks before he escaped and was able to jump into the backseat of a random car stopped nearby.

Tory Lanez Responds To Backlash For “Showing Love” To 6ix9ine

(AllHipHop News) Most of the Hip Hop world is paying close attention to Daniel “Tekashi 6ix9ine” Hernandez this week. The “Gummo” rapper has spent the last few days testifying in federal court against his alleged Nine Trey Bloods brethren Anthony “Harv” Ellison and Aljermiah “Nuke” Mack.

Reportedly, 6ix9ine also used his time on the stand to inform the court about rival Hip Hop artists Michael “Trippie Redd” White IV and Caswell “Casanova” Senior. Hernandez’s role as a cooperating witness for the government led to judgment from some rap fans and industry figures.

Tekashi’s “Kika” collaborator chose not to throw the Brooklynite under the bus during an interview with Complex News. In fact, Tory Lanez expressed support for his friend.

“As a person, and regardless of whatever he did, I kinda miss that guy. That was my n*gga. He was a funny guy,” said Lanez about 6ix9ine. He added, “I don’t really give a f*ck how people view me. N*ggas don’t like me already. God forbid, I kill somebody tomorrow, and I go to jail, and y’all look at me as a murderer for the rest of my life, that doesn’t change the songs that I made.”

Apparently, Tory caught significant backlash for his comments. The 27-year-old Toronto representative addressed the negative reaction on his Instagram page.

“Showing LOVE to somebody who you made records with is VERY different than CONDONING [SOMEONE’S] ACTIONS … y’all blogs can CHOP up the interview and make sh*t seem interesting for your fans … but watch the whole interview … and don’t try to get me caught up in nun of that. FOH,” posted Lanez.

Iggy Azalea Refers To Wendy Williams As A “Crackhead” For Commenting On Her “Fake Body”

(AllHipHop News) Wendy Williams is back to covering the “hot topics” on her nationally syndicated television talk show. On a recent episode, Wendy had something to say about Nicki Minaj’s retirement announcement, but she then threw shots at Iggy Azalea in the process.

“Who’s the Australian girl with the fake body?” asked Williams during the segment about the public’s willingness to wait for Minaj to unretire. “I said, ‘People waited for Iggy Azalea?’ Even if they waited for her, Iggy Azalea is white, so she’s a different type of rapper because she’s white.”

Iggy saw a clip of Wendy’s comments, and she responded on Twitter. The “Fancy” performer tweeted, “Who’s the [crackhead] in the [halfway] house with the gossip show thing? ‍♀️.”

When a fan suggested she just ignore Williams and her audience, Iggy replied, “Trust me I’m not. I can’t take advice or opinions on anything from someone with a botched Groupon surgery who clearly hates themselves so severely they’ve developed a crippling drug addiction & been abandoned by everyone around them that’s not on a paid wage.”

Williams has been open about her addiction to cocaine. In March, she admitted to living in a sober house. The 55-year-old TV star also talked about working with a 24-hour sober coach.

The Prince of L.A. Is Aiming To Be Hip-Hop Royalty

The Prince of L.A. is the next hottest artist to blow out of Los Angeles, as evidenced in his name. It’s crazy to think the 19-year-old has been making music since the young age of 12. At that point, he was the youngest out of everyone doing it. The name was picked up for his efforts in giving back to the community, etc.

While he fondly remembers his dad (former rapper) teaching him how to rap, it was the moment him, Blueface, and Almighty Suspect released “Come And Find Me” that pushed him into the mainstream light. In fact, he and Blueface grew up together in Mid-City, oftentimes hanging out around the vicinity of World On Wheels.

AllHipHop: For those who don’t know, who is The Prince of L.A.?

The Prince of L.A. is somebody who’s born and raised in LA. Basically, everything about me is LA, I’m a young entertainer, music artist, dancer, all of the above.

AllHipHop: Why should people f##k w/ you?

The Prince of L.A. : People should f##k with me because I’m me. I offer something different and I’m real hella versatile. Aside from music, I have a personality that’s crazy so people would f##k with that even if they don’t f##k with my music.

AllHipHop: What’s your personality?

The Prince of L.A. : High-tech. I just have a lot of energy. I’m laidback when I need to be but when it comes to going on stage and recording music, the energy’s there when it needs to be.

AllHipHop: How would you describe your sound?

The Prince of L.A. : Musically I’m hella cocky, especially through my music. People who really know me, I’m hella laidback. When it comes to that music though, I’m hella cocky. Performing, recording, that’s something I’m really confident in.

AllHipHop: How did you meet Blueface?

The Prince of L.A. : Just being around there [Midtown]. When people come from the same area, it’s not hard to run into each other. It’s like if me and you were to live in the same apartment building, it probably wouldn’t be hard for us to know each other. It wasn’t hard. I started off because a lot of people who knew me before I went viral, they knew I used to deejay at World On Wheels.

AllHipHop: How old were you when you were deejaying?

The Prince of L.A. : That was only a year and a half ago. I was deejayIng there for a minute. My uncle threw a little function or whatever and Blueface before he blew up, he had pulled up. I deejayed his set then he DM’ed me. Shortly after, it was a wrap.

AllHipHop: You knew how to deejay and all that?

The Prince of L.A. : Yeah, I’ve been deejaying since I was 13 or 14 years old. A lot of people don’t know that I can really deejay. Any of my fans who knew me before I went viral knows I can dance, flip, I can do a lot of stuff. But anybody who’s just catching wind of my music, they feel “okay his music is cool.” They probably don’t know too much about me and what I’m able to do.

AllHipHop: What was it like seeing Blueface’s career skyrocket?

The Prince of L.A. : It was crazy. It happened right before my eyes. Especially last summer, we were doing every show together. Going crazy. For me to see him go viral and really go crazy is inspiring. Motivational. It just pushed me. It gave me an outlook like you can make it happen too.

AllHipHop: You’re with him for all his sold-out shows. What’s been the craziest memory on tour?

The Prince of L.A. : Mmm, it’s a lot of them. One time when he first started throwing the water on himself, this man was going to every girl in the crowd leaning the water bottle over. [holds bottle at d##k] Holding it like this, pouring it in their mouth. I’m like these girls are crazy. At that point, I’m like oh yeah, star power is for real.

AllHipHop: Did he really sleep with all of those women?

The Prince of L.A. : Aye man, I don’t know. That’s what happens after the show. We be together but after the show, I go and do my own thing.

AllHipHop: What shows do you have upcoming?

The Prince of L.A. : I have a show in Oregon that I’m booked for in October. Actually, it’s a lot of people inquiring right now through my manager J Allen. We just waiting to lock something in, but the inquiries are at an all-time high.

Dave East’s Lawyer Addresses Assault Allegation During Las Vegas Threesome

(AllHipHop News) Earlier today, reports surfaced asserting Dave East and an unnamed woman were cited for misdemeanor battery for an encounter in Las Vegas over the weekend. Details about the situation, which supposedly took place during or after a three-way sexual encounter, are still murky.

The female accuser claimed East punched her in the arm after an argument. However, the “Everyday” rapper insisted he was the victim of a champagne bottle-throwing attack by the woman who was supposedly upset because she was not getting enough attention. East’s attorney, Stacey Richman, provided a statement to AllHipHop about the matter.

The woman threw a soap dispenser and bottles of champagne at Dave. One of the bottles shattered on the wall, sending glass flying and cutting Dave. Another bottle hit Dave with force in the head. The woman sought to continue her assault,” says Richman.

The lawyer continues, “Dave did not respond with violence. Instead, Dave was concerned for everyone’s safety. Dave justifiably took the woman by the arm and put her out of the room. Dave did not assault anyone. He was ordered by his doctor to get CAT scan after the incident. We are waiting on the results. It was later learned that the woman had secreted Dave’s phones in her handbag.”

Reportedly, police did not arrest anyone involved in the alleged violent episode inside a Delano Las Vegas hotel room. Both Dave East and the woman were taken to different hospitals for treatment.

Keys partnered with director Cara Stricker for the triptych of one-shot scenes, and the installation debuted at the Dolby SoHo in New York City on Monday night, including a performance by the “Girl on Fire” singer.

“Show Me Love” is the first release from the singer’s upcoming seventh studio album.

6ix9ine Reveals Amount Paid To Gang, And How They Ruined A$AP Yams Day In 2018

(AllHipHop News) U.S. Marshals brought Tekashi to court today for his second day of testimony against two men who are being tried in a RICO case against members of the Nine Trey Gangstas.

Tekashi 6ix9ine has testified against Anthony Ellison and Aljermiah Mack, who are alleged members of the New York street gang.

The “Gummo” hitmaker revealed that he joined the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods gang and helped try to kill an opposing gang member.

Today, 6ix9ine exposed the gang’s internal structure.

“There was a godfather… twins… Five star general…Mel Murda was the godfather. Right under was Shotti… Seqo Billy was a five star,” Tekashi 6ix9ine testified.

He also declared he had to provide big kickbacks to the gang members in the prison lineup of the Nine Trey Gangstas.

“Say I would get $250,000, they would give me like $185,000 and take the rest. I was going shows, appearances, endorsements,” Tekashi 6ix9ine claimed.

6ix9ine said he never questioned what Shotti was doing with the money, which was being used to fund the gang’s operations.

“At first I didn’t ask any questions. Shotti was like, feed the wolves, feed the homies, support them,” the former rapper revealed.

6ix9ine also confessed to being involved in a huge brawl that erupted at a tribute concert for A$AP Yams in January of 2018, after initially denying any involvement.

The annual celebration/fundraiser for the A$AP Mob founder took place at the Bronx’s New York Expo Center but ended in chaos when a fight broke out and bats, as well as knives were used as weapons.

The “Gummo” performer posted a note on social media dismissing claims his crew was involved, but he admitted involvement on the stand today (September 18).

“No one knew that Shotti was part of my entourage, so security jumped him. We went to protect him, a huge brawl, people getting stabbed, hit with big sticks,” Tekashi 6ix9ine testified.

The rapper even fingered the gang member Billy Ado as the assailant who stabbed a security guard during the melee.

Yesterday, the musician spent almost two hours on the stand and testified that he became a member of the gang in November 2017, and participated in violent crimes including shootings, assaults and drug trafficking.

The rapper also identified the two defendants as gang members, as well as others in the gang who featured in his “Gummo” video.

He also gave evidence interpreting social media posts and direct messages related to alleged gang activity.

Tekashi testified he began cooperating with federal prosecutors shortly after his arrest in November 2018. He was looking at a minimum of 47 years in prison on gang-related racketeering charges before cutting the deal.

The 23-year-old claimed he never had a formal initiation into the gang, that he never personally shot anyone and his role was to keep making hits so he could bankroll the gang’s activities.

Federal prosecutors fear for the musician’s safety, so he’s being held behind bars in a facility filled with other cooperators.

Machine Gun Kelly Calls On Fans To Design His New Logo

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Machine Gun Kelly has asked his fans to design him a new logo.

The 29-year-old, real name Colson Baker, wants to ditch the branding used on his 2019 album Hotel Diablo, and has invited his Twitter followers to submit new artwork – promising a cash prize to the best design.

https://twitter.com/machinegunkelly/status/1173701644774772737

“F##k it, we’re in a new chapter,” he tweeted. “Got a (bag of money emoji) for which ever fan can design us a new “Machine Gun Kelly” logo. Submit to lo**@*******up.com.”

Fans were quick to offer their contributions – although some efforts were less serious than others – with some using the competition as an opportunity to joke about Kelly’s long-running feud with fellow rapper Eminem.

Rick Ross’ Mansion To Make An Appearance In The New “Coming2America”

(AllHipHop News) Rick Ross has landed himself a role in the Coming To America sequel after opening up his home to the cast and crew.

The rapper lives in the Georgia estate once owned by boxer Evander Holyfield, which was singled out as a location for Eddie Murphy’s new movie.

“They’re filming Coming to America 2 at the estate right now,” Ross told syndicated columnist Allison Kugel. “I have a small role and I did my first scene a few days ago.”

The fact that he’s rubbing shoulders with funnyman Murphy in his own home has made Rick realize he lives a grand life – and his kids know nothing of the hardships he faced growing up.

“It’s not an upbringing I would know about firsthand, and I’m pretty sure I would feel entitled if Eddie Murphy was walking around my dad’s home and ‘Coming to America 2’ was being filmed at my father’s estate,” he adds.

“As parents, we need to set examples because we have to let our children grow into what and who they are going to be. I really don’t put a lot of pressure on my kids, because they’re good students and they are very respectful of me and of everyone else around them. I’m allowing them to become young adults, and to decide what college they want to go to, what they want to be, what they want to do, how they want to do it, and where they want to do it. I’m pretty free about that.”

New Era Cap & Spike Lee Team Up For New York Yankees Championship Collection

(AllHipHop News) America is two weeks into the National Football League season, but many citizens of New York City are probably more interested in Major League Baseball right now. While both the NFL’s Giants and Jets are at the bottom of their respective standings with 0-2 records, the MLB’s Yankees are close to winning the team’s first American League East Division title since 2012.

With the Bronx Bombers heading to the 2019 playoffs, it seems like the perfect time for sports brand New Era Cap and renowned film director Spike Lee to unveil their New York Yankees Championship Collection. The line features 7 unique 59FIFTY designs that pay tribute to the Yanks’ 27 World Series championships.

“We are honored to work with Spike Lee on the New Era x Spike Lee New York Yankees Championship Collection, our largest combined collection to date, which celebrates the New York Yankees 27 World Series titles,” says Tim Shanahan, Director of Baseball at New Era Cap. ”The Yankees logo has become a symbol that extends beyond sports, into entertainment and culture, and this collection celebrates the team’s iconic status.”

As of September 18, the Yankees maintain a 99-53 record. The franchise’s magic number to clinch the AL East is down to 1. The Yankees can win the division with a victory against the Los Angeles Angels tonight with legendary pitcher CC Sabathia scheduled to take the mound.

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Ja Rule is planning to revisit his back catalog and shoot videos for every song.

The “Always On Time” hitmaker is revisiting every song he has ever released that wasn’t accompanied by a promo and filming a new video as part of an ambitious new project.

“I will be rereleasing ALL of my albums as visual albums,” he wrote on Twitter. “I will be making a video for every song I’ve ever made… what songs do y’all wanna see videos for?”

He then backtracked the statement and made it clear he was only talking about songs that don’t already have visuals.

That means Ja Rule will be filming over 40 new videos.

Andra Day, Trevante Rhodes & More To Star In Lee Daniels’ ‘The United States Vs. Billie Holiday’ Biopic

(AllHipHop News) Lee Daniels (Precious, The Butler) is set to tackle the biography of Jazz legend Eleanora “Billie Holiday” Fagan (1915-1959). The creator of the Fox television drama Empire will direct and produce a movie about the “Strange Fruit” singer.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday will feature Grammy-nominated musician Andra Day as the famous Lady Day. Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight, Bird Box), Garrett Hedlund (Four BrothersMudbound), and Natasha Lyonne (American PieOrange Is the New Black) are part of the cast as well.

“It is an extraordinary responsibility to tell the story of the iconic Billie Holiday. Her story is very personal to me and I hope to do justice when bringing to light this profound and complicated soul – a great artist and an unsung civil rights warrior,” states Daniels.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday is said to intimately examine the Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer’s struggles with addiction, fame, and heartbreaking love. While Holiday was helping to pioneer the Jazz genre, the Department of Narcotics targeted her for being outspoken about racism during the era of Jim Crow laws. A black federal agent named Jimmy Fletcher led the operation.

Holiday was eventually sentenced to a year in Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia for a drug possession conviction. She is quoted saying about the trial, “It was called ‘The United States of America versus Billie Holiday,’ and that’s just the way it felt.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) penned The United States vs. Billie Holiday script. The biopic was partially inspired by Johann Hari’s non-fiction book Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs.

Christopher Gunning is coming out of retirement to create the movie’s original score. Nas and Amy Winehouse collaborator Salaam Remi will serve as Executive Music Producer.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday is being produced by New Slate Ventures, Lee Daniels Entertainment, and Roth Kirschenbaum Films with Jordan Fudge, Lee Daniels, Pamela Oas Williams, and Tucker Tooley. Executive Producers include Hilary Shor, George Parra, Mark Bomback and Dennis Stratton.

The Supremes frontwoman Diana Ross starred in the 1972 movie Lady Sings the Blues which also covered the life of Billie Holiday. Director Sidney J. Furie’s motion picture earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress (Ross), Best Original Song Score, and Best Original Screenplay.
