EXCLUSIVE: “This or That” Q&A With Rockie Fresh

(AllHipHop News) In a new feature, AllHipHop is asking artists to take it back to the classic 1991 Black Sheep single “The Choice Is Yours” by deciding if they want to go with “this or that.”

In the first edition we tap Maybach Music Group’s youngest member Rockie Fresh. Now with the backing of a major label the Chicago-raised emcee has the ability to hit the studio regularly, and as a result he can choose to release music for his growing fanbase more often. After dropping the Electric Highway mixtape in January, Rockie is returning next week with his new project The Birthday Tape.

AHH sat down with the 22-year-old to get his picks on a few questions concerning his interests and other hot topics in Hip-Hop. The self-professed fan of the Chicago Bulls, Kanye West, rock music, and the Back to the Future franchise shares his choices in “This or That”.

Nicki Minaj To Star In New Cameron Diaz Movie

(AllHipHop News) Superstar Nicki Minaj is going from American Idol on the small screen to The Other Women on the silver screen. The Hollywood Reporter is confirming that the YMCMB performer is joining the cast of the revenge comedy directed by Nick Cassavetes (John Q, Alpha Dog). This will be Minaj’s first live action feature film role.

The film centers around Cameron Diaz as a married man’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) unsuspecting mistress. She decides to join forces with the cheater’s wife (Leslie Mann) to get back at the unfaithful husband. Kate Upton plays another side chick who takes part in the t##-for-tat too.

Nicki plays Diaz’s assistant. She previously lent her voice for 2012’s animated picture Ice Age: Continental Drift.

The Queens, New York native has revealed in the past that she has a serious interest in acting. She began performing in plays in grade school. She went on to participate in the drama program at the famous Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

Minaj is not leaving the music world completely. She has not started recording for her third album yet, but she told MTV that she has been reviewing tracks for the LP.

“I’m getting beats as we speak, I just haven’t started writing as of yet, but [the music’s] my biggest priority obviously,” said Nicki.

Lauryn Hill Writes Letter Explaining Her Situation From Taxes To New Record Deal

(AllHipHop News) Lauryn Hill’s personal and financial life have once again become the subject of much discussion and scrutiny by the public. There have been reports about her taxes woes, her living arrangements and a new record deal that should produce a new album.

But, the singer maintains that there is much to explain and so she has written an open letter revealing her side partially. She says that some of the dollar amounts surrounding a new deal with Sony are inaccurate, in addition to offering context to the deal based on the units she’s sold in her illustrious career.

The letter is below:

It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.

I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.

It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.

The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me).

Only a completely complicated set of traps, manipulations, and inequitable business arrangements could put someone who has accomplished the things that I have, financially in need of anything. I am one artist who finds value in openly discussing the dynamics within this industry that force artists to compromise or distort themselves and what they do, rather than allowing them to make the music that people need. There are volumes that could (and will) be said.

Is There A Conspiracy Against Hip-Hop?

Without question, Hip-Hop is one of the most revolutionary art forms created. But, in 2013 the music has become void of the political promise it once held in the Golden 80’s and 90’s. Some, with an almost violent fervor, have maintained that there is an over, concerted conspiracy against Hip-Hop.
