BET & Centric Bring Out The Stars For The 2015 Soul Train Awards

The Soul Train Awards is one of the biggest nights in R&B and Soul! BET & Centric celebrated and honored R&B legends and soul music’s brightest new stars once again at this year’s Soul Train Awards, which taped in Las Vegas on Friday, November 6. The soulful and comedic Erykah Badu hosted the night’s festivities, which included performances from Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Brandy, R. Kelly, Jeremih, Fantasia, Cameo, Tyrese, Boyz II Men, After 7, Lion Babe, Jazmine Sullivan, Erica Campbell, Tevin Campbell, V. Bozeman, and more.

Badu slid with ease between amazing songstress and comedic host. She also “banned” all Hip Hop this year to focus solely on the celebration of Soul music! She opened with some of her classic hits, including “Danger,” “On & On,” and “Love Of My Life.” A fan favorite moment was BET/ Centric’s “Soul Cypher” which mirrored the BET Hip Hop Awards cyphers, and featured Badu as the DJ with vocalists K-Ci Hailey, Lalah Hathaway, Chrisette Michelle, and Eddie Levert.

One of the greatest and most prolific songwriters of our time, the legendary 11x Grammy Award-Winning Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, was honored with the Legend Award and an all star tribute which included many of the stars (listed above) he wrote hits for! Soulful songstress Jill Scott was awarded with the first-ever Lady of Soul Award as well. Babyface looked sharp in his tailored suit as he took a seat at a baby grand piano and proceeded to bring out stars that he had written hits for his tribute. After accepting his legend award, he closed the set with a performance of his hit “Whip Appeal.”

Jill Scott was honored with the ‘Lady of Soul’ Award with a special tribute video from industry’s top executives and artists such as Whoopi Goldberg, Usher, and more! Scott then serenaded the audience with her hits “Back Together,” “Long Walk,” “It’s Love,” “Golden,” “Cross My Mind,” and “Whatever.”

Jazmine Sullivan performed her hit “Let It Burn.” To pay homage, she brought out After 7 to perform their classic hit “Ready Or Not” as Sullivan’s “Let It Burn” sampled it. Erica Campbell took all in attendance to church as she performed her hit single “A Little More Jesus.” Campbell’s performance had the crowd on their feet.

Cameo broke it all the way down with their hits “Candy”, “Word Up,” and more. Comedian G Thang held it down in between sets as he entertained the audience by calling out known singers as well as up and coming acts to give the audience vocal snippets on the mic. Tank, Shaniece and more touched the mic and sent the audience into cheers.

The King of R&B himself, R. Kelly, closed the show with a soulful “block party” on stage as he performed a medley of his hits which included “Bump N Grind,” “Ignition (Remix),” “Your Body’s Callin’ Me,” and many more! The King undeniably has hits for days!

Before all of the show action, AllHipHop.com’s Rea Davis caught up with Avant, MC Lyte, Bridget Kelly, Jazmine Sullivan, After 7, Silento, and more, to discuss who they were most excited to see perform and what they were currently working on. Check out our video recap below.

The show will air on Centric and BET tomorrow Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 8PM ET/PT.

A-Trak May Have Hinted A Frank Ocean Song Dropping Soon

There is a possible chance that we will hear at least one Frank Ocean song in the next couple of weeks. A recent report on P&P has stated that A-Trak may have tweeted about a new song from the elusive singer. The Fool’s Gold Founder recently posted on his timeline earlier about a song titled “White Ferrari.” A-Trak didn’t actually say that the song was by the New Orleans singer, but a recent post on Kanye To The included the same title in a story about one of Ocean’s cousins.

According to the report, there were other bystanders who indirectly spoke out about Frank Oceans album Boys Don’t Cry as well. One of them happen to be a printer from London.

There hasn’t been any official word on whether Frank Ocean’s album will drop this year or nah. The singer told every one that Boys Don’t Cry would drop in July this year. Unfortunately, Ocean didn’t release anything, and it made black twitter extremely mad.

Kendrick Lamar Continues Lyrical Excellence With “Black Friday”

WELL-PLAYED, KENDRICK. The Compton, CA lyrical beast drops a new song “Black Friday.” Well the song is rooted in the J. Cole song of the same name. Nevertheless, Kendrick ravages the track dropping lines about The White House, Donald Trump, to being a god MC, Adele.

Swizz Beatz Announces Three-Day Concert And Art Series At Art Basel

Swizz Beatz will host a three-day concert and art series in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach in December to give upcoming musicians and artists a chance to showcase their work, Billboard reports. There will also be performances by his wife Alicia Keys, DMX, Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T and more.

The three-day event, Casa Bacardi at Wynwood, will run from Dec. 3-5 and be curated by The Dean Collection. One of the events will the No Commission Art Fair, where artists will display their work for free and take home all the proceeds from the art fair. There will also be a concert each night, the Bacardi Untameable House Party. The art fair is free and will be open to the public and the concert series is free with a RSVP.

“It’s by the artist, for the artist, with the people,” Swizzy told Billboard. “And I think a lot of people forgot the message of why they’re even going down to Basel. You’re going down to Basel because there are amazing, creative artists who took a lot of time out of their lives to put together some masterpieces and hope for entry in a great collection or for somebody to be inspired. And not taking anything away from Basel or from the galleries, but I just chose to do something different. And I think the world needs more powerful collaborations that are willing to push the envelope and not really follow the necessary rules that are laid out.”

Lil’ Scrappy Facing Eviction From Georgia Home

Lil’ Scrappy has been hit with a lawsuit for not paying his rent, Bossip reports.

Randy Williams of the Williams Property Group filed the lawsuit against the Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta star, who reportedly owes $4,022 in back rent, utility bills, court costs. His monthly rent for his five bedroom Georgia home is $3,000. If the ATL rapper doesn’t pay up, he faces being evicted.

Williams claims that the matter is close to being settled by the court. Scrappy has not commented on the matter.

Williams also filed a lawsuit against Scrap back in January, which was also over unpaid rent. Scrappy also had a home foreclosed in 2010 after not making payments.

REVIEW: Jasiri X’s “Black Liberation Theology” Invites Listeners To An Audio Revolution

Jasiri X is one of the most celebrated rappers of the present day. Why? The man has stepped out time and time again, risking his wealth, health and well-being to fight for the people. Even when the people don’t think they need it, true freedom fighters battle on. On his latest project, Jasiri X comes with his hardest project to date – Black Liberation Theology. Listening the project suggests that the Pittsburgh native is increasingly more impatient with the American injustice system. The maddening police coverup over the murder of LaQuan McDonald in Chicago immediately comes to mind. Oh, but there are so many more victims from Tamir Rice, a 12-year old slain by police, to Eric Garner, a Black man killed in New York, to Oscar Grant in the Bay. Jasiri X encapsulates the frustration that’s boiling in Black America and he brings some friends with him. David Banner jumps on “Black Liberation Theology Part 1.” Tef Poe, Haze Cloud, Abhaollow, Blak Rapp Madusa, Idasa Tariq, Jordan Montgomery, King Legion and others also appear on Black Liberation Theology. The highlight may just be Jasiri and Rhymefest trading bars on “Christis,” and they ponder about if Jesus came back to us today. Black Liberation is rock solid and far more than a “positive” album. It addresses pertinent issues, asks questions, invites outsiders and forces the listener to think. Jasiri has taken his own art to another plane, likely a sad side-affect of increasingly troubling time. If there is a soundtrack to the realities of the day, this is it.
