Slip-N-Slide CEO Ted Lucas Explains How He Built SuperFest Into Miami’s Biggest Festival

Ted Lucas describes himself as a “real Miami boy raised up on that Luke Records.”

Immediately, the Miami native starts singing “get it get it, don’t stop get it get it.”

Born and raised in the city of Miami Gardens, home to the University of Miami who used to kick everybody’s butt in football.

Miami Gardens is where Ted’s culture was born, right in the heart of 305. He went on to create the independent music label Slip-N-Slide Records, home to Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, Plies, DJ Khaled, and Pitbull.

The well-respected imprint has sold over 25 million records and counting. For the past 15 years, Ted as continued to be a force to be reckoned with in the music business, leading up to this year’s Super Bowl LIV on February 2nd in Miami.

Now, his SuperFest Miami LIVE joins forces with Vewtopia Music Festival for creating a family-friendly festival for all those in town.

The fan village will highlight Miami’s culture, food, and music scene, concerts, a family carnival, and 14 hours of live performances and interactive experiences.

AllHipHop caught up with Ted Lucas who was in Miami directly across the street from Hard Rock Stadium, looking at the Super Bowl being prepared and put together.

He jokes about the rain in Los Angeles: “‘It Never Rains (In Southern California),’ that’s what Tony! Toni! Toné! told me.”

AllHipHop: What are your Super Bowl predictions this coming Sunday?

Ted Lucas: Because you’re [Shirley Ju] from the West Coast, I’ma go with the 49’ers. I think they’re a well-coached, well-put-together team. On offense or defense, they’re a pretty strong team. You want to come with your A-game. The other team is a great team as well, but they really need to come with their A team.

AllHipHop: We hear there’s some breaking business news with your SuperFest business. What’s going on?

Ted Lucas: We did a merge similar to as if Microsoft and Apple merged together. In the last 24 hours here in festivals, we put two festivals and put them together — and used the city of Miami Gardens. Ryan is my business partner, he’ll tell you.

Ryan Bert: My name’s Ryan Bert, the founder of VEW Live! We’re a concert promotional company across the country. I’m looking forward to working with Lucas on this amazing project we have going on here. Some of the biggest artists in the country: Chris Brown, Migos, Cardi B, Megan The Stallion, DaBaby, Nicky Jam just to name a few. Really excited.

Ted Lucas: He’s Vewtopia and I’m SuperFest. There was a merge today that took place. He was doing his festival at another location, I was doing mine at another location. Today, we could come together. Make a little noise today and let people know where they need to be when they come in town for the Super Bowl.

AllHipHop: That Superfest lineup is crazy!

Ted Lucas: Definitely. Ryan has a vision and idea on what he really wanted to do. He’s the one who came and said: “we need Chris Brown on Friday, Cardi B on Saturday.” He put two great amazing lineups together. Megan Thee Stallion and Gunna on Friday, Ty Dolla $ign on Friday. For Saturday, we end it with Cardi B, Migos, DaBaby, Nicky Jam, and Plies.

AllHipHop: What do you want people to know about your city Miami Gardens?

Ted Lucas: This is what I want people to understand: when you come to Miami for the Super Bowl, it’s bigger than South Beach. Everybody knows about South Beach. It’s a beautiful city called Miami Garden, and there’s a reason why they have the stadium in Miami Gardens. Because Miami Gardens is the home of the Super Bowl. It’s a beautiful city and it’s dead center. People who live in West Palm Beach or the tip of Miami, it’s the center place in Miami. A central location where everybody comes at. We have people from all over South Florida coming to one location. We want the tourists to come out and enjoy the festival, get a chance to experience the culture.

AllHipHop: What was it like growing up there?

Ted Lucas: Growing up here, it was a little rough. You hear the story from everyone: “it was rough, it was rough.” It definitely wasn’t easy growing up here. Our heroes were drug dealers, not going to lie to you. Those people who had the nice cars, they weren’t only eating bologna sandwiches. They were able to have good meals. They’d come back into the city and inspire people. Then you had guys making out our community playing football, so those were our two outs. When I was growing up, you were either going to be a pro-football player and if that didn’t work, you’re going to turn around and become a drug dealer.

The reason I’m here doing this festival in the streets of Miami Gardens is I want kids to know that there’s more to life than resorting to crime or putting all your eggs in one basket and going to play football. What we’re doing here now is we got these kids from all those local schools come by to see a black entrepreneur like Ryan and myself put this festival together. They would never imagine two young men came together to put a great festival together with a lineup like this.

AllHipHop: How has it changed from now to today?

Ted Lucas: When I was first growing up in this city, it wasn’t no nice streets. It wasn’t no nice palm trees, it was just a stadium and everybody was broke around the stadium. They gon’ put this nice stadium in the city, you go one block down and you’re in the projects. That’s how it was when I first grew up but now, the whole city is beautiful.

When my grandma first moved over there, she paid $15,000 for her house. But now grandma’s house is worth about $315,000, so that’s how much the property value has went up. It was a great investment. The property value went up because we got a beautiful mayor, Oliver Gilbert, and commissioner, Barbara Jordan, who understand a young man like me. Understand my vision and support me, allow me to come back and do something in my city to provide.

AllHipHop: How do events like Rolling Loud impact your business during the year?

Ted Lucas: Man, business is good. You get people from all around the world that come. Before it was just a stadium and it was good for 8 months when the football season was going on. When football season closed, you still have places like Rolling Loud who comes in and throws a 3-day festival. You see hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people walking up and down your street. Well, years ago they would’ve gotten in trouble trying to walk down the street. They would’ve gotten robbed, so they’re in a good nice beautiful environment. It’s safe, and they have a great time. We have one of the best urban festivals in the world, Jazz in the Garden. For us, SuperFest is just the home of festivals.

AllHipHop: What made you pivot from label to event production?

Ted Lucas: I started off with a concert, that’s what motivated me to do events like this. My first entry to the music business was a concert where I brought in that guy that people got a lot of problems with right now, because of what he did to a young lady. I brought that guy down here and did a concert with him. My first real concert with my partner and R.Kelly sold out the venue.

I was 19 years old and made $20,000 that night. I knew right then that taste was the best feeling I had, better than playing football. I never had a feeling like that. Scoring a touchdown was good but you’re 19 years old and you just made $20,000 dollars, legit. My grandma told me I had to go get a job, so that’s where my whole thing started from is doing the first concert with R. Kelly. Ryan says it’s a legal great business for young black men to get into. [chuckles]

AllHipHop: What’s the greatest lesson learned from the music industry?

Ted Lucas: Don’t never give up on your dream. Work just as hard as you did to make it, every day you get up. Because the day you get lazy, there’s somebody out there ready to take your spot. What it took to get on top, every day you get up, you have to do the same thing again. The day you lay in bed a little bit longer, somebody’s working to get that#1 spot.

AllHipHop: Top 5 dead or alive?

Ted Lucas: Biggie and Tupac, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and Jay Z.

AllHipHop: How has the new streaming and social media era affected hip-hop?

Ted Lucas: I love the new streaming and the way it affected hip hop. You know why? I’m doing this interview with you right now right, there’s somebody in Japan streaming my record right now. There’s somebody in Germany streaming my record right now. When I get off work tonight at about 3 o’clock in the morning, I’ma go home, take a shower, and go to bed. You know what’s happening while I’m in bed, somebody’s streaming my record while I’m sleeping. There’s nothing better than that. It’s the new version of the stock market, but it never closes.

AllHipHop: What’s the latest with Slip-N-Slide?

Ted Lucas: Got a female artist by the name of Teenear, she has a beautiful record right now called “Need Your Love.” She’s going to be on SuperFest, and has a couple more appearances for the SuperBowl as well. Got a new young man called F$O Dinero, he has a great personality. When I looked at them, I see people I wanted to be a partner with. Because they aren’t just my artists, they’re really my business partners. I try to bless them, to be a blessing onto this family. I’m excited to be in business with him.

Another artist named Mike Smith, definitely got the down South swag about him. I’m excited about that. Plies got a record out right now called “Boss Friends” with him and DaBaby. Sebastian Mikael, he has a record called “Time.” When you get with your significant other, I want you to play that “Time” record and set the atmosphere right.

AllHipHop: Anything else you want to let us know?

Ted Lucas: Thank you for this opportunity. One thing: when people come in town for the Super Bowl, you got to come to the #1 festival of the year! Vewtopia with SuperFest in the city of Miami Gardens.

Offset Addresses Being Detained At LA Shopping Center

(AllHipHop News) Yesterday, news broke that Migos member Offset was taken into custody after law enforcement was tipped to a gun-related incident at The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles. It appears officers detained the wrong person.

Offset spoke to the media once he was released from the police station. According to the 28-year-old rhymer, the situation was a case of mistaken identity.

“It’s good. We fixed it up. It ain’t nothing. It wasn’t me. It was the wrong man,” Offset told paparazzi. “I was treated fairly, no cap. They had to do that. Something happened. I don’t know. It wasn’t me though. I’m good.”

The FaZe Clan investor added, “I’m just mad it touched the media like that. I was upset because I ain’t do nothing. I didn’t know what was going on. I’m good though.”

This week, Offset also appeared on Fox Sports 1’s Skip and Shannon: Undisputed live from Miami, Florida. He talked about Migos’ upcoming Culture III album, Super Bowl LIV, the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young, the tragic loss of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, and more.

OVO Sound’s official Soundcloud page posted a Future and Drake track titled “Desires.” After the release, the rap stars’ names became two of the Top 10 trending topics on Twitter.

“Desires” and “Life Is Good” have led to more speculation from OVO and Freebandz fans that a sequel to 2015’s What A Time to Be Alive is on the way.

The original commercial mixtape debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 375,000 units. What A Time to Be Alive hosted songs such as “Digital Dash” and “Jumpman.”

YouTube’s Lyor Cohen Does A Grand Deed For Hip-Hop Homie!

(AllHipHop Rumors) Lyor Cohen has been called everything from a culture vulture to a genius business mind. I often find it hard to decide what he is, but he has been around a very long time and has been instrumental in the best times that Hip-Hop has had. Most people talk about his time with Def Jam or something Dame Dash has to say. But he also worked with Run DMC in a variety of ways that helped the seminal rap group blow up!

“Well,” you may ask, “What did Lyor do that was so great?” Sadly, one of Run DMC’s closest friends died recently. A dude by the name of Runny Ray died this week. Runny Ray was not extremely well-known, but he was well-loved. Apparently, Lyor loved him too. Runny Ray was a roadie for Run DMC when they were at their height and stayed in good standing with that “family” of The Hollis Crew (Run DMC’s Crew). I am hearing that Runny Ray had some sort of terminal illness, but I don’t know what that was.

I was told that Lyor was by his side when he passed away so that he was not alone when he slipped into hospice. I gotta say that, if it is true, is a very dope and selfless act from a dude people consider to be a staunch, cold businessman. I suddenly have yet another point of consideration for one Lyor Cohen.

SALUTE LYOR AND REST IN PEACE RUNNY RAY!

By the way, Runny Ray made a guest appearance in the Run DMC movie, “Tougher Than Leather.”

Ludacris Tunes Up A High-School Band With Generous Donation

(AllHipHop News) Rap star Ludacris is one of hip-hop’s most beloved rappers, known for his witty lyricism and acting, as well as his charitable works.

The Atlanta rap star opped into Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School yesterday (January 29th), to encourage and inspire hundreds of students during a visit.

The “Fast and Furious” star explained the importance music has played in his career as a rapper who has sold over 24 million records worldwide throughout his career.

To make his point and prove his dedication to the local community, Ludacris surprised the students with $75,000 worth of brand new instruments.

“We have instruments being held together with tape, they don’t move, they’re banged up,” band director Kevin Segura told NBC6. “These instruments are going to improve our sound and going to motivate kids to want to do band so hopefully I can build up this program to what it once was back in the day.”

For almost two decades now, Ludacris, born Christopher Bridges, has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of teens since the founding of The Ludacris Foundation in 2001.

Each year Ludacris presides over a celebrity golf tournament, as well as his legendary LudaDay Weekend, which raises money to fund programs to provide resources, experiences, and tools for at-risk teens.

Kim & Kanye Hope A Sex Doctor Will Save Their Marriage!

(AllHipHop Rumors) According to rumors, Kim and Kanye have sought out a sex doctor to salvage their marriage.

Reports say that they have had counseling in the past and it helped so the couple is hopeful it will aide in their issues again.

An insider explains how they have sessions at least once a week and the therapist is giving them suggestions to put the flames back in their marriage.

Kim has supposedly hired a team of therapists specifically for Kanye.

These therapists would be on call 24/7 when he was touring because she was stressed about his history of mood swings and manic episodes.

Neither have commented on either matters and I doubt they ever will.

Kelis Claims Pharrell And Chad Hugo Stole Her Publishing

(AllHipHop News) Kelis has claimed she was “blatantly lied to” and “tricked” by The Neptunes production partners, Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo and made nothing from her first two albums.

The production duo, known as The Neptunes, met Kelis through a mutual friend when she was 19, and took on producing Kaleidoscope in 1999, Wanderland in 2001 and some tracks on her 2003 album Tasty.

But in an interview with Britain’s The Guardian newspaper, the 40-year-old star alleged she was left out of pocket after being “blatantly lied to and tricked” by “The Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff.”

“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” she said, adding that she didn’t initially notice the lack of funds because she was bringing in some money from touring and “just the fact that I wasn’t poor felt like enough.”

“Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it.’ I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it,” Kelis continued.

The singer went on to insist she’s not angry about the situation, crediting her lifestyle on a farm in America for helping her take on a new outlook on life.

“To be honest with you, I think if it were not for my faith, I feel like that would probably be the case. It’s very clear to me, especially being on a farm, that whatever you put in the ground, that is what’s going to come back to you,” she mused.

When it came to the production of her third album, Tasty, Kelis went with a variety of different producers due to her issues with The Neptunes.

But she has seen Pharrell again since then – at an industry event where he was performing and she was in the audience.

“He did that thing to me that he’s notorious for, which is making a nod from the stage (to someone in the audience), so it seems like there’s mutual respect, when in reality…” she laughed. “I’m like, OK, I’m not going to yell back: ‘You stole all my publishing!’ So you end up nodding back and everyone thinks everything’s great. Like, whatever.”

However, when asked if she’d ever work with Pharrell again, Kelis insisted: “Ummm, at that point there’s having faith and there is also just stupidity.”

Fetty Wap’s Lawyers Earning Their Money; Valet Assault Case Dismissed

(AllHipHop News) Fetty Wap scored another legal victory this week when a judge tossed charges against him over a brawl with a valet at Las Vegas hotel.

In October of 2019, Fetty Wap has hit with an assault charge for beating up a valet during an angry confrontation at The Mirage hotel.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department hit Fetty with one count of misdemeanor battery.

On Monday, Fetty Wap accepted an agreement with prosecutors in the case, who agreed to drop the charges if the Patterson, New Jersey rapper can stay out of trouble.

Earlier this week, Fetty Wap beat a case in Los Angeles, after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office found “insufficient evidence” to convict him for allegedly roughing up a woman during a fight in a Hollywood Hills mansion in June of 2019.

Judge Accuses R. Kelly Of Using Prison Staff’s Phone To Target Witnesses

(AllHipHop News) R. Kelly’s request to disclose the identities of two women accusing him of sexual abuse was denied by a judge on Wednesday (January 29th).

The singer was arrested last year on a 13-count federal indictment for sexual abuse in Chicago, while he is also facing a racketeering and sex trafficking trial in New York.

Earlier this month, R. Kelly’s lawyers filed a demand to unmask two women making allegations against the singer – who are each listed as ‘Jane Doe’ in the court papers.

Jane Doe No. 2 claims that she and Kelly had sex in 1999, when she was 16 years old, while Jane Doe No. 3 has alleged Kelly kept her locked in a bedroom in a Chicago recording studio for three days without food, and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious.

However, in her ruling, Brooklyn Federal Judge Ann Donnelly explained she had rejected the request after prosecutors had “substantiated” that the singer can interfere with his case from prison.

The prosecution team referred to “instances in which the defendant has circumvented prison protocols to communicate with third parties, including by abusing the legal mail system and using a prison staff member’s telephone” in their argument, Donnelly wrote.

But Kelly’s defense attorney Steve Greenberg argued the singer “simply has no means or method by which to engage in any obstructive conduct.”

He also said that he and his team are unable to “adequately prepare for trial without knowing who each of the supposed ‘victims’ are.”

The prosecution team stated in court papers that they will reveal the identities of the accusers two weeks before the trial begins.

R. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to all allegations.

A$AP Ferg Talks Kobe Bryant’s Passing & Working With Kanye West

(AllHipHop News) A$AP Ferg returned this week with the HighDefRazjah-produced single “Value.” The A$AP Mob member spoke to Zane Lowe on Apple Music about the song, an upcoming collaboration album, Kanye West, and the untimely death of NBA icon Kobe Bryant.

“I was supposed to actually fly into LA the day he passed away and actually go to Calabasas. He died in the area of the studio I was supposed to go to, so it was a damper. Some people, we just don’t picture passing. I just didn’t know he would go or even go in that way. God bless him and his family,” said Ferg about Bryant dying in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

In addition, the NYC-bred rapper revealed that he is creating a joint project with one of the “biggest producers in the whole world.” A$AP Ferg did not reveal the name of the beatmaker, but he did talk about working with production genius Kanye West on new music.

“I’ve actually been in the studio with Kanye for the last three days. It’s been good.  When I was going to Calabasas, that’s who I was working with. It’s been amazing to see his journey and to see this new person he’s becoming, and just kind of being able to assist him with that,” the self-described Hood Pope told Lowe. “[We’re] just making music and just having a lot of conversation. We talk most of the time. Sometimes we go to the studio and just talk.”

Ferg added, “If it wasn’t for Kanye and Pharrell being in Hip Hop, I would probably know how to do it, but they showed me how to just fully immerse in yourself and be yourself. We never seen anybody do it in a different way besides those guys in my generation, so they inspired me. We just have conversations about that, and me going to his studio where he creates all his mock-ups and shoes. He’s working on his couture line. I’m immersed in his world. That’s what I want to take it to. That’s the level that I aspire to take it to, so it’s crazy. It’s an amazing experience.”

Soulja Boy Faces Lawsuit For Allegedly Pistol-Whipping & Kidnapping A Woman

(AllHipHop News) DeAndre Cortez Way (aka Soulja Boy) has mostly been laying low since his release from jail in 2019. The “Crank That” hitmaker is actually preparing to take part in Omarion & Bow Wow’s “Millennium Tour 2020”

Before he can hit the road, Soulja Boy is now reportedly facing an assault & battery, false imprisonment, and sexual battery lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court. An article published by The Blast claims an unidentified woman is accusing SB of striking her in the head with a gun, stomping on her stomach, and ordering her to be tied up.

The woman was also supposedly sexually assaulted by another person inside of Soulja’s house. According to legal documents, the alleged incident took place in February 2019 during an on-again/off-again 4-year romantic relationship between the alleged victim and Way.

Details of the suit include the woman accusing Soulja Boy of threatening to kill her, forcing her to take a shower while he watched, and instructing his assistant to tie her up with duct tape. She also contends that she was pressed to perform oral sex on another man in order to escape the garage where she was being held.

The woman apparently filed a police report about the incident and was taken to the hospital at the time. She was said to have suffered three fractured ribs and a facial contusion.

Last April, Soulja Boy was sentenced to 240 days in jail for violating his probation. The ruling came after law enforcement officers discovered ammunition in his California residence. Reportedly, police searched his home that month in connection to an allegation he held a woman captive in his garage.

Did Offset Deny Any Involvement In A Gun-Related Incident At The Grove?

(AllHipHop News) Offset has found his name in countless headlines this morning. The Migos member was reportedly forcibly detained by police officers in LA’s The Grove shopping center.

TMZ published cellphone footage of a man that resembles Offset yelling at cops. According to the outlet, Set and three other individuals were taken to the station for further questioning after law enforcement recovered two guns at the scene. No official arrests were made.

However, Offset appears to be claiming that at least some aspects of the reports are inaccurate. The rapper born Kiari Kendrell Cephus wrote on DJ Akademiks’ Instagram page, “Nah I’m out person mistakes us.”

Offset later added a message to his Instagram Story that seemed to be a response to the news that he was taken into police custody. The short video of his jewelry included the caption, “The devil is a lie I’m covered by the blood of Jesus.”

Correction: A previous version of this article referred to Offset’s comment as a deleted Instagram caption. The statement was actually left on DJ Akademiks’ Instagram page.

Los Angeles Lakers Release A Statement About The Death Of Kobe & Gianna Bryant

(AllHipHop News) NBA players and fans continue to mourn the death of 41-year-old Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, and the seven other victims of a tragic helicopter crash that took place on January 26. The Los Angeles Lakers organization has now released a statement about Kobe’s passing.

The team posted the following message on its verified Instagram account:

We are devastated and have been forever changed by the sudden loss of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. We send our love to Vanessa, the Bryant family, and to the families of the other passengers. Words cannot express what Kobe means to the Los Angeles Lakers, our fans, and our city. More than a basketball player, he was a beloved father, husband, and teammate. Their love and light will remain in our hearts forever.
The Mamba Sports Foundation has set up the MambaOnThree Fund to support the families affected by this tragedy. To help, please visit MambaOnThree.org. For those who are inspired to continue Kobe and Gianna’s legacy in youth sports, please visit MambaSportsFoundation.org.

Kobe played for the Lakers for 20 seasons. He won five NBA championships, 2 NBA Finals MVP Awards, and 1 NBA Most Valuable Player Award. The basketball legend also known as Black Mamba was selected for 18 All-Star games and won the All-Star Game MVP Award four times.
