(AllHipHop News) Jewish rapper Lil Dicky used the cash gifts from his bar mitzvah to kickstart his music career.
The “Freaky Friday” hitmaker came into a lot of money when he turned 13, but his frugal parents refused to let him have the loot until he was more mature.
“Finally, when I was, like, a 23-year old I thought, ‘What am I gonna spend my money on?'” the hitmaker, real name Dave Burd, tells Good Morning America. “I actually used my bar mitzvah money to finance my rap career.
“They (parents) were pretty anti (the idea). I said, ‘What am I gonna do? When I’m 28, buy a couch with this money? Why wouldn’t I pursue my dreams?’
“I think rap was a curveball for them… that I knocked outta the park.”
The big spend paid off and now Burd is launching his own TV show, based on his life as the most unlikely rapper.
He admits a lot of the crazy things on the show, Dave, are based on his real life.
“I happen to be in the position where my life is very naturally entertaining,” he adds. “I’m a rapper and I go on tour and rap in front of thousands of people but then, at the same time, when I record, my nose is too stuffed. It’s the juxtaposition of those two worlds.”
(AllHipHop Rumors) Afrika Bambaataa is a pioneer of this thing of ours – Hip-Hop. He is on Mount Rushmore – period. But the legend had some very foul; rumors and accusations about him. Hassan Campbell is one of the many people that accused Afrika Bambaataa of molestation, along with activist Ronald Savage. Well, Hassan Campbell says, “Lets get it poppin’!”
Now, Hassan Campbell and Ronald Savage have shared experiences, but Hass had been far more vocal in a general sense of the word. Now, something set him off. He is looking to take Afrika Bambaataa to “court” and hit him up legally. Because some have said “this is snitching,” Hass has not previously gone the legal route. But, I think it seems like he is now, because he is a law-abiding citizen now.
“Now, I am going to go to court and I am going to enjoy this sh#t,” he said. “Because at the end of the day, Bam got that bag. Bam got that bag and I believe he paid Ron Savage off. And now the only threat he has to him is me. Ron is silent.” Maybe that explains some stuff. (I am watching this video and wa writing at the same time, by the way.)
He talks directly to Bam saying he wants a new car (a BMW) and some money. One thing I am clear about, if this man was white or a woman, people would care. Since he was a young Black male when he was allegedly molested, very little comes out of it. Also, his demeanor is not “weak” in the way other victims are portrayed. Notice I mentioned “portrayed,” so I am not saying they are actually weak.
Now, there is some stuff in this video where Hass appears to implicate Bam on a murder that he went to jail for. I am not sure exactly what he is talking about. But he dares Bam and his “soldiers” to come get him. I can only imagine he is talking about the Zulu Nation, which is known internationally as a positive organization. Hass does not mince his words in this video – not a bit.
This is about to get very interesting, especially if it gets to court.
(AllHipHop News) Back in February, Lil Wayne was revealed as The Robot on the season 3 premiere of The Masked Singer. Weezy was recently asked about his involvement with the popular Nick Cannon-hosted singing competition.
“I am a fan of the show. I’ve been watching since the first episode. Because of the first episode, when it came on, I knew it was T-Pain. So that made me watch every episode,” Lil Wayne told MTV.
He continued, “Because of that I told Mack [Maine], ‘Call them, let them know I’m a huge fan.’ I wanted to get Nicki [Minaj] on there. I was like, ‘Tell them I would love to get Nicki on there.’ It came back like, ‘Man, they want you on there.'”
Minaj has a history with starring on competitive reality shows from the other side of the table. She served as a judge on American Idol. The “Yikes” rapper also made guest appearances on America’s Next Top Model, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and other programs.
Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” collaborator T-Pain (as the Monster) won the first season of the American version of The Masked Singer. Actor/comedian Wayne Brady (as the Fox) was named the champion in season two. The current season has included Drew Carey, Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Palin, and other celebrities.
(AllHipHop News) With the NBA suspending its season and legendary actor Tom Hanks announcing he tested positive, more people across the country are now taking the coronavirus more seriously. Hip Hop stars are no exception.
For example, Cardi B expressed her fear of COVID-19 with her 60 million Instagram followers. Emcee-turned-podcaster Joe Budden has also offered his thoughts on the growing global pandemic with an IG post.
Budden uploaded a photo of himself in a pool while holding his cellphone. The picture’s caption reads, “Just checking to make sure you good, it’s getting crazy out there… the NBA suspended all its games, the same way I should have when I was with you.. be safe, I love you.”
That quote was clearly meant to be taken as a tongue-in-cheek joke about an ex-girlfriend which is on-brand for the media personality. Budden’s most recent run on Love & Hip Hop: New York includes him having to deal with the fallout from his former relationships with castmates Cyn Santana and Tahiry Jose.
DaBaby’s attorney, Drew Findling, informedTMZ that Tyronesha is not the person seen getting hit in the viral video. Findling said multiple people contacted his law firm but the identity of the real victim has not been established.
On Saturday, DaBaby struck a woman after she apparently pushed a cellphone into his face as he walked through the crowd inside Whiskey North. Laws insisted she was not the individual with the phone and DaBaby hit her for no reason.
Findling apparently has enhanced video footage that proves Laws is lying. Tyronesha said she was standing next to the woman with the cellphone, but DaBaby’s lawyer contends the phone carrier was the actual person that got slapped.
DaBaby eventually apologized for his part in the violent encounter. After his mea culpa, the North Carolina native faced more backlash for appearing in a skit with comedian Michael Blackson that made fun of the slapping situation.
(AllHipHop News) After calling himself a “wack rapper” on Everyday Struggle, Waka Flocka Flame had his fans scratching their heads and Hip Hop purists nodding their heads. However, he did walk back that statement.
While appearing on RapUpTV with his wife, Tammy Rivera, Waka claimed his “wack rapper” comments were a form of “reverse psychology.” The “No Hands” performer also declared he is one of the greatest of all time that can handle himself on the mic when he is in his own musical lane.
“I be sitting here like, ‘Yo, Hip Hop never sounded like this before me. Who’s more influential than that? Alright, cool I’m a wack rapper, I guess.’ Let me say I’m wack just so y’all can actually hear people say, ‘No, this guy’s actually the GOAT – one of the GOATs.’ I’m not trying to say I’m the GOAT. I’m actually sitting next to them by default,” said Waka.
The What The Flockastar added, “I’m a wack rapper compared to the people I look up to. Let’s be real. If me, Nas, and KRS-One get on a track, who’s gonna have the wackest verse? I’m a realest. I’m real to myself, but if they get on an 808 beat, I’m gonna annihilate them. That’s when a wack rapper wins.”
(AllHipHop News) Drake and DaBaby linked up with Lil Yachty for the rapper’s “Oprah’s Bank Account.” The song’s music video features Yachty portraying an Oprah Winfrey-like talk show host named Boprah.
Some social media users had an issue with the Quality Control representative wearing a dress and a wig for the visuals. He was labeled as gay or bisexual for putting on women’s clothing.
“B*tch it’s just supposed to be entertaining… it ain’t even that deep, y’all N*gga’s so in denial with y’all masculinity sh*t like this bother y’all.. relax,” tweeted Yachty after one critic suggested he did not have to dress as Oprah to sell his music.
Another person commented that Lil Yachty “let the black community down.” In response, the Atlanta native posted photos showing that person was actually Caucasian.

(AllHipHop News) Russ recently sat down with The Rap Pack podcast. During the interview, the Shake the Snow Globe album creator talked about how Hip Hop has always been led by elite emcees.
Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole were listed as the so-called “trinity” of the culture right now. According to Russ, another superstar is at the forefront of the next era.
“I’ll tell you the inevitable, the pioneer of the shift is Travis Scott,” said Russ. “Because if time isn’t taken, Travis will outsell one of the big three because the fanbase is that huge.”
In addition, Russ named himself, J.I.D., and YBN Cordae as the next generation of rappers that are still focused on lyricism. The 27-year-old also discussed how Hip Hop contains different sub-genres and the greats can combine bars with party rap.
(AllHipHop News) Gayle King says she has “moved on” from the debacle surrounding her interview with Lisa Leslie regarding Kobe Bryant’s alleged sexual assault case… but has she?
The “CBS This Morning” host appeared on her famous best friend’s new inspirational crusade, the “Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Visions for Your Life in Focus Tour.”
During a chat with Oprah, Gayle unpacked what it was like to go from being kinda cool with folk, to having almost every big rapper with a voice on social media attacking her.
She said to the crowd, “I have moved on… Is there a scab? Yeah. But I have moved on.”
“I put on my game face and my big girl pants, because I never lost sight of who I was, what I believe I am, and my intention,” she boldly said. “I’ve never lost sight of that. But it certainly was a learning curve, and it was very painful,” the veteran journalist continued.”
This sounds great.
But a few months ago, she seemed incredibly on angst and embarrassed. She seemed incredibly unsettled and clamored. But time, and a retreat into the busying sands of her actual job helped reshape the ordeal and reimagine her truth.
Snoop has since apologized on the “Red Table Talk” with Jada, Mama Adrienne, and Willow.
(AllHipHop News) The NBA just announced the rest of the season has been suspended the rest of the entire season as the United States grapples with the outbreak of the coronavirus.
According to a press release, the drastic measure was taken just moments ago.
“The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of tonight’s schedule of games until further notice,” the NBA said in a press release.
The news came after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus aka COVID-19, just before the teams match against Oklahoma City Thunder.
The NCAA just announced they hold the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments without fans over the spread of the virus, which has been labeled a pandemic.
And President Donald Trump just suspended all travel from Europe (except the U.K.) to the United States for the next 30 days as the world tries to get the outbreak under control.
(AllHipHop News) A young rapper out of Detroit is being held without bond by the Feds after getting arrested for a hefty gun charge.
42 Dugg, whose real name is Dion Marquise Hayes, was scheduled to perform when the authorities came to lock him up.
According to The Detroit News, the rapper is being held without bond in connection to an anonymous call made last year in November, to agents at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The tipster told them that 42 Dugg had fired off a weapon while he was inside of Stoddard’s Range and Guns in Atlanta, despite not being allowed to even touch one.
That is because 42 Dugg was convicted in 2010 of carjacking and felony firearms possession.
This is why you have to watch who is around you. Once the agents got word that homeboy was at the range, they went and watched the surveillance tapes and the range records that showed that the rapper was there.
According to The Detroit News, 42 Dugg is being represented by a court-appointed lawyer.
(AllHipHop News) For years, rap disciples have been praying to whoever is on the Hip-Hop’s Mt. Olympus and begged for music from Jay Electronica to fall fresh like manna from the sky.
But it has never come.
After about a decade of praying and wishing, the rap gods have finally answered with a favorable response. The reply came through the holy church of Instagram, and Roc Nation’s Lenny S blessed us all with a word!
Lenny S took to The Gram on Tuesday posting a flick of Elect, Law Parker, Young Guru and JAY-Z in the lab, clearly cooking up some music.
Then Tidal dropped the bomb on the world on Wednesday.
In a post on Twitter, the streaming service announced that finally, the world will receive a project from Jay Electronica and some fans will have an opportunity to come to a series of private listening parties to hear the new album.
It’s time. We're giving @JayElectronica fans an exclusive first listen of his album 'A Written Testimony' with 3 intimate events in NY, LA, & New Orleans.
“It’s time. We’re giving @JayElectronica fans an exclusive first listen of his album ‘A Written Testimony’ with 3 intimate events in NY, LA, & New Orleans.” Tidal posted.
A Written Testimony promises to enlighten and entertain. Jay has been hinting that it was coming for at a least a month when he took to Twitter and dropped several scripted messages.
(AllHipHop News) Meek Mill came home from jail to a record deal, adoring fans and another chance at superstardom.
And while no one is calling him a saint, it would appear to be unacceptable for him to consistently be harassed by authorities when he travels.
Is it because he is famous, rich, Black, on his prison reform kick heavy, or is it because he is up to something?
Recently, the rapper feels as if he is becoming a target.
For the second time in less than seven days, the Philly rapper’s rented private jet has been stopped and searched by the police.
It was reported that right before leaving Miami on Saturday on March 8th the jet was searched. Then the jet was searched again on Tuesday, March 10th at another unnamed location.
“Searching the jet againnnnnnn,” he posted March 10th on the photo along with a face palm emoji that has now been removed. “Somebody calling them, gotta be looking for drugs on us! That’s an insult.”
Clearly the police did not find anything because currently, he is posted up in Jamaica. In a post on Instagram, he says, “ Cuz x @popcaanmusic big vibes!”
(AllHipHop News) “The Wendy Williams Show”will go ahead without a live studio audience “until further notice” due to coronavirus concerns.
The move was announced on social media as global cases of coronavirus rose to more than 119,000, with over 4,300 fatalities.
“Wendy values her co-hosts and their daily participation, but in light of the current health climate, ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ will not have a live studio audience until further notice,” the statement reads. “We will continue to produce a daily live talk show and look forward to welcoming the studio audience back when the time is right.”
The news comes as the outbreak of the illness continues to wreak havoc, with reports claiming TV shows “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” will also be recorded without a live audience to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Officials from California’s Coachella and Stagecoach festivals also confirmed the events have officially been postponed due to the issue on Tuesday, while acts including Madonna, Queen, Ciara, BTS, and Mariah Carey have canceled shows in the wake of the pandemic.
The movie sees Terry Crews as an ex-gang member John Henry, who is forced to revisit his traumatic and tumultuous past while on a mission to save two immigrant kids on the run from his former gang leader played by Ludacris.
Taking place in the streets of Los Angeles, “John Henry” will take audiences through an emotional rollercoaster of loyalty, reconciliation, and growth.
For Forbes, he’s a filmmaker and composer originally from Upstate New York who has recently moved to Los Angeles — Inglewood to be exact.
His journey to the West Coast is marked by his dreams of a career in film music. Graduating from Berklee College of Music with a degree in film scoring certainly helped.
Getting his start in horror films, Will eventually dropped out of grad school halfway through and began learning by experience and trial and error.
With “John Henry,” Will Forbes describes his directorial debut as something that happened “out of necessity.” The film is currently on streaming platforms such as Amazon, Xbox, DirectTV, etc.
AllHipHop caught up Forbes to discuss his transition from scorer to director, working with Terry and Luda, getting DJ Quik on board and what he’s most excited for as the film releases.
AllHipHop: Talk about “John Henry” being your first movie.
Will Forbes: I came out here as a film composer and I wasn’t getting the kinds of gigs I wanted. I was getting a lot of reality TV, EPK, and background music when I was trying to do features. The way to get that is either knowing a director or having someone you know who’s already a composer, that you can get in with. I didn’t know many directors and I’m not very good at networking, so I started writing my own stuff. I started as a screenwriter, got a little traction with that.
Wrote some more scripts. I got into this thing called Shudder Labs a couple years ago, it’s a fellowship for DIY horror filmmakers. I got in on a horror script that I wrote. Through that, I got a meeting with an old producer friend I’d known previously, that started this development process. Getting through the script of working out the dark and turning into what it came to. With all those projects, you never know which one’s going to happen. All of a sudden, they’re like “yup, somebody wants to do it.”
AllHipHop: So that’s how you transitioned from film scorer to director?
Will Forbes: Yeah, by necessity really. [laughs]
The plot is based around two immigrant kids on the run. How were you able to bring that concept to life?
It was actually a couple years ago when I first wrote it before that crisis got really heavy. But there were signs that were already there. Originally, it started out as a different movie. It was a horror movie set in half the suburbs, half in South Central. But that was too expensive for us to make so I had to readjust in a different way. When I did that, it gave me an opportunity to bring different communities together.
I wanted to tell a story specifically about Honduran immigrants, what’s going on with that crisis. There’s a Honduran indigenous activist who at the time had just been murdered, so I wanted to write about that. It ended up becoming a different story of John being a protector and showing that strength. Something that would get him back to that point of getting into violence.
AllHipHop: How much was the budget?
Will Forbes: It was an independent movie. Most of the cast are friends of mine playing themselves. When the script got out, it got a lot of attention from people because there aren’t a lot of opportunities out there for black actors and these kinds of roles. Not that many movies for them. Once Terry got attached to it, he read the script and loved it. We met once and he was down.
Once he got attached to it, everybody else was like “I wanna hang out with Terry.” At the very least, I have to thank Terry even if the movie doesn’t work out. But when you get all those names, it made it more difficult to put together and eliminate what we were able to do. Still, with what we had, we tried to get out of it as much as we could.
AllHipHop: What was it like working with Ludacris?
Will Forbes: It was great. He’s super professional. He came in super last minute because we had another actor that dropped out five days before. He came in last minute, read the script real quick, flew in from Atlanta. He came in, it was great. Every take of his was different. He’d always get it to the point and gave me different options. It was super useful when I got to edit because all of them were great. Super chill.
AllHipHop: How is he as an actor?
Will Forbes: Really good. Really talented. He cares about what he’s doing. He’s not just there to be a rapper in a movie, he’s there to act. He’s trying to have an acting career, expand further dramatically than what he’s done in the action movies. When he signed on, he’s telling me “I always wanted to play an a######.” Because he’s always playing a nice guy. In the rom-com “No Strings Attached,” he played the friend on the side. He wanted a chance to do some badass things.
AllHipHop: What’s the role music plays in the film? Reviews have been raving.
Will Forbes: The music is what ties together the tone. I’m playing a lot with a lot of different tones. I was thinking I might not have another chance to make a movie, so I’m trying to throw as many different things at the wall. There’s comedy, there’s action, there’s drama, there’s horror. There’s a lot of different elements there so the music ties it all together. Initially, my plan was to do a lot of classical music, I didn’t want a lot of hip-hop. I wasn’t able to get classical music, so I had to write my own stuff. Tried to do a more Western vibe to it. When we got DJ Quik on board, that filled out the rest of it. He gave it that SoCal sound we needed.
AllHipHop: How was working with DJ Quik?
Will Forbes: We initially had another rapper early on who’s scheduling didn’t work out. The producers kept giving me rappers that didn’t fit the location or the vibe I was going for. Trap rappers from Atlanta or young SoundCloud kids who weren’t going to make it sound like 90’s LA. It had to be DJ Quik or Kendrick, and it’s not going to be Kendrick. [chuckles] It just happened. I know his manager through some friends of mine. One of our financiers ran into him at a Sundance party, they’re like “let’s do this!” He came on board, he loved the script. Loved the movie, it was great. I got some original stuff from him, some unreleased stuff from him. I got access to some of his independent stuff like Rosecrans, the album he did with Problem. He’s great, I love him.
AllHipHop: Were there any obstacles in getting Terry Crews to look serious? What was it like working with him?
Will Forbes: The first 2 to 3 days maybe, but he really dived into the role. I showed him “Brawl in the Cell Block 99” with Vince Vaughn, another comedic actor who goes back and forth. It really got him to a place where he takes that energy down and makes the camera more still. Because he’s always high energy, so getting him to be still in the moment. As the shoot went on, he was finding really deep stuff. Especially with working the older actors, Ken Foree and Lyne Odums, who played his grandmother and father. He was able to play off them in scenes. By the end of the shoot, I’d leave the camera on and see some subtle face expressions that you’ve never seen out of him. That was cool.
AllHipHop: What was your experience at Berklee like?
Will Forbes: Berklee was cool. It was weird. I got in 2004, starting as a bass player. I didn’t even start playing until I was 15, so I got really good really fast. As I was getting there, I didn’t want to be a bass player in a band. I really love movies and always wanted to be a director but I assumed that directors were these super-geniuses, so I’m like “I’ll just do music for it.”
I got into the film scoring program there, which was really great. I still have friends and college roommates I worked on the movie with, so I have all those connections from there. When I started, it was more a jazz school. All these things they have or can do now, are what my stuff paid for. [chuckles] I didn’t have access to all those recording studios they have now.
AllHipHop: Did it make the transition into the industry easier or harder?
Will Forbes: I had really bad timing. I graduated early from Berklee. I did trimesters in my last couple years so I graduated a year early, thinking, “I need to rush out to LA and get a job.” 4 days after I got here, I got a job right away at Hans Zimmer studio. But then the writers strike happened in 2007, so all of their jobs at that place were gone and I got fired 3 days in.
Got another job for another composer who isn’t as connected, but eventually the same thing. Strike’s going on so I got laid off of that. If it wasn’t for that strike, it would’ve been super easy. At a certain point, the job market was composed of assistants and helping people who are fresh out of college. I graduated but I’m doing my own thing so they don’t want me for the job. I’m in this limbo phase where I had to figure my stuff out. It helps, but it didn’t help me as much as it did with everybody else.
AllHipHop: What are you most excited about as the film releases?
Will Forbes: Just getting it out there, letting people see the performances. I love my actors, they all did very great work. Maybe cats use it to get to the next level. Especially guys like Ken Foree, he’s been doing horror movies his whole life, he’s been waiting for someone to put him in a drama. He was so great, so professional. So much fun all the time.
AllHipHop: Anything else you want to let us know?
Will Forbes: We tried to make a fun movie. It’s meant to tackle these subjects in a different way and provide a fun time.
(AllHipHop News) Notorious B.I.G.’s daughter T’yanna Wallace is making a name for herself as she makes a foray into fashion.
Wallace recently launched her new clothing line, Notoriouss. She spoke with AllHipHop at her first runway show, where she confessed she’s tired of being known as the daughter of the Notorious B.I.G.
The show coincided with the 23rd anniversary of the beloved “Hypnotize” rapper’s murder.
The hip-hop star, real name Christopher Wallace, was killed at age 24 in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles in 1997 – when T’yanna was just three years old.
(AllHipHop Rumors) Kanye West has been doing the Christian thing for quite some time. In fact, Jesus Is Born just came out last year, to the acclaim of people that don’t care about MAGA hats. Anyway, I will leave it alone!
I am hearing that Kanye West is now working on a new album…already. Now, we don’t know the nature of this completely, but he is definitely working on new music, according to my sources.
Now, Kanye West just had a Sunday Service in Paris, where Kim Kardashian made headlines for wearing a skintight latex catsuit. I may have written too much in the source, but I felt they suggested that this new opus would be a “regular” Kanye album, not a religious-based recording.
But the more I look at the messaging, I am thinking we don’t know yet what kind of album this is. Last time, I paid a lot of attention to Kanye’s music, he was doing this:
What is your interest levels in a new Kanye West album?
(AllHipHop News) Chance the Rapper celebrated his first wedding anniversary by staging a Chicago, Illinois radio takeover with an hour full of love songs dedicated to his wife.
He shared the romantic radio programming with fans via Instagram, posting a photo of the couple from its wedding day alongside the news of the “commercial-free hour dedicated to Kirsten” on hip-hop and R&B station 107.5 WGCI.
Chance captioned the image: “Love songs from me to you babe. I love you forever. You make me special. Thank you.”
He also gave fans a glimpse at the way he had decorated the couple’s Chicago home, covering the apartment with red rose petals, while also gifting Kirsten with large bouquets of the flower.
Chance later posted video footage of a private dinner he had also organized for the loved-up pair.
Meanwhile, Kirsten, who shares two young daughters with Chance, gushed about her man in a sweet tribute on her Instagram page.
“1 year down and FOREBBER TO GO! I love you…,” she wrote beside a snap of the two walking back up the aisle after becoming husband and wife. “today has already been the most special… I got your back and your front till the end of time. #nevaend.”
He further claims (cause we could stop there but we can’t) that she is making him fear for his life. This is not the first time Future has expressed his concern about Eliza’s mental state.
But Eliza Reign is no victim and has her own tricks up her sleeve. She has filed her own documents, asking the courts to deny Future this mental evaluation that he seeks.
I can just see the damn feathers clucking.
Many believe that this recent flurry of litigation stems from her recent interview with Rah Ali. Others point to Lori Harvey wearing jewelry that had everyone thinking they were engaged.
Oh… Someone is crazy alright. Someone is indeed crazy.
