Mark Spratley AKA SpratFool Talks About His Success, Going Platinum With DDG, His SXSW Legend, Machine & Influence

Many can talk but few can back it up and this man is one of those backing his talk as he continues to flourish, create stars and grow his empire. Mark Spratley AKA “SpratFool” or “Sprat” has paved his own lane within the industry, obtaining success throughout multiple facets from his own label, management, PR, publicity, marketing, event curation, social media, A&R work and plenty more all while creating his own brand and influence. Expanding on with this influence, Sprat has turned into quite an entrepreneur entering the tobacco world, dabbling into real estate and starting his own car rental company.

Turning nothing into something, Sprat has built a prolific profile while developing a few very successful businesses and changing the lives of countless artists or brands. A well known name within the industry that has continued to let his work speak for itself. It’s a good chance that at least once a year he is responsible for one of your favorite new artists getting to the forefront. Becoming a free spirit in the industry, Sprat has created this audience on his own as he spearheads his self ran label Starting Five and chooses to stay independent with his own marketing agency. It is always a sight to see when you can observe one of the next big industry moguls navigate his way throughout music and life.

Mark Spratley is one of those moguls to watch, as in just under 7 years, the New Jersey native has created a resume, influence and business that many take a lifetime to pursue or obtain. We have our eye on the young mogul as he continues to set trends, knock down doors, pop off artists and make a significant impact on the industry and plenty of lives. We took some time out to sit down with him as we talked about music, business, artists and more below.

How long have you been in the music industry?
Crazy but it’s going on 7 years right now. I’ve probably been going at it 24/7 for 5-6 years. That’s literally the last time I ever had to clock in to a “job”.

Being independent while coming up off your own name and work is always a marathon. That marathon doesn’t always have all the bells and whistles like a label position would provide you. Whether it’s politics, opportunities, press or acknowledgement, the independent machine seems to catch the tail end at times. Why do you choose to stay independent and build your own label/agency in Starting Five?

I’m a free agent.
I built this all off my own name and work from the ground up. No internships, no family relationships, no college degree, no label behind me, outlet or a powerful name that I could drop. I built this and everything that came with it. To me that is more gratifying than anything else.
Of course you have clients at a label, the label has signed acts lol. Does working at a label or a major outlet help people get their foot in the door or keep them relevant? Yes. But what happens when your time is up at that place? That juice is gone huh? Some work it right and build their own name while up in these buildings, some don’t. I like the path I chose and would never regret it. I built this.
If a situation presents itself that makes sense I’m all ears. At this point in time I do very damn well by myself with my own label/agency. Is that to say I wouldn’t entertain a situation? No, not at all but they would have to present the right position. I’m not taking any position under any one I’ve run circles around, respectfully haha. My resume is proven, the results are consistent, my machine is evident, my influence is strong. That position has to be of power. I bring plenty to the table.
I have something here though. My machine is what these labels are offering to others if not larger. A team that would allow me to do more of what I do best and multiply does make sense right now. My ear would be beneficial to any label.

I’m sure “Moonwalking In Calabasas” and it’s success was not only a huge moment for DDG but the entire team. Talk to us about the record, what was your involvement?

That’s my first plaque, platinum possibly double platinum at that. To have played a pivotal role in the record is even more gratifying, especially to see everything come to life and what has come to fruition since for DDG and the entire team. That’s the best part of it all.
But to spearhead the marketing and roll out behind the entire record/remix and for it to go platinum is a blessing. I put my foot in that record for sure. I think it was just another example of when I really want to press the button, the sky’s the limit for my machine, especially with quality music. DDG slid, Blueface slid and we made something of it. It was a perfect moment to capture the fact that Blueface was” rapping on beat” which literally catapulted the record to go viral off a few tweets from my account. Clearly it was a successful marketing strategy as Blueface team used it for their next single haha.
From the marketing, publicity, press, influence and campaign behind the record and artist, I was all the way in. We really stepped it up and demanded respect. DDG is up right now.
An XXL Freshman, Top 100 Billboard charting, platinum and gold selling recording artist, undefeated PPV boxer, social media star and Youtube sensation. That sounds crazy and it’s only the beginning for him.

DDG is one of the hottest artists in the game right now. Was his success in the music industry overnight? How long have you been working with DDG?

Actual facts!DDG came into the music industry with his Youtube influence but getting the music and respect to where it is currently at wasn’t overnight. That man put in the work, the entire team put in the work, now we are here with so much more to do. Over the past 4 years working with DDG, whenever he puts his mind to something, he makes it happen.
One of the only Youtubers to make a successful transition into the music world. HE DID THAT. It’s pretty dope to say that I contributed and played a large role in that transition.
Our whole first campaign was the “Take Me Serious” campaign from introducing him to the industry, the right people, powering up the sound, demanding respect and solidifying the foundation. Mission complete.

You helped ‘Moonwalking In Calabasas’ and countless other records go viral. How does it actually feel to be the key behind making some popular records or artists go viral? Does your social media presence play a part in helping an artist go viral?

This is stuff you dream of as a kid. Of course I wanted to be a pro athlete and in some league but to be the power that I am, as young as I am, it feels amazing.
To get a plaque, live this lifestyle and do what I am doing on a consistent basis is surreal. I’m enjoying life. Don’t get it twisted, I work my a** off.
To actually make a record click or an artist buzz is what fuels me. Through all the BS or potential time wasted with some artists or clients, it is still something that I am heavily passionate about. Of course I can go work with plenty of major acts or any label but I enjoy the development process, I enjoy connecting dots, finding talent, aligning stars, curating and providing everything an artist needs to become a superstar. Creating something from just an idea is something special.
I’m here before the label knows of the artist or puts the “machine” behind them. I am the machine that helps bring the artist to the forefront, get known by the label, fans, athletes, artists, influencers, the industry and the masses. I help create the foundation, the following, multiply the fan base and bring an artist to the limelight. I help power up the sound, curate, advise and anything you can possibly think of to take everything to the next level. I bring in the bag and secure it. Each artist or brand is different and needs to be catered to differently. If I become passionate about something and the artist or brand is on the same page as me, there is no limit to what we can doOf course my social media presence helps. I don’t even have a 100 thousand on one platform or all of this “clout”, but the power behind the following I have and the influence that I bring to the table is massive. The respect was earned. The foundation was built. The people and my followers listen and I can’t thank them enough for that. My Twitter is what you can catch me on the most and it is certainly the platform that I make a whole lot go viral on. I definitely talk my sh*t over there haha.
Social media has been a game shark. It’s literally a cheat code. Utilize it.
Your role in many artists’ careers tends to be behind the scenes. You’ve developed artists, aligned stars and shifted the careers of plenty with your machine and ability to “press the button”. Being a respected name within the industry, is being behind the scenes something you are comfortable with? Will we get to see Sprat come to the forefront?

I’m here to win. If an artist wins, I win, if one of my peers wins, I win. I know who I am and what I bring to the table so as long as the respect is on the table I am willing to fill the void or role in any situation that makes sense. Any situation I enter I am still a boss. Whether it is behind the scenes or in the forefront, I’m going to get mine regardless.
To date, I’ve been a firm believer in letting my work speak for itself. Although at this point, It can only help to capitalize on both. The larger I become and continue to make my brand, the easier it can be to continue what I do and take these artists, brands or companies to the next level. I tend to focus on others all the time rather than my brand but I believe there can be a balance for both.
On the other hand, my life is a movie and I get asked all the time why I don’t capture it. I’ve missed out on a lot of content. I think it’s definitely time I start capturing these moments I am a part of and show the public a deeper look at the industry through multiple lenses.
Expect to see a whole lot of me in the near future. You’ll just have to wait and see how.

SinceThe80s president, Barry Hefner created a post that made its way around the industry and was felt by many. It was a post that you recently reposted on social media. Can you talk to us about that?

LMAO, man these artists are crazy. I see it all the time, you would laugh over the BS I deal with. I can only imagine the BS some of my peers deal with as well. It was surprising at first but now it’s almost expected, like okay I know its going to happen but when lol.
I don’t like people wasting my time. Money or anything material you can always get back, I could care less about that, but time you can never get back. It’s goofy how uneducated some people can be when getting into a field they want to pursue. It shows who really was about their business growing up, educated, hustled, touched money etc.
People want the world from you. Granted some of us can give them that but that requires attention, time and plenty more that we have put blood and sweat in for and will have to do once again. People want you to commit to them, blow them up, give your time, relations, connections, knowledge and juice but aren’t willing to commit to you. It’s not even just artists, it goes across the board with a lot of different lanes in the entertainment/music industry. They’ve seen a few idiots complaining that didn’t READ their contracts or took the first deal that came their way from some no name that sold them on the world. Make your own educated decision. Execute.
At some point, when you are really moving, you will need a solid team to help multiply and handle your business operations so you can operate and do what you do best. Someone respectable and proven looking to come in on any situation from the ground up is not only an investment but a risk on their behalf. They invest not only their time but possibly money, connections, relations, energy and reputation.
People will be in the same position years later because they didn’t want to make the same commitment that they are asking of someone else.
Artists are getting a buzz and try to leave the same people that helped take them to the next level and literally ruin the upward motion they were on. Rarely realizing the machine that was behind them until it’s not there any more.
I understand at times because there is a lot of foolery out here in the industry, from BS managers, publicists and more. Understand who you are talking to, understand where you are at, do your research and educate yourself so you can make a proper business decision.
Search Google, check out the peoples resumes and the evidence that supports it. Who have they popped off? Who have they popped off recently? What was their actual role? What do they do? What have they done? You know there are a lot of people that just like to ride the wave.
At the end of the day would you rather make 70-90% of 1 million dollars or 100% of nothing? I don’t know about you but I know what I’m choosing.

Sprat, you do a whole lot within the industry and entertainment world. It’s to the point where people know your name, know your resume and you have actually created an avid base of fans and supporters. Since you do so much, some may not know all that you do or the extent of what you do. Can you talk to us briefly about you and your machine?

My network and relations are vast. I do a bit of everything so it all pretty much runs full circle. The fact that I do everything and do it on another level helps me even more while allowing me to keep a lot in house.
A lot of people ask what I do, I tend to do what I want haha. Some know me for my events, social media, popping off an artist, putting them on to an artist, marketing, PR/publicity, blogging, my Times Square NYC billboards, brand activations and plenty more.
I have my own label, had success in the management world, one of the premiere marketers and publicists in the game, a digital media guru, marketing genius, curator, former journalist/writer, consult, A&R, I throw massive events and mansions across the country while also having some tours under my belt. Just off rip with those my network is ridiculous. Add in the fact that I am successful at each and everyone of those, it only helps propel me and any artist I work with. I have the tools and machine to help any artist function, get to a bag and create an audience.
I am a one stop shop.
As I’ve stated before, “I’m here before the label knows of the artist or puts the “machine” behind them. I am the machine that helps bring the artist to the forefront, get known by the label, press, fans, athletes, artists, influencers, the industry and the masses. I help create the foundation, the following, structure, multiply the fan base, get you in the mix and bring an artist to the limelight. I help power up the sound, curate, create the narrative, A&R, brand, advise and anything you can possibly think of to take everything to the next level. Each artist or brand is different and needs to be catered to differently. If I become passionate about something and the artist or brand is on the same page as me, there is no limit to what we can do.”

You haven’t thrown any events since COVID truly began. Is that something you are looking to get back into? Can we expect you at SXSW 2022?

For sure. Events are always a space I’ll be in. COVID definitely had me put my events on the back burner but I’ve been itching to get back into it. There is a lot on my table right now but you will see more events, mansion parties and some other creative ideas I have in the near future.
I threw an exclusive mansion event a month or so ago to test a new idea I have out. Let’s just say it was a success and I plan on bringing that monthly to LA.
SXSW 2022 I’ll be there if the world permits. It’s been 2 years and my levels have only increased. Prior to COVID the plan was an ATX takeover with Antonio Brown as we were going to flood mansion parties and more with countless major acts. For the return, expect me to curate and take over the whole week.
I think it’s time for SXSW and I to do something as well, so SXSW, Brian, if you’re reading this, let’s make it make sense!

Can we ever expect a Sprat x 40oz Van x YesJulz collaborative event again?People always bring up the events we threw. We made some memorable moments. It’s crazy because I was just with 24HRS the other week and he was talking about the very first 40oz Bounce that 40 and I brought to Austin, Texas (SXSW). It was a movie. The floor was literally caving in. I don’t think people will ever forget those moments. A lot went down that night.Van knows every single time we connect we get a bag and run up a vibe. That is nothing but a conversation.
I’m not even sure if events are what Julz is on right now to be real. She is going crazy with YesJuice and enjoying life. If you haven’t, go check out YesJuice in Florida.
When the time is right an event or party is something that can always be done or discussed. I think the next step would have to be a festival though.

Kiddo Marv snapped on that “Casamigos” record too

We saw you just opened up the official headquarters for Starting Five? A major accomplishment, congrats.

Yeah man, in Downtown LA to! I haven’t had my own studio since the Jersey City days so this is huge. I should have it fully operating by the end of November. It’s going to serve as the headquarters for now. 2 recording studios, production space, office and much more.

It’s definitely an open space for powers and creatives to get busy. I’m going to have that place moving for sure. The idea is to still get the compound but I wanted something solid in the meantime. This place is going to facilitate a whole lot and it will definitely allow me to get back in the studio more and focus on creating.

JayDaYoungan Arrested Again On Multiple Charges

JayDaYoungan continues to find himself in legal trouble.

Just a few months after being arrested for accessory to murder, the 23-year-old rapper was apprehended by police yet again over the weekend. The Louisiana native was booked on multiple charges, including child desertion and drug possession.

According to FOX 8 News in New Orleans, JayDaYoungan was arrested following a traffic stop in Washington Parish, Louisiana on October 30. Jail records for the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office list 10 charges against him.

JayDaYoungan, whose real name is Javorius Scott, was charged with switching license plates, driving without proof of insurance, child desertion, child restraint (second offense), obstruction of justice (evidence tampering) and contempt of court.

He was hit with four drug-related charges: illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of someone under 17 years old, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with weapons present, possession of marijuana and possession of a schedule II narcotic.

JayDaYoungan’s latest arrest adds to his already complicated legal situation, which includes his alleged role in an August 2020 murder in Roseland, Louisiana.

Earlier this year, the Atlantic Records artist was charged with accessory to second-degree murder and obstruction of justice in connection to a deadly shooting that claimed the life of 21-year-old Zion Hutcherson. He was released on a $175,000 bond.

Little Mix Says They Talked To Jesy Nelson About Blackfishing Before Nicki Minaj Controversy

Little Mix had a “friendly, educational” chat with former bandmate Jesy Nelson about blackfishing long before the release of her “Boyz” video.

The singer was criticized in text messages by Leigh-Anne Pinnock for appropriating black culture, darkening her skin with fake tan, and changing her hair for the “Boyz” video.

Now Pinnock and her bandmates have confirmed they spoke to Jesy about the difficulties in the way she presented herself before she quit the group last year.

Jade Thirlwall told Stella magazine, “We don’t want to talk about the video, or be critical, but one thing we will clarify regarding the blackfishing situation is that Jesy was approached by the group in a very friendly, educational manner…

“(Blackfishing is) absolutely not OK. Capitalizing on aspects of blackness without having to endure the daily realities of the black experience is problematic and harmful to people of color. We think it’s absolutely not OK to use harmful stereotypes.”

But the hitmakers don’t want to dwell on their feud with Jesy.

Jade added, “We’ve dealt with it in the best way that we know how, and got each other through it.”

Their comments came after Jesy recently admitted she isn’t in contact with her former bandmates any more, but is hopeful they can put their differences behind them in the future.

She said, “We’re not talking any more. It is sad but honestly there is no bad blood from my side, and I still love them to pieces and genuinely wish them all the best. I loved my time with them, and we’ve got the most incredible memories together but it’s just one of those things which needs to take time, so who knows. To me they are still the sickest girl band in the world.”

D.C. Rapper Walkdown Will Drops New Song While Awaiting Trial For Alleged Murder Of Rival

Recently Washington, D.C.’s rap scene has been incredibly violent. Senselessly marred by either violence or imprisonment, the challenges facing the rappers in D.C. is impeding the area’s growth that it has been primed to see. The recently released Fat Trel is one case where this has gotten widespread attention from the Hip-Hop community.

While some rappers have gotten their shine, we do see artist like the currently incarcerated Walkdown Will whose legal problems and absence from the scene have been notable and well-documented.

On May 7, 2020, the then 18 year-old William Whitaker, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with premeditated first degree murder while armed.

Although Walkdown Will is sitting in a cell as he awaits the trial for the alleged murder of another rival rapper who had exchanged numerous disses, his team, Major Life Music, has been steadily pushing his music and rising to the top of their city’s scene in dramatic fashion over the last several months.

For this new track Walkdown Will recruited notable PG County, Maryland rapper Goonew who was recently freed from a brief prison stint of his own. While he was released due to lack of evidence, it’s yet another example of an artist’s prime years being jeopardized.

That said, Goonew’s return home has only built further anticipation for Will’s purported release. Check it out as producer Cheecho handled the trunk-rattling production on this song which you can hear below.

Hopefully Walkdown Will’s legal situation can be resolved soon so he can fully chase his musical dreams and live up to the potential his whole region sees in him.

The Universal Hip Hop Museum Partners With AllHipHop.com On Inaugural ‘Hip Hop History Month’ Campaign

The Universal Hip Hop Museum and AllHipHop.com will partner this November to celebrate the inaugural Hip Hop History Month commemoration to present to you, the first annual “Know Ya Hip Hop” campaign.

“Know Ya Hip Hop” is a series of social media posts that highlight 30+ outstanding contributors to the culture. We have considered all of the four elements of Hip-Hop (DJ, Emcee, Graffiti, B-Boy/B-Girl) adding a few that are often forgotten (Fashion, Production, Hustle, etc.). We also made sure that we have a balance of gender, race, ethnicity, region, and all the other things that have divided the culture, to present you a solid list.

“Know Ya Hip Hop” will further debut some special flyers from the museum’s never before seen archive, collected by Paradise Gray (Chief Curator) Prime Minister Pete Nice (Co-curator) for the UHHM’s Archives, Curation, and Education department. These valuable relics showcase some of the earliest concerts of the culture.

Today’s first contributor that we are celebrating is DJ Kool Herc.

DJ KOOL HERC

Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc is considered by many the “Father of Hip-Hop.” The DJ, instrumental in forming the party crew The Herculoids (which included Coke La Rock who is also considered the first emcee in the culture), threw a  “Back to School Jam ” for his sister at the rec center in his building on August 11, 1973. That jam on 1520 Sedgwick Ave is considered the jump off of Hip-Hop culture as we know it and Herc is credited as the central figure around that historic day.

Check out our first flyer for a concert held on this day, 36 years ago.

IS THIS ONE OF THE FIRST FLYERS TO FEATURE MEMBERS OF THE WU-TANG CLAN?

The Wu-Tang Clan dropped “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” in 1993, but the origins of the group date back nearly a decade earlier to 1985 as evidenced by this rare flyer recently discovered by the UHHM curators.

Pete Nice breaks down the significance of the flyer.

On November 1, 1985, Old Dirty Bastard, the RZA, and GZA shared the stage of Bed Stuy’s Galaxy Ballroom with Dr. Rock of the Force MCs and Tony Ds group, the Bad Boys,  performing their hit “Inspector Gadget” and featuring the female beatbox, K-Love. ODB appeared as “The Baby Beat Box Unique Ason” and the RZA and GZA were billed as the group “All  In Together Now” featuring “The Rap Genius.” Other dancehall and reggae artists also hit the stage that night with specially invited guests Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick also listed on the flyer. This flyer could be the earliest evidence of Wu-Tang members performing in public in existence.

This “Know Ya History” Moment has been brought to you by @uhhmmuseum. Click here to find out more information about the museum and make a monetary donation for the important work we do.’

Kanye West Facing Backlash For Inviting Marilyn Manson To Sunday Service

Kanye West is continuing his association with Marilyn Manson bringing him along to his Sunday Service this weekend.

Marilyn Manson is currently the subject of a criminal investigation after multiple women – including actresses Evan Rachel Wood and Esme Bianco – accused the disgraced rocker of horrific acts of sexual abuse and other violent behavior. He is also facing numerous civil suits for his alleged misconduct.

Manson wasn’t the only celebrity guest invited to Sunday Service. Justin Bieber was in attendance as well as Roddy Rich who both performed a selection of their songs. The Sunday Service choir also performed some “DONDA” songs including “No Child Left Behind” and “Moon.”

Kanye’s dress code for the rooftop service was all white with some of the congregation wearing white hoods.

Ye, Manson, and Justin gathered in a circle with the embattled rocker leading the prayer. The trio stood shoulder to shoulder with their heads bowed in prayer as Justin spoke and the choir sang in the background.

Kanye has taken to wearing an array of masks and face-coverings in public recently and sported a new hairstyle that garnered him some attention. However, for Sunday service his head was shaved bald and it appears that his eyebrows have also been removed.

Twitter users expressed their outrage over the spiritual moment though this is not the first time Ye has aligned himself with Manson. He also had a spot onstage with Ye at the final “DONDA” listening event at Soldier Field.

Freddie Gibbs & Akademiks Reignite Online Beef

Akademiks and Freddie Gibbs have reignited their online beef from last summer. The pair began an online war of words after Gibbs called Jeezy musically “irrelevant.” Ak strongly disagreed and replied, “If Jeezy is irrelevant, Freddie Gibbs, you are absolutely irrelevant as well.”

The pair continued going back and forth on social media and are now back at it again. The feud reignited seemingly out of nowhere after Akademiks posted a video of Kay Flock and Ron Suno fighting at Rolling Loud New York on Saturday (Oct. 30).

Gibbs retweeted the video with a shot at the controversial media personality. “I hope you post it when I run into you,” He wrote.

Akademiks responded with, “U still tweeting? U could came to find me already gangsta.”

According to Gibbs, Akademiks should be grateful he didn’t show up.

“I coulda been smoked akademiks,” he wrote. “His hoe gave me his home address months ago. The n-ggaz in LA he was with last week was not gon protect him if I walked in that no jumper interview. I know all of them. God got bigger plans for me but when I get bored I’m back on yo ass. On VL.”

Unimpressed, Ak responded, “Well s### about s### u aint finna do”

Again, Gibbs claimed he’s giving Ak a pass. “I be letting a lot of n-ggaz breathe. The Lord’s good oxygen and they will wanna pop like they not privileged.”

He then told Akademiks to “GO DJ” before resorting to meme-warfare.

Freddie is in a confrontational mood, last month he called out Dr Umar for a $5 million boxing match.

Rihanna Wins Halloween Dressing Up As Gunna

Rihanna is undoubtedly a fashion icon who can pull off the trickiest of looks with stylish aplomb. Credentials she proved after taking an outfit Gunna was ridiculed for, making it a Halloween costume and turning it into a look!

Rihanna has gone viral after dressing up in Gunna’s New York Fashion Week fit for Halloween this year. The Bajan superstar copied the “Drip Too Hard” rapper’s look to perfection. She had the knee-high Rick Owens boots, identical sheer long sleeve shirt, leather vest, and shorts.

Even the accessories were spot on, Rihanna was draped with ice around the neck in Gunna’s signature style and was sporting the same sunglasses and a similar watch. Even the hairstyle was on point!

https://www.instagram.com/p/CTkmhhuJbqb/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The biggest difference was the reception the pair received. While Gunna was widely clowned for his unorthodox fashion choice, Rhianna has gone viral for all the right reasons.

Rhianna flaunted her costume on Instagram, giving the post the same caption as Gunna when he posted his look last month. The business mogul also nailed the poses, copying his stance and attitude perfectly.

Earlier in the day, she teased her followers with a hint as to what her costume could be. She posted an image of the Rick Owens boots with the caption “The Gunna’z @gunna,”

Rihanna made a fan of Gunna as he took to the comment section to let Ri-Ri know “Nawww U OVERLY WON 🙌🏽.” He also reposted the pic to his Instagram Stories calling Rihanna “OD.”

When Gunna first wore the look, he didn’t receive quite the same reaction as Rihanna. The ridicule doesn’t bother him, according to Gunna, it’s all about confidence. “You just gotta have the confidence to know it is,” he said in a recent interview with GQ. “Everybody not gonna like what I wear, but a majority of people are. Everybody’s not gonna understand what I wear because they don’t shop where I shop.”

Rihanna quickly got back to business posting a sultry image modelling one of the latest looks from her Savage X Fenty collection with the warning “the holiday szn bout to be Xtra af #TisTheSavage.”

Happy Halloween: Some Of The Weirdest, Sickest Rappers Out Now

Since the 1990’s Horror Rap has been circulating in the bedrooms of weird adolescent teens around the globe. I know. I was one of them. I still am. Artists like Brotha Lynch Hung, Esham, Insane Clown Posse, and Ganxsta NIP set the tone with their eerie lyrics, dark beats, and non-filtered topics like murder, suicide, and nerophilia. I remember when I first heard X-Raided’s Xorcist tape, I was like wow. I can’t believe he said that! I needed more. Then a childhood friend showed me a group from San Francisco called Triple 6. They took things so much further I actually felt like I was going to hell for even listening to their music. I was hooked. When I found the Juggalo world, I felt like I finally felt at home as an outcast from the normal mainstream music fans and I finally had something of my own that wasn’t force-fed by the media. There was nothing like seeing Insane Clown Posse live. That ride home, soaking in midwestern soda glowing from seeing the music performed to perfection, and hanging out with people that felt like family. When I started making music as a teen, it was no different. I wrote about the same things my heroes had before me. I finally knew it was ok to put any emotion down on paper whether it was joy, sadness, or even the darkest sides of myself. Horrorcore music changed my life. Even saved it at times. Fast forward to 2021, the scene is running strong and many newcomers and pioneers have released just as shocking, entertaining, and scary for any weirdo like myself to enjoy. Or maybe, just maybe, some of you hip-hop heads can appreciate it if only for one day out of the year. Our day. Halloween. These are some of my favorites to listen to that’s dropped this year:

Insane Clown Posse – Wretched

The ICP has created such a dope community of people that I call family, but is often referred to as a counter-culture, or if you’re the FBI, a gang. Juggalos are often misunderstood, but to me, they are some of the most nonjudgmental, loving, and understanding people I’ve ever had the pleasure of kicking with my whole life. They decide what’s the s### or not in our scene. A documentary called “The United States Of Insanity” recently hit 665 theaters for one special day this month focusing on how the FBI classifies Juggalos as a gang and ICP’s fight for their first amendment rights. Their album “Yum Yum Bedlam” drops today off, and the new music video “Wrectched” is the first single. Thank you Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope. Real s###. You know it’s all love.

Twiztid – Corkscrew

Eastside Detroit demented duo Twiztid has been tearing up s### since before Eminem was opening for their group House Of Krazees. Over the years I’ve been lucky to tour and do songs with these two amazing Emcees who recently started leaning more towards their rock side of darker music. Did I say that right? Yes. They are making dark-ass rock music as well as horror rap these days, and if you want a taste of what they got going on their new music video for “Corkscrew” is the best example from their latest album Unlikely Prescription. Their project Songs Of Samhain Vol II just dropped a few days ago and features artists like their group House Of Krazees, The ROC, Alla Xul Elu, and Blaze Ya Dead Homie from their imprint Majik Ninja Entertainment.

Lil Sicx – Put One In The Air

What can I say about Lil Sicx? The son of Sacramento legend Sicx and nephew of Brotha Lynch Hung. That’s what I can say. You already know what his music is about to sound like. Because he is the perfect mix of both and a breath of fresh air in the mix of the current drill sound that’s currently saturating the Sacramento rap scene. I first met Sicx on the set of X-Raided’s “California Dreamin” video and last year connected with him at Sac Gee Studio in Sacramento to start making music together and was blown away. This is a new breed of the Siccness. Next month he is about to drop his Tales From The Sicc compilation featuring myself, Brotha Lynch, Spice 1, X-Raided, Luni Coleone, Doomsday Productions, and more. Hard copies only available on Diamondlifemusicgroup.com. Check out his latest video. You just got to hear and see this s### I’m telling you.

Ouija Macc – “Get A Life”

Ouija came into the Juggalo world with his new wave brand of rap and represented it to the fullest. What I’ve always admired about Ouija was his hustle. When Insane Clown Posse signed him to their label Psychopathic Records he took his position and ran with it. Wait for nothing or nobody. Go get yours. He has been grinding ever since. Right now he’s on his “Say It To My Face” tour promoting his new album Pretty Ugly dropping November 19th on his own imprint Chapter 17. One of the coolest m############ around. Been down since his first Toof. Check out his latest video “Get A Life” that also features all of my favorite goth b###### from around the way-way.

Twisted Insane – “Missing”

I’ve known about Twisted Insane for a hot minute but finally got to connect with homie out in Phoenix for the first time on one of my tours and he was super cool! He even had one of my CDs in his ride. Twisted Insane is one of the fastest rappers alive and it has been said he was once in the Guinness Book of World Records. When we linked up I immediately got him on my Zodiac mixtape with Kung Fu Vampire and Liquid Assassin and people loved it. Over the years we’ve ran into each other all over the country and it’s always love. Nobody spits like Twisted Insane. Today he dropped Volume 2 and Volume 3 of his VooDoo series in time for Halloween. The West Coast don’t f### around. Check out his music video for “Missing”.

G-Mo Skee “F### It All Up” (feat Tech N9ne, Trizz)

G-Mo isn’t like most of the artists to come out of Richmond, CA. I mean, he might kill you and all, but it’s probably going to be a machete that does you in, not a chop. I first saw G-Mo as a young buck on YouTube running around a park swinging a ninja sword looking all crazy in his music video and was like f###. This dude is going to be big. A few years later, G-Mo was killing s### on TeamBackPack, touring all over the place and in the ranks of the who’s who of horrorcore and hip-hop simultaneously. G just dropped his new album independently called “The Filth Element” and has a new video featuring Tech N9ne and Trizz who are both some of my favorite people in the game period. I f#### with G-Mo and Inf Gang hard. Straight the f### up.

Necro – After 12

I first met Necro in San Francisco when he was touring with Insane Clown Posse but we’ve interacted and knew about each other for years. I used to play his I Need Drugs album on repeat. Not too long ago I got to kick it with him and his crew in LA and he rocked the f### out of the crowd and I turned right back into a fan. This is raw, brutal, New York hip-hop deeply rooted in the streets of Brooklyn. He just dropped a new single called After 12 and the video is bonkers. That Gremlins sample is f###### amazing. RIP The Kid Joe.

Chuckklez – No Patience

One of the up and coming artists from San Jose, CA is Chuckklez has two new singles for this years Halloween drop called “Nightmare Before Halloween” and “I Think I’m Going Insane”. I shot this video for him and was impressed on how animated he is and willing to get crazy for his art. I think this dude is just getting started and has the potential to be one of the biggest artists in this genre. Check out his music video for “No Patience”.

Kung Fu Vampire – 5AM

If you know who I am than you know I’ve rocked with this man since the day we met. Kung Fu Vampire has his own blend of gothic hip-hop that has been voted the best band in the Silicon Valley many years in a row. But since he stepped on the scene of the horror rap world, he exploded. It was like he had his own s### and was adopted by juggalos and horror rap fans everywhere and has toured with some of the biggest acts and put up huge numbers on his own independent runs all over the country. But yeah. I said BAND. He has a band that he tours with and his drummer Chris Paxton who goes by ActionPaxton is also his producer and probably mixed your favorite Bay Area rappers hottest songs. He just dropped a music video with Chris called 5 AM thats on some whole other s###. Kung Fu Vampire knows no boundaries. If you aint know. Know.

Brotha Lynch Hung – Good Night

Look, I’m probably the biggest Brotha Lynch Hung fan in the world. He is one of the pioneers of what we do. I’ve must have bought his Season Of Da Siccness album like 20 times because people kept stealing it out of my car. So 20 of them platinum record sales was from me. I’m excited to let people know he is set to drop his Kevlar Season Of Da Siccness 2 album hella soon. He is steady doing shows and has a new merch line on rapbay.com thats got people going nuts. I’m super juiced for the new album. This Halloween I’m bumpin’ this unreleased video from him called Good Night on repeat.

Alla Xul Elu – Halloween Mask

AXE hit the scene one day and just had a crazy cult-like fanbase instantly. I remember watching their set in Milwaukee and was like f### yeah. This is the s###. It was rumored that they had the attention of Majik Ninja Entertainment, Twiztid’s label, and when the news hit, it’s like they shot right to the forefront of horror rap. They are the epitome of what horrorcore is all about. Their new music video for Halloween Mask speaks for itself.

Bay Area’s horrorcore icon Mars released two new singles this Halloween season called “Don’t Talk To Strangers” and “Final Halloween” on Empire Distribution and 23 other releases in the last year. Give him a follow on Instagram @Mars.

Drake & URL Deliver A Classic Event: Til Death Do Us Part

Photo: @JohnnyNunez

Fans were promised an event that would shift the culture, the biggest battle rap event ever. Drake, the URL, and everyone involved delivered a classic event that showcased exactly why they are the leaders of the emcee battle culture, and continue to make moves to push the scene forward. Fans were treated to a weekend of first-class entertainment, proving that battle rap is as cool as it’s ever been with the event trending No. 1 in the United States on Twitter.

Friday (Oct. 29) kicked off with a surprise two battle event at Chris Brown’s house, set up by Hollywood superstar, Idris Elba as promotions for “The Harder They Come,” the Black western co-produced by Jay-Z.

“Til Death Do Us Part

From the outset, everything looked on course for an envelope-pushing night of battles at Til Death Do Us Part on Saturday (Oct. 30). Smack was doing what he does best, front and center hyping the Long Beach crowd and the untold viewers watching live around the world.

Mainstays of the culture Jay Blac and Nunu Nellz were doing the commentary in between battles and were joined on occasion by Drake. DJ Don DeMarco was back on the decks with his famous ad libs.

Starpower was heavy in the building, Remy Ma, JuJu, and Lil Mama were in attendance and took to the stage to introduce the battles and perform the customary coin flips. Multi-talented battle rappers Emerson Kennedy and Di Da Hennyman opened the proceedings keeping viewers entertained until the performers were ready to take to the stage.

Pat Stay vs. Real Sikh

The event started with a high-energy clash between the veteran Canadian Pat Stay and Jersey’s Real Sikh, currently making his way to becoming one of the culture’s most promising new era emcees. The battle was a highly debatable one, with 60% of the Caffeine fan vote eventually going to the unorthodox, hard-to-beat Pat Stay. Real Sikh maintained his fast-paced multisyllabic flow at times, switching in and out of different rhyme patterns effortlessly but extended his round time making him more effective. Pat Stay showed exactly why he can be so dangerous, with a dominating performance, clowning Sikh’s style, imitating his flow, and angling effectively.

Jaz Vs. Gattas

The anticipation was high for the return of one of the most talented women in the game, Jaz the Rapper. She was up against the pioneer Gattas who goes back to the Grind Time era of battle rap and has been killing it since her return to the game last year following a six-year absence. Jaz was a little slept on in the predictions’ perhaps it was recency bias, or maybe fans simply forgot that Jaz does this “when it’s time to.”

Queen of the Ring’s Babs Bunny came out to introduce this one and got the crowd ready for this one with the cry “Give it up for the ladies!”

Jaz took matters into her own hands opting to go first and the decision proved a wise one. The crowd roared after she uttered her first line “If y’all don’t remember, I does this” before going on to shake the room with punch after punch leading heavy. It was an uphill climb for the veteran Gattas who fought back hard each round but Jaz was too explosive and had the crowd chanting “3-0” before Gattas had a chance to spit her third round. The legend DNA has been saying that “the streets need a body” for some time. It looks as though the streets got what they needed, the overwhelming consensus is that Jaz took every round and is the frontrunner for “Performance of The Night”

Jaz herself said in her postmatch interview that “once she spit that first, it was over.”

Tay Roc vs. Nu Jersey Twork

New York Rap royalty Remy Ma and media personality Juju were on hand to flip the coin to determine who would go first.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Nicole Yvonne Duncan- Smith (@nikkiduncansmith)

Next up was the heavyweight match-up between two of the best to ever do this, in what is being hailed as the potential “Battle of The Night,” as many of the predictions suggested it would be. Some expressed concerns ahead of the battle that the two emcees were too friendly in the build-up and had doubts they would go to war. Early on any fear of that was thrown aside as the two titans went head-to-head in a no-holds-barred fire battle proving exactly why they have the status and reputation they do. The levels of respect they have for each other and the culture were on full display as the two warriors traded punches for a full six rounds.

Twork gave us one of his electrifying “I’m strapped in” moments in every round rousing the crowd with each one as they said his slogan along with him. Tay Roc showed us why he is Smack’s original gunner with an impressive display of punching, consistently rocking the room.

The Caffeine vote gave the win to Tay Roc with a massive 71% although some had it a lot closer as both elite rappers gave it their all for six rounds.

https://twitter.com/Kawaii_Rikku/status/1454643923025113088?s=20

Tsu Surf vs. Calicoe

This one was a re-match; Cal took the first battle back in 2014 and Surf came back to attempt to even up the score.

Lil Mama introduced this battle and would have done the coin flip but the Jersey rapper chose to kick-off instead which Calicoe called “a rookie mistake.” Surf proved Calicoe wrong and set the pace for the battle, working the stage every round showing the star power and level of wordplay that makes him who he is today.

Surf picked up 78% of the Caffeine vote and Twitter was in agreement with most fans giving him the second and third rounds and some giving him all three potentially handing him a “Gentlemens’ 30” a phrase he coined himself.

T-Rex vs. Rum Nitty

Next to take to the stage was another rematch between the Harlem legend, T-Rex vs. Rum Nitty, long considered one of the best punchers in the game. The two first battled in Snoop Dogg’s Gladiator School back in 2015, a battle that many gave to T-Rex, including Nitty himself. Rum has come a long way since then, earning himself the nickname “The Alien.” He is considered one of the most elite in the sport, a title he proved he deserves time and time again. T-Rex is a Mount Rushmore candidate, one of your favorite rappers’ favorite battle rappers; many grew up watching him and he held down the culture for years while many of his peers stepped away.

Rum Nitty is the king of the rematches, he has a way of coming back against former opponents with even more than he did the first time and this outing was no different. Rex had nothing to prove but came out snapping and had some room-shaking punches early on but ran out of steam as the battle progressed. Rex still entertained the crowd and gave the audience what they expected although his breath control was lacking and he appeared to struggle in places. The third round may have been the most debatable and possibly Rex’s strongest. The night proved a little too much for someone in the crowd as Rex barely skipped a beat when he jumped offstage mid-round to pass some water to an audience member who had passed out.

Loaded Lux vs. Geechi Gotti

The main event of the night was the epic clash between the “God-Tier” emcee Loaded Lux and Compton’s Geechi Gotti, tapped as the current face of battle rap. The magnitude of the event was highlighted with a billboard featuring Lux and Gotti in Los Angeles.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CVekavkrW3U/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Drake introduced “the Nutty Blocc legend and hometown-hero Geechi Gotti. Introducing Lux, he said we should be “honoured and blessed to witness another performance from this legend. I don’t know if he’s the MJ, the Kobe, the ‘Bron, however you want to slice it. A legend to all of us,” before bringing to the stage, from Harlem, the inimitable Loaded Lux.

https://twitter.com/AllThingsBRC/status/1454668627211431938?s=20

Lux is one of the undisputed GOATs of the culture, a pioneer, and a name everyone wants but not everybody can get, the legend doesn’t come outside often. His status is solidified and has nothing at all to prove, he was giving a shot to the young gunner.

Geechi Gotti proved he really epitomizes his “Every Fuccin’ Bar” slogan as he punched consistently for all three rounds, frequently rocking the building. The legend Lux demonstrated why is one of the best-ever lyricists with incredibly intricate wordplay which will play better on the watch back, though it didn’t do much to neutralize Geechi’s more digestible though witty punches. Lux had some issues with fluidity in the third making Gotti’s round look more effective. The general consensus was that Geechi took the win scoring high in the second and third rounds. With the run he’s on this battle takes him closer to the Champion of the Year title though there are still other names in contention and several big events before the year comes to a close.

Cassidy vs. Freeway

Some major announcements were made on the night including a historic Smack era rematch between Philly legends Cassidy and Freeway. The two promised to replicate their vintage trailblazing battle with a future classic.

Drake’s Future Plans With URL

Highlighting his passion and commitment to the culture, Drake announced even bigger plans for his partnership with URL and Caffeine with the momentous news of the first-ever $1 million battle.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Nicole Yvonne Duncan- Smith (@nikkiduncansmith)

As if that wasn’t enough, Drake issued a challenge to his peers saying “Me and Smack got this idea” and called upon “all my friends in rap and all my athlete friends” to put on an event that could be the biggest battle rap has ever witnessed. “We should all pick a battle rapper and put money and have a real event to see who’s really about this s###,” he proclaimed. “Everybody that’s down, just tap in with me. We’ll make a movie 2022”

One of the high points of the night came when Smack brought Drake out to the stage to wish him a belated Happy Birthday and thanked him for putting the card together. Drake took time to salute the fans who paid for a ticket and thanked them for their endless energy. He also praised the battlers and said that they inspire and motivate him in his own writing and explained how honored he was to put the event on.

He continued, “We’re trying to take this s### to the next level.” and recognized the level of skill of the artists on the platform before revealing: “Eventually with Caffeine with URL with myself, I want to get to the point that we can do the first ever million-dollar battle. We’re working on it”

He also let out the exciting news that they have “a lot more events in store,” before reaffirming his love for and commitment to the league. “I’m big Smack, I’m big URL for life,” and paraphrased Smack’s slogan saying, “Lets gets this s### popping for real!”

The superstar could have stayed with the VIPs on stage but instead decided to hang out in the crowd. He bought drinks for everyone in the house, sending drivers to buy bottles and then personally handing out shots to the crowd.

The OVO boss also took a little time out to appreciate URL Princess Nunu Nellz who was looking particularly dazzling in a snakeskin shirt and black shorts, her flame-red tresses a staple of the culture, thanking her for helping him with the card.

The night was a historic win for the URL and battle rap across the board. The emcees displayed the elite levels of ability that place them at the forefront of what’s possible in the art form. Along with the hard-fought wins earned by the emcees; the culture also won tonight. Smack and the team over at URL cemented their position as innovators in the culture and look set to continue to break new ground pushing the culture ever forward.

As Wyclef said.

Infamous Drug Dealer Alberto “Alpo” Martinez Reportedly Killed In Drive-By

Infamous drug dealer Alberto “Alpo” Martinez was gunned down in Harlem earlier this morning (October 31st).

According to reports, the 55-year-old was hit with a hail of bullets on the corner of West 147th Street near Frederick Douglass Boulevard around 3:00 am.

Martinez was taken to the Harlem hospital, but efforts to save his life proved unsuccessful.

In the 1980s, Martinez was one of the biggest drug dealers in New York and Washington, D.C., along with partners Azie Faison and Rich Porter and, later, Wayne “Silk” Perry. At his height, Alpo was dealing over 30 kilos a day while he raked in millions in illicit proceeds.

Martinez served 35 years at ADX Florence Supermax prison after he was convicted of 14 counts of murder. He received a reduced sentence after testifying against former associates in the drug business.

Martinez was released from prison in 2015.

His death is particularly shocking because Martinez was supposed to be in the United States federal witness protection program.

According to reports, Martinez was a marked man for committing several murders and testifying against his former cohorts in the criminal underworld.

Martinez was immortalized on film in the 2002 movie “Paid In Full.” Martinez was played by Harlem rapper Cam’ron, while Mekhi Phifer started as Rich Porter and Wood Harris starred as Azie Faison.

Jay-Z Moved To Tears As Hip-Hop Takes Over Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Hip-Hop took over the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last night (October 30th) in Cleveland, Ohio.

A number of A-list celebrities were on hand at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse to witness the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class.

Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner, Clarence Avant, Kraftwerk, Carole King, Foo Fighters, and The Go-Go’s were enshrined.

But rap music stole the show last night with the induction of Jay-Z and LL Cool J.

The billionaire businessman/philanthropist went over in larger-than-life style – as usual. The Brooklyn rap star, who founded Roc-A-Fella Records and Roc Nation, was introduced via video by President Barack Obama, David Letterman, and LeBron James.

Dave Chappelle was on hand to induct Jay-Z.

“He rhymed a recipe for survival. He embodies with the potential of our lives can be and what success can be,” Dave Chappelle said of Jay-Z.

During a speech, Jay-Z thanked his Roc-A-Fella Records co-founders, Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke.

“Shout out to Dame, I know we don’t see eye to eye, but I could never erase your accomplishments, and I appreciate you and thank you for that. Shout out to Biggs who is one of the most honorable people I’ve met. We created something that will probably never be duplicated,” Jay-Z said during his induction speech.
