Maurquis Boone & Rich Harris Talks Hilarious Role In ‘The Bid’ Movie & Prison Reform

If you’re in need of some laughter, look no further than The Bid. The new comedy stars the dynamic duo of Maurquis Boone and Richard Harris, who personally created, casted, funded, and shot the film in just over 30 days.

The movie recruits all-star guest appearances from Haha Davis, Mr. Commodore, Southside Ju, Ghee Funny and Shawn, and A-Town, bringing you that feel-good joy and laughter we’ve been missing all 2020.

Boone and Rich both hail from Philadelphia, serving as hilarious partners both on-screen and off-screen. With Philly Filthy Rich notably directing, producing, writing, and starring in the movie, The Bid tells the story of two rappers who get framed by an overzealous Philadelphia police officer, and things get crazy when the two are sent to prison and forced to fight the unjust Philadelphia prison system from the inside.

With Harris having experienced prison time in the past and Boone totally out of his comfort zone, violating all prison rules and ethics, audiences are left either fearing for their lives or bursting out in laughter. Released via B&R Films, GVN Releasing, and BPG Media, the movie is available for streaming now on GooglePlayiTunes AmazonPrimeVideo, and all other digital streaming platforms.

AllHipHop: What was it like growing up in Philly?

Maurquis: I’m from West Philadelphia. You got me having flashbacks girl, we just started doing good. [laughs] I’m talking about how we love it, I love Philadelphia.

Rich: I’m from Germantown, uptown. It’s like every other basic hood. Every city, everywhere you go got a ghetto. Philly is the ghetto of Pennsylvania man, but you’ve got more than Philly. You got Pittsburgh.

Maurquis: You make it seem like we’re ghetto man, we were good people.

Rich: No, I’m saying it’s a high-crime, bad area.

Maurquis: But there’s a lot of good areas: Center city, Manayunk, Roxborough, Wynnefield, Northern Liberties. There’s a lot of good places to live, what you talking about?

Rich: You right, you right, you right.

Maurquis: It’s a good city where you can come mind your business and do you. If you want to get into crime, it’s at a very high level. If you want to go straight, they’ll leave you alone. That’s why I love it, they leave me alone. I’m straight as can be.

AllHipHop: Did y’all always want to be in film and all that?

Maurquis: I did.

Rich: I did, but I didn’t never think I would. I thought about it. Of course I always wanted to do it, but I never thought I’d do it so I didn’t expect it. I didn’t think it was feasible, I didn’t think it was possible coming from where I’m from.

Maurquis: That’s why we had to do it ourselves because you can’t wait for nobody to hire you. Where we’re from, you got to get it done yourself man. Waiting on somebody, you’re going to mess around here and die. You gon’ wait on people, you gon’ wait and die. If you’re waiting on them, you’re going to keep on waiting. That’s the drive me and Rich got, we get stuff done. We’re very independent. If you don’t want to do it, we’ll get it done ourselves.

Rich: We’re very, very aggressive to get it done. [laughs]

AllHipHop: You guys play two Philly rappers framed in a police raid in The Bid, why were you the perfect actors for the role?

Maurquis: Because it’s our life for real, we’re both rappers from the city. I hate to relive the Percs story but in Philadelphia, I’m known as the Perc Godfather. Jesus Christ. In 2015, I made a song called “Popped a Perc.” It did pretty good so I already had the Percocet buzz. When we wrote the movie and you see little dog and the Percocets in there, that was an underlying joke for the Philadelphians.

Rich: It was easy because I play my character and he plays his real character. I’m Rich in the movie, he’s Boone. We really play our characters so it was pretty simple.

AllHipHop: Rich, I know you’ve been incarcerated. How did your first-person experiences influence your role in the movie?

Rich: We were able to emphasize and make a lot of the scenes realistic based upon my stay in prison. “No it wouldn’t go like this in prison, it’d go like this.” Or “this wouldn’t be here, this would be over here.” The cadence and the basic elements of prison, all that was in place. That’s how we utilized my prison experience, the dialogue and the talk.

Maurquis: The whole setup, this boy had everything.

Rich: The props, all that.

Marquis: Now you could tell he went to prison, I’m not playing. We were in an empty warehouse, it looked like a prison. The way we had it, any actors on the set will tell you it really looked real the way we hooked the set up. It was from his vision being in.

AllHipHop: How was it shooting with Haha Davis, Mr. Commodore, A-Town?

Rich: It was awesome man.

Maurquis: It was dope because nobody was nervous. Being that it’s a social media movie, we were comfortable in front of the camera all day long. We go viral on a daily basis. When we wrote the script, Haha Davis used to do guard, prison skits. Whatever you do on social media, we going to play to your strengths. When we got there, everybody was super comfortable so it was dope working with them man.

Rich: Everybody in Hollywood looks at this as a film with no-name actors. We never had acting jobs before but the acting is so dope in it because everybody in this film can out-act anybody in Hollywood. They’re in front of that camera everyday.

Maurquis: Let me rephrase that, they can out-act them doing our s###. They can run circles around them. I can’t go and do no Denzel, settle down man.

Rich: No, we can do Denzel. You can do it too. I’ve seen you do hard [acting?] on the computer. Listen, my cast will run circles around a lot of the industry. They’re very, very comfortable in front of the camera. All of them, I speak for the majority of them. 90% of them.

AllHipHop: How hard was it to not laugh during the film?

Rich: Well, that’d probably be a better question for me because Boone’s a comedian. Most of them are comedian. I’m not a comedian, but now people calling me a comedian. [laughs] See how hard it is for you not to laugh doing this interview? That’s how difficult it is for me.

Maurquis: This is game-face here man. [straight face] I’m for hours.

AllHipHop: How do we get you to smile?

Maurquis: I’m from Philadelphia man. This ain’t no game, this is a permanent face. Look at my nose. I sigh too much, there ain’t nothing funny for real.

Rich: Yeah, it’s difficult not to laugh. When we’re shooting the film, we didn’t really have the budget to afford to be f###### up. I had to not laugh thinking about budgets and getting into character. Once you really lock in and take it serious, it’s not a joke, all the laughter s### goes out the window and you do what you got to do. After the cameras go off, there’s so many comedians running around here doing their thing, you can’t help but to laugh.

AllHipHop: What were your favorite scenes and why?

Maurquis: My favorite scene was the table scene and the lunchroom scene. See, I got too many.

Rich: My favorite scene was when we was in medical after I got beat up.

Maurquis: One of my favorite scenes that I liked to watch, that was good to me, was Southside Ju and Danny Diamonds when they’re crying over the cat. When his cat died and he’s like “mama!” They thought his girl died but when the guy found out he was crying over a cat, he lost it and said “you crying over a cat, get the f### up man. You supposed to be hard, you in jail n*gga!” I thought that was cool man.

AllHipHop: Someone said “you had me rolling when you had to take a smash and he told you to use a leaf.”

Maurquis: Oh yeah, that’s when I tried to break out. The guard caught me, I had to come up with something quick.

AllHipHop: What was the process of making songs for the movie scenes?

Maurquis: After we shot the movie, we sat back and watched it for months and months and months. Then we had got with Blueprint Group and Jean Nelson had told me and Rich to come up with 10 songs. He took us up there to see him. It gave us a real inspiration to make music again. We’re in that process of making it anyway but when he told us that, we started looking at the movie again and we saw the scenes different. We start laying songs to the scenes, that’s why it really looked like all the music fit every scene from the intro to the outro.

Rich: It made sense for us to do it ourselves budget-wise, it was a lot easier that way so we knocked it out. The soundtrack is out right now on all platforms, it’s titled “Active” Boone and Rich. Tap in and check that joint out, a lot of y’all that have seen the movie will recognize the songs from the scenes. We’re going to do some visuals for it too.

AllHipHop: What’s your favorite song on the soundtrack?

Maurquis: “I don’t trust you b####, but I love you b####, but I can’t leave you alone.” [sings]

Rich: [laughs] I like “Active.” The soundtrack’s real dope, it’s hard to pick a single. Check it out when you get a chance.

AllHipHop: What comedians or directors are you guys inspired by?

Rich: I’m inspired by Ice Cube. I’m a big fan of Ice Cube, Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, dudes that really get it in. I pay attention to them and try to do what they do, do it on a bigger level and try to do it better.

Maurquis: Follow their blueprint and put it in our own way. I’m Paul Mooney, I’m old school. I watch more Paul Mooney, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Martin, Kevin Hart.

Rich: Katt Williams too, you always talk about Katt Williams.

Maurquis: Alright, Katt Williams is one of my favorite comedians. Dave Chapelle, all of ‘em. I’m heavy on Red Foxx. If you watch my cadence, you see a lot of old s###. You see a lot of JJ, a lot of s### man. I give a lot of respect to the core of comedy.

AllHipHop: What does prison reform mean to you guys?

Rich: I did 11 years in federal prison. I went in in ‘04 and came out in ‘15. I was sentenced to 22 years, but my sentence was sliced in half based on the Fair Sentencing Act that President Obama signed into law. It enabled me to come home and be here. The guys and ladies in there, they have too much time. Give them an opportunity to come back out here and be a part of their family and their children’s lives, make a difference in the community. When they gave me that 22 years, I can honestly say I was ready for society after 5.5 to 6 years. Where I can honestly say to myself “alright, I get it. I f##### up, I’m really ready to go out here and do what I need to do with my kids and be productive.” 22 years was ridiculous, so that’s what prison reform is to me.

Maurquis: That’s a long f###### time. I did 18 hours and that killed me. He did 20, I salute him. I knew he was a good person. Anytime you get 22 years and you ain’t thinking about telling on and bringing anybody else down, you took your ownership and said “okay I did wrong, let me do it,” that’s dope. I’m not a prison guy. I know they need to let people out, period. Give people second shots. If they gave me a second shot, look at me. I swear I told my judge named Frank Brady: “yo listen, put me in a program. Something.” I did a whole year at outpatient for opiates. They caught me coming out of the pharmacy, I said “listen, I would never.” He said “okay Mr. Boone, I believe you, but make me a believer.” I had to come up every month in front of the judge, they p### test once a week. He told me “I have never met a human-being that said what you said and did it.” I never missed a day, I got out of there and I was serious. I don’t think jail is for human beings, that was crazy to me. It made me stop everything. [snaps] I play all day, it made me stop, get busy and get to work. I know a lot of people if they give them second chances, they’ll do right.

AllHipHop: How was it having freeway Rick Ross shout you guys out?

Rich: Oh man, it was incredible. Rick’s down here right now, we supposed to be catching up with him tonight. It’s his birthday today.

Maurquis: Rick Ross is the cause of all of this. He did a lot of stuff for us, man. He’s a good guy, that’s why I had to take off my hat. When we’re grinding and we couldn’t get no help, we’re showing people the movie and they said “nah, it’s too raw. It has no stars, social media knows them, but they ain’t…” You know these social media comedians is selling out when they doing shows right? We got these people in a movie. We trying to explain this to them.

When we’re down on our last leg, our manager Jamil called us: “yo man, you want to ride up to New York and see Rick Ross?” Hell yeah! It’s 2am or 3am, we packed up and put the movie in the trunk. I’m being serious, we put the movie in a trunk. We met him in a club, he’s doing a book signing. I was ready to attack, Rich said “nah man, chill.” This Rick Ross, he maybe could do something for us! He finally came up to the two of us and said “yo man, how are you young brothers doing?” I said “I’ve got the movie in the trunk,” he said “go get it”.

Rich: He watched it for about 30 minutes, told us he got us. He said “I got y’all.” When he said it, he meant it. Next thing you know, we’re in Hollywood in the meeting. He tapped in with our manager Jamil, he took us straight to the man. We figured we’d owe him something or he’s going to want something, he said “I don’t want anything. I want to see y’all win.” Coming from Philadelphia, that’s very humbling to me because I never had nobody do nothing like that for me. I’ve never seen nobody do that coming from Philadelphia with my own two eyes. That dude the GOAT man, cool dude.

AllHipHop: What can we expect from The Bid sequel?

Rich: Right now, we’re casting for The Bid sequel. We’re going to get people to reenact one of the scenes from Part 1, do it better or put it in their own little twist. They can reenact however they want it do it. That’s how we want to start the casting and see who can really act, see who’s engaged.

Maurquis: We doing Boone and Rich, and the Feds.

Rich: Last time, we’re in the state jail. Now we going to the federal jail and in the federal jail, there’s people from all over the world. We’re going to have different comedians from all over the country, versus predominantly this section. Now we’re going to a federal jail because of him.

Maurquis: The prison’s going to be in Philadelphia

Rich: It’s going to be crazy. We’re casting right now. Anybody watching this that’s interested in trying to get into The Bid 2, get a partner or 2 or 3, or however many you need, reenact one of the scenes form Part 1 and DM it to me and Boone. We gon’ sit there and look at a few of them, start picking out our cast like that.

Maurquis: We got a lot of people for the Bid 2 already on our list

Rich: Freeway Rick Ross gonna be in it, it’s going to be crazy. We’ve got a lot of people in this one.

Maurquis: We about 90% on Kountry Wayne. We looking for Desi Banks and Pretty Vee. Pretty Vee probably one of the funniest ones out there.

Rich: We trying to get Katt Williams in there too, so him and Boone can squash this little situation. We gon’ squash it in prison.

Lil Yachty Developing Action Thriller Based Off Classic Card Game Uno

Lil Yachty is a businessman.

Consider all the publishing he has gained from writing for other acts like the City Girls, one might be hard-pressed to say he ain’t about the bag.

Now, he is once again, stepping out of music to find another stream of revenue.

Variety is reporting that he will be developing an action/ comedy film based on one of the top card games in every Black household … UNO. It has been said that his movie will come out on the Mattel Film (studios) and Marcy Kelly wrote the screenplay.

“I’m so excited to be part of this film with Mattel,” Lil Yachty said. “I played Uno as a kid and still do today, so to spin that into a movie based on the Atlanta Hip-Hop scene I came out of is really special. It hits close to home for me.”

While the cast has not been confirmed, Lil Yachty will probably be the lead role. His Quality Control big brother’s Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Pierre “P” Thomas, and Brian Sher will produce for Quality Films.

The executive producer will be Robbie Brenner and he said, “At Mattel Films, we are looking to explore stories that bring our brands to life in unexpected ways.”

“Uno is a game that transcends generations and cultures and we look forward to partnering with Lil Yachty, as well as with Coach, P, and Brian Sher, to transform the classic Uno game into a comedic action-adventure.”

Mattel acquired the game in 1992. However, the game was created 20 years earlier in Merle Robbins’ barbershop.

Lil Yachty previously starred in “How High 2” and he voiced the character “Green Lantern in the cartoon “Teen Titans GO! To the Movies.”

Kevin Hart’s $10,000 Advance For Social Media Post Has Turned Into $300,000 Legal War

Comedian Kevin Hart has been hit with a lawsuit after allegedly bailing on a 2018 party appearance.

AIM Hospitality Group LLC president Maksim Vladimirskiy claims the Jumanji: The Next Level star signed up to appear at an event afterparty in New York in July 2018, following Hart’s stand up gig in New Jersey that evening.

Hart was given a $10,000 advance before the bash, for which he was to be paid a total of $26,000.

In exchange, the funnyman was required to share two Instagram posts to promote the party, but in the months leading up to the gig, no such ads appeared, according to court papers obtained by the New York Post.

AIM officials soon realized Hart had “no intention of honoring” the social media contract, and just weeks before the afterparty, they requested the return of their deposit, despite having already spent $12,000 to spread the word about the bash.

Hart apparently agreed, but by 2019, they had still not received the refund, which they were subsequently told had been sent to the wrong people. They also reportedly learned Hart’s team had actually canceled plans to attend the event in May – but failed to alert AIM bosses of their decision.

Now Vladimirskiy is suing for damages, arguing that Hart’s employees “willfully disregarded their contractual obligations by using delay tactics and making false promises to perform”.

“Defendants recklessly issued a refund to the wrong party and without any attempt to fix the careless error made excuses for their own mismanagement of accounts,” continues the suit, which lists Hart, his agent, and officials at two of his companies as defendants.

AIM attorneys are demanding a total of $390,000 in damages.

Hart’s representatives have yet to comment on the lawsuit.

WATCH: The Weeknd Has “Last Meal” Ahead Of Solo Super Bowl Extravaganza

The Weeknd “wouldn’t bet” on there being any special guests when he headlines the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The “Blinding Lights” hitmaker has confirmed he won’t be joined on stage by any other stars as he performs when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Speaking to the NFL network, he insisted there wouldn’t be any surprise guests popping up, sharing: “I’ve been reading a lot of rumors. I wouldn’t bet on it. There wasn’t any room to fit it into the narrative and the story I was telling in the performance. So yeah, there’s no special guests.”

And the 30-year-old singer has teased a few details about Sunday’s performance.

He told reporters: “Due to the Covid and for the safety of the players and the workers, we built a stage within the stadium. We’re also using the field as well, but we wanted to do something that we’ve done before. I’m not going to tell you anything else because you’ll have to watch on Sunday.”

The Weeknd – who is following in the footsteps of stars like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez by playing the gig- previously admitted he was “humbled” to get the coveted performance slot.

“We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position. I’m humbled, honored, and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year,” he smiled.

John John Da Don Blacks on Ace Amin Out in New Freestyle

This is what Hip-Hop is made out of.

For over half a year, Ace Amin has been firing off diss tracks aimed at Bullpen owner and veteran battle rapper, John John da Don.

The beef seems real as he hit us with fire tracks, “The Baptist” and “Code Red.” Many fans wondered if there would ever be a response … if the Yonkers emcee will get up off his comfortable throne in Toptierville and come outside.

Well, here is a multiple choice … a) he will but only if he can make a bag off it, b) he will if he can set the terms like a boss, c) he will by dropping a fire @ss diss track coming at all opts or d) all of the above.

The PG killer has proven that the title is well earned and can be pulled out at any minute.

In a diss freestyle that has already gone battle rap viral, he puts Eazy the Block Captain in scope. Eazy, one of the fastest emerging talents in battle rap, recently dropped a diss track targeting all of the vets that he saw as a problem.

The ginger rapper spent a little under 20 seconds to address him, “Eazy, question, you the captain of the block where? Poconos? N*gga that’s the burbs. Ain’t no blocks there.

Then he swiftly transitions and fires off at the Maryland rapper who has a propensity for bumping people hard … really hard.

“Let me give The Captain a break … cause if I’m a pull another card it has to be ‘Ace.’”

“So are we battling? You ain’t want answer when I ask before/ Do me a favor, when you see a w####, slap a w####/ Said you got my addy right? Call me when you at the door./ Don’t you got a fresh cut … tell what’s this capping for.”

He then raps about the two’s personal issues, shaping a response and context to all of the back and forth that has led up to the diss. But like a real boss … he postured this 1:10 minute track as a great promotion for the rumble in Atlanta soon to come.

Bullpen set the date for March 20 in Atlanta, GA. While details have not been released, it will be open to the public and will be on pay-per-view.

Vic Mensa Reunites With Chance The Rapper For “Shelter” Single

Victor “Vic Mensa” Mensah and Chancelor “Chance the Rapper” Bennett came up together on Chicago’s underground music scene. The two emcees were even part of the SaveMoney collective along with Nico Segal, Towkio, Joey Purp, and others.

Chance appeared on Mensa’s breakout Innanetape project in 2013. That same year, Vic showed up on Chano’s star-making Acid Rap mixtape. They both went on to become 2014 XXL Freshman class members, and they built business connections with Hip Hop legends like Jay-Z and Kanye West.

After the two midwesterners had a falling out, they finally reconciled in 2017 at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. Borrowing a line from Jay-Z’s 4:44 track “Family Feud,” Mensa tweeted at the time, “Nobody wins when the family [feuds]. THE VIBES ARE BACK.”

Collaborative music involving Vic and Chance is now back as well. Today (February 5), Vic Mensa returned with the new single “Shelter” which features his SaveMoney comrade Chance the Rapper as well as Fugees founding member Wyclef Jean. An Andre Muir-directed music video for “Shelter” will go live on YouTube at 10 am ET.

The release of “Shelter” is also serving as a fundraiser for Julius Jones, the current death row inmate who maintains he was wrongfully convicted of first-degree murder in 2002 at the age of 22. Numerous celebrities and sports figures have advocated for his release from prison. For example, Oscar-winner Viola Davis produced the ABC docu-series The Last Defense which covered Jones’s case.

According to Mensa, “Shelter” was inspired by an actual conversation he had with Jones who apparently was a fan of the rapper’s song “We Could Be Free.” The Roc Nation recording artist is also prompting his followers to sign the Change.org petition calling for the state of Oklahoma not to execute the former University of Oklahoma student.

Cardi B Talks Recording 50 Songs For Her Sophomore Album

Many Cardi B fans have been patiently waiting for her to release the follow-up to 2018’s Grammy-winning Invasion of Privacy album. After dropping her new single “Up” today, Bardi Gang members are likely excited that it appears the rapper’s sophomore album era has officially begun.

Zane Lowe caught up with Cardi for Apple Music’s New Music Daily show to discuss the release of “Up.” The NMD conversation also included the New York City-bred rhymer talking about the recording process for her next studio LP.

“I really wanted to put out an album last year, but I feel like I don’t have the right songs. I have recorded so many songs. I think I’ve got like 50 songs recorded, and I’m just still not satisfied. If I’m not satisfied, I’m just not satisfied, but I really want to put out an album this year,” Cardi told Lowe. “I feel like I have no choice now. Now, I feel like I exceeded my limit of holding [music].”

The self-described Balenciaga Bardi admitted some level of fear is playing a role in her holding back in putting out another body of work. She also appears to be aware of the constantly changing sonic landscape of Hip Hop and that her music should be an accurate reflection of her personal emotions.

“Music is in a different stage right now. Because I don’t even be knowing what should be like the base of my album sometimes. I’ll be like, ‘Damn, should most of my songs be freaky songs? Should most of my songs be about tricking?'” said Cardi.

The 28-year-old entertainer added, “I’ve got my sensitive songs and stuff, and it’s just like, ‘Are they enough? Are they explaining my feelings enough?’ I’ve got like three potential intros, and it’s just like, ‘Are they good enough? Are they explaining everything that I want to explain?’ It’s just a lot.”

Artists not being able to go on nationwide and international tours at the moment because of the COVID-19 pandemic is another factor that is impacting Cardi’s decision on when her next album will arrive on DSPs. With citizens around the country starting to take the COVID-19 vaccines, some industry insiders hope concert venues will be able to open back up in 2022.

“It’s like you want to go on tour after you drop your album and everything, and then it’s like that’s another thing. You’re hearing different types of dates – ‘Oh, 2021 might be open. Touring might be open at the end of 2021… No, it’s going to be open in 2022,'” stated Cardi.

She continued, “When it is open in 2022, everybody’s going to want to tour, so you’ve got to wait for your slot. It’s like, ‘I don’t want it to be almost nine, eight months when it’s my slot.’ You’ve got to compete with arenas of basketball players, like that, the sports and other artists that are going to go on tour. It’s just a lot.”

21 Savage Posts Conversation With Sauce Walka After Clowning His Face Piercing

Lil Uzi Vert had a lot of people talking this week when he decided to add a new accessory to his look. The Eternal Atake album creator had a reported $24 million pink diamond implanted into his forehead.

This unexpected move by Uzi was quickly compared to Texas rapper Sauce Walka who rocks a teardrop diamond piercing below his left eye. Not too long after that, 21 Savage joined the public conversation by making fun of Sauce Walka’s supposed $250,000 facepiece.

21 was in a Clubhouse app chatroom when he decided to share his thoughts on the new trend. The Atlanta-bred rap star called Sauce Walka’s jewelry “cubic zirconia” which is the low-cost, synthetic gemstone that looks like a diamond.

Apparently, the two men eventually connected via Direct Message. 21 Savage posted the exchange on his Instagram Story. According to the text, the “Runnin” performer told Sauce, “ion want no smoke gang” and added six tears of joy emojis.

Sauce wrote back, “Don’t do that blood. lol u know ima funny MF… I still remember lil 21 running with Maybach Hot… In 2015, I had 60k on my neck in ATLANTA… [face with tears of joy emoji] We good bird but u almost was a #NewInstagram sauce classic… That ain’t for us! Lol!”

21 replied, “All dat s### ugly bra [face with tears of joy emoji]. U can’t get mad [face with tears of joy emojis]. I ain’t gone call u no b#### ass n#### tho gang that’s gone turn to some mo s###.” Sauce Walka liked the “ion want no smoke gang” and “u can’t get mad” comments.

Cardi B Is Back With New Music Video For “Up”

In the early hours of Friday morning, Cardi B’s name was the #1 trending topic on Twitter in the United States. The music-based chatter was spiking on the platform because the Bronx native dropped her latest single “Up.”

Cardi released her new record alongside a Tanu Muino-directed music video. The nearly three-minute visuals feature colorful scenes, different looks, choreography, and a little woman-on-woman kissing.

“Up” is Cardi B’s first single since the chart-topping, record-breaking “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion broke the internet in August 2020 with its sex-positive content. This is the Hip Hop star’s first solo lead record since “Press” in 2019.

The immediate social media response to “Up” has been mostly positive. Fellow contemporary rappers like J.I.D and Zoey Dollaz shouted out Cardi’s most recent work. A lot of the online praise is directed at the video which continued the Rhythm + Flow judge’s run of big-budget productions following “Money,” “Press,” and “WAP.”

‘Wild ‘N Out’ To Return After Nick Cannon Apologizes For Anti-Semitic Comments

New episodes of Wild ‘N Out are coming. The long-running improv comedy show’s hiatus is about to end following creator/host Nick Cannon and MTV/VH1’s parent company ViacomCBS making amends.

Last year, Wild ‘N Out was taken off the air because of comments the NCredible Entertainment founder made on his Cannon’s Class podcast. Cannon eventually apologized to the Jewish community for making statements that many people believed were based on anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

“First and foremost I extend my deepest and most sincere apologies to my Jewish sisters and brothers for the hurtful and divisive words that came out of my mouth during my interview with Richard Griffin,” tweeted Cannon last July.

He added, “On my podcast, I used words and referenced literature I assumed to be factual to uplift my community instead turned out to be hateful propaganda and stereotypical rhetoric that pained another community. For this, I am deeply sorry but now together we can write a new chapter of healing.”

“Nick has not only apologized and taken responsibility for his comments, but he has also worked to educate himself and others through engagement with Jewish leaders and on his platforms,” a representative from MTV told Variety.

The source continued, “Those efforts are of the utmost importance and that’s why we have invited him to rejoin our team. On a separate note, we just learned that he tested positive for COVID and have reached out to wish him a speedy recovery.”

According to the entertainment publication, Wild ‘N Out will begin filming again in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, past installments of the program will begin running again on the VH1 network. Cannon is still a presenter on Fox’s The Masked Singer and reportedly has a daytime talk show in the works.

AllHipHop EXCLUSIVE: Diddy Sues Sean John For $25 Million For Stealing His Image

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ war with Sean John just escalated in a major way.

The Hip-Hop mogul has filed a $25 million lawsuit against the clothing brand he founded Sean John, as well as the company’s owner GBG USA.

According to a complaint lodged today (February 4th), Sean John launched a new clothing line for women with a company called Missguided and illegally used Diddy’s image, likeness, and persona without his permission.

Diddy sold Sean John to GBG USA in November of 2016. In the lawsuit, Diddy claims Sean John, Missguided and GBG fabricated quotes to make it seem as if he was still associated with the brand when they launched the “Sean John x Missguided” line for women.

Diddy claims the companies manipulated the press with false statements attributed to him that never made.

“[Diddy] does not challenge [Sean John/GBG’s] right to use the Sean John trademark, but rather [Sean John/GBG’s] decision to leverage a fabricated quote they created and then falsely attributed to Mr. Combs, and to use Mr. Combs’s name and other monikers to create the false and misleading impression that Mr. Combs is the decision-maker behind the designs and creation of the GBG Collection,” Diddy’s lawyer Jonathan D. Davis explained.

To make matters worse, Diddy says his image was featured in a :40 second Sean John/Missguided video for an ad campaign promoting the clothing line.

The rap mogul wants the public to know that he is no longer associated with the brand he founded in 1998.

“[Sean John, GBG and Missguided] are using the Unapproved Material, which contains false or misleading representations of fact, to promote and sell the items in the GBG Collection because they understand that associating it with Mr. Combs will significantly increase sales and profits,” Diddy’s lawyer Jonathan Davis continued.

This is the second legal skirmish between Diddy and Sean John over the last 30 days.

Last week, AllHipHop broke the news that Diddy is fighting with Sean John over the trademark for the phrase “Vote Or Die.”

Diddy claims Sean John/GBG illegally hijacked the phrase, trademarked it, and started selling merchandise on the Sean John website during the 2020 election.

Grassroots Support Swells For NFAC Leader Grand Master Jay In GoFundMe Legal Defense Effort

Grand Master Jay of the Black Militia the NFAC was arrested last year for allegedly pointing a rifle at Louisville Metro Police officers and federal officers on a roof at a formation, a charge his supporters say is fraudulent and racist.

Eleanor Harvey, a friend of GMJ, made am impassioned plea for him to the community, “We ask you to HELP Jay WIN this blatant bogus attack on him as we know that he has fearlessly stood for US ALL.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CKyUBTyj7uB/

Months after the alleged Louisville incident happened, Grand Master Jay found himself pleading not guilty to federal charges in court. Jay, whose real name is John Fitzgerald Johnson, was arrested on Dec. 4 and formally charged with five counts of wanton endangerment. These are the same charges levied against the officer that actually killed Breonna Taylor. In September, the day before the 2020 Kentucky Derby, the alleged act occurred around 8:30 p.m.

The allegations have caused a groundswell of outrage and support for the NFAC founder, who has successfully run peaceful military styled formations. Some of those formations were in support of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, both of which were allegedly killed by police or police affiliates. While they have made a bold presence, the NFAC has never promoted aggressive or violent behavior. To the contrary, they have lobbied for Black people to have autonomy and freedoms, while obeying the law seemingly religiously.

In stark contrast, the violent insurrection on the United States Capitol by domestic terrorists of a white persuasion, was greeted relatively peacefully by authorities. Some of the most egregious offenders were permitted to leave safely and arrested later despite guns, bombs and restraints to kidnap elected officials.

Jay told Vice News, “The terrorism that we saw last week validated everything that I’ve ever said about why we need to have an entity such as a Black militia: that it’s defensive, not offensive, because those are the very types of people who wouldn’t hesitate to stop at the Capitol.”

“If we had pulled something like that,” he continued, “there’d still be body bags being brought in.”

Numerous GoFundMe have been erected in GMJ’s legal defense, as he must defend himself on two fronts. Here is the latest effort to financially support Grand Master Jay:

“Your support is needed to help us defeat this blatant racist attack on Americans excercising their 1st and 2nd Amendment rights. John Fitzgerald Johnson aka  The Grand Master Jay has been targeted by the US Govt. As the founder and commander of America’s largest all Black militia, his organization has stood up to the powers to be in the face of such atrocities as the Ahmad Aubery and Breonna Taylor killings. His teachings  have ignited a renewed unification of people around the world. He was arrested by the FBI on trumped up charges pertaining to an alleged incident that occured in SEPT. Subsequently Jay was charged by the State of Kentucky with the same offense that the officer that killed Breonna Taylor was charged with.  As a condition of his pretrials release he has had his 1st Amendment and 2nd Amendment Rights removed. His legal expenses to fight two cases on two levels at the same time are astronomical as the US Govt moves silence, destroy, and disarm this Movement once and for all. Please help us to raise the funds needed to pay the lawyers and help Jay win this blatant bogus attack on him who has stood for all of us.”

Click here to donate to the fund.

GMJ maintains that the ranks of the ranks of the NFAC (Not F##kin Around Coalition) have been growing in leaps and bounds and incidents like the insurrection on jolt more life into their membership. For more on the NFAC, click the link.

Ice Cube Lining Up Power Meeting With Biden-Harris Administration To Discuss “Contract with Black America”

Despite Ice Cube’s public support of the Trump Administration during the 2020 election, the Biden-Harris team reached out to the rapper on Tuesday (February 2nd) — affording him an opportunity to present his Contract with Black America agenda.

The N.W.A. member seems to be open to hashing out the details of his “Contract With Black America” plan in efforts to secure more business opportunities, better education, and jobs for African Americans.

Cube, whose real name O’Shea Jackson Sr., revealed the news to Ryan Cameron on the legendary radio host’s current show “Majic ATL” and noted that they are flushing out details and hoping for a face-to-face.

Last fall, right before the election, Ice Cube appeared on Roland Martin’s show to talk about his agenda and his lack of trust in the Democratic party.

Cube noted that President Trump’s “Platinum Plan” would allow Blacks more access to those valuable public contracts and other opportunities that they are oftentimes shut out of.

But after the Biden-Harris win and the Dems majority in both the Senate and the House, it is only logical that the businessman presents his proposal.

At this point, if Ice Cube is really serious about prophetic action and the fight against systemic-social injustice, he has no choice.

The Biden-Harris administration has not made a statement but you can rest assured that Cedric Richmond, director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, got his eye on Mr. “No Vaseline.”

Ja Rule Completes Harvard Business School Course

A lot of times when we mention Ja Rule’s name it is not always positive. Since 50 Cent made a mockery of him, his season “upstate” and the Fyre Festival fiasco, people just have been joking about one of the most creative artists/ businessmen to come out of the Def Jam halls.

Well, this is a praise report.

A celebration.

Virtual pomp and circumstance and digital confetti for the Murder Inc. co-founder.

A few weeks ago, we celebrated his protégé, Ashanti, during the Verzuz battle against Keyshia Cole, and listened to her talk about the records that changed her life. The undercurrent is that Ja Rule was threaded through all of those narratives. Today, we celebrate him for something he did for himself … not for J Lo … Lil Mo … or the former Princess of his label … he just finished at Harvard.

Jeffrey Atkins, the “Put It On Me” rapper, just successfully completed a Harvard Business School Online Certificate Program on “Entrepreneurship Essentials.” In a tweet, he hit the fans with the “I ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer buuuuut…”

On the low, Rule has been on some “super mogul” stuff.

His ICONN tech company has opened doors for artists and fans. The app takes out the middleman that adds barriers for B2C exchanges.

Now, he is ready to take it all the way there… bruh … you get all the virtual pomp and circumstance and digital confetti.

RIP: James Brown’s Famous Cape Man Danny Ray Dead At 85

Danny Ray, the man who handed James Brown his cape during the soul legend’s most famous live shows, has died.

The 85-year-old died on Tuesday night (February 2nd) of natural causes, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

“The James Brown estate mourns the passing of Mr. Danny Ray, the legendary emcee and cape man for James Brown,” officials for Brown’s estate said in a statement. “Ray worked with Brown from 1960 until the music legend’s death on Christmas day 2006 (sic). He became famous for draping a cape over Brown at the end of his signature tune Please, Please, Please. Mr. Ray was the second-hardest working man in show business.”

Rev. Al Sharpton was among the first people to pay tribute to Ray, tweeting: “Saddened to get the call that Danny Ray, famed MC and cape man for James Brown, died at 85 years old. He was like an Uncle to me as I traveled the world years ago w/ (with) The Godfather of Soul. Danny will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace and Power, family.”

Ray was originally Brown’s valet before becoming his pre-concert emcee. His voice can be heard in introductions on multiple Brown live recordings, which have been sampled by a number of Hip-Hop artists throughout the years.

Bassist Bootsy Collins has also paid tribute, tweeting: “We lost another Legend Mr. Danny Ray. Some called him Cape-man, because he put on the Cape for James Brown, but for me when a Man Don’t need his head Rubbed to activate Others, he becomes Bigger than his Proceived (sic) appearance! Thx u Mr. Ray…”

Can Drill Rapper CJ’s Music Family Save Him From The Ghost Of Tekashi 6?

They are calling this rapper CJ the new Tekashi69! Just when you thought it was safe, another Tekashi69 has allegedly formed in Brooklyn. So the song “Whoopty” which I am very late to  is a banger in the drill rap scene and the author of that song is supposedly a guy name CJ. You know CJ right? He is a young Staten Island rapper who is apparently Blood.

Is this song real, because it came out years ago?

But, as we know these things tend to be convoluted in the streets . How did he rise to rap so rapidly? I don’t really know the answer to that because I am not tapped in. However, I do know something that most people have not reported on.

My sources have told me that CJ is related to James Cruz. Now people may not know who James Cruz, but for many years James Cruz (and maybe still do this day) was the right here man of Sean “P Diddy” combs a.k.a. Diddy a.k.a. Puff Daddy A.k.a. probably the biggest boss Hip-Hop has ever seen. James Cruz is a really good guy and he’s very cool from what I have been told.

But La Brim – a Blood doing 30 years, refuted all things CJ…everything – DOES NOT CARE!

Back to James Cruz. I guess the question is: has he been impactful in helping CJ rise to the top the way he has? The second question I have is: can he help him get out of this mess that he’s in? The truth is these are some crazy times for rap artists and a lot of them are getting killed on a day-to-day basis! Not to put that in the air, but we have to say it because it’s nervous out here. Rappers are getting killed! As you may have noticed in the last couple of days a well. Blood Brother Brim may be the least of his worries. BK’s 22Gz is also accusing CJ of swagger jacking (do people still say that?). In a now deleted post, he said “@realcj_ giving me 60 Vibes & boy from staten island the safest borough in nyc.” This did not help!

Honestly, this is just bad all around – from a New York point of view. I don’t know if James Cruz is able to help, but I hope so. If that’s his nephew, which is what I’ve been told, then it may be a good idea for him to step in and do damage control. Honestly, it might even be a good idea to just step away from the Blood situation altogether for live’s sake. Over in LA, it looks like CJ is good. Those Bloods are a bit different so prayers for payments and peace.

Lil Uzi Vert’s Having Some Issues With His $24 Million Embedded Diamond!

Lil Uzi Vert trolled everybody when he apparently put a $24 million diamond in his forehead, looking like Vision from The Avengers. However, in a serious twist of fate, it looks like Uzi has had some complications with his embedded pink diamond.

This could be more trolling or it could be some serious issue with the foreign object in the skin. Uzi posted a picture of himself with blood bleeding from the gym on his facial region. It  looks real to me, but some people were skeptical, as they were when Uzi Vert initially said that he was embedding the diamond in his face. He also said “We good” on socials so, who know.

Yesterday, he was almost dying and today “we good.” I just hope that if he does die, there is a plan for that gem. My people say it’s likely only worth a fraction of what he paid, but that’s still a lot of money.

Either way, this is the most press Lil Uzi Vert has gotten in a very very long time (IMO). I am not sure what the end game is here but it’s probably going to be good because he is one of the hottest young old rappers out right now. I can’t help but say that this is stupid, putting a foreign object in your body is dangerous. Not to mention, the Internet is already waiting to watch you get robbed of the diamond in your forehead. I know it sounds sick, but one good tug and that bad boy’s out of your face.

If it’s worth $24 million, the way he says it is I don’t think there’s enough security they could stop enough goons to get it from you. What they do with it will be a harder proposition.
