D.Cross Explains Indie Grind And Tour Life With Compton Rapper Game

It’s not every day you meet a hungry, passionate rapper out of Las Vegas. Insert D.cross, who began his journey battle rapping and soon discovered his knack for bars, punchlines, and simply. With music being his calling in life, the 29-year-old proves there’s no correct trajectory to your path — if you put in the work, the rest will come.

D.Cross puts on for all the street rappers in the world. Regardless of your situation, he serves a role model for anyone trying to make it out the trenches.

With a string of releases that hit the fans in a unique way, including “Watch Out” featuring Boosie and “Legendary” featuring Houston’s own Sauce Walka, D. Cross claims he’s just doing it for the city.

To date, his biggest accolade had to be opening for The Game on his Europe 45 Tour, swooning the crowd with his real-life lyricism and undeniable ability to rap.

AllHipHop: For those who don’t know, who is D.Cross?

D.Cross: A rapper from Las Vegas. I’m from North Las Vegas, Nevada, born and raised. A father, a friend, a brother. My kids are 12 and 11.

AllHipHop: Why should people f##k w/ you?

D.Cross: I’m authentic. Everyone says that but right now, I’m Cross da Boss. That’s what they call me. CBD, that’s what I call myself. Music nowadays, it’s all the same. There’s no real message in that s##t no more, like “what are you saying to me?” And rap done saved me. As we speak right now, I’m in the back of a $240,000 car. Riding in the backseat, so let ‘em know.

AllHipHop: How would you describe your sound?

D.Cross: I don’t have a sound honestly. I can do everything. It’s non-describable. When you hear it, you just know it’s me. My sound is me, you know it’s me. You don’t get no inspiration from any other rapper like me.

AllHipHop: Being from Las Vegas, what were you seeing growing up?

D.Cross: When you think about Vegas, you think about the strip. You don’t think about the poverty areas because nobody goes there. The main market is 30 minutes south of any real hood. Growing up, you see the same things you see at any area with high poverty. You see violence, war, gangbanging, drug-selling. You see all of that but I was never the kid who wanted the old school.

I don’t want nothing that’s successful to the next person. I know it might make me sound like an arrogant, cocky person but that’s who I am: I’m very humble. But I never wanted some regular stuff. Growing up, you see the same things you see in any neighborhood with poverty, but I saw something different at a young age. I know I was going to be something.

AllHipHop: You started making music at 13 right?

D.Cross: 13 was when I started writing. I used to battle rap. When I was battle rapping, it was more so to put a couple dollars in my pocket. When I beat 25 dudes in literally one day at this place called the Silver Nugget, it was a competition. If you win, you get to be the next guy up. I got on a hot streak and the notoriety from rapping became more serious.

When I knew it was serious is when I went on my first tour two years ago. My first overseas tour on big arenas and big stages, I realized “I could really do this.” That’s when I started feeling myself.

AllHipHop: What’s one thing you want fans to get from “Ovo”?

D.Cross: “Ovo” is a song about my life. A bunch of money, a bunch of regular s##t. I don’t want nobody to take nothing from the music, but if it relates to you, dope. If it doesn’t, then turn it off.

AllHipHop: What does it mean to go on tour with The Game?

D.Cross: That’s my brother. It’s regular. Everything regular, nothing exciting. Before any of this is happening right now, n##gas were already rich. It’s kind of hard to adjust because the money was already there. Now so, everybody’s watching ya’ll. When you a real street n##ga, having some real money in there feels different. It’s cool, but it’s too much. But it’s regular.

AllHipHop: What is it you want fans to get from your story?

D.Cross: You can progress. You can take something and make it out of nothing, same thing as everybody else. You can really grow. I’m actually 29 years old. I didn’t get signed at 18 years old. I didn’t get signed at 21 years old when you’re still a child, I’m a grown man. Now you’re looking at me and you can go back on Youtube and catch up to the story. Just letting them know, 29, 30, 35 is not too old. Chase those dreams, and know you can figure out anything.

AllHipHop: Top 5?

D.Cross: To keep it real, rap don’t chart. [chuckles] I don’t really have a top 5. I like rap, I don’t like all this autotune s##t. It’s all the same tune, all the same noise. Game, Kiss, Meek, RIP Nipsey. Anybody who don’t use a lot of autotune and can say something, I like.

AllHipHop: What are some goals yourself as an artist at this point of your career?

D.Cross: I just want to be something for the city. Vegas doesn’t really got nobody come out and if we do, it’s a bunch of weirdos. It ain’t never no real solid street n##ga coming out. Everybody else got a story to tell. LA got a story, New York, Chicago. Everybody has people who came before them. n##gas who tryna come out, I’m one of them. For the most part, I want to do it for the city. I don’t really care about anywhere else.

AllHipHop: What’s the best encounter you had with a fan?

D.Cross: Oh man, got my name tatted. I’ve met fans with my name put on them, that’s hard. Sometimes I got a fast flow and to go bar for bar with the song, it’s impressive. Not even that but chillin’ with fans, It’s always love. The best moments I had so far with fans has been overseas. Because when you get money, there’s more people who want to show you love. These n##gas don’t know me broke that was a long time ago. Most of the love I’m getting is when I’m crossing that water man, overseas love.

AllHipHop: 3 things you need in the studio?

D.Cross: The microphone, engineer, and a beat. I don’t do drugs.

Court Sanctions Chris Brown In Lawsuit Over Alleged Rape

(AllHipHop News) Chris Brown has been ordered to pay sanctions to the woman suing him over an alleged rape at his Tarzana, California home in 2017.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, a Los Angeles judge has demanded the singer pay $2,500 to the unidentified accuser while setting a date for Brown to be deposed.

The plaintiff filed suit against Brown and an associate, Lowell Grissom Jr., claiming the singer tried to ply her with drugs during a house party before his friend sexually assaulted her.

He has denied the allegations and the D.A. never pressed charges against Grissom aka Young Lo.

The Jane Doe recently asked the court to force Chris to sit for a deposition, and the judge overseeing her case has agreed, ordering the star to meet with lawyers on February 19th.

The news comes just days after Chris’ lawyers filed motions to drop him as their client, insisting he failed to meet his obligations under their contract.

One of his representatives, Blair Berk, claims Brown has made it “unreasonably difficult” for her and her colleagues to “carry out the representation effectively,” adding: “Our relationship with Mr. Brown has come to a point where Tarlow & Brown and I can no longer adequately defend or represent him.”

Kobe Bryant Memorial Date Set

(AllHipHop News) Kobe Bryant will be saluted during a public memorial at Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 24th.

The event will also honor the basketball legend’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and the other seven people killed in a helicopter crash on January 26th.

The Staples Center, where Kobe played basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years, became a makeshift memorial site for the tragic sportsman and his daughter immediately following the crash in Calabasas, California.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed a memorial was in the works last week: “We are one city that believes in each other, believes in something bigger than ourselves and we will absolutely do everything to make sure that this is done so that everybody can come to it as well,” he told reporters.

Staples Center has previously hosted memorials for Michael Jackson and Nipsey Hussle.

(AllHipHop News) Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are planning to embark upon an excursion to Jamaica with thousands of their fans.

The pair are headliners for Marley’s annual Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise.

This year, Nas and Damian will link up for the first time in over a decade, to perform their album Distant Relatives aboard a 4,370 Royal Caribbean passenger cruise ship.

In addition to Nas and Damian, several Reggae legends will perform during the five-day voyage, including the legendary Shabba Ranks.

Last year, the Welcome to Jamrock Cruise featured a recently freed Buju Banton, Koffee, Stephen “Ragga” Marley, and others.

To fill the demand for this year’s sold-out Jamrock cruise, founder Damian Marley decided to sail twice with the same lineup, for both journeys.

The first trip will sail from November 30th to December 5th, while a second ship will cruise from December 5th-December 10th.

Tickets for the 2020 Welcome to Jamrock Cruise go on sale on February 11th.

Eliza Reign Demands DNA Test From Future

(AllHipHop News) A woman suing rapper Future over the paternity of her baby girl is demanding he be forced to take a DNA test.

Eliza Seraphin filed court papers in Broward County, Florida last summer, claiming the “Jumpman” hitmaker is the father of her daughter Reign.

He has repeatedly dodged the question of the baby’s paternity in legal responses to Seraphin’s lawsuit, so now she is seeking a court order for Future to submit to a scientific test to put the topic to rest, reports The Blast.

A ruling has yet to be made, but if the DNA is a match, she will be seeking retroactive child support and compensation for her hospital expenses following her little girl’s arrival last April.

The demand comes after Future called for Seraphin, also known as Eliza Reign, to be slapped with a gag order and undergo a psychological evaluation, accusing her of harboring an unhealthy obsession with him, which has caused her to repeatedly call him out on social media.

He also recently stepped up their legal fight by suing her for defamation and invasion of privacy after she discussed their sex life in the press.

In the documents, Future admits to having a sexual relationship with Seraphin from 2016 to 2018 but insists he never would have slept with her if he knew she’d tell all about it.

Seraphin is one of two women claiming to have given birth to Future’s babies – Cindy Renae Parker lodged a similar suit in Texas in October, claiming he is the father of her son Legend, who was born in July.

The rapper is refusing to acknowledge both children, insisting he only has five baby mamas, including his ex-fiancee Ciara, the mother of his five-year-old son Future Zahir.

50 Cent Insults Gayle King; Trades “Chewbacca” To White People For Nancy Pelosi

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent has attacked U.S. TV personality Gayle King for bringing up Kobe Bryant’s 2003 sex scandal in an interview with basketball legend Lisa Leslie.

The CBS anchor scored a big news chat with the Women’s National Basketball Association icon, and during the TV interview, she dared to go where most have not in the wake of Kobe’s death in a helicopter crash last month.

King, who hit the headlines last year following her fiery interview with R. Kelly, suggested Bryant’s legacy was “complicated” before quizzing Leslie about allegations brought against Kobe by a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado.

The late sports icon was charged with felony sexual assault and apologized to the woman, insisting he thought the encounter was consensual.

The case was dismissed in 2004 because the accuser refused to testify in court. A civil case was settled in 2005.

50 Cent was appalled King brought the case up in her interview with Leslie and took to Instagram to slam her, stating: “It was not complicated. You just said it was dismissed.”

Posting a video of the clip, he captioned it: “What is this, wait somebody gotta help me understand why they keep doing this. I apologize for my language in advance let’s talk about this.”

The rapper also posted a video of himself embracing the late sportsman.

Meanwhile, King herself has slammed CBS bosses for teasing her news interview with footage of the sex scandal question, admitting she can understand why critics like 50 Cent are upset.

Posting a video on IGTV before she appeared on CBS “This Morning” on Thursday, she addressed the criticism she had faced over the clip the network aired of her interview with Leslie.

“I’ve been up reading the comments about the interview I did with Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant and I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw I’d be extremely angry with me, too,” she confessed. “I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry.

A post shared by Gayle King (@gayleking)

“Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview totally taken out of context and when you see it that way it’s very jarring. It’s jarring to me. I didn’t even know anything about it. I started getting calls: ‘What the hell are you doing? Why did you say this? What is happening?'”

In the interview, Leslie insisted her friend Kobe was “not the kind of guy” who would “do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way,” insisting, “That’s just not the person that I know.”

King pressed: “But Lisa, you wouldn’t see it though. As his friend, you wouldn’t see it.”

Explaining herself in the IGTV video, King explains, “I reached out to Lisa because I know that she’s a longtime friend of Kobe’s to talk about his legacy and friendship. We had a really wide-ranging interview, talked about many things – his career, his passion, his sense of humor, the way he was mentoring other people, how he was starting his next chapter… And yes we talked about that court case because that court case has also come up.

“I wanted to get Lisa’s take on it as a friend who knew him well. During the course of the interview, I asked follow-up questions because I wanted to make sure that her position and perspective were very clear and at the end when she said it was time to leave it alone I thought that was powerful. And I insisted that be part of the interview because I thought that it put a nice button on that part of the conversation.”

Nicki Minaj Admits She “Played” Herself Going At Ex-Boyfriend Meek Mill

(AllHipHop News) Nicki Minaj wishes she had kept her “mouth shut” instead of wasting her time and energy feuding with her former boyfriend Meek Mill on social media on Wednesday.

The exes reignited their war of words after Meek ‘liked’ a meme targeted at Minaj’s new husband, Kenneth Petty, prompting her to lash out at the “Dreams and Nightmares” hitmaker and accuse him of beating women – allegations he vehemently denied.

Hours after trading shots online, Nicki Minaj sat down for a wide-ranging interview with her manager, music mogul Irving Azoff, at the Pollstar Live! event at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, and admitted she was still trying to learn not to engage in time-wasting spats.

Asked for the advice she would offer to rising stars, she said, “I would give advice to all artists, but especially women. Just try your best to let the small stuff go.

“I took some time recently to just reflect and took time away (from social media), and… I was looking at the things I had given my energy to and I couldn’t believe it. I was just like, ‘What the hell?’

“So I think, keep your eye on the bigger picture, is what I would say (to new artists). (If I could) I would have redone the whole thing and just kept my mouth shut. Put my music out and shut my mouth.”

Nicki Minaj was then asked directly about her most recent Twitter activity, to which she quipped, “I was hacked! I got hacked this morning, guys, don’t believe anything you saw! The good ol’ hack excuse.”

Admitting the tweets did indeed come from her, the rapper confessed she immediately regretted her fiery posts.

“It just happens. It never fails, every time I do it, five minutes later, I’m like, ‘Why the f##k (did I do that)?’ Every single time,” she shared.

“But it’s a good lesson in knowing how to master your anger and emotions, so every time I do that, I give myself a talking to in my head, like, ‘OK, you played yourself (messed up), you shouldn’t have did that. You learned your lesson, again. How many times you gonna learn your lesson?’ So I gave myself that talk today, sir.”

Another tweet she came to regret was about her rap retirement, which she shocked fans with last year and Minaj is now planning to scale back her social media use again by deleting the apps from her cell phone.

“Again, another time where I shouldn’t have had social media on my phone, and that’s why for the last month I haven’t had social media on my phone,” she said. “I just recently put it back on, and I’m about to take it back off!”

Lil Yachty’s Mom Drops Book “Raising A Rapper”

(AllHipHop News) Lil Yachty’s mom Venita McCollum wants to help parents navigate the complexities of the music industry with her new book “Raising A Rapper.”

Yachty had just finished high school when he informed his mother he wanted to pursue a career as a rapper.

Within a year of his graduation and some encouragement from “Mama Boat,” Lil Yachty landed a joint venture deal with Quality Control, which is arguably hip-hop’s hottest label, with artists like Cardi B, Migos and Lil Baby signed to the roster.

“There is this belief that all rappers come from poverty, and this simply is not the case,” said McCollum. “There are so many things that instill a sense of fear in parents whose kids want to enter into creative industries. I’ve learned so much along this journey and hope I can calm these parents’ fears based on my real-life experiences through my son’s rise to stardom.”

Venita McCollum hopes her new book “Raising A Rapper” will dispel myths surrounding rappers and the music industry while giving parents the tools they need to help their children thrive if they are pursuing a career in the music industry.

“I don’t want parents to feel like they have to pass their child off to someone else to manage, they can learn the industry” explained McCollum. “I want to empower all parents of creatives and to inspire young people to dream big.”

To this day, Mama Boat serves as the CFO of his companies Lil Boat Sailing Team, Yachty Touring and Boat Boy Publishing.

According to Lil Yachty, his mother has been indispensable since the beginning of his career.

“I always knew this would be my story, even when I was working at McDonald’s by-day and networking with artists by-night. You can’t convince anyone else that it’ll work for you until you convince yourself,” said Yachty. “When I walked across the stage to graduate, I had a plan, and my mom had another plan. But there’s no way I could have really gotten started without her on board—I wasn’t even old enough to sign deals by myself at the time.”

“Raising A Rapper” can be purchased on Amazon, as well as on Venita “Mama Boat” McCollum’s website, RaisingARapper.com.

Nicki Minaj Returns With New Single “Yikes”

(AllHipHop News) After a week filled with controversy, Nicki Minaj finally let loose her latest single “Yikes” today (February 7). #YikesOutNow quickly became one of the top trending topics on Twitter and the record climbed to #1 on the U.S. iTunes chart.

A snippet of the song led to critics accusing the rapper of disrespecting Rosa Parks. The late Civil Rights icon’s nephew even took issue with lyrics on the track. However, Minaj expressed that she was not concerned about the critiques.

“Yikes” is Nicki Minaj’s first solo release since 2019’s “Megatron” which peaked at #20 on the Hot 100 chart. Over the last several months, the Republic recording artist also appeared on “Hot Girl Summer” with Megan Thee Stallion, “Tusa” with Karol G, and “Nice to Meet Ya” with Meghan Trainor.

Last fall, Minaj announced she was planning to walk away from making music, but she later came back and apologized for the “abrupt & insensitive” retirement tweet. Her most recent studio album was Queen in 2018.

Common Backs Jay-Z After Super Bowl LIV National Anthem Controversy

(AllHipHop News) Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter spent the last week dealing with backlash for sitting during the singing of the national anthem at the 2020 Super Bowl. According to Jay, that action was not meant to be a form of protest like Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling demonstration at NFL games.

The Roc Nation founder’s explanation also did not sit well with some people. A paparazzi cameraman asked fellow Hip Hop legend Common if Jay was in a no-win situation.

“First of all, Jay-Z is a man of action,” responded Common. “I really respect the fact that he is like, ‘Okay, we gonna change the situation from the mentality that’s going on for communities to financially…’ He talks about mental health. He is for the people.”

The Let Love Have the Last Word author added, “I know that he’s about that and he been living that life, and he does it when the lights ain’t on. He do it sometimes where we don’t even know that he’s been helping out people.”

There have been reports that Jay and his wife Beyoncé anonymously bailed out Black Lives Matter protesters in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland. He openly provided funds to bail out incarcerated parents on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Last month, Jay teamed with Yo Gotti and Roc Nation to sue the Mississippi Department of Corrections over the climbing death rate happening in the state’s prison system. Carter also co-founded the REFORM Alliance, the nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the laws, policies, and practices that perpetuate injustice.

“I really respect those who do the work and don’t always announce it and Jay-Z’s one of those people. He told you what his intentions was,” stated Common. “If you ain’t happy with that – meaning he was checking out what was going on because he was part of the production – if that’s what he was doing and you not happy with it, so be it.”

Jay Electronica Announces His Debut Album Is Done And Set For Release

(AllHipHop News) For many rap fans, Jay Electronica’s album actually coming out is one of those myths that will never happen. The Roc Nation emcee is now saying he really has a project coming soon.

“Album done… Recorded over 40 days and 40 nights, starting from Dec 26… Releasing in 40 days… A Written Testimony,” tweeted Electronica on February 7.

In 2009, Jay Electronica made waves in the Hip Hop blogosphere when he dropped “Exhibit C.” The Just Blaze-produced song was met with critical acclaim and led to conversations about the New Orleans native possibly being the best lyricist in the culture.

Since that time, Electronica has delayed what would’ve been his debut studio LP several times. He has collaborated on tracks with other artists like Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Big Sean, and Chance The Rapper.

Janelle Monae Doing Better After Mercury Poisoning

(AllHipHop News) Janelle Monae is returning to full health after suffering from mercury poisoning.

The “We Are Young” singer revealed in an interview with The Cut that she suffered a run-in with the illness after she stopped eating meat and adopted a pescatarian diet.

Reflecting on the health scare, she said, “I started feeling my mortality.”

Despite the illness, however, the star has been hard at work, turning her focus to acting, ahead of her role in “mind-bending social thriller” “Antebellum,” which debuts in April.

Explaining her role as Veronica, a writer with a strong sense of social justice, she said: “I want that spirit to always stay on-camera so I don’t break. I don’t talk on the phone a lot … I don’t want that to take me out of my space.”

Insisting she takes her work home with her and finds inspiration in her personal life when crafting characters, she added: “I use my pain… I use it.”

“Antebellum,” also starring Jena Malone, Marque Richardson, and Eric Lange hits theaters April 24th.

Stormzy Defends Black Britain’s Role In The UK

(AllHipHop News) Stormzy is determined to use his fame to promote black British creatives as he’s frustrated that they are often ignored by mainstream culture.

The grime star became the first black solo artist to perform at Britain’s Glastonbury festival last year and used his gig to showcase other black creatives like then up-and-coming rapper Dave, and dance company Ballet Black.

Stormzy, who now has his literature imprint, says he’s determined to promote writers and other artists, as the media spotlight often falls on one or two famous black figures like himself, rather than embracing truly diverse voices.

“We should never be under the water,” he tells British GQ. “Black British is part of British culture. But they don’t always get thrown to the forefront. We’re a part of it, but we’ve been getting left out of the conversation. I make a point of it.

“There’s this whole spectrum. There’s me, (writer) Malorie Blackman, (athlete) Dina Asher-Smith, (soccer star) Raheem Sterling, (writer) Derek Owusu, there’s Ballet Black. And they take one of us, like Idris Elba or Stormzy or Sterling: the one black guy per mainstream media per two years.”

The star says he was determined to use his Glastonbury set to show there are many other young black Brits who are also deserving of mainstream success.

“It was my time to say, ‘Yes, there’s man. But there’s bare of us, in bare different ways. You can’t keep doing this. Yes, Stormzy’s great and that person’s great. But it’s not an exception. There’s bare of us,'” he says. “And I can’t just come here and be like, ‘It’s just me.’ I can’t do it.”

Explaining why he chose to share the spotlight, he adds: “Loads of black people tuned in, but I knew this would be a lot of white British people’s first proper one-on-one experience with the art we do, our culture, our style.

“So it can’t be the Stormzy show. It’s like a whole lesson and presentation and display of everything Black British, South London, grime, rap, soul, R&B, garage. That’s what it was: ‘Hey, England. This is our art. This is it.'”

Rapper Tinie Tempah Drops Clothing Line Inspired By Rihanna

(AllHipHop News) Tinie Tempah has been inspired by fellow pop star-turned-fashion designer Rihanna to add a womenswear collection to his successful What We Wear fashion brand.

The “Pass Out” star debuted his label back in 2017 and, speaking to Britain’s Daily Star newspaper following the Tiffany X British Vogue party after the BAFTAs, he confessed bumping into the hitmaker inspired him to expand the brand.

“In the future we would love to go into womenswear and do more unisex,” he said. “I feel like there’s a gap in the market for What We Wear.

“I’m proud of Rihanna, turn your legacy and what you built into big business. For her to make a house of Fenty for the next generation… She deserves it. I don’t think there’s been as many influential people as Rihanna in pop music and popular culture within the last 10 years. Good on her.”

The rapper added he believes people are taking them more seriously despite their musical roots, explaining: “We are living in a time where fashion is being disrupted.

“Gone are the days where you care what people think of you. You have to be brave, fearless and confident which is what we are doing.”

However, the “Trampoline” star insisted, “Music is still the main thing, it’s always going to be,” adding he’s working on a new project and is in the process of “getting all the tracks together.”

(AllHipHop News) Fourteen years after his death, celebrations still take place around the world for producer, James “J. Dilla” Yancey. In his hometown of Detroit, several events are planned to honor his life.

On Saturday, February 8, 2020 the James DeWitt Yancey Foundation is presenting an event called “Dilla for the Youth.” Legendary rapper and activist Chuck D., will give a keynote address entitled “Rhymes over Beats” about the importance of having a message in hip-hop music.

Dilla for the Youth will also feature Hip-Hop Painting with a Twist with participants painting pictures of Dilla as well as freestyle ciphers, production demonstrations, and a photo booth. The event takes place at Avalon Village, a sustainable eco-village in Highland Park, MI-a small city located inside Detroit’s city limits.

The event is an extension of Chuck D’s relationship of admiration of Detroit hip-hop. Several years ago, the legendary frontman of Public Enemy narrated The Untold Story of Detroit Hip-Hop- a documentary that explores the origin and evolution of the culture.

Dilla for the Youth is the first event of the weekend. On Sunday morning, Dilla’s Delights-the donut shop owned by Dilla’s uncle, Herman Hayes is hosting Beats, Brunch and Burgers. The brunch is a fundraiser to raise money to relocate Dilla’s Delights to a new, larger location that will feature a museum and gift shop.

Dilla’s Delights recently surpassed a fundraising goal to raise $15,000 to help with the relocation. The national campaign gained donations from international artists and fans.

Finally on Sunday night is Dillatroit 5. The fifth annual concert features performances by Detroit emcees. There will also be a raffle of Dilla inspired artwork by local painters.

For Barry Yett, better known as DJ Butter, presenting Dillatroit is an annual mission. The event is a passion project which is both celebrated and criticized in Detroit. Detractors often chime in on social media nearly every February with commentary on the event. However, all proceeds raised are contributed to the James DeWitt Yancey Foundation, which is run by Ma Dukes.

Dillatroit 5 includes performances by Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Clear Soul Forces and more. The concert is Sunday, February 9th at Marble Bar in Detroit.

Tickets for Dillatroit 5 are available online and at the box office.
