Travis Scott, Drake & More Face $2 Billion Lawsuit For Astroworld Tragedy

The lawsuits against Travis Scott keep piling up in wake of the Astroworld Festival tragedy.

Attorney Thomas J. Henry sued Travis Scott, Drake and multiple companies for $2 billion on behalf of 282 victims. Henry noted an additional 120 victims reached out to his law firm to pursue legal action over the deadly event.

“The defendants stood to make an exorbitant amount of money off of this event, and they still chose to cut corners, cut costs and put attendees at risk,” Henry said in a press release. “My clients want to ensure the defendants are held responsible for their actions, and they want to send the message to all performers, event organizers and promoters that what happened at Astroworld cannot happen again.”

Apple Music, Live Nation and NRG Stadium were also named as defendants. Apple livestreamed the Astroworld Festival, which was promoted by Live Nation and held at NRG Stadium.

Travis Scott and others were already facing a $750 million lawsuit filed by attorney Tony Buzbee, who’s representing 125 clients of his own. Buzbee’s clients include the family of Axel Acosta, who died at the event.

10 people died and hundreds more were injured in a crowd surge at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival. The youngest victim was a nine-year-old boy named Ezra Blount, who passed away after being in a medically induced coma for more than a week.

Young Dolph Killed By Two Suspects Driving A Mercedes-Benz

The men who killed Young Dolph may be caught sooner than people think. Thanks to operational surveillance cameras around the area, authorities are looking to identify the gunmen.

According to Fox 13, the local news affiliate, stills show the two men who shot the rap star after he purchased some snacks from Makeda’s Butter Cookies.

Young Dolph Suspects

While the officers have not fully identified the murderers, the shop owner, Maurice Hill, shared that his employees were eyewitnesses.

Dolph, whose real name is Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was no stranger to Makeda’s. Just a week prior, the rapper promoted the bakery on his social media.

The photos released by police shows one of the suspects had a firearm that resembled a semi-automatic rifle. The other person had a handgun in his possession and aimed it toward the shop.

Videos and images from the crime scene showed a window shattered from the impact of bullets.

Footage also showed Young Dolph’s camouflage customized Corvette was parked in the parking lot for hours after his tragic demise.

No one other than the “Drip Like Dis” rapper was injured or killed.

Law enforcement released a statement saying, “Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and all who were affected by this horrific act of violence.”

The community is mourning his life. A makeshift memorial complete with stuffed animals, flowers, candles, and balloons remains outside the cookie shop.

The police are still working to identify, charge and arrest the men that killed him.

50 Cent Producing ‘BMF’ Documentary Series For Starz

Starz has greenlighted another show produced by 50 Cent.

According to Deadline, the G-Unit boss is producing a documentary series about the Black Mafia Family for Starz. The docuseries serves as a companion piece to 50 Cent’s scripted drama BMF, which premiered on the network in September.

“The docuseries will offer an inside look at different perspectives from all of those involved, BMF…. Blowing Money Fast,” 50 Cent said.

50 Cent’s documentary series will explore Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory’s organization over the course of eight episodes. G-Unit Film and Television is producing the show alongside Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions.

“The success of BMF demonstrates a continued rise in fan demand and interest in the story of the Flenory Brothers,” Starz President and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said. “We’re excited to dive deeper into the world of Black Mafia Family in this new project with Curtis, Shan [Nicholson] and the teams at G-Unit and Jigsaw.”

50 Cent’s docuseries joins an already extensive lineup of shows he’s produced for Starz. He’s built a television empire at the network with hits such as Power, its multiple spin-offs and BMF.

The scripted BMF show concludes its first season on November 21. Starz has already renewed the crime drama for a second season.

Police Arrest Gang Members Over Brazen Shootout Near Rula Z Listening Party

NYPD Gang Squad might be the new incarnation of it’s 1990s Hip-Hop police. But that might be a good thing.

Because of the unit’s attention to details on social media and rap music’s overlap with gang culture, they have been able to identify two suspects in a shoot-out on Tuesday in Manhattan.

According to the New York Daily News, the alleged shooters are assumed to be gang members and in attendance at the “We on Tour Tuesday” concert featuring Queens rapper Rula Z.

As predicted by law enforcement who followed the Twitter fingers and ramblings on social media, the Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation and the Train to Blow gang joined others in reckless gunplay outside W. 38th St. studio (located near Sixth Ave.) around 10:45 pm Tuesday night.

Two of the three participants injured during the melee have been arrested and charged for their hand in the chaos.

The news outlet even reports that their reporters have reviewed video footage of how the shooting started.

Shown are four men putting stuff inside of a parked silver Altima not far from the studio. Then surveillance shows two other men getting out of a dark sedan that was double-parked on the same street.

One of the men from the dark sedan started shooting at the four.

There were about 50 people inside of the concert. However, one witness, who saw one of the men, told the Daily News what she saw, saying, “He was running down the street towards Sixth. He was saying, he was shot. ‘I’m shot, I’m shot!’”

She may have seen one of the suspects from the dark sedan.

According to police, one of the men who has been arrested is a 27-year-old who is seen in the footage as the person who took the first shots (identified by a red hoodie) and a second 24-year-old who was shot in the right side of the chest.

KNOW YA HIP HOP: Kendrick Lamar and DJ Hollywood

On November 18, 2021, the Universal Hip Hop Museum and AllHipHop.com are set to celebrate Hip Hop History Month by highlighting Kendrick Lamar and DJ Hollywood.

A post shared by The Hip Hop Museum (@thhmuseum)

Hip Hop purists consider Kendrick Lamar a remnant of classic lyricism and emceeing. He is a thoughtful rapper that balances hood narratives with beautifully constructed rhyme masterpieces.

Three of his four studio albums have been listed in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020). K-Dot has made history winning the Pulitzer Prize for music, making and becoming the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the prestigious prize. Even with all that, this West Coast emcee pays respect to the legacy artists that have come before him 💯

Fun fact: He was named after legendary R&B singer/songwriter Eddie Kendricks. No wonder he is so amazing.

Myles Truitt Talks Gun Safety On The Set Of 50 Cent’s ‘BMF’ Series

The use of firearms on set became a major topic in Hollywood following the tragic death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed Hutchins while filming the movie.

Violence is part of the storytelling for the Starz network’s BMF series. While appearing on Fox Soul’s The Mix, 19-year-old Myles Truitt spoke about learning to shoot a gun for his BMF role as Brian Mickie aka B-Mickie.

“It was really my first time. It was an experience, for sure. I had fun,” said Myles Truitt. The Mix co-host Romeo Miller then asked Truitt for his thoughts on the Rust tragedy and gun safety practices for BMF.

Truitt responded, “When it comes down to me, I always make sure the person that is in front of that barrel is comfortable and knows what’s in it. When it comes down to the safety department, I make sure he’s hands-on with me and the person. He can look down the barrel with the flashlight before the scene and afterward… I hope everyone goes through the steps and the precautions.”

BMF follows the story of the real-life Black Mafia Family, the criminal organization once headed by Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory. The cast includes Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory, Jr. as his father Big Meech and Da’Vinchi as Southwest T.

BMF features performances by Russell Hornsby, Michole Briana White, Ajiona Alexus, Steve Harris, and Eric Kofi-Abrefa as well. In addition, Snoop Dogg, Kash Doll, La La Anthony, Wood Harris, and Serayah have recurring roles on the program.

Myles Truitt’s character is described as a “street-lifer, philosophizing stoner” with a “propensity for violence.” The cocaine-cooking B-Mickie is a day-one associate of the drug-dealing Flenory brothers.

Previously, Truitt starred as young Ronnie DeVoe in the BET mini-series The New Edition Story. Plus, the Atlanta native acted in other television series such as OWN’s Queen Sugar, CW’s Black Lightning, and FX’s Atlanta.

Viewers can also catch Myles Truitt in upcoming episodes of a popular horror series on Netflix. The teenager told The Mix, “I’m actually part of the new Stranger Things season 4, the season coming out next summer.”

The season one finale of BMF will air on Sunday, November 21. Starz already renewed the Detroit-based crime drama for a second season. Hip Hop mogul Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is credited as an executive producer for BMF.

Drake’s Nothing Was The Same spent its 400th week on the Billboard album rankings. The 2013 studio LP joins Take Care in the 400-week club, making Drake the first act in history to have two studio projects remain on the chart for that amount of time.

Nothing Was the Same debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 658,000 first-week units sold. Take Care also opened in the top spot two years earlier. Drake’s Grammy-winning sophomore set now sits at 454 weeks on the Billboard 200.

U.S. Attorney Releases Statement About R. Kelly Associate Receiving 8-Year Prison Sentence

On November 17, United States District Judge Ann M. Donnelly sentenced Michael Williams to 96 months in federal prison. Williams, an associate of R&B singer R. Kelly, was convicted of attempting to intimidate a witness in Kelly’s own federal trial.

Prosecutors claimed Michael Williams, 38, tried to prevent the woman from cooperating with the government’s investigation in the Kelly case. Williams allegedly set fire to a vehicle at the home of the witness who also happened to be an alleged victim of R. Kelly.

“In a violent act designed to instill fear and stop a witness from testifying at trial, Williams set fire to the victim’s vehicle in the middle of the night while it was parked outside of a residence occupied by four adults and two children,” stated Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. “Intimidating witnesses and threatening the safety of crime victims undermine the very fabric of our judicial system and will never be tolerated.”

U.S. Attorney Peace continued, “This Office will bring all of its resources to bear against those who commit dangerous acts of violence to silence victims and interfere with the administration of justice.”

Back in June 2020, Michael Williams poured gasoline around an SUV parked outside of a Florida residence where the victim-witness in the Kelly case was living at the time.

According to the government, Williams also made internet searches about the detonation properties of fertilizer and diesel fuel, witness intimidation and witness tampering, and countries that do not have extradition agreements with the United States.

R. Kelly (born Robert Kelly) was convicted of racketeering predicated on criminal conduct including sexual exploitation of children, forced labor, and Mann Act violations in September. The 54-year-old Chicago native also faces federal child pornography and obstruction charges in Illinois.

Fellow Wu-Tang Clan member RZA revealed that he is keeping the Brooklyn rapper’s legacy alive with a biopic commemorating his life, career, and impact on Hip-Hop culture.

The ODB Story

RZA gave an interview to “MIC” to discuss the Sasha Jenkins documentary Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mice and Men and the successful Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga. He revealed the OBD biopic, set to be a feature film, is part of a long-term plan he’s determined to see through.

“The documentary was to capture the story as best we can in the reality of it, and then the TV series was to dramatize it,” he said. “The third tier of the plan, which I’m in progress of, is an ODB movie biopic. Like the five-year Wu-Tang plan, this was a five-year media plan that I concocted, I meditated on, and I’m striving to live out. So far, it’s working well.”

Meanwhile, the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder has been keeping himself very busy making moves across industries. As well as a recent Wu-Tang Clan “3 Chambers” tour and collaborations with Cadillac and North Face, a comic is on the way.

RZA recently announced a partnership with Z2 Comics to create a new graphic novel titled “Bobby Digital and the Pit of Snakes.”

Slated for release in May 2022, the comic is based on the character RZA first introduced to the world via his debut solo album “Bobby Digital in Stereo” in 1998.

“Out of all my creative personas and alter egos, Bobby Digital is probably the best fit for comics and graphic novels,” RZA explained. “It’s a pleasure for me to collaborate with Z2 Comics and bring this lush world of creativity into the comic space. The readers are going to be hit with something they never seen coming. Bong – Bong.”

Fake Drake Claims He’s Getting $5000 Appearance Fees, Says Drake Approves

Images of a “Fake Drake” making appearances at events and taking pics with fans have made the rounds on social media.

In recent weeks, internet personality DJ Akademiks and Tory Lanez both posted the Drake impersonator making his popularity soar. Now, the 22-year-old Toronto native has scored a sit-down with Adam 22 of the No Jumper podcast to talk about his doppelganger hustle. “Fake Drake,” who goes by the alias of @IzzyyDrake on Instagram, said he’s getting to the bag and has a single and a tour on the way.

He revealed the tour came about because he’s hired by promoters who can’t afford a Drake appearance.

“People DM me like ‘Hey, you wanna come to my event?” he explained to Adam 22. “Because I can’t pay Drake, he’s too expensive. I’ll pay you $5,000’–$5,000 just to show up. They pay my Airbnb, they pay the flight. They hook it all up.”

Fake Drake Said Drizzy’s Cool With It

According to @IzzyDrake, he heard from a mutual friend that the Canadian superstar is unbothered by “Fake Drake’s” hustle. He claimed the friend told him:

“Drake was just like ‘It doesn’t bother me. It doesn’t affect me, let the guy get his bag. It isn’t affecting me.’… He didn’t really give a f**k,” he added.

Furthermore, the impersonator said he’s just trying to make a living for his family, including his two-year-old twins.

“I’m just being humble; I’m just doing my thing. I got kids–I’m doing this s**t for my family.” Before adding, “I didn’t study to become an artist. I didn’t ask for this life–it’s just like God’s plan, you know?” he quipped.

Additionally, he said he owns a record label and is currently managing a couple of Canadian R&B artists and some punk rockers.

@IzzyDrake took to Instagram to share a snippet of his new single, “Do Not Disturb,” out November 23.

Tidal Introduces Free Tier & Direct To Artist Payouts

Tidal have revamped their payment model and subscription packages to include a free option for the first time ever.

On Wednesday (Nov. 17) Tidal announced the rebrand of their streaming services offering the new free tier. Users can create memberships at no cost and listen to the full Tidal catalog with “limited interruptions.”

Furthermore, an additional two tiers are tailored specifically for users who want higher-fidelity sound quality. HiFi offers improved sound quality, no ads, and offline listening for $9.99 a month. HiFi Plus comes in at $19.99 a month and introduces a groundbreaking new artist payment model. This tier also offers features, including direct-to-artist payments.

“We’re working to create a place that is better for artists and their fans. Because we love music. And the artists who create it. And the fans who crave it,” it was announced via Twitter. “Today we’re sharing progress on some new stuff: TIDAL Free, $10 HiFi, Direct Artist Payouts, and Fan-Centered Royalties.”

The streaming platform explained that HiFi Plus will allow users to put money directly into the pockets of their favorite artists.

“New: Direct Artist Payouts. This program will give artists access to another payment stream by allocating 10% of monthly subscriptions at the HiFi Plus tier to each listener’s most streamed artist. Artists can now benefit directly from their biggest fans on TIDAL.”

Another new addition is fan-centered royalties which are set to come into play in January 2022. Instead of the current aggregated system, “royalties will go to the artists that TIDAL users actually stream, so fans can directly support the artists they love. (What a concept, right?)”

R. Kelly Associate Sentenced To 8 Years In Prison For Torching Victim’s Car

An associate of R. Kelly received a sentence of 8 years in federal prison for attempting to intimidate one of Kelly’s victims by setting fire to her car so she wouldn’t testify against him.

Rolling Stone” reports Michael Williams, 38, was sentenced on Wednesday (Nov. 17) after pleading guilty to arson back in April. Williams set fire to the car of one of the women due to testify against R. Kelly in his racketeering trial.

Despite the attempt to silence her, the victim, referred to in court papers by the pseudonym “Jane Doe,” went on to give evidence against the disgraced singer in August. During her testimony, she described in detail the sexual abuse R. Kelly perpetrated against her when she was 17 years old. Her evidence was key in securing a conviction against R. Kelly.

The investigation found that Williams traveled 200 miles to Jane Doe’s home and set fire to her father’s car before fleeing the scene. A search warrant determined Williams had recently made Google searches linking him to the case. He searched for the victim’s address, information on detonating fertilizer bombs, and news about R. Kelly, “case law for tampering with a witness.”

“In a violent act designed to instill fear and stop a witness from testifying at trial, Williams set fire to the victim’s vehicle in the middle of the night while it was parked outside of a residence occupied by four adults and two children,” United States Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement. “Intimidating witnesses and threatening the safety of crime victims undermine the very fabric of our judicial system and will never be tolerated. This Office will bring all of its resources to bear against those who commit dangerous acts of violence to silence victims and interfere with the administration of justice.”

Jane Doe’s Statement

Additionally, Assistant US Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez read a statement from Jane Doe in the courtroom:

“It is very unfortunate to see a man lose his freedom, however, the crime that was committed was not only vicious but disturbing. My mental state deteriorated tremendously due to fear, invasion of privacy, and trauma among many other things. Because of your actions, I live in fear and have had to relocate my entire life. In that home were not only adults but animals and children under the age of 10. My family is traumatized and has been in distress due to this unlawful act. I hope this life-changing event gives you time to reflect on your actions.”

Former Girlfriend Of R. Kelly Shared Pictures Of Arson Attack

It is widely speculated that “Jane Doe” here is R. Kelly’s ex Azriel Clary. The Chicago native’s former girlfriend revealed she was targeted in an arson attack back in June 2020. She claimed someone set fire to her car and poured gasoline around the outside of her home.

Talib Kweli Calls Kanye West A “Poser” In Response To Backpacker Comments

Talib Kweli has responded once again to Kanye West’s “Drink Champs” interview calling him a “poser.”

The “Get By” rapper took to Instagram sharing a clip of Kanye’s “Backpack Rap” comments and his response.

“Poser (noun) – a person who pretends what he or she is not… an affected or insincere person,” Kweli captioned the post. “Real question- since when did we celebrate posers in hip-hop? I don’t even know whether to laugh or be offended anymore.”

https://www.instagram.com/tv/CWVsFZmAlXD/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Talib reinforced his feelings in another post after an IG user responded to his “Poser” post calling him “SALTY.” The New York native asked the fan, “Why you love posers?”

“Dude came here to tell me to stop criticizing posers and then said he loves my group Gang Starr 🤣🤣🤣”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWWEaufpaMP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Earlier this month, Yeezy caused a stir claiming he was never a fan of Talib Kweli. He also said he was using the image of a “Backpack Rapper” to get ahead.

“I’m sorry to all the backpack community,” Kanye said on “Drink Champs.” “Due to the fact that I was from the streets but I never killed anybody, it was just easier for me to pose like a backpacker, but I actually really love street n##### and don’t really listen to backpack music like that.”

He added, “I apologize, once again, to Kweli. I’m sorry I never f*cked with your raps.”

Last week, Talib Kweli took aim at Kanye via Instagram, shading him with a “Kanye West Ghostwriter Appreciation Post.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWMMMbgBzXA/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The Black Star member shared photographs of artists including John Legend, Pusha-T, Rhymefest, and Lupe Fiasco.

Meanwhile, Kanye seems in a conciliatory mood, so perhaps the pair can get back on good terms again. Yeezy and Drake recently took steps to end their longstanding feud, uniting for a “Free Larry Hoover Concert” on December 9.

New York Senators Introduce Bill To Limit Use Of Rap Lyrics In Criminal Trials

A new bill hopes to restrict the usage of rap lyrics in criminal trials.

New York state senators Brad Hoylman and Jamaal Bailey are introducing the “Rap Music on Trial” bill to bolster free speech protections. The legislation seeks to raise the bar for song lyrics being submitted as evidence by prosecutors.

“Art is creative expression, not a blueprint of criminal plans,” Senator Hoylman said in a press release. “Yet we’ve seen prosecutors in New York and across the country try to use rap music lyrics as evidence in criminal cases, a practice upheld this year by a Maryland court. It’s time to end the egregious bias against certain genres of music, like rap, and protect the First Amendment rights of all artists. I’m proud to introduce this legislation so that New York leads the way in treating artists fairly, no matter their background.”

Rap lyrics have often been admitted as evidence of criminal behavior. But if the bill is passed, New York prosecutors would have to establish “clear and convincing proof” that a song’s lyrics were literal.

“The right to free speech is enshrined in our federal and state constitutions because it is through this right that we can preserve all of our other fundamental rights,” Senator Bailey said. “The admission of art as criminal evidence only serves to erode this fundamental right, and the use of rap and Hip Hop lyrics in particular is emblematic of the systemic racism that permeates our criminal justice system.”

He added, “In many cases, even the mere association with certain genres, like Hip Hop and rap, leads to heightened scrutiny in the courtroom and is used to presume guilt, immorality, and propensity for criminal activity. This bill will finally put an end to this grossly discriminatory practice by ensuring that there is a valid nexus between the speech sought to be admitted into evidence and the crime alleged.”

Senator Hoylman is hopeful the “Rap Music on Trial” bill can quickly make its way through the New York legislature. He’s optimistic the bill could be signed into law by June 2022.

Young Dolph’s Death Lead To Calls For Citywide Curfew In Memphis

Two city leaders want a curfew to be enacted in Memphis following Young Dolph’s death.

Young Dolph was shot and killed at a local bakery on Wednesday. Tennessee State Representative London Lamar and Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley Jr. pushed for a citywide curfew in wake of the tragedy.

“I’m making the suggestion to @CityOfMemphis @MEM_Council to implement a citywide curfew tonight!!” Lamar announced via Twitter.

Smiley issued a statement calling for a curfew and mourned the passing of Young Dolph.

“I’m grieving like every other Memphian right now,” he wrote. “Yet another tragedy, yet another murder due to senseless gun violence. Today, we lost a very talented Memphian and a star known all across this country. To be very honest and transparent, I am growing tired of issuing statements that speak to or highlight crime in our communities.”

He added, “I ask that you exercise care and caution in the days to come. Make smart decisions and be safe. I’m hopeful that the City of Memphis will implement a curfew to preserve the safety of all citizens.”

Lamar and Smiley’s requests came after Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland addressed Young Dolph’s death on social media. He implored his city’s residents to stay calm and let police investigate the murder.

“I ask for calm in our city to allow the Memphis Police Department to do their duty to capture those responsible,” he tweeted. “I’d also like to ask that motorists continue to avoid the area of Airways and I-240.”

The late great MF DOOM was one of the most creative Hip-Hoppers in the entire world. He was a gifted lyricist, a huge graffiti fan, and as a producer was a portal for all creative energies who still wanted to push boundaries in Hip Hop.

An original member of the rap group KMD, performing under the name Zev Love X, he consistently evolved from the late 80s to his death in 2020.

One way he bent the rules was by releasing albums under the pseudonyms King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. Even the mainstream acknowledged this “underground” icon. Variety described him as one of the scene’s “most celebrated, unpredictable and enigmatic figures.”

Fun fact: Though he was put on during New York’s Golden Era of Hip Hop, he was not originally from the Big Apple. Like Slick Rick, Monie Love, and 21 Savage, he was born in Great Britain.

Friday, November 17, 1989, Hip-Hop legends EPMD and Boogie Down Productions featuring KRS-One put on a doubleheader of shows at the world-famous Apollo Theatre in New York.

The Blast Master had recently formed the “Stop the Violence Movement” in hopes of encouraging the community to end the senseless violence being committed.

He gathered some of the East Coast’s biggest names to come together on the song “Self Destruction” which debuted at No. 1 on the first-ever Billboard “Hot Rap Songs” and held the spot for ten weeks.
