Lil Gnar Declares Future Is Better Than 2Pac

Back in 2018, Lil Xan learned the hard way not to disparage the late Tupac Shakur. It appears another “Lil” rapper, known as Lil Gnar, decided to share an unsolicited take about the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer too.

Lil Xan faced widespread backlash, including pushback from Atlanta-bred artists Waka Flocka Flame and T.I., for saying 2Pac made boring music. Those comments essentially halted Xan’s career, and he was never able to completely recover.

Fellow Atlanta representative Caleb “Lil Gnar” Sheppard has now placed himself in the hot seat by comparing the legendary Tupac Shakur to a 2010s-era rap star from the same city. On January 14, Gnar tweeted, “Future better den Tupac easy.”

https://twitter.com/lilgnar/status/1482085845054152704?s=20

Lil Gnar’s Twitter post ignited a firestorm of debates in the replies and quote-tweets. Some people pointed out that 2Pac has sold more albums and is considered more lyrical than Future. Other people suggested the generational divide between Pac and Future is too great to compare.

Future actually has a tribute song titled “2Pac” which lives on the critically-acclaimed Monster mixtape. That Nard & B-produced track includes Future saying, “Got bandana ’round my head like I’m 2Pac.” Future also raps, “Got a bandana ’round my head, screaming, ‘Thug life.'”

As far as Lil Gnar, the skateboarder-turned-rapper is best known for singles such as “Death Note,” “Diamond Choker” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, and “Missles” featuring Trippie Redd. Plus, Lil Gnar dropped GNAR Lif3 and Fire Hazard via 10K Projects.

Cardi B Teases Getting A Face Tattoo Of Newborn Son’s Name

Belcalis “Cardi B” Almánzar and Kiari “Offset” Cephus welcomed their first son together on September 4, 2021. The celebrity couple has yet to disclose the baby’s name, but Cardi B may announce it to the world in an untypical way.

The “Up” hitmaker took to Twitter to tell her followers about possible new body ink coming in the future. Cardi B is supposedly considering adding a new tat in celebration of her newborn.

“Random but… I’m 1% close [to] tatting my [son’s] name on my face… I really really wanna do it!” tweeted Cardi B on January 17. That tweet has collected more than 2,000 retweets and 39,000 likes.

One of Cardi B’s fans shared her interest in getting a face tattoo by potentially adding words behind their ear. The 29-year-old Grammy winner responded, “I want mine on my jaw.”

Cardi B and Offset are also parents to three-year-old Kulture Kiari Cephus. Set already has Kulture’s name tattooed on his jaw. The Migos member inked his other three children’s names on his body as well.

The public first officially learned about Cardi B’s second pregnancy in June during the 2021 BET Awards. She revealed her baby bump while performing “Type S###” with Offset, Takeoff, and Quavo of the Migos.

Eazy-E’s Daughter Addresses Kanye West’s “Eazy” Diss Line Directed At Pete Davidson

Kanye “Ye” West is back in the news once again. The Donda album creator took aim at Pete Davidson, the rumored boyfriend of West’s estranged wife Kim Kardashian.

“God saved me from that crash, just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s ass,” raps Ye on a new song titled “Eazy.” West Coast Hip Hop veteran The Game also appears on the track.

TMZ caught up with Ebie Wright, the daughter of the late N.W.A. emcee Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, to get her thoughts on Ye and Game’s “Eazy.” Ebie expressed approval of the collaboration.

“I think it’s a great song. I’m a huge Kanye fan. I love Game. It’s an incredible record, and it was also produced by my buddy Hit-Boy. So shout out to all my guys,” said Ebie Wright.

When asked how she feels about her father’s legacy tacitly being attached to real-life personal drama, Ebie Wright stated, “The fact they sampled ‘Eazy-Duz-It’ – my father literally represents revolutionizing everything. He also represents gangsta rap.”

She continued, “What Kanye did and what he said on [‘Eazy’] doesn’t get no more gangsta than that. I’m with it. You gotta think about it. Kanye knows how to go viral. He’s also very expressive. He can’t do no wrong.”

Kanye West and The Game’s “Eazy” debuted at #2 on Spotify’s United States Top 100 daily chart with 1,071,485 streams. The single racked up 2,051,643 first-day streams on Spotify’s Global Top 100 daily chart.

Eazy-E’s “Eazy-Duz-It” is the title track for 1988’s Eazy-Duz-It album. Prior to his passing in 1995, the Ruthless Records founder released other solo efforts such as It’s On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa in 1993 and Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton in 1996.

The Weeknd Fans Slam Gunna For Blocking ‘Dawn FM’ From Debuting At No. 1

Gunna’s DS4Ever is the most popular album in America. The Atlanta-bred rapper’s third studio LP was able to surpass The Weeknd’s Dawn FM in first-week sales.

DS4Ever opened at #1on the latest Billboard 200 album chart with 150,300 units. In contrast, Dawn FM started out with 148,000 equivalent album units.

Even though DS4Ever is Gunna’s second consecutive #1 project, some fans of The Weeknd were shocked the YSL Records representative took the top spot. Numerous upset stans expressed frustration and confusion about the outcome.

“He bought this number 1 lol,” tweeted @abelsthegoat. The @aIIyweeknd account wrote, “[Gunna] bought it. [I guess] he really needed that.” @lmaodreww posted, “Literally only staying at #1 for one week then flopping… Abel will be on top 🤣.”

There were unfounded accusations that Gunna used payola, the illegal practice of paying for songs to get airplay on commercial radio stations. Gunna appears to be unfazed by the backlash over the first-week success of DS4Ever.

Overnight, the “Pushin P” performer thanked his supporters. Gunna used his Instagram page to express gratitude to anyone that helped DS4Ever reach #1.

“We #1 in the Fuccin WORLD Craig 🤯#DS4EVER Thanks To MY Fans My Gang & My GOD 🙏🏽 I Love u @ebsdaboss 💙🅿️,” posted Gunna on IG. He also uploaded a video of himself declaring this chart-topper is “the big one.”

Previously, Gunna scored a #1 album with 2020’s Wunna. The Weeknd has four career Number Ones on the Billboard 200 – 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s Starboy, 2020’s After Hours, and 2021’s The Highlights.

Kanye West Addresses Altercation With Fan: “That Blue Covid Mask Ain’t Stop That Knockout

Kanye West has given an interview addressing the incident in which he allegedly punched an autograph seeker and the circumstances that led up to it.

Ye is currently being investigated by the LAPD for punching 40-year-old Justin Poplawski in Los Angeles last week. Kanye spoke exclusively to Hollywood Unlocked’s Jason Lee and revealed he was “irate” with his cousin who was acting as a go-between in his communications with Kim Kardashian.

“It was 3 a.m. in front of [Soho] Warehouse,” Kanye explained to Lee. “I’m saying, ‘You don’t know what I’m dealing with right now.’ I just finished these two songs; I came from the studio … And this dude, he just had this real attitude, like, ‘Whatchu gonna do?’”

https://twitter.com/HipHopEsp_/status/1481781241108180995?s=20

Elsewhere in the interview, he added, “I’ma just tell you, that blue COVID mask ain’t stop that knockout.”

Kanye West Speaks On His Issues With Kim Kardashian

Kanye West also revealed some of his issues with Kim Kardashian concerning his children. “Security aint gone be in between me and my children,” he said. “And my children aint gone be on TikTok without my permission.”

Kim’s new boyfriend Pete Davidson was also mentioned, “I’m hearing that the new boyfriend is in the house that I can’t even go to,” said Yeezy. The Chicago native name-checked the comedian in his new song with The Game. “God saved me from that crash, just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s ass,” he raps on “Eazy.”

The interview came just days before Kanye claimed he was shut out of daughter Chicago’s birthday party. He later revealed he attended the party after Travis Scott gave him the address. Ye also threw a separate party for his little girl.

According to Jason Lee, Kanye West will be going to court over his children, “He’s going to fight them with everything legally and he’s going to do it very calmly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Unlocked says Kanye could face a maximum of six months in jail if convicted of battery.

NLE Choppa Reacts To Getting Into A Fight With NBA YoungBoy Fan

Footage of a fight between NLE Choppa and another man is circulating on the internet. While specific details about the altercation are not clear at the moment, social media users are very interested in the matter.

Celebrity blogger Akademiks posted a video of the physical encounter at an airport. Apparently, NLE Choppa’s foe is a diehard fan of YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s 4KT crew.

The unidentified man is seen throwing hands with the Memphis-bred rapper. NLE Choppa reacted on Twitter to all of the attention surrounding the clash.

“It’s a difference from getting hit and falling then fighting in flip flops and falling on [your] own,” tweeted the “Shotta Flow” rhymer.

He continued, “I fell throwing a punch [I didn’t] get hit [until] I was [on the way] down 😂 and my backpack 20 pounds. [Buddy’s] lip [is] swole. everything I [threw] connected.”

NLE Choppa also claimed he rolled his ankle and had to put ice on the joint. The Top Shotta album creator added, “That first swing [is] what left him KNOTTED, damn that b#### was [deadly].”

Last year, NLE Choppa was also involved in what appeared to be a five-on-one brawl in Venice Beach, California. The recent airport fight comes on the heels of NLE Choppa releasing his “Too Hot” collaboration with Moneybagg Yo.

Gunna Reacts As “DS4Ever” Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200 Chart

Gunna has edged out the Weeknd to take the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart this week.

The projections proved correct, predicting the pair in a close fight for the number one spot. According to Billboard, DS4Ever debuted at number one with 150,300 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. The Canadian singer-songwriter earned second place with 148,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 13.

According to MRC Data, Gunna’s 150K came almost entirely from streaming activity (144,600 streaming equivalent albums) and marked his best-ever week in terms of units earned. He registered 4,700 album sales and 1,000 track equivalent album units.

This marks Gunna’s second chart-topping effort following Wunna and his fourth top 10 effort overall.

The Atlanta native first topped the Billboard chart in May 2020 with his second studio album, Wunna. Three projects from Gunna’s Drip Season mixtape series have also made the top ten in previous years.

Both Gunna and The Weeknd issued deluxe versions of their albums within days of the original release. They also both added additional tracks and Gunna’s Drake feature of “P Power” helped to increase sales.

Gunna celebrated the win in a video posted on Instagram, giving thanks to his supporters.

“We #1 in the Fuccin WORLD Craig 🤯#DS4EVER” he wrote in the caption. “Thanks To MY Fans My Gang & My GOD 🙏🏽 I Love u @ebsdaboss 💙🅿️”

Geechi Gotti Named Best Battle Rapper in 2021: Wins “Champion Of The Year” Award

2021 was the most prolific year in battle rap, with more events thrown than any other time in history. With that many battles and battlers putting on, deciding who would be Champion of the Year was always going to be a tough decision.

The panel selected by Champion’s Jay Blac took nearly eight hours of intense debate to agree on the 20 battlers who rose above all the competition in 2021. Tempers flared as the top twenty names selected by the Champion viewership were either placed on the list or failed to make the final cut.

Each battler was judged based on set criteria – strength of schedule, impact, moments, material, consistency, and performance. In the end, there could only be one winner, and the panel decided Compton’s Geechi Gotti was the best battle rapper of 2021, making him a three-time Champion of the Year winner!

1. Geechi Gotti 2021 Champion of the Year

Geechi Gotti had a phenomenal 2021, battling consistently throughout the year, showing out on a number of leagues, and scoring some epic wins along the way. He sailed through URL’s Ultimate Madness 3 tournament, eventually splitting Drake’s $150,000 prize money with fellow EFB member Rum Nitty, though he narrowly won the judge’s decision. The pair put on a final that was easily one of the best battles of the year. Gotti also got a win over one of battle rap’s end game bosses – the legend Loaded Lux on the biggest card of the year, shifting the culture along the way.

2. Eazy The Block Captain

Eazy The Block Captain took the second spot with only four one-on-one battles, highlighting the impact of those performances and his overall 2021. The race for the top spot was a tough decision. The panel decided Gotti and Eazy won three of the six categories each but ultimately selected Geechi as the overall winner. Eazy’s 2021 was highly impressive. He had a classic with Chess, one of the very best battles of the year, and took clear wins from the likes of T-Rex and K. Shine. Eazy is also one of the few battlers to debut on URL marquee events, NOME and Summer Madness in the same year. He is ranked 9-0 on the URL app and has received the highest reactions on the app for his last five battles.

Mike Tyson Set To Fight Jake Paul In Boxing Match!

False GIFs | Tenor

UPDATE: THIS IS FALSE!

Mike Tyson said, “This is new to me. I just saw Jake in St. Barths and he never mentioned it.

Sorry guy. The old info is below.

—-

Mike Tyson and Jake Paul are set to fight in a prizefight that should net them millions.

Apparently, Jake Paul has heard the criticism that he has not for any real boxers in his short, brief fighting career. Now, he is set to fight one of the greatest fighters of all time. IRON MIKE!

The Cleveland native will go against Mike Tyson!! No, that is crazy. As you already know, Jake Paul managed to beat up and knock out Tyron Woodly in an impressive fashion. He knocked Tyron out so bad, that people thought it was fixed!

Jake Paul Knock Out GIF - Jake Paul Knock Out Tyron Woodley - Discover & Share GIFs

In his defense, Jake Paul was set to fight Tommy Fury, the brother of Tyson Fury last year. However, because of a medical condition, the younger Fury was unable to fight. Not Jake’s fault.

Is Jake ready to fight Mike Tyson? I doubt it. However, we all know this is about money and this fight will certainly make money! So, being ready only means that he will be ready! Jake has come a long way. Mike Tyson is 55-years old and he’s about to come back around in second life if he beats this young hyena.

Just a month ago, we thought that Mike Tyson was going to fight Jake’s brother Logan but that is clearly not about to happen. By the way, they are cool. So…there’s that. We interviewed Jake and he made a couple things clear 1) his brother could not beat Floyd Mayweather and 2) that he was friends with Mike.

What do you guys think of that?

Honestly, I don’t want to see Mike lose to Jake…he’s almost 30 years younger than the Iron One! Say no! The money ain’t worth it.

NLE Choppa Gets In Scuffle At Airport! Allegedly!

NLE Choppa is one of the most interesting characters in a long time, but that also attracts another element. Clout chasers! So, it seems like NLE Choppa was in a random airport somewhere and was minding his own business. Suddenly some dude steps up to him.

He repeatedly asks him who he was! He knows who he is! I guess he did not want to accidentally assault the wrong person on camera. Once he realized what was happening, it seems like he attacked NLE Choppa. There was a huge scuffle and then he hops on camera taking credit for an illegl assault!

Look at it!

NLE Choppa and NBA YoungBoy used to have a business relationship that did not workout, apparently. Now, they don’t talk. Wow. And on top of that, he does not like being compared to him. I guess this rando decided to put hands on him for the clout!

Kanye West Had Separate Party For Chicago After Birthday Controversy With Kim

Kanye West thanks Travis Scott for helping him get to his daughter Chicago’s party

Kanye West has thanked Travis Scott for inviting him to his daughter Chicago’s birthday party over the weekend after alleging he was initially shut out.

The 44-year-old rapper took to Instagram to hit out at estranged wife Kim Kardashian, who he claimed did not invite him to the four-year-old’s joint party with Scott and Kylie.

Jenner’s daughter Stormi on Saturday.
“I’m just wishin’ my daughter a public happy birthday. I wasn’t allowed to know where her party was. There’s nothin’ legal that’s sayin’ that this is the kinda games that is bein’ played,” the Donda hitmaker commented during an Instagram Live.

He continued, “It’s the kinda thing that really has affected my health for the longest, and I’m just not playin’… I’m takin’ control of my narrative this year. I’m bein’ the father, the best father, the Ye version of a father, and I’m not finna let this happen.”

The Grammy Award winner insisted he was worried that his absence would “imprint” on his daughter in a negative way.

He also criticized his estranged wife, as well as Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian, for allegedly refusing to tell him where the party was being held.

Later, West returned to the social media site to credit Scott with allowing him to attend.

“I just got to shout out to Travis Scott for sending me the address and the time and making sure that I was able to spend that birthday memory with my daughter to be there with the rest of the family,” he stated.

Editors at TMZ reported that the incident was a “simple case of mixed signals,” with a source alleging Kardashian was under the impression that the two were throwing separate parties for the pre-schooler.

Kanye West eventually threw a separate bash for his daughter after spending two hours at the event.

Ice Cube has been booked for a NASCAR event.

The legendary rapper will perform during a race break at NASCAR’s Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum. The race is scheduled to take place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on February 6.

“I’ve long been a fan of NASCAR from afar, and I’ve become an even bigger fan after seeing the action in person,” Ice Cube said in a press release. “And now to perform for all of the fans at the Coliseum and for the millions watching at home, I’m excited to be part of an incredible day for NASCAR and L.A.”

NASCAR’s senior vice president for strategy and innovation Ben Kennedy added, “Ice Cube is more than a rapper, actor and entertainer. He’s an icon who has risen to the top in all of his endeavors. We’re honored to have him perform at this first-of-its-kind event in the heart of Los Angeles.”

Kanye West & The Game’s “Eazy” Cover Art Faces Criticism From PETA

PETA has an issue with the cover art for Kanye West and The Game’s new single “Eazy.”

The animal rights organization’s president Ingrid Newkirk condemned the photo in a statement to Billboard. Kanye West and The Game shared the cover art on their Instagram accounts before the song was released on Friday (January 14).

“The photo is reminiscent of the monkeys PETA has found, sometimes heads, sometimes hands, sometimes the whole body, in meat markets around the world,” Newkirk told Billboard. “And it makes it clear that when you remove the fur you can’t miss that there’s a person in there, that they are fellow primates, and do not belong to us to abuse for any purpose — not in laboratories, roadside zoos, movies, or meat markets.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CYsgJHwLt4A/

PETA also called out Kanye West on social media.

“The disturbing image of a skinned monkey that @kanyewest shared serves as a reminder that there’s no real difference between humans and other animals,” PETA wrote on Instagram. “Their lives aren’t easy when we abuse and kill them for food, experiments, clothing, or entertainment — they’re not ours to abuse for any reason. #EndSpeciesism.”

Kanye West and The Game’s “Eazy” collaboration featured ‘Ye taking a shot at his estranged wife’s boyfriend Pete Davidson. Yeezy rapped about beating up the comedian on the track’s second verse.

Amber Rose Retracts 2015 Tweet About Kanye And The “Kartrashians”

Amber Rose has backtracked on a controversial tweet she wrote about the Kardashians in 2015.

The comment resurfaced amid ongoing issues between Kim Kardashian and her estranged husband Kanye West, whom the 38-year-old model dated from 2008 to 2010.

In the tweet, Rose tagged the 44-year-old rapper after he went on The Breakfast Club to say that he needed to take “30 showers” after dating her.

She told the Donda hitmaker that the “Kartrashians” would “humiliate” him when “they’re done with (you)”.
After the diss began to circulate again, Amber Rose took to her Instagram Stories to disavow the tweet, calling it “immature.”

“Man F### that old ass tweet,” she began. “I never got an apology for his ’30 Showers’ comment but f### it. I started my Slutwalk and helped Millions of women around the world stand up for themselves against S### shaming so something amazing came out of it.”

She continued, “Kim nor her sisters deserved that tweet and y’all shouldn’t co-sign that either. S### was old and immature af (as f###) of me to involve the KarDASHians in this whole mess HE made.”

Rose encouraged her followers to “learn from” her mistakes and remember that “we all have kids and family’s life is hard enough right now for a lot of (people).”

“I just want to spread love and positivity,” she concluded.

In April 2021, Kardashian and West cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of divorce and agreed to joint custody of their four children.

The “RAW” rapper apologized on social media for pushing an American Sign Language interpreter back from the stage at a recent performer. He didn’t realize that the person was aiding his deaf fans by translating his rapid speed rhyme flow with their fingers during his  Friday, Jan.14 show.

He took to Instagram to express how regretful he was about the misunderstanding.

“So I know a lot of people out there saw this,” he captioned as he showed a video of his pushing Billy Sanders aka #ASLBae back during his performance that went viral.

“But see what y’all didn’t see was this,” he shared next, showing the two shaking hands and him saying “they didn’t tell me what was going on” and saying to the crowd, “understand and understood, I want everybody to enjoy it, you feel me?”

The 53-year-old Juice Crew member then explained, “I’ve done a lot of crazy stuff in my life. But I would never try to disrespect an interpreter that’s doing sign language for the deaf community onstage. No one told me what was going on. No one told my manager that there was going to be an interpreter. We were clueless, so when I came on stage and saw someone just mouthing the lyrics, I was trying to get them off the stage.”

“But no one showed the clip of me apologizing to the brother and allowing him to stay on stage and finish the show,” he continued. “No one showed the clip of me apologizing to the crowd. Because as I said in the clip, I want everyone to enjoy the show, and that means even those who can’t hear it.”

“Anyway though, much respect to the deaf community. I would never disrespect y’all, and once again, much love to that interpreter,” the pioneering rapper said. “Again, I apologize, my brother.”

Kane is a real one.

What Would Martin Luther King Jr. Think About Us Now In The Age Of Hip-Hop?

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. endures as the most recognizable and ubiquitous ideal of peace, love, and symbol for the relentless pursuit of equality. Since his violent, vile, and evil assassination, the course of the world was irrevocably changed.

At first gaze, it seemed like King’s demise put a global spotlight on the most nefarious, and clandestine murderous activities of government and purity of the hatred many had for the Civil Rights icon. In the subsequent years, Black Americans saw strides forward like never before and it felt like a rocket-like trajectory upward.

The “middle class” exploded, opportunities presented themselves and programs like affirmative action benefitted people of all walks regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, and even age. Dr. King, and others like him, were sacrificial lambs that willingly gave their lives – in blood – for the collective. For the future. For us. He knew how the story would end for himself, but that did not deter him, since he likely knew the result would be a better world for all.

In the year 2022, 54 years since his death, we recollect MLK’s legacy once again with thought pieces, TV/internet telecasts and social media posts. There are even streaming media services creating Dr. King playlists to honor his work and legacy.

It is difficult to fathom what the great leader would think of the plight of Black people, Brown people, and the downtrodden in the present day. The first thought is that he would be disappointed in us as a nation in general, and specifically as Black people. After all, he wrote a book in 1967 that asked the ultimate question: “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?”

We are in the midst of one of the most confusing, unregulated, and tumultuous periods in recorded history. The plight is amplified by modern media, social platforms, and old-fashioned word of mouth. It is overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time. Overwhelming because, unlike King in the late 1960s, hope seems to be fleeting. Underwhelming because people seem to lack the same passion for change, embracing instant gratification instead. Personally, I thought Black people would have overcome by now.

King is hopeful in “Where Do We Go From Here.”

Yet, here are some stats that would upset Dr. King.

  • The overall poverty rate as of 2020 was up 11.4 percent, one 1.0 percentage point from 10.5 percent in 2019. Before 2020, it was on the decline. For perspective, that single percent means 3.3 million more people were classified as impoverish than the previous year.
  • There are more nuance stats according to the CDC. For example, the poverty rate for a female-led household increased from 22.2 percent to 23.4 percent.
  • The American median household income was $67,521 in 2020, a decrease, but the median income for African Americans remained the same, according to the report.
  • Income for full-time, year-round workers went up 6.9 percent from 2019 numbers, $61,417 for me and $50,982 for women respectively.

In King’s day, our parents, grands and great grands day, they insisted on better jobs, higher wages, equality in education, fairness in housing and the sweeping, and an unencumbered right to vote made official through the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And King effectively saw a massive gain with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Anyway, stats and numbers don’t tell the whole story. How we feel matters as well. Here’s what some of my friends and associates said in a Facebook post when I queried them.

“I think he’d be angry and ashamed of the bastardization of his life’s work. The reduction of his words to respectability used only to pacify the urgent protests of our time.” Ronnette Cox

“Please include that we dance a lot on social media platforms, Chuck Creekmur.”

“He’d muse on the passing of his brother Sidney Poitier and ruminate how thin-skinned and shallow the artist today are. He’d probably say, ‘Although I don’t listen to rap music as a practice, I’m reminded of Judge Elam’s son Keith and Gang Starr Who’s Gonna Take The Weight?'”

“We’d be somewhere else today were he still with us. His activism evolved to take a stand against the Vietnam war, poverty, and colonialism. His leadership would have inspired so many others who look to his evolution as a model for social justice and humanitarian work.”

“I think he would be embarrassed and offended by most of the music. His teachers were. C Delores Tucker tried to tell us.

“He would regret that his true legacy, that of the Poor People’s Campaign, which was to create an economic Bill of Rights and join together various communities (Black, Native, Hispanic, and most interestingly, poor whites), not only didn’t happen, but that it was the thing that got him killed.”

“He’d be disappointed that we have allowed our music to be weaponized against us without any checks or balances.”

I cannot help, but think that we have allowed the torch once carried by King to die out, and yet, there are numerous flickers of hope around us. Remember King said: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

As far as Hip-Hop is concerned, we see King’s dream alive and well. T.I., for example, has established US OR ELSE, “a social justice-focused non-profit charity organization that advocates for the liberation of Black people and all other oppressed people.” Jay-Z founded REFORM, which fights for “the justice and dignity of people who are needlessly trapped in the criminal justice system.” There’s the Justice League NYC, backed by Carmen Perez and the legendary Harry Belafonte. There are many others too working, like Immortal Technique, Jasiri X, and more.

Numerous artists in both the mainstream and the underground have grown before our eyes in real-time. Think about Lil Baby when we first saw him, quite possibly on drugs, to where we saw him last, on stage with Kirk Franklin. He has evolved into a leader. OGs Killer Mike, Master P, and Vinnie Brown from Naughty By Nature have movements in banking to level the playing field in lending and access to capital.

In education, where we must reaffirm and reclaim our power, Dame Dash and Principal Akbar Cook have come together to inspire and empower our young people all over the nation. Brother Akbar has a bank, a salon, a laundry mat, a recording studio, an urban farm, and more in his New Jersey high school.

We even have the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA) and the NFAC. So, nowadays just about everything is different and revolution has different textures, hues, and complexities.

We strive but are we perfect? No. Was Dr. King perfect? No. We now know that a suit, tie, education, and good manners do not ensure that we’ll be respected. Or safe. So, respectability politics be damned. Whether we realize it or not, even his critics and haters benefitted from his undying legacy of transformation.

Also, it would be irresponsible not to mention the enemy. We face an enemy that has morphed as much as we have since the 1960s – if not more. And, their mission remains as diametrically opposed to us as it was when that bullet robbed us of Dr. King. Moreover, it is imperative that we prepare for the enemy in a way that ensures victory. For that to happen, we’ll have to study the total works of Dr. King and others, not just one-liners like “I have a dream.” We will need to employ new thinking and resources that align with the ultimate goal: Freedom.

The culture NOW still needs to speak up for what we deserve and what we are owed like the griots of old. We cannot wait. We must BE the change that we desire and embody our destiny. King would not co-sign the violence, drug dealing, gratuitous sex like he would not approve of the wealth gap. But he would also know the bigger picture by now. And so should we.

In short, King would say to our generation, “Do not give up, but continue to fight.” He would not be silent and he would not be passive and neither should we. His family has told us “no celebration without legislation.

So, what am I doing?

I have taken the helm of Raising Kings, a Delaware-based program that I have been a part of for 10 years. Under Chandra Pitts, RK has consistently been active in the state and the surrounding areas as have other programs like Girls Can Do Anything! and Around the World in a Summer.

Raising Kings is a collaborative commitment to change the image and expectations of African American males by elevating the level of positive male engagement in the lives of boys. It seeks to build capacity among Men and Boys of Color by leveraging the community’s existing assets, resources and connections.

Raising Kings creates a platform to redefine success and teach healthy manhood through exposure and education. With a strength-based approach, this initiative interrupts the generational crisis of failure to create a counter-culture of fortitude, greatness, cultural awareness and self respect.

Going forward, we are re-committed to raising the next generation of leaders with ancestral guides like Martin, Malcolm, Rosa, Harriet, Medgar, Coretta and so many more employing progressive tactics. And we’ll do it without shame or fear.

Have Grace.

Have Patience.

Embrace The Chaos.

Keep Fighting.

Let’s Go.
