Meek Mill Flips Out On Atlantic, Claims Label Stole Roddy Ricch From Him

Meek Mill aired out Atlantic Records in a series of Twitter posts on Tuesday (February 1).

The multi-platinum selling rapper accused Atlantic Records of stealing Roddy Ricch from him, among other grievances.

“So look I made Atlantic records 100’s of millions and let them rape me out out Roddy a artist they came to me about in jail,” Meek Mill wrote. “they still saying I can’t drop music until 9 months after my last album got blackballed just wrapped buildings and Nina art with talent.”

He explained, “Roddy my youngin still …. But that label seperated us instantly when the millions came in from him… same thing they tried to do with me and rozay … it takes a long time to catch up too because most of em tied in for the love of some money …artist scared to speak up.”

Meek Mill said he was speaking out because he had the leverage to do so.

“They didn’t put nothing into expensive pain and then said I can’t drop another project for 9 months at the end of my contract after I made them 100’s of millions,” he wrote. “how would can anybody survive that … most rappers can’t speak because they depend on these companies ‘I don’t.’”

He added, “If I didn’t have millions I’d prolly do something crazy …. They out smarting young black kids taking advantage and calling it business! Other artist speak up and tell the truth while you winning not when you down!”

Meek Mill noted there’s no issue between him and Roddy Ricch, but he remained upset about how Atlantic allegedly tried to separate them. He claimed he deserved money for his role in the West Coast rapper’s career.

“I had to think Roddy didn’t come to me he was on his own grind … they [brought] him to me and cut me out soon as the money came,” he wrote. “the label should of paid me not ‘Roddy’ then they fed him like I was tryna lock him in … I was tryna help and eat ain’t get a Dolla from label!”

He continued, “Me and Roddy good now this not about him at all … they would of let us go to war and made the money still … I had to say im rich that’s my youngin and turn to these people and ask wassup for my work they asked me to do! I ain’t get a dollar.”

NBA YoungBoy Says Atlantic Records Is Blackballing Him

NBA YoungBoy accused his label Atlantic Records of mishandling his recently released Colors mixtape.

The Baton Rouge native suggested Atlantic Records is blackballing him in a comment posted on his YouTube channel. NBA YoungBoy advised other artists to not sign with the label.

“Why black ball me I’m the good guy !!!??” he wrote. “I was going #1 two weeks straight with a mixtape so they took it down off the charts. I don’t give a f### you still can’t stop me don’t sign to Atlantic if you a artist they not gone support you especially if you live a certain way.”

In response to the allegations, an NBA YoungBoy fan created a Change.org petition calling for Atlantic Records to give him the rights to his masters. The petition referred to his contract as a “slave deal.”

NBA YoungBoy’s post wasn’t the first time he’s complained about his deal with Atlantic Records. Last December, he expressed his desire to leave the label during a Clubhouse conversation with DJ Akademiks.

“The plan is to become a free agent and stop being a slave to Atlantic,” he told Akademiks.

NBA YoungBoy dropped his Colors mixtape on January 21. The project was his eighth release to crack the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart.

Gucci Mane’s Artist Hotboy Wes Arrested By U.S. Marshals

Rapper Hotboy Wes has been arrested in his hometown of Waco, TX. The 26-year-old was wanted for robbery and the Hewitt Police Department issued a warrant for his arrest.

According to KWTX, the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force scooped Gucci Mane’s artist, whose real name is Wesley Takquan Lewis, on Monday, Jan. 31, and seen taking him into custody has locked him up in the McLennan County Jail.

The U.S. Marshals took to Twitter to announce his capture.

“The U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested Wesley Takquan Lewis, also known as “Hotboy Wes,” on a robbery warrant and additional charges including unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and theft of a firearm.”

Jail records report that the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office hit him with two additional charges: unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and theft of a firearm.

The sheriff’s office reports that he was sitting in his car at the 9th and Colcord intersection. Law enforcement recognized him and immediately went in to apprehend the suspect. When they detained him, they found a stolen gun in his vehicle —along with three suspected gang members.

This is not the first time the young man has been in trouble with the law. Two years ago, in February of 2020, he was accused of running his baby mother off the road with his young children.

The story is developing.

Nick Cannon Admits He Failed Therapist’s Celibacy Challenge

Nick Cannon failed his therapist’s challenge for him to remain celibate for 2021.

Last September, the T.V. presenter shared that his therapist had advised him to abstain from sex and “take a break” from having children shortly after he welcomed twins Zion and Zillion with Abby De La Rosa and son Zen with Alyssa Scott in June.

Sadly, Zen passed away following a battle with cancer in December.

However, after confirming he was expecting his eighth child with model Bre Tiesi during the opener of “The Nick Cannon Show” on Monday, Cannon was queried about his celibacy vow by Angela Yee during the Rumor Report segment, and accordingly, he admitted that he is no longer celibate.

“I was like, ‘I’ve got to get my life under control.’ Because I felt I was out of control. And honestly, I do think celibacy did help me through the journey,” he recalled of one of his therapy sessions before adding jokingly: “I’m not celibate no more. I made it… close to New Year.”

Cannon went on to note that he had the celibacy conversation with his therapist shortly after he discovered Bre was pregnant.

“One of the reasons I couldn’t say it, or didn’t choose to say it then, my therapist was one of the ones who said I should probably be celibate. And the reason why was because I had shared that news about Bre being pregnant. I was like, ‘I don’t know what to do!'” the 41-year-old sighed. “That was the reason I started my celibacy journey back then. So, for anyone thinking, ‘Oh, he wasn’t celibate’ – I was! Because I was dealing with that.”

The “Masked Singer” presenter is father to 10-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with his ex-wife Mariah Carey and also shares two children – Golden and Powerful Queen – with Brittany Bell.

Meet Master Yeti: The Producer, Artist, Visual Designer Out Of Chicago

If there’s one thing Master Yeti learned from growing up in Chicago, it’s how to hustle. Coming from a musical family, with his father an esteemed pianist and Minister of Music, and his late uncle a left-handed bass player, the rising star is a music lover if there ever was one — dedicating his entire life to perfecting his craft. Now, he’s ready to take things to the next level.

In describing himself, he states, “Master Yeti is a producer who specializes in creating music, with super chill vibes. I like to paint pictures with my music so the listener can relate on a whole other level.”

Like with any independent artist, Yeti had to find his own means to invest in his music career. Attending Columbia College Chicago on an art scholarship, Yeti began learning how to become a graphic and web designer, something he prides himself into this day. Additionally, he launched a clothing brand called Veyron Calanariwith his brothers back in 2015.

With the ability to both produce and record, Yeti unleashed his debut single titled “On My Own” at the end of 2019. Fast forward to today, he returns with his newest single titled “Heartbeat,” inspired directly by the film Resident Evil. The meaning behind it? Imagine Chicago being infected with a virus that turns you into a zombie, and the only person who can save the zombies is Master Yeti. On his journey, he goes through hell to find his true love.

AllHipHop: How would you describe your sound?

Master Yeti: My sound is trap and R&B mixed together in a laid back type of vibe. It’s not your everyday sound that you’re used to hearing. I try to do my 808s differently from what everyone else does because I know it’s a lot of 808 patterns out there. My patterns are a little bit different the way I make them, I call it making them trip. I make them stutter.

AllHipHop: What was it like growing up in the South Side of Chicago?

Master Yeti: I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, I came from the hood. I grew up around a lot of poverty, gangbanging, fighting, all that type of stuff. It’s everything you hear on the news and worse. But I ended up sticking to my path, sticking to my truth of what I knew I wanted to become. Growing up as a teenager just being who I am, sticking to school, sticking to the books. I didn’t have to be a part of the streets to have the streets with me, I still gained them for life.

AllHipHop: Biggest influences growing up?

Master Yeti: Tupac, Biggie, Lil Wayne, and Bone Thugs was top notch. When you listen to any of my music, you can hear their influences. I do a lot of melodic stuff because that’s what I grew up listening to. My family’s in the church, my uncle was a famous bass player. He played for Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, R. Kelly, all these other types of people. He did a lot of work with them so I wanted to be like him growing up. I wanted to get out in the limelight. At 15, he was touring. Sadly, he passed away at 39 from cancer. He was touring all the way up until 39 so I wanted to be like that. He was the biggest success in our family growing up.

Coming from the hood and to see him jump up and jump out of there off an instrument, that was amazing, I wanted to have a piece of that. I ended up steering into the art realm: I’m a graphic designer, web designer, and a cinematographer. Plus, I have a clothing brand as well. I got everything. [laughs] The biggest goal is the music, but I want the clothing and film to work simultaneously too.

AllHipHop: Does that mean you do all your own artwork?

Master Yeti: Yes! I started out as a graphic designer, web designer. I had a lot of clients, but I had to take on less projects when I wanted to get into music. I still have some open projects now. On the daily, it’s how I make my money. I do big websites with big companies and still create graphics for clients too. But music is what I love to do to be honest. That’s why I built my home studio. I put a lot of money into the studio and the film equipment as well because I knew I’d want to shoot my own music videos. I make everything work together. I record myself, I mix and engineer my own music. I design the cover artwork. I’m doing all my own videos, all my visual effects. I do everything, I’m a one man team. It’s a lot of work, but it’s my passion. I love what I do and I keep going.

AllHipHop: What was the inspiration behind your name?

Master Yeti: Well a yeti is a legend, it doesn’t really exist, it’s a myth. When I first started making music, friends and family were surprised that I played all my own instruments, figured out the software and could sing. So I thought of myself as a yeti – this kind of unbelievable creature. I try to master everything that I do, so Master Yeti just made sense.

AllHipHop: New single “Heartbeat,” I know this is inspired by Resident Evil correct?

Master Yeti: Yes, “Heartbeat” was inspired by Resident Evil. I fell into a vision when I was watching the latest Resident Evil movie and kind of merged it with Marvel. What if I was like Tony Stark – rich, super-hero with a lot of gadgets? I have this superpower that lets me hear on a different frequency when I’m wearing my headphones – kind of how a dog can only hear a dog whistle. We are in a zombie, apocalyptic time and the only way to find out if a person is fully turned is for me to listen for their heartbeat with my headphones. It’s risky because it means I have to get very close to them. If I hear a heartbeat they can be saved. The song ends up being more of a love song about a girl I’m trying to save from being a zombie.

AllHipHop: Is there going to be a music video?

Master Yeti: Definitely going to shoot a music video and make it look like a movie! I have a vision, just trying to work out all the details. But you can expect it to resemble Resident Evil, that kind of dark, twisted fantasy-like feel.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CYesAwOONfa/

AllHipHop: What does the cover art represent?

Master Yeti: The cover art is a picture of me wearing my headphones – my super power. I like to think that I have the ability to hear what most people can’t. It all flows with the meaning of the song and the vision for the video.

AllHipHop: You did a club remix to “Lulu Lemon,” do you have a love for EDM as well?

Master Yeti: Yes, I like EDM because it’s different. The energy at the club when EDM is playing is lit. See I’m from the hood and everybody from the hood does rap. And that’s cool, but I like to mix some of that up. I try to mix it all up actually. Trap mixed with some EDM. Trap mixed with some Adele. I like to mix stuff up to get a unique sound.

AllHipHop: 3 things you need in the studio?

Master Yeti: I need peace of mind because if I don’t have peace of mind, then I can’t create. I definitely have to smoke to come to the room, but I don’t want to say that. [laughs] I honestly don’t need much to come into here, just peace of mind, a fast running computer, and snacks.

AllHipHop: Talk about your clothing line Veyron Calanari launched in 2015.

Master Yeti: I had been creating logos and designs for clients for so long, I finally thought it was time to do it for myself. My identical twin brother and older brother joined forces and we opened our store in the West Town neighborhood. There were a lot of other small businesses in the area which was cool. It had a good vibe. One of my signature designs is the screaming face, it is a symbol of fortitude. It’s all colors coming together screaming at once, letting people know that no matter what color you are, we all have the same struggles. We all bleed the same. It’s so crazy and that’s why a lot of people came to the brand because that was one of our power factors over other brands in the city, to have that fortitude.

We produce a limited number of pieces in each collection. The idea is that when you buy something from VC, you won’t end up at the club wearing the same thing as the guy next to you. It makes it that much more special. We have a great manufacturer in Italy that is producing our knitwear and working on our denim and footwear collection. I’m excited to wear these new pieces in my upcoming music videos.

AllHipHop: What are you excited for next? Any upcoming projects?

Master Yeti: I’m always excited for the next song, my next beat. But I do have a big project I’ve been working on over the past year or so. I’m looking for space now to house Yeti Studios. It will have three music studios, a full green screen room for all environmental creations and visual FX, and a photography lab. I’m excited to be able to offer a state of the art music, film and photography production studio here in Chicago.

Madonna Fans Blast Nelly For Telling Her To ‘Cover Up’

Nelly gets slammed after telling pop superstar Madonna to put her clothes on. Fans of the 63-year-old “Material Girl” were quick to check the rapper about violating one of the most successful artists in history.

Recently Madonna posted a highly stylized but explicit photograph of her wearing fishnet tights, lace underwear, a bustier, and boots on her Instagram. She cleverly captioned the post “Car Trouble.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZQalAgFFeu/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

While most of the comments were complimentary, the St. Louis native felt inclined to violate. He typed, “Some things should just be left covered up.”

Fans immediately blacked on the multi-GRAMMY winner. One fan that sparked up was Rapper Ja Rule that said, “How can you not love Madonna?”

Other comments called him out as a misogynist.

One person said, “The misogyny in these comments is a sad reflection of the world and Madonna fandom. Express yourself don’t repress yourself at any age!”

While another wrote, “@Nelly because she’s female? Would you comment on a Male artist? It’s ok though, her legacy far out-stands yours.”

This is not the first time that Nelly has been under fire. In 2013, Nelly was asked to stay away from Spelman because of his highly-sexualized video, “Tip Drill,” that played on BET’s after-hours video program Uncut.  The artist wanted to come to campus to do a bone-marrow drive through his foundation.

In a press statement, Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Zenobia Hikes said of his dis-invitation, “Spelman is concerned about the negative images of women in popular culture, particularly the misogynistic lyrics and images that constantly portray women in a sexual nature.”

Nelly has not responded to the Madonna backlash but is looking forward to several new projects including his scripted pseudo-reality show, The Real Husbands of Hollywood.

W. Kamau Bell Worried About Documentary On Bill Cosby Now That He Is Out Of Prison

W. Kamau Bell has admitted he is “worried” about his documentary on Bill Cosby.

Speaking to People, the comedian discussed his latest project, “We Need To Talk About Cosby,” which explores the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against the 84-year-old stand-up star.

“I’m very worried about it,” the United Shades of America host said. “I’m still worried about it now. It is a very charged situation – especially with him getting out of prison, it becomes even more charged.”

Bell explained that the four-part documentary highlights both Cosby’s work and influence and includes interviews with women who have accused him of misconduct.

In 2018, Cosby was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault after Andrea Constand alleged he had drugged and assaulted her at her house in 2004. The verdict was overturned two years into his sentence due to a “due process violation.”

“This is for people who grew up in Cosby’s America,” Bell continued. “It is a difficult thing to talk about. I think the documentary is more nuanced than a lot of people were expecting or a lot more complicated. I sit here, and I’m still not sure how I will come through this on the other side.”
Bell added that he believes the survivors who have come forward with allegations against Cosby, adding, “I wish we could just celebrate Bill Cosby as I think we would, if at this point in his life, as somebody who had just did the good things he did.”

“We Need to Talk About Cosby” premiered on Showtime in the U.S. last week.

‘Matrimony!’ Couple Gets Engaged On Stage During Wale Concert

Wale is starting to rethink being a bachelor, especially, after a couple got engaged during his Monday, Jan. 31 concert.

The D.C. rapper took to social media to share the news and his feelings about the proposal.

First, he posted a picture of the moment captured by zaypremestudios.

Then he tweeted, “Dawg somebody proposed to they girl at my show last night ON STAGE…and I haven’t stopped thinking bout it . The girl was SO happy shaking and cryin ..That level of love is so intimidating I never really grasped it.. to see it like that up close was amazing.”

The “Lotus Flower Bomb” artist said that he actually “was in on it.” Apparently, he prearranged for the guy to use his stage to get on bended knee and propose to his lady. After she said, “Yes,” the chart-topper performed his 2015 hit with R&B crooner Usher on the background, “Matrimony.”

This isn’t the first time that fans have heard about Wale being a little bit sappy (and afraid) over love.

In 2020, during his guest appearance of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table he shared his love for women, but trepidation about getting seriously involved.

“I got famous young in D.C., and I’ve seen how women were acting around me. And I think it’s shaped how I viewed women moving forward,” he said about why it is hard for him to really settle down. “You’ve got to understand, you’re talking to a rapper. All I see is promiscuous behavior. All I see is, oh my man play for this team and his wife cheated on him for somebody…I’m seeing this first hand. Then I fell head over heels for somebody in this industry, I seen how vicious it can be and how gutted I was. I was never really the same.”

“In our industry, entertainment, everybody moves on so fast. We can’t even argue. Think about that. We argue, two days later, you in Greystone with a fourth-string running back,” he continued explaining why it is hard to trust women. “So when you talk about girls…any conflict, they’re gone. You can’t even reconcile. You’re just on to the next one.”

When asked to tell the world what he is looking for in a companion, he says, “I want a woman to show me what I want in a woman.”

He said he was looking for a friend and that loyalty and understanding are of premium importance to him.

“I am not a regular man, for better or worse,” he confessed. “My bad is bad and my good is amazing.”

He said, that but also confessed that he wanted to be in love. Monday night proved that the hopeless romantic does have a soft spot and is waiting for the right one to come along.

Alyssa Scott has insisted she’s “at peace” following the news that her ex Nick Cannon is expecting another child two months after the death of their son.

“The Masked Singer” host and model Scott welcomed a son named Zen in June, and he tragically passed away aged five months after a battle with brain cancer in December.

Nick Cannon confirmed that model Bre Tiesi is expecting his eighth child, and Scott responded to the news by insisting she’s “at peace” and “will not judge.”

“I want to thank every single person who has messaged or thought of me over the last course of these last few months,” Alyssa Scott wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. “I always say Zen expanded my heart in ways I never thought possible. He filled that space with compassion, knowing I would need that most.”

I will consciously decide what I will participate in. I am surrounded by love. God, my mom, dad, sister, brother and daughter continue to carry me.”

The 41-year-old admitted on his show that he knew Tiesi was pregnant before Zen passed away, and they tried to hold off sharing the news to “respect the grieving process with Alyssa.”

However, he was forced to make a confirmation after photographers snapped him and Tiesi attending a gender reveal party in Malibu, California, on Sunday.

Nate Dogg’s Son Nhale Drops Strip Club Anthem “Beautiful Girl”

Nate Dogg‘s son Nhale has dropped a banger for the West Coast and purveyors of strip club culture. The singer, who definitely has his dad‘s chops, weaves a loose tale of a doting mother who has a day job as a stripper. In the club, her number one client is none other than the singer. Other than that, the song really offers two points of view: how hard-working mothers do what they have to do to survive and how men sustain that lifestyle through their own activities. Nhale also shows that greatness is attainable through hard work and dedication, not just nepotism.

Doja Cat Forced To Drop Out Of BRIT Awards Out Of Health Concerns

Doja Cat has pulled out of her performance at the BRIT Awards due to Covid-19 cases amongst her crew.

The “Kiss Me More” singer was due to take to the stage at London’s O2 Arena on February 8th alongside Ed Sheeran, Little Simz, Liam Gallagher, Dave, and BRITs Rising Star winner Holly Humberstone.

However, she announced that several positive Covid-19 results within her team had prevented them from rehearsing.

https://twitter.com/DojaCat/status/1488273181194563587?s=20&t=PWzb52REGcw1ZuCeoewLpg

“It’s simply not safe for us to continue to rehearse together and put each other in harm’s way. I can’t wait to perform for my U.K. fans as soon as I can. Take care of yourselves.”

Representatives for the awards show retweeted the “Say So” star’s post but are yet to reveal her replacement.

It is unclear if Doja will still be attending the ceremony, as she is nominated for International Artist of the Year and International Song of the Year for “Kiss Me More.”

The 2022 BRIT Awards will be hosted by Mo Gilligan, with red carpet reporting from Clara Amfo and Maya Jama.

The Light Of Truth: Ida B. Wells

Ida B. Wells (full name Ida B. Wells-Barnett) was an African-American journalist and activist who spearheaded the anti-lynching movement in the United States during the 1890s.

She played an integral role in founding and leading groups that strived for African-American justice throughout her life. She was born July 16, 1862, in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and passed away March 25, 1931 (aged 68) in Chicago, Illinois.

The early life of Ida B. Wells

Ida B. Wells was born into slavery and educated at Rust University, a freedmen’s school in Holly Springs, Mississippi. At 14, she started teaching at a country school and continued a successful career as an educator even after moving to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1884. There, she attended Fisk University in Nashville.

1887 – Court case and entry into journalism

In 1887, Wells took legal action against the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad for being forcibly removed from her seat after refusing a seat in the “colored only” car. Wells took this to a local court and won $500 in compensation. However, the Tennessee Supreme Court reversed the Circuit Court decision, ruling against Wells.

In 1891, Wells began using the pen name Iola to write newspaper articles that were critical of the lack of education available to African-American children.

When her teaching contract was not renewed, she turned to journalism as a way to continue her activism. Eventually, she developed an interest in the 1881 African-American newspaper, the Memphis Free Speech.

1892 – Lynchings and early work

In 1892, three of Wells’ friends were lynched by a mob. This led Wells to begin an editorial campaign against lynching, which quickly resulted in the trashing of her newspaper’s office.

However, Ida B. Wells didn’t back down. She continued her anti-lynching crusade as a freelancer, writing for newspapers such as the New York Age and then becoming a lecturer and an organizer of anti-lynching societies. Wells also traveled to several U.S. cities and even overseas to Great Britain to spread her cause.

Throughout her travels and studies, she used statistics and quantitative data to help reach her conclusions that would form the basis of her campaign messages. She found that the “idea of rape and even criminal behavior is not so much connected to lynching, but that lynching was a means to keep blacks—who were very economically competitive at this point—to keep blacks down.” She also discovered that when black men were accused of rape, it was usually consensual sex with white women.

1895 – Marriage

Ida B. Wells released her conclusions, but they sparked violence and riots while she lived in Philadelphia. It became dangerous for her to return to Memphis, so she decided to continue traveling across the U.S. and also Europe to spread her findings around the lynchings. However, Wells eventually settled in Chicago. Wells found that there were many Black political organizations, newspapers, and interracial activism which she could participate in.

Wells married in 1895 to Ferdinand L. Barnett, a Chicago lawyer, editor, and public official. She adopted the name Wells-Barnett. She began to travel less but still maintained an active stance against lynching, involving herself with many of Chicago’s affairs. Wells contributed to the Chicago Conservator, the newspaper that her husband owned. She also worked with other local journals, publishing detailed articles that covered lynchings while helping to rally local African American women to various causes.

1898 – Secretary of the Afro-American Council

After 1898, Ida Wells-Barnett served as secretary of the National Afro-American Council. She took part in the Niagara Movement in 1909 and went on to help found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Wells-Barnett eventually became a member of the executive committee at NAACP but distanced herself after becoming dissatisfied with its white and elite Black leadership.

Wells-Barnett would go on to investigate the brutal assaults of the African-American community in Springfield in 1908, and she worked with the National Equal Rights League to call for President Woodrow Wilson to put an end to discriminatory hiring practices for government jobs.

1910 – First President of the Negro Fellowship League

In 1910, Wells-Barnett went on to found and became the first president of the Negro Fellowship League. This organization aimed to help new migrants from the South integrate within their communities. In 1913, she also founded the Chicago Alpha Suffrage Club–possibly one of the very Black women’s suffrage groups. During the same period, Wells also achieved many firsts for the Black community in Chicago. She opened the first Black women’s club and the first Back kindergarten.

From 1913 to 1916, she was a probation officer of the Chicago municipal court. Although she was known for her militant beliefs, her fervor and insistence became a strength that helped her rise in popularity. Wells-Barnett remained in Chicago for the rest of her life, continuing her political activism and even running for the Illinois State Senate seat as an independent. While she didn’t win, she became a beacon of hope and progress for the Black community.

How Ida B. Wells is celebrated today

In July 2018, Chicago named a street after Ida B. Wells. In the same month, activists raised a total of $300,000 which was used to e#### a monument to Wells-Barnett. It was unveiled in 2021 and given the official name “The Light of Truth Ida B. Wells National Monument.” It was created by sculptor Richard Hunt and was dedicated in the South Side neighborhood where Wells-Barnett spent most of her life.

In addition, Wells-Barnett was turned into a Barbie doll in 2022. The Ida Wells-Barnett doll is the Barbie brand’s latest edition in their Inspiring Women collection.

Ida Wells-Barnett continues to be an inspiration to the Black community in America and across the world and is hailed for her work in investigating the lynchings of Black people in Memphis.
