M.E.I. Recordings Continue its Rise Through the Music Industry

Music is something that a lot of people find a passion for as a youth. As many age, the dream slowly fades. However, there are those that the dream never dies, and some force constantly pushes them in the direction of their passion. For first-generation, Cuban-Haitian American Meikhel Philogene, this was the case. While still in school, Meikhel founded M.E.I. Recordings in September 2017. By October 2017, the company signed their first talent, Cameron Dietz.

M.E.I. (“Music. Entertainment. Imagination.”) Recordings is headquartered in Miami, FL and was started as a management company, but quickly grew into much more. In 2020, M.E.I. Recordings expanded by adding a public relations division. Today, M.E.I. Recordings’ public relations clients include $DVLLV$, A Beck, CimplyDan, Donnie Visa, James Qupid, Lada Beseda, Laudz, Marlounsly, Maya, Naomi Sky, Nia Ray, Noah Singer, Soleil, and Sylvia Bremer. The company’s management division still consists of Cameron Dietz, but also includes the singer-songwriter’s alter ego The Singslayer. The company is very proud of the diversity it has through the representation of different music genres, races, genders, etc. Meikhel and M.E.I. Recordings are advocates of change and champion diversity.

M.E.I. Recordings have made great strides within the music industry in a short period of time. M.E.I. Recordings have aided artists to proliferate and gain attention from countless major media outlets including, but not limited to, Rolling Stone, Fox Soul, Popjustice, Hip Hop Weekly, Consequence, Earmilk, Flaunt, MTV, Highsnobiety, and Uproxx. The artists have garnered millions of streams and views. Their music is on rotation on Roku. They have opened up for acts such as Ella Mai, H.E.R., and Summer Walker at major music festivals and tours. The artists have also garnered attention and gotten praise from various entertainers and notable figures such as Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Layton Greene, Dennis Rodman, Marlon Wayans, Jay Pharoah, and Ken Jeong.

Last year, in October, Cameron Dietz released a song, “Old Soul,” with multi-platinum, Hip-Hop legend The Game. This year, M.E.I. Recordings were further expanded by adding a record label division. Ike Rhein released a song and music video, “Messed It Up,” with platinum recording artist Luh Kel in January 2022 in partnership with M.E.I. Recordings’ record label. The music video for “Messed It Up” has since accumulated about a million views. M.E.I. Recordings have more major collaborations set for 2022 and beyond.

M.E.I. The recordings’ story isn’t over. The company plans to continue its expansion by adding a sync licensing and music publishing division later this year. Additionally, M.E.I. Recordings are working on adding video production and talent agency divisions with hopes of launching them in Q1 or Q2 of 2023.

The founder and CEO, Meikhel, wants the “M.E.I.” brand to become a global conglomerate. He is determined on having some involvement with an artist that is nominated and/or wins a Grammy. M.E.I. Recordings is currently looking for more talent to bolster its record label and management rosters. Let MEI help YOU.

Alicia Keys Gushes Over Quasi Janet Jackson Crush?

Recently, the youngest Jackson prodigy — Janet — is reemerging on center stage. Undoubtedly, her iconic documentary is bringing up a beaucoup of information. Therefore, interesting tidbits are constantly resurfacing. So now, Alicia Keys is gushing over a quasi-crush from the Pop superstar.

Back in 2008, a straightforward Janet Jackson answers a risqué question. The invented inquiry comes from E! Online. Accordingly, the publication prods and the Pop princess willingly responds. In short, the KEYS crooner pops up.

Of course, the inquest involves a provocative proposition. After pitching a “lesbian” love-affair, Ms. Jackson, honestly responds to the gossip rag’s question. Consequently, she contends, “I think I would pick Alicia Keys.”

Furthermore, Janet explains why she chooses the Grammy decorated musician. Simplicity surrounds her emphatic reply. “I think she’s wonderful.” Soon, the “Show Me Love” singer reacts to the affection.

Thus, the self-assured Superwoman takes to social media. There, she matter-of-factly mentions, “I always knew I was BAE.” Next, the Instagram caption boasts, “But when @janetjackson says it 💥💥💥💥.” Certainly, the four exploding emojis emphasize her insight.

Finally, the Instagram interaction culminates with a friendly suggestion, “Make sure you watch OUR Sis, THE ICON’s Doc 💯💯💯💯💯.”Overall, between the Virtuoso and the Musical Icon there is an immense amount of respect.

Rihanna’s ‘Anti’ Album Joins The Billboard 200 Chart’s 300-Week Club

Robyn Rihanna Fenty had a lot to celebrate this week. The Barbadian billionaire announced she is having her first child with Hip Hop artist Rakim “ASAP Rocky” Mayers.

While Rihanna is set to add a baby to her life in the coming months, she also continues to find success with her music career. Her 2016 studio LP, Anti, currently sits at #141 on the latest Billboard 200 chart.

This is Anti‘s 300th appearance on Billboard‘s weekly album rankings. Rihanna’s eighth studio album is her first project to join the exclusive 300-week club.

Anti can be considered Rihanna’s most commercially successful album to date. 2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad held a spot on the Billboard 200 for 100 weeks. 2010’s Loud held on for 75 weeks. The former #1 Unapologetic had a 66-week Billboard 200 lifespan.

Upon its release, Anti peaked atop the Billboard 200 chart for two non-consecutive weeks in 2016. It earned 3x-Platinum certification from the RIAA and multiple Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Rihanna’s global smash “Work” featuring Drake is part of the Anti tracklist. That 8x-Platinum collaboration remained at #1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for 9 weeks. Riri also recruited SZA for the album opener “Consideration.”

Anti also hosts “Kiss It Better,” “Desperado,” “Needed Me,” and “Love on the Brain.” The deluxe edition of Anti includes the bonus track “Sex with Me” produced by Boi-1da, Frank Dukes, Kuk Harrell, and Vinylz.

India.Arie Talks Pulling Her Content From Spotify Following Joe Rogan Controversy

Comedian/podcaster Joe Rogan found himself in a media firestorm over the last few days. Several musicians, including India.Arie, decided to take their work off Spotify in response to Rogan allegedly promoting COVID-19 vaccination misinformation.

The controversy began to make headlines after Canadian-American singer Neil Young revealed he wanted to remove his music from Spotify. Young’s move was in protest to Rogan and The Joe Rogan Experience podcast guests’ views on the vaccine.

Other recording artists followed Neil Young’s lead. R&B performer India.Arie posted a message on her Instagram page announcing she “must walk through” the door Young opened by taking down her music catalog and SongVersation podcast from Spotify.

India.Arie Speaks With Tamron Hall About Her Issues With Spotify

Later this week, India.Arie will make an appearance on The Tamron Hall Show. The Friday, February 4th edition of the daytime talk program will include the Acoustic Soul album creator explaining her decision to pull her content off Spotify.

“Yes, I decided to pull my music and my podcast from Spotify but it’s dual. One is the Joe Rogan conversation and for me his language around race and some of the things I’ve seen and heard, but also coupled with that, there is the treatment of artists by Spotify,” India.Arie tells Tamron Hall in a preview clip.

The four-time Grammy winner continues, “And so artists are underpaid and Joe Rogan gets paid all this money and it’s hard for me to, these days, just sit back and go, ‘Oh, well, that’s how it goes.’ I made a commitment with myself, after reading this book by Martha Beck called The Way of Integrity – she challenges the reader to an integrity cleanse and it means telling the whole truth all the time and see what it will make of your life.”

Following The Backlash, Joe Rogan Responds On Instagram

Joe Rogan signed an exclusive multi-year licensing agreement with Spotify in 2020. The landmark podcasting deal is said to be worth around $100 million. Spotify apparently does not have any control over the content on The Joe Rogan Experience.

In reaction to the backlash over the conversations on his podcast, Joe Rogan posted a nearly 10-minute video addressing his coverage of COVID-19 and the vaccines. Rogan stated that he was not trying to promote misinformation.

The 54-year-old UFC color commentator also promised to “try to balance out these more controversial viewpoints with other people’s perspectives, so we can maybe find a better point of view.” Spotify announced the company will now add a “content advisory” to any podcast episode discussing COVID-19, and Joe Rogan backed that upcoming change to the service.

Harry Pace: The Black Music Mogul Before Berry Gordy, Diddy, and Jay-Z

Harry Pace and his record label, Black Swan

When talking about the most significant black music producers, songwriters, and record companies in history, we often think about modern names and labels. Berry Gord with Motown. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Roc-A-Fella. Sean “Diddy” Combs’ with his Bad Boy imprint and Quincy Jones are a few names that spring to mind.

However, few people remember or even know about the first Black record mogul, Harry Pace, and his record label, Black Swan.

Not many have explored this far back in Black music culture. Black Swan was essentially Motown before Motown existed. It was a huge American jazz and blues record label founded in 1921 in Harlem, New York. Black Swan was the first black record label owned, operated, and marketed to African-Americans. But little is known about the label or its founder.

The early life of Harry Pace

Harry Pace (full name Harry Herbert Pace) was born on January 6, 1884, in Covington, Georgia. He was the son of Charles Pace and Nancy Ferris Pace. Pace’s father was a blacksmith by trade that passed away while he was still an infant, leaving his mother to be the only one to raise him.

Harry Pace graduated from elementary school at twelve and finished his studies at Atlanta university seven years later as a valedictorian. W.E.B. Du Bois, an American sociologist and historian, was one of Pace’s instructors throughout his academic life.

Once he graduated, Pace worked at a printing company, in banking, and also for insurance companies across Atlanta and later Memphis.

Humble beginnings in the music world

In 1912, Pace met W.C. Handy. The two had become great friends since Pace moved to Memphis, and they both expressed a passion for music. They would write songs together and later founded the Pace and Handy Music Company. Pace would also meet his future wife, Ethlynde Bibb, during this period.

Together with Handy, the two worked with composers like Fletcher Henderson and William Grant Sill. Pace later moved to New York to manage a sheet music business but decided that he would instead form his own record company.

Thus, he founded Pace Phonograph Corporations Inc. in March 1921. With $30,000 in borrowed capital, he quickly grew the company and also founded the label Black Swan Records. The name was a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, a well-known entertainer in the 19th century that was known to fans as the “Black Swan.”

Harry Pace would later sign Ethel Waters as the first major black artist on the Black Swan label. She signed a deal in the same year the company was founded, and her subsequent touring helped the Black Swan label grow immensely in popularity. She participated in shows with big names such as Louis Armstrong and Joe Smith, which helped grow her own popularity alongside the Black Swan label.

Black Swan would continue the trend of signing young singers that specialized in Blues music. This included Trixie Smith and Alberta Hunter. It wasn’t long before Black Swan was shipping thousands of records each day from their processing plant, making Pace the very first Black record mogul in a little under a year.

The growth of Black Swan

In just one year, Black Swan had grown out of Pace’s basement to a staggering 30 employees, seven district managers in multiple cities, over 1,000 dealers and agents, and even its own 8-man orchestra. The initial $30,000 investment grew to an income of over $100,000, and Pace even renamed the company from the Pace Phonograph Company to the Black Swan Phonograph Company in 1923.

But despite the growing popularity of Black Swan, the company had yet to participate in radio shows. It was quickly becoming a growing medium for listening to music, but Pace didn’t have the required connections with radio stations to spread his label’s music. As technology improved and times changed, records were slowly phased out, and radio became the standard for casual music consumption.

But in addition to this, Pace had invested his resources into diversifying the output of records. However, Black Swan’s major sellers were mostly Blues records. This eventually led to bankruptcy for Black Swan in 1923 and the catalog was sold the following year.

The impact of Black Swan

But despite Black Swan filing for bankruptcy, its impact was so significant that black musicians across the country were continuing to grow in popularity. Black Swan had single-handedly helped show the Black community that they could get recording contracts and shows and generate enormous profits. Many of Black Swan’s signed artists would go on to grow successful careers with record labels and companies that would’ve never paid attention to them in the past.

Pace ultimately did not return to the music business. Instead, he returned to his past expertise and became the founder of the Northeastern Life Insurance Company. This eventually became one of the largest Black-owned businesses in the north. He continued to invest his wealth to open law firms and even finished his law degree. Pace would eventually pass away in Chicago on July 19, 1943, at 59.

Celebrating Harry Pace today

Harry Pace may not be a well-known name in the music industry today, and he might be a relatively obscure name when it comes to Black history as a whole. However, there’s no denying Pace’s impact on the Black music scene and the community overall. His success helped thousands of Black musicians and artists rise to the top and created an untold number of opportunities.

Even after Black Swan filed for bankruptcy, Pace was unphased and continued to support the Black community in the United States with his numerous businesses.

Interestingly, Black Swan Records was the first to record the “Black National Anthem,” “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which was played before all games during the 2021 season.

‘Janet Jackson’ Documentary Tops More Than 15 Million Viewers

There is no denying that Janet Jackson is an entertainment business icon. The singer/songwriter/dancer/actress dominated the music scene in the 1980s and 1990s as a showbiz force.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Janet’s debut self-titled album, Lifetime and A&E aired a documentary titled Janet Jackson. Other celebrities such as Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, and Tito Jackson appeared on the program. Janet Jackson and her brother Randy Jackson executive produced the project.

According to Variety, Janet Jackson was a huge ratings success for the A&E Networks broadcasting company. The two-night, four-hour doc drew more than 15.7 million total viewers across Lifetime and A&E’s linear and digital platforms.

In addition, #JanetJacksonDoc reportedly ranked #1 on Twitter and amassed 1.1 million interactions on the social media service. Janet Jackson is said to be the most social program for Lifetime since 2019’s Surviving R. Kelly.

Janet Jackson’s Janet Jackson studio LP came out in 1982. The future Rock & Roll Hall of Famer found undeniable commercial success four years later with the chart-topping Control album.

Over the last 40 years, Janet Jackson scored seven #1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart and ten #1 songs on the Hot 100 chart. Her “That’s The Way Love Goes” single, off 1993’s 6x-Platinum Janet studio LP, spent eight weeks in the Hot 100’s top spot.

Janet Jackson is one of only four acts to have a #1 album for four successive decades alongside Barbra Streisand, Bruce Springsteen, and U2. She is also a five-time Grammy winner, two-time Emmy winner, and ten-time MTV Video Music Award winner.

2 Chainz Reveals The Dark Side Of Rap Fame

Meanwhile, 2 Chainz made a startling revelation about the downside of being a famous rapper recently.

“I actually got arrested more times being a rapper than when I was trapping and doing everything else,” 2 Chainz told Home Grown Radio. “I got locked up in the airport, I had a four-finger ring in LaGuardia. They charged me with brass knuckles. Locked me up. I got caught in L.A., back when I was on the lean bad, they went in my bag, found lean, took me off the plane.

2 Chainz continued, “I got f##### up in Oklahoma for, they say it was a hostage situation, something. I don’t know what they try. Standoff. They told the tour bus while we us on it, disconnected the generator. You know early on I just felt like maybe I was a target or something, but you know.”

The Houston, Texas hitmaker would also like to work with singer Adele one day. Megan revealed she has seen the viral video mashup of Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge” and her hit “Body.”

“Oh my God. Yes. I’ve seen it,” Megan exclaimed. “If Adele wants me to come get on the track, be the dancer, I’m there, I’m here for it,” she added. “Somebody tell her to call me because I’m ready!”

Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion set pulses racing with another of her collaborative efforts. The raunchy video for “Lick,” her new song with dancehall artiste, Shenseea, lit up the internet when it was released last week. Watch it below.

The “Seeing Green” rapper revealed that she is going “full circle,” making a return to “Mixtape Nicki” and her roots. Nicki Minaj made an explosive introduction when she emerged on the scene with her gritty lyricism and impressive array of flows and cadences, complete with matching alter-egos. First was “Playtime is Over” in 2007, “Sucka Free” came a year later. “Beam Me Up Scotty” completed the “Mixtape Nicki” trilogy in 2009. Trae Tha Truth and OMB Bloodbath Jump On DJ Hawk’s New Song “Sunny Daze”

DJ Hawk is arguably one of the hottest DJs/producers in Houston. Now, he wants to make his popularity known worldwide and brings along fellow H-Town superstars Trae Tha Truth and OMB Bloodbath along for the rise with the two accompanying him on the release of the new song “Sunny Daze.”

Produced by Apexx and Hawk-himself. The song is a molotov cocktail that blends Trae Tha Truth’s signature raspy sound and street storytelling with OMB Bloodbath’s smooth cadence and newfound star power over Hawk’s crafty orchestration that once dropped on the world will make a game-changing explosion. Different from normal releases, Hawk embraces the new frontier of NFT and adds redeemable editions of the song to the drop.

Available now in four different editions with three rarities on the Hawkeye Productions website. From Common to Diamond, various Sunny Daze NFTs include merchandise, vinyl, and even a chance to cameo in the visual for the track. Hawk is the head of the curve as one of the first to embrace the new technology.

“NFTs are a new way for independent artists to take control and make money off of their art,” Hawk said on accompanying the NFT with the new song. “It’s harder, especially during times like these, to make money as an artist since tours/shows are getting canceled and we’re only getting fractions of pennies per stream.  So I decided to partner with Moxie Labs, a tech company based out of Philly, and create this way for my fans to connect directly with me by owning a piece of my art with the end goal of us ALL making money.”

In Texas, DJ Hawk, born Alexander Haq, rose through the status quo as a radio-club DJ, connecting and networking with the region’s up-and-coming-turned-superstars artists and breaking new sounds to an organically driven trendsetting market. Hawk is the current show producer for The Breakfast Club with DJ Envy, Charlamagne Da God and Angela Yee at Houston’s 93.7 The Beat.

“I’ve learned everything from the old school to new school gear,” says Hawk. “I prefer to use Pro Tools. But, in the end, all I want is to make great music that makes people feel good.  So, if I can turn it on and my fiancé or sister, the ladies, like it and catch a vibe, then that’s a good thing.”

“Sunny Daze” is the second appetizer from the popular DJ off the forthcoming project following the Pzee Fire and Stoppa-featured track “Escape” released last year.  Trae Tha Truth appears on the track courtesy of ABN/EMPIRE and OMB Bloodbath appears courtesy of Interscope Records.

Lisa Ling Say Prince Used The Alias Karl Marx

Lisa Ling has recalled the “weird interaction” she had with Prince back in the early 2000s.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night to promote her six-part documentary series “Take Out,” host Jimmy asked about the time Prince reached out to the TV journalist after he had spotted her on the talk show “The View.”

“He gets on the phone. I hear this voice, you know, this kind of soft voice, and it was him. I could tell clearly. He asked me if I wanted to go to the TLC concert with him. So, I’m like, ‘Yeah! Yes, I would love to.’ So, he said, ‘I’m going to send a car to pick you up, come to my hotel, ask for Karl Marx, and they’ll let you come up to my room.’ He registered as Karl Marx,” she recounted, referring to the German philosopher.

“I go up. He opens the door, and he is a pretty diminutive guy, and he looked at my shoes, and he said, ‘I really like your shoes.’ It felt like he wanted to try them on, but I thought that would be weird!”

Lisa went on to detail how they went to the TLC gig and then headed back to his hotel. And while she wouldn’t recommend going to a stranger’s room, the 48-year-old felt “pretty confident” she would be fine as the musician was “going through his Jehovah’s Witness stage.”

“So, we ended up talking until five in the morning about philosophy and having these very, very serious discussions. And that was it. I left Karl Marx’s room and went back, and he asked me to come over the next day again. And so, I went over there, and we talked until five o’clock in the morning. Had a great, incredibly stimulating discussion,” she remembered.

However, Lisa’s brief relationship with Prince came to a grinding halt after he saw her on “The View” the following day, and she spoke about a past boyfriend.

“I got a call at five o’clock the next morning, and it was Prince calling himself, the guy didn’t call, and he said, ‘Who were you talking about?’ And I said, ‘I was talking about someone in my past.’ As though we were, like, we had a relationship or something. But I was talking about someone in my past. And that was it. He never called me. That was my relationship with Prince,” she continued, adding: “It was really strange. I mean, I still to this day think that he is the greatest artist who ever lived. But it was a little bit of a weird interaction that we had over the course of a couple days.”

Prince died at the age of 57 in 2016.

Kanye West Documentary Directors Refuse His Final Cut Demand

Kanye West won’t be given control of the final cut of Netflix’s jeen-yuhs documentary.

The film’s directors Coodie and Chike told Rolling Stone they aren’t giving up creative control of the three-part documentary. The two made their stance clear after Kanye West publicly demanded to be involved in the final cut.

“I’m going to say this kindly for the last time,” ‘Ye wrote on Instagram. “I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix. Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image. Thank you in advance.”

Coodie and Chike, who’ve been collaborating with ‘Ye for years, weren’t surprised by his attempt to take command of the documentary. They said it was all part of covering someone like Kanye West.

“If Kanye wasn’t as polarizing of a character as he was, we wouldn’t have an interesting doc,” Chike explained. “This just comes with the territory. This is Kanye’s personality, so you just embrace it and then it’s going to take us, take us wherever it takes us…. This is the person that we’re dealing with. We all know what we’re dealing with.”

Netflix’s jeen-yuhs is scheduled to premiere on February 16.
