Jim Jones & Maino Team Up For Lobby Boyz Album

New York City-bred rappers Jim Jones and Jermaine “Maino” Coleman have joined forces for a new collaborative project. The duo is collectively known as Lobby Boyz.

Jim Jones and Maino will release their self-titled album on May 27 via ONErpm. Guest features on Lobby Boyz include Fivio Foreign, Fabolous, Benny The Butcher, Young M.A., and more.

A music video for “Lobby Boyz Anthem” featuring Lyrivelli dropped in February. The “No Bobby V” visual with Fabolous landed earlier this month.

Harlem native Jim Jones rose to prominence as a member of the NYC-based The Diplomats. His solo discography contains the projects such as Harlem: Diary of a Summer, Hustler’s P.O.M.E. (Product of My Environment), and El Capo.

Maino’s album catalog includes the studio LPs If Tomorrow Comes… and The Day After Tomorrow. The Brooklyn representative also dropped several mixtapes and EPs since 2005, including K.O.B. and Yellow Tape: King Kong & Godzilla with Uncle Murda.

U.K. Rapper Potter Payper Announces His Debut Album Is On The Way

Potter Payper announced his highly-anticipated debut album will be released this year. 

After teasing the upcoming project in a series of Instagram posts, the East London rapper revealed he’s completed more than a dozen songs. The long-awaited project will finally be ready this year. 

“I’m making my first album and I would say I’m well on the way,” Potter Payper told Rolling Stone. “I’ve finished about 30 per cent of it — I’ve got, like, 15 to 16 songs completed.” 

Last week, the “PMW” hitmaker shared his new song with Ed Sheeran. “Oh yeah Ed Sheeran shouted me to do a 2step remix…….. go run it up.”

Potter Payper Reflects On His Changing Path

He also revealed that his music career has allowed him to achieve a level of harmony he’s never experienced before. 

“When I was growing up, I couldn’t look my nan in her eyes and see how she knew I was lying or doing the wrong thing. But just before she died, I could look her in her eyes and that’s how I knew I was on the correct path,” he said. “I have three sisters that were being looked after by my nan — but now I can look after them. As long as I continue doing this, that lets me be at peace.” 

Potter Payper made his long-awaited return to the U.K. rap scene in 2020 after serving time behind bars for dealing drugs. He dropped the final entry in his Training Day mixtape series, which earned him a No.3 spot in the U.K. charts.  

Potter Payper prides himself on his storytelling abilities and his evocative songwriting. “A lot of people that rap in general terms don’t know how to make you feel it,” he explained. “I found a way to be able to make you see it with my words because I see it myself.”  

This gift, he says, stems from his upbringing in a tough estate in Dagenham, East London. “Coming from where I’m from, I was a small little fat white boy and didn’t have a voice in the hood,” Potter Payper explains.

Jimmie Allen Taps, CeeLo Green, T-Pain, J Lo & More For New Album “Tulip Drive”

Jimmie Allen has revealed the tracklist for his feature-packed third studio album Tulip Drive. 

The Grammy award-nominated artist has tapped artists including CeeLo Green, T-Pain, and J-Lo for the 17-track project. J-Lo features on the lead single, “On My Way,” which is available to pre-order from Friday, May 27. Tulip Drive is due to arrive Friday, June 24.

The project marks a change in the way Jimmie Allen creates music. “This is the first [album] where I chose to write songs about my own personal experiences, thoughts and hopes,” he explained.

The Delaware native named the project after the street his late grandmother grew up on. His previous album titles are also inspired by his family ties. Allen’s critically acclaimed 2018 debut album Mercury Lane, which featured Nelly and Monica, was named for the street Allen grew up on. Likewise, Bettie James & Bettie James Gold Edition, released in 2020 and 2021, respectively, are named in honor of his grandmother, Bettie Snead, and father, James “Big Jim” Allen. They passed away in 2014 and 2019, respectively. 

Jimmie Allen will be hoping for chart success after scoring three No.1 singles on his first two projects. Mercury Lane’s “Make Me Want To” and “Best Shot” both topped the Billboard Country Airplay chart. He then earned his third No. 1 with his duet with Brad Paisley, “Freedom Was a Highway” from the Bettie James Gold Edition album.

After touring with Nelly last year, Jimmie Allen will be hitting the road as Carrie Underwood’s special guest on “The Denim & Rhinestones” tour. The 40-stop tour commences in South Carolina in October before wrapping in Washington in spring 2023.

Jay-Z Recalls Hearing the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya” For The First Time

Jay-Z revealed his reaction to hearing the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya” from his 1994 debut album Ready To Die.  

The Roc Nation boss spoke during TIDAL’s “A Toast To Biggie” Twitter Spaces conversation, celebrating Biggie’s 50th birthday. Jay-Z said the song was so good that it inspired him to write four songs later that same night.  

“Biggs gave me the ‘Who Shot Ya’ CD — he called me like it was like we had some kind of beef or something,” Jay-Z explained. “He was like, ‘yo meet me on 120th right now.’ I jump in my car, I’m heavy. I’m like, ‘what’s going on with Biggs?’ I mean, I fly up there. And I get out my car and get in his car and he plays the song and he was like, ‘yeah, you keep the uh,’ it was a cassette tape actually. He was like, ‘yeah you keep that.’” 

Jay-Z Was Pushed To Write New Music

According to Hov, he was so inspired by the track that he wrote four songs that night. However, he says his cuts were not as good as “Who Shot Ya.” 

“I wrote like four songs that night,” Jay-Z continued. “None of them was as good as ‘Who Shot Ya’ but it was still like four songs. It was just, again it was that friendly competition like just trying to push each other to be the best.” 

Diddy also chimed in on the conversation hosted by Elliot Wilson. He gave the legendary rapper his flowers and said Hov “filled” the shoes left behind after Biggie’s death in 1997.  

“You came in and we definitely give thanks,” Diddy told Jay-Z. “You definitely came, and I just know how much Big really looked up to Jay. They looked up to each other. That is crazy you had to step into the shoes of two people. That’s all it was was those two people. They had things on lock.”

Isaiah Rashad To Give First Interview To Joe Budden Since Alleged Sex Tape Leak

Isaiah Rashad has given an interview to Joe Budden addressing the explicit tape that appeared to show the TDE artist engaged in sex acts with two men that leaked online in February. 

“When all of the chaos broke and I saw the news and the headlines, my first thing as a journalist was, I’m gonna watch that interview when it happens,” Joe Budden said while Isaiah Rashad laughed awkwardly. “I wonder who the hell’s gonna have to go with that.” The rapper-turned podcaster returned the laughter replying, “And it’s me.” 

He then questioned the TDE rapper about his sexuality. “So I have to ask you,” he said. “For the people who didn’t know, how do you identify today?” 

However, fans will have to wait until the episode airs for the answer. A tongue-tied Isaiah Rashad shook his head before the clip ends.

Isaiah Rashad Thanks His Supporters 

While this is the first time Isaiah Rashad has given an interview, he previously addressed the leak during his performance at Coachella last month. 

“I see all the messages and all that s###, all the positivity,” Rashad said to rapturous applause from the crowd. “Y’all n##### done kept me alive these last couple months.”  

Before coming onstage, he opened his set with a video montage of reactions to the headlines. Joe Budden was among the rappers and media personalities who voiced their opinions. Others who shared their views included N.O.R.E., Akademiks, and fellow rappers The Game and Boosie.   

The voiceover noted the intense backlash online, including those who said they would never listen to his music again. They also reflected on the positive impact despite the naysayers. “The purpose of doing that was to embarrass him. However, it backfired. When his video leaked, his streams and everything went up. He’s up on the charts now.”

Barack Obama Speaks On Texas School Shooting: “Our Country Is Paralyzed”

Barack Obama has spoken in the wake of the mass shooting at a school in Texas, the deadliest US elementary school shooting since Sandy Hook. 

“Across the country, parents are putting their children to bed,” wrote Barack Obama on Twitter. “Reading stories, singing lullabies—and in the back of their minds, they’re worried about what might happen tomorrow after they drop their kids off at school, or take them to a grocery store or any other public space.” 

Barack Obama On Preventing Future Tragedies

He reflected on the decade since Sandy Hook and said the gun lobby is responsible for “paralyzing” the country. 

“Michelle and I grieve with the families in Uvalde, who are experiencing pain no one should have to bear. We’re also angry for them. Nearly ten years after Sandy Hook—and ten days after Buffalo—our country is paralyzed, not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might help prevent these tragedies.” 

Barack Obama echoed the sentiments of President Joe Biden, who spoke on the tragedy from the White House on Tuesday evening (May 24). He also noted the alarming instances of gunfire on school grounds.  

“It’s been 3,448 days — 10 years — since I stood up at… a grade school in Connecticut where another gunman massacred 26 people including 20 first graders at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Since then, there have been over 900 incidents of gunfire reported on school grounds.” 

The shooting is the deadliest at an elementary school since the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut. 26 people, including 20 children between 6 and 7 years old, lost their lives in the 2012 incident.  

CNN reports at least 19 students and two adults were killed during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The gunman, who is dead, has been identified as 18-year-old former Uvalde High School student Salvador Ramos. He reportedly shot his grandmother before heading to the school and is believed to have acted alone. 

Barack Obama called for healing for those affected by the devastating events. “It’s long past time for action, any kind of action. And it’s another tragedy—a quieter but no less tragic one—for families to wait another day. May God bless the memory of the victims, and in the words of Scripture, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds,” he concluded.

Music Group Sentury Is Bringing Back True R&B

For those old enough to remember, the R&B music genre was a staple in the industry in the 80s and 90s. There were many breakout stars during this period who performed beautifully and had an indescribable talent for writing lyrics. However, as time passed, this particular genre began to change. Sentury is an R&B group comprising four members: CJ, Leo, AJ, and Rico. The group made its debut with its hit single, “One More Time,” which peaked at number 28 on Billboard’s Top 100 list. Meek Mill and Michael Rubin’s REFORM Alliance teamed up with Hire! Philly to help Philadelphians get jobs.

The REFORM Alliance and Hire! Philly will host a job fair at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on June 9. Meek Mill and Rubin’s organization previously worked with Roc Nation to hold a similar event at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2021.

“Jobs mean strong families, safe communities, and a healthy economy,” REFORM Alliance CEO Robert Rooks said in a press release. “System-impacted people constitute a ready and willing workforce but face significant barriers to employment. With this job fair, we want to empower people with hope, dignity, confidence, and access to opportunity so that they can thrive.”

Employers will offer full-time positions primarily based in the state of Pennsylvania. Meek Mill and Rubin’s REFORM Alliance will also provide attendees with opportunities to join their organization.

“People need jobs to provide for themselves and support their families,” REFORM Alliance’s Chief Advocacy Officer Jessica Jackson said. “Yet too many Philadelphians are locked out of the economy because of their criminal history or other barriers. This job fair is an opportunity to break down those barriers and help anyone trying to get back on their feet. We have an amazing group of partners, volunteers and employers ready to make this a one-stop shop for a better future.”

Paul Wall Presents Food Truck To Olympic Gold Medalist’s Mom, Gets One Of His Own

Paul Wall received a surprise while presenting a gift to an Olympian’s mother.

Cameron Davies’ Cruising Kitchens donated a $250,000 mobile kitchen to Olympic gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock’s mother Shonda Wells on Saturday (May 21). Paul Wall handed over the keys to Wells before Davies unveiled another food truck for the Houston rapper.

Davies brought out Paul Wall’s Grill, which was built for the People’s Champ under a licensing agreement. The San Antonio-based Cruising Kitchens previously built food trucks for celebrities such as DJ Khaled and Gordon Ramsay.

Cruising Kitchens created a food truck for Mensah-Stock’s mother after learning about the wrestler’s plans during the Olympics. The gold medalist intended to use $30,000 of her prize money to fulfill her mother’s dream of owning a food truck.

Davies was inspired by Mensah-Stock. He decided to donate a $250,000 food truck to the family.

“When I saw the story I knew this was something we could do for her mom, that it would change her life,” he told USA Today.

Paul Wall made his way to Cruising Kitchens over the weekend and presented the gift to Wells. An overjoyed Mensah-Stock hugged him, Davies and others.

“There should be more nice people like [Davies],” Mensah-Stock told USA Today.

Slim Shady announced an expanded edition of the diamond-selling album on Tuesday (May 24). The deluxe version of the LP will drop on Thursday (May 26).

Eminem didn’t reveal what will be included in the expanded edition of the album. The original version of the LP was released in 2002.

The Eminem Show debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It went platinum roughly a month after it dropped and attained its diamond certification in 2011.

Earlier this year, the album received a 12x multi-platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Several tracks from the project, including the singles “Without Me” and “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” earned multi-platinum status as well.

The Eminem Show expanded edition announcement happened a day after he was confirmed to appear on the upcoming Elvis movie’s soundtrack. Slim Shady will be one of several rappers featured on the project.

Eminem collaborated with Goodie Mob’s CeeLo Green on a song for the Elvis soundtrack. A snippet of the track emerged on Monday (May 23).

UPDATE: 18 Children, One Teacher Dead In Mass Shooting At Elementary School

At least 14 children were murdered after an active shooter went into a Texas elementary school with a firearm, killing them all and a teacher. There were numerous other injuries reported at a the crime location.

The incident happened at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, a city with a population of about 16,000. The suspected gunman is an 18-year old high school student from a nearby city. The shooter, reportedly Salvador Ramos is dead, after being killed by law-enforcement that came to the horrific scene.

The shooter entered the school around 11:30 AM on Tuesday with a handgun and also a rifle. There are very few additional details at the moment, but initial reports are saying there is only one gunman.

Ramos was a student at the local high school, Uvalde High. Furthermore, the student reportedly murdered his grandmother with a firearm before going to the school for more carnage.

In a press conference, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said, “He shot and killed, horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students, and killed a teacher.”

The incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings that has claimed numerous lives.

One of the most recent, and most reprehensible tragedies was a shooting in Buffalo, New York which claimed the lives of 10 Black people in a largely African-American area. The killer, an admitted racist and White Supremacist, reportedly drove hours after researching the region for a dense area of Black people.

Verzuz Books Southern Showdown: 8Ball & MJG Vs. UGK In Atlanta

The long-discussed 8Ball & MJG vs. UGK battle is finally coming to Verzuz.

Verzuz announced a matchup between the Southern Hip Hop legends on Monday (May 23). The battle is set to take place in Atlanta on Thursday (May 26).

UGK’s Bun B started campaigning for a Verzuz battle with 8Ball & MJG in 2020. Two years later, the respected rapper got his wish.

8Ball called the Verzuz battle a “family affair” in an Instagram Live session with Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. 8Ball & MJG collaborated with UGK’s Bun B and Pimp C multiple times during their careers.

One of their notable collaborations appeared on 8Ball’s 1998 solo album Lost, which included the aptly titled “Ball & Bun” featuring Bun B. Another noteworthy song was the late Pimp C’s “Bobby & Whitney” featuring 8Ball & MJG from 2006’s Pimpalation LP.

Bun B contributed to 8Ball & MJG’s 2004 album Living Legends and their 2010 effort Ten Toes Down. He also enlisted their help on his solo albums. The duo joined him on the posse cut “You’re Everything” in 2008 and a track titled “Grow Up” in 2018.

The upcoming Verzuz will be available on several platforms, including Instagram. The battle is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. EST.
