Stormzy Discusses One Of His Favorite Jay-Z Lyrics

London-born rapper Stormzy has become one of the most successful stars to emerge from the British Hip Hop scene. With multiple Number Ones on the UK Official Albums Chart, the Grime legend established himself as an A-list act in the United Kingdom.

While joining Tems for an episode of Apple Music 1’s Leading Vibe Radio, Stormzy spoke about how an American Hip Hop legend’s take on ego inspired him. He reflected on Jay-Z’s classic 2017 studio LP titled 4:44.

“There’s a Jay-Z lyric, one of my favorite Jay-Z lyrics. It’s on 4:44 and the first song on that album is called ‘Kill Jay-Z’ where he talks about killing his ego,” recalls Stormzy. “And on the same album, on ‘Bam’, he says, ‘Sometimes you need your ego, gotta remind these fools.'”

The entertainer born Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. continued, “And I feel like that lyric mad resonates with man, both sides of it. Killing your ego. Mad resonates with me. Also, sometimes you need your ego because as much as ego is a hindrance, it’s a reminder of yourself, of who you are. I think that’s important sometimes.”

Both Stormzy & Jay-Z Created Respective Critically-Acclaimed Bodies Of Work

Jay-Z’s 4:44 earned widespread critical praise upon its release. The LP received nominations for Best Rap Album and Album Of The Year at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. 4:44 spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and received Platinum certification from the RIAA.

Stormzy’s own album catalog contains 2017’s Gang Signs & Prayer and 2019’s Heavy Is the Head. The 28-year-old rhymer won the British Album Of The Year honor for Gang Signs & Prayer at the 2018 Brit Awards.

Back in 2019, Stormzy made an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show. He told a story about being in the recording studio with Ed Sheeran and Jay-Z. Apparently, Sheeran’s “Take Me Back To London” with Stormzy nearly featured Jay as well. However, Stormzy admitted to turning down that chance to collaborate with the Roc Nation founder.

The Notorious B.I.G. Hologram Goes On Display In Brooklyn

2022 marks what would have been the year Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace turned 50 years old. Biggie’s family and his hometown of New York City announced multiple celebrations honoring the late Hip Hop artist.

Proto Inc. helped memorialize The Notorious B.I.G. with a hologram of the legendary emcee. Biggie’s longtime friend/Bad Boy Entertainment label head Sean “Diddy” Combs is an advisor for the holoportation company.

“Sean Combs has always been an inspiring pioneer in music and business—constantly changing the game with whatever he does,” David Nussbaum, Chief Executive Officer/Founder of Proto, told Black Enterprise.

The Notorious B.I.G. hologram is now on display at the Brooklyn Chop House restaurant in NYC. Previously, Proto “beamed” Diddy from his Los Angeles home into nationwide nightclubs which allowed real-time interactive conversations with his fans.

The use of holograms depicting prominent music figures is not a new concept. Dr. Dre’s iconic set at the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival famously featured a holographic version of the late Tupac Shakur.

In 2019, the Whitney Houston Estate announced “An Evening With Whitney Houston” global tour with a hologram of the legendary vocalist. The AXR+EXP concert series presented Migos member Offset as one of the “interactive human holograms” for a virtual concert.

As far as the 50th birthday celebrations for The Notorious B.I.G., New Yorkers and visitors to the city attended a special ceremony at the Empire State Building in May. The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts also hosted an orchestral tribute to Christopher Wallace on June 10.

Queen Latifah Talks Partying With 2Pac At A Gay Club

June is LGBT Pride Month in the United States. Last June, award-winning rapper/singer/actress Queen Latifah publicly acknowledged she was in a relationship with Eboni Nichols for the first time.

Queen Latifah was a guest on a recent episode of First We Feast and Complex Media’s Hot Ones. During her appearance on the digital show, the Newark, New Jersey native reflected on attending a gay club with the late Tupac Shakur.

“We toured together, so we went all across the country,” said Queen Latifah about 2Pac. “I was in San Francisco doing a show. It was my first show [for] over $10,000, which was a New Year’s Eve show at this cool gay club in San Francisco. I was like, ‘Yo I’m here.’ He was like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna hook up with you.’ So 2Pac came to the club with me. I was like, ‘Yo, 2Pac is in the building!'”

The Equalizer star added, “They went crazy in there. They [were] like, ‘Take off your clothes!’ He took his shirt off anywhere. We had so much fun. But that was like my brother and he’s the type of person if he loved you, if he was cool with you, he’d lay his life down for you. I miss him and I love him. Good times. And we were probably high.”

Queen Latifah is part of the cast for the new Netflix motion picture Hustle. Additionally, Adam Sandler plays an NBA scout in the Jeremiah Zagar-directed sports drama. Bronx rapper Fat Joe also shows up in the movie as himself.

Previously, Queen Latifah showed off her acting chops in films such as House Party 2, Set It Off, Brown Sugar, Bringing Down the House, and Just Wright. She earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 75th Academy Awards for her role in Chicago.

Latifah appeared alongside Tupac Shakur in the 1992 cult classic Juice. Before his death, 2Pac also acted in 1993’s Poetic Justice and 1994’s Above the Rim. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer posthumously starred in Bullet, Gridlock’d, and Gang Related.

NLE Choppa Clashes With DJ Vlad Over Wanting To Heal Justin Bieber

Pop music superstar Justin Bieber recently announced he had been diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder known as Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Memphis rapper NLE Choppa claims to have a remedy for the Canadian singer.

Over the last several years, NLE Choppa altered his lifestyle to become a vegan. The From Dark to Light mixtape creator also claimed that he was able to cure an unnamed person’s cancer through a plant-based diet. He now wants to treat Bieber.

“I tried to have my label DM Justin Bieber on Instagram. IDK if it was sent out because I don’t run it but can y’all please do me a favor and let him know I have what can help I promise. I just want to help and heal 💯💯🙏🏽,” tweeted NLE Choppa on Saturday.

VladTV published an article about NLE Choppa’s message for Justin Bieber. However, Choppa was not pleased with the outlet’s coverage. The 19-year-old rhymer requested that DJ Vlad stop posting stories about him.

The exchange between NLE Choppa and DJ Vlad also included the “Shotta Flow” performer calling the 48-year-old media personality a “chump ass n####.” Vlad then fired back, “Says the chump who claims he cured cancer.”

After Choppa insisted he was able to find a cure for cancer, Vlad shot back, “You didn’t cure s###. Any actual cure has 3 levels of clinical trials associated with it along with peer reviews of the outcome. You have none of that. All you did was tweet that you cured someone.”

This led to NLE Choppa responding to DJ Vlad by tweeting, “[You’re] a culture vulture. You make money off us and really don’t f### with the people. Police ass.” Vlad replied, “You’re a snake oil salesman. This year you claimed you have herbs that replace Brazilian Butt Lifts and breast implants. Last year you claimed you can cure herpes, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. Fraud ass.”

Skepta Retires From Rapping

Meanwhile, Skepta fans may have a long wait for new music after he announced his retirement with the release of his All In EP last year. He said restricting himself to just rapping is “a waste of a talent,” though he wants to produce albums. “I’d love to produce Rihanna’s album, that would be a dream. I’d probably make Rihanna’s hardest album,” he said during an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra.

Skepta believes “rapping for artists is some sort of therapy,” and he now wants to work with other artists.

“Upcoming and established, young and OG. Skepta on production. It’s that time,” he announced on his IG story. He also plans to curate a woman-only project highlighting the many talented female artists. “And I definitely want to make an all-female album. So many fire female artists, rappers and singers. I gotta make a hard thirteen track female-only album full of classics,” he added.

Kodak Black Claims He Has An Album’s Worth of Songs With Drake

Kodak Black teased a project with Drake after revealing the pair are sitting on enough unreleased music to put out an album.

He made the revelation during a press conference for his “Kodak Black Day” music festival in his hometown of Pompano Beach, Florida.

The Florida native has been busy all 2022. He dropped his fourth-studio album Back For Everything back in February. The project earned Kodak Black his fourth US top-ten album after the project debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. He also featured heavily on Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

“Me and Drake, we got some more music,” Kodak said. “It’s really on whenever bruh might feel like he ready and stuff.”

However, Kodak Black is waiting on the call from Drake. “They be like, ‘Is we gone drop the album? We gon’ do this?’ It’s really on him. We got a lot of songs though,” he added. Check out the clip below.

Kodak Black Day was created to celebrate the rapper and his charitable efforts in the community.

Ray J Shouts Out Kodak Black

Meanwhile, Ray J paid tribute to Kodak Black on his birthday. The artist-turned entrepreneur took to Instagram to share the moment he introduced the rapper to the men responsible for his early release at an event at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago.

He wished Kodak Black a happy birthday in the caption before noting how much he gives back. “People need to know how much you do for the community and all the people who helped along the way. It was important to me to introduce Kodak to the former Police Commissioner of New York and the 45 President. They are the guys who pardoned Kodak and granted clemency for him,” he wrote.

He continued and said Kodak Black “can use his influence,” to help even more people. “Being in the room is important! – I do a lot of behind the scenes work but this one I had to shine light on! We need to show the world more moments like this. I’m happy to be of service. HAPPY BIRTHDAY KING!!” he added

Will Smith Reportedly Planning Major Comeback With “I Am Legend 2”

Will Smith is making a comeback to the big screen following the Oscars controversy in March when he slapped Chris Rock onstage, according to a new report.

The rapper-turned-actor lashed out after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. He received a ten-year ban from The Academy Awards, and some of his upcoming projects were delayed or even canceled. Will Smith has laid pretty low since the incident.

However, Will Smith is reportedly taking control of his career and working on a new film. According to a new report, he is making a self-produced sequel to his 2007 film, “I Am Legend.”

A source told The Sun: “The script is being written mentioning his character and as yet Will remains attached to the project. The concept is still to be signed off by Warner Brothers, but there has been no indication that Will is off the project.”

Furthermore, the insider confirmed that Will Smith is making the movie via his company Westbrook Media. “Obviously he is the producer of the film and his production company is in charge while the development continues. And Will himself is undergoing therapy and taking time away from the limelight,” the source added.

Will Smith Apologizes

Will Smith issued an official statement a few days after the Oscars incident, apologizing for his actions. He admitted his behavior was “unacceptable and inexcusable” and left him “embarrassed.”

While he acknowledged, “Jokes at my expense are a part of the job,” he got upset at the mention of his wife’s alopecia. “A joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” Will Smith added.

Meanwhile, Jada Pinkett-Smith addressed the incident ahead of a Red Table Talk special on alopecia. “My deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile.”

She continued: “The state of the world today, we need them both. And we all actually need one another more than ever.”

Roddy Ricch Calls Out The NYPD During Hot 97 Summer Jam Set After Gun Charges Dropped

Roddy Ricch had a message for the NYPD after he was released from jail on Sunday afternoon (Jun. 12), and charges were dropped following his arrest a day prior in connection with gun charges.

As reported by AllHipHop, the Compton rapper was stopped at a security checkpoint for the Governors Ball Festival in NYC on Saturday. Cops say they found a loaded firearm inside the vehicle he was riding in. They also found nine rounds of ammunition and an extended clip, and Roddy Ricch was arrested along with two other people in the car.

Roddy Ricch, Carlos Collins, 57, and Michael Figueroa were all charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

However, according to a report by New York Daily News, while Figueroa was arraigned on the charges in Queens Criminal Court Sunday, Ricch and Collins’ cases were never docketed. A clerk at the court confirmed that the Compton rapper’s case was dismissed.

Although Roddy Ricch didn’t make it to his set at the Governor’s Ball, he did get to perform his Hot 97 Summer Jam show.

He was reminded that he had “money to get to,” following his release and after freshening up with a shower, took to the Summer Jam Stage.

Trae Tha Truth Beats Defamation Lawsuit Filed By Child’s Mother

A defamation suit filed against Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth by his daughter’s mother has been dropped.

According to documents filed with the Superior Court of Van Nuys, lawyers for Heather Cuevas asked that the lawsuit be dismissed with prejudice. Court papers did not detail whether or not a settlement was reached or if Cuevas dismissed the lawsuit for another reason.

Trae’s attorney, Kenumi T. Maatafale, stated that his client denied “each and every allegation” in Cuevas’ suit.

Trae Tha Truth, whose real name is Frazier Othel Thompson III, was accused of causing emotional distress and civil harassment by Cuevas in her suit filed on February 17th of this year.

“This case arises from a long history of aggressive behavior, physical abuse, emotional abuse and harassment by the father of Ms. Cuevas’ daughter,” the suit reads.

“Thompson’s fans have since threatened Cuevas’ life,” the suit alleged. “While all of his other social media posts get very little engagement, Thompson’s attacks on Cuevas have drawn five to six times the number of responses.”

The allegations sound totally opposite of Trae, the founder of Angel by Nature, a charity aimed at helping the impoverished youth of Texas.

In February, the rapper dropped his mixtape “Truth Season: The United Streets of America, which he dedicated to his daughter.

“I need every parent that’s been through any type of situation to feel that. This is going to be a voice for them,” Trae Tha Truth told AllHipHop.com. “People need to hear. This is a conversation that needs to be had. It’s a hidden conversation when people go through it, but they don’t have the outlet to speak up. Again, I’m not using my outlet to bash nobody. If all fails and everything never went my way, my daughter’s going to know that my daddy fought all he could do for me.”

31 White Nationalists Arrested In Idaho At Pride Event

According to a report from NPR, 31 white nationalists were arrested near a gay pride event in Idaho after police discovered the group assembled in the back of a U-Haul truck, all donned in riot gear.

Male members of the Patriot Front, a white nationalist group founded during the 2017 Charlottesville Riots, were wearing white masks, beige caps, navy blue shirts, and khakis when they were arrested by police near the North Idaho Pride Alliance event.

All of the men were charged with conspiracy to riot, which is a misdemeanor. They are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

Police discovered riot gear, one smoke grenade, shin guards, and shields.

The U-Haul was reported by a passerby, who told police that the group looked like “a little army was loading up into the vehicle” when he saw them in the parking lot of a hotel.

The men in the group came from eleven states, including Washington, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Virginia, Arkansas, Wyoming, and Illinois.

There was only one member of the group that was actually from Idaho.

The Southern Poverty Law Center describes the Patriot Front as a “white nationalist hate group” that calls for the formation of a white ethnic state within the United States.

“The American Identity was something uniquely forged in the struggle that our ancestors waged to survive in this new continent,” the group’s manifesto reads. “To be an American is to realize this identity and take up the national struggle upon one’s shoulders. Not simply by birth is one granted this title but by the degree to which he works and fulfills the potential of his birth.”

Doja Cat May Launch New Career As A Standup Comic

Doja Cat is keen to try her hand at stand-up comedy one day.

The “Say So” hitmaker has established herself as a rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer.

But during an interview for the June/July 2022 issue of ELLE magazine, Doja Cat revealed that comedy is her “hidden passion.”

“My one hidden passion is stand-up,” she shared. “I get nervous just like anyone else, but it feels like it could be a natural, fun thing to do.”

Doja Cat, real name Amala Dlamini, went on to note that she is a big fan of Ziwe Fumudoh’s Showtime variety program.

“Ziwe is so f###### funny and she’s so smart, and I love her so much,” the star continued. “She usually likes to bait people into s###, and it just would be funny to see her bait me.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Doja Cat also confirmed that she wants to give acting a whirl.

“I’d love to act. I’d love to be in movies. That’s a massive want for me,” she said.

Roddy Ricch Arrested On Gun Charges In New York, Governor’s Ball Set Cancelled

Compton rapper Roddy Ricch was arrested on gun charges after going through a security checkpoint for the Governors Ball Festival in NYC this weekend.

A simple tweet from the Governors Ball official Twitter account broke the news.

“Unfortunately Roddy Ricch is no longer performing today,” the official Twitter account for the Governors Ball revealed.

Authorities report that Roddy Ricch, whose real name is Rodrick Moore Jr., and two other people were arrested on four charges of criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a large capacity ammo feeding device, and unlawful possession of that device after the cops searched the vehicle he was riding in.

The fans were shocked not only because another artist wasn’t going to appear in the annual Queens-based festival, but they obviously wanted to know why the “Cooped Up” rapper was going to be a no-show.

Police say that as Roddy Ricch and his entourage made their way through a checkpoint for the festival shortly before his set, they discovered a loaded firearm with nine rounds of ammunition and an extended clip.

Roddy Ricch’s arrest is another headache for Governors Ball organizers, who had to deal with a cancellation from the Migos earlier this week.

The Atlanta rappers’ replacement, Lil Wayne, was tapped as a last-minute headliner, but he bailed as well, telling concert promoters that he wouldn’t make his Friday night set just hours before he was supposed to perform due to “flight disruption.”

No word yet on when Roddy Ricch will appear in court for the four weapons charges.

Artist, DJ, and Producer Will Sass Shares His Journey to Success

Will Sass is a pop artist who has built an impressive resume over the past years. The New York City native made his debut as a professional musician with club and festival appearances at many events over three years ago. Some of his achievements include opening for Bakermat at Noto in 2022, opening the Palm Tree Festival and playing the official after-party for Breakaway Festival in 2021, and opening for Gashi on his pre-Covid tour. Will has also played at some of the biggest college shows at various schools, like UT Austin and the University of Miami. And now, he’s gearing up to release his first original body of work, one he’s been crafting over the past few months.

In a recent interview, Will was asked how he’d risen so fast to the top of the dance and pop scenes. “Being an independent artist, I’ve had to learn and create the fundamentals to self-develop my artist project,” he shared. Will added that to perfect his craft, he’s had to learn the ins and outs of content creation, playing shows, and getting the most out of studio sessions. Despite his best efforts, he knows he can’t do all that independently, so he’s built a team of individuals who’re aligned with his creative vision.
The content of his songs also sets Will apart from other artists.

Lessons about life, heartbreak, and how to move on are some concepts that inspire him to write his songs. The result is music that taps into the soul in a relatable way and resonates with broad audiences. Over the past few months, Will’s talent has attracted lots of attention and led to offers for record deals, but he’s turned them down. His mission is to pave the way for other independent artists and help as many as possible find success.

Jack Harlow Says Criticism Good For His Growth After Massive Success

Jack Harlow is open to criticism about his music.

Following his breakthrough in 2020, the Louisville rapper has cemented his status as one to watch in the entertainment industry with his single “First Class” and Lil Nas X collaboration, “Industry Baby.”

But while Jack Harlow is excited that his music has been so well received around the world, he is also OK with recent feedback that’s been less flattering.

“I’ve been so validated by the world over the last year and just put on a pedestal and loved. To experience a taste of the opposite, I think it’s good for my growth,” the 24-year-old explained to Teen Vogue. “It teaches you not to put too much stock in either because the world is finicky. But I’m proud to say my confidence and my thoughts on my trajectory haven’t been shaken. A lot of it has been a big surprise to me after I caught wind of some of it. I’ve been able to do a good job of stepping away.”

Elsewhere in the discussion, Jack Harlow noted that he had seen a change in his sound since he broke onto the scene.

“Some of my earlier stuff, since I wasn’t in the position that I’m in (now), it was easier to be like, ‘Yeah, slide him his props.’ But once you’re up there, it’s a saltier feeling in your mouth. It’s seasonal, I’m telling you. It’s fashion,” Jack Harlow added.

L.A Rapper MoneyGangVontae Shot And Killed In The Bronx; Cops Seek 5 Suspects

According to a news report from NBC New York, an L.A.-based rapper was shot and killed in a pharmacy in the Bronx after posting pictures of himself on Instagram during his visit to New York.

The 27-year-old, born Avanti Frowner, became the victim of a fatal shooting after being tracked down to Amazing Pharmacy on Tremont Avenue in the Bronx.

He was viciously attacked by four men until one of them pulled out a firearm and shot Frowner three times, killing him.

One of the four assailants snatched MoneyGangVontae’s chain off of his neck before leaving him dying defenseless on the floor of the drugstore.

MoneyGangVontae was rushed to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No motive has been established for the shooting and no arrests have been made.

Frowner has become the latest victim in a string of violent crimes in New York City linked to the drill rap culture.

Last month, Bronx drill rapper DThang Gz was arrested and charged in a 65-count indictment with 33 other alleged gang members.

The gang, known as the River Park Towers gang, named after their River Park Towers neighborhood in the Bronx, were all charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, attempted assault and other violent crimes.

Buzzing St. Louis Rappers Jizzle Buckz & Luh Half Indicted For Running Fentanyl Distribution Ring

St. Louis rappers Jizzle Buckz and Luh Half were among the 14 people indicted for allegedly running a drug ring in the city.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri indicted Davante “Jizzle Buckz” Lindsey, Andre “Luh Half” Pearson and five others on fentanyl-related charges in April.

Seven more defendants, including Edward “Edot” Hopkins, were named in a superseding indictment on Wednesday (June 8).
