Dame Dash Recalls Diddy’s CCNY Stampede Tragedy While Discussing Astroworld Festival

Ten people lost their lives as a result of the catastrophic crowd surge at the 2021 Astroworld Festival. Hundreds of others were also reportedly injured during the Travis Scott-hosted concert.

Local authorities are said to be investigating the incident. Meanwhile, Travis Scott and other organizers are facing multiple lawsuits, including a $10 billion suit filed by Brent Coon & Associates on behalf of 1,547 Astroworld Festival attendees.

The Astroworld Festival disaster is not the first time people were killed by a crowd crush while attending an entertainment event. Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Damon “Dame” Dash recently appeared on Allison Kugel’s Allison Interviews podcast, and he spoke about losing an acquaintance in a similar circumstance.

“This stuff happens. It happened with Puff at the basketball game. I was there. Like seven people died. They got smothered,” recalled Damon Dash. “I’ve seen that happen. I’ve actually lost friends in situations like that. I would hope that it’s not intentional.”

Nine People Died From A Crowd Stampede In 1991

A total of nine people died from a crowd stampede at a celebrity basketball game that took place at the City College of New York (CCNY) on December 28, 1991. Over seven years later, a New York State Court of Claims judge ruled the City University of New York institution was responsible for 50% of the damages.

The judge held the CCNY event’s promoters – Dwight “Heavy D” Myers and a then-largely unknown mogul-on-the-rise named Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs (aka Diddy) – liable for the other 50%. However, the ruling had no legal effect on Heavy D nor Puff Daddy because the Court of Claims only deals with cases against the state.

“I feel sorry. It’s a tragedy and a terrible thing. I wasn’t there. I don’t know the homeboy [Travis Scott]. I can’t blame nobody, but those things have happened. I’ve been a part of those kinds of tragedies,” stated Damon Dash during his interview with Allison Kugel.

He continued, “I’ve seen what it looks like to see people get smothered in the confusion and the chaos that comes with it. I’ve actually been in that atmosphere. I actually know what it feels like to be in that situation. I was in the stands because I got in early, but they all got stuck in the staircase and s###. I lost my friend from school. Her name was Dawn and she died.”

Travis Scott Faces Backlash For Encouraging His Fans To “Rage”

Many critics placed a significant portion of the blame for the Astroworld Festival tragedy on Travis Scott. The Houston-raised rapper faced backlash for continuing his set for a full 40 minutes after officials declared the festival a “mass casualty event” and for attending an after-party at Dave & Buster’s later that evening.

Plus, faultfinders pointed to Travis Scott’s history of encouraging his fans to “rage” at his concerts. Scott was sentenced to one year of court supervision after pleading guilty to reckless conduct charges after his actions at the 2015 Lollapalooza festival.

The JackBoys frontman was also arrested on suspicion of inciting a riot in Arkansas two years later. He eventually took a plea deal for a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge in that case. Other violent crowd surges happened at Travis Scott events in 2017 and 2019 as well.

Remy Ma Announces Plans For An “Epic” Women’s Battle Rap Event

Remy Ma started her musical career as a battle rapper and now she’s giving back to the scene, hosting an “epic” women’s battle rap event.

Remy made the announcement during a recent interview with Threeletterman of “PsaHipHOP.” “I’m putting together something real big for the females,” she said. The “All the Way Up” rapper let slip that the event is something other than a tournament or competition and is set to take place on February, 12 next year.

Remy Ma Is A Battle Rap Fan

Elsewhere during the interview, Remy Ma talked about her relationship with her “little hard-headed sister,” battle rapper Ms. Hustle. She revealed her pride at Hustle’s success and the progress of women’s battle rap in general.

“I’m a fan of a lot of the women in it,” Remy Ma said. “I feel right now for women in Hip-Hop period, it’s a great time. This is the most women at one time to have been successful. Women are some of the highest paid artists right now and I want to be able to see that translate over into battle rap. If I can help facilitate that, then I will.”

As the discussion turned to Remy’s early years, she recalled battling guys older than her for money while she was in high school.

“It’s so crazy to see how far it’s come and it’s a great thing,” the New York native shared. “People don’t understand how hard that is to do. To stand there, to not mess up, to not forget. To be in the moment and just perform. Everything that it encompasses.”

She continued and referred to the disparity between talent and income in the rap game. “I know people that’s amazing. Their pen is unmatched and they never really got to see the money that can come from that talent.” However, she added, “And at the same time, I know so many people that’s f###### trash and they super up.”

Will Remy Ma Make A Return To Battle Rap?

Remy Ma was reminded of her battle on the recently revived “Fight Club” with Jersey City’s Lady Luck back in 2004. Though she won the battle and the $20,000 cash prize, she has no plans to make a return as a battle rapper and believes she is more effective playing a behind-the-scenes role.

“This is me being sincere,” declared Remy. “I totally am up to it. My pen just go, that’s something that I would be able to do. But I also know my strength and my power. I been in the game long enough to know how far my reach is. I would be way more beneficial on the other side in being able to bring people that money than competing with them.”

Ultimately Remy said while she is frequently asked to battle, “I don’t want to try to claim the crown.”

She added, “I’m a boss and that’s how I move now. The old me…I do certain s### to prove points to people. I aint really got nothing to prove to nobody no more.”

Notably, Remy Ma is a long-time supporter of Ultimate Rap League and Queen of the Ring and has appeared at recent events. She and her husband Papoose dropped an exclusive freestyle at the leagues’ joint event, “Kings vs. Queens 2.”

Drake and URL

Remy Ma and her friend Juliette “Juju” Castaneda also pulled up to “Til Death Do Us Part,” the event curated by Drake, URL, and Caffeine.tv. Drake has a longstanding relationship with URL and facilitated their relationship with the streaming platform. Drake revealed plans for the first million dollar battle at the last URL event and announced more is to come.

“Shout out to The Boy,” she said, referring to the Canadian superstar rapper. “I had conversations with him and I think he feels the same way that I feel about it.” Remy Ma said Drake understands the skill, talent, and grind required to be a battle rapper and the role he can play in putting money directly in their pockets. “There’s nothing worse than being famous and broke,” she said.

The Terror Squad member shared one final tidbit on her plans outside of music. Remy and fellow Terror Squad member Fat Joe will be back hosting “The Wendy Williams Show” in January. The duo hosted the show last month while Wendy was on medical leave and will return for “about a week” at the top of the year.

Havoc Says Mobb Deep’s Beef With Jay-Z Made Him “Feel Stupid”

Mobb Deep’s years-long beef with Jay-Z is the stuff of rap folklore. The hostile back and forth mainly consisted of shots being fired at each other on diss tracks and ultimately simmered down.

During a recent appearance on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast, Mobb Deep’s Havoc opened up about the once bitter feud.

He was asked what the energy was like when they ran across Jay-Z. “We never really bumped into Jay,” he replied. “The crazy s### about the beef with Jay is Prodigy said something in a magazine…x, y, z and whatever, whatever. Jay-Z didn’t take it lightly. He came at us. I sent a sub but it wasn’t obvious but Prodigy…”

“Went the whole verse on him,” interjected another guest.

Havoc continued and recalled that though “he came at n##### necks and did the s### with the picture and all of that,” referring to the infamous incident at Summer Jam when Jay-Z pulled out Prodigy’s ballerina picture, their beef ” wasn’t about nothing.”

“So, when the years passed and when finally Mobb Deep and Jay-Z is in the same room walking, it made me feel like I had beef with him and I didn’t have no beef with him,” he explained. “I’d rather have been his ally than to have beef with him. It’s just weird because it wasn’t about nothing but now, I’m in the same room with him and I feel like it’s something but it’s nothing. So that s### just made me feel stupid”

However, Havoc said they have since spoken after Jay-Z reached out to do some business and things are now cool between them.

Watch The Clip From My Expert Opinion Below

Back in 2017, Jay-Z revealed he spoke to Prodigy and said that they were able to mend their relationship before he died.

I had super respect for Prodigy,” Jay said on the Rap Radar podcast. “In order for me to really spar with you, I gotta respect you. I sampled him for my first album, so you know I was aware of him and had respect for him. He and I spoke before he passed; I saw him in the club maybe five years ago. He just came over and we kicked it. It wasn’t about nothing. Just sad, you know? Blessings to his family. Young, young man…”

Meanwhile, Havoc recently linked with fellow New York native, Styles P for the collaborative project, “Wreckage Manner” which they discussed with AllHipHop. The first video from the project, “Dreams 2 Nightmares” was released on December 3.

L.A Reid Suggests Beyoncé & Mariah Carey “Verzuz” Clash; Twitter Explodes

Since the outset of the pandemic and beyond, Verzuz battles kept music lovers across the globe entertained. One thing fans of the celebratory competition like to do is debate their fantasy match-ups. L.A Reid has touted one particular “Ultimate Divas” face-off that has fans in a frenzy.

The legendary record executive sparked a Verzuz debate that has fans of the two superstar singers fiercely clashing on social media. L.A revealed who he thought would be a good match for the show during an appearance on The Real.

Offering up the most epic combination he could fathom, he answered, “It’s Mariah Carey versus Beyoncé!”

He and the hosts pointed to the enormity of such an event due to their huge fanbases, massive catalog of hits, and outstanding legacies.

“Bey’s the queen, right? We know Bey is the queen,” L.A added. “But sometimes Mariah might be slightly underrated for how long her career has lasted, how many hits she has, and she practically owns Christmas.”

Twitter Goes Into Debate Mode

Once the clip began to circulate, fans on social media lost their minds. Twitter users began pitting the talented songstresses’ vocal abilities and accolades against the other.

One user wrote, “The fuhh he say? I love Beyonce and I love Mariah, but Mariah would destroy vocally. If it is dance competition bey would win.”

While another questioned Mariah’s hits outside of her iconic “All I Want For Christmas”.

“But isn’t the point of Verzuz supposed to be based on going hit for hit ? I’m sorry but at some point Ms.Claus gotta play something other thenall I want for Christmas, I get it’s her season RN and all but”

Meanwhile, others debated whether the match was an even one, given their differing eras musically.

“Mariah Carey debuted in 1990 Beyoncé’s solo career started in 2003. Mariah and Beyoncé are not peers.”

https://twitter.com/chicagopress/status/1468355267968520193?s=20

“They are from different gens, not a good match. The only credible match for Mariah would be against Whitney Houston or Celine Dion. Whitney is out for obvious reasons and Celine is not black, but if they waive that technicality I could see Celine entertaining the idea.”

Mariah Carey Underrated?

L.A Reid’s assessment of Mariah as “underrated” puzzled some but made sense to others.

“Since when having 19 #1’s & known as the best selling female artist of all time with 200 million records sold make you underrated ?”

https://twitter.com/noaham101/status/1468361757194346497?s=20

“Too many of y’all are shocked someone called Mariah underrated. Half of y’all not bumping 2/3 of her music and the real gems are there. I’m a die hard MC fan but I can easily see Beyonce winning a verzuz. Beyonce is known for being a hit maker. MC does it for love of the craft.”

However, one of the most popular responses to the thread summed up the situation neatly.

“1. They are not peers 2. Mariah isn’t underrated 3. Neither are ever getting on that platform”

Musical Artist Ceesar | Jack of All Trades

The music industry has evolved these last few years drastically; there have been massive shifts that aren’t necessarily for the worst. Recording artist and respected talent Ceesar entered the music industry at a time of enormous innovation and change. He intends to be part of that revolution paving the way for emerging artists and building a brand that elevates purpose, passion, and people.

As a rising figure in the industry, Ceesar’s work ethic and devotion to excellence have made a profound impression on his career, allowing him to push the envelope and color out of the lines to leverage his music. There’s something to be said about artists who intentionally care for the nuances in their craft––when it comes to committing himself to artist development and strategic planning (most indie artists’ kryptonite), Ceesar is no exception.

On top of this, Ceesar always reminds himself to stay humble and keep a wise outlook, as the spontaneity of great ideas is unpredictable.  If you confine yourself in a creative box, your platform will never grow, and your craft will plateau.

Ceesar’s goals this year are further establishing his brands’ credence, networking with like-minded industry leaders and collabing with other artists in his circle. We can expect to see more of Ceesar in the public eye and media space– it’s undeniable that his swift progress will draw attention. One thing is for sure his star power will keep on growing.

Will Smith, Diddy, Kevin Durant Invest $30 Million Into “Tesla of the High Seas”

What do Will Smith, P Diddy, and Kevin Durant have in common?

The three superstars have all dumped money into a futuristic electric speedboat — and are now a part of what is called the “all-star team of new strategic investors” in a company called Arc.

According to Yahoo! News, the A-Listers, with Andreessen Horowitz, have led this current round of funding.

Smith’s Dreamers VC, Durant’s Thirty Five Ventures, and Combs’ Combs Enterprises will be the investment arms that will take their brands into the marine industry.

Combined, the collective has raised $30,000,000 in funding.

In speaking about their contribution of these superstar investors, the company said in a statement, “Along with being world-class in their respective fields, these individuals bring a wealth of experience in building brands, marketing products, and cultivating strong communities. Together, they’ll help Arc execute faster and amplify our impact.”

The first boat is something to marvel at and is considered a “Tesla of the High Seas” and called the Arc One.

The vehicle is 24 ft tall and has an electric powertrain that is pushing out at 475 hp.

The boat is extraordinary and is said to be able to stay charged between 3 and 5 hours per plug-in. The design could easily be plucked from outer space. Engineers, who were former employees at SpaceX, have worked on the prototype created in an aerospace design.

Interested in copping one for your backyard? The going price for the sleek and high-powered boat is $300,000.

Rising Hip Hop Artist Elevated Shares His Top Accomplishments and Advice

Most devoted musicians know how challenging and unrewarding music can sometimes be. You can invest a huge amount of money and time in the art but only end with a few streams or playing to empty rooms or halls with only a few believing in your talent. This is a brutal and unforgiving experience that every musician may possibly face.

But no matter how tough or competitive the industry is, the most hard-working and resilient artists often end up finding success. Though success might have a different meaning from one person to another, the feeling of accomplishment is usually fulfilling and motivating enough to continue putting in the work.

Rising musician Elevated is one of the artists who knows what success feels like, and he loves to share his accomplishments and advice to motivate other artists. Elevated is a talented singer and producer and the brains behind the thriving Elevated Beats, a music brand known for having some of the “sickest” beats. The Surrey-based record producer, audio engineer, and musician has hit numerous career highlights and successes, including rising to the global music stage.

Elevated rose from uploading beats on YouTube for fun to working and collaborating with some of the top names in the music industry. He has worked with Central Cee, Fredo, Giggs, Jorja Smith, Jay1, Yxng Bane, Ynw Melly, and others. He also has unreleased music with many artists that will be aired in the coming days. Elevated says that working with these artists and musicians ushered him to a whole new level in the industry.

He never forgets the first-ever major project that placed him on the map opening the doors for more significant accomplishments. This was a special project by Octavian, the Spaceman mixtape that received significant traction in the music scene. Most of the beats on the mixtape were made on YouTube, with Octavian emailing him to set up a studio session to work together on even more significant projects. Elevated adds that it’s from that project that he got his current producer tag.

But among the many achievements, Elevated points out his biggest accomplishment as an artist was the opportunity to compose music for the documentary, “The Outsiders “ that Simon Fredrick directed.

“That was big for me because it was outside my comfort zone, and it was a chance to showcase my diversity as a musician. I love what the documentary was about and was honored to be involved, ” explains Elevated.

Elevated advises other aspiring artists to be the best in whatever they do. He challenges them to make music that is true to them and not for the money or fame. Faith Evans Refusing To Pay Stevie J Spousal Support As Divorce War Escalates

After three years, Faith Evans and Stevie J are getting a divorce.

However, the proceedings are not going as smoothly as one might expect. One of the biggest concerns is who is going to pay who alimony.

According to Radar the First Lady of Bad Boy is saying it ain’t gonna be her.

The publication received court documents that the two got married on July 17, 2018, in Las Vegas and were separated on October 19, 2021.

The docs also dropped the bomb when it indicated that Stevie J, one of the stars from “Love & Hip Hop,” is asking his soon-to-be ex-wife for monthly spousal support.

The producer, whose real name is Steven Aaron Jordan, wants the courts to come up with an amount for Faith to pay him to maintain his day-to-day expenses.

He also wants the courts to terminate Evans’ right to collect spousal support from him and be financially responsible for all lawyer fees (hers and his).

Evans believes that Stevie J is bugging and asked that the courts deny his claim.

The multiple GRAMMY Award-winner, in turn, asked for the courts to award her “all property acquired prior to marriage, by gift, inheritance, or devise, and after the date of separation.” It is unclear whether or not the couple had a pre-nuptial agreement before getting hitched.

The judge presiding over their case has not decided who will pay support.

Evans has been unlucky in love. The divorce from Stevie J will be the end of her third marriage. She was married and became the widow of Christopher Wallace, aka The Notorious B.I.G., and remarried Todd Russaw, divorcing him in 2011.

Faith is not letting this get her down. She is still making it happen and was recently unmasked as the Skunk on The Masked Singer.

Kodak Black Reacts To Lil Duval Comparing Him To Kendrick Lamar

Kodak Black doesn’t think it’s off-base to mention his name in the same category as Kendrick Lamar.

After comedian Lil Duval compared the polarizing rapper to Kendrick Lamar lyrically, Kodak Black addressed his social media critics. The Florida native suggested his skills are downplayed due to his behavior.

“I understand it be controversial S### behind me but I’ll appreciate it if y’all just worry bout me Fa my talent & not da other s### on social media !!!” Kodak Black wrote in an Instagram comment. “Thank You.”

On Tuesday morning, Lil Duval set off a debate by claiming Kodak Black and Kendrick Lamar are comparable lyrically.

“Kodak really up there with Kendrick lyrically but y’all don’t wanna hear it tho,” the comedian wrote.

Lil Duval faced a cavalcade of tweets dismissing his opinion, but he stood his ground.

“Most of yall hating on Kodak don’t even listen to him,” he declared. “your opinion don’t even matter.”

Although Lil Duval laughed at people saying he must’ve meant former NBA center Kendrick Perkins, the backlash didn’t stop him from firing back at Kodak Black’s detractors.

“No u trippin,” he told one Twitter user. “Kodak is most definitely spiritually tapped in. That’s what makes him special.”

Lil Duval suggested fans listen to the song “Before I Go” to understand Kodak Black’s talent.

Dr. Dre’s Ex-Wife Claims He’s Spending Over $7 Million A Month

Nicole Young has accused her ex-husband Dr. Dre of spending millions of dollars amid their ongoing legal battle.

According to court documents obtained by Radar Online, Young says Dr. Dre spent over $7 million monthly during the last five months. Young contends the Hip Hop mogul’s living lavishly while she’s down to $1 million with mounting lawyer fees.

“As it stands right now, the only financial resource Nicole has is the spousal support she receives from Andre,” her lawyer wrote. “Whereas Andre has unfettered access to $183 Million in cash accounts, which he unabashedly uses to fund his luxurious lifestyle, including extravagant purchases of fine art (in the last 5 months, he has spent over $7 Million per month).”

Young made the claim about Dr. Dre’s extravagant spending as she seeks to move forward with a trial. The former couple is battling over spousal support and the validity of a prenup agreement.

Although Young admits to signing a prenup before they got married in 1996, she says Dr. Dre tore up the agreement years later. The Aftermath Entertainment founder insists this never happened and wants it enforced.

Dr. Dre requested a stay for the upcoming trial, but Young objected to postponing the proceedings. She argues her ex has a significant advantage if it drags out due to his financial situation.

A judge hasn’t made a ruling on the trial delay at the time of publishing.

Greg Tate, “Godfather Of Hip Hop Journalism,” Passes Away

Acclaimed Hip Hop journalist Greg Tate has died at the age of 64.

A representative for the late writer’s publisher Duke University Press confirmed his passing on Tuesday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Greg Tate was known as the “Godfather of Hip Hop journalism” for his work covering the culture in its early days. He began working for the Village Voice in 1987, playing a vital role in documenting the burgeoning Hip Hop scene when it was often dismissed as a fad.

The gifted wordsmith wrote for outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, Rolling Stone and Essence during his illustrious career. He also published multiple books, including his highly-regarded debut Flyboy in the Buttermilk: Essays on Contemporary America in 1992.

In a 2012 interview with AllHipHop, Greg Tate was asked about the “Godfather of Hip Hop journalism” title given to him by The Source. When reflecting on his impact on the craft, the influential essayist cited his own style.

“Creating a style that fluidly combined critical theory and esoteric spiritual knowledge with a twisted personal take on street musicology,” he said regarding his greatest contribution.

AllHipHop extends our condolences to the friends and family of Greg Tate.
