What Would Martin Luther King Jr. Think About Us Now In The Age Of Hip-Hop?

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. endures as the most recognizable and ubiquitous ideal of peace, love, and symbol for the relentless pursuit of equality. Since his violent, vile, and evil assassination, the course of the world was irrevocably changed.

At first gaze, it seemed like King’s demise put a global spotlight on the most nefarious, and clandestine murderous activities of government and purity of the hatred many had for the Civil Rights icon. In the subsequent years, Black Americans saw strides forward like never before and it felt like a rocket-like trajectory upward.

The “middle class” exploded, opportunities presented themselves and programs like affirmative action benefitted people of all walks regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, and even age. Dr. King, and others like him, were sacrificial lambs that willingly gave their lives – in blood – for the collective. For the future. For us. He knew how the story would end for himself, but that did not deter him, since he likely knew the result would be a better world for all.

In the year 2022, 54 years since his death, we recollect MLK’s legacy once again with thought pieces, TV/internet telecasts and social media posts. There are even streaming media services creating Dr. King playlists to honor his work and legacy.

It is difficult to fathom what the great leader would think of the plight of Black people, Brown people, and the downtrodden in the present day. The first thought is that he would be disappointed in us as a nation in general, and specifically as Black people. After all, he wrote a book in 1967 that asked the ultimate question: “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?”

We are in the midst of one of the most confusing, unregulated, and tumultuous periods in recorded history. The plight is amplified by modern media, social platforms, and old-fashioned word of mouth. It is overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time. Overwhelming because, unlike King in the late 1960s, hope seems to be fleeting. Underwhelming because people seem to lack the same passion for change, embracing instant gratification instead. Personally, I thought Black people would have overcome by now.

King is hopeful in “Where Do We Go From Here.”

Yet, here are some stats that would upset Dr. King.

  • The overall poverty rate as of 2020 was up 11.4 percent, one 1.0 percentage point from 10.5 percent in 2019. Before 2020, it was on the decline. For perspective, that single percent means 3.3 million more people were classified as impoverish than the previous year.
  • There are more nuance stats according to the CDC. For example, the poverty rate for a female-led household increased from 22.2 percent to 23.4 percent.
  • The American median household income was $67,521 in 2020, a decrease, but the median income for African Americans remained the same, according to the report.
  • Income for full-time, year-round workers went up 6.9 percent from 2019 numbers, $61,417 for me and $50,982 for women respectively.

In King’s day, our parents, grands and great grands day, they insisted on better jobs, higher wages, equality in education, fairness in housing and the sweeping, and an unencumbered right to vote made official through the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And King effectively saw a massive gain with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Anyway, stats and numbers don’t tell the whole story. How we feel matters as well. Here’s what some of my friends and associates said in a Facebook post when I queried them.

“I think he’d be angry and ashamed of the bastardization of his life’s work. The reduction of his words to respectability used only to pacify the urgent protests of our time.” Ronnette Cox

“Please include that we dance a lot on social media platforms, Chuck Creekmur.”

“He’d muse on the passing of his brother Sidney Poitier and ruminate how thin-skinned and shallow the artist today are. He’d probably say, ‘Although I don’t listen to rap music as a practice, I’m reminded of Judge Elam’s son Keith and Gang Starr Who’s Gonna Take The Weight?'”

“We’d be somewhere else today were he still with us. His activism evolved to take a stand against the Vietnam war, poverty, and colonialism. His leadership would have inspired so many others who look to his evolution as a model for social justice and humanitarian work.”

“I think he would be embarrassed and offended by most of the music. His teachers were. C Delores Tucker tried to tell us.

“He would regret that his true legacy, that of the Poor People’s Campaign, which was to create an economic Bill of Rights and join together various communities (Black, Native, Hispanic, and most interestingly, poor whites), not only didn’t happen, but that it was the thing that got him killed.”

“He’d be disappointed that we have allowed our music to be weaponized against us without any checks or balances.”

I cannot help, but think that we have allowed the torch once carried by King to die out, and yet, there are numerous flickers of hope around us. Remember King said: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

As far as Hip-Hop is concerned, we see King’s dream alive and well. T.I., for example, has established US OR ELSE, “a social justice-focused non-profit charity organization that advocates for the liberation of Black people and all other oppressed people.” Jay-Z founded REFORM, which fights for “the justice and dignity of people who are needlessly trapped in the criminal justice system.” There’s the Justice League NYC, backed by Carmen Perez and the legendary Harry Belafonte. There are many others too working, like Immortal Technique, Jasiri X, and more.

Numerous artists in both the mainstream and the underground have grown before our eyes in real-time. Think about Lil Baby when we first saw him, quite possibly on drugs, to where we saw him last, on stage with Kirk Franklin. He has evolved into a leader. OGs Killer Mike, Master P, and Vinnie Brown from Naughty By Nature have movements in banking to level the playing field in lending and access to capital.

In education, where we must reaffirm and reclaim our power, Dame Dash and Principal Akbar Cook have come together to inspire and empower our young people all over the nation. Brother Akbar has a bank, a salon, a laundry mat, a recording studio, an urban farm, and more in his New Jersey high school.

We even have the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA) and the NFAC. So, nowadays just about everything is different and revolution has different textures, hues, and complexities.

We strive but are we perfect? No. Was Dr. King perfect? No. We now know that a suit, tie, education, and good manners do not ensure that we’ll be respected. Or safe. So, respectability politics be damned. Whether we realize it or not, even his critics and haters benefitted from his undying legacy of transformation.

Also, it would be irresponsible not to mention the enemy. We face an enemy that has morphed as much as we have since the 1960s – if not more. And, their mission remains as diametrically opposed to us as it was when that bullet robbed us of Dr. King. Moreover, it is imperative that we prepare for the enemy in a way that ensures victory. For that to happen, we’ll have to study the total works of Dr. King and others, not just one-liners like “I have a dream.” We will need to employ new thinking and resources that align with the ultimate goal: Freedom.

The culture NOW still needs to speak up for what we deserve and what we are owed like the griots of old. We cannot wait. We must BE the change that we desire and embody our destiny. King would not co-sign the violence, drug dealing, gratuitous sex like he would not approve of the wealth gap. But he would also know the bigger picture by now. And so should we.

In short, King would say to our generation, “Do not give up, but continue to fight.” He would not be silent and he would not be passive and neither should we. His family has told us “no celebration without legislation.

So, what am I doing?

I have taken the helm of Raising Kings, a Delaware-based program that I have been a part of for 10 years. Under Chandra Pitts, RK has consistently been active in the state and the surrounding areas as have other programs like Girls Can Do Anything! and Around the World in a Summer.

Raising Kings is a collaborative commitment to change the image and expectations of African American males by elevating the level of positive male engagement in the lives of boys. It seeks to build capacity among Men and Boys of Color by leveraging the community’s existing assets, resources and connections.

Raising Kings creates a platform to redefine success and teach healthy manhood through exposure and education. With a strength-based approach, this initiative interrupts the generational crisis of failure to create a counter-culture of fortitude, greatness, cultural awareness and self respect.

Going forward, we are re-committed to raising the next generation of leaders with ancestral guides like Martin, Malcolm, Rosa, Harriet, Medgar, Coretta and so many more employing progressive tactics. And we’ll do it without shame or fear.

Have Grace.

Have Patience.

Embrace The Chaos.

Keep Fighting.

Let’s Go.

Cardi B Prepares For Second Week Of Battle With “Demon” Tasha K

Cardi B is preparing for a second week of courtroom action against her nemesis, vlogger Tasha K.

The rapper, real name Belcalis Almanzar, filed her lawsuit against Tasha K in 2019, claiming she defamed her in dozens of videos.

The YouTuber alleged Cardi had been a prostitute and had a sexually transmitted disease, among other allegations.

Kebe testified earlier in the week, per Law360, and told the court that she broadcast lies about the Up hitmaker to make money for her business.

Last week Cardi B claimed she felt ‘extremely suicidal’ over YouTuber’s allegations during the libel trial.

Cardi B confessed the YouTuber’s claims against her made her feel “extremely suicidal.”

Taking to the witness stand in Atlanta, Georgia, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper told her legal team how the rumors spread byTasha K, impacted her mental health.

“I felt extremely suicidal,” the 29-year-old hitmaker said, reports Billboard.

The Grammy winner added that she felt “helpless” against the claims, as Kebe had nearly one million subscribers to her celebrity news-focused channel.

The “WAP” rapper insisted that she had never experienced suicide ideation before, citing her previous experiences with poverty, homelessness, and physical abuse.

She alleged the rumors caused her to experience fatigue, weight loss, and migraines.

“I felt defeated and depressed and I didn’t want to sleep with my husband (Offset),” she said in court, according to TMZ, adding that she felt like “I didn’t deserve my kid.”

When her lawyer asked what she thought about the blogger after seeing the rumors, she said, “I felt like only a demon could do that s###,” before apologizing for her language.

The trial began last Monday and is expected to wrap up sometime this week.

Janet Jackson Vows Not To Overdo It With Cosmetic Procedures

Janet Jackson has vowed to go easy on cosmetic procedures as she ages.

The “Together Again” hitmaker, who is known for her flawless complexion and razor-sharp cheekbones, has never discussed whether she has had fillers or Botox.

But in an interview with Allure magazine, Janet shared that she plans on aging “gracefully” but is open to a little help

“Everyone would always want to stay young and this and that but it’s inevitable. I mean, we’re all going to get there,” she told the publication.

“There’s another road. It’s a little bit of zhuzh. I don’t know when my day is coming, but at some point, it’s going to come and I can choose which path I want to take. I do hope I age gracefully. It’s either a little bit of zhuzh or gracefully.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Janet reflected on the shift she experienced in terms of body image around the time she released her self-titled fifth studio album in 1993.

After dressing modestly for many years, the star finally felt comfortable in her skin.

“Trying to feel comfortable in embracing that. Throwing myself in the lion’s den. Just going for it, wanting to do something different,” Janet continued. “It was something very tough, very difficult. But I’m glad I walked through it. I’m really glad I got in. It was a way of accepting and loving, accepting yourself and your body.”

Snoop Dogg Launching A Hot Dog Business

Snoop Dogg has set his sights on starting his own hot dog business.

Billboard reported that the rapper’s legal team filed documents to trademark a frankfurter company called Snoop Doggs back in December.

While the filing revealed that Snoop plans to sell “hot dogs and other types of sausage” under the brand name, no other details were shared.

Representatives for Snoop have not yet commented on the report.

The 50-year-old is no stranger to the culinary world, having released his cookbook, “From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen” in 2018, and appeared in a string of cooking show segments alongside his pal Martha Stewart.

However, his planned venture might be surprising to some, as during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2016 he vowed never to eat another hot dog after seeing how the snack is made in a factory.

“This is a hot dog!? Oh cuz, I ain’t never eating a motherf**king hot dog! If that’s how they make hot dogs, I don’t want one. I’m good,” he exclaimed.

Drake’s Involvement With “Euphoria” Amazes Castmembers

Storm Reid was impressed by Drake’s involvement at Euphoria table read

Storm Reid was impressed by how involved Drake was during one of the table reads for her TV show “Euphoria.”

The “Hotline Bling” hitmaker serves as an executive producer on the HBO drama, which follows a group of young adults as they navigate issues like social media, sex, money, and drugs.

Reid, who plays Zendaya’s on-screen sister in the series, admitted on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that she didn’t expect Drake to be as hands-on with the program’s development as he is.

“He’s really involved. We were doing table reads for season two a couple of months back, and of course, like you’re not expecting Drake to be at your table read,” she recalled. “I pull up to the lot and he’s there with all of his homies, it’s him and then his business partner, Future the Prince, and they literally sat through, I think it was a three-hour table read ’cause we went through a couple of episodes.

“He was so involved and so in tune and you don’t really expect that from a person. I know that he’s a brilliant businessman and creative, but I mean he’s Drake, he doesn’t really have to pay attention in the table read and he did. He did come from acting, so it makes sense.”

The “Wrinkle in Time” actress watched Drake, who started his career in “Degrassi: The Next Generation”, at the session to make sure he was reading along with everybody.

“I was kind of looking at him to see if he was actually paying attention and turning his pages, and you could tell he was feeling all the emotion,” she added.

“Euphoria,” which also stars Hunter Schafer and Sydney Sweeney, airs every Sunday on HBO.

One fan speculated about a rumor relating to the couple’s relationship in the comments, writing, “But yet you still want an open relationship smh (shaking my head) If I were him you woulda been sent to the streets already.”

Curry responded to the trolling by defending her marriage.

“Don’t believe everything you read. Do you know how ridiculous that is?” she replied. “Don’t disrespect my marriage like that. Please and thank you.”

Ayesha and Stephen have been married for 10 years and share three children – Riley, nine, Ryan, six, and Canon, three.

Letitia Wright Resumes Filming “Black Panther” Sequel Following Injury

Letitia Wright has resumed filming “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” after recovering from an on-set injury.

The actress, who is reprising the role of Shuri in the sequel, was hospitalized in August after an “incident with a stunt rig” while filming a sequence in Boston.

At the time, it was reported that she had “sustained minor injuries” and the accident would not affect the shooting schedule.

However, her injuries turned out to be “much more serious”, so the production was suspended from November to January to give her more time to recover.

Representatives for Wright and Marvel’s parent company Disney confirmed on Friday that the 28-year-old star had recovered from the incident and was back on set.

Her spokesperson told BBC News, “Filming resumed this month as planned and we’re on schedule.”

In November, Marvel Studios executives Kevin Feige, Nate Moore, and Louis D’Esposito sent a note to the cast and crew of the sequel to explain the hiatus and reveal the extent of Wright’s injuries.

“What we had initially thought were minor injuries turned out to be much more serious with Letitia suffering a critical shoulder fracture and a concussion with severe side effects. It has been a painful process and Letitia has been home recovering with her doctors and the support of family,” they wrote in the note, obtained by Deadline.

“We also want to thank Letitia for everything she’s doing to get back to the set – we know how much she loves this role, how tough it’s been for her to be away, and how hard she’s working to recover as quickly as she safely can. We are eagerly awaiting her return and we know we will all come back stronger together.”

Shuri is believed to have a more prominent role in the sequel following the death of lead actor Chadwick Boseman, whose character has not been recast.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to hit cinemas in November.

ReyTheGreat is One of South Florida’s Most Talented Artist

ReyThegreat is a young superstar rap artist from South Florida. Bursting out on the scene Reythegreat currently has a song on YouTube “don’t play” with 47k views. He’s also collaborated with Sosa Geek on “be chatting” which is also out on YouTube currently at about 78k views. As an independent artist, Reythegreat takes great pride in his craft.
Reythegreat also has a project by the name of “forever ballin” in the works and is set to be released in April 22, 2022.

Reythegreat is an all-around talent he really can do it all, he explained to me he makes music off his emotions. So that’s the reason why you hear so many different styles and sounds from him. He explained to me today he might be sad, mad, depressed, or happy and however he is feeling that is how the song will come out.

Keeping it real with his fans in his music is something he describes that he takes great passion in. He would never want to guide anyone to the wrong direction in life and takes great responsibility for all of the lyrics in his music. His childhood and upbringing were not the easiest and were not the worst. As a child, Rey had to deal with his father and mother separating and actually watching his mother take him and his sister to a homeless shelter. His mother eventually found a job and was able to make Reynaldo’s situation much better.

In 2004 Reynaldo moved to liberty city Florida where he was introduced to a lot of different things as a child, he explains liberty city at the time was dangerous and reckless. As a fourth-grader, he would go to Winn-dixxe bag grocery and help people take their groceries to their car to make a few bucks at the time. Also would go to the bp not too far from his house to pump people’s gas and try to have his own money therefore he wouldn’t have to ask his mom for money.

Rey told a story one week where he was hustling hard every day after school and wouldn’t go home until he made 25 bucks per day, he was saving for the black and gold LeBron 3’s in 2004. His mother needed help and asked Reynaldo if he could Lend her money and he gave his mother all the money, never being able to buy the Lebron’s. Another story he told me that stood out was one day he and his cousins Kidkid were walking to the gas station to inflate air into their bike tire. When they walked past a house where a bunch of people were outside and spotted them and chased them both with guns. Luckily the guys were only interested in taking the bikes.

Former NYPD Sergeant, That Was A Drug Mule For The Nine Trey Bloods When 6ix9ine Was Down, Gets Light Sentence

The ex-NYPD cop who lost her job after being a drug mule for Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, around the time that 6ix9ine was affiliated with the gang, is smiling after her Thursday, Jan. 13 court case.

From 2017 to 2018, she played both sides of the fence. As a sergeant assigned to 22 housing projects in the Brooklyn sections of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, and in the downtown area, she played the street life as hard as she played the law enforcement side.

According to the NY Daily News, a Manhattan Federal Court Judge, Alvin Hellerstein, sentenced Arlicia Robinson, the former sergeant, to a four-year supervised release on probation for her participation in transportation 100 grams of heroin for the gang from the Bronx to Manhattan on July 25, 2018.

This lenient sentencing deeply impacted the 41-year-old single mother of three.

Through a virtual stream, Robinson said in court, “I know now and I always will that what I did was wrong. I take full responsibility for my poor decision-making and behavior. I was not thinking clearly and was not thinking straight.”

She spoke about her connection to the multi-colored-haired rapper’s crew. She confessed to being the girlfriend of two Nine Trey members: Kristian Cruz, a “five-star general” and Aaron “Bat” Young.

Cruz sold between $2 million to $3 million in heroin and fentanyl when he was active and Young, who is now locked up, was sentenced to 20 years for his role inside of the New York fragment of the gang that originated on the West Coast in the late 70s and 80s.

Robinson lied for her old boo to a grand jury. Before 2018, she saw him shot by a rival drug dealer but did not testify to that.

Her lawyer, Justine Harris asked the judge to consider Robinson’s traumatic upbringing as a reason why she was so easily attracted to the gang life.

She said, “Both her parents died when she was 7. She was raised by a series of different loving family members but very unstable home situations. She was a victim as a child of repeated sexual abuse and assault between the ages of 9 and 13.”

The judge commented, “All of us have an inner turmoil that can prevent correct decision-making. And sometimes, that inner turmoil rises to such a degree because of the deprivations of life and childhood and abuse and the like that robs an individual of being able to make an autonomous decision. It’s very hard to find a condition of life more difficult than the conditions Ms. Robinson went through.”

“One of the purposes of punishment is to rehabilitate a person,” he said. “You’ve shown, Ms. Robinson, your own rehabilitation — even before your punishment — by choosing a life of helping others and supporting your family and your children. And making yourself clean and strong to do those things is highly commendable.”

Cordae Drops New Song With Eminem, Rap God Shouts Out Murda Mook And Tsu Surf

Rapper Cordae drops his new album From a Bird’s Eye View and everyone is going bonkers at how fire it is. It’s no surprise that the lead single, “Parable (Remix)” featuring Eminem is a driving force bringing attention to the project.

Cordae is one the best emcees of his generation and is one of few (in any generation) that can honestly hold their own on a track with the rap god.

He spits in his second verse a declaration of where he is in life at this moment.

“First and foremost, for every door that’s opened, a door close/ Beat a n####, take his Bordeauxs, upgrade my wardrobe/ And Lord knows livin’ like this, it leads a short road/ A dead-end, or prison time, where we was headin’/
Instead, when I got bread, broke it with brethren/ Eyes open, leave the house, move like a veteran/ Made a couple of dollars from come-ups, my n##### flexin’/ N#### got a problem, then I can make some corrections/ Okay, cool, still with the same n##### since grade school/ Give a f### about your Shade Room when I had made room”

His measure flow sinks in the track like heated butter, while Em’s rapid-fire chops the beat like a Hibachi chef. The Detroit native takes shots at The Source magazine, Tekashi 69 and name drops to battle rap gods.

“I done seen some s### within my lifetime, at one time, I/ Can still remember just how bad I used to want ‘5 mics’/ My biggest dream was just to make it into Unsigned Hype/ It’s so hard for me to fathom this was once my life/ S###’ll make you wanna cop-out like a plea deal/ So, I treat a beat like it’s Tekashi, spit on that b#### like Meek Mill/ My addiction got me weak-willed/ I’m relapsing, I think I can’t seem to stop eating Beat Pills/ And Doctor D-R-E, he still keeps on giving me refills.”

He references his infamous feud with the “Bible of Hip-Hop,” dating back to earlier in their career, the Tekashi/ Meek Mill beef, drops a plug for his guy’s electronic company and lets us know that Dre is still making him joints.

Always in tune with the culture, he references his children’s generation and pays homage to the rap playing field of his origins.

“That every single word’ll be true so without further adieu/ It’s return of the ruthless more murderous than Mook is so what you’re gonna do’s think I’m/ Allergic when I point this mother###kin burer at ‘chu/ I throw shade it’ll be curtains for you/ Pray for the verse to get through/ birth of a new/ Worser me who’s determined to do/ Permanent damage with the words that I threw, bird’s-eye view, I referred to as Zeus (Tsu Surf)/ Circlin’ you like I’m a vulture features are tournaments, I turn ’em into”

The Wave from Jersey heard the sub shout out on his birthday and posted it on his social media.

Not a bad present for ya, B-Day. A shout-out from Marshall Mathers on Cordae’s sophomore full-project that has the potential of being the best album of the year.

Rapper Fat Trel Looks To Donald Trump, Jay-Z, Meek Mill, Kim Kardashian To Get Him Out Of Prison

Rapper Fat Trel hopes a consortium of celebrity can help him get out of prison.

The rapper, who is presently incarcerated, requested that Donald J. Trump, Meek Mill, Kim Kardashian, and others like Jay Z‘s Reform Organization to help him in his plight.

The rapper wrote an open letter in an effort to highlight the issue he is facing and tagged the various celebs and some media outlets as well. Last month, he was arrested for Revocation of Suspended Sentence and Probation, which was connected to an arrest in 2018. He subsequently was sentenced to a year and a half year in prison. The D.C. rapper wrote about his battle, one that is reminiscenet of Meek Mill’s bout in Pennsylvania.

“It is with heaviness in my heart that I must inform my fans and supporters that the justice system has failed in being objective in my case,” he said in a social media post.

The rapper charges he spent three years in prison after being convicted of DWI and marijuana possession from 2016, and then he got probation. Last month, he had a probation hearing in Arlington County jail and was then sentenced to another year and a half incarceration by a judge.

He also brought up that the laws around recreational marijuana have changed in Virginia since his origin case.

The IG post has gotten over 12,000 with a number of celebrities supporting his release.
