It has been an up-and-down 2021 for José Álvaro Osorio Balvín. The Colombian singer/rapper, better known as J Balvin, garnered both praise and condemnation over the last twelve months.
J Balvin’s latest award show victory also sparked positive and negative reactions. This weekend, the African Entertainment Awards named the José album creator as the Afro-Latino Artist of the Year for 2021.
In response, J Balvin began trending on Twitter as some social media users took issue with him receiving the honor. Many of the complaints centered around the question of Balvin’s race and ethnicity.

Some people also pointed out J Balvin faced backlash earlier this year for his controversial “Perra” music video. Critics accused the Reggaeton recording artist of racism and misogyny because the visuals depicted Black women as dogs on leashes.
J Balvin removed the “Perra” video from YouTube. The “I Like It” hitmaker also apologized by stating, “I want to say sorry to whomever felt offended, especially to the Black community. That’s not who I am. I’m about tolerance, love, and inclusivity.”

M24 has been released from prison after serving three months for knife possession. The drill rapper from Brixton, South London was given a six-month sentence but served only half of his time.
He uploaded a series of posts showing him resuming his normal life in the days since his release. M24 captioned one “Straight Back Home” as he displayed a tray of glittering ice while sporting a bejeweled grill.
M24 quickly got back to business and dropped a fresh new freestyle. He raps about his time behind bars, “Jail is a f#####-up place, I don’t wish that on no one,” and his plans now he’s a free man.
The South Londoner was a passenger in a vehicle when he was arrested in September. The car was stopped and searched by police in East London and M24 was found to be in possession of a knife. In addition to a sentence of six months imprisonment, he was reportedly handed a “Knife Crime Prevention Order.” This means M24 is subject to a curfew and restrictions on the company he is allowed to keep and the areas he is allowed within.
M24 Shares His Hopes For Worldwide Success
The rapper began his music career as part of the “150” crew, but it was his breakout hit “We Don’t Dance” which launched his solo success. M24 spoke to GRM Daily about his Hip-Hop influences before his arrest.
“I wouldn’t specifically said I’m going to do drill music,” he explained. “I just started making music around the life I live and my life experiences… so the category that it fit in was drill… And I believe I was influenced through the music background that my family has, also the music I used to listen to when i was young… I believe that all had a part to play”.
Furthermore, M24 has big aspirations and wants to help kids who can relate to his story. “In terms of what I would like to achieve, I want to become a worldwide artist… I want to inspire people with similar backgrounds to me, to kinda show them that anything is possible.”
R&B performer Omarion has been the butt of a lot of jokes lately. The B2K founding member’s name sounding somewhat similar to the COVID-19 Omicron variant is enough to even make him the target of actor LaKeith Stanfield.
Yesterday, LaKeith Stanfield shared a screenshot of an Instagram direct message he sent to Omarion. The DM was a tongue-in-cheek jab at the 37-year-old “Ice Box” singer.
“[You’re] ruining Christmas for everybody smh,” wrote LaKeith Stanfield about Omarion. In the caption, Stanfield added, “I’m weak I wonder if he’s gonna respond.”
It’s not clear if Omarion actually responded to LaKeith Stanfield in the DMs, but the Grammy-nominated vocalist has addressed the Internet’s obsession with tying him to the Omicron variant. He posted his own message on IG last week.

Congratulations are in order after G Herbo announced that he and fiancé Taina Williams are expecting their second child together.
The pair jointly shared a touching video featuring footage of the couple, including the moment Taina revealed the news to G Herbo. The Canadian superstar was spotted giving back in his hometown of Toronto on Christmas Day. With a Maybach instead of a reindeer-led sleigh, Drake played Santa Claus handing out stacks of cash to passers-by.
A video has emerged showing ChampagnePapi seated in the back of his chauffeur-driven luxury vehicle, handing over a wad of Canadian 20-dollar bills.

Frank Ocean shared a special gift with his fans on Christmas Day, returning with the first episode of his Apple Music show, “Blonded Radio” since 2019. Furthermore, he treated listeners to almost nine minutes of new music, including words from Wim “The Iceman” Hof, a Dutch motivational speaker and athlete.
The “Dear April” singer explained via his Instagram Story how he was inspired by Wim during a time of grief. Frank Ocean lost his younger brother Ryan Moore (also known as Ryan Breaux) to a fatal car crash in August 2020.
“Me and (Wim Hof) had a conversation some time ago when I was in the earlier stages of grief,” he said. “And I remember marveling afterwards at how his energy blasted through the phone. So much vim in this Wim.”

During a recent appearance on VladTV, Boosie was asked his opinion of R. Kelly’s sex trafficking and racketeering conviction. The rapper seemed to suggest something was amiss, alluding to R. Kelly being a rich Black man charged with similar offenses for a second time. He also suggested the singer failed to get a fair trial claiming, “He was guilty before he walked in the courtroom.”
“This is how I feel about that: Everything was pushed to another level. I just feel like R. Kelly like the young b*tches,” said Boosie.
According to Boosie, R. Kelly’s wrongdoing came from liking underage girls rather than any mistreatment of them. “All that s###, seducing and kidnapping and all this s### in somebody house, if you leave a b#### at the house and you go on tour for two weeks and she don’t go nowhere, that b#### ain’t been kidnapped. In an interview with playwright Jeremy O. Harris for i-D magazine, he told the Skims founder he’d heard she sent letters to everyone on the show.
“Oh, my God. I did,” she replied. “I wrote letters to everybody. I was like, ‘I want to leave a note for everyone on their desk, so that they just know that I appreciate them for making me feel so welcome.'”
The 41-year-old said she was “amazed” by the hours and amount of work the staff have to put in every week to achieve a show each Saturday.
“It’s crazy. One day we worked twenty-three hours, it was insane,” she shared. “And literally, you don’t even get a lunch break. You eat as you go. My whole team, the glam team, everyone, we were up, we were doing all of our pre-taped skits. The amount of respect that I have for these people that worked so hard, is just insane. It was so crazy. But the best experience. I had so much fun.”
Kim had been asked to host the show in the past but she turned it down because she was too nervous.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t do it. I can’t do it. I don’t have it in me.’ This time felt like the right time. And once I commit, I commit. I actually wasn’t nervous at all. I had such a good time,” she added.
So it is no surprise he went all out for his family over the Christmas holiday.

Troubled rapper Rich the Kid is back in the news for allegedly cheating people. Another landlord has filed a lawsuit saying that he owes them back rent.
According to reports the “Plug the Walk” rapper is being sued by his Manhattan landlord East Village 14 Owner LLC.
In the lawsuit, his landlord says that he lived in their East Village residence for 14 months and stopped paying in August.
The brother of the late rapper, Drakeo the Ruler, took to social media to give a tribute to his sibling.

Dr. Luke is responsible for many of her hits, including “Kiss Me More” (with SZA) and radio staple “Say So.” He has worked with hitmakers such as KE$HA and Saweetie, who have stated that they will not be working with him again.
While KE$HA stopped working with Dr. Luke because she claimed he sexually harassed her. Doja Cat said she was done with the producer/songwriter because he took credit for work he did not actually do.

Ciara and Russell Wilson surprise students with holiday gifts
Ciara and Russell Wilson recently surprised students with gifts to celebrate the holidays.
Just in time for Christmas, the 36-year-old singer and American footballer, 33, dropped by their Why Not You Academy in Des Moines, Washington.
The surprise was to celebrate the school’s inaugural semester. Gift packs included a Dare to Roam antimicrobial backpack filled with goodies including a Starbucks gift card, a Human Nation beanie, a Human Nation/House of LRC T-shirt, a 3BRAND Why Not You Scarf, and a Spin Master’s Aerobie Sonic Fin Football.
The school also used the occasion to unveil their official mascot, a lion, after a vote was put to students.
Last October, the couple donated $1.75 million via Wilson’s Why Not You Foundation to save the institution, then named the Cascade Midway Academy. The school was renamed in honour of the donation.
“We’ve always held the belief that life’s successes start with a good education, but recognize that access isn’t always created equally for all,” Wilson and Ciara said in a statement posted on the foundation’s website.
The theme for the shower was holiday-appropriate and perfectly titled for Atlanta’s Snowman.
Decked out in white, silver, and pastel shades of blue for the Baby SNO Shower, the Jenkins’ home was transformed into a complete Winter Wonderland.
The mommy-to-be was dolled up in an all-white floor-length dress and posted a video re-cap of the bash, captioning, “How am I falling in love again…but this time with someone I’ve never met? Baby J isn’t even here yet- yet bringing together our friends and family in a way only God can do.”

AllHipHop: So good to see you. Now, of course, Matrix is such an iconic film, but how much convincing did it take for you guys to rejoin, and what made you both say yes?
Carrie-Anne Moss: Zero. Convincing zero, zero convincing. After the shock wore off at the thought that we’re doing this again, it was just nothing but a yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Keanu Reeves: Same for me. It was just, yes, there was a yes, and then, what are we doing?
AllHipHop: Right. Now, in the film, it sort of pokes onto this idea that this film would’ve been made, regardless if you guys were involved. So I have to note that, because you both are involved in reprising your role of Neo, and of course, Trinity, did you get any input or allowances in being able to cultivate the character this time around?
Keanu Reeves: The director is really collaborative in terms of the emotions and trying to understand what the character is saying, what the character is doing, but I don’t know about making any substantial changes or additions to it.
Carrie-Anne Moss: For me, I feel like I become of service to her vision, and my goal and my desire is to fulfill what her vision of the character, of the movie, and it’s quite lovely to sort of trust the filmmaker that much, and you really can do that with her.
AllHipHop: Absolutely. Now, obviously first time around, these were new characters, we’re getting to know them. This time around, they have history. So what personal connections did you make this time around to both Neo and Trinity, and was there anything that you took from your real life and added to the character? Carrie-Ann, obviously the mother thing, I think, was one substantial thing. I was like, oh, Trinity’s a mom.
Carrie-Anne Moss: That was interesting to kind of embrace that and embrace that whole questioning of that, and how she was in her matrix. That was pretty interesting.
AllHipHop: And any personal connections you made to your character, and what your experiences have been coming back to it?
Keanu Reeves: For me, it was perfect, because I was questioning mortality, what is my life, what’s going on? And that fit right in with Thomas Anderson.
AllHipHop: Okay. Now, before we go, I have to talk about all those fight sequences and being able to be at this point. Obviously in your life, even for me to do stuff I did 20 years ago, I’m like, are you kidding me? How challenging, or even fun, was it to get back into that action-packed, fueled moments there?
Keanu Reeves: Lots of fun, challenging, just survive, do the best you can, have fun.
Carrie-Anne Moss: It was great. It was amazing. That’s how we kind of start movies, is with this training time. So there’s a lot that happens in there. You’re learning your fights. You’re getting in shape. For me, I had to lose weight and I had to really get strong, and then you’re also developing the character within that, learning all this stuff and having fun, laughing, seeing your screen partner over there, killing it over there with all the-
Keanu Reeves: Oh, my back, oh, my knee.
Carrie-Anne Moss: And you’re getting inspired by watching him.
Keanu Reeves: Oh, my shoulder. Oh, oh.
Carrie-Anne Moss: Sitting in the ice, kneed together, sitting there, recovering together.
