Distinguished philosopher and activist Dr. Cornel West addressed Kanye’s rebrand. He said although Ye is “a genius in a way … he’s confused in a whole lot of ways too.”
A reporter for TMZ quoted Kanye’s “Drink Champs” remarks to Dr. Cornel West. His response was empathic, “Oh no, Kanye’s wrong.”
He then explained that, as an artist, Kanye should recognize the value of Black History Month. “Every performance is the authorizing of a future, in the midst of the present, trying to recover the best of the past.” He added, “Black History Month is not about the past. It’s about the past in the present that can authorize a better future.”
Dr. West says Ye only understands the concept in his music and used the example of “Jesus Walks,” Ye’s 2004 hit, co-written by Rhymefest. “There’s a sense in which his artistry is so much more profound than his rhetoric,” he added.
Furthermore, he said, “If Kanye thinks you can have Black Future Month without Black History Month, tell that brother to get off the symbolic crack pipe and be true to his own artistic genius.”
Dr. Cornell West Explains The Importance of Black History Month
He also responded to T-Pain’s comments that Black people should be “part of history not just one month of it.”
West agreed, however, he said it was wishful thinking because “white supremacy is still in operation.” He explained, “As long as white supremacy is around, you gone have the need to stress Black love, Black dignity Black history … those things that are being excluded and rendered silent.” he concluded, “So, in that sense, it’s a nice wish but we’ve got to come to terms with reality.”
Zumbi of Zion I passed away last August, but an investigation into his death has stalled.
Although initial reports suggested Zumbi died of COVID-19, police eventually opened a homicide investigation. The late rapper’s family believes he was killed in a physical altercation at a hospital.
Months later, Zumbi’s mother Carolyn Gaines is pleading for the investigation to move forward. She says there’s been no progress because police are waiting on a coroner’s report.
“I am dedicated to seeking justice for his killing,” she wrote in a statement. “My son did not die from COVID. My son did not die from a heart attack.”
She explained, “We are waiting for the Berkeley police to complete their homicide investigation. They say their delay is caused by not having a completed coroner’s report. I beg the officials to complete their official duties.”
Carolyn Gaines wants the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and Allied Universal to be held responsible for her son’s death. She hopes the investigation will reveal how Zumbi truly died.
“I pray that as soon as the Alameda County District Attorney reviews the evidence that they will prosecute Alta Bates, Allied Universal and their employees for killing my beautiful son,” she wrote. “We ask for your consideration and understanding as this process moves forward.”
She added, “There will be a time for thoughtful, peaceful and considered action from the community. For now, we seek your respect, support and understanding as we grieve and seek answers.”

2022 has brought some wild music in just a month’s time, but these new tracks from Philly’s Ot7Quanny show how the Chicago and the East Coast drill music sounds have meshed and moved across the country in a synchronized movement.
But this is a unique version of drill that’s yet to break into the mainstream, it’s a little slower. Check this joint from frequent collaborators Ot7Quanny and NR Boor titled “Dior Dior.” Fans who are familiar with his name may have came across it via his support from OVO Sound Radio and Audiomack’s 10 Rappers You Should Know.
After almost 50 years, Hip-Hop finally has a holy alliance designed to help rappers in their lives, their health, careers and overall wellness. Two of rap’s pioneers, and their new organization the Hip-Hop Alliance, have connected with the executives at SAG-AFTRA to pull off a cultural coup, which will allow for artists to receive benefits.
AllHipHop.com, in an exclusive interview, got the details.
Pioneer rapper Kurtis Blow, the Vice President of the Hip-Hop Alliance who suffered heart disease and received a transplant in 2021, said to Chuck Creekmur, “Well, we are actually proud to announce the partnership with SAG-AFTRA and the Hip-Hop Alliance.”
SAG-AFTRA and the Hip-Hop Alliance, an affiliate of the United Coalition for Humanity, are aiming to “build a better future for hip hop artists, and the entire music industry.” Chuck D currently serves as the president of the organization.
“What we want to do is, we want to join forces to promote fair wages and fair royalties, and also benefits, mental health and physical health benefits, retirement benefits. And this is all for the artists because the artists nowadays are in a bad way,” “The Breaks” rapper continued. “We all know, because of a pandemic, everything is shut down and it is so difficult to make a living. Theaters are shutting down all over the country, concert halls, clubs, what have you. So it is so very difficult to make a living, first and foremost.”
He continued, “Then you have these deals that these artists are in, and they are exploited, and it’s been happening for hundreds of years. So now we are coming together, a group of people, to stand up and say, ‘This is not right. Let’s change the game and create fairness for the artists who are out there giving their all to the community.’”
The Hip-Hop Alliance includes other artists like the Force MDs (Khalil Lundy and Stevie D. Lundy), Dr. Pebbles (aka Pebblee Poo), Billboard Baby, Alonzo E Williams, Darryll (DLB – Fearless 4) Barksdale, DJ Hollywood, William (Grandmaster D) Carter Billboard Baby and more. Others who are participating on the executive side are Bob Lee, Founder / Chairman Emeritus; Bishop Cathaye Jones, Executive Director; Jameson Bennett, Founder / Secretary; Nadia Young, Legal; Janice Pendarvis; Mandy Aragones; Melvin Kelly and Kurtis Walker Jr.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the National Executive Director for SAG-AFTRA said that he is excited about this movement, “Hip-Hop is and has long been a major force in American culture. We are thrilled to partner with the Hip-Hop Alliance and to work jointly to create a more equitable music ecosystem. Together, we will protect and empower artists through collaborative educational efforts and collective legislative actions, like the FAIR Act.”
The Chairman of the Hip Hop Alliance, Bishop Eric Gailliard said to Creekmur the urgency of this type of assembly is paramount.
“With the passing of these recent artists and these recent talents, it’s like an undercurrent where in the midst of all of this chaos and calamity and craziness… I’ll call it the three Cs, chaos, calamity, and craziness… throughout the world,” The Bishop shared. “We’re really coming back to this place called unity in the process of this grieving.”
This partnership with SAG-AFTRA will help prolong the lives and ensure the wellness of artists that we love so dearly, something we should have done years ago.
A day after Rihanna and A$AP Rocky debuted their baby bump to the public, former boo Drake unfollowed the singer. Black Twitter took the news and ran with it.
What have fans discovered?
Drake does not follow the girl he was rumored to have been involved within 2009. However, the “Certified Lover Boy” (whose album featured 12 pregnant very women), does follow A$AP Rocky. Rocky follows the Toronto chart-topper also. Rihanna doesn’t follow Drake.
The “God’s Plan” rapper has often toyed with the public mystery of him and Ri Ri dating, and the two have played it up for the cameras. A perfect example was the 2016 VMAs, where Drake gave a very complimentary speech about the “Wild Thoughts” singer — while she sat there and squirmed.
She would later tell Vogue, “Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.”
Rihanna also shared, back in 2018, that the two were not cool, saying, “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”
Since then, fans have seen Drake kicking it with Rihanna’s old ex Chris Brown.
While she has been very low-key… except for the occasional pop out with her new man … one that she claim-claims.
People magazine reports that a source said that Rihanna never wanted to be a mom until she started dating the Harlemite.
The insider said, “Having a baby is something she was never focused on, but being with Rocky opened her up to the idea. She couldn’t be happier and is so excited to be a mom.”
“She’s loving all the changes to her body during pregnancy and has always celebrated pregnant women in her runway shows for Fenty,” the contact continued. “Everything Rihanna does, she does it her own way on her own timetable, and having a baby is no different. They’re just like any other pair of parents-to-be. Yes, they happen to be famous but they’re just the cutest, giddiest young couple that’s expecting kids.”
The source told the popular magazine something that we all know, “A lot of guys have tried to sweep her off her feet, but Rocky actually managed to do it. He’s over-the-top romantic and sends her rooms full of flowers all the time. She’s never felt this way before and this relationship has changed her.”
A different insider gave us a bit we didn’t know … the two now “live together.”
“Everyone is happy it’s all working out. They will be great parents,” the person said.
No word from Drake about why he stopped following the billionaire fly girl. Probably came to the realization, that it just wasn’t going to happen.

Young Buck’s latest arrest gave 50 Cent more material for jokes.
50 Cent taunted his former collaborator in an Instagram post on Thursday (February 3). The social media insults started up again after Young Buck was apprehended for vandalizing his ex-girlfriend’s property.
“Buck B-Unit Bi sexual Unit,” 50 Cent wrote. “Leave that girl alone. she didn’t know he had all this s### going on,none of us did. And He best be coming up wit my money. @bransoncognac @lecheminduroi.”
Young Buck showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s home and damaged her property on Wednesday (February 2). She told police he kicked her door when she refused to answer. After he left, she discovered damage to her vehicle.
The Tennessee native was charged with vandalism over $1,000. He was released after posting a $1,000 bond and will have a court date in March.
50 Cent has been mocking Young Buck’s sexuality for years now. But the G-Unit boss also made a point to reference the embattled rapper’s debt.
According to 50 Cent, Young Buck still hasn’t fulfilled his contractual obligations to G-Unit. The Power executive producer claims his friend-turned-foe owes him $250,000.
Young Buck’s money troubles forced him to file for bankruptcy. The case has gotten complicated as he’s been accused of hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars from the bankruptcy estate.
