Dipset Affiliate Karim Butler aka Luca Brasi Speaks On His New Cannabis Brand GUMBO

It’s crazy to think how far the cannabis industry has come, from locking people up in jail for marijuana use to legalizing it in damn near every state in the country.

GUMBO Brands, is a new black-owned cannabis company who’s here to change the narrative completely.

GUMBO was created and founded by Bronx native Karim Butler, who got his start working with Dipset. The world-class cannabis cultivator is not only here to keep you lit, but leverage entrepreneurship and support racial justice outcomes and inclusion — especially with legalization having passed in New York.

GUMBO has seen organic support from all your favorite rappers, from 42 Dugg and Takeoff to Dave East and Lil Meech.

Introduced via a two-day, interactive pop-up experience during Rolling Loud in New York City, the name GUMBO hails from the fact that there’s a melting pot of high-quality items you can choose from when it comes to flower, merch, and everything in between.

From hustling in the streets to the music industry to now cannabis, Butler is someone who obtained success from putting the work in. In addition, he’s also a proud father of 4 who’s currently working on his first ever audiobook about motivation and self-worth.

AllHipHop: Can you describe GUMBO for those who don’t know?

Karim Butler: GUMBO is a black-owned cannabis brand, which I own. We’re expanding and extending our portfolio with merch and building everything. We’re showing people that not only are we the #1 and most consistent in the flower, but the brand itself reached another pinnacle as far as the culture and hip-hop. GUMBO is a pot full of love. It’s culture, it’s Hip Hop. It’s everything. It’s the youth. We’re transforming them. We’re getting them off this lean and opioids, giving them some good pot! We don’t want them to be leaned up, perked up, drinking fentanyl and poppin’ pills. We want to lean them towards health, we’re more towards the flower. We’re using it as a tool to save the community and the young black race.

AllHipHop: What was a young Karim Butler like coming out of the Bronx?

Karim Butler: Coming out of the South Bronx, migrated to Harlem, I always had that drive. I always had the entrepreneurial spirit in me. I’m the type of person that they’ll say I’ll sell water to a whale. I have the hustle spirit. Anything I did or I wanted to do as a child coming up: if I sold socks, I’d make sure I sell one million pairs of socks a day. I was the best at whatever I did. I was also co-partner with the alkaline company many years back. We presented alkaline water to many communities in the world.

Me coming up out the South Bronx, my grandparents were vendors. They started the 125th St. Association where people were able to come outside and sell merchandise everyday. I’ve always had that spirit in me of selling t-shirts and things of that nature. I’d go screenprint t-shirts and resell them. I’d go downtown and print a bunch of them, maybe 20 to 30 dozen, then come back and sell them for $10 apiece. I’ve always had that niche in me to make money and to show people how to legalize things, and do things in another manner where you don’t have to do things illegal.

AllHipHop: When did you get the nickname, Hustle Man?

Karim Butler: It was around 2000, 145th and Broadway. I was outside selling CDs, DVDs. Coogi’s, Prada, Fendi, whatever was hot, I would sell it. I’d go downtown to Canal Street, come back uptown. I’d sell people fake Coogi’s and Iceberg’s. I paid $50 for hats and sweaters, I’d turn around and sell it for $500 for the set, because the stores had them for $1000 for a sweater. Everybody knew they were knockoff, but guess what? They were getting them from me. They were getting them at a discounted rate and they loved it.

AllHipHop: Talk about the role you played in the formation of Dipset.

Karim Butler: Oh man, a major role. Cam’ron is a great friend of mine, so is Juelz and Jim. That’s an imperative role, we could be here for hours with that. Manage, market, promote. I did a lot of things with the Diplomats to raise their career at the time and the hype. At the time I was on 145th and Broadway, I was selling CDs at a rapid rate. That was the mixtape era. At the time Cam’ron, I and DJ Kay Slay did a mixtape called The Diplomats. That was the pinnacle for rap right there at that era, for The Diplomats. I played a very blunt instrument in the whole Diplomatic movement. Luca Brasi! I was in every song. Luca! Taliban. That was me. Luca, 145th and Broadway.

AllHipHop: How important was mixtape discovery?

Karim Butler: The mixtape discovery and impact, it got them a record label deal. We were selling more mixtapes than people were selling records at the time.

AllHipHop: Moving into the medicinal space, what’s the reality in launching your own cannabis company?

Karim Butler: The reality is you have a young black man from the South Bronx that hustled his whole life, busted his ass selling t-shirts, mixtapes, fake Iceberg’s and Coogi’s, that now owns an empire that’s legit and legal with GUMBO Brand. We grossed $250K the first pop-up we’ve ever had. It was a great success. It was at The Ainsworth downtown, 26th St. Takeoff, Lil Meech, Dave East, Bobby Shmurda, Jim Jones, 42 Dugg, a lot of people came out and supported the event. Not only that, it was such a success for me because I legitimized my company with my merchandise. Now you can get a GUMBO lighter, you can get a GUMBO hoodie or mask off the website.
Www.GumboBrands.com. It’s history.

That’s the reality of it all: your dreams can become reality. Anything that you think becomes true. I thought about something that would be lucrative like this, and I brought it into fruition. It’s here now. We’re building a brand, expanding our portfolio and keeping it organic. GUMBO is one of the best marijuana brands because we’re more in tune with the culture. I’ve lived the life of the streets. I come from these places so I see the impact it has on my community, the difference, the motivation and inspiration that I have for others. I can go into my DMs right now and read 50 different DMs about how people are saying how inspirational and motivational I am — and I’ve never even met these people. I feel better knowing I’m a black entrepreneur and a businessman that became a mogul for these people to realize that anything they want to do can become a reality.

AllHipHop: Talk about the New Balance x GUMBO collaboration.

Karim Butler: We had a New Balance collaboration, we grossed $250K with the merch pop-up. It was a two-day event at Ainsworth, it was amazing. It was way bigger than I could ever fathom to imagine. Not only was support given, but I saw people I’ve never met or known that were supporting me. They’re like “yo, this is crazy! I love the t-shirt, I love the mask.” It was a great experience and feeling for me to see people really enjoy it, other than the flower which is the merchandise. I got a real kick out of it to see people go crazy over the sneakers when they saw them. Dave East, Takeoff. If you pull up the video, you could see the reactions when people had when they saw the sneaker. Then I had a varsity jacket that dropped with it. It was tremendous support, it was amazing. It was a great turnout.

AllHipHop: How do you use your music expertise to now put it into the cannabis world?

Karim Butler: Everyone that I know from entertainers and famous people, we have these relationships. I make it conducive for everybody. Everybody loves to smoke. I did a collaboration with Dave East and called it Mafia GUMBO. This was before he did the EastCo GUMBO. That inspired him to do his strand, so now he has a strand with Cookies. It’s more each one each one. It’s more for building others and helping them with what they’re doing.

With the relationships with artists, everyone loves to smoke. Everyone loves GUMBO. GUMBO is the #1 weed right now. First you had the Haze, then the Zaza, the Exotics, now it’s GUMBO. I’m making it where they do GUMBO songs. We did a collab with Fabolous it’s called “Family GUMBO.” He has a song called “Going Dumbo for the GUMBO,” he has a video and everything. Those are the things I do with my artist friends. We do a lot of collabs and build each other. GUMBO is hot right now, we make the artists relevant as well. It’s GUMBO, we put it together. Make it good for the soul, make it good for everybody. For the culture.

AllHipHop: Is it named after gumbo, like the food?

Karim Butler: No, it was a mix up of a whole bunch of good diff things in one pot. That’s where the Gumbo came from.

AllHipHop: Would you ever go back to the music industry?

Karim Butler: No, because it’s fake. It’s fabricated. It’s all lies, it’s made up. The life they’re talking about, I’m living it. They’re talking about it, getting paid. That’s not fair to people like me. It’s fake. It’s animated, it’s fabricated. For me, I wasn’t a rapper. I was around Lil Wayne, I saw his success boom, when he started dealing with me. Cam’ron, Jim Jones, I’ve had people’s sucess within the industry. The things that you have to go through, I wouldn’t want to be a part of that. It’s just too much.

AllHipHop: What’re you most excited for next?

Karim Butler: The collabs that Marvin and I are doing. Everyday is a different venture.

Alexis Major: The future in terms of getting into the cultivation farming a space, getting into medical space to serve medical patients. We’re planning on launching GUMBO RX to serve medical patients the goodness of GUMBO, and more collaborations. We’re working on a collaboration with Vlone, looking at doing an Art Basel pop-up in Miami, and a whole bunch of things we can’t talk about yet. [laughs]

AllHipHop: Anything else you want to let the people know?

Karim Butler: I love y’all, appreciate y’all, Without y’all, there’s no me. There’s no us.

The Detroit native is best known for his hard-hitting rhymes, standout raspy voice, and undeniable flow, tackling the rap game before becoming the host of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride.”

Young Thug a No-Show for Alleged All-Inclusive Wal-Mart Shopping Spree

Young Thug’s presence commands attention. Recently, an encompassing; yet, unconfirmed rumor began to circulate. In it, allegations were made associating the PUNK MC, with an all-inclusive Wal-Mart shopping spree.

Soon, an Atlanta-area Wal-Mart, situated on Cleveland Avenue, became completely inundated with folks. While awaiting Thugger’s, supposed arrival, anxious individuals continued browsing. ATL Uncensored purportedly captured the aftermath of the faux shopping spree.

Eventually, hoards of filled buggies were abandoned. A stark reality, would dash the hope of a carte blanche retail experience. Sex was not in the building. Thus far, he, nor his camp, has responded to these controversial allegations.

Tragic news has hit the entertainment world, as reports declare that the wife of the iconic Black music executive Clarence Avant was murdered during an early morning home invasion.

The wife of 54 years was declared to the public to be dead after arriving at the hospital.

According to TMZ, Jacqueline Avant was 81 years old at the time of her death.

The Beverly Hills police department was called around 2:30 AM in the morning on Wednesday, December 1st.

The person shared that someone had broken into the house and that one of the residents had been shot with the dispatcher. However, by the time that the authorities responded to their Trousdale Estates home, she was already en route to the hospital. It is unclear if she died instantly, in transit, or after she arrived at the hospital.

What is also unknown is if anyone else was hit during the attempted burglary.

The publication also reports that the Godfather of Black Music, Mr. Avant was home during this tragedy. He has not released a statement on the loss of his wife to the press or the concerned public. Neither has their daughter Nicole, who is married to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.

Jackie, as she was affectionately called, was a philanthropist and an advocate for social justice. During her life, she served as the President of the Neighbors of Watts, a support group that focused on child care. She was on the Board of Directors of UCLA’s International Student Center.

AllHipHop.com sends our heartfelt condolences to the Avant family during this time of bereavement.

Columbus Short Questioned About Being Intimate With Britney Spears

Many fans and fellow celebrities celebrated Britney Spears finally getting autonomy from her 13-year conservatorship. The #FreeBritney social movement helped that conservatorship, once overseen by Britney’s father Jamie Spears, come to an end last month.

During an appearance on Daily Blast LIVE, one of Britney Spears’s most-famous former backup dancers was asked about the Pop culture icon. However, a question directed at Columbus Short focused on his rumored relationship with the “Toxic” hitmaker.

“You guys want some toast with those questions? Praise God that Britney is out of her conservatorship. She is allowed to be free to do her thing,” replied Columbus Short, purposely avoiding answering the question.

The Stomp the Yard actor continued, “She was a dear friend. It was an amazing part of my lifetime. [A] very big part of my life, on the trajectory of being able to operate on my gifts. Big shout out to [Britney] and her newfound freedom. I hope she keeps dancing.”

Previously, Columbus Short detailed his alleged hook up with Britney Spears in his Short Stories autobiography. The former Scandal star also claimed Spears’s parents once referred to him as a n##### after finding out she supposedly slept with the Kansas City-born choreographer. Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, denied the accusation.

Columbus Short and veteran actress Vivica A. Fox were guests on Tuesday’s edition of Daily Blast LIVE to promote True To The Game 3. The cast of the David Wolfgang-directed movie also features Omar Gooding, Darius McCrary, Jeremy Meeks, Niatia “Lil Mama” Kirkland, and others.

Porsha Williams Talks Being “Mentally Abused” By R. Kelly

Porsha Williams is currently promoting the Porsha’s Family Matters reality show and The Pursuit of Porsha memoir. One section of the book covers Williams’s past relationship with now-convicted sex trafficker Robert “R.” Kelly.

The Pursuit of Porsha reportedly details how R. Kelly allegedly invited the then-25-year-old Atlanta native to his Chicago mansion in 2007 to record music. Porsha Williams claimed she heard women being abused by Kelly and was traumatized by the experience.

This week, Porsha Williams stopped by The Tamron Hall Show to talk about the revelations detailed in her book. Hall asked The Real Housewives of Atlanta star about her time dealing with R. Kelly and why she spoke out about the ordeal now.

“Putting R. Kelly’s name in the book, because some people I named, some people I didn’t name, and putting his name in the book is just putting a name to another face that I had already encountered before,” stated Porsha Williams. “He had just been one of the men who was a predator in my life, who had taken advantage of me and mentally abused me in my life.”

Williams added, “So I saw him no different than those same men. That same darkness, the same treatment, they faced and met the same Porsha who didn’t know her self-worth. I didn’t love myself. I didn’t see who I was in those situations. I was a grown woman. I had a penthouse in Buckhead. I had my own business. I wasn’t your usual so-called victim. But because as a young woman, I did not value who I was.”

On September 27, a federal jury in Brooklyn found R. Kelly guilty of racketeering, bribery, sexual exploitation of a child, forced labor, and sex trafficking. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to life in prison. Kelly was also indicted for federal child pornography and obstruction charges in Illinois. That case is pending.

Hip Hop Loves provide a means and a platform for individuals to come together and make a difference in their communities.

“By creating art as a response to violence and oppression, these emcees are engaging nonviolent principles to fight for justice and change. The emcees are raising their voices and asking the public to listen and come together as one.”

The music project stems from a Harlem workshop for high school students back in 2014. Recorded around the time of the killings of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner, the contributors worked with Dr. Yusef Salaam of the Central Park Exonerated to record “Times Are Changing: Hands Up Every Day.” That song marked the genesis of the project and the foundation soon recorded songs with students from HHL workshops in Atlanta and Moscow, Russia.

The 23-track project features artists from three different generations including 10-year-old emcee Imoik from Venezuela, homegrown 17-year-old emcee phenom Lil’ Dee, and legendary singer Peabo Bryson.

Other notable artists and living legends on the album include Aloe Blacc (Panama/USA), Michael McDonald (USA), Oleta Adams (USA), El Da Sensei (USA), J Rawls (USA), Maya Jupiter (Australia/Mexico/Turkey), Mirrah (Australia), Kamau (Brazil), Xidus Pain (UK), David D Omni (Cuba) Fatima Rivera (Chile), Mohammed Yahya (Mozambique/UK), Dumi Right (Zimbabwe), Jason Chu (China) Mikko Kapanen (Finland) and many others.

René John-Sandy II, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Hip Hop Loves Foundation said the album focuses on adopting unity-based solutions.

“For volume 2 of this project we felt it was really paramount to encompass a feeling  of oneness and Unity. Love is the key element in obtaining this. Also, we felt we can talk about all  of the issues that exist, but if we don’t create some solutions addressing them, we are not  serving justice to the cause. Global Love Revolution is the most fitting title to emphasize this.”

“Stop Shooting Volume 2: Global Love Revolution” is available on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, Google Play, and other various streaming platforms. Revenue and donations made to support the project on streaming platforms and www.hiphoploves.org will benefit the Hip Hop Loves Foundation to facilitate workshops with youths in Brazil and in the United States.

Three 6 Mafia and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are set to go head-to-head in the next Verzuz battle. The musical matchup between two of the greatest rap groups of all time will take place on December 2.

The 46-year-old rapper/producer continued, “A lot of drugs were consumed during the times we were together. When everybody was sober and s###, everybody’s on the same page. But when cocaine’s involved, things change. But I’m not pointing a finger at nobody.”

Fellow Illinois native Vic Mensa shared a new song as a tribute to the late Virgil Abloh. “What You Taught Us” is a two-minute reflection on Abloh’s impact on Mensa and the wider culture.

“Virgil Abloh is synonymous with visionary,” says Vic Mensa. “To see him go from DJing Superfun parties in Chicago that Hollywood Holt would sneak me in when I was 16 to revolutionizing the way we think about design and its applications is a true inspiration to a generation that was blessed to be raised under his tutelage. Legends never die.”

Prior to his death, Virgil Abloh served as the artistic director for French fashion house Louis Vuitton. Abloh also once worked as the creative director of Kanye West’s Donda agency.

A statement on the verified Virgil Abloh Instagram account read:

He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.

Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations.

We thank you all for your love and support, and we ask for privacy as we grieve and celebrate Virgil’s life.

LeBron James Reportedly Tests Positive For COVID-19

LeBron James has tested positive for COVID-19 and missed Tuesday night’s game against the Sacramento Kings.

TMZ Sports report that “LeBron James tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon using a lateral flow test. James was given a follow-up PCR test to confirm the diagnosis. However, that test came back negative. LeBron was then given a third tie-breaker test … which came back positive.”

Reports suggest that he is currently asymptomatic, however, according to NBA insider, Shams Charania of The Athletic:

“Lakers star LeBron James will be sidelined for at least 10 days, or unless he returns two negative test results in 24 hours moving forward.”

Meanwhile, ESPN also reports that LeBron James will sit out several games as per the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

While LeBron James is fully vaccinated he has encouraged others to exercise personal choice when considering whether to get the jab.

“We’re talking about individuals’ bodies,” he said back in September. “We’re not talking about something that’s political, or racism, or police brutality. Things of that nature. We’re talking about people’s bodies and well-being.”

He added, “So, I don’t feel like, for me personally, that I should get involved in what other people should do for their bodies and their livelihoods.”

Snoop Dogg spoke on his commitment to the technology and how it will affect his future projects. “Over the last year I have become a collector, a creator and a collaborator of art on the blockchain. This technology has inspired me to rethink how I work and release my art into the world.”

He continued, “Coldie is a thought leader, and I am a big fan of what he is creating so when he told me about his concept for this portrait I was immediately on board. In fact, I had to get in the lab and give it that personal touch. You don’t just see it, you feel it and you hear it. You digg. I want this piece to stand out as a representation of my vision in the metaverse. It’s Decentralized, Decentral eyes.”

Dave East on Meeting Nipsey Hussle

Dave was a friend and collaborator to Nipsey Hussle and has often spoken about how inspired he was by the visionary rapper. Last year, Dave East recalled the start of his friendship with Nip on an episode of “Drink Champs.”

“When I met Nip, everybody that was with me grew up with him. I met him in L.A., I met him off Crenshaw and Slauson in his parking lot right where that happened…” he said. “I called him. I said, ‘I’m in L.A.’ He said, ‘Go to the store.’ I just had Kairi, he said, ‘I’ma get you and your daughter a package together. Just go over there.’ At this time, Fatts was in the store. Rest in peace Fatts, that was his left-hand man. Fatts got me together, got me all kind of Crenshaw s**t for my moms, my daughter. Nip pulled up and from that day on, we were locked in.”

Asian Doll Faces Internet Trolls After Asian-Themed B-day Party Announcement

Asian Doll knows controversy. In the past, her impassioned stances have been polarizing. So, how could a birthday invite become offensive? Well, it has actually happened. Recently, she announced her, “Escapes to India” themed birthday party. Unbeknownst to Asian Da Brat, this would lead to a tremendous amount of internet trolling.

Perhaps, this intense criticism is what lead the “No Exposing” rapper to delete her Instagram account. Many people have gone on to accuse the Dallas, TX native of cultural appropriation. See, this is an instance of the internet being a whole hypocrite.

The birthday invite does not possess any instances of demeaning jabs at the Asian culture. Nor, does it contain any pejorative undertones. Back in February, Asian Doll, did tweet out her thoughts about Indian food being “nasty.” That, in no way, justifies any leap to landing on cultural appropriation.

Embracing caution, Queen Von has issued a terse apology. “If I offended anyone I’m sorry. I’m still having my party tho [sic] just come as you are”

Along with an array of responses, check out her apology:

Why is it that Black people are often encouraged to turn cheeks and be unyieldingly inclusive; whereas, other ethnic groups are allowed to be exclusionary?

Mac Miller’s Drug Dealer Claims He Did Not Know What Was In Deadly Pills

One of the dealers who distributed the drugs involved Mac Miller’s death claimed to not know what was in the pills.

Stephen Andrew Walter, 48, pleaded guilty to one felony count of distributing fentanyl on Tuesday. But at the hearing, Walter told the judge he wasn’t aware of what was inside the pills that were sold to Mac Miller.

“I was charged with selling blue pills, little blue counterfeit oxycontin pills … and I didn’t know what was in them,” Walter said, according to the New York Post. “I didn’t know, like, fentanyl was in it. But I do say, yes, that I aided and abetted the transaction.”

Ryan Michael Reavis, 38, also pleaded guilty to felony distribution of fentanyl on Tuesday. A case is still pending against a third co-defendant named Cameron James Pettit.

Mac Miller died from an accidental drug overdose in 2018. Pettit allegedly sold counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl to the late rapper.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office insists Walter knew the pills contained fentanyl despite his claims to the contrary. Prosecutors say he directed Reavis to provide the drugs to Pettit.

“I never met [Mac Miller] before,” Walter said at the hearing. “I only talked to Cameron. I didn’t know what his intentions were with the pills. After he saw Ryan Reavis, I didn’t know what he was going to do with them.”

Walter will be sentenced for his role in Mac Miller’s death on March 7, 2022. He and Reavis are both facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Birdman and NBA YoungBoy’s collaborative release was originally supposed to drop in March 2018. The release date came and went with no project as both artists never explained why it didn’t drop.

From The Bayou became an afterthought over the past few years as Birdman and NBA YoungBoy continued dropping music on their own. The former unleashed collaborative albums with Juvenile and Jacquees while the latter delivered a multitude of solo projects.

The upcoming Birdman collab continues a busy second half of 2021 for NBA YoungBoy. In September, he dropped his Sincerely, Kentrell album and reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart for the fourth time in his career.

NBA YoungBoy, who’s currently on house arrest for gun charges, also put out Never Broke Again: The Compilation, Vol. 1 in November. Birdman, on the other hand, hasn’t released a new project since 2019.
