Rod Wave Talks Sampling Paramore For “Crazy” Track

It appears Rod Wave is on track to score another No. 1 album. Nostalgia will likely become the rapper/singer’s third chart-topper.

According to HitsDailyDouble, Rod Wave’s Nostalgia will pull in around 130,000-140,000 first-week units. That projected range should be enough for the studio LP to land atop next week’s Billboard 200 chart.

In addition, a 130,000-140,000 opening week would put Wave in third place for a Hip-Hop debut in 2023. Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape amassed 167,000 first-week units. Travis Scott’s Utopia debuted with 496,000 units.

Rod Wave previously led the Billboard 200 with 2021’s SoulFly and 2022’s Beautiful Mind. The Florida native also made it into the Top 10 with the Ghetto Gospel LP in 2019 and the Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory EP in 2022.

Nostalgia hosts a track titled “Crazy.” That record borrows elements from “Ain’t It Fun” by Tennessee-bred band Paramore. Rod Wave spoke to Zane Lowe about that sample for Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily Radio show.

“I wasn’t even aware that they weren’t fond of clearing songs until I was actually in that boat. I was writing them and DMing them on Instagram,” said Wave about getting permission from Paramore to use parts of “Ain’t It Fun” for his song.

He also added, “The song is real personal to me. So all my music, I try to just shed light on my background and what made me who I am, the reason I’m this kind of artist, the reason I’m who I am. So I always try to just shed light on that. Just the way [Paramore’s Hayley Williams] painting a picture vividly gives you both sides of the good and the bad.”

Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun” came out on the group’s self-titled 2013 album. The Justin Meldal-Johnsen-produced single peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The RIAA certified “Ain’t It Fun” as 3x-Platinum in 2019.

Kai Cenat Looks To Be Directing A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s Music Video

Award-winning streamer Kai Cenat has become one of the most prominent figures in modern-day Hip-Hop media. The NYC native apparently linked with fellow New Yorker A Boogie wit da Hoodie for official business.

Over the weekend, Kai Cenat shared a clip of himself from what seemed to be a music video set. The 21-year-old internet personality captioned his video, “Directed by yours truly.”

A Boogie wit da Hoodie also posted the same 7-second video to the Instagram Story on the verified @aboogievsartist account. The Highbridge, Bronx representative simply added, “@kaicenat 🫶🏿.”

Kai Cenat has had A Boogie wit da Hoodie on his Twitch livestream on several occasions. The two entertainers also went viral together earlier this year because of a video of Cenat getting caught in the middle of A Boogie arguing with his partner, Ella Bands.

It has been a very newsworthy week for Kai Cenat. His 24-hour livestream with Offset made headlines around the internet. Cenat even had to come to the Migo member’s defense against rumors he cheated on his wife, Cardi B, while on the stream.

Before apparently connecting with Kai Cenat for new visuals, A Boogie wit da Hoodie dropped his Me vs. Myself album in December 2022. He already premiered video-backed singles such as “Take Shots” featuring Tory Lanez.

In addition, A Boogie released his B4 BOA EP on September 8 of this year. That 3-track project included the songs “Her Birthday,” “B#### Trap” and “Did Me Wrong.” The EP is a precursor to the upcoming Better Off Alone album.

The Atlantic Records artist also contributed to Metro Boomin’s “Calling” with Swae Lee and Nav. All four men performed the tune off the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

Soulja Boy Reacts To Getting Clowned For His Chain Breaking Onstage

Once again, Soulja Boy is the subject of viral content. The 33-year-old entertainer became the collective internet’s latest punching bag after footage of an onstage mishap made the rounds online.

While performing his “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” single during a recent show, a pendant appears to fall from Soulja Boy’s chain. Video of the moment ignited jokes, memes, and disses on social media.

No Jumper‘s X account shared the footage on September 16. A caption for the Adam22-led outlet’s post read, “Soulja Boy’s chain fell apart while he was performing at his concert 😳.”

SB then specifically took aim at No Jumper. The iSouljaBoyTellem album creator also addressed anyone online clowning his jewelry trouble during his performance.

No Jumper, if you don’t shut your b#### ass up, n####, and stop posting me on your f###### blog with this random s###,” said Soulja Boy into the camera.

The Chicago-born, Atlanta-bred rhymer also added, “I had on tennis chains, n####. I had on too many chains, first of all, I had on tennis chains. This m############ chain is too heavy for this link.”

In addition to Soulja Boy, other Hip Hop figures have called out Adam22 and No Jumper for their media coverage. Joe Budden blasted his fellow podcaster last year. Latto called out the No Jumper founder in February.

Cardi B Claps Back At Troll For Falsely Accusing Her Father Of Being A Pedophile

Following this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, tension between people connected to Cardi B and people connected to Nicki Minaj boiled over into internet drama, public callouts, and threats.

Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth “Zoo” Petty, was at the center of the situation. Petty and some of his associates shared videos and posts supposedly threatening Cardi B and her husband Offset.

That apparently led to Offset sending one of the men a direct message on Instagram. As the drama played out, social media users began offering their opinions about the dispute.

Kenneth Petty’s 1995 conviction for attempted rape by force also came up. One X (formerly Twitter) user then tried to push a false narrative about one of Cardi B’s family members.

“Cardi B’s father is a convicted [rapist].. and [pedophile] too,” read a tweet from the @yonceonikafenty account. Going by their screen name and timeline, the person appeared to be a fan of Nicki Minaj and a Cardi B critic.

In response, Cardi fired back, “First it was the video lying on Offset, now it’s lies on my dad. I’m pretty sure ya know offenders have to take a pic every year.”

The “Bongos” rapper continued, “Keep it cute on family… Especially offenders, pedos and molesters cuz everybody gonna wanna cry when I start talking about the real p#### snatchers.”

It appeared clear Cardi B was referring to the fact that Kenneth Petty is a registered sex offender. A jury also convicted Nicki Minaj’s brother, Jelani Maraj, of repeatedly raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty also face legal issues from the woman Zoo was convicted of sexually assaulting. Jennifer Hough sued the couple for stalking and intimidation, claiming they supported threats made against her as a way to force the former New York City resident to recant her story about Petty.

‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’ Delays Season 2 Debut Due To Writers Strike

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike beginning on May 2, 2023. As a result, movie and television productions, including The Jennifer Hudson Show, have been shut down.

Several daytime talk shows like Jennifer Hudson’s program planned to head back to TV despite screenwriters continuing their work stoppage. The Drew Barrymore Show initially kicked off the returns.

However, Drew Barrymore walked back the decision to broadcast her show during the writers strike. Now Hudson has also chosen to push back the Season 2 premiere of The Jennifer Hudson Show.

According to Variety, The Jennifer Hudson Show was set to come back on Monday, September 18. The criticism directed at Barrymore, Hudson, and other talk show hosts likely caused the postponements.

Other daytime talk shows such as The View and Tamron Hall continue to air. Real Time with Bill Maher will also present new episodes on Friday nights. Maher stated, “It has been five months, and it is time to bring people back to work.”

The Jennifer Hudson Show debuted on September 12, 2022. Season 1 featured appearances by Simon Cowell, Viola Davis, LL Cool J, Kelly Rowland, Marlon Wayans, Jonathan Majors, Kerry Washington, Kamala Harris, and other celebrities.

Prior to taking on a daytime talk show gig, Jennifer Hudson became a household name as an EGOT-winning singer/actress. The former American Idol contestant won an Academy Award for her role in 2007’s Dreamgirls. She is also a Tony winner, Daytime Emmy winner and 2-time Grammy winner.

Skepta took a very hands-on approach to his collection and spent two days painstakingly embroidering bouclé bomber jackets with crystal-encrusted monograms, according to an interview with fashion bible Vogue.

“People will think this is just a money thing,” Skepta explained to British Vogue. “It was the same thing as when I started DJing, but I was DJing before I was rapping. It’s not like my mum’s gonna come and defend me in the comments and tell people I used to knit or go up to the high street to buy fabric and sew my own clothes.”

Skepta Says “I’m Not Trying To Humiliate People With My Clothes”

Elsewhere during the interview, he also explained his long-term vision for Mains and his desire to shake up the industry.

“We didn’t wanna delete our DNA. It’s real council estate style. But elevated,” Skepta explained. “Fashion is in a stagnant place. Think of the old Chanel shows when the models would just walk and spin and get to the camera and f###### pose. Now it’s like ‘What’s the craziest thing we can do? Can we send someone out in a dress made of sweetcorn?’ I’m not trying to humiliate people with my clothes.”

He added, “I want you to feel good when you’re walking around. I want to make clothes that are in vintage stores in 200 years. I want someone from the streets to wear this and feel f****** luxurious.”

DDG Admits Viral Home Invasion Video Was A Skit: “I Run The Internet”

DDG had fans concerned for his safety after the Pontiac-bred rapper shared a bizarre video of a pair of masked men breaking into his home and slapping him while he was asleep.

In the clip, seemingly captured by a video surveillance camera in his home, the unidentified men approach his bed and whack him across the head before fleeing the scene. A confused DDG then wakes up and grabs a weapon before turning on the light.

He posted the video on September 15, writing, “Whoever you are, I don’t know what type of sick game you think you playing. I don’t know if you think it’s cool to sneak into my house and put your hands on me as a joke. It’s not funny,” DDG said.

However, it turns out the incident was a prank. On Sunday (September 17), DDG returned to social media to address the now-viral video.

“y’all really think a n#### ran in my crib & slapped me & dipped or y’all trolling?” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

In a follow-up tweet, he added, “i run the internet.. y’all gon read about me forever.. get used to it.”

DDG also addressed the backlash to his prank after social media users accused him of clout chasing. According to the “I’m Geekin” hitmaker, he’s just capitalizing on his ability to go viral. Furthermore, he believes people are missing out by not doing the same thing.

“clout = money,” he declared. “Y’all n##### just don’t know how to convert it.”

Halle Berry Explains Her Fury Over Drake Using Her Image On “Slime You Out” Artwork

Halle Berry believes Drake disrespected her by using an image of her slime-covered face on the cover of his latest single despite her refusal to give him permission.

Last week, the O.V.O. founder teased his latest single, “Slime You Out,” featuring SZA, by unveiling the artwork. The single cover was an image of the Oscar-winning actor getting slimed at Nickelodeon’s 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards.

However, on Friday (September 15), Berry let it be known that she did not approve of the image.

“Sometimes you have to be the bigger guy…even if you’re a woman!” she shared in an Instagram post. She revealed the message was about the Hip-Hop superstar when a commenter asked her thoughts on the cover art.

“Hence my post today,” she replied. “When people you admire disappoint you you have to be the bigger person and move on !”

Furthermore, Halle Berry claimed that Drake used the image even after she turned him down, which she took as a “f### you,” as she told his team she didn’t like the association of her slime-covered face with the song.

“He did have his people call my people call my people and I said NO,” she added. “I didn’t like that image of slime all over my face in association with his song. And he chose to do it anyway ! You see…that is the disrespect. Not cool !”

When another commenter questioned, “Why you mad,” after saying Drake likely sought permission from the copyright holders, Getty Images, Halle Berry clarified her point.

“Cuz he asked me and i said NO that’s why,” she replied. “Why ask if you intend to do what you want to do ! That was the f–k you to me. Not cool. You get it?”

When another fan told the “Bruised” director: “I would be more upset about the meaning of the pic. ‘Slime you’ what does that mean exactly? Hmm…,” Halle agreed, adding, “Exactly! What does that mean?”

In another response, she declared, “It’s about principles and integrity. So happy many of you get that.”

Eminem Joins 50 Cent Onstage In Detroit For Surprise Performance

50 Cent gave Detroit concertgoers the surprise they had hoped for, bringing out Eminem at his latest tour stop.

The G-Unit founder pulled into the Motor City Sunday night (September 17) for his Final Lap tour with a very special guest in tow. He was joined onstage by one of the city’s most famous exports, his mentor and longtime collaborator, Eminem.

The Detroit icon stunned fans as he emerged from backstage to spit his verse on “Patiently Waiting,” alongside Fiddy. The duo also shut down the stage with their 2009 hit “Crack a Bottle.”

After leaving the crowd in a frenzy, Eminem showed love to 50 Cent before departing the stage.

“Detroit, make some noise for one of the best friends I’ve ever known, 50 Cent,” Eminem told the audience. “Make some noise for Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday y’all.” Check out the clip below.

After the show, 50 Cent took to Instagram to share a clip from their joint performance.

Back in February, Fif shared a throwback video filmed shortly after he released his first LP. The clip featured the iconic trio predicting the album’s impact.

“When you have a team like this it’s hard to lose,” 50 penned in the caption. “I’m so blessed to have worked with the best ever. you can re-write a book, you can re -write a song but you can’t re-write history. The 3 headed monster EM, DRE and 50cent. Boom”

Pete Davidson Jokes About “Post-Rehab Glow,” Admits He Took Ketamine Daily For 4 Years

Pete Davidson has addressed his recent stint in rehab. According to PEOPLE, the “Bupkis” star recently joked about his “post-rehab glow” during a comedy show in Atlantic City with fellow comedians John Mulaney and Jon Stewart.

“I am fresh out of rehab, everyone,” Pete Davidson told the crowd at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Ettes Arena. “I got that post-rehab glow. Seventh time’s the charm!”

During the show, Davidson revealed he took ketamine daily for four years. He described the drug as “magical” and recalled its ability to alter his mind.

“One time, I got ‘The Wiggles’ to mesh with ‘Schindler’s List,'” the comedian quipped.

The “King of Staten Island” actor, who’s set to celebrate his 30th birthday in November, also admitted he attended Aretha Franklin’s 2018 funeral while high and told the audience they shouldn’t take illicit drugs after turning 30.

“(You) can’t do drugs in your 30s (because) it’s not cute anymore (and) you’re just a drug addict,” he said.

In June, it was reported that the former “Saturday Night Live” star had checked into rehab to address his ongoing mental health issues. No word if Kanye West helped play a role in driving Davidson to rehab after the rap star’s high-profile attacks on the comedian for dating his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.

Kardashian admitted West helped end the relationship and that Davidson “suffered” for dating her. The SKIMS founder didn’t divulge exactly what led to the split. However, she hinted West’s adverse public reaction to their romance was a factor.

“There was a lot of guilt,” Kardashian revealed. “Pete went through a lot because of my relationship.”

Donald Glover Developing Lando Calrissian Movie

Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian TV series will now be a movie.

It was announced in July that the “Atlanta” star and his brother Stephen had been tapped by Disney and Lucasfilm to make “Lando,” a TV series about the “Star Wars” character Donald played in 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

However, Stephen revealed during an appearance on the “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast that “Lando” would now be a movie.

“It’s not even a show… the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information,” he told the host.

Representatives for Lucasfilm later confirmed the news. The “Lando” project has gone through many changes. When it was first announced in December 2020, Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien was attached to helm the limited series.

However, the filmmaker found out he had been replaced when Donald Glover and Stephen’s involvement was announced in July.

“This is me finding out (right now),” he wrote on his Instagram Stories. “Donald is a national treasure. Glad he and Stephen get to carry the character forward their way. Can’t wait to see. Rooting for everybody Black.”

In a video interview with GQ in April, Donald Glover declared that he would “love to play” Lando again in the “right” project.

“I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck,” he stated. “I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”

Lando was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

Ciara Predicted Her Big Music Career When She Was In High School

Ciara had ambitious dreams about her music career back in high school.

In an interview with Billboard, the R&B singer remembered when she declared that she would top the Billboard singles chart within a year of graduating from Riverdale High School in Riverdale, Georgia, in 2003.

“I was on camera, documented right at the graduation, and the guy said, ‘So, Ciara, where do you see yourself a year from now?'” she recalled. “And in my super-Atlanta thick accent, I said, ‘I see myself having the No. 1 song on the Billboard charts!’ And then literally, Goodies was No. 1 on the Billboard charts. I dreamed big!”

Ciara released “Goodies,” featuring Petey Pablo as the lead single from her debut album of the same name, in June 2004 It stayed on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks, making it the longest-running number-one debut single by a female artist on the chart since 1977.

Reflecting on the upcoming 20th-anniversary of “Goodies,” the 37-year-old admitted she feels like she’s only just getting started.

“I feel blessed. I feel like I’m just getting started at the same time,” Ciara gushed. “To know that it was 20 years ago that I was just really, really ambitious… dreaming big, I envisioned that I’d be sitting somewhere like this 20 years later.”

The Goodies album also spawned the hit singles “1, 2 Step,” featuring Missy Elliott, and “Oh,” featuring Ludacris.

Sean Penn Whines Over Double Standard After Will Smith Slap At Oscars

Sean Penn is just getting around to criticizing Will Smith over his infamous Oscars slap. In 2022, Smith slapped Oscars presenter Chris Rock after the comic mentioned Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in a joke.

Later that evening, the “Men in Black” star won the Best Actor award for his performance in “King Richard.”

Weighing in on the controversy in an interview with Variety, Sean Penn said, “I don’t know Will Smith. I met him once. He seemed very nice when I met him. He was so f###### good in ‘King Richard.’ So why the f### did you just spit on yourself and everybody else with this stupid f###### thing?”

“Why did I go to f###### jail for what you just did? And you’re still sitting there? Why are you guys standing and applauding his worst moment as a person?” the “Milk” actor added in reference to his own past and the apparent double standard that exists in Hollywood.

In 1987, Sean Penn was ordered to spend 60 days in jail after he punched a songwriter because he thought the man kissed his then-wife, Madonna.

The Oscar winner then claimed the Will Smith/Chris Rock incident would have never occurred if the Academy had allowed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to appear at the ceremony as he had suggested.

“This f###### b####### wouldn’t have happened with Zelensky,” he stated. “Will Smith would never have left that chair to be part of stupid violence. It never would have happened.”

Teyana Taylor Announces Separation From Iman Shumpert; Denies Infidelity Led To Spilt

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert have separated after seven years of marriage—and apparently, they’ve been living apart for awhile. Taylor revealed the news in an Instagram post on Sunday (September 17), denying cheating had anything to do with their split. Rumors started to swirl last week after a blog site claimed the former NBA player cheated on his wife with a woman signed to his record label. An Instagram post showed the woman donning a chain similar to Shumpert’s, although the woman in question has since debunked the notion. Evidently fed up with the chatter, Taylor decided to take matters into her own hands.

“AHT AHT! Not too much on my bestie!” she wrote. “In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while. To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children. Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain’t ever played with or about THAT.

“We just keep y’all a#### out the group chat lol, which is the reason we’ve been able to successfully & peacefully separate without all of the outside noise. The only reason I’m even sharing THIS part of the chat is because the narratives are getting a little out of hand & it’s unfair to all parties involved. I hope this provided some clarity for y’all. Okay AunTey taking y’all back out the chat bye!”

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert’s relationship has been seeped in controversy for years. In August 2022, Taylor copped to having threesomes with her husband in the past. As she said at the time, “People be surprised by how the woman initiates a lot of stuff. I’m not poly, but when everybody heard that me and my husband had threesomes before, they were like, ‘She’s willing to do that to keep a man,’ but that was all me!”

The Shumperts wed in October 2016. They welcomed their first daughter, Junie, in December 2015 and their second daughter, Rue, in September 2020

Lateef The Truthspeaker’s New Group The Strangers Release Debut Album

Bay Area Hip-Hop staple Lateef The Truthspeaker (Blackalicious/Latyrx) has joined forces with French MC Leeroy (Saïan Supa Crew) and Hervé Salters (General Elektriks) for a new group called The Strangers. The Hip-Hop/funk hybrid released their debut, self-titled album on Friday (September 15).

“Hailing from the year 2222, The Strangers are sending us a time capsule in reverse, a sonic testimony from the future,” a press release says of the concept album. “Their songs tell us that in 200 years, the Earth Federation political system will be based on the obligation for everyone to travel annually, starting from a very young age. As a result, fear of the unknown will have disappeared and so will the concept of war. But humans of the future will be forced to travel. Some will refuse to do so and fight for their right to stay home. Can securing a better world justify oppression?”

It continues, “The 3 Strangers use the future as a means to talk about the present. But they also inject a healthy dose of humor and energy into their music, and if what they wrote is indeed a concept album, it should be filed somewhere between The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper and Quasimoto’s The Unseen, two records whose basic premise gives birth to an unbridled playing field.”

The 13-track project is currently available on all streaming platforms. Find it below.

JJ Fad Disputes Fab 5 Freddy’s Claim Ice Cube Wrote Entire “Supersonic” Album

As the First Ladies of Ruthless Records, JJ Fad broke down several barriers for women in Hip-Hop. In 1989, the trailblazing trio—comprised of MC JB, Sassy C and Baby D—became the first female rap group to earn a Grammy Award nomination for their debut album, Supersonic, which was released the year prior. But it appears some of the facts surrounding JJ Fad’s career are still being misconstrued. Last week, former MTV VJ and Hip-Hop legend Fab 5 Freddy sat down with Angela Yee for an episode of her Way Up podcast, where he incorrectly stated Ice Cube wrote all of Supersonic.

“Ice Cube wrote that entire album,” he said. “I did the same thing. And it was Jerry Heller, the head of Ruthless Records, who told me that. And I was like wait. I did a double take and had to ask him like twice. But that’s the skill of a writer. Like, ‘OK, I can write for women.’ He put it all together for them, which was pretty incredible to think about at that time.”

Once JJ Fad caught wind of Fab 5 Freddy’s comments, they quickly addressed them on social media, calling them “false.” Speaking to AllHipHop, MC JB explained why it was so bothersome.

“We love our brother Ice Cube and thank him so much for his contributions to our album,” she said. “He was in the studio when we recorded our album, and he wrote a couple of our diss songs, but in no way did he write our entire album. JJ Fad wrote the majority of our album, including [the single] ‘Supersonic.’ We are very proud of that.

“We want to set the record straight as women that we are more than capable of writing, producing and performing in this Hip-Hop genre, and all genres. We honor and respect the femcees of today who are doing it all. We have no beef with Fab 5 Freddy. We just wish he would have done the research before speaking out on such a large platform that questions our authenticity.”

Supersonic arrived in June 1988 with production by N.W.A members Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, alongside Arabian Prince, who served as co-producer. Singles included the title track, “Way Out” and “Is It Love.” The title track reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play Songs and No. 22 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. It stayed on the dance charts for eight weeks. The single was ultimately certified gold by RIAA, a first for Ruthless Records.

JJ Fad still tours the world, sharing their innate talent with their fans.

The newly organized lineup then released a single called “Pootie Tangin'” for the Pootie Tang soundtrack before Williams returned to the group. 702 followed up with the album Star, which contained the single “I Still Love You.” The group broke up in 2006. Orish Grinstead—who was Irish’s twin and one of the founding members of the group—died in April 2008 at 27 years old.

Rolling Stone Co-Founder Jann Wenner Kicked Off Rock Hall Board After Alarming NYT Interview

Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine in 1967, was kicked off the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Board of Directors over the weekend. The Rock Hall issued a terse statement announcing the news on Saturday (September 16), writing simply, “Jann Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.”

The unanimous decision to vote Wenner off the committee came after his alarming interview with the New York Times in which he made some disparaging comments about Black and female artists. Wenner intended to plug his new book, The Masters, which features interviews with musicians Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend and U2’s Bono — all white and male. When asked why he didn’t include women or Black artists, Wenner replied, “It’s not that they’re inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest.

“You know, Joni [Mitchell] was not a philosopher of rock ’n’ roll. She didn’t, in my mind, meet that test. Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters,’ the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level.”

Wenner apologized through his publisher, Little, Brown and Company, saying: “In my interview with The New York Times I made comments that diminished the contributions, genius and impact of Black and women artists and I apologize wholeheartedly for those remarks. I totally understand the inflammatory nature and badly chosen words and deeply apologize and accept the consequences.”

Wenner also co-founded the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which was launched in 1987. He seemed to acknowledge he would face a backlash while speaking to the Times, saying. “Just for public relations sake, maybe I should have gone and found one Black and one woman artist to include here that didn’t measure up to that same historical standard, just to avert this kind of criticism.”

Wenner left Rolling Stone in 2019.
