Pioneering DJ Kool Herc Set To Be Honored In Jamaica With Highest National Honor

Though the official 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop has passed, the world is continuing to honor the culture’s recognized progenitor. DJ Kool Herc, whose infamous Back to School Jam sparked Hip-Hop as a movement, will also be honored by his native land, Jamaica.

Also known as the “Big Island,” authorities within the country are set to bestow the nation’s most esteemed awards upon Herc and 125 other Jamaicans during the observance of National Heroes Day in October 2023. These recipients have all excelled in diverse arenas such as education, music, medicine, philanthropy, politics and more, according to Jamaicans.com.

DJ Herc co-hosted the Back To School Jam in 1973 party with his sister Cindy Campbell in the Bronx. What Herc did was ingeniously employed two turntables to manipulate an instrumental beat from James Brown’s “Sex Machine” album.

Herc would play the break on one side of the turntable and subsequently duplicate the same segment on the opposite side. Initially dubbed the “merry-go-round,” this approach eventually evolved into “breakbeat” deejaying. Following this breakthrough, he meticulously sifted through numerous crates to unearth the ideal breakbeats for the jams. Herc and the Herculoids, including Coke La Rock, the culture’s accredited first rapper, forever changed the worth by laying the foundation of Hip-Hop culture and rap culture.

In May, Campbell’s remarkable impact was acknowledged as he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame under the “Musical Influence Award” category.

Over the last five years, DaBaby captivated fans with music videos like “Suge (Yea Yea)” and “Baby Sitter” featuring Offset. Reel Goats directed both of those short films.

DaBaby also stepped behind the camera for “Ball If I Want To” and “Red Light Green Light.” The North Carolina-raised entertainer also took the production reins for a new visual from comedian/musician Lil Duval.

“Squeeze” by Lil Duval landed on August 15 with a 4:31-second video. The Jacksonville, Florida native opens the DaBaby-directed MV with a “Squeeze” Stop The Violence Banquet skit.

“Stop the violence! But keep yo fie on you cuz you neeeeeever know 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂,” wrote Lil Duval on Instagram. Three weeks ago, he posted, “New femur who dis. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Who said I won’t be able [to] drop and bounce again? 😂😂😂😂 I’m really back nih!”

Last year, Duval suffered a broken leg following a 4-wheeler accident. Prior to undergoing surgery for that injury, the former Guy Code cast member dropped the Gold-certified “Smile B####” collaboration with Snoop Dogg and Ball Greezy.

DaBaby is coming off the release of his “Shake Sumn” single from the Call da Fireman EP. “Shake Sumn” returned DaBaby to the Billboard Hot 100 chart by peaking at No. 65. A remix of the track features rising rap star Sexyy Red.

Chris Brown Announces 11-Song ’11:11′ Album

Fans of Chris Brown got some great news this week. The R&B performer announced a new album is on the way.

On August 16, Chris Brown informed his 143 million Instagram followers that a project titled 11:11 will possibly drop in November. The IG post read, “This will be my 11th album and will contain 11 songs.”

Brown’s tenth studio LP, Breezy, came out in June 2022. That project hosted 23 tracks on the standard version with another 9 tracks added to the deluxe edition. Breezy peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.

2019’s Indigo dropped as a 123-minute double album. Disc 1 comprised 15 tracks with Disc 2 consisting of another 15 tracks. Indigo debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 becoming Chris Brown’s first chart-topper since Fortune in 2012.

In addition to Fortune and Indigo, Brown scored a No. 1 entry on the Billboard 200 with F.A.M.E. in 2011. The Virginia-bred vocalist has had eleven projects land in the Billboard 200’s Top 10 region since 2005.

Chris Brown broke into the mainstream with his “Run It!” single featuring Juelz Santana. That 2005 hit rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent five weeks in the pole position. He also topped the Hot 100 with 2007’s “Kiss Kiss” featuring T-Pain.

The Indigo track “Under the Influence” broke into the Top 20 of the Hot 100 rankings, peaking at No. 12 in January. The song’s official music video racked up 184 million views on YouTube since its premiere on the platform in October 2022. Plus, “Summer Too Hot” dropped on June 23, 2023.

R&B legend Usher Raymond IV is back with a new single. “Boyfriend” arrived with a Ricky Alvarez-directed music video starring Nope actress Keke Palmer.

To promote his latest record, Usher made an appearance on Capital XTRA with Robert Bruce and Shayna Marie. One of the radio show hosts asked their guest to name his personal Hip Hop GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).

“The Notorious B.I.G. I would also say Eminem. In terms of rapport and in terms of just swag. You put on Biggie’s versus and ‘till this day they still hit as if they were just created today,” answered Usher. “His pocket, his metaphors, his story-telling, just so vivid, and just understanding what the culture is.”

Usher continued, “They haven’t really moved much more from what he was talking about back then, that lets you know that he was way ahead. In terms of one of the fastest and most credible rappers, I’d say Busta Rhymes.”

Throughout his four-decade career, Usher has collaborated with numerous rappers. Some of his biggest hits – such as “Yeah!” with Lil Jon & Ludacris and “Love In This Club” with Young Jeezy – feature Hip Hop talent.

“Boyfriend” became a trending topic on social media thanks to the inclusion of Keke Palmer as the visuals’ leading lady. Palmer made headlines after the father of her newborn chastised her behavior at Usher’s Las Vegas show.

“I think everybody’s vision or a version of what they felt happened there just leads you back to just really having a good time in Las Vegas. And that’s what I hope came out of it,” stated Usher about the Keke Palmer/Darius Jackson drama.

The 8-time Grammy winner also added, “Rather, it was a conversation of what was going on with us having fun in front of the audience or conversation about that song.”

In a very short amount of time, Bobbi Althoff has become one of the most talked about content creators on the internet. Her interviews with Hip Hop stars Drake and Lil Yachty generated headlines.

In particular, Bobbi Althoff’s recent sitdown with Lil Yachty is making the rounds online again. That episode of The Really Good Podcast amassed more than 5.3 million YouTube views since premiering on July 23.

Althoff spoke to the BFFs with Dave Portnoy, Josh Richards, and Brianna Chickenfry podcast about her encounter with Yachty. According to the TikTok personality, the initial meeting with the Atlanta rapper made her feel uneasy.

“When I walked into his house, I was so uncomfortable. It was so awkward,” said Bobbi Althoff about the meet-up with Yachty. “I walked into his house and it was super awkward because he’s really kind of awkward and I heard that going into it.”

She added, “I walked into his house and he didn’t really even say hi to me. I was like, ‘Let’s go to the bathroom.’ We go to the bathroom then we get out and he’s just sitting there with his two assistants and he’s not even acknowledging that I’m in the room.”

Bobbi Althoff went on to say a friend suggested she address the perceived awkwardness during the interview with Lil Yachty. The Really Good Podcast conversation did include Althoff and Yachty discussing the situation on camera.

In addition, Bobbi Althoff’s viral interview with Drake also generated conversation over the last several days. According to reports, Althoff and Drake unfollowed each other on Instagram. Plus, the podcast episode with the Canadian rap star has been taken down.

Entertainer/entrepreneur Jeezy (born Jay Jenkins) wrote a memoir titled Adversity for Sale: You Gotta Believe. The book covers the 45-year-old Georgia rapper’s life journey from the streets to the Billboard charts.

“Sometimes you have to go through some things – even some things that are excruciating and that you think you’ll never survive – in order to get where you want to be,” said Jenkins in a press release about Adversity for Sale. 

The Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 album creator continued, “Through this book, his goal is to give everyone from the block to the boardroom a message of hope to get through their days.” 

Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, Jeezy’s major label debut studio album, dropped in 2005. Prior to that LP coming out via Def Jam, the CTE World label founder released several projects, including 2005’s Trap or Die mixtape.

Radio personality Big Tigger of Audacy’s V-103 spoke to Jeezy to promote Adversity for Sale. The Big Tigger Morning Show conversation also featured the “Soul Survivor” hitmaker reflecting on dark periods during his life.

“My first three albums and two mixtapes, I was probably the most depressed I’d ever been in my life,” Jeezy stated on V-103. “And I didn’t even know what depression was. He also added, “For the most part, you’re thinking something’s wrong with you. You don’t know that you got all these traumas from your childhood and you’re dealing with it. Even writing the book, it was just like, ‘Oh, that’s why I react like that to that.'”

Jeezy managed to chart three albums at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 throughout his career. 2006’s Thug Motivation 102: The Inspiration, 2008’s The Recession, and 2016’s Trap or Die 3 each reached the top spot on the weekly rankings.

Lil Uzi Vert is seemingly a step close to releasing their highly anticipated Young Thug-inspired album, Barter 16. 

The Philly rapper began teasing a new album after releasing Pink Tape in June, keeping fans gripped with a steady stream of hints that new music was on the way. When the project rocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard chart, the first Hip-Hop album to do so in 2023, Lil Uzi took the opportunity to announce the upcoming arrival of Barter 16.  

“Sitting here thinking bout how I just went 1 on a experimental tape,” they wrote on Instagram last month. “My apologies. Barter 16 mixtape on the way.”  

Uzi’s parting nod to Young Thug, “Free Slime,” and the project’s title led many to theorize the tape could be an homage to Thugger’s 2015 mixtape Barter 6. 

Lil Uzi removed all doubt about the inspiration behind the music on Wednesday, sharing the album artwork on Young Thug’s birthday. The fan theories appear to be valid, as the cover is a direct replica of Thug’s Barter 6.

In an interview with GQ earlier with month, Lil Uzi revealed that they speak to Young Thug regularly. “He’s good,” they shared, despite Thug awaiting trial on RICO charges from behind bars. “He’s my OG so he’s always happy, always in good spirits with me,” Uzi explained.

Lil Yachty is catching heat over a segment from his recent interview with Sexyy Red where the “SkeeYee” hitmaker revealed she had been raped in the past. 

Sexyy Red appeared on the latest episode of the Safe Place podcast. While the interview had some funny and revealing moments, the mood quickly changed when Lil Yachty asked Sexyy Red about the craziest thing that ever happened to her. 

“I got raped before,” the St. Louis, Missouri-bred rapper replied. “That’s the craziest thing that ever happened to me.” 

After a brief stunned silence, Lil Yachty and his co-host, MitchGoneMad, awkwardly laughed and suggested Sexyy Red give another answer. When she responded, “Shootout?” Lil Yachty replied, “That’s more what we were looking for.” 

Before she could recount her story, the hosts interrupted with a clumsy apology. “We’re sorry that that happened to you,” MitchGoneMad said amid more laughter. “That is unfortunate,” Lil Yachty chimed in, before his co-host added, “That is not something we should speak on.”  

He quickly transitioned topics continuing with, “But the shootouts and stuff … wow.” 

Viewers of the podcast took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment over the segment.  

“I wish I could give her a hug after this,” read one response. “The way they dismissed her trauma and changed the topic so quickly was so uncalled for. Why is it so hard for y’all to show women especially, black women compassion?” 

Another pointed out the contradiction in the show’s name and how they treated their guest’s traumatic admission.  

“It’s not lost on me that the name of that lil yachty podcast is ‘Safe Place‘ but these mfs are laughing when Sexyy Red said she was SA’d,” one viewer shared.  

NLE Choppa Explains Meaning Behind Newborn Son’s Unique Name: “ChoZen Wone”

NLE Choppa and Marissa Da’Nae have welcomed a baby boy into the world, who they named ChoZen Wone Da’Shun Potts.  

The Memphis rapper announced the birth of his child in a social media post Wednesday (August 16). He shared a series of funny videos showing how he kept himself amused while the mother of his child was in labor.  

In one clip, he teases De’Nae while she vomits into a cup, narrating her through her nausea. In another video, NLE revealed he cut his son’s umbilical cord. 

He excused his jokes in the caption, claiming he had to make Da’Nae laugh, and also shared his newborn’s unique name. 

“ChoZen Wone Da’Shun Potts,” NLE Choppa revealed. “8/16/23. The Best Gift God Has Given This Year, Excuse My Humor She Was In Pain So I Had To Be A Comedian LOL. ALL PRAISE TO THE MOST.”

NLE Choppa followed up with a post on his Instagram Story explaining his son’s distinct name. “His name is special, spiritual and unique” the “Do It Again” hitmaker began. “ChoZen – picked by God, God’s favorite and also zenful energy.” 

He then revealed “Wone” represents his son being “the chosen ‘one’” and also that “he already ‘won” at life. “Da’Shun” is a combination of his middle name Lashun and Da’Nae’s name. “Potts” is NLE Choppa’s surname.

Bobbi Althoff Denies Wild Rumor She Slept With Drake Resulting In Her Marriage Breakdown

Drake has been dragged into the alleged marriage breakdown of podcaster Bobbi Althoff after wild speculation erupted online following their hilariously awkward viral interview. 

Althoff’s notoriety rose to new heights after she snagged Drake for just her fifth podcast episode. Clips of the interview quickly spread across social media, with viewers sharing clips of the comically cringe-worthy conversation.  

The podcaster remained in character while attending a recent Drake concert. She posted a video from the show where she stood awkwardly with her arms crossed, between two friends vibing to the music.

However, the first signs of drama began a day after sharing the concert video. Despite garnering over 10 million views on YouTube, the Drake podcast episode mysteriously disappeared. Then, eagle-eyed fans noticed the pair had also unfollowed each other on Instagram. 

Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy then drove speculation into overdrive during a recent episode of his BFF’s podcast last week. He revealed that he heard a rumor Bobbi Althoff and Drake slept together, leading her to get a divorce. “I asked her. I DMed Bobbi,” he shared. “She’s like, I’m not commenting on that publicly.” However, what he says next is bleeped, suggesting he said something he shouldn’t have.  

“Wait, so you just outed her?” his co-host asked. “You just outed her not-public comment?” 

Bobbi Althoff Shuts Down Drake Rumors

Althoff then flat-out denied the rumor in her Instagram Story Wednesday night (August 16). She shared a screenshot of a message exchange between herself and Dave Portnoy.  

“I am not commenting publicly but off the record, you’re right that is not true,” she said, responding to Portnoy’s question about hooking up with Drake.  

Althoff also added a note to the post, explaining that this is the only time she intends to address the drama.

For his part, Dave Portnoy has now apologized for posting the misleading clip.

The iconic actor has kept a relatively low profile while on the road to recovery but recently took to social media to express his profound gratitude for all the support he’s received along the way. Foxx also shared some welcome good news, updating fans about his health in an Instagram post Wednesday evening (August 16). 

“You’re lookin at a man who is thankful,” Jamie Foxx wrote alongside a series of selfies. “Finally startin to feel like myself.” 

He also admitted “it’s been an unexpected dark journey,” but says he can now “see the light.”  

Foxx continued, “I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers… I have a lot of people to thank… u just don’t know how much it meant…”

There is no official word on their relationship, but there is an unofficial word. Darius has reportedly jumped back into his acting career and left the mess behind. T.I.’s Label Grand Hustle Confirms Death Of Dopeboy Ra

Atlanta area rapper Dopeboy Ra, who was a member of T.I.’s group Hustle Gang, has died. T.I.’s Grand Hustle label mourned the late rapper in an Instagram post on Wednesday (August 16).

Associates of Dopeboy Ra, who was also known as RaRa and Young Capone, became worried about him after he reportedly went missing. Word of his death began to hit social media on Tuesday (August 15). Grand Hustle confirmed his passing in a statement on Wednesday.

“The Grand Hustle family is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of RaRa (formerly known as Young Capone),” the label announced. “We are sending our sincere condolences to his family, children, friends and the Atlanta community. Our Grand Hustle brother will truly be missed for his remarkable presence and effortless talent.”

Former Grand Hustle general manager Hannah Kang said she was “numb” after learning of Dopeboy Ra’s death. She shared a screenshot of their old messages on Instagram.

“Damn @dopeboyra going thru our random silly dms,” she wrote. “RIP … I’m numb. Too many deaths.”

Young Dro, J.I.D and many other members of the Atlanta Hip-Hop scene grieved the loss of Dopeboy Ra, whose real name was Rodriguez Smith. No cause of death has been revealed.

YNW Melly Wants Out Of Jail Ahead Of Second Murder Trial

YNW Melly’s lawyers asked a Florida judge to release him from jail while he waits for his retrial in a double murder case. According to NBC Miami, attorneys filed a motion for a bond hearing on Tuesday (August 15).

The rapper’s legal team argued for his release by citing the judge’s decision to grant bond to his co-defendant YNW Bortlen. Lawyers said the judge has the power to grant bond to their client even though he is charged with non-bondable offenses.

YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, has remained in jail since his 2019 arrest. Authorities charged him with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors accuse the 24-year-old artist of killing his friends YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser in 2018. YNW Melly will be retried for the murders after his first trial ended in a mistrial.

The original trial began in June. Jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict after listening to several weeks of testimony. Judge John Murphy declared a mistrial in July.

YNW Melly’s second trial is scheduled to start on October 9. His alleged accomplice YNW Bortlen will be tried separately.

Prosecutors claim YNW Bortlen helped YNW Melly stage a drive-by shooting to cover up the murders. Both men pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges.

Doja Cat Looks At Branching Out Into Acting And Stand-Up Comedy

Doja Cat thought about taking a break from music to explore acting or stand-up comedy. The pop star revealed her desire to try different creative outlets in an interview with Angie Martinez for Harper’s Bazaar.

“I would love to do movies that I believe in,” she said. “I would have to stop the music for a minute. But I would be down to immerse myself in acting for a certain period of time. I love comedies and action films. I want to learn martial arts and be in a film like John Wick.”

Doja Cat mentioned clothing and makeup as other potential projects beyond music. She also confirmed her interest in doing stand-up comedy.

“It’s something I’ve definitely considered,” Doja Cat told Martinez. “I actually went onstage recently with Craig Robinson. He’ll get on a piano and just play songs, but he’ll do it in his own Craig Robinson, funny-ass way. I went up onstage and sang with him at a comedy club. It was super low-key. I was there with one of my boyfriends.”

Later this year, Doja Cat plans to release a new album titled Scarlet. She said the project is “more introspective” but features a “nice mixture” of “stories and bops.”

Either Elon Musk has decided to fully lean into the “Big Brother” dystopian tech company stereotype at Twitter (X) full force, or there’s just some suspect new world order s### going on.

Whichever it is, Musk, Twitter (X) and the whole team of feds presumably working over there at Twitter-turned-tyranny, got me all the way f###ed up if they think I’m uploading my government ID directly to a social media app.

While it appears the new ID Verification feature coming to Twitter (X) will allow users to verify their account by uploading photos of their identification to the app, it seems like no one really knows if it’s going to be mandatory to keep your profile or just for verification purposes when applying for a blue check. There’s one rumor circulating though—accounts will apparently receive a special “ID Verified” badge once they have submitted identification.

I can’t lie; this just feels wrong. It’s like when life imitates art, but the art depicts a weird advanced society where the government and major corporations have both the ability to grotesquely infringe on privacy rights and make a profit from the exploitation of the lack of one’s peace. I’m really out here contemplating being on my J Kwon “Tipsy” vibes and hollering “Yo I got a fake ID tho” when the Twitter (X) ID police come knocking on my door.

Willie D Reveals True Feelings On Repairing Relationship With Scarface After Grammys Snub

Willie D discussed the state of his relationship with fellow Geto Boys member Scarface on the AllHipHop podcast. The veteran rapper admitted he’s still upset with Scarface for doing a solo performance of the Geto Boys song “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” at the 2023 Grammys Awards.

“When Geto Boys have an opportunity to perform at the Grammys and only one-half performs and makes the decision to do it all by himself, then I gotta take exception to that,” Willie D told AllHipHop’s Chuck Creekmur and DJ Thoro. “Especially when I’m the other half.”

He added, “It was a major slap in the face. For all these people that’s running they mouth and saying, ‘Ah, get over it,’ and da-da-da and, ‘Oh but it was still a good look,’ f### you! Real talk, f### you in your ass.”

Scarface performed the Geto Boys classic as part of a Hip-Hop 50 medley at the Grammys. Willie D’s absence led to a heated argument between the two on a February episode of their Geto Boys Reloaded podcast.

Months later, Willie D remained frustrated. He explained why a simple apology cannot fix the situation.

“[Scarface] said [I should’ve been there], but he said it in a condescending manner,” he said. “And it wasn’t sincere. But I’ma tell you the truth bro. Even if he had [apologized], I still wouldn’t have accepted it ‘cause I knew that it was intentional. So, I don’t accept it when it’s intentional.”

Willie D was asked if there was anything Scarface could do to mend their relationship. The answer might worry Geto Boys fans.

“I don’t know right now,” Willie D said. “Time is a good start.”

EST Gee A Quantum Physics Savant? We’ll Never Know After He Ditched Bootleg Kev Interview

EST Gee could be the most interesting man in the world, but it’s more likely he’s the most impatient. Fans of the CMG signee certainly found the latter to be true this week after a clip of EST Gee allegedly walking out of a podcast interview went viral. It’s unclear at the moment what triggered the Kentucky native’s silent walk-off. The clip currently circulating appears to show EST Gee becoming visibly frustrated after being bombarded with questions about his past experiences as a star student and athlete.

However, walking down memory lane isn’t what set it off. Apparently, the clip itself was proof that his actions were warranted. EST Gee, who eviscerated the podcast host in an Instagram Story post because he essentially “tried it” with him, alleges the interview wasn’t even filmed less than two hours prior to the clip being released. The 29-year-old also claimed it was useless banter about pornstars and aliens that forced his hand to leave the podcast midway through the conversation.

“@bootlegkev You tryna play it like I walked out cause of football like [I] ain’t did plenty interviews talking about playing and talk about it in my music,” EST Gee wrote. “You asking me if I remembered an old man pornstar. If I believe in aliens and the NFL combine????? WTF do that got to do with my album dropping Friday? And I literally just walked out that interview 2 hours ago you already got a clip up??? You tryna go viral LOL 100. I got real life s### going [on] ask around Ion feel like playing so please don’t play wit me cause I play crazy.”

On the flip side of things, EST Gee reportedly arrived at least 90 minutes late to the interview and was never engaged in the conversation in the first place, according to the host.

And get this, EST Gee’s team reportedly told the host that he was interested in topics such as the Universe and Quantum Physics and didn’t want to do a regular promotional interview focused on his upcoming El Toro 2 project.

While there’s no telling who’s really right or wrong in this one, EST Gee surely is getting a load of free promo from the entire moment, as is the platform. Everybody eats B—or so to speak.
