Meek Mill Claims Michael Rubin Spoke Up About Black Culture Where Black Men Fell Silent

Meek Mill is weighing in on Michael Rubin’s controversial remarks about Black culture amid the backlash. 

The Fanatics founder faced intense criticism over his comments in a recent interview. Although he has since apologized after being checked by a friend, Meek Mill said Michael Rubin has a point.  

The Philly rapper took to X (Twitter) on Thursday evening (August 15) to address the topic. Although he conceded that his co-chair at The REFORM Alliance shouldn’t have voiced his opinion “out loud,” he insisted the substance of his remarks was accurate. Moreover, Meek claims Rubin said what Black men have failed to express.  

“Rubin shouldn’t be saying that type stuff out loud,” Meek began. “Black man suppose to but nobody saying it…. Its like we only collab on songs women and parties… he be hearing my friends getting murdered like why meek, I can’t explain it to him in a sensible way!” 

However, his statements divided opinion, with some claiming Rubin was justified in voicing his opinion. Others called Meek out for failing to explain the wider issues to his friend.  

“Explain systematic racism to him,” one person replied, adding, “How Philly schools are underfunded. How kids don’t have things to do. How the media you contribute to glorifies that life.” 

Another person added, “Structural racism and poverty are great places to start. Please do not perpetuate the notion that Black people are inherently at conflict. This is a part of the delusion that white supremacy incites!!!!”

Schoolboy Q Reacts

Schoolboy Q also shared his objections, slamming the “Black on Black hate” narrative. 

“NO SUCH THING AS BLACK ON BLACK ANYTHING,” he declared. “WTF.”

During his interview on The Breakfast Club, Rubin, who is Jewish, discussed his concerns with so-called “Black on Black hate.”

However, he later walked back his statements amid the backlash. According to Rubin, a respected friend told him “it’s not my place to speak on Black culture.” 

Kendrick Lamar Overtakes Archenemy Drake in Latest Spotify Numbers

The old rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has a long back story that goes back more than 12 years. Today, the two former friends are still battling each other for fans, making subtle references to each other in their music. 

It’s safe to say that they hate each other, but this was not always the case. Let’s dive into the Drake-Lamar controversy and look at why Lamar has recently bested his archenemy, according to Spotify’s latest stats.

Spotify Speaks for Itself 

Spotify allows artists of all kinds to share their music on the platform, making no distinction between those who have record deals with music agents and those who choose to remain independent. A Spotify promotion allows aspiring musicians to make a name for themselves starting from scratch, leaving the judgment of what good music is to the listeners who have the app. 

And the people have indeed spoken. As per Spotify’s latest statistics, Lamar has a larger audience than Drake! The rivalry between these two very different hip-hop artists has culminated in a perceived win for Lamar, giving him a massive foothold to possibly win the Song of Summer award later this year.  

Their Rivalry in a Nutshell 

Lamar and Drake started out as friends back in 2011, with Drake, in a sense, taking Lamar under his wing and even featuring him in one of his tracks. But two years later, fans started to debate which of the two was better. 

This resulted in a more competitive relationship between the two, which was exasperated by ‘dissing’ in interviews. It wasn’t long before comments began to be included in each of their respective lyrics, which announced a full-on rivalry between the two artists. 

The Difference in Their Music

It should be noted that Drake and Kendrick Lamar have two very different styles of music creation. Drake is known for his ‘high life’ lyrics, emphasizing money, cars, and living like a rich and famous person. Kendrick Lamar (known as the artist who saved hip hop) raps about where he came from, his humble beginnings, and the brutality of life. 

Hip-hop fans relate more to Lamar because his music avoids the commercialization of hip-hop and focuses more on the roots thereof. Whichever one you prefer, it isn’t surprising that Spotify shows a larger fan base for Lamar as opposed to the ever-declining audience of Drake. For some, the music of both artists is good and they are unaware of the past rivalry between these two. But for true hip-hop fans, this beef is just another in a long line of hip-hop history rivalries. 

Hip Hop as a ‘Beef’ Platform 

Although this rivalry between Drake and Lamar is officially said to be over, there have been some lasting effects on Drake as an artist. We only need to look at some of the past hip-hop rivalries to see that, in some cases, the rivalry itself lended to the popularity of both artists involved.

These rivalries were excellent publicity campaigns for the artists involved, and many of them resulted in a soap opera of drama that translated to higher album sales. But for Drake, this rivalry has visibly hurt his career, because the respective music styles of these two artists are so different and evidently oppose each other. 

How Has This Affected Drake’s Career? 

Despite these statistics, Drake seems determined to win the Song of Summer award with one of his two latest releases. ‘Sideways’ and ‘Healing’ have recently taken the world by storm, and only time will tell if either of them will trump Lamar’s releases.

Drake has been visibly affected by this beef between himself and Kendrick Lamar and has lost many of his loyal fans. Today is the start of his decline in music sales as his older hits make way for newer ones released by Lamar.

Snoop Dogg was a highlight of the 2024 Paris Olympics and rumored to have earned an eye-watering amount for his coverage of the Games. 

While the initial $500,000 a day plus expenses speculation was unconfirmed, Snoop Dogg appears to have corroborated the figure. 

On Thursday evening (August 15), the West Coast rap icon re-shared a video praising him for bringing eyes to the event. The clip also labeled Snoop the “main star” of the Games and justified his staggering daily fee, claiming he earned “nearly $9 million” but increased viewership by a whopping 79 percent. 

“Snoop also lives and parties in Paris for free, all to bring more attention to the Olympics,” the caption read. “Almost every top broadcast features Snoop. He attends all major Olympic events. For 17 Olympic days, he’ll earn nearly $9 million.”

NBC hired Snoop Dogg as a primetime correspondent and credited the rapper with helping boost ratings. An average of 34 million daily viewers tuned in for the first five days, up 79 percent from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, according to an NBC Sports release.  

Snoop Dogg was a mainstay of the Games, from carrying the Olympic torch through Paris to closing out the handover ceremony with Dr. Dre. His unique commentary, sideline antics and hilarious segments went viral throughout the event.

Dr. Dre recently gave Snoop his flowers following their performance of “The Next Episode” at the closing event.  

“Really, Snoop, he’s the superstar,” Dr. Dre said. “I’m the co-star when we get on stage. It’s different when we’re in the studio, you know? I’m the captain when we’re in the studio, but when we go outside, Snoop is the guy.”

Aussie “B-Girl” Digs Deeper Hole With Olympics Defense: “I Gave My All”

Macquarie University lecturer and part-time breaker Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, who ignited a firestorm of controversy with her 2024 Paris Olympics performance, addressed the backlash in an Instagram video on Thursday (August 15).

While she took a moment to acknowledge the people who’ve been supportive in the wake of her viral routine, she soon focused on the negativity that’s been funneled her way ever since.

“I just want to start by thanking all the people who have supported me. I really appreciate the positivity and I’m glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives,” she began. “I didn’t realize that that would also open the door to so much hate, which has frankly been pretty devastating.”

Gunn also insisted she wasn’t competing as some kind of troll job or a social experiment as many have suspected online. She continued: “While I went out there and I had fun, I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics and I gave my all. Truly.”

Toward the end of the clip, Gunn begged the press for privacy and asked for her circle to be left alone. She added, “I’m going to be in Europe for a few weeks for some pre-planned downtime but I’d really like to ask the press to please stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian breaking community, and the broader street dance community. Everyone has been through a lot as a result of this, so I ask you to please respect their privacy.”

But Gunn’s explanation was quickly picked apart, with many confused by her lack of accountability. They were also surprised she didn’t offer a simple apology for what many believe (including the judges) was a subpar performance. The comment section lit up with reactions like, “Nice try but obviously you haven’t accepted what you did” and “I think people would respect you more if you just owned up to your performance ..rather than defending just own up to the fact that hey, maybe you weren’t prepared and shouldn’t have been at the Olympics.”

Other comments included, “Playing the victim card…… just apologize on how bad you were and prob gain more respect” and “What a lack of honest self reflection. Pretty childish.”

One person really laid it out with, “I do not hate you but I stand by my right to criticize your selection and this performance. You have to own up to a bad result. Your response is narcissistic. Please try to be humble and accept that a lot of people felt you did not represent this country as best you could or better than other breakdancers.

“I don’t agree with a petition however I believe your response to criticism is causing so much angst. Is it not possible for you to say your performance was not good because you received no points? I believe your response to criticism is causing people to feel you think you are beyond criticism. And no one is. I believe you are playing he victim in this.”

The petition the person mentioned is in reference to a since-deleted Change.Org petition that was launched to hold Gunn and Anna Meares “accountable for unethical conduct.” Addressed to Anthony Albanese, the petition argued that the inclusion of Gunn and the green-lighting of her performance at the Games raises serious concerns about the integrity of the selection procedure. The petition alleged that Gunn manipulated the selection process to her own advantage, arguing that more talented and qualified breakdancers such as “G Clef” and “Holy Molly” were unfairly overlooked.

“We demand a public apology from Rachel Gunn and Anna Mears for misleading the Australian public and attempting to gaslight the public and undermining the efforts of genuine athletes,” it read. “We also call for a full investigation into the selection process, an audit of Dr. Gunn’s business dealings, and a global public apology to the breaking community for the unethical behavior that has tainted this sport.

“Rachel Gunn’s lack of ethics and morals raises serious concerns about her fitness to teach and hold any position of authority in the sport or university. Australia must do better by its athletes and ensure that the principles of fairness, transparency, and integrity are upheld in all aspects of Olympic selection.”

Houston Rap Community Mourns After BeatKing’s Manager Confirms His Death

Houston rapper BeatKing, who was the voice behind the viral songs “Then Leave” and “Thick,” has died. His manager, Tasha Felder, confirmed the news in an Instagram post on Thursday (August 15).

“Today August 15, 2024 we have lost @clubgodzilla. BeatKing has been the best part of the club for over a decade,” she wrote. “He has produced and worked with so many artists, that his sound will forever live. He loved his daughters @clubgodparenting, his music and his fans. We will love him forever.” She added in the caption, “Forever,” alongside a black heart emoji.

Bun B, UGK legend and a pillar of the Houston rap community, expressed his condolences on Instagram. He wrote, “It’s always the good ones. Damn this s### hurt. Just a great spirited person. We lost a talented artist and father. Prayer for @talameshia and his loved ones. RIP @clubgodzilla.” His post elicited a flood of reactions from his peers, including Hi-Tik, Skratch Bastid, Goodie Mob’s Big Gipp, Three 6 Mafia, Buckshotz, Juicy J and Young Noble

BeatKing, whose real name is Justin Riley, was a rapper, producer and DJ. He emerged in the early 2010s and is known for his high-energy, bass-heavy music that often features humorous, raunchy lyrics. BeatKing’s style is heavily influenced by Houston’s club culture and Southern Hip-Hop and he often incorporates themes of nightlife, strip clubs and party life into his music.

BeatKing gained significant attention with his breakout mixtape Club God, which led to the popular “Club God” series. One of his most well-known tracks is “Throw Dat Ahh,” a hit in the club scene. Over the years, BeatKing has collaborated with various artists, including DJ Chose, Queendom Come and the late Gangsta Boo. In addition to his solo work, BeatKing is recognized for his work as a producer, having crafted beats for various artists and projects.

LaRussell Reveals Russ Offered Him His First Deal Ever: “That Was The Best Situation”

LaRussell has revealed that Russ was the first person to offer him a real record deal, and credited his fellow rap peer for jumpstarting his incredible independent run while also giving him his flowers.

In a recent Instagram post, the Vallejo-bred MC interviewed himself for his platform The Good Compenny, and spoke about how instrumental Russ was in the early stages of his career. Though the video is brief, matter of factly, less than a minute long, it packs a major amount of context and high level music industry knowlege in a short amount of time. In short, LaRussell explains why the deal, which was formated with a six-figure advance, made the most sense due to the terms he and Russ aggred to for the one-of-a-kind contract.

“RUSS GAVE ME MY FIRST RECORD DEAL,” LaRussell said. “Shoutout to @russ for being a real one. He gave me a deal very early and capital to build while remaining completely independent!”

In the video, LaRussell explains that while the deal offered him $200,000 total, with a $100,000 advance, it was only a one album deal which he was allowed to produce independently up until the release of the project. This advantage was major for him and something he admits he used to leverage framework he already had in place while reaping the benefits of the deal.

“I was able to build a catalog of 30+ albums that I own completely while in the deal,” he said. “He didn’t give me no handouts and I still had to grind my ass off to get here but he respected and valued what I was building and remained supportive.”

LaRussell concluded, “There’s not many white men in this industry that I trust. RUSS IS AN EXCEPTION.”

Russ quickly caught wind of LaRussell’s shoutout and obliged by letting him know in the comments section of the post that they were on the same page.

“Last sentence ultra real was a no brainer to help out,” Russ wrote. “Gave money and got out the way and let you do you.”

It’s likely that the amicable terms of his deal with Russ influenced LaRussell to turn down his deal with Def Jam last year. Either that, or it could’ve influenced his decision to do a deal with Live Nation, per his announcement last November.

A$AP Bari Claims He Created A$AP Mob But Was Never Compensated

A$AP Rocky is facing criticism from his formed close associate A$AP Bari, who’s claiming he was never properly compensated for his contribution to the collective.

In an explosive Instagram Story thread, Bari went off on several topics, including his alleged purchase more than two years ago of a limited edition Virgil Abloh-designed Mercedes-Benz Maybach he says has yet to be released. For a moment, the Vlone brand creator focused his frustrations on the A$AP Mob, revealing he started the imprint but has allegedly never benefited monetarily from its popularity.

“It’s so crazy I’ve been broke my whole life,” A$AP Bari wrote in the story. “I started A$AP Mob and never received a check for something I put together and with that being said, Rocky had millions and I’ve never asked him for a damn thing. All I did was set back and waited my turn, and I thank God very blessed to live the life I live and have the chance to provide for my family.”

Bari further distanced himself from Rocky and the wealth he created by naming individuals he feels were his only supporters when he was down on his luck.

“So with that being said no man asked me for s##t because when I was broke down sad and broke the only n###as that had my back was @chebrabi and @jiggytheo no bap,” he wrote in a follow-up story. I’ve changed a lot of n###as lives for free.”

While the extent of the rift between A$AP Bari and Rocky is currently somewhat obscured, the pair of ASAP Mobsters have certainly become at odds in the past. Sexyy Red isn’t sure how to define her relationship with Chief Keef, but she’s not closing the doors on a potential romance between the two. The polarizing rapper discussed her bond with Chief Keef on GRM Daily’s Thoughts in a Culli.

“It’s genuine,” she said. “That’s my peoples. That’s my dog. Like ion got too many homeboys that I can sit on the phone with. And I’m not even saying that’s my homeboy ’cause I don’t know what we got going on. We like each other. Sexyy Red was asked if she and Chief Keef “like like” each other.

Chief Keef and Sexyy Red sparked dating rumors with their flirtatious interactions in June. Sexyy Red described Chief Keef as her “brother” when the speculation first began. Later, she seemingly started competing with King Von’s sister Kayla B for Chief Keef’s affection on social media.

Diddy Accuser Lil Rod Pops Out At 50 Cent’s Festival

Uncle Murda crossed paths with Lil Rod, the producer suing Diddy for $30 million, at 50 Cent’s Humor & Harmony Weekend in Shreveport, Louisiana. Uncle Murda shared a clip of his interaction with Lil Rod on Thursday (August 15).

“I ran into the n#### that accused Diddy of all that weird s### #TheProducer,” Uncle Murda wrote on Instagram. “Homie want his money by Monday. Everybody was outside Humor & Harmony Vibes Whoaaaaaa S### Crazy #NoDiddy.

Lil Rod, whose real name is Rodney Jones, spoke briefly in Uncle Murda’s video.

“I’m from Chicago,” Lil Rod said. “We don’t play about our business.”

Lil Rod filed a bombshell lawsuit against Diddy in February. The producer said he was sexually assaulted, drugged and forced to solicit sex workers, among other claims, during his time working for Diddy.

Lil Rod accused Diddy of leading a “widespread and dangerous criminal sex trafficking organization.” Lil Rod also claimed Diddy had damning footage of various celebrities and power players who attended the disgraced mogul’s “freak-off” parties.

“While living and traveling with Mr. Combs, Mr. Jones discovered that Mr. Combs has hidden cameras in every room of his homes,” Lil Rod’s lawyer wrote. “Mr. Jones believes that Mr. Combs has recordings of Defendants Lucian Charles Grainge, Ethiopia Habtemariam, as well as other celebrities, music label executives, politicians, and athletes … Mr. Combs possesses compromising footage of every person that has attended his freak-off parties and his house parties.”

Diddy is under federal investigation for allegations of sex trafficking. Homeland Security raided his homes in March, but he hasn’t been charged with any crimes thus far.

Lil Rod was just one of the many people who sued Diddy for sexual assault over the past year. Diddy’s legal woes began when his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura sued him for rape and years of abuse in November 2023. The two quickly settled out of court, but more women filed lawsuits in subsequent weeks and months.

Diddy maintains his innocence.

Ice Cube Pivots To Tournament Idea After FIBA Blocks BIG3 Game With Gold Medalists

Ice Cube hasn’t given up on arranging a game between his BIG3 All-Stars and the Netherlands’ 3×3 Basketball Team, which won the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. The BIG3 co-founder said his $250,000 cash prize offer remains on the table if FIBA allows the game to happen on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show.

The Hip-Hop legend previously accused FIBA of blocking the Netherlands from competing against the BIG3 All-Stars. The gold medalists accepted his challenge, but FIBA said no to the proposed game. FIBA’s rejection didn’t deter Ice Cube, who pushed back against the organization and pitched a more elaborate tournament idea.

“FIBA’s scared without a doubt,” Ice Cube said. “They came with some technicality that they needed a three-week notice. 10 days is enough to figure out if you want to do it or not. And so they blew a huge opportunity for these guys and for our guys and for sports fans and for the game of three-on-three. It would’ve got so much attention. So, we still got the money up. It’s like let’s give ‘em more than three weeks so they don’t have no excuses. And they can send a few more teams. We can have a BIG Cup. We can have a little tournament to see who’s the best in the world for real, for real.”

The BIG3 championship game will be held in Boston on August 18. Ice Cube expressed interest in creating a World Cup-style tournament after the season ends.

“We wide open to create this BIG Cup tournament where we invite the best three-on-three teams in the world to come play,” he told McAfee. “Why not? Let’s do it … Let’s elevate the sport of three-on-three. Let’s get some attention of the world on the style of play. I think it’s a great idea. Let’s make it happen.”

Ice Cube launched his BIG3 basketball league in 2017. He hoped BIG3 players would be involved in the 2028 Olympics.

Michael Rubin Responds To Backlash Over His Comments About Black Culture

Fanatics founder Michael Rubin apologized for his criticism of Black culture following a controversial appearance on The Breakfast Club. The REFORM Alliance co-chair received a reality check from someone he respects, which made him reconsider voicing his opinion on issues in the Black community.

“I got a phone call from one of the people I have the most respect for in the world,” Rubin wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “They told me while they appreciate my intention, it’s not my place to speak on Black culture. I get it and really appreciate the input! My intention was to say how important it is that we need to uplift each other, stop hate on each other, and push each other to win, and always root for each other’s success! My bad, Much love and appreciate the feedback @breakfastclubam @djenvy @cthagod @LorenLorosa.”

Rubin, who is Jewish, discussed his concerns with so-called “Black on Black hate” during his Breakfast Club interview. The topic of conversation emerged when Rubin defended his friend Meek Mill, questioning why the rapper faced malicious rumors about his sexuality.

“It’s the one thing I’ve learned about Black culture that I don’t like is that Black hate on hate,” Rubin said. “It’s horrible …. I think there’s a little bit of Black culture, it’s Black hate on hate. It’s like that Black judge that Meek had that hated on him and wanted to go extra hard on him. It’s what people always say to me, it’s Black hate on hate. So, I think it’s terrible. I think it’s something that—it’s culturally wrong and I’ll probably get killed for saying this … I think it’s wrong.”

Rubin’s remarks were met with mixed reactions. ScHoolboy Q was one of the many people upset with Rubin for pushing the “Black on Black hate” narrative. Others believed Rubin made valid points, accusing critics of focusing on the messenger instead of the message.

Megan Thee Stallion Still Gets Nervous Over Beyoncé Despite “Savage” Collab

Megan Thee Stallion admitted she’s still awestruck by Beyoncé despite developing a working relationship with the superstar. Megan discussed her adoration of Beyoncé in a conversation with GloRilla on Instagram’s Close Friends Only podcast.

“Talking about Beyoncé still makes me nervous,” the Houston Hottie told GloRilla. “Like Beyoncé is really like Beyoncé. Like Beyoncé!?! GloRilla said she met Beyoncé twice. The Memphis-bred rapper told Megan she felt scared both times.

Megan was unable to recall the first time she met Beyoncé.

“I couldn’t even tell you when was the first time,” Megan said. “Oh my God. Because I just feel like I’m so cool now because I feel like I’ve seen Beyoncé a few times [laughs].”

She added, “You cannot talk ill about Beyoncé in front of me because b####, you might not make it out. ‘Cause if you talk bad about Beyoncé, you’re really just a hater. You’re really a hating ass hoe.”

Beyoncé jumped on the remix of Megan’s single “Savage” in 2020. Beyoncé’s appearance helped “Savage” become Megan’s first No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.

Last year, Beyoncé and Megan performed “Savage” together at the former’s Renaissance Tour stop in Houston. Megan told fans she was “ugly crying” the whole weekend of the show, noting how much it meant for her to share the stage with Beyoncé.

Post Malone Faces Fierce Backlash Over “Culture Vulture” Complaints

Post Malone is being called out after complaining that being labelled a culture vulture early in his career drove him to drink. 

During a sit-down with CBS Sunday Morning earlier this week to promote his country music album, F-1 Trillion, Post Malone said the allegations “sucked,” adding that he was “a kid” at the time. Post claimed he “drank a lot” to cope with being called a culture vulture and would take it personally. “It’s hard not to,” he explained. 

However, Hip-Hop heads fired back at the 29-year-old singer who was propelled into the spotlight with his breakthrough single “White Iverson” in 2015. After the interview, critics rushed to social media to call out Post Malone and dismiss his grievances.  

Social Media Reacts

“Post Malone crying about being called a culture vulture is so funny,” one person wrote. “Cuz he literally came into the game with braids and a grill, made an album, then poopooed on the genre before leaving to make country lmao.” 

One person replied, noting Post Malone, “Had braids, put on a grill, called himself the white Allen Iverson, then said he wasn’t a rapper.” They added, “The only reason I don’t think Post Malone’s a p############ is that he admitted to catfishing the black community and hip hop to sell records in 2020.” 

A third user shared a quote from an interview with a Polish outlet that sparked harsh criticism for suggesting that contemporary Hip-Hop lacked emotional range.  

The critic claimed Post Malone “took a fast lane to success profiting of black people.” 

“If you’re looking to cry, if you’re looking to think about life, don’t listen to hip-hop,” Post said in 2017. “There’s great hip-hop songs where they talk about life and they really spit that real s###, but right now, you know, there’s not a lot of people talking about s###.”

Sexyy Red Addresses Industry Plant Rumors

Sexyy Red is opening up about rumors that she is an industry plant following her rapid rise in the music business. 

During a recent interview with the U.K.’s GRM Daily CEO, Post asked the St. Louis native to address critics’ accusations that she is an industry plant.  

After clarifying the meaning of the term, Sexyy Red acknowledged she’s heard comments that she is forced upon the masses. While she admits that she never envisioned becoming a rapper, she insists all her support is genuine. 

“They be thinking that s### is promo,” she said, implying her critics believe she pays to be in the spotlight. “This is free. I’m not paying no promo.”  

According to Sexyy Red, she gets publicity because of the interest she attracts and not because she’s an industry plant.“They know every time I get posted it’s going to go up,” she stated. “Cuz they know somebody going to talk some s###.”

Meanwhile, last September, Sexyy Red responded to a tweet accusing leading Black women astray.

Kanye West’s Wife Dons Skimpy Dress With Rapper’s Kids, Kim Kardashian “Alarmed”

Jaden Smith Sparks Viral Cheating Rumors After Steamy PDA With IG Model
