Mary J. Blige, Lil Tjay, Kendrick Lamar & Migos Make Google’s Top Trending Musicians List For 2022

Global search engine juggernaut Google released its annual “Year In Search” data. The 2022 edition for the United States features names like Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar.

Mary J. Blige landed at #2 in the Musicians and Bands category for 2022. The undisputed Queen of Hip Hop Soul released her Grammy-nominated Good Morning Gorgeous album in February.

Additionally, Blige performed as part of the Emmy-winning Super Bowl LVI halftime show. She also received the Billboard Icon Award this year. Plus, Time named MJB as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

New York City-based rapper Lil Tjay came in at #3 for the top trending Musicians and Bands searches in the United States. The Columbia recording artist made headlines after being shot during an attempted robbery in June. Tjay had to dispel rumors he suffered paralysis from the incident.

Kendrick Lamar followed Lil Tjay at #4 on Google’s Musicians and Bands list. The pgLang founder dropped his chart-topping Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers studio LP in May. Lamar also embarked on The Big Steppers Tour.

Migos rounded out the Top 5 at #5. 2022 has been a difficult year for the rap group. Speculation that the trio of Offset, Quavo, and Takeoff split up dominated a lot of the conversation surrounding Migos for months. Then tragedy struck when a gunman killed Takeoff on November 1 in Houston.

Rapper/actor Will Smith place second in Google’s Top Trending People section behind fellow movie star Johnny Depp. Media outlets fixated on Smith following his infamous “Oscar Slap” at the 94th Academy Awards.

Before winning Best Actor for King Richard, Will Smith smacked Chris Rock in the face on stage in response to Rock joking about the bald head of Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Chris Rock placed seventh on the 2022 People list.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) finished as the #1 song for Google’s “Year In Search” results for 2022. The album’s “Surface Pressure” occupies the runner-up position.

Encanto was the #1 movie. Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine was the #1 musician. Euphoria was the #1 television show. Antonio Brown was the #1 athlete. Philadelphia Phillies were the #1 sports team. Wordle was the overall top trending search for the year.

Google bases its “Year In Search” information in the United States on queries that had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2022 as compared to 2021. The provided data does not reflect the “most searched” or “top searches” for the time period.

Tory Lanez Settles Alleged Assault Cases Involving ‘Love & Hip Hop’ Star Prince

It has already been a newsworthy week for Daystar “Tory Lanez” Peterson. As his felony assault case in California heads to trial, the Canadian rapper/singer reportedly closed out another serious legal situation.

RadarOnline reports Tory Lanez reached a financial settlement with Love & Hip Hop: Miami star Christopher Michael “Prince” Harty. Apparently, the agreement is part of an attempt by Lanez’s new legal team to avoid that case going to court.

Back in August, attorney Christopher E. Ells withdrew himself as Tory Lanez’s legal counsel in the Prince Harty civil case. Ells cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason to part ways with the “Say It” performer.

Prince accused Lanez of attacking him at Miami Beach’s Vendôme Club in 2020. That allegation came after the self-described Prince of South Beach claimed he needed teeth surgery as a result of an altercation with Lanez at LIV nightclub in November 2019.

“Last night our security broke up an altercation between Love and Hip Hop’s Prince and Tory Lanez. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and both parties were immediately asked to leave the venue,” read a statement from LIV management.

As a result of those incidents, Prince sought unspecified damages by suing Tory Lanez for physical, psychological, and mental distress. Lanez initially insisted any actions against the reality show star/party promoter were done in self-defense.

Multiple People Have Accused Tory Lanez Of Violent Behavior

Despite apparently settling his legal issues with Prince in recent days, Tory Lanez still faces around 23 years in prison if a jury convicts him of shooting Megan Thee Stallion. That assault/firearm trial will likely begin in California on December 12.

In addition, R&B singer August Alsina alleged Tory Lanez also struck him backstage at the Fall Back In Love Comedy & Music Jam tour in September. At first, Lanez suggested he was in a recording studio at the time of the supposed attack. However, video footage showed Alsina and Lanez together at the location on that night.

Tory Lanez continues to portray a positive outlook about his pending legal troubles. Attorney George Mgdesyan expressed confidence that his client will not be convicted of allegedly shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Lanez also recently tweeted, “No weapon formed against me shall prosper… EVER.”

DDG Sparks Debate By Declaring YouTubers Make More Money Than Rappers

Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr. went from being a popular YouTube content creator to a Platinum-certified recording artist. The 25-year-old entertainer, better known as DDG, believes one profession is more lucrative than the other.

“[Not gonna lie]… YouTubers/streamers make more money than rappers and it’s not even close,” tweeted DDG on Tuesday evening. That post collected over 28,000 likes on Twitter.

It seems the Pontiac, Michigan native got some pushback on that take about YouTube money versus Hip Hop money. Around four hours later, he returned to Twitter to shame his less wealthy critics.

“I ain’t arguing [with] no n#### I’m richer than… lol you got it, lil bro, 😂,” wrote the former  Central Michigan University student. Around 4,000 users pushed the like button for that particular tweet.

KSI Backs Up DDG’s Rapping Vs Streaming Take

DDG did get a co-sign from fellow YouTuber/rapper Olajide Olayinka Williams “JJ” Olatunji aka KSI. The London-born Atlantic Records signee offered his own comparison between rapping, streaming, and boxing.

“YouTube/Streaming = most money, Music = most respect mainstream wise, Boxing = most respect online wise,” offered KSI in the replies to DDG’s original tweet about YouTubers versus rappers.

KSI has competed in several professional boxing matches, including a famous 2019 victory over YouTuber Logan Paul. DDG also stepped into the ring in 2021 to defeat TikTok star Nate Wyatt in an amateur bout at the “Social Gloves: Battle of the Platforms” event.

Top Hip Hop Stars Reportedly Make More Money Than Top YouTube Stars

According to reports, MrBeast ranked as the highest-paid YouTuber of 2021 by earning an estimated $54 million that year. The Paul brothers also made the Top 10 list with Jake Paul racking up $45 million for a #2 ranking. Logan Paul landed at #9 with $18 million.

In comparison, Hip Hop legend Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter made an estimated $470 million in 2021. The Roc Nation boss topped a list that also featured Kanye West ($250 million), Diddy ($75 million), and Drake ($50 million).

DDG launched his main YouTube channel in 2014. As of press time, the PontiacMadeDDG page has collected over 3 million subscribers and 471 million views. His official music channel arrived on the platform in 2017.

Since crossing over to the music space, DDG managed to earn RIAA plaques for 2018’s “Arguments” as well as 2020’s “Moonwalking in Calabasas” featuring Blueface. His discography also contains the Epic Records-released Valedictorian and It’s Not Me It’s You albums.

Keke Palmer Fires Back At Commenters Calling Her Ugly

Keke Palmer is experiencing a superstar-making rise at the moment. Her role in Jordan Peele’s Nope has garnered industry award consideration, and her baby bump reveal on Saturday Night Live became a trending topic.

Apparently, there are some people on social media that choose to focus on negativity when it comes to the 29-year-old actress/singer. Keke Palmer had to address any haters that took shots at her appearance.

“I just saw a few comments of [people] saying I was ugly ’cause I wasn’t wearing any makeup. And I really want y’all to get the help y’all need because makeup isn’t real. I’m beautiful in real life, because of who I am, not what I look like,” tweeted Palmer on Tuesday.

The So Uncool album creator also tweeted, “I wish I could bottle how I feel about myself and sell it. Because some people take comments to heart and these ppl just say anything. I mean truly it’s insane to say anyone is ugly, but especially me. 🤣🤣🤣.”

Offset: Don’t Post Takeoff Unless It’s In A Good Light Please!

The Hip Hop world is still feeling the loss of Migos rapper Takeoff. One of his surviving groupmates, Offset, posted a heartfelt Instagram message about his deceased family member last month.

“The pain you have left me with is unbearable,” wrote Offset on November 15. “My heart is shattered and I have so many things to say, but I can’t find the words.

The 30-year-old Georgia native continued, “I’ve been going to sleep and waking up hoping that all of this is a dream, but it’s reality, and reality feels like a nightmare.”

Offset continued to mourn Takeoff’s untimely death in other Instagram posts. Yesterday, Set also made a personal request on how he would like to see the public address The Last Rocket album creator.

“Don’t post Takeoff unless it’s in a positive light please!” stated Offset. It is not clear what may have inspired Set to share that statement at the time that he did.

Quavo, Cardi B & Other Family Members Joined Offset In Publicly Grieving Takeoff’s Death

Several of Takeoff’s additional loved ones have spoken out about his passing. The third Migos member, Quavo, shared his own touching Instagram message about his nephew.

“It’s so hard to tell you Ima miss you because you always with me and we did everything together. Since we were kids you been by my side lookin up at me, them eyes waiting on me to make the next move… then you followed up right behind me,” conveyed Quavo.

Offset’s wife, Hip Hop superstar Cardi B, paid tribute to Takeoff as well. Takeoff’s brother, YRN Lingo, also took to social media to share his thoughts about his sibling no longer being here.

“I know God had to meet one of his purest angels because you were one of them. I’m still trying to understand this life thing, just help me and guide me through this hell on earth, ’cause it’s going to be hard, super hard without you, bro,” posted YRN Lingo.

18-Year-Old Arrested In Connection To Murder Of U.K. Rapper TKorStretch At Notting Hill Carnival

Another person has been arrested in connection to the murder of promising U.K. rapper TKorStretch at London’s Notting Hill Carnival in August.

21-year-old Takayo Nembhard, a.k.a TKorStretch, died after being stabbed during the event in Ladbroke Grove, west London, on Aug. 29. According to multiple reports, a teenager was arrested on Tuesday after surrendering to police. He remains in custody on suspicion of murder.

Meanwhile, authorities are still attempting to trace another man captured on CCTV at the carnival. They issued an image of the man asking for anybody who can identify him to come forward.

Detective Inspector Laura Semple, Specialist Crime, revealed cops are seeking witnesses to assist the investigation. “If can you help or have any information – no matter how small – about Takayo’s murder please come forward.”

Police Appeal For Witnesses To TKorStretch Murder

A police statement confirms detectives are appealing for any video footage taken of the incident. “This incident happened during the carnival in a large crowd,” the statement reads. Cops believe any phone or camera recordings could help identify those responsible for the murder.

TKorStretch was attacked in Ladbroke Grove, under the Westway flyover. He was taken to hospital where he sadly died. His cause of death was listed as a stab wound to the right groin femoral artery.

Cops have arrested several people in connection with the incident. A 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were arrested in TKorStretch’s hometown of Bristol on suspicion of murder on Oct. 19. A 20-year-old woman was also arrested in London on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The teenager and the woman were bailed pending further inquiries, while the third suspect was released under investigation.

Days after the initial arrests, cops also apprehended a 17-year-old boy in Bristol on suspicion of the murder. Police arrested the teen on Oct. 22 and subsequently bailed him pending further inquiries.

Tory Lanez’s Lawyer Expects Rapper To Be “Exonerated Of All Charges” Following Trial In Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Case

Although Tory Lanez was hit with another charge in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case, his attorney is “confident” his client will be fully cleared by the end of the trial.

Prosecutors hit the Toronto native with a third felony charge on Monday (Dec. 5). He has now been charged with discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He previously pleaded not guilty to the initial charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.

If convicted on all three counts Tory Lanez faces a maximum of 22 years and eight months in prison.

However, his attorney, George Mgdesyan believes the musician will escape prison and be cleared of all charges against him.

“We are confident that at the conclusion of this trial the truth will come out,” Mgdesyan told TMZ. “Mr. Peterson will be exonerated of all charges.”

Tory Lanez took to social media on Tuesday afternoon with his own confident message.

“No weapon formed against me shall prosper,” he tweeted before adding, “EVER.”

Prosecutors accuse Tory Lanez of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020. He cannot discuss the case publicly after a judge issued a gag order preventing him from doing so.

Megan Thee Stallion Feared Tory Lanez Might Kill Her

Megan is not bound by any such restriction, telling Gayle King earlier this year she worried Tory Lanez could kill her.

“He started shooting, and I’m just like, ‘oh my God.’ He shot a couple of times. And I didn’t even want to move. I don’t want to move too quick like ’cause I’m like ‘oh my God’ if I take the wrong step, I don’t know if he can shoot something that’s like super important.’ I don’t know if he could shoot me and kill me,” Megan Thee Stallion explained to King in April. She added “I was really scared because I had never been shot at before.”

Missy Elliott Recalls Making ‘Supa Dupa Fly’ Album In 2 Weeks, Opens Up About Her Discography

Missy Elliott has given fans a glimpse behind the curtain, revealing some of the pressures involved in creating her groundbreaking albums.

The Virginia native revealed how each album added to her artistry and how she and super producer Timbaland evolved to become one of the most creative duos in Hip-Hop.

Missy Elliott revealed she felt “stressfree” crafting her debut LP, Supa Dupa Fly, in 1997 because she lacked expectation. However, the motivation for the project came from her desire to have her own label.

“My label told me they would give me my own label if I did 1 album,” Missy explained. “So me & @Timbaland completed this album in 2 weeks not knowing this would be the beginning of many more to come🔥”

The critically acclaimed album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and would go on to achieve Platinum certification, selling over a million copies in the U.S. alone.

According to Missy, the “hardest” and her “least favorite” project to complete was her sophomore offering, Da Real World.

“Because of the success of the 1st album I was so hard on myself,” she revealed. However, she eventually “realized the MASTERPIECE,” she and Timbaland created with her 1999 LP.

Missy Elliott & Timbaland Wanted to “Experiment” On “So Addictive”

Missy felt some “relief” by the time she made her third album, 2001’s So Addictive, allowing her and Tim the space to “experiment.” The duo was “open to showing what the FUTURE of music could sound like in our minds🔥”

So Addictive earned Missy her highest Billboard 200 chart position yet, debuting at No. 2. The album spawned the hits “One Minute Man”, featuring Ludacris and Trina, and “Get Ur Freak On” and went on to receive two Grammy Awards.

Having created projects “so different in sound & cadence,” Missy and Timbaland were unsure where to go next. Nonetheless, they eventually combined their “love for old school Hip Hop & breaks beats” with their “FUTURE sound” to create Under Construction in 2002.

A year later, Missy Elliot and Timbaland returned to “SOUND EXPERIMENTING” to make This Is Not a Test!

“Each time we took a risk sonically,” Missy Elliot said of her partnership with Timbaland. Check out her tweets below.

Cardi B Encourages “50/50” Relationships After Being Left Homeless By An Ex

Cardi B has weighed in on the debate sparked by GloRilla last week over whether women should contribute 50/50 in their relationships.

The NYC rapper agreed with her “Tomorrow 2” collaborator saying women should be financially independent if they want to build a future with their partner.

Furthermore, Cardi has some experience in the matter, revealing she was once left homeless after the man she lived with kicked her out.

When the topic came up during a recent Instagram live session, Cardi B explained, “I am not totally against 50/50.” She went on to add that it “really depends” on the individual “situation” and “lifestyle.”

Cardi offered a scenario where a couple, earning $50k a year each, plan to buy a house as an example. However, only one party contributes to the bills and other household expenses. “B#### y’all never gonna buy a f###### house,” she stated. “And that just goes if you want to be a part of something.”

Cardi acknowledged that some women might want to be kept by their partner but warned against it. ‘You ain’t got no say so in nothing,” she explained before adding, “A n#### could kick you out whenever.”

The Grammy Award winner speaks from experience, having been kicked out by an ex before. “I didn’t like that feeling,” Cardi B recalled, revealing she was left homeless and had to sleep in a space below the roof of her building.

DJ Quik Believes He Deserves To Be On The Same Level As Dr. Dre

DJ Quik ruminated about his status as an artist in a string of Twitter posts on Tuesday (December 6).

The Hip Hop legend felt he should be regarded as highly as Dr. Dre. DJ Quik said he knew why he never reached the same heights as his West Coast contemporary.

“I deserve to be where Dre is,” he wrote. “I don’t think it’s fair, but I understand why. I’ve never had a machine behind me, that always hurt my friends more than it did me.”

He added, “My friends have come to me in confidentiality to say ‘do your music like you want to. Just be DJ Quik! People love that s###!’”

https://twitter.com/djquik/status/1600168141329350656

“There is no automatic winning lottery ticket for everyone Periodt,” he wrote. “On this planet, you get what you get. But it’s what you do with what you have been given to work with that makes you a star.”

DJ Quik concluded, “I know I’ll never be as popular as I need to be, but I have 10s of artists superstars! And when they shine, I just smile. The janitor doesn’t get all the glory, but he keeps the backstage, clean as a triage.”

“Jewish people can’t tell me who I can love and who I can’t love,” ‘Ye said. “You can’t say, you can’t force your pain on everyone else. Jewish people, forgive Hitler today. Let it go.”

Tory Lanez Faces Third Charge In Megan Thee Shooting Case

Prosecutors added a third felony charge against Tory Lanez in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case.

According to multiple reports, Tory Lanez was charged with discharging a firearm with gross negligence on Monday (December 5). He faces up to six years in prison for the new charge.

Tory Lanez was originally charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The third felony charge won’t impact the Canadian artist’s maximum sentence if convicted on all three counts. He still faces a maximum of 22 years and eight months in prison.

Jury selection in the shooting trial began on Monday. Prosecutors accuse Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020.

A judge also released Tory Lanez from house arrest on Monday. Prosecutors objected, citing concerns about potential witness intimidation.

“I will terminate the house arrest at this point,” Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford said. “The main reason is that during trial, it’s difficult to have a client who’s not accessible. I’m doing this mainly for the trial preparation aspect.”

The 30-year-old rapper was placed on house arrest in October. His bond stands at $350,000.

Yung Dub D Drops New Single, “Heal”, and Wakes Up the Industry

Every artist has a unique journey and experience in the music industry. In most cases, the journey is usually very challenging, especially when you need the right connections. However, with determination and resilience, many artists can navigate the competitive industry and realize their dreams. Kedric Dewon Battee, commonly known by his stage name, Yung Dub D, is an American rapper from Dallas, Texas, taking the music industry by storm. His passion for music began when he was nine years old. He would sing with his cousins at his grandmother’s house, which was the first step toward his journey in the music industry.

Yung hails from a humble background of a single-parent family, as his father passed on when he was only six. His father’s death left him and his mother moving from place to place in search of a better life. However, the young music enthusiast did not let his background or past stop him from achieving his goals. He remained consistent and persistent in seeing his dreams come true.

A talented artist, Yung has produced hit after hit that has seen him gain a huge audience and increase his social media followers. Some notable accomplishments on his social media platforms include 100K views on YouTube for his video, “I Did”, 43K on Hush, 65K on Bloodline, and 20K on Codes. He was recognized in Los Angeles Weekly as number six of the “Top 10 Artists You Should Be Following on Instagram”.

Music enthusiasts yearn to listen to refreshing music that resonates with people’s daily lives. Yung’s latest single, “Heal”, has gained a cult-like audience. In this single, attaining love is something Yung created to help others in a healing process because it is relatable, and others need to know the importance of healing through relationships.

At times, listening to what others say about you can outweigh what you believe about yourself. You tend to limit yourself based on the perception of others concerning your life, which limits your potential and derails your dreams. This is an obstacle Yung struggled with because people did not believe in him or his career aspirations. However, he overcame this hurdle by listening to himself and not what others thought of him. He says realizing he is in charge of his life helped him negate the opinions of others.

Yung advises other aspiring artists to never surrender their passions, even if other people doubt them. He insists on taking control of the wheel of your life. You are the driver and not a passenger that rides along with what others dictate in your life. He also believes that you alone know your passion in life, and you should not let others discourage you and underestimate your belief in your dreams.

Yung hasn’t stopped dreaming and is continually working hard to see his dreams come true. His biggest dream and aspiration is to be one of the greatest rappers in history. He is currently working on two projects, and he is very optimistic that the future is even brighter. He dreams of his music creating a worldwide sensation and being globally recognized.

EXCLUSIVE: Nicki Minaj’s Husband & Rape Victim Ordered To Try To Settle Lawsuit

Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty must participate in mediation with his rape accuser Jennifer Hough, who filed a lawsuit against him.

Last year, Jennifer Hough sued Nicki Minaj’s husband for infliction of emotional distress, harassment and witness intimidation. Judge James R. Cho referred the case to mediation on Tuesday (December 6).

“The case is referred to Court-annexed mediation,” the court noted. “Parties to select a mediator by 12/20/2022 and complete mediation by 3/6/2023. Parties may participate in the mediation remotely.”

It added, “Parties shall file a joint status report two weeks after completing the mediation, but no later than 3/20/2023, whichever date is earlier.”

Both sides will engage in “limited written discovery that would facilitate settlement discussions.” If Jennifer Hough and Kenneth Petty cannot reach a settlement, the case will proceed to trial.

The court also entered the pretrial schedule for the case on Tuesday. Automatic disclosures must be exchanged by January 9, 2023. All discovery, including expert depositions, needed to be to completed by September 5, 2023.

Jennifer Hough accused Kenneth Petty of trying to intimidate, harass and threaten her in an effort to make her recant her rape allegations against him. She sued him and his wife Nicki Minaj, claiming the rapper took part in the harassment campaign.

Earlier this year, Jennifer Hough dropped her claims against Nicki Minaj. But Kenneth Petty remained as a defendant in the lawsuit.

Kenneth Petty was convicted of first-degree attempted rape in 1995. He served more than four years in prison.

Nicki Minaj’s husband pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in 2021. A judge sentenced him to one year of home confinement and three years of probation in July.

Kenneth Petty is currently pursuing legal action against the State of New York and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services over his sex offender status. Oral arguments in the case begin on January 6, 2023.

Kanye West Looking For Love After Antisemitic Comments, New Girl, Juliana Nalú, Publicly States Relationship Is Dead

Seems like Kanye West’s antisemitic comments not only caused him to lose deals but also messed with his love life.

According to Page Six, the woman the rapper had been sharing time with, Juliana Nalú, has parted ways because of his negative comments about the Jews and his praise of Adolf Hitler.

After posting a pic on her Instagram, someone asked the Portuguese beauty in her native language how could she be down with someone who is “fond of Nazism,” she responded “I’m single. Thanks for caring.”

West and Nalú stated dating around the time the rapper took to Twitter and tweeted out he was going to go “Death con 3 on Jewish People.”

However, many say the two were dating to help him “drown out the headlines about anti-Semitism with other content.” This “new girlfriend,” who is half his age, was a strategy “to try and make people forget” some of the awful and bigoted things he was saying.

Another ex has tried to distance herself from Yeezy.

According to AllHipHop.com, Julia Fox said dating Kanye actually backfired on her and alleges he is the reason why some of her acting opportunities dried up.

“I’m not getting as many offers as I was before, weirdly,” she said. “There’s been a lot of weird drawbacks with reaching that level of notoriety.”
