Cardi B made her first public appearance since the online controversy involving her estranged husband, Offset. The “I Like It” hitmaker showed up at a Marine Toys for Tots Foundation event in New York on Tuesday (December 19).
The Newburgh Armory Unity Center shared photos and videos of Cardi B at the toy giveaway on the organization’s Instagram Story. Additional images and clips from the location also made the rounds on X (formerly Twitter).
For example, blogger KenBarbie tweeted a recording of the 31-year-old Bronx native meeting with Newburgh residents. The caption for that social media post read, “Cardi B is back outside, giving back, and loving on families in NY.”

In addition to attending a holiday-themed Toys for Tots charity program, Cardi B continued to make business moves. Her Whipshots vodka-infused whipped cream brand launched a new installment of the “Cardi & Patti” digital series.
Journalist Elliott Wilson has seen his name in the headlines a lot recently. Once again, the 52-year-old cultural critic ignited criticism directed at him for a social media post.
On Tuesday (December 19), Wilson tweeted a photo of Offset with Gunna and a photo of Quavo wearing a “Free Young Thug” shirt. Some Twitter (X) users slammed Wilson for seemingly pitting Offset and Quavo against each other.
Gunna has been accused of snitching on YSL label head Young Thug in his ongoing RICO case. The “FukUMean” rapper has denied the allegations.
Many of the replies to Elliott Wilson’s tweet called him out. One person wrote, “Quit being messy,” while another X user responded, “This takes the cake for [the] nasty award of the f###ng year wow.”
In addition, The Joe Budden Podcast co-host Lamar “Ice” Burney took a subtle shot at Elliott Wilson. Ice quote-tweeted Wilson and added, “hip hop journalism.” Ice’s post was a reference to Wilson’s complaint about Nicki Minaj twerking on Kai Cenat’s livestream.
Wilson responded to Ice by writing, “Documenting Quavo’s reaction to Offset kickin’ it with Gunna is actually Hip-Hop journalism.” He later provided a general reaction to the backlash, writing, “Trolling. Hating. Messy. Y’all talk in zesty internet terms.”
As the fourth quarter of 2023 winds down, it appears Metro Boomin wants his fans to know something big is coming. The super-producer behind 2022’s Heroes & Villains studio LP once again teased a new project with Future.
On Tuesday (December 19), Metro Boomin tweeted a photo of himself and Future in the studio. The St. Louis native captioned his tweet, “COMING SOON [three eagle emojis].”
Metro’s post comes after the Boominati Worldwide label founder offered a similar teaser at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards in September. At the time, he said, “Me and Pluto album on the way.”
Future has worked extensively with Metro Boomin throughout his career. Some of the Atlanta-raised rapper’s biggest hits feature beats by Young Metro, including songs like “Honest” and “Mask Off.”
Metro also handled a significant amount of the production for Future and Drake’s 2015 joint mixtape What a Time to Be Alive. However, there seems to be some tension between Metro and Drake at the moment.
Attendees at the 2024 Rolling Loud California festival will have the chance to see Metro Boomin and Future perform live at the event. The two Hip-Hop stars replaced Lil Uzi Vert as headliners for the March 17 show.
Nicki Minaj scored another No. 1 hit on a specific genre chart. This time the New York City-bred leader of the Barbz made it to the pinnacle of the Hot Gospel Songs rankings.
“Blessings” debuted in the Hot Gospel Songs chart’s pole position. The Pink Friday 2 song features Georgia-bred Gospel singer Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
Previously, Nicki Minaj and Tasha Cobbs Leonard led the Hot Gospel Songs tally with Leonard’s “I’m Getting Ready” in 2017. That collaboration also peaked at No. 2 on the Gospel Airplay chart.
Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 opened atop the Billboard 200, becoming the Hip-Hop recording artist’s third career chart-topping album. The 22-track project collected 228,000 units in its first week of release.
In addition to Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Minaj recruited J. Cole, Lil Wayne, Tate Kobang, Drake, Lourdiz, Lil Uzi Vert and Future for Pink Friday 2. Bonus versions of the studio LP also feature 50 Cent, Monica and Keyshia Cole.
Two records off Pink Friday 2 made it into the Billboard Hot 100 chart’s Top 40 region this week. The album also hosts the former No. 1 single “Super Freaky Girl” as well as the Top 20 hit “Red Ruby da Sleeze.”
British rapper Dave has raised a staggering sum after pledging the proceeds of his latest merch drop to children affected by the ongoing conflicts in Palestine, Sudan and Congo.
On Tuesday (December 19), two weeks after launching the sale, the South Londoner announced he garnered almost half a million British pounds ($633,215 USD) for the children’s charities.
“We raised close to £500,000 factoring everything in last Sunday for the charities in Palestine Congo and Sudan. Massive love to all,” he penned on X. “Thanks for playing a part and allowing me to play my part also. Will keep you updated on the journey the donations take to those in need.”

Dave took to social media earlier this month to announce the charity sale. In addition, Dave promised to personally double the proceeds.
“We will be donating ALL the proceeds to medical care and essential needs for children in Palestine; children affected by the conflict in Sudan; and children affected by displacement in Congo,” he explained on December 7.
He continued, “Whatever we generate with this drop I will personally match out of my own pocket and double, in donations. Raising awareness and keeping these conversations alive is of the most importance, and anyway in which anyone can help is appreciated massively.”

In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Dave has racked up an impressive set of accolades this year. He and fellow Londoner Central Cee dominated the U.K. charts with their first-ever collaboration, “Sprinter.”
The duo broke records when they debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. chart, earning a record-breaking 13.4 million streams, the biggest week of streams for a rap song ever in U.K. chart history. “Sprinter,” the lead single from their joint EP, Split Decision, went on to become the longest reigning No. 1 in U.K. rap.
Jadakiss is no slouch in the gym and is ready to show off his athletic prowess at any time, even when he’s fully kitted out in winter gear.
The Lox member is going viral after sharing a video demonstration of his gymnast skills. Jadakiss took to Instagram on Tuesday (December 29) with a video from the gym. Despite being dressed for the chilly New York City weather, donning a knee-length Puffa jacket and hoodie, Kiss was prepared.
He expertly grabbed onto the gymnastic rings before performing an impressive aerial stunt.
It’s not the first time Jadakiss has gone viral for his impressive yet unconventional workouts. He flexed his upper body strength to do some pull-ups on New York City scaffolding while donning a pair of Timbs.
Jadakiss takes his health and workouts seriously and believes staying fit is essential to enjoying a happy life.
In 2021, Jadakiss joined Lil Cease for a workout and declared, “healthy is gangsta,” during an episode of the Junior M.A.F.I.A. rapper’s Facebook Watch show.
“Everybody want to be tough guys and this and that, and rich,” Jadakiss explained. “If you not healthy, you can’t be alive to spend your money. If you not healthy, you can’t enjoy the party, you can’t enjoy the perks of life, you won’t be here to see your kids graduate, to see ’em score they first touchdown, to see things like that. So health is more important than anything.”
Kanye West has put his Malibu Mansion on the market for $53 million after buying the home in 2021 for $57 million and gutting the place.
Ye attempted to turn the 4,000-square-foot beachfront property into a “bomb shelter” without windows, plumbing, or electricity. The plan was to off-grid and hide from the Kardashians and the Clintons, according to a lawsuit filed earlier this year by Ye’s former project manager and property caretaker.
However, Ye’s new celebrity realtor believes the renovations are a selling point, per TMZ. According to Selling Sunset star, Jason Oppenheim, Kanye West left a blank canvas, making it easier for the new owners to design the home exactly to their liking.
He told the outlet that although Ye removed the interior finishes, “this creates an unbelievably rare opportunity to buy a Picasso on the water.” Oppenheim claims the new occupant has “the ability to restore it to your own specific standards, with modern technology and excellence.”
The property is the subject of a lawsuit. Tony Saxon alleges West failed to pay him and fired him when he couldn’t work due to a back injury.
He claimed Kanye West instructed him turn the Malibu mansion into a “Bat Cave,” so he could “hide from the Clintons and Kardashians.”
Saxon told NBC News in September: “Ye wanted no electricity. He only wanted plants, candles, battery lights; and to have everything open and dark. You can’t keep food in that house, because you had no refrigerator left. You had no windows. I had seagulls flying in.”
Soulja Boy’s baby mama is denying she slept with Blueface and claims she has taken legal action to stop him from spewing any further “defamatory” statements.
What began as an argument over who would be victorious in a Verzuz battle has taken several turns. Blueface and Soulja Boy recently clashed on social media over who has more hits, but the beef quickly heated up. At one point, the rappers’ baby mamas dragged into the discussion.
The West Coast rapper taunted Soulja, on X. “I hit yah Bm already soulja boy,” he claimed. “Ask her who perform better hit for hit.”
However, on Tuesday (December 19) the mother of Soulja’s child announced she isn’t taking Blue’s claims lightly.
“The statements being made about me are defamatory and false,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “My lawyers have sent a cease and desist to Blueface.”
Over the weekend, Blueface and Soulja Boy fired off multiple threats at each other, and Blue even showed up to a proposed fight location. Soulja didn’t show and accused Blue of trying to set him up.
Meanwhile, Blueface found himself in hot water with another rapper earlier this month. During an Instagram Live, Marissa Da’Nae, the mother of NLE Choppa’s son Chozen, accused Blueface of trying to pick her up.
Blueface claimed NLE Choppa was worried and said he had been “calling my fone all day about his baby momma.”
NLE Choppa replied, “Keep bullying women, that ain’t gone work here n stop snitching.”
Jeannie Mai is denying Jeezy’s accusations that she gatekeeps his relationship with their daughter amid their ongoing divorce.
Mai asked a judge to send the former couple to mediation over fears for their child’s safety while in her father’s care. In particular, Mai shared concerns over Jeezy “safely securing” firearms.
According to multiplereports, Mai filed a response to her former partner’s request for a temporary custody hearing. The talk show host rejected his claims that she “acted as a gatekeeper” over Jeezy’s time with 23-month-old daughter Monaco.
“It is essential to clarify that Ms. Jenkins’ insistence on reasonable safety measures being put in place,” Mai’s lawyers write in the new filing. “Such as safely securing and locking away all firearms that have been unsecured in the past, as well as having familiarity and properly trained caregivers is absolutely not gatekeeping, but rather a responsible effort to prioritize their daughter’s well-being.”
Furthermore, Mai’s attorneys argue the filing “is not an attempt to restrict” Jeezy’s access to their child.
“These requests are grounded in Ms. Jenkins’ genuine concern for the parties’ daughter’s safety and security,” the pleading continued. “Especially when under the care of others and traveling across the country, and are reasonable protective measures.”
Jeezy filed for divorce in September after two years of marriage. Last month, he asked the court to address temporary custody. The rapper claimed their previously agreed schedule was “becoming increasingly less feasible.”
According to Jeezy’s filing, “the lack of consistency, continuity and stability” in the schedule is stressful to their daughter. He also alleged Mai is “causing confusion and tension between the parties and is working to stifle the development” between Jeezy and their child.
DAMN! I am not with the culture of vultures, but this has to be said. The dude Adam 22 has made an aggressive move towards China Mac and his once-time buddy AD. Well, you might remember this. Back in the day, these two men were going back and forth online and decided to settle their issues like men. Well, at that time, “like men” meant a fair one. The only thing is, back then, they did not show the actual fight. They showed some marks to make it appear to be a fight – AFTER THE “FIGHT.” It looked like China Mac got the short end of the stick but that is probably because AD was so much bigger. Either way, it seems like a “good look” because they did not shoot each other.
Now, we are finding out this was a bad look. They did not even fight. Adam, the owner of No Jumper, says the whole thing was about a skit. A skit?! Is this where we are now? Hip-Hop people and presumed media outlets creating skits? Seems so. Check out below and see if he is being honest.
He really paints a bad picture of China Mac and even Crip Mac to some degree. This is really not the way me want to be exiting 2023 and entering 2024. He makes it seems like China Mac is a total struggle rapper and has absolutely nothing else going on.
Well…I got nothing else, but here is the original post of the fake fight.
Atlanta rapper Lil Purk, 16, has been sentenced in connection to the deadly 2022 shooting of two teenagers outside of a public transit station.
According 11Alive News, Lil Purk, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the shooting at Atlantic Station in November 2022. A 12-year-old and 15-year-old were left dead, and four other individuals were injured by the shooting. A total of seven individuals were arrested in connection to the case, with five defendants entering guilty pleas in violation of the Street Gang Act.
While it appears Lil Purk was arrested by Atlanta Police Department (APD) in the days following the shooting, APD didn’t identify the 15 and 16-year-old suspects they apprehended in the case. However, APD did announce the suspects would be facing murder charges. They also revealed one of the teens was apprehended in New York and both are students in the Atlanta Public Schools system. At the time of their arrest, both teens were described as “shooters” in the incident.
Lil Purk began making a name for himself following the release of his viral single “Walkem Down,” which currently has attracted more than one million streams in-counting on Spotify. In 2022 he released his debut project Before The Fame, which featured his breakout single “I Be With P5ive” via Simple Stupid and Geffen Records. In a statement shared to his Instagram Story, Lil Purk addressed his legal situation and advised the younger generation to take heed.
“To all my family and fans I would like to sincerely apologize to y’all and to all the younger generation looking up to me,” Lil Purk wrote in part. “Let me and my situation be a lesson learned for our whole generation everything not what it seem and I’m still pleading my innocence I love you lil hot and to the families hurt by this situation forgive me also still keeping faith alive 43va.”
Check out the video below for more details on the sentencing in deadly shooting incident.
Two Milwaukee rappers were shot and killed in the city on Monday (December 18). According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, families identified the victims as Joevon “Jigg” Wilder and Marcell “Celly Cell” Hendrix.
Jigg was one of the most notable artists in the Milwaukee Hip-Hop scene. The late rapper teamed up with Chicken P for the song “Fast Cash Babies,” which generated millions of views on YouTube and became a signature single for the local scene. His grandmother Peggy Wright told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he planned to leave the city to continue pursuing his music career.
“He was a loving and caring person,” she said. “He was a good father. He had a good personality. He was a character. He was laid back and chill and would just write songs.”
TeeGlazedIt, who directed most of Jigg’s music videos, reacted to the 26-year-old rapper’s death on Instagram Stories. He posted several photos of the two together and expressed his belief over the loss.
“Naw cuz this s### can’t be real,” he wrote. “We just had dat long ass talk in front everybody dey seen it. You was my brother you p##### me off plenty times but real brothers put dat s### aside we got years in dis s###… damn cuz.”
Celly Cell, not to be confused with the Bay Area rapper with a similar name, was 24. His mother told the local paper she was still in shock over his death but noted he was a father too.
The shooting allegedly happened around 2900 North 20th Street in Milwaukee. Police have not made any arrests or released more information about the incident.
Cops urged anyone with info about the shooting to contact the Milwaukee police at 414-935-7360. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can reach out via Crime Stoppers by calling 414-224-TIPS.
Kodak Black will remain in federal custody after a Florida judge deferred a ruling at his court appearance in Miami on Tuesday (December 19). His attorneys asked the judge to let him attend a 90-day drug treatment in Arizona. Florida authorities objected to him going somewhere outside of their jurisdiction, per NBC Miami.
Earlier this month, Kodak was arrested for cocaine possession and other charges in Florida. He was released on bail on December 7, but the 26-year-old rapper quickly landed back in custody for a probation violation.
Kodak appeared in court with the hope of securing his release again on Tuesday. But the judge kept him in custody, opting to put the final decision in the hands of another judge overseeing Kodak’s cocaine possession case.
Cops allegedly discovered cocaine when they found him asleep at the wheel of his car on December 7. He denied possessing cocaine but admitted he had Percocet. Kodak said he fell asleep because he was on lean at the time of his arrest.
“I was on the lean,” he said on Instagram Live. “I was asleep in front of my family house. That’s it.”
Last week, Kodak’s lawyer Bradford Cohen spoke out about his client’s arrest on Instagram. Cohen blamed past prison abuse for Kodak’s struggle with drugs.
“In this latest case, my belief is that the ‘rock’ this officer found when tested will be a Percocet, not cocaine,” Cohen wrote. “The test they do is a presumptive test for illegal substances. It just turns blue.”
He added, “That being said, @kodakblack has doubled down on getting better with assistance from many people and was signed up for immersion rehabilitation for his dependency. Hopefully, he will be able to [continue] with the help he needs. The system penalizes users with charges of trafficking with no indicia of trafficking. That isn’t what the legislature intended.”
Kodak awaits a judge’s ruling on his proposed drug treatment in Arizona.
Editor Odell Hall recently discussed his role in the creation of a new African superhero, Prince Ato, also known as “The Porcupine Man.” The intriguing character is a central figure in the newly released book titled “The Plague of Placidius.” Hall’s commentary provided a deeper understanding of the character’s development and why it makes for perfect reading.
On another note, Hall is also known as Odeisel, a member of the AllHipHop family. A principle of The Gunshow, he was party to the dramatic rise of the site. I talked to my friend and respected Hip-Hop aficionado about his current happenings, the books, “The Wire” and what AllHipHop turning 25 means.
It’s actually a full-length prose novel. There will be a graphic conversion as Prince Ato takes off. My partner, Dr. Edmund Kayga-Agyemang, is the listed writer and this book was his idea. He has had this story swimming in his head for years and the plot was all his.
When I read it I thought elevator pitch: Shazam meets Black Panther meets Spider-man; a coming-of-age story, whose backdrop takes place in Africa and America, featuring a prince destined to fight for the future of the world but overwhelmed by an immense responsibility. There is science and magic and subways and airports. And killer Pandas.
I added some depth to the characters, heft to the story beats, and fleshed out the backstories. I designed the look of the characters. Full collaborative work. It was painstaking but still fun and adventurous.
You and I come from the short-form news/entertainment world so altering the focus for the long form was difficult at first. Trying to meet the word count of a real novel without being repetitive, while maintaining voice and tense was a beast.
Then you start to care for the characters and they become your children. We have 100% ownership and trademarks so it isn’t like you’re writing for a publisher and you have to put the toys back in the box.
Placidius is a warlord saved from death by an angel who escaped the wrath of The Maker by falling through a black hole. He leaks a pheromone, which causes people to wild out. Like if somebody made “Slam” or “Throw Ya Gunz” from Onyx into a nerve gas. The second someone inhales, violence ensues. In a place like New York, with that kind of population on top of each other, you can see how that would be catastrophic. Placidius murdered his way out of a thousand-year imprisonment. It took half the earth to chain him up the first time and gods lost their lives in the war. ‘Rakimically’ speaking, he ain’t no joke.
AllHipHop: What is the state of the culture as it relates to black folks in comics/fantasy?
Black people have had it so hard on earth that we have always been present in fantasy. You can boldly go wherever you want, but you ain’t leaving us behind. But in mass media there is a resistance to show Black power and wonder. We know Panthro is the Black Thundercat. But he was light blue. John Stewart was Green Lantern for an entire generation with the Justice League cartoons but they went right back to Hal Jordan for the movie and it flopped. X-Men had a Black mutant Darwin, whose power was literally evolving to survive anything, killed like a scrub in the New Class movie.
Now we are telling our own stories, continuing the legacies of Priest (Jim Owsley), David Walker, the great Dwayne McDuffie, Reginald Hudlin and so many others. But with original characters. Our own toys. And our Black children are much more free to consume, create, and cosplay on levels that outstrip fringe participation. We ComiConning. Bigly.
AllHipHop: Is there any connection to Hip-Hop?
With this particular IP, no. But we have more characters that will tap in to the American Black experience in a more intimate way. Some references may be interwoven at random because New York is a character in The Plague of Placidius and she is a Hip-Hop city.
Without King of Rock I don’t have my wife and children or my thousands of internet surrogate Ill Community children. I don’t know you, and my contributions to the world would probably be in a different vein, so I owe very much of who I am to the music.
But with all culture and art it must mature and commerce has stunted the mass media version of this thing of ours. But that’s only the mainstream. There is more dope s### at this time than ever. To kind of cross-pollinate, look at the Spider-Verse movies and Miles Morales. I can only imagine what it would have been like if my Spider-Man was Black. But the soundtrack with Swae Lee was so Hip-Hop.
Miles wears hoodies and Jordan 1’s. The new Transformers movie was decidedly 90s Hip-Hop. Ditto Ninja Turtles. Our music is supplanting the old as we are. All of these movies used to have rock soundtracks and electric guitars. You Got The Touch. Now, De La Soul is closing the movies. We have become the soundtrack of life.
It was a wonderful time to be alive and active in the first wave of credible Hip-Hop digital journalism. After Russ sunk 30 million in 360HipHop, we were the litmus test to see if this could be real. We had so much talent: Jake Paine. AquaBoogie. Jason Rodriguez. Clover Hope. Dove Clark. Jamile from Philly. Martin Berrios. Kathy Iandoli. Some of the writers, Ismael Abdusalaam, Nia B, Shelby Powell, Scott Williams, Danny Stolich. There were so many. All of these people have gone on to fuel engines, write books and produce extraordinary work.
Even our Ill Community citizens are doing great things. The mighty and prolific Dart Adams is one of ours. DJ Akademiks. Doctors, lawyers, military. We raised children. And it’s still here. On to bigger, better, richer execution. The world is burning. The records are streaming. We should be there to convey it at all times. To our children.
“The Wire” is the greatest piece of American television because of its truth. We like to look down on criminals without acknowledging the part we all play. Everything else is childish. Good vs. Evil. The world don’t work like that.
The police, the school system, the legal system, the political system, the squares and the streets. All in bed together. They schedule how many jails to build based on how many kids fail the 4th-grade exams. Not even the Sopranos got that deep into the interplay of the streets and the suites. And the children as collateral damage.
My favorite character was Slim Charles. He was the only person who remained true to the game. And he ultimately won. The hitters and Avon locked. Stringer, Bodie, Snoop, Joe all dead. Michael who had a bright future and clear talent is now an archetypical rogue. Charles, who never even wanted to be Captain, and was willing to lay down his life to save Joe from Omar, is now running the Co-op. Stringer thought he was smarter than the game. Avon had too much pride. Joe thought everything was a transaction. Marlo lacked diplomacy and coalition-building skills.
AllHipHop: What would you like to see in comics? It seems like the bubble is bursting.
I think comics have only touched the tip of the iceberg. New stories with new depth are being told. New media is being used. Comics, like Hip-Hop are past the fringe. And the movie aspect is like rap radio insofar as the deviation from the core art towards commerce diminishes the potency to the base.
But just as we thought Marvel was dying, Loki hit the ball out of the park and pow, we’re getting What If? season two for Christmas. A new episode daily for nine days. I am all in!
AllHipHop: Give me an idea of where you are going with this literary movement of yours.
People reach out to me for various projects. I had a couple of Ebony articles on Nas and Marsai Martin and their business moves. I have an essay in a recently-released scholarly book about the response to the movement against Critical Race Theory entitled, Illmatic Consequences: The Clapback to Opponents of Critical Race Theory. Although I only post when I am moved, Planetill.com is still in effect and I have a year-end project coming that will be really good. Everyone is looking at 50 but I got another anniversary I am eyeing for Hip-Hop.
Our new company Kagyai-Hall Publishing aims to tell the stories of the diaspora. On all media levels and genres. The vampire assassins are getting their own story. The Atoverse is expanding to tell stories of his three sisters who are tough in their own right.
We also have podcast-form stories about real-life people who have fallen hard and gotten off the mat. Human stories that test our limits. We look forward to building communities and bringing people together through the art of storytelling. More Black faces and less blackface.
If you haven’t already, go out and cop The Plague of Placidius. For your readers, I’ll give a discount just let me know when it runs so I can set it up. There are a couple of things in the book I left as a tip of the hat to the IC. If anyone points them out I’ll send them an autographed copy.
Peace to AllHipHop, you, Greg, the Almighty Gunshow and all the Ill Community. We will all converge sooner than later.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan‘s third season dropped earlier this month and, just like the seasons that preceded it, the story arc is already in high gear as strange bedfellows are revealed and old beefs squashed. AllHipHop recently sat down with stars Patina Millerand Mekai Curtis, who play Raquel and Kanan, respectively, where we got the rundown on what fans can expect in the new season, their character evolutions and how they have honed their craft as actors since the inaugural season.
AllHipHop:Your character on Power Book III: Raising Kanan is intriguing. And so in many ways, she’s a powerful individual, a scary individual. These sorts of individuals tend to bring fear to men. What is it like playing this role psychologically?
Patina Miller: Oh I love it. More than anything, I think any time you can get into the head of someone that’s the greatest thing, right? Like at the end of the day, I just think it’s surprising because, you know, people are used to men doing that, getting the opportunities to play these characters, playing these crime bosses. Like she’s the Tony Soprano of it all. But then you have this character of Raquel Thomas in the ’90s taking on that thing and I think it’s a little scarier when it’s a woman. ‘Cause you know, Rock, you just never know what you’re going to get. She’s hungry. She wants the power. She’s gonna get the power. But she also loves her son. And so you have that one side of her who is this business person who wants to be the best at business?
But then you also have her being the matriarch of a family, a family that is going through a lot of different things. It’s a close, tight-knit family and then you have her as a mother and so you get to see her. It makes her all the more scary because she’s fighting to protect—at all costs. So I think it makes her dangerous.
AllHipHop: Could you talk about the transition from season one to two to three and how you had to grow as an actress in each stage?
Patina Miller: For me I only want to do things where I feel like I can grow. For me personally, I am an actor who is always a student. I like to learn from the best. I like to learn in terms of watching people. Just human interactions. I like to learn by what I watch and then obviously my training. My background has prepared me with the tools to take on characters and to craft a character. And so for me, being able to have this character that I can craft from the beginning to like, hopefully, many more seasons. It’s been wonderful. I am having a lot of fun. I love to play all these different sides of herself. I always want the audience to see something that they haven’t seen before. So I always start a season from the very beginning. It’s like, how do I want to start this season? What do I want? What do I want to elicit from people? She’s a bad as hell. She stands on her morals. She’s the matriarch. She is heavy on the family and she loves her son.
And she is not to be messed with. That’s how I wanted to start. But, as the season continued, it’s like seeing the ruthlessness. It’s boring to play after a while when you see it so much. So then for me it’s about how can I put a spin on that? How can I start working with the inner part of her? Like what makes her tick? What is she scared of? What are her vulnerabilities? What is her rawness? How is she naive in some ways and how she makes mistakes? So I like to lean in.
She’s the opposite of what people think of me and that keeps me growing. And it also keeps her fresh. It keeps her a universal character because no character is perfect. No person is perfect, and people can see, whether they’re men or female, they can see themselves in this character, and it’s a journey, right?
In Season 3, she’s dealing with a lot. We’ve seen her be a winner. You’ve seen her lose. Now you’re seeing her have to grapple with all of her actions leading up to the Season 2 finale, and season three is all about, you know, trying to repair it, if she can, and trying to get her son back. She knows her son sees her for who she is now. There’s no more lies that she can tell him. Now the only thing she can do is try to get him back.
Young actor Mekai Curtis plays Kanan, the adult version of whom was played by 50 Cent in the original Power: Ghost series. The young brother was very excited to speak with a legacy Hip-Hop media brand and his words flowed naturally.
AllHipHop: I’d like to state that your growth as an actor is noticeable in the way that you hold scenes and your emotional pauses, if you will. are, are expertly done. I’d like to know how have you matured as an actor dealing with this gut wrenching and high stakes material from one season to the next?
Mekai Curtis: First of all I appreciate that. Thank you because I do try to. You know, I struggle to work every day and I want to be better than I was the day before and just having the right material that allows you to do that is a big blessing. But, yeah, that’s really it. You know, it’s taking it day by day, scene by scene and always asking questions and trusting your gut instinct with certain pieces and certain things that are happening. I just try to give you know as organic a reaction to what’s happening to this person as possible I try to, you know, put my empathetic shoes on.
AllHipHop:Please talk about the dynamic between your character Kanan and Patina’s character Raq in Power Book III season 3.
Mekai Curtis: It’s of course, obviously, clearly dysfunctional as far as a a parent child paradigm is concerned. You know, portraying the ins and outs of this relationship on camera with a veteran actress? Man, it’s the ultimate blessing. You know, I get to show up to work every day and she essentially, has already thought of every base to cover. She’s beyond intelligent and beyond. Willing to, you know, share her thought process and share how she’s viewing the scenes. She also helps me to better inform my choices a lot of times.
Just be working with somebody with such prestige, you know, somebody that shows up ready every day and expects you to show up ready every day and the synergy that kind of happens with being able to push each other, and to do better and do more and seeing that kind of play out through the characters it’s fun. It’s a blessing. Like it’s a challenge kind of thing we do with each other.
Each scene is I basically is a dance. How do you figure out how to complement each other? Where I’m gonna step where you’re gonna step. Being in that pocket, locked in with your scene partner, I mean, and getting to do that with her is the ultimate gift to any performer, truthfully.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 3 is now available to stream on STARZ.
Social media personality Charleston White was arrested in Texas on Monday (December 18). According to Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office records, White was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of cruelty to non-livestock animals.
White was in custody at the Lon Evans Corrections Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Each assault charge carried a $15,000 bond. The animal cruelty charge’s bond was $1,000.
The controversial figure landed in jail days after he begged for a date with Cardi B on social media. White pitched the idea of a virtual date with the Atlantic Records rapper after she broke up with her husband Offset.
“We can do a Metaverse date,” White said. “You go to a restaurant, I go to a restaurant in a quiet corner and we go live [on Instagram] and just talk to each other. That’s all I want. Man, I just want to talk to Cardi B. I just wanna have a three-hour conversation with Cardi B like I had with Cam Newton.”
He added, “I used to want 12 gold teeth for Christmas. I don’t want 12 gold teeth no more. I want a three-hour conversation with Cardi B.”
White’s arrest occurred a little over a week after he was attacked at one of his comedy shows. A viral video of the incident showed him clashing with audience members and getting tackled on stage.
“They was heckling me and so I accused them n##### of being a nephew and an uncle who f### each other,” White claimed. “Them n##### got mad at me. So, the uncle with the Kobe Bryant jersey stands up and walked toward the stage and said, ‘Let me get on stage.’ So, I feared for my life and hit him with the flower vase.”
Plies appears to have referenced burgeoning NBA star Anthony Edward’s abortion controversy involving Chief Keef’s ex-girlfriend.
In a tweet he shared on Twitter (X) and promptly reposted on Instagram, Plies seemingly criticized men who jeopardize their livelihoods for momentary pleasures of the flesh. More specifically, Plies addressed his trouble, understanding men who get rich then proceed to run around in the short but clearly calculated message.
“I Don’t Understand How U Can Work Hard All Your Life To Get To The Bag [money bag emoji]… Just To Run Around & F*ck Chicks ‘RAW’ Who Ain’t Got Sh*t!! Just To Give Them Your Hard Earned Money!!!! I Just Don’t Get It!!!!,” Plies wrote on X.
I Don’t Understand How U Can Work Hard All Your Life To Get To The Bag 💰… Just To Run Around & F*ck Chicks “RAW” Who Ain’t Got Sh*t!! Just To Give Them Your Hard Earned Money!!!! I Just Don’t Get It!!!!
Although Plies didn’t call out the Minnesota Timberwolves point guard by name, the rhetorical scenario he appears to be harping about is extremely similar to Edwards’ public falling out with Instagram model Paige Jordae. Earlier this week, Jordae (who was previously in a relationship and had a child with Chief Keef) accused Edwards of paying her $100,000 to get an abortion after their fling. According to Jordae, Edwards submitted the payment to her upon her confirming visual proof of the abortion.
Jordae shared text message exchanges as well as what appears to be proof of a six-figure wire transfer payment being sent to her. Edwards also addressed the situation in a statement on Twitter earlier this week.
“I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man,” he said. “All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them. I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time.”
A Louisiana judge slightly altered the terms of NBA YoungBoy’s house arrest in a ruling on Monday (December 18). According to court documents obtained by AllHipHop, Judge Shelly Dick eased restrictions on the 24-year-old rapper’s ability to seek help for his mental health.
Judge Dick rejected the Motown Records artist’s request for more freedom to travel to recording studios and film music videos. NBA YoungBoy, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, remains on house arrest in Utah awaiting a federal gun trial in his home state of Louisiana.
“The Court finds that Condition No. 13 shall be amended to allow Gaulden to attend medical appointments specifically approved in advance by Mr. Gaulden’s pretrial supervision officer,” Judge Dick wrote. “This will allow Gaulden to participate in mental health programs and social services programming offered through Pretrial Services. However, the Court further finds that Gaulden has failed to show good cause for amending Condition No. 13 to provide for an employment-related modification.”
YoungBoy’s lawyers filed a motion to modify the conditions of his pretrial release in November. Prosecutors objected, citing the vagueness of his request regarding “employment-related activities.” Judge Dick raised similar concerns in her ruling.
“The conditions imposed on Gaulden’s pretrial release are designed to reasonably assure the safety of both Gaulden and others,” the judge wrote. “Gaulden states he ‘does not want to burden this Honorable Court with each employment-related request,’ but given the vague bounds of the request, and in light of the history of violence aimed at Gaulden and those around him, the Court is more troubled by the threat that the proposed modification imposes on Gaulden’s safety. Gaulden can continue to seek Court-approval of such activities until the trial of this matter begins on the date recently chosen by the parties.”
YoungBoy’s federal case stems from his 2020 arrest in Louisiana. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm. His trial is scheduled to begin in July 2024.
Dr. Dre’s seminal solo debut, The Chronic, celebrated its 31st anniversary on Friday (December 15). The iconic West Coast gangsta rap album not only ushered in the G-Funk era but also helped launch the careers of Snoop Dogg, Lady of Rage, Daz Dillinger, Nate Dogg, Kurput and many more.
But not everybody is necessarily celebrating. Taking to Instagram, Daz Dillinger—who contributed to “B####es Ain’t S###,” “The Day The N##### Took Over,” “The Roach (Outro)” and “Deeez Nuuuts”—called out Dr. Dre and Interscope Records over an alleged lack of payment.
He wrote, “HAPPY 31st C DAY TO THE CHRONIC @drdre BUT WHEN CAN WE RECEIVE OUR ROYALITIES ARE YOU OR @interscope GONE ROBB US LIKE @deathrowrecords 2024 & THE N##### FROM THE PAST WHO RAN IT str8 Bitchez FUCEM REMEMBER DAZ COPYRIGHT REVERSIONS LAW IZ FILED I WANT % not points SO YALL ON A TIME LIMIT 4MORE YRS TIL IT REVERTS BAC THEN ITS REALLY LIKE FUCCEM I AINT CLEARING S### up IM COMIN.”
Former Death Row Records artist RBX contributed to six songs on The Chronic, including “High Powered,” “Stranded On Death Row” and “Lyrical Gangbang.” But contract disputes and issues with ex-Death Row CEO Suge Knight proved too much to tolerate, and he left in 1994. Speaking to AllHipHopin May, he suggested he’s moved past the royalties dispute.
I don’t cry over spilled milk though ’cause I believe in a higher power and everything that was done was done for a reason,” he said at the time. “That’s why we still here. And at the end of the day, they might have run out and did this and that, but they can’t take my name and they can’t take my voice. And I still got these pens and pads to write these rhymes and they didn’t write s### for me—I wrote for them.”
He continued, “It feels good ’cause we did work hard on it. It wasn’t like it was a cake walk. Even though Dre didn’t make us walk to Harlem to get him no cheesecake or some balloons, we were out there because we had that Death Row on our back. At that time we was pushing the line, it wasn’t a nice thing. It was real Death Row. It got a lot of respect from some people and got a lot of hate from others.
“You walked the fine line any day you went anywhere. Dre was my loved one. We have grown apart or whatnot, but me and Dre never had no problems. My problems always came from Suge. And then Suge would put pressure on them. Knowing that, I thought it would be best for me to fall back.”
In January, it was reported Dr. Dre was selling a number of his music assets and other sources of income in deals with Universal Music Group (UMG) and investment firm Shamrock Capital. The combined sale price of all the assets, which include the master recordings for The Chronic, was $200 million.
